Mario:

I'm assuming you have a hard drive enclosure kit with a USB 2.0 connector, something like this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=YCSMEJULGTWZBKC4D3JFAFQ?skuId=6991605&type=product&productCategoryId=cat01069&id=1099392683637

However, i'm not sure what you have done.  Are you saying you have a new hard drive inside the laptop and the OLD hard drive connected externally through the hard drive enclosure kit?  or are you saying you now have no hard drive connected internally to the laptop?

Did you install Windows XP while the hard drive was connected to this computer over a network or via an external CD-ROM drive?  or did you install Windows XP while the hard drive was connected to a different computer and now you want to boot to the OS while the hard drive is connected to this laptop?

Are you able to boot to XP at all with this laptop or do you get an error when you try to do so?  Is there any OS INSTALLED on the first partition?  (If there is, what OS is it?  Is it the OS that was corrupted?)

If you can connect the two computers together you should be able to install to the laptop from the desktop.Hi Pc Doc for Christ:

Thnka you for your response.  Ibhave took the hd of my vaio latop out encassed it then attached it thrue via usb 2.0 then I started my desktop pc, went to disk managenment in XP then format my hd laptop.  As i was saying I do not have a cd-rom nor floppy not even a network connection. So I can not connect via the net. Now I havce split the hd of my laptop into two partition
one has nothing on it but formated, the other has an exact replica of my Xp Corporate Edition.

I hope that is clarfying my problem? or is it still clear as mud L.O.L.

MarioHi mac, Tanks for the repply. Unfortunally I do not have any network connection built in nor do I have a cd-rom nor floppy, the extension bay for that laptop is about the same price I paid for this used PIII 500 Vaio Laptop

tanks anywayDoc,

Can a serial cable be used for this, port to port?actually I dont even have a serial the only thing I have for this thin notebook is a usb (that is reconized in windows) and pcmcia OH an output video rca format

no serial,no parallell. I hoping a God of computer will come to my rescue! because I dont like to shell out 289.00 for an extensdion bay

Solve : Sound card install window every time XP starts up?

Answer»

I recently installed a new sound card and now every time I restart Windows the install window comes up and says it's getting READY to install the hardware.  It's the install window that had initially come up from the CD with the sound card driver on it.  I have Windows XP Home.  What's going on and how can I GET rid of it? When the hardware wizard appears, insert the installation CD, and click on next... Let it install... If the autoplay for the CD appears, just exit. You only need to install from the hardware wizard this time.

[GLB]Flame[/glb]I already installed the hardware with the hardware wizard.  I already installed the driver with the CD too.  The sound card works just FINE.  It's just that the install window for my specific sound card keeps coming up, not the hard ware wizard. Is it compatible?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Did you remove the previously present soundcard?
..........maybe the wizard is looking for updated drivers.....and its loaded the ones from thwe disk for the time being.......typical winxp....... I went to the manufactur's site for the sound card and DOWNLOADED the updated driver.  No more setup window, woohoo.  Thanks! I like that saying......woohoo.......i should have called the missus that

Solve : starting windows fresh?

Answer»

Well, I got this system error, isass.exe, for overclocking my computer too much.. I had to put a boot disk in and re install the hardrive and stuff, so I did. Now, after doing that I need to reinstall windows. I have the CD and all set but the PROBLEM is when I get to this screen
screen(don't mind the enter thing it's the only picture I found) http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/images/pressenterscr.jpg my numlock goes off all of a sudden and I can't press Enter to setup windows. Before I did the harddrive all over, it did this too, because I tried to use the repair instead, which would have worked, but I couldn't cause the numlock would go off. Then out of no where I got the boot disk error and that's why I had to reinstall the hardrive and all... So anyways, what can I do to make this thing let me start installing windows?

EDIT: Oh and it's not professional, it's home edition.   Quote

Well, I got this system error, isass.exe, for overclocking my computer too much

Illogical.

It has most likely been caused by a virus. I suggest you reformat the Hard Disk Drive before attempting to install Windows XP. You can best do so by creating a boot diskette if Windows XP setup does not function well. But it couldn't possibly been a virus at all. Here's the thing, I just bought the computer, only had it for 3 days or so, the only things i've installed are games, that's about it. This error came after I overclocked my settings.
My buddy tells me that isass.exe is a security thing or something and that it did this because it didn't allow me to oc from factory form that much. I already used the bootdisk, formatted, did the partition stuff, this is the last step, but my numlock is off on that screen. If you believe your settings are overclock related, you should reset the BIOS to default factory settings. This may help resolve your issue.

