Solve : disc partitions mixed up?

Answer»

Don't know how I accomplished this but was wondering if it can be resolved without going through another Windows Install. My GATEWAY Desktop Model E2500 running W.XP pro with Celeron Processor 2.8Ghz, 1 GB of RAM is booting from partition D and not C.  It's so mixed up. That is the partition that should have the backup OS on it.
It's running low on disk space and I can't even get SP3 installed. How do I boot and run from C instead of D?

thanks for any help you can give me.

LAMPost a screenshot of Disk Management...

How did this happen ? ?I had to reload Windows once so I must have picked a partition without noticing.

sorry, I can't figure out how to post an image. it's not on this pc
To describe the disk management: the D drive (3.52GB) is the boot drive and the C (73.16GB) is the system driveI'd suggest starting from scratch. Format everything and reinstall to c: drive. OK, thanks. Just thought I would check and see if there was an easier, shorter way. Haven't had much EXPERIENCE in this area. Thank so much for your time.

LAMUnfortunately there's no way to change the designation of the system drive without reinstalling the OS. Make sure there are no external drives / devices connected when you do the installation.gotcha, thanks!

Solve : security window?

Answer»

While trying to "log off" secure bank account page, a windows window opens telling me that even though I am on an encrypted page, I could be sending info out from last TRANSACTION to an unencrypted destination that could be read by a third party. Do you wish to continue sending? (continue or CANCEL). I have not encountered this before. It acts like I am trying to exit the bank's website before logging off. I tried a DISK sweep and then a system restore back 1 week. No help. My security software is Kaspersky 2011. Is there something I should look for to keep this window from showing itself??

Solve : Using QuickTime on Windows XP?

Answer»

I have never had a problem like this before. I have spent hours trying to fix myself. In the past, on my other PC's with Windows XP, I downloaded QuickTime and had no problems viewing videos. I am now using a re-built HP PC which seems good except after downloading QuickTime, all I get is a green screen when using Firefox and no VIDEO. The INDICATOR bar showing the film is PROCEEDING moves from left to right. I know that QT was loaded properly, as the "Q" icon now appears. I re-booted and tried using Internet Explorer, but all I get when I click on the videos is a blue "Q" with a question mark on the center of the icon. What's the problem. I checked and my PC has plenty of RAM to accomodate QT. THANKS. Quote

Solve : hughes.net wireless router?

Answer»

hello, out there and thank you in advance for your help.  i tried to set up a d-link dir655 wireless router to my hn7000s modem on my satellite and had no luck after three days and quit.. brought it home to my apt. and hooked it up in minutes with my cable.
  question is: what is the simplest way to go.  i have an older DELL running xp  pro.  i do not have sp 3 installed HOWEVER.   i don't know if that is an issue.. now remember that i NEED to be led by the hand in order to follow instructions..   TRY this-> http://blogs.oracle.com/simonthorpe/2009/06/configuring_a_dlink_dir_655_as.htmlthank you again for your reply.  however, i have my d-link dir 655 already hooked up in my apartment and i'm looking for another wireless router that will not give me so much trouble.. by the way, my satellite is at another location where it is a stand alone system.  if someone can suggest a wireless router and how to configure it to the hughes. net hn7000s, i would greatly appreciate it.   Check the Hughes site to dee if they have an Approved Vender list for wireless modems...not going to work that way, but, i did find out one thing.  after a little research i FOUND out that i needed to have sp3 installed in my computer for installation of a wireless router which i do not because it would not take.. so i am learning how to deal with that first and then i will buy a new wireless router.

i guess my next question would be what type router works best with the hn7000s modem.  considering how slow hughes is, 1.0 Mbps/200 Kbps is maximum download/upload speed.. so i'm guessing an appropriate sized router is what i should be looking for.. any suggestions? thanx, bob

Solve : OK I am SCREWED! XP will not boot and PC is now DEAD I messed up a sys32 file!?

Answer»

OK I F'd up big time, and now the PC is dead!    Here is what is going on... My housemates Dad's Desktop had some issues and I took it on myself to try and fix it.  It is an older tower PC (circa 2003-05?)  Anyways, the OS is Windows XP Pro with all the service packs (SP3?).

