Solve : one hard full, another empty can I transfer data?? |
Answer» Hello. I am using an XP system. My PROBLEM is that drive C (originally 1.94GB) is now down to 44.2 MB. I keep getting these messages to clean up. I have cleaned up al the internet pages, temporary files, and other things that are suggested. When I go to the "program" section, to uninstall unused program there is nothing there extra. It recently got clogged up like this (before there was close to 200MB free, after I opted for automatic downloads. I looked at my files for C but I didn't see anything extra either. Just my printer is there along withmy system files and program files, the stuff you get when you download XP. |

Solve : Windows Media Player works only once, then fails !? |
Answer» My ASUS 3GHz PC runs WinXP Pro/SP3 but its My Computer will only SHOW one optical disc drive at a time. That MAY be relevant to the PROBLEM I want to ask about. I have a DVD disc that I have used for YEARS to TEST whether a DVD player works - as it always quickly displays video in 'working' DVD players. In both DVD players of THIS PC, autorun presents an OPTION to play the disc in various players. If I choose Windows Media Player (series 9 is installed), I am told that "Windows Media Player is currently unable to play DVD video." and "A compatible DVD decoder is not installed." Since the graphics card is for NVidea GForce 6200, I chose from the suggested option : NVidia DVD Decoder. That works (well) ONCE only. Connection to internet or otherwise makes no difference. I have tried this several times starting with identical clones. Why only ONE success, and after that, failure ? Real Player 11 and VLC do no better. Please clarify. |

Solve : Don't have Windows password - need help? |

Answer» My sister just gave me her OLD HP desktop, but she cannot remember her Windows password. I have tried everything to get to the dos prompt to reload Windows XP from disc, but can't seem to get to the prompt. I have started in Safe mode - but there is no BIOS option. I chose safe mode with command prompt and had to CHOOSE Microsoft windows XP as op system. It runs many text LINES then takes me to the same WELCOME to windows page that I can't get PAST due to no password. |

Solve : Why is all the memory not being used . .? |
Answer» RUNNING: IE8, X P Pro, Intel Pent 4, 2500 Mb of PC3200, CPU 2.8. It runs 3 Monitors. At times I have "tested" my machine to see how many sites I could put up and hold in Taskbar. Until recently I only had 1500Mb of memory and at about 825 of usage it would almost come to a stop (PAGES not filling, videos not playing) . . so I added 1000Mb more memory . . . now the same thing happens when I get to about 1400 in usage . . .in each case a little more than half of what memory I had was being USED before the COMPUTER said 'thats enuff'. Why isn't ALL the memory being used. No, I don't really need it, just curious as to how this works. Otherwise, the machine works just fine, and fast. It has a Dual Core processor and Hyper-Threading. 64 Views and not one response. Dissappointing. Maybe I've been Blacklisted. Quote from: Buzzy007 on March 24, 2011, 03:06:43 PM 64 Views and not one response. Dissappointing. Maybe I've been Blacklisted. No answer because you said: "...the machine works just fine, and fast..." The application being used determines how much physical RAM is being used. Some use more virtual memory and less physical memory.what are you referring to by "usage"? Commit charge in the statusbar of task manager, Physical Memory used on the performance tab, or memory used by IE when you open the tabs? Quote from: Computer_Commando on March 24, 2011, 04:35:21 PM Some use more virtual memory and less physical memory.Well, generally speaking, applications just ask for some memory to store data in and don't really care how it's managed (that is what the memory manager is for) Really the answer here depends on what "usage" value they mean. Thanks BC, I was hoping you'd clarify memory management, as it's beyond my expertise. This is indeed refreshing... It's the exact opposite of the hundred's of posts we get from users worrying about too much memory usage... CARRY on... |

Solve : Can't wake computer up? |
Answer» :-/ Ever since I have had this Dell Dmension 4500 with WIN XP it has served me very well and never given me any nasty surprises. When I would leave the pc and do something else, when I returned, the blank screen (or screen saver) would go away and the page I had on the monitor would appear again - just by moving the mouse. A couple of weeks ago I think someone gave my pc a sleeping pill. When I leave it to go do something, if I am GONE for a long period of time, it will not wake up again. I have to shut down and reboot the system. I have gone in to "properties" and played with the power settings (not really knowing what I am doing) and still can not get it back to where it was in the "good old days." As you may have guessed by now, I am not exactly a PC guru - but I am good at light switches - and besides, what do you expect of a guy that is pushing 74. I'm from an era of radio and TV was just a dream. JohnB in El PasoHave you TRIED turning of HIBERNATION and then re-booting so that the old hyberfile.sys file is deleted and then turning hibernation back on again? |