I believe this is the file name you are referring to.

It is, as far as I know, in no way related to overclocking.Well I don't understand how I could have gotten a virus....... I have eZ antivirus on that computer. I already reset the settings, and the cmos battery. The anti virus scanner may have been malfunctioning.

However, heat related errors could be the cause as well. It could be that you have damaged the CPU or other computer peripherals by overclocking.

Have you tried using a different keyboard?I may have because when I turned it on right after the over clock its fan was louder than usual, but it cooled down and it sounds normal now. But that couldn't be it I mean everything that I was able to do was fine I just can't get to install this thing.. I have a windowsxp pro that I should actually think of trying...

I was thinking of using another keyboard, i'll try it now as a matter of fact.

edit:okay the keyboard wasn't the problem ; - /Your keyboard ceases to function as soon as you press a button, correct?

Try both an USB and PS/2 keyboard.Nope on the bottom when it says Starting windows, after loading all the setup files, it goes off and I can't toggle it back on or anything.

Great now I'm screwed for real, I was pushing in the hardrive cords in tothe hardrive and I moved some wire and the pc just shut off and won't TURN on, i'm so DEAD. I just got this computer and I already broke it like a retard, damnitYou should not push or pull any type of non-hot swappable cable when the computer is turned on.

I suggest you read the warranty license and see what your options are.

I have a Fujitsu tablet that crashed. When I went to try to reboot, the system wouldn’t go past the bios to start up again in any of the startup options, ie. When I see it in Disk Management, I am ABLE to right-click the white bar where it shows the letter, but unable to then select Change Drive Letter and Paths. Solve : Is this possible???

Answer»

Hello all, I have two HDD's set up in RAID 0, and partitioned , my OS is on the C partition. Can I reformat and reinstall XP Home on the C drive and leave the other 2 partitions intact? Will all the programs and APPS on the other partitions still WORK? Common sense tells me no, as the Windows registry will be all new. Help me out here , as my common sense ain't all that sensible.  :-/The programs may or may not work. They may be reset to their installation defaults and require you to insert the registration code again. Or they may not work at all.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308424&sd=tech

Solve : WIN XP, SP@, No Drives in My Computer?

Answer»

I have lost the drives in My Computer when I click on the Desktop Icon or go to Start My Computer. It worked before. I have seen that the registry controls whether it works or not. Here is my entry. Can someone who has WIN XP, SP2 please post their full entry . The entry is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Thanks, regards, Bob.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by ADMIN]Why are you LOOKING in regedit for your HDD's ? ?
Do they show up in Disk Management ? ?

What happened prior to this ? ?Hi. Thanks. I want the HDD's and CD drives to show up when I use the My Computer Icon on the Desktop and on the Start Menu My Computer as they were before. The drives all work as I can use all my shortcuts to run programs or view folders on all the drives. I can explore the drives by using IE. I had another problem (not being able to install NFW 2.0) and was told to set the C:\ Windows folders to read/write before I ran the NFW 2.0 install which is what I did and from that point on My Computer does not show the drives. I was told that the registry entry above controlled whether My Computer would work. If I use Windows Explorer My Computer does not show any drives. Regards, Bob.Answer what i posted...
And what is NFW ? ?NFW is Microsoft Net Framework 2.  Yes they all do show in Computer Management - Device Manager and also Disk Management. Bob.Well i have no way of knowing what changes you have done in the registry...
You may want to try running sfc /scannow from a Command prompt and re-boot...
No guarantees...Hi. The strange thing is that I did not make any registry edits at all. I found by Google search that the registry entry controlled whether My Computer would work or not. It may be a false lead. What does sfc /scannow do?. Regards, Bob. Quote from: BobFam on March 05, 2011, 09:53:53 PM

Solve : MAJOR problem, need help ASAP!?

Answer»

Well, I made a topic before on another forum about how my computer started not working (I turned it on, missing taskbar/unable to copy/paste/move icons/ low resource and disk space error) I TRIED everything so then I've been told to use the OS CD that this PC came with to reinstall XP (Dell 3.0 Ghz P4 512 Ram 80GB HD).

Well I was about to but then I ran ad-aware and deleated some detected files and now my PC won't do ANYTHING!