My first challenge was that this error message "GetfDriveLayOut: CreateFile fail ! The system cannot find the file specified" would keep showing up.  Then this same PC has become incredibly slow.

I figured out that the Error Message was coming from the Via Raid program.  OK, Yes the mother board has Via Raid on it. I did these steps to remove VIA RAID by un-checking the RaidTool entry from the XP Pro Start-up Directory.  Here is how I did that:

Click Start > Run > Type msconfig

Select the Startup tab.

Uncheck the RaidTool entry.

(O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RaidTool] C:\Program Files\VIA\RAID\raid_tool.exe)

Reboot the computer.

NOW on TOP of this problem... The PC was/is infected with the D*% "RE-DIRECT VIRUS" .  Every time anyone tries to use either Google, Yahoo or FoxFire (or other browsers), EVERYTHING gets re-directed to random unwanted & unknown websites.

I am using Avira AntiVirus Personal Edition (have faith in Avira).  But it did not find or remove the "Re-direct" Virus!

OK here is WHERE I messed up....  I was searching the web trying to find a solution to the "Re-direct Virus"  I found a site where a GUY said that he determined that the Atapi.sys file was at fault.  This guy said he copied Atapi.sys from another PC he has and wrote over the Atapi.sys on the infected PC.  He said that it "fixed the issue".... So guess what I did?  Yep i tried the same thing, but in doing so I did something wrong and now the file is corrupted!  Yeah I SCREWED UP!

Now the PC won't perform a full boot.  What it does is "loop"  meaning it gets to a point then re-boots automatically.  And does not allow XP to open.  OK, I could go into set-up using the "del" key but the F or F8 or F9 key attempts did not open "help" or other fix choices?

Then the computer seemed to lock up.  Hitting the off button did not turn the PC off, so to shut it down, I used the toggle switch on the Power supply.  When i tried to turn the PC back on, NOTHING!  I THINK I killed the Power Supply.

My THOUGHTS are this... I need to try a different PS.  Then if that is the fix, then I will need some advice on how to fix the corrupt Atapi.sys file problem.  (Will I need a recovery disc or will I use the XP disc?).

Then... When i get the PC back up and runnibg XP again, I will need some help from the malware experts to rid this PC of that D*% "RE-DIRECT VIRUS"!!!

Solve : Single Account Freezing?

Answer»

First off, I apologize for the lack of information I can provide, this is concerning the OS installed on a military classified system, but OS issue none-the-less (I think...)

We're running Windows XP Professional SP2, and the system has been running for nearly two years with maybe an hour downtime a month. Out of our 23 CONSOLES, one has demonstrated indications of issues. Namely, the OS FREEZES. I'm no expert, but when the taskbar freezes with a "loading" mouse icon that should indicate that explorer.exe is frozen. I close explorer.exe and run my program manually (via the task manager run command) and the software works without issue, but if I bring explorer.exe back in it all dies.

Here's the catch, it only happens on our operations account. When I LOG into maintenance or administrator and have it run the exact same software suite there is not an issue. Obviously, if we can work around it we do, but leaving an operator with access to our maintenance account is hardly solving any issues, ultimately it'll create more (operators like to "play" around).

Now, I apologize as I can not load any programs on the system for diagnostics, I can't provide much more specific information outside of the standard OS-level information, and we do not have software discs to reinstall/repair the OS and my system software.

I know it isn't much to work with, but any assistance would be greatly appreciated. The issue started out of nowhere, and it's a closed system, no access to any sort of network that I do not have complete control over, so the likelihood of a virus is BEYOND minimal.

Thank you in advance!Well i could suggest a few things...but their Classified...

The User account is corrupt.

Solve : Automatic immediate log off HELP?

