Solve : CONTROL PANEL IS EMPTY--NO LISTS, NO ICONS?

Answer»

I have had PROBLEMS since I downloaded Norton Anti-virus 2005.  For the last 5 days, my COMPUTER would not shut down, and I had to "end task" until I could get it to do so.

I decided to do a restore and went back to May 3rd, which was when I first installed Norton.  Now I can no longer see anything when I go to to Control Panel screen, and--even worse--when I bring up the Help and Support screen,  it stays blank (the LITTLE hourglass just sits there forever).

I did a PC MightyMax scan and repair, so now some of the problems have been solved (at one point, every time I clicked on one of my desktop icons, it would TELL me that "explorer has caused an error in NAVSHEXE.DLL and will now close."  I can finally right click on the icons, but still cannot see or access anything on control panel or help and support.  Other screens are working fine.

Help!i take it  was trialware......uninstall norton nav.....try anti-prersonal- edition from majorgeeks.com......

Solve : one hard full, another empty can I transfer data??

Answer»

Hello.  I am using an XP system.  My PROBLEM is that drive C (originally 1.94GB) is now down to 44.2 MB.  I keep getting these messages to clean up.  I have cleaned up al the internet pages, temporary files, and other things that are suggested.  When I go to the "program" section, to uninstall unused program there is nothing there extra.  It recently got clogged up like this (before there was close to 200MB free, after I opted for automatic downloads.  I looked at my files for C but I didn't see anything extra either.  Just my printer is there along withmy system files and program files, the stuff you get when you download XP.
I do have some room on my D--425MB.
Question: What can I do to create more room on my C? Can I get rid of those updates safely? Can I transfer any program files or things from C to D? Can anyone come online through remote assistance and take a look at what is clogging things up like this?
Please, don't suggest that I upgrade or buy anything. I'm working on a budget and can't afford anything right now.
Thanks. Dr. JRun Disk Cleanup and remove all but the LAST restore point. See if System Restore is turned off and if Recycle Bin size is set at a reasonable level on each drive.

Reduce the IE Temporary Internet Files cache and History cache to the minimum. Unhide all files and folders and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and remove their entries from Add-Remove programs. Then
remove the contents of the C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder, the C: WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, the C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder, the C:\Windows\pchealth\Datacoll folder, and the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder and turn off prefetching.

Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files.  Then run chkdsk and defrag.Using windows explorer and windows find do this:

Set SHOW hidden folders and system folders within the options menu in EXPLORER.

Go to c:\windows

1) look for all the BLUE folders starting with "$"
example $MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$
select all these and DELETE. Even delete the SP1 folder.

2) Empty the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP folder.
3) Empty the C:\Documents and Settings\user01\Local Settings\TEMP
4) Using the Windows FIND (F3) command enter the next search string:  *.tmp *.old *.bak *.gid *.dmp *.~* ~*.* *.*~

The above string will find additional garbage. Selectively delete files in the search result

5) Sometime if you have MULTIPLE user accounts, there are recycle bins from other users that are usually not emptied.

Go to C:\RECYCLE (hidden folder) and delete anything there holding the SHIFT DEL keys (permanent delete) Administrator only can do this...
Move the Windows swap file to another partition/Hard Disk Drive.  I tried some of the things you guys said.  Some of the other things, I, well, couldn't figure out how to do them.  Like I couldn't find the swap files (I asked search but they came up with nothing for swap files) to move them to D.  And I couldn't find any blue files that began with $ .  And I don't know what F3, Find it.  So, maybe I'm just too. . . .
Anway, if you can tell me more simply what to do, that would be great.  And, what about all that space on D, can't that help in any way?  I need to download PowerPoint for use in a CLASS I'm teaching soon.  Can I put that, at least on D when the rest of my Office is on E (which is also nearly filled). Solve : Windows Media Player works only once, then fails !?