First I tried loading boot from CD (inserted Dell OS cd) and hit enter, I get the blue message and it reboots, now all I get is...

Windows cold not start because of the following file missing or corrupt:

Windows/System32/Config/System

It says press R at the first screen to try to repair...i do and it just reboots everyime i do.

Can't do ANYTHING, HELP!Can you boot into safe mode?

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]Nope, same error no matter what I do.Try the following:

1. Before loading Windows press F8
2. Select Last known good configuration.

What type of anti-spyware, Trojan Horse and Virus scanners do you have? That don't work either, already tried.

I used Ad-adware. Here was the situation before this happened...

The morning I turned the PC on and it worked perfectly, then I turned it off and when to school

Wehn I GOT back, I turned it on, I notice the Taskbar/start bar was like have the size of the regular and I was unable to move my icons. Also couldn't copy and paste. McAfee also started and gave me an error that Activeshield couldn't start because of low disk resource or disk space.

I rebooted and I notice to took longer than usual to boot.
When it booted, there was no bar at ALL! I couldn't shutdown/log off etc.

I went to ask whats wrong and google some info but nothing worked. I shut off and on a few times but to no avail. Ran trendmicro and ad-aware and no problem.

Got some posts about repairing the PC using the OS cd.

Bro went on a different user and still the same problem, ran Ad-aware deleted something and now this.

Now I can't do anything. Also I was just able to change it to boot from CD but when I tried to install I get

Page_Fault_In_Nonpaged_area BSODTake a look a ryans post>>http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=pw_harddrive&message.id=819That didn't really help me (not to mention I had no clue what he was talking about) but Ill post on the dell board. chosing recovery console gives me the same thing. I just opened up the tower and checked everything, everything was where they should of been.

Edit- yea, I CHANGED it to boot from CD and like I said, got to the Terms of Agreement, hit F8 to "I agree" then I get the blue message.I've since resolved this problem. I simply needed to HIT F6 during the Windows XP CD boot and install my PERC 320 / DC SCSI Controller Drivers. I was then able to access the recovery console and perform the fix detailed in the MS knowledge base. Seems the WinXP boot disk only supports IDE drives. Nice of DELL to tell me to call back Monday even though i have 3 year next day call out  >>>>>>>>> ryans  reply>>>>>>>>>>.Merlin, so is this a special Dell version of XP?

I have tried 2 thing 1) Removing the battrey nil help 2) Jamper the Bios and clear all password and install the jamper back to normal nil help.
My operating system is Win Xp
The software I was trying to install is Intel express Installer Drivers and applications for Intel Desktop Board D865GSA
The computer was working fine before only the VGA CARD software was missing, and that is what I was trying to fix
Any help will be APPRECIATED Have you tried hitting Enter at the password prompt ?
Hi Patio, thanks for the reply,
Tried hitting Enter nothing is happening still asking for password
Tried to load password bootable CD and followed on screen instructions still the same??Is it asking for a windows password or is it asking for a password before it even gets that far?

If it is a windows password for your user name if you can access safe mode you can remove it manually there too.

2) Jamper the Bios and clear all password and install the jamper back to normal nil help.
This would only work if there is a BIOS password set and you have to boot the system up for it to work properly.  This will not clear windows or software passwords.

I need help, there are no viruses on my computer!!!
from jtAn application you have installed may need longer to shutdown than Windows XP is willing to give it.

Shutdown all user-installed applications before shutting down Windows XP to see if this shows any sign of improvement.

there are loads of applications in task manager i don't want to shut down the wrong one because "it might cause undesirable effects"...
shall i make a list of the applications run by the administrator and the system?
It may cause undesireable effects until you reboot. It is a  matter of trial and error.

Additional:

It may be wise as to install and Hijackthis so that we may be able to determine if another application is causing the problem. If you copy the log the application creates, we will automatically see your run list for start up.ok here it is...

Solve : Changing OS System?

Answer»

hello...  pardon me for been so direct. here it goes:

i have both the Windows 98 SE CD and Windows Home Edition(which says bootable and upgrade, original full version)

Currently i am running Win 98 SE. because of that, i cannot run photoshop cs 8 and a lot of other program and stuffs.

so i want to change to win xp HE.... i want to delete all the stuff in my win 98 and i only want win xp he on my pc...

i am very confused as to what to do... any help would be appreciated. currently its 12:52 AM over here... so i will be back at 1pm.... hope to hear from all of you as soon as POSSIBLE. thank youwhere is this rest of your question?Your computer may not be compatible with programs such as Photoshop 8 and Windows XP because it might simply lack the processing power.