Answer»

Was going and deleting all viruses and stupidily DELETED a registry key and now when I log on my computer AUTOMATICALLY logs me back off, how can I fix this?  PLEASE HELP I`m an idiot.What operating system and service pack level?Nevermind 30 MINUTES after I posted Pizzaboy had the same problem so I'll try the suggestions from that thread.Ok I still need help cause I don't have my XP disc. I obviously have XP and how do you go to safe mode, I've tried the F8 method but I can't get it to work.Do you have Recovery CD?Nope, my only hope is probably to get into safe mode and see if I can fix something from there.What Registry key ? ?
Did you have a Registry backup program ?
The 6 floppy set DLoad from Microsoft will let you run the Recovery Console but WITHOUT a backup of the Registry it may not be sufficient enough to do the repairs you need.
I would try and find or borrow an XP CD.
It needs to match your version including all Service pPacks currently installed...

For safe mode tap F8 repeatedly upon startup before you see the Windows splash screen.I don't remember what key exactly but something about Windows NT was probably in the name if I recall correctly.  I've read sometimes if you have a USB hook up keyboard then you might not be ABLE to get into safe mode using F8. Quote from: hotwheeler89 on April 13, 2008, 08:10:49 PM

I've read sometimes if you have a USB hook up keyboard then you might not be able to get into safe mode using F8.

Use CMOS setup to enable "USB Legacy Mode" in the BIOS.  Or look for other USB options in the BIOS such as "USB Keyboard".  See Universal Serial Bus Devices Do Not Work in Safe Mode.Thanks for the help I was able to get into safe mode unfortunately it still automatically logged me back off, I guess I'm just screwed.If you know, can you share with us what "enabled" you to get into Safe Mode?I changed some stuff in the BIOS but I got an XP disc and when I go to recovery I need an administrator password and it doesn't seem to be the password I use. So I just pressed enter when it was blank and on the next line it said, C:/WINDOWS>.  What am I supposed to do? EDIT: When I type HELP it gives a list of things I can do but which one will help me fix/restore the registry key I deleted?    my PC log off automaticly i need help for it

Solve : reloading XP from scratch?

Answer»

My laptop is getting SLOWER and slower so I want to wipe it clean and RELOAD it from scratch. It is an Acer Ferrari 3200 currently at XP PRO service pack 3.
I have also heard that service pack 2 and 3 are no longer available from Microsoft.
Should I ATTEMPT a reload from scratch? and if so, where can I get SP2 and SP3 from if I decide to go ahead.Do you have an original XP CD? If so, you can download sp3 from Microsoft's website and CREATE a slipstream sp3 XP CD to do the installation (http://lifehacker.com/#!386526/slipstream-service-pack-3-into-your-windows-xp-installation-cd). If you do not have an original XP CD, you'll have to purchase one.Thanks for the info - I assume that I do not have to reload SP2 then

Solve : Computer freezes after driver load during start up?

Answer»

Help!!
Wait that is why I am here.
About 2 months ago my computer started to freeze up.  Very random when it would do this and did not seem to matter which program I was working in.  The freeze ups went from every few days to multiple times per day.  I tried doing a system restore to a previous date, but it would freeze up or go though the process and then tell me that it could not restore to the date selected.  I tried multiple DATES.  Then finally it just started freezing up after the bios and driver load.  I could not get to the welcome screen, or start in safe mode.  There had been no new programs loaded to cause this.  I have multiple spyware programs, and scanned with all of them, so did not figure it to be a virus.  I tried to reload windows XP but it would freeze during install.  I changed out the battery on the mobo.  Finally I installed a new hard drive, replaced the mother board, and dropped down from 4 sticks of ram to 1 stick of ram to start testing.  It started RIGHT up and notified me I was missing 1 stick of ram.  I added the 2nd stick.  FOUND 1 of the 4 to be bad.  Loaded windows XP and all the wonderful updates.  Got everything back up and running just fine.  That was about 1 MONTH ago.
Worked GREAT for about 2 weeks
2 weeks ago it starts freezing up again.  Windows explorer does not show my slave drive (this is a new symptom), the system restore does not work etc…   Sometimes it freezes on the driver load, sometimes I get to the welcome screen.  It seems to get further if I leave it sit off overnight then try to work on it the next afternoon.  I am out of ideas, but cannot bring myself to buy a new computer yet.  The processor is the only thing that I have not changed out yet.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you

Windows XP pro SP2 upgraded to SP3
2 gig ram
2.8 Intel processor
Intel mobo
Sounds like a failing HDD to me...
DLoad and run the diagnostics from the manuf. site...
Run the long test.Thank you for the suggestion.
That was why I replaced the hard drive the 1st time.  It does the same thing now with the new hard drive.
I am not sure how I am suppose to down load the diagnostics tool when I can not get the computer to get past the XP screen or the welcome screen, or get it to start in safe mode.  DLoad it on a working machine...
Follow the info at the site for creating a bootable CD.
None of them require Windows to be working as they run the test outside of the operating system...