Answer»

My ASUS 3GHz PC runs WinXP Pro/SP3 but its My Computer will only SHOW one optical disc drive at a time. That MAY be relevant to the PROBLEM I want to ask about. I have a DVD disc that I have used for YEARS to TEST whether a DVD player works - as it always quickly displays video in 'working' DVD players. In both DVD players of THIS PC, autorun presents an OPTION to play the disc in various players. If I choose Windows Media Player (series 9 is installed), I am told that "Windows Media Player is currently unable to play DVD video." and "A compatible DVD decoder is not installed."  Since the graphics card is for NVidea GForce 6200, I chose from the suggested option : NVidia DVD Decoder. That works (well) ONCE only. Connection to internet or otherwise makes no difference. I have tried this several times starting with identical clones. Why only ONE success, and after that, failure ? Real Player 11 and VLC do no better. Please clarify.
Does it behave better with only one DVD drive?
If so, that is the solution.

Solve : Don't have Windows password - need help?

Answer»

My sister just gave me her OLD HP desktop, but she cannot remember her Windows password.  I have tried everything to get to the dos prompt to reload Windows XP from disc, but can't seem to get to the prompt.  I have started in Safe mode - but there is no BIOS option.  I chose safe mode with command prompt and had to CHOOSE Microsoft windows XP as op system. It runs many text LINES then takes me to the same WELCOME to windows page that I can't get PAST due to no password.

When I restart the computer, I am given the option to hit F9 to change startup and I disabled all but dos start.  Nothing changes - I go straight to the windows signon.

Please help!!!!!!!Best thing to do when you get a used machine is a wipe and a fresh install of Windows...

Solve : Why is all the memory not being used . .?

Answer» RUNNING:  IE8,   X P Pro,  Intel Pent 4,  2500 Mb of PC3200,  CPU 2.8.  It runs 3 Monitors.    At times I have "tested" my machine to see how many sites I could put up and hold in Taskbar.  Until recently I only had 1500Mb of memory and at about 825 of usage it would almost come to a stop (PAGES not  filling, videos not playing) . .
so I added 1000Mb more memory . . . now the same thing happens when I get to about 1400 in usage . . .in each case a little more than half of what memory I had was being USED  before the COMPUTER said 'thats enuff'.  Why isn't ALL the memory being used.    No,  I don't really need it, just curious as to how this works.  Otherwise, the machine works just fine,  and fast.  It has a Dual Core processor and Hyper-Threading. 64 Views and not one response.   Dissappointing.   Maybe I've been Blacklisted. 64 Views and not one response.   Dissappointing.   Maybe I've been Blacklisted.
No answer because you said:  "...the machine works just fine,  and fast..."

The application being used determines how much physical RAM is being used.  Some use more virtual memory and less physical
memory.what are you referring to by "usage"? Commit charge in the statusbar of task manager, Physical Memory used on the performance tab, or memory used by IE when you open the tabs?

Quote from: Computer_Commando on March 24, 2011, 04:35:21 PM
Some use more virtual memory and less physical memory.
Well, generally speaking, applications just ask for some memory to store data in and don't really care how it's managed (that is what the memory manager is for) Really the answer here depends on what "usage" value they mean. Thanks BC, I was hoping you'd clarify memory management, as it's beyond my expertise. This is indeed refreshing...
It's the exact opposite of the hundred's of posts we get from users worrying about too much memory usage...

Solve : Loosing Internet Connection in _some_ Programgs?

Answer»

I'm running W2K.  With programs like Outlook Express, my RSS Reader, and other similar programs, after 1/2, while the programs should poll the network and get updated DATA, it does not maintain its connection to get the data.  HOWEVER, I still have internent connectivity, as I'm able during that same period to switch to a browser, and pull a page.  Note, I do have a DLC connection.  Also, I'm sure my network is okay, because this is only present for two of my computers, and not for the other two.download spysweeper......from www.webroot.com.

my guess is you are using a P2P program.......?check the events log.....CONTROL panel///admin tools......what does netstat tell you??? try pinging your own server....check firewall logs.......get sygate...... Thanks for the reply.  A few follow-up QUESTOINS before I deep dive.

On both the "working" and "non-working systems", I'm using the same p2p programs, like AudioFeast, Gloolabs, AT&TWS Office Online, etc., so please let me know why you think a P2P program will CAUSE challenges.

Also, as troubleshooting, I turned off my firewall software, and the problem was still present so I don't think looking at the events log will help.