1st make sure your computer will run XP.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/upgrading/default.mspx
Then put the xp disk in, boot your computer, enter bios & set the cdrom to boot first.
When it boots to the xp disk choose the option to do a fresh install.
Remember you will lose everything on your hard drive.what does Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor means?

i used pc wizard to find out what is  inside my computer system. i passed every requirements but stumbled on this.

how  do  i enter bios?
What video adaptor do you have?

Normally enter bios by hitting Del at bootup.i cannot find video adaptor.. is it the same as video card? if it is, then mine is S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR.
how do i set it to boot from cd?
the only option i have is F2:setup and F11: boot menu. which one do i go?

Yes, video adaptor is the video card.
Google for "S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR" and see if it comes up to the xp specs.
Google for your monitor and see if it comes up to the xp specs.
Read your mobo book to set the boot order.i google for my monitor like you said. mine is Nissei Sangyo but then the result showed this http://list.driverguide.com/list/company732/
with all the "CM.....Driver" which mine dont haveIt seems that Nissei Sangyo only make a superscan, is this yours?
How old is it? What size is it?i paste the whole thing of mine for you to check:

Solve : Wrong color in dsl program.?

Answer»

Trying to reinstall my dsl program after a system crash where my hd was completely wiped.  Have reinstalled Win98 and checked the hd for errors, etc. and reinstalled the basic programs I need (ie. MSOffice), but when I load up the CD for my dsl program, the colors on the logo are wrong, and some parts of pages are missing, such as pictures and places where you MAKE choices.  I cannot complete the installation because of missing parts.

Any clues?  Checked the CD itself on my laptop, its fine.Have you installed & updated your video drivers?Yes, did that.  The dsl program is that only thing that is acting this way.  Been online with my IP, they say its not the program, its within my pc.What are your COLOUR settings set to?256.  Tried to go at dsl loadup in a different way and got the message that the internet connection wizard failed to load from Win98SE install.  Not sure if that matters, SINCE the dsl program has its own wizard.  Your ISP is correct. It is your computer. You need a minimum of 16Bit colours.
tools internet options advanced...click restore defaults....Amazing!  Changed to 32bit color and restored to default.  Thanks guys.  Saved me some $.Well, almost.  DSL program works, but, it can't find the drivers for the dsl modem.................still searching.remove the dsl modem from the device manager and re-boot...now boot up........now shut down.....now reatttach the modem.... now load the disk .PAIN in the harris.....but that windows.bearcat  ......Try here .......

You should find it on that site .....

Is it modem driver or your ethernet driver thats missing ?

Solve : Formating HD: FAT32 vs NTFS?

Answer»

I´ve got an old PC (about 5 years) and running MS Win XP Pro. It runs with to seprate HD with 2 partitions on one and 3 on the other.  I´ve now (finally) gotten around to formating my primary drive (C:), but when formating through windows, I´m not able chose FAT32. I can only FORMAT in NTFS!?

It should be noted, that I´m currently running FAT32 on all my drives, and can´t find a good reason for switchin to NTFS.

Should I just boot with DOS, and do it "the hard way", or does ANYONE got any good sugestions?XP will only let you format drives of less than 32 Gb to FAT 32. I use all NTFS drives and NTFS is recommended for drives over 32 Gb.

If you WANT to use a C: drive formatted to FAT32 then make it smaller with a partition resizer. I use the one which comes with BootIT NG. (You don't need to install BootIT NG so just cancel the install screens and go to the Partition Work button.)

NTFS is usually more stable for large drives. If you have a swap partition somewhere and if you make it 2·0 Gb you can format it to FAT16 which is thought to be faster.

See www.ntfs.com for more and take a LONG read of www.pcguide.com for a complete detailing of file systems. Thanks for the help :-)My pleasure.

Solve : Saving on the desktop?

Answer»

My husband and I both have seperate  login accounts on our Windows XP computer.

The problem is, whenever he saves something onto his desktop it shows up on my desktop.  If I try and delete it, it deletes it from his desktop.  However, none of my stuff ends up on HIS desktop.  So my desktop is getting cluttered with all of his work FOLDERS, and I'm not sure how to make it stop.

Thoughts ANYONE?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q279783/ Quote

We've tried that.  We are both listed as Computer administrators.