Solve : Printer Spooler Service?

Answer»

Hi

PLEASE HELP!!!

The printer spooler service has been deleted off my laptop (not sure how). I ran Services.msc and it is not there. I then ran a scan(as per another site) but nothing has helped.

Could you tell me what i NEED to do next?

Many thanks

Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your Windows CD handy as it will ASK for it...
When it finishes remove the CD and re-boot...Hi

I did the sfc /scannow and nothing happened. It never asked me for the disk or anything.

Did you re-boot afterwards ? ?Try here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itprovistaprinting/thread/dc67cf1a-4308-4604-a8da-8cd7a7b8fe1dRun msconfig and on Services tab, scroll and look for Print Spooler. What is the status and is it present?There are several ways to resolve printer spooler error, probably because there are many variations of this error. The error caused by faulty software can be resolved by DELETING all the information found in the directory. Thereafter, navigate to the Control Panel, CLICK on Administrative Tools and then services icon. Find the service labeled Print Spooler, highlight it and restart the process. If that doesn’t work, the program might be corrupted. Click on start, then Run. Search for the document labeled services.msc, and this will trigger the opening of another window. On this window, scroll down and click “Print Spooler”. Check its setting and turn on automatic mode. Click Okay, and restart the machine. If you’re lucky, this might be all you have to do. Still doesn’t work? Navigate to the Add/Remove Programs screen of the Control Panel. Find the all the software responsible for making the printer run including the drivers, and uninstall them. Be sure to be thorough about it, or the problem may not be solved. Download the latest copy of your printer’s software from the manufacturer and reinstall it.

Solve : help with lan adapter problem from earlier post?

Answer»

hey there fella's. good news and bad news from my post earlier. good news is i found the network adapter in device manager it was hidden. bad news is i found the driver for the lan adapter on the board it installed it or so it said but i still don't have any network connections. i feel as if i had the cd that came with the mobo is the only way to solve this. i dont know it just wont recognize any internet connection. please feel free to help me on this and the post from earlier
You can get drivers for almost any motherboard if  you can get the right ID of the motherboard. You may have to download a utility to help you find the EXACT model number of the board. Once you have that, you NCAN locate the right driver set.
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
Meanwhile, network cards are now at very LOW prices. Either a PCI card or a USB adapter. The may be the easy way to solve your PROBLEM. In the USA, network cards or adapters sell for under $20, about what your family pays to have a fast-food lunch noways.  So tell the family to make their own sandwiches for a day and save the money to fix that computer.What is the status of your network adapter on device manager(flags/marks)? Did you install mobo/chipset driver first?
Quote

i dont know it just wont recognize any internet connection
Did it work before? Have you tried checking for any ticked proxy settings,VPN, configured IP address,dialup or passwords? It should all be in Automatically obtain IP, DNS. Another cause would also be another firewall installed could be blocking your internet connection. If there is one, try using windows firewall instead.

Solve : Laptop Freezes when Windows Loads?

Answer»

Okay... I got a laptop (off brand.. called "Balance") in December of 04'. It has worked well up until recently when it began freezing randomly for no OBVIOUS reason. Then, just really recently, it froze, and would not come unfrozen, so i pushed the button, and restarted it. It came up to the screen where it has "Windows XP LOADING" with the little bar that moves. Anyways, so it froze there. I couldn't think of what else to do, so I put in the system recovery cd's, and they recovered up to the point where you setup windows. It got to the "windows loading" screen, and froze again. I shut it down again, and tried various THINGS, like starting it in SAFEMODE, but it just says that it is not installed and to repeat the recovery. I repeated the recovery 2 more times, with the same result, the freezing. I am not sure if it is windows, or the computer, and I have no clue what to do. I don;t KNOW if I should just throw the thing away (or somehow find some place to pawn it) or what. Any help or comment would be appreciated. Email me if you MUST have more information about the computer.It sounds like it's having trouble getting power. Did you have it on and plugged in to an outlet during a storm recently?