Also, I'm working off multiple pc's at home, and don't have a "server" as such, put I can check by pinging my own IP address, but will highly suspect I'll get a response, as at the same time, on my network, can access the "now working" PC for file shares.

Again, I appreciate your insight, just wanted to get a bit more clairification before doing what you recommended.

Warm regardars and I look forward hearing from you.

Answer»

Hi,

I have my MP3's stored on a network drive.  When I CONFIGURE the LIBRARY for this folder, it searches those folders, where MP3's reside, but doesn't recognize/add the files.  When I copy the folders and content to my local drive, all work as expected.  I'd appreciate INSIGHT on how to fix/resove this, as my preference is to store the data on my network drive.  I have deleted and re-installed WMP to no avail.  Also, my playlist at one point of the process from the network drive have been recognized, but no files are present.why did you delete wmp 10......or have you!I did not delete, but reinstalled it.  I thought that some of my settings might of got confussed, and wanted to do a fresh start.  NOTE, I tried this same experiment with another PC, using WM 9, and had the same result.

Solve : Can't wake computer up?

Answer»

:-/ Ever since I have had this Dell Dmension 4500 with WIN XP it has served me very well and never given me any nasty surprises.  When I would leave the pc and do something else, when I returned, the blank screen (or screen saver) would go away and the page I had on the monitor would appear again - just by moving the mouse.  A couple of weeks ago I think someone gave my pc a sleeping pill.  When I leave it to go do something, if I am GONE for a long period of time, it will not wake up again.  I have to shut down and reboot the system.  I have gone in to "properties" and played with the power settings (not really knowing what I am doing) and still can not get it back to where it was in the "good old days."  As you may have guessed by now, I am not exactly a PC guru - but I am good at light switches - and besides, what do you expect of a guy that is pushing 74.   I'm from an era of radio and TV was just a dream.    JohnB in El PasoHave you TRIED turning of HIBERNATION and then re-booting so that the old hyberfile.sys file is deleted and then turning hibernation back on again?

How much RAM does the system have?

How do you do that with the stairwell lights so that one switch switches on and the other switches off? ;-)

Solve : Cleaning my HDD?

Answer»

I have an older PC with all kinds of crap and a partition on the HDD. Can I copy the required windows files to reinstall after I format the HDD?What type of PC and is it still working? IF it's still working you could use many types of media storage to backup your files, program installer, drivers or personal info. by a CD/DVD(requires an optical drive), Flashdrive, PORTABLE EXTERNAL Drive, Hardrive with Enclosure on the condition that your PC is running and is virus free. Another type is also using a software to back-up files like Acronis(free or paid) or via network sharing folders(requires internet connection) on another PC. I have an older PC with all kinds of crap and a partition on the HDD. Can I copy the required windows files to reinstall after I format the HDD?

When you state and a partition this may be the recovery partition.  More and more manufactures are no longer sending disk to restore COMPUTERS it is now being stored on the HDD.

To answer the copy the required files for windows.  Would be less stressful to buy a copy of windows and go to the computers manufacture web site and download the drives.  But then again there is always the possibility that the partition you are talking about may be the system recovery. You cannot copy an installed version of Windows and be able to re-install it...this is by design.
You could however use a disk imaging app to transfer it to a new drive...
Or as SUGGESTED above find out if the other partition is in fact a recovery partition.http://www.restoredisks.com/

About $26.00. Will restore to factory fresh of the date of manufacture.

It is the most simple way (you get all the original programs, too.)

1. Remove the system case cover and examine your mainboard.

I.  Do not touch the mainboard whilst power is being FED.
II. Do not touch the mainboard when you have not taken precautionary measures against electro-static discharge.

2. Windows XP should automatically (re)detect the soundcard installed.

Solve : Trying to delete my hard drive to start new.?