Solve : Cleaning my HDD? |
Answer» I have an older PC with all kinds of crap and a partition on the HDD. Can I copy the required windows files to reinstall after I format the HDD?What type of PC and is it still working? IF it's still working you could use many types of media storage to backup your files, program installer, drivers or personal info. by a CD/DVD(requires an optical drive), Flashdrive, PORTABLE EXTERNAL Drive, Hardrive with Enclosure on the condition that your PC is running and is virus free. Another type is also using a software to back-up files like Acronis(free or paid) or via network sharing folders(requires internet connection) on another PC. Quote from: isitme on March 22, 2011, 08:15:28 PM I have an older PC with all kinds of crap and a partition on the HDD. Can I copy the required windows files to reinstall after I format the HDD? When you state and a partition this may be the recovery partition. More and more manufactures are no longer sending disk to restore COMPUTERS it is now being stored on the HDD. To answer the copy the required files for windows. Would be less stressful to buy a copy of windows and go to the computers manufacture web site and download the drives. But then again there is always the possibility that the partition you are talking about may be the system recovery. You cannot copy an installed version of Windows and be able to re-install it...this is by design. You could however use a disk imaging app to transfer it to a new drive... Or as SUGGESTED above find out if the other partition is in fact a recovery partition.http://www.restoredisks.com/ About $26.00. Will restore to factory fresh of the date of manufacture. It is the most simple way (you get all the original programs, too.) John |

Solve : Nero cannot format DVD? |
Answer» Nero cannot format my DVD+RW disc, it just takes a long time and won't work. STRANGE thing is, afterwards the DVD-drive won't eject the disc, it will not RESPOND to either manual press of the eject button or to eject it using windows. I have to restart the laptop to get the disc out again. 1. Of course, if not then trying to burn a DVD would be rather futile, don't you think? I am SURE there is an amazing amount of people who still attempt to do so, even though they know. Tried it. Out of curiosity I bought a DVD-RW and it worked nicely. However, DVD+RW is suppose to be supported. It is a crappy DVD-drive though |

Solve : Slow Performance And Frequent Hard Drive Usage? |
Answer» It seems no matter what i am trying to do, computer always uses hard drive. I have Internet Explorer 8.0 open with 4-5 tabs and everytime i switch tabs it takes at least 30 seconds to switch and all this time hard drive is loading. Or for example i opened tab with YouTube video fully loaded and paused it. After a while i return to it to resume playing and then this loading starts. And this does not happen with Internet Explorer only. It seems computer does not use memory or maybe 1Gb is not enough? What is strange is that when application is loaded, it responds well for some time but later as time passes it starts to load slow and computer seems to use hard drive a lot. That is correct, i use Windows XP 32-bit. How did you find out?,,,Just an educated GUESS from the appearance of the Task Manager. It seems you can add 1GB RAM. I would recommend adding the RAM & see if performance improves. Crucial's price is $18.99Why Crucial only? |

Solve : Not given the option to burn pictures to a disc? |
Answer» I dabble in photography, and recently shot a wedding. I took the memory card out of my camera, put it in the usb drive and downloaded the IMAGES to my laptop. I wanted to select the better pictures to provide to the couple, so I created a separate folder to put them in. Then when trying to BURN the to a disc.....I was not even given the option to do so. Usually there is an option that says copy files to CD or burn to CD or something along those lines, however this time there was NO option at all. I put the memory card and usb drive in my home PC, and the same thing. So decided to try another PC......3 PC's later and still the same OUTCOME. No option to burn these images to a disc. |

Solve : Install not enough memory? |
Answer» Hello all, The setup could not be his time for the video card from somewhere else to give a memory, or that's *censored*? you cannot install 56MB of Memory in a computer. you can only buy sticks in sizes that are powers of two, simply because of the way the Memory works. Given that, you have 56MB, if you had three slots, and one had 32MB, one had a 16MB stick, and a third had an 8MB stick. That is however far less likely then 8MB being used for the integrated graphics card. None of this is relevant, unless you are trying to install Windows XP. If you already have windows XP installed and it is another program that refuses to install, then Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 30, 2011, 12:31:25 AM the program is telling you it cannot run or install with less then 64MB of free memoryCould it mean Virtual Memory? It has to be an ancient computer to only have 64MB of physical memory. Quote from: Tashnav on March 30, 2011, 03:48:26 AM Could it mean Virtual Memory? Probably not, no.Everyone is saying what you can't do. What you can do is increase the size of the pagefile. This system appears to be ancient, so it be BETTER to use something older than XP, but if you just want to make it work. . . Start -> Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Click Settings under Performance -> Advanced -> Change Now type in the size of pagefile you want. When done, click OK till all the windows are closed. Done! Guide: http://www.ehow.com/how_2226129_size-paging-file-windows-xp.html Quote Everyone is saying what you can't do.Yes. Because what they can't due happens to be within the scope of what they are trying to do. They can of COURSE add more physical RAM, which would, and most likely is the only real solution. On the other hand, the solution could be averted by not having a problem. a System that old has no real need for a temperature monitoring program. Particularly one that will probably take up a good portion of active memory. Quote from: Linux711 on March 30, 2011, 11:33:55 AM What you can do is increase the size of the pagefile. They could also dance around in there underwear. coincidentally, that would do just as much good as changing the size of the pagefile. If the pagefile is set to system managed- it will be system managed. Even if they DID change it from the defaults, and set- let's say for the sake of argument, no pagefile- they would be seeing out of memory messages. They wouldn't be getting prompts from the installer that the program will not install when you have less then XXX MB installed. having more virtual memory isn't going to fool the installer. It will still find the same amount of physical RAM and it will still find that it's less than 64MB. Quote they would be seeing out of memory messages. All I can say is that I have had programs that wouldn't install on an older machine and changing the size of the pagefile fixed the problem. |