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]I had a similar issue and just ended up replacing the hard drive, luckily it was under warranty and Dell replaced it for free.

I have an older computer the OS was XP Pro if that matters.  the last THING i did to it was take out the flopppy drive.  It was working fine but then all of a sudden it stopped booting up.  I also had the computer on for a while than i usually do, i had a fan problem in the past and replaced that i dont think the fan is bad again, but when i go to boot it up it seems like it starts booting up but then there is no signal to the monitor and i checked numerous times that everything is plugged in correctly and it is, is there something wrong with my motherboard?was it the heatsink fan.that was ..playing up?? or the psu...one...have you taken out ...or .disturbed the cpu  chip. for eg:...tell us what is happening when the pc boots.....like beeping etc.......Is all other hardware properly connected?

You should reset the CMOS if all hardware is properly connected.Older computer? When did you last check the CMOS BATTERY on the mainboard?I recently put in a new battery thinking thats what it could be but that did not help at all.  When it is booting up it does the initial beep but it then sometimes the lights stay on and then sometimes only one of them does, which usually means that it is going to boot up correctly, but either way there is still no signal to the monitor.  I nhave checked to see if all the hardware is plugged in correctly but i will check some more to make sure.  Is this on board video or is there a separate video card? Does the video MEMORY share the main RAM memory?

Have you run a diagnostic check on the RAM modules?

Solve : Managing Internet Speed Between Applications?

Answer»

Hi
I am using Windows XP PRO SP3. I want to manage INTERNET bandwidth between my Applications. Sometimes many apps requiring to be connected to Internet are running at same time such as Internet browsers, download manager (IDM &bittorrent) , anti viruses , online games , ETC. when some applications are running they get most speed of internet and browsers hardly open web pages and or anti viruses get updates slowly, etc. ,
how i can manage internet bandwidth between apps.when antiviruses are downloading updates how they can get most speed of internet  for it.
these specific app that i told are just EXAMPLES. i want to KNOW how to manage speed of internet between apps in GENERAL.
That is often done automatically. A few programs have built-in management. If you are doing P2P in the background, that application should have a throttle.

Example: Vuze ( http://vuse.com )  is a torrent app with bandwidth management.

Otherwise, you buy a specific router that can do that and/or  buy the third party software that does it. Look  at Crisco systems.
http://tools.cisco.comTry this--> http://seriousbit.com/netbalancer/
You could also go by a higher internet bandwith if you are having trouble keeping up with all the activities...

Solve : what version of xp do i need to get??

Answer»

i have a toshiba satellite a105-s4274 and i think the factory image is deleted which means the recovery software won't reformat it, i get error " ntldr is missing hit ctrl alt del" toshiba said it's a hard drive problem but i asked around and was told i need to buy an xp cd and am wondering if i could find 1 online to burn or if i have to buy 1 which specific 1 should i buy?

toshiba website said it came with:  XP Media Center Edition 2005You will need to order the Recovery CD direct from Toshiba...
Media Center CD's are pretty rare...even if you can find 1

However you could in fact install any Edition of XP on it that you want...all your data and apps will be gone as a result.i have the recovery cds but they do not work because i think the factory image is deleted, if the factory image is gone i'd need media center or any xp installation would work? i have the recovery cds but they do not work because i think the factory image is deleted, if the factory image is gone i'd need media center or any xp installation would work?

Official Toshiba recovery media contain a Ghost image and do not depend on the presence of the recovery partition.