Answer»

I have windows 98 SE. I need to restore my computer to  it's original state. I don't want any of my personal info on it. PLEASE GIVE ME  STEP-BY-STEP instructions on how to do this?? I'm giving it to someone and I need my info erased.Put your win98 disk in then boot your computer hitting whatever key you use to get into bios.
In bios change the boot ORDER to cdrom first then let it boot to the win98 disk.
There you will get an option to do a clean install.
Don't forget to save all of the things you want to keep to disk first.1. Create Boot diskette
2. Insert Boot diskette in FDD
3. Restart computer
-- Be certain to set FDD as the first boot device in the BIOS
4. START computer without CD-ROM support
5. Type A:\
6. From A:\ Type Format C:\ or Format X:\ where X is the station or partition you wish to format.why do you wish to *re-install win98?*?........make sure you have the drivers for you sound/video/modem etc.....

you could do this locate the* c:\windows\options \cabs folder......next to regsvr32 icon.........is one called setup.....if you were to click the icon.......is will take win98 back to the day it was first installed*..........this is most handle for people who have a pre-installed system....technically, FORMATTING the drive is not enough.  It is still possible to recover data.  You'll want to use something that'll completely wipe the drive.  You can download and use this tool, it works great and then there's no way any data can be recovered.  If you need additional assistance, you can reach me at ResourcePC.

Daveyou mean this >>..http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/download.shtml

i would invest in a new hard drive.....and keep the old one for storing important data on.....slave it.i'm new here, just joined.  but if i was wanting my info off first thing i would do is make a bootdisk, after starting without cd-rom support, run fdisk and delete the whole partition including the logistical drive.  then just for good measure after creating a new partition and restarting i would do a unconditional format.  With the forums help, I reinstalled windows 98SE. I was having resolution problems with my moiter, but I resolved this problem. (With help from the forum) I had my resource CD, so I didn't know that I needed my drivers for my modem. Solve : OEM software new directive from Microsoft??

Answer»

Hi all,

I have just been told by two computer shops that a new directive from Microsoft now means that you can buy OEM SOFTWARE such as Windows xp and as long as you buy something else like a mouse you can load this on your computer.

What I am not sure of is...can this be your existing computer or does it have to be new with no software on it.

Or would you have to but it on a new harddrive..

Can anyone help with my confusion?

I believe that stores are only allowed to sell an OEM version of Windows when the customer ALSO orders software that is compatible with the OEM version of Windows. Such as a mainboard, HARD Disk Drive, processor and other hardware. HOWEVER, I do not know if that INCLUDES input devices such as mice or keyboard.

Solve : Nero cannot format DVD?

Answer»

Nero cannot format my DVD+RW disc, it just takes a long time and won't work. STRANGE thing is, afterwards the DVD-drive won't eject the disc, it will not RESPOND to either manual press of the eject button or to eject it using windows. I have to restart the laptop to get the disc out again.
However, it will burn CD-RWs.

What to do?do you have a dvd drive writer?Of course, if not then trying to burn a DVD would be RATHER FUTILE, don't you think?

And yes, it is suppose to support the DVD+RW format.ok......have you tried this>>http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/nero-dvdburn.htm Quote

1. Of course, if not then trying to burn a DVD would be rather futile, don't you think?

I am SURE there is an amazing amount of people who still attempt to do so, even though they know.
Tried it. Out of curiosity I bought a DVD-RW and it worked nicely. However, DVD+RW is suppose to be supported. It is a crappy DVD-drive though

Solve : Blocked access by Host File?

Answer»

I have added a number of adresses to my host FILE, and it works very well. Most efficient CONTENT filter I have ever seen.

I am wondering; is it possible to have the browser display a [custom made] error message in the form of a webpage rather than a simpel error that tells the user the computer was unable to establish contact?

what like 404.......What a good idea
I guess instead of looping the site back to 127.0.0.1 you COULD loop it to anywhere you wanted to on the net & probably even to a html file on the computer itself.
You could write your own scary message to guarantee the user would never try and access that place again.
Keep me POSTED.

UPDATE:
HMMM? It looks like you can only redirect to an IP number. If you host a webpage on your computer, would it attempt to access that rather than display an error when connecting to a forbidden website?

I recall learning how to host a webpage from your own computer through certain Windows XP PROFESSIONAL components that needed to be installed seperatly. By typing 127.0.0.1 in the adress bar, it would access that page.

Would anyone care to fill in the gaps?http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1774I will look into that. Thank you for the link, Merlin.