It's a PRETTY recent problem (it just started HAPPENING a few weeks ago)To Make Changes to an Account
1. Click Change an account in the Pick a task list box.
2. Click the account that you want to change.
3. Select the item that you would like to change:• Click Change the name to change the name that appears on the Welcome screen for the account.
• Click Change the picture to change the picture that is used to represent the user account. You can use any image file on the computer for the user's picture.
• Click Change the account type to change the account type to increase or decrease the user's rights on the computer.
• Click CREATE/change the password to create or change the password for the user and create or change the password hint.
• Click Delete the account to delete the user account from the computer. When you delete the account, you are given the option to save the user's files on the computer.

Note: You can not delete the account for a user that is currently logged on to the computer.

And the [problem is this>> We are both listed as Computer administrators] the pc does not not the difference.....power user! There is very few software out there that will allow you to choose for what user you wish to install the application.

Solve : Dialup superceding Network?

Answer»

I am currently running a wired broadband solution at my house. Lately, after resetting my router settings, I have found that on some of my computers (those that have dialup information on them, should the broadband EVER fail), the software trying to pull info off the net will TRY to establish a dialup connection, as though it was entirely want of a legitimate connection.
This happens less often then not, and infrequently on a computer that I use. The requested information will not load until I cancel the dialup attempt, at which point it loads at proper speed. I have considered removing all dialup information from the afflicted computers, but am hoping that there is a simpler way to go about things. Does anyone have any idea as to how I might resolve this problem without eliminating the aforementioned data?
Thanks. Sorry if this problem has been addressed before. I tried the search function but was probably unable to describe my problem to technical satisfaction.

Solve : COMCTL32.dll??

Answer»

hello all,

new user here. i have tried checking FAQ but no luck there.

i've got a dell latitude D510, 1GB RAM, 40GB HDD running XP SP2. Battery died so i replaced it. Laptop worked for 2 days then yesterday started GIVING a BSoD. Did chkdsk /r which normally works for me. System started booting then gave a message along the lines of 'Windows could not load COMCTL32.dll, re-installing the application may fix it'. I did a system recovery using the recovery console and now i get the "windows is starting up message then it just goes blank, i'm just left with a pretty blue screen and nothing else. I'd rather not reformat the system unless i absolutely have to, so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Can you get to the advanced boot options screen (start tapping F8 as soon as the system starts to boot). If so, can you boot to safe mode?yes, SORRY, 4got to mention that i've tried booting to safe mode. All i get is a BLACK screen with "safe mode" round the screen and that's it. No desktop icons, i cant even get the start menu to pop up. it just sort of hangs there till i switch it offWell, let's try a repair install. Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option. XP will install on top of itself. Done correctly, all programs and settings will remain as is. After you get back into Windows you'll have to go to Windows Update and install all updates. You should also install SP3.

Here's a step by step guide: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/Hi,

tried it twice but still the same result  You can try to download it....

http://www.dll-files.com/comctl32.zip?0VLlVFVLfR

you will need to copy it to your system32 folder after you unzip it.

Hello, downloaded the dll file but couldn't copy it to the Windows folder. Like i SAID, i only get a pretty blue screen but no log on screen. I tried to use safe mode with command prompt but i still couldn't get past the "safe mode" screen. No icons, no start menu, nothing. I was able to retrieve the data from the system so i ended up reformating . wish i could mark it as solved. thanks for the help.Sorry things didn't work out.

But you are up and running. Did you save your data off the drive?

Solve : Non bootable CD - Cannot boot from CD?

Answer»

Hi all

I do not know how, but I have been able to format my ACER 1300 laptop with Windows XP because of a very bad Delphi.gen virus (buddies, you do not try to reclaim archives of pendrive infected if you do not know how; just format). I want to install Windows, the one that is, and having always placed in D:unit different Windows XP and 98SE CDs in perfect state (they work in my other PC), I have proven these 3 alternatives:

1. Starting from CD directly: " Non bootable CD in ATAPI CD; " Missing OS"

2. Starting from diskette with Ultimate Boot CD Loader (little program of solution to Non-Emulation Booting, typical ACER´s JOKE; Rafaelmbaez thanks): " Cannot boot from CD. Press any key to boot from HDD or ESCape to reboot" " Missing OS"

3. Starting from diskette with diskboot98 (it does not matter to me that it is not Windows XP, prefers although it; thanks sndrdk): " Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu" "1. Start to computer with CD-ROM support".
Finally, it opens A:\_ (MS-DOS). I follow FILE-OPEN and attempt to open AUTORUN.INF or INSTALAR.EXE. The CD starts, but nothing happens and stops.