I think this has been asked by the OP on another site since Feb. 2, 2011 and CLEARLY been suggested.
http://computerhelpforum.org/forum/hardware/f8/new_hard_drive_installation_problem/t30636.htmli actually asked the question on 5 different forums and between that and toshiba i got 4-5 different answers which i have to weed thru and figure out who the 1 guy is that knows what he's talking about and take his advice instead of the others  and waste my $

so i need to buy recovery cds from toshiba? not the ones that came with the laptop? because toshiba told me i need to junk the hard drive but the more people i ask they tell me that probably isn't the case

on the other site i had bought another hard drive but i was told on another site that i didn't need it and that is why i am posting here asking how to fix the toshiba hd, if the hd is junked no biggie i'll just get a diff laptop because it ain't worth the cost to fix it Quote from: cagedl on March 17, 2011, 10:06:19 PM
so i need to buy recovery cds from toshiba? not the ones that came with the laptop?

All new Toshiba laptops ship from the factory with the ability to run the system recovery process from a hard disk partition, and with preinstalled software that can be used to record recovery media to blank discs.  Toshiba recommends creating recovery media to ensure the ability to run a system recovery even if the hard disk recovery partition is damaged or deleted, or if the hard disk breaks.  Reconditioned laptops may not include this recovery enabling software so may require that recovery media be purchased.

Recovery media can be ordered online.  There is no CHARGE for the software itself, for which customers already own licenses, and as of 10/1/10 the shipping and handling charges for delivery of recovery media in the US is $24.95 for DVD media or $34.95 for USB sticks.

Quoted from Cagedl:  "I get error " ntldr is missing hit ctrl alt del" toshiba said it's a hard drive problem but i asked around and was told i need to buy an xp cd...."

Well, from my limited knowledge... the error message "ntldr is missing"  refers to the inability of the Operating System to recognize your hard drive.  My question, is, did you install a different hard drive?  If you did, you would have had to go into "set-up" (from the boot up screen by hitting delete or whatever key it needs)  then giving the hard drive parameter information to the DOS OS.

Perhaps someone else can add more to this for you.  I am not sure XP has the capability to find and write the hard drive information into the bios??

My 2 cents worth.  Rich Quote from: richardpreston on March 19, 2011, 04:29:21 PM

I buy a new hd and put it in and am GETTING this error with the recovery cd in.
This would tell me the recovery software was created for a specific size drive and or the recover CD are corrupt.

Is the BIOS reading the REPLACEMENT HDD correctly may need to be configured?  May need to change the boot order to CD first.  Since it states with the recovery cd in.

Were you getting the error message after you formatted the original HDD or is this since the new HDD was put in?Hello CAGEDL,

I have a GATEWAY with WinXP Home Media Edition that I recently recovered.

I ordered a RESTORE DISK from restoredisks.com for a price of $26.99 postage paid.

It worked great. Restored the laptop to as-new 2005 factory shipped condition.

I started the laptop and caught the F12 BIOS on the startup page; changed the first source to CD/DVD; opened the drive bay and shutdown the computer; put the CD in the drive and powered up.
It caught the CD and reformatted the HD and loaded the software.

I have since installed Linux Mint and have dual boot.

A search on RestoreDisks lists two Satellite models with WinXP Home Media Edition:

Solve : Compaq Presario R3000 AMD Laptop?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario R3000 AMD Laptop that used to be my main computer. It started giving me the blue screen every now and then. I forgot what had started happening to it, but I decided to reformat the thing and do a clean install of Windows XP SP2. After the reformat and clean install, windows booted up, but windows did not recognize the cd drive. Also, this PARTICULAR laptop had a dvd driver disc, so I had no drivers for my computer, which means I couldnt access the INTERNET wirelessly. I reformatted once again and did another clean install and Windows recognized the drive. I ran the dvd driver recovery disc, and as soon as it starts to install the laptop blue screens, reboots, and when you turn it back on the computer screen just stays black and will not do anything. This is very frustrating as I loved my laptop. It would be nice to use again.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Thanks.DVD drive doesn't need drivers in XP.
Is the drive reported in Device Manager, without any errors?I know that, It just didnt show up at all, but like i said after another clean install it showed up. But that's not my issue, my issue is that when I run the dvd recovery driver, it has all the drivers I need from audio, video, wireless card, etc. When the dvd starts to install the drivers the computer blue screens and reboots, and then when you turn it on the screen is black and stays black, will not boot. Quote