Solve : Think my personal computer has been hacked, personal message on wallpaper. Help!?

Answer»

I am the only user of my personal computer (DELL desktop computer with windows xp-6 years old) and when I logged in someone wrote, "....ra (my daughters name) is great" across the wallpaper of my desktop. I am assuming it has been hacked but I don't know how.  I have MCAFEE Virus Scan and I also have run a malware virus scan prior to this event on the Microsoft Website. Do I need to change my ip address or the password to log in to my computer to fix this problem. Please help!none of those things. Look locally for the problem.

Consider the following scenario; if you ENCOUNTER a tree that says "Tim Rules" Do you assume that it was engraved by a band of evil terrorists in an attempt to control trees everywhere, or do you assume it's some juvenile NAMED Tim? Usually the latter, of course. Basically, you are drawing conclusions based on incomplete information. If you want to be really sure you should run through the guide found in the malware section and post a new topic with the appropriate logfiles there.

If the name was one you RECOGNIZE, it is most probably from someone you know, have you asked your daughter (an other family members)?  Also, you can check the properties of the file and find out when it was modified.

Solve : Computer freezes after startup?

Answer»

Hello forum,

I am trying to diagnos and fix this problem with my laptop and not have to spend obscene amounts of money or get stuck on the phone for hours.

I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop, Window XP, that I have been using for about 2 years now. Everything OK, until yesterday.

I boot the computer up, works ok for about 2 minutes, and instantly freezes. I have mouse movement, no keyboard, and have to hard shutdown every time cause everything is inactive. Started with firefox, i couldnt load a page. Now i try to load something else like iTunes, or AVG anti virus, it loads fine, then freezes.

Which direction should I go to fix this? I dont really know where to start. I trying booting in Safe Mode, and it did the same thing. (If i did safe mode correctly)

Thank you in advance for the help. I would really like to see this fixed.I was wondering about the safe mode thing... if you have your Xp CD's you might try booting from them, and using the "repair" option. that should fix it if it is a driver issue, or a corrupt windows problem... it is worth a try..What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?Nothing is new, that is what is weird. I was browsing the internet and it froze, and now this is the problem.1) Boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r

2) To check the ram, download memtest (http://www.memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.
What is the recovery console? Sorry for the dumb questions...Not dumb at all. Boot to the XP CD and CHOOSE the first repair option. That will take you to the recovery console. If you don't have an XP cd, please do the following instead:

Right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type:chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.
did the chkdsk /r

It said windows replaced bad clusters in

/WINDOWS/pchealth/helpctr/datacoll/CO2E7F~1.XML

and in

/DOCUME~1/ALLUSE~1/APPLIC~1/AVG10/log/AVGRSL~1.2

And now it seems to be stuck at 42% under verifying data after these last to actionsLet it run to completion...Its stuck at 42. Been like this for over 1.5 hrs... What should I do?Apparently the hd has some bad sectors and checkdisk moved data out of those sectors. You are probably going to have to replace the hd.

Leave checkdisk alone for a while longer. If after another hour or so it's still stuck at 42% you'll have to force a reboot - but that's generally not a good thing to do from checkdisk. Run the appropriate manufacturer's diagnostic:  http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
If you're lucky, it will mark the bad sectors and reassign new ones from the few spares available.Well its still stuck. About 2+ hours. Can i do this check disk again? What is it actually doing? and hd you mean hard drive.....? Thats not a good thing. Will I lose all my files? How much is this going to cost? And what is a sector?Hold power button down until it turns off.  If you can start it up again, copy your important data off on to flash drive or WHATEVER backup you have or you may lose everything.  New hard drives are about $50, but you haven't lost this one yet.  Dell has diagnostics at the bootup, F12 at the Dell logo.

Dell Inspiron, probably a Western Digital (WD) or Seagate hard disk drive (HD).  Download the Seagate Seatools for DOS (ISO CDROM image).  Create the bootable CD on your good computer & boot to the CD on the Inspiron.  Run the short & long DFT. Solve : Screen resolution keep changing?

Answer»

Odd but true.  I have a 19 inch widescreen that I use for my PC monitor.  I NORMALLY run it at 1152x864 but for some reason it is now at 1024x480.