Somebody please help me with any of this 3 options? What should I do on the 3rd A:\ > _?Find out the cd-rom drive letter and type X:\setup (Replace X with the actual CD-ROM drive letter.)

or

1. type X: and press enter (Replace X with the actual CD-ROM drive letter.)

2. type setup and press enter

Quote from: amnada_macc on March 02, 2011, 04:56:39 AM

I follow FILE-OPEN

In MS-DOS? Really?
Thank you very much for your quick answer. I did what you said, but nothing happened. Then I read something about deleting, creating and formatting partitions. It took me two days (9 hours formatting C:).

Things are better now, I followed yor advice (typing E: setup) and windows 98SE started installing, but it won´t INSTAL it totally because of this ERROR:
SU995035 Error Message During Windows 98 Setup

So now I will follow Microsoft instructions and see.

My idea is to install this Windows 98SE and then from there try to install the XP version. As I said, my two well-working XP CDs are read at the moment as "non boot CDs". What do you think?

Cheers!

PS: FILE-OPEN comes while using diskboot98 "Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu" - "1. Start computer with CD-ROM support"

Hi, this Microsoft SU995035 Error Message won´t work either. It says:

For Windows 98-based computers:
Restart your computer.
Press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On SELF Test (POST), and then choose command prompt only from the Startup menu.
At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:
cd\windows
ren setver.exe setver.old
Extract a new copy of the Setver.exe file from the Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM.

These commands are "no valid" for my PC; what should I do?? Thanks in advance.Windows98, Edition 1 are not bootable CD's.  Win98SE is bootable.
Get bootable CD from:  www.bootdisk.comThank you,

It is a W98SE CD, but don´t worry, finally I managed to launch the XP CD (pressing F10 while the system starts, amazing).

Anyway, forget W98. So I RUN my XP CD, it installs everything and then ask for resetting; it resets and... starts with the instalation again, as nothing happened before!!
I ran a chkdsk and it said "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems." If I look into fdisk now there are no partitions after I formatted C: the only one I had.

Any explanation?
Sounds like the hard drive is failing.

Hi, It wasn´t that bad at all. After a google search I found this program AEFDISK (thanks Micca) that helps formatting properly. And also found out that while installing Windows you must restart without any diskette or CD in, only when it asks for it. So I tried again... and this time it worked!! I have WXP again!!

Thanks for your advices, I hope this will help others.

Solve : OS doesn't want to execute changes to default settings in control panel?

Answer»

I recently bought a second-hand IBM Thinkpad T43, with Windows XP Professional (genuine) over the internet. It has a problem I've never encountered before and has me stumped. It doesn't want to execute any changes to its default settings in the Control Panel.

For example, I wanted to switch off sounds. I selected the 'No Sounds' sound scheme through the control panel, LIKE I have done on every other laptop I have. But it still makes sounds! When I go back to check, the 'no sound' is still showed as being the selected sound scheme.

Another example. Under the default power scheme, the screen goes to screensaver after 5 min of inactivity. Whatever amount I change it to, it still goes to screensaver after 5 min. Regardless of the fact that in the power options, it will display the time I put in.

So it accepts any changes, it just doesn't execute them.
My user account is set as the Computer Administrator.Crete a new user with administrator level. The new user should be fine.Wow...CLICK "APPLY" after SELECTING the customize options.

Solve : Product key for win x.p?

Answer» HI.
Can anyone tell me where to find my product key for win x.p? Not the LABEL on the bottom that’s completely worn away.

I need to format and re-install to sell the machine, is it stored SOMEWHERE on the operating SYSTEM.

Thanks.Don't format it. You might lose the OS for GOOD.
Is the system functional? Why do you ant to format it?
What make model is it? it matters. A few OEM systems do not require the product key. Some models have a way to restore the OS without the need for the normal install method.
Try the best you can to read the worn out label.

Video Cacheable, Video Shadow, Video RAM Cacheable, Write Combining, Address range shadowing, Memory Write Posting. Check also Primary Display(PCI or AGP).light stays the same, green.
Many of the error messages encountered while installing Windows XP can be attributed to a conflict with your computer's hardware. Unfortunately, as the problems are many, there's no one solution that's a sure fix. Some of the most common hardware CONFLICTS come from mass storage devices. This could be an incompatible hard drive, motherboard or any NUMBER of other components. It may also be as simple as a connected USB device so if anything is plugged into one of your computer's USB ports, unplug it before trying again. Quote

Solve : USB keyboard turns off durring XP Install?