when I run the dvd recovery driver
What would that be?The laptop came with a separate dvd that contains the drivers. The actual windows disc DOESNT install the basic drivers that I need. It just INSTALLS windows. I have to use the dvd to install the drivers that belong to the laptop itself. That includes everything from USB to video, audio, internet, basically everything for the computer to function properly.Did you try to clean CD?
Did you notice at what point of installation you're getting blue screen.
What does BSOD say?can't read BSOD it goes blue for like 1 second then immediately reboots, no time to read. as soon as it starts to install the first driver, which would be the audio driver. it blue screens.Maybe you need to check your hard drive with free diagnostic tool from your HD manufacturer web site.Well in order for me to do anything with it, I have to reformat the ENTIRE thing and reinstall windows again. I have to do that everytime I try install drivers. It is very frustrating and takes hours just to fail again...I'd check HD, first, because, if there is something wrong with it, reformat won't help.I can't check the HD because the computer will not even boot up until I reformat it and reinstall windows.That diagnostic CD is bootable.I cannot find the diagnostic tool Quote from: Ryoshin on April 28, 2008, 02:52:25 PM
I cannot find the diagnostic tool
1) Find out what hard drive you have in that machine...
2) Travel to that drive manuf. website and DLoad the FREE diagnostics...
3) Use the DLoaded file to create a bootable CD/DVDYeah well, I finally got access to bios and it has an HDD self-test, tested it and it passed fine. So, it's not the HDD.

Solve : skype keeps rebooting my laptop?

Answer»