If I adjust it to 1024x768, I LOSE an inch or two off the right hand side of the screen (a screen capture shows a FULL image).  Drivers of my Radeon xpress 200 are up to date and functioning normally, so my software tells me.

No idea why it has changed, any SUGGESTIONS for things I can check etc are gratefully received.

regardsYou need to check the docs for the 1`9 inch to SEE what resolutions it supports...

Solve : Nothing is working right?

HI there. Please help. I have exausted my brain in my attempts to correct my ISSUES.
#1 - I found my systems reources are low about 68-63.
#2 - I then checked  Internet Explorer and  where it should state a cypher strength.. nothing, it is blank. #3- I go to pull up a website, it will come up but be blank. #4- can pull up e-mail but cannot send or delete messages. #5 A pop up came up regarding critical updates for Windows; I click on this and it just sits there "checking for updates" forever! Does not do anything from there, it just sit there for hours if I let it.  I have done all my scans and defragmenting etc.  I cannot for the life of me remebmber how to fix this .  Please help.
Thank you'all.Well, asuming you have a valid internet connection on that PC I WOULD recommend a SPYware scan. Get the free SPY scanner from Micorsoft. Check for Viruses. From what I UNDERSTAND is that your browser seems to be hi-jacked. If you are using a DIAL-in modem, then DISCONNECT the cable! Your modem could be hi-jacked to AUTO dial sex numbers silently. I am not trying to scare you, but these things ACTUALLY do happen!

Restart the PC in safe mode and run all Anti-virus and Spyware cleaners! Try resseting the internet explroer defaults etc.

Solve : STARTUP MENU not START MENU?

Answer»

How can I   (please keep it simple, LOL )  PERMANENTLY remove items from my STARTUP MENU.

Not just uncheck the box,  but eliminate the LISTED item. THX.

 Wind XP Pro

IE 8.Be cautious what you remove may be needed for a peripheral or software on you computer to run properly.

Hover over the one you wish to remove right click on it and select delete.

Even better find the software that put it there and disable it through there.
 1)  If it is unchecked  and the comp runs fine . . . do I need it ?

i.e.,  the Event Manager   for my printer ?

 2)  "Right clicking'  a listed item    does not bring up a  'Delete'  option, or anything else.1. I think it is more important to enumerate or list those items you want to delete before proceeding.
2. And why you want to delete them. Is there a problem with SYSTEM Performance?
3. You could also use MLin's StartupCPL StandAlone EXE Version(34 KB).
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml1) Download and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml). If you uncheck an item it is removed from the startup location in the registry or your startup folder.

2) Are you saying you want to UNINSTALL a program in addition to keep it from starting? If so, go to Control Panel - Add / Remove

Solve : Slow Performance And Frequent Hard Drive Usage?

Answer»

It seems no matter what i am trying to do, computer always uses hard drive. I have Internet Explorer 8.0 open with 4-5 tabs and everytime i switch tabs it takes at least 30 seconds to switch and all this time hard drive is loading. Or for example i opened tab with YouTube video fully loaded and paused it. After a while i return to it to resume playing and then this loading starts. And this does not happen with Internet Explorer only. It seems computer does not use memory or maybe 1Gb is not enough? What is strange is that when application is loaded, it responds well for some time but later as time passes it starts to load slow and computer seems to use hard drive a lot.

Please take a look at my Task Manager below:

What do you find strange here? Is it too many handles? Maybe Page FILE is too high?

Here is a screenshot of processes running sorted from processes taking most memory to least:

Laptop Specs:

Intel Centrino Duo T2400 1.83Ghz
1Gb Ram
80Gb Hard Drive
GeForce Go7400
Sort the processes tab in task manager on the cpu column and see if some process is spiking. If not, try a clean boot and work backwards (Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (disable everything from loading) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming process, but it is the BEST way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.)It appears that one or more apps are using all of the Paging File (Virtual Memory), which would explain all the disk activity.  How much is allocated to the Page File?Initial Size: 1536Mb
Maximum Size: 3072MbPaging File settings are fine.  Add more RAM, if possible, or load less apps.  Firefox alone is using over 400MB.Do you know why Firefox would use that much memory? When i start Firefox it does not use that much memory, but as time PROGRESSES it goes up.I don't know, but mine is using half that much with 2 tabs open.Is there a maximum memory my laptop can handle regardless of limit of slots? I mean if i have 2 slots and use 1GB in 1st slot and 8GB in 2nd slot there might be a chance that my laptop cannot handle so much RAM?