Answer»

The system:

Dell System GX280
Intel p4 2.80Ghz
512Mb Ram
40 Gb hd

When attempting to install windows onto a formatted hd (formatted with another computer externally) I ran into a problem. The USB keyboard (no ps/2 ports) works fine in the BIOS up until I get to the screen in which it gives me the options to

1. To set up windows xp now, press enter.
2. To repair, press R
3. To quit setup, press F3

As soon as this screen displays, I can see the light above the number keys on my keyboard turn off and I can not press enter to install. I am stuck.

Things I have tried:

1. Checking every usb port, they all dont work for keyboard
2. checking the bios to see if usb is enabled, its enabled
3. checking if the usb has POWER by plugging in mouse wireless usb with light, it lights up
4. trying a different windows xp install DISK, I've tried 3, same result

And I repeat, I dont have a ps/2 port, which is how all the other posts Ive read on this manner were solved

Please help me!You SAID the USB keyboard has the light on it for the Nym Lock. So it has power.
Best guess is the keyboard is bad.
Wait -
Did you try the keyboard only, no mouse or other USB device?

Keyboard works perfect, Im using it to type this on my ALTERNATE computer. And like I said, it works perfect up until the screen described. And also, a wireless mouse I plugged in lit up but there is no cursor arrow on the screen so I cant tell whether it works properly or not.You might just need the BIOS update A08, which fixes:
1. Update Video Option ROM to version 1235.
2. Improve keyboard parser functionality.
3. Add Service Tag edit feature in Setup.
4. Improve detach support for USB keyboards.

I am running A04 now. Will try and post back whether it works or not.I normally wouldn't recommend BIOS updates, but in this case, it just might fix it.
You'll have to run BIOS update from DOS, which is a good thing.  Don't want Windows interfering with the keyboard, just when you need it most.Man that was a PAIN to find a usable 3.5" disk. I updated to a08 and the problem persists. Got anything other ideas? You'll have to search the Dell Forums.  You're not the only one with Optiplex USB keyboard problems.  I would try all the USB ports, one at a time, restarting computer after each one.

Solve : BIOS and boot issue because of disabled drive?

Answer»

Not sure of which part of the forum this belongs to, so I hope this is correct.  I've already searched the forums and can't seem to find my answer.

I own a Compaq (at least I think it's Compaq!) laptop, that is about 4-5 years old.  I'm AFRAID I can't say anymore than that except that a sticker on the bottom of the laptop says Model: 6120 and that I have a serial NUMBER.  The old owner took off all the labels.

It had a hard time SHUTTING down last night, and when I woke up in the morning, it was still in the same mode, "shutting down" WinXP, showing my background without anything else running.  I force shutdown it, by holding the POWER button.

But when I tried to turn it on, the computer wouldn't boot for some odd reason, and when I went into BIOS, I found the primary drive disabled.  I remember that on my desktop, I could enable the hard drive through BIOS, but for some odd reason this one didn't have that capability.

Because of this issue, I couldn't even reformat the drive, because it would tell me that I don't have ACCESS to the voume, or that it's non-existant.  I couldn't even reinstall the OS.  It still complained that it was unaccessible.

Is there anything I can do to re-enable this drive?  I would really appreciate the help!Do you have any system recovery disks? If you have a Win XP cd, you could also try the recovery console and run chkdsk once your logged into the admin account...

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]go back in the bios setup and chose setup defaults save and exit it.....if not it maybe thehard drive is sticking.......///or a corupted /damaged driver...what happens if you hold the f8 and chose the last good config....There's only one partition, and that's the inaccessible one.

Recovery console can't do anything since it can't access the disabled drive; chkdisk also couldn't find the disabled drive.

Went into BIOS before I posted the earlier entry and tried to revert to default settings, but still says disabled drive.

Last good configuration didn't work either...

The computer was working fine, and since it's a laptop, I haven't opened it to look at the inside or anything, so I doubt it was some wiring problem.  Is there any other way to re-enable the drive?

Thanks for helping, guys.you could try this......tap the underneath of the laptop. near the hard drive bay..just when it booting.......Hmm... that didn't seem to work either...