Hi, I have been looking for some help on the net but nothing seems to help my problem. I use Windows XP. I have been USING Skype for some time now without problems, just lately whenever I open skype a blue screen comes on saying that windows has detected a problem and needs to shut down to prevent some damage. Then it cuts me off the internet and after I close the skype the situation persists.
I tried to follow certain advice - scan computer in safe mode, do registry cleaning and malware scan, avg scan - nothing indicates a virus.
I tried to uninstall and install back skype but that did not help either. In the control panel, add and remove programmes when I wanted to uninstall Skype web features it just did not allow me.
Does anybody have a cure?
ThanksPost the entire BSOD  message including the gibberish...Excuse my limited knowledge but what is BSOD?Oh yes, I found out that BSOD is blue screen of death. What size is the hard drive and how old is it?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not sure of the age, but it is a Western Digital tiny 6.5gb........I am just playing around with it seeing what I can do.......Sounds pretty old to me. A 'Serious disk error' probably indicates that it needs replacing. Try a Maxtor 20Gb or equivalent Western Digital, with an 8Mb buffer (also referrred to as an 8Mb drive-cache) which runs at 7,200 rev/min and you should have a much better machine.
20Gb is about as small as they make these days.
If you are not sure that the CD is really clean I just wash them in luke-warm water with a COUPLE of DROPS of mild soap solution using a soft sponge and then dry them with a clean linen cloth.
That usually prevents there being any read errors.
On an older computer it is worthwhile re-seating the RAM and making sure that the cabinet is clean and dust-free before undertaking a major re-install.
Just take proper anti-static precautions before you touch anything.
RAM Reseating & Fitting PDF FileYou can also download Western DIGITALS drive diagnostic diskette from their site and run the diagnostic and burn in tests on the drive. The drive might benefit from a low level format.
Soetimes with older drives you get 'underspinning'. That is to say that the drive is running slower than it should do. In that event, replacing it is the best option.
I wouldn't TOUCH EasyCleaner personally. Don't be tempted to remove 'duplicate' files as many are required by the system.
Spyware Doctor is useful and if you know your way around the registry you can use it in UNREGISTERED mode.
The BELL at the back of my head is ringing to tell me that what you have is a bit of adware.
I use EasyCleaner but also keep CLEAR of the Duplicate Files, everything else seems to perform aokAdAware SE, SpyBot SD & SpywareBlaster are also in use by most people, and using a good firewall. I just use the XP SP2 firewall.
Having sufficient RAM also helps.I took my duplicates one by one and manually deleted them after establishing what they were.
Now I get a clean bill of health  What operating system........
easy cleaner update......
Solve : UPGRADE TO WINXP?
Answer»
Hi
I wish to upgrade from win98 to winxp. (not full install) How much space do u think I should do a partition?
I have a 20GB harddisk available.
What would be the normal procedure before I begin?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!read more here >>>>.http://www.winxpfix.com/page8.htmIf you upgrade, you can not repartition the Hard Disk Drive as this would cause the data on the Hard Disk Drive to become unaccesable.Do you have an MS Windows '98 CD? Does the XP upgrade CD already have SP2? Is it the Home or Pro version of XP? What are the main programs which you intend using? What are the computers other specifications, and, have you already done an XP compatibility test?
It is best to do a clean install and use the XP CD to do all of the partitioning and formatting, using the '98 CD as proof of having the qualifying OS for the upgrade.
Here's Bill Gate's official answer to your question:
1. Check the System requirements to make sure your computer has what it takes under the HOOD to drive XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/sysreqs.mspx
(I'd suggest doubling many of these, especially the hard drive free space!)
2. Check the Hardware Compatibility List to make sure all your computer hardware devices will work with XP:
3. Install Windows XP:
DocThanks for all those info!
Unfortunately, I dont have the win98 CD and my OS was pre-installed previously. I guess my only option now is to download the upgrade version from site!
My pc is having problem with the cdrw which i just bought. It cannot detect my AOpen CDRW after installation. THEREFORE No way I can use Cdrw drive at this point. I dont know what caused the issue but some said probably it is the win98 OS and I need to upgrade and try to SEE whether winxp can detect my CDRW or not after that. What would be your advice in this case before I begin?
Another thing is the Master harddisk is FAILING and I will need to back up everything including the OS to the slave disk. How can it be done?check the jumper settings on the drive........for example a dvdrom drive master///cdrw drive slave on the same ide cable.....hello again
we have decided to download the winxp upgrade version from site. Is it possible to do a dual boot thereafter?? Is it necessary to back up all our emails, documents etc. before proceeding?
Solve : Problem installing adsl usb modem driver?
Answer»
hello,
Im hoping someone can give me a few clues as what to do or who to contact as I'm not sure where the problem lies with this!
I bought a new acer aspire 3002wlmi laptop yesterday, the OS is XP home (service pack 2).  I have been using broadband on my PC with a D-Link DSL-200 USB modem and theres been absolutely no problems there, but when I tried to install the modem driver on my laptop it gets about 3/4 of the way through before it gives me this error message:
"There is a problem installing the drivers for your modem
The operating system could not install the driver properly"
Im totally stuck!  I don't have extensive knowledge of computers, If something goes wrong I USUALLY do a google on it, but this TIME I found no information at all.
I looked at the Acer home pages tech support stuff, and the D-Link support questions, I even downloaded new drivers from D-Link and tried those but no.
This is driving me mad, Im hoping someone out there has a few clues.
Thanks in advance   load the software  from your isp on your laptop it contains the drivers for your usb modem??what usb..modem is it//speedtouch/alcatelSee if you can OBTAIN the most recent drivers from the website of the USB modem manufacturer.
OK the modem is a D-Link DSL-200 USB one, and yes I did say that I dwnloaded the new drivers   but they STILL didnt workHave a look here at this USB Device Stops WORKING or Won't Resume  >>http://www.usbman.com/winxpusbguide.htm
Solve : windows setup cannot run in safemode (can not turn off safemode?
Answer»
Tried REPAIR win xp with cd, I was in safemode. I tried to turn safemode off. PC stuck in safemode, Now get message windows cannot setup in safemode. Windows is restarting. How do I STOP setup? How do I disable safemode so I can finish windows repair or how do I wipe out the hard disk and start over? Please I did all I know to do.
Thanks JeanProvided that your windows system is installed at C:\Windows\ if you can still BOOT into Safe Mode do so, rename C:\Boot.ini to Boot.bak then reboot.  NTLDR should automatically boot from C:\Windows\ which is its default, after displaying the advisory message Invalid Boot.ini file Booting from C:\Windows\
If this is successful you may have to edit the Boot.bak file and save it as Boot.ini
Please POST back with your results or if you NEED further assist.