I also heard that memory must be installed in matching parts i.e. 1st slot 2GB and 2nd slot 2GB (1st slot 2GB and 2nd slot 8GB). Is this true? How much memory & what configuration your laptop can handle is determined by:
1.  The manufacturer of the laptop.  Consult them or www.crucial.com
2.  The OS you are using.  32-bit OS won't recognize more than about 3GB
Looks like you are using WinXP-32bitThat is correct, i use Windows XP 32-bit. How did you find out?

Here is Crucial's analysis:

Side Note: Make sure you have updated to the latest version of Firefox. It has much better memory management than its older versions.3.6.16? Nah it is only security update, not performance update. I have been waiting for performance update since 3.5 everytime new version was announced and was disappointed. What version are you using now?

Every version usually includes some stability update.

It may be worth installing Firefox 4.0 under a different folder (i.e. instead of C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\, install it to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 2\) - just to give it a try. QUOTE from: Boris_yo on March 26, 2011, 07:14:17 PM

That is correct, i use Windows XP 32-bit. How did you find out?,,,
Just an educated GUESS from the appearance of the Task Manager.  It seems you can add 1GB RAM.  I would recommend adding the RAM & see if performance improves.  Crucial's price is $18.99Why Crucial only?

Solve : COUNTIF formula help needed?

Answer»

Hello,

This will likely be RUDIMENTARY to regular readers, but I'm stumped.  Here's the situation:

An excel spreadsheet, the first column, say A1-A100, populated with about 13 different categories, say fruits.
The second - 20TH columns, say B1-U100, populated with THREE different choices, say R, Y, or G, for each fruit.

I want to summarize the number of Rs, Ys, and Gs in a table, rows named for the fruits, columns with their respective headers.

Because of the complexity, a pivot table doesn't seem to be able to do the job.  I've tried COUNTIF, but this WANTS to apply to the whole column, not BREAK it down for each fruit.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any and all help!

I don't really THINK there is much information you need. I am using XP Home Edition though, I'm quite sure.Best and 1st thing to do with a used machine is a wipe and a clean install... Quote from: patio on March 22, 2011, 07:25:17 PM

I don't have any recovery CD's. Have you tried leaving the password blank? Quote from: JJ 3000 on March 22, 2011, 07:29:27 PM

It may have a HIDDEN recovery partition ...have you checked the Manual ? ?
Ordering 1 from the manuf. for a small fee may be another option to consider. Quote from: patio on March 22, 2011, 07:32:52 PM

I don't have a manual or anything. I just have the computer and its charger.
I don't think I will be allowed to order anything, even if I'd pay for it.

Download the file boot CD from here: http://www.pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

And burn the ISO to a CD using whatever CD burner you like. After it's done burning, restart the computer with the disk in and boot from it. You may need to change the boot order in your BIOS. Be careful, and pay attention to the instructions when you boot the CD. It will clear the password for the account.http://www.restoredisks.com/

For about $26.00. Factory fresh restore.

Solve : Not given the option to burn pictures to a disc?

Answer»

I dabble in photography, and recently shot a wedding.  I took the memory card out of my camera, put it in the usb drive and downloaded the IMAGES to my laptop.  I wanted to select the better pictures to provide to the couple, so I created a separate folder to put them in.  Then when trying to BURN the to a disc.....I was not even given the option to do so.  Usually there is an option that says copy files to CD or burn to CD or something along those lines, however this time there was NO option at all.  I put the memory card and usb drive in my home PC, and the same thing.  So decided to try another PC......3 PC's later and still the same OUTCOME. No option to burn these images to a disc.

I have been doing this for a couple years and never had a problem until now.  Any reccommendations?I'm not sure what steps you are taking when attempting to copy to CD but this is how I do it.

Open the folder and click on Edit \ Select All (all images should be selected at that point.

On the left-side menu, I select Copy to CD (with CD in drive)  The wizard makes it very easy.

I hope this helps.

Those are the steps I always took before, but this is where I'm running into the problem now.  There is no longer the option to COPY TO CD.
Can you tell US the specs of your machine and what burning software you have installed?

Also when you look in the device manager do you see any yellow ! marks?

Okay, I'm computer illiterate....what specs are you talking about?  The burning software is whatever comes with Windows XP.

I'll check and see if there are any yellow !'s, if you tell me how to get to the device manager.Right click my computer and go to properties. Look for the tab called hardware.

When you open my computer do you still see your CD drive? What happens if you put a music CD in the drive? Does it play?

Solve : Install not enough memory?

Answer»

Hello all,

May be old NoteBook to install a program if there are not enough memories in the machine?
Only 56 MB are instead of 64 MB.
OS: XP or Windows 2000.

ThanksDo you mean hard drive space?

How much free room do you have and what are the specs for your laptop? What program are you trying to install?

System requirements for Windows XP operating systemsIf your gonna run XP on 64MG of RAM i see a spinning hourglass in your future...I have Compaq Armada 100S.

Now runs Windows Xp well enough...
All memory: 56 MB

I would LIKE install temperature
measuring program.

When I install program it send message "not enough memory you need minimum 64 MB free"

I ask this because of that, because it was said once that it is XP at least 64 mb of memory is needed for his running, but than the example shows it, with fewer memories can be installed. The setup program will not allow you to install Windows XP with less then 64MB of RAM. That is the absolute minimum for installation. However, you can REMOVE memory up to a minimum of a little over 16MB (at which point XP refuses to boot) and still have it run. Slowly. But it runs.

note that you also cannot have 56MB of memory installed. your notebook has 64MB of memory, 8MB of which is allocated to the integrated graphics adapter.

As has been noted previous though you may very well have confused disk space and memory space. Either the program is TELLING you it cannot run or install with less then 64MB of free memory (which is impossible for reasons that you've noted) or you are low on hard drive space and there is simply no room to install it.I have enough disk space.
Now 4G free...The setup could not be his time for the video card from somewhere else to give a memory, or that's *censored*?

you cannot install 56MB of Memory in a computer. you can only buy sticks in sizes that are powers of two, simply because of the way the Memory works. Given that, you have 56MB, if you had three slots, and one had 32MB, one had a 16MB stick, and a third had an 8MB stick. That is however far less likely then 8MB being used for the integrated graphics card.

None of this is relevant, unless you are trying to install Windows XP. If you already have windows XP installed and it is another program that refuses to install, then

Could it mean Virtual Memory? It has to be an ancient computer to only have 64MB of physical memory. Quote from: Tashnav on March 30, 2011, 03:48:26 AM

Probably not, no.Everyone is saying what you can't do. What you can do is increase the size of the pagefile. This system appears to be ancient, so it be BETTER to use something older than XP, but if you just want to make it work. . .

Start -> Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Click Settings under Performance -> Advanced -> Change
Now type in the size of pagefile you want. When done, click OK till all the windows are closed. Done!

Yes. Because what they can't due happens to be within the scope of what they are trying to do. They can of COURSE add more physical RAM, which would, and most likely is the only real solution.

On the other hand, the solution could be averted by not having a problem. a System that old has no real need for a temperature monitoring program. Particularly one that will probably take up a good portion of active memory.

They could also dance around in there underwear. coincidentally, that would do just as much good as changing the size of the pagefile. If the pagefile is set to system managed- it will be system managed. Even if they DID change it from the defaults, and set- let's say for the sake of argument, no pagefile-

they would be seeing out of memory messages. They wouldn't be getting prompts from the installer that the program will not install when you have less then XXX MB installed. having more virtual memory isn't going to fool the installer. It will still find the same amount of physical RAM and it will still find that it's less than 64MB. Quote

He was seeing out of memory messages, wasn't he? All I can say is that I have had programs that wouldn't install on an older machine and changing the size of the pagefile fixed the problem.