Does it look doomed?what is the make of the hard drive......bad ones are ibm travelstar.....or fugitsu........take the drive out.....and shove it back in sometimes that works.......

Solve : W2k Volume Control?

I have very irritating problem with W2k, every time i reboot the computer the volume control, which i check box disable, is turned on again. I have checked in my startup FOLDER and there is no mention of it there. Anyone got any ideas how to disable sound untill i choose?

TIA

Saul GreenbergRun msconfig & see if there is an entry in there?
Is this the windows little speaker thing or an icon placed there by a sound program? Thanks
I have run the msconfig, from START/Run command and get:
'Cannot find the file msconfig(or one of its components)' is there some other way to run it?
The Volume Control i talk about is accessed from Start/Accessories/Entertainment/volume Control and is abled/disabled by checkbox, Mute All.

TIA

A question, are you trying to stop the sounds or are you trying to get rid of the little icon in your taskbar? Quote

Where is this 'schemes setting'? there is nothing in my control panel and the only scheme ref i find is in display optiions but it refers to appearance of desktop.

Edit: Ahh OK i found it in Sounds and Multimedia in control panelTo find the scheme settings take the following steps:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Sound and Audio devices
5. Sounds TAB

Solve : Making progress?

Answer»

I have been battling my computer most of the week. Again mine is a WinXP System, and was restarting on its own constantly.

I tried a different POWER supply yesterday, Not the PROBLEM.  It did the same thing it did with its own PS.

So, I tried wiping the HD and just re-installing WinXP.  I would get so far a couple of TIMES and it would just do it's same re-starting or "blue" screen after I turned off the auto-re-start.

I finally chose the quick format versus the full one I guess and I got thru the complete process.  Was able to get online last night and everything for about 45 minutes with no interruptions.

The computer is lagging now, or it seems like it's dragging or is that my ISP connection?  Not sure at this point and wondering what I should do now?

My neighbor gave me a disk (floppy) that is a HD eraser, should I use it and have the WinXp properly format the HD instead of the quick way that I chose

OR just let the WinXp CD do it again but choose the other (not quick) and see if there's a difference?

Or is there another suggestion?

Thanks for your help in advance! You should use the Windows XP CD to fully format the Hard Disk Drive.unless you can trust your neighbour.......NEVER load any floppy disks.??.....the winxp will do it all......i suggest you run a spyware scan//and anti-virus scan......download adaware and run it......and use disk clean up.......

Solve : PC starts straight into safe mode choices, keeps looping, can't boot from cd?

Answer»

Hi, I have a PC with windows xp pro, upon starting it goes straight to the safe mode choices. I have tried all OPTIONS and it just loops back.
When I try to power off, it just STARTS up again. I have to pull out the actual power cord.
Have tried putting in the XP disc to start again and it still wont give me the option to boot from disc so I can reinstall.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Check your startup options in Task Manager...When the system first boots watch the screen for a message that says something like: To Enter Setup (or bios) press 'this key'

At that point, press the indicated key. Once in bios, change the boot ORDER so that the CD is the first device listed. Save your change and exit. You should now be ABLE to boot to the cd.I have tried this, and whenever I press any key, it gives 3 beeps and just loops back
It just will not let me do anything
Do you happen to use a wireless keyboard or mouse? Try using another PS/2 or USB keyboard or mouse before booting.

Solve : Batch print .rtf files as formatted?

Answer»

I have a number of .rtf files in a single directory that I'd like to batch print so that the CORRECT format of the document contained within the "rtf" coding ends up on the paper. For instance, if I double-click on each they open (using wordpad) and I can then P to print each with all of the formatting included. I've tried everything I can think of to GET them to be printed from a .bat file list, but they print out all of the formatting codes along with the non-formatted text - I would assume using Notepad or some such thing to print the "text" file. Is is it possible to launch an application and then send it top-level MENU commands? I've written batch files before, but never had to do this type of thing.

ThanksYou can batch print with Wordpad using the /P switch followed by the filename (quoted if it has any spaces, but good practice anyway).

Code: [Select]"C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe" /P "whatever.rtf"

Thanks so much - this WORKED perfectly (with the one exception it seems to need a lower case p INSTEAD of the upper case P) Quote from: bgeastman on March 12, 2011, 03:47:48 PM

it seems to need a lower case p instead of the upper case P)

I was surprised when I read that, because command line switches tend to be case insensitive, but I checked, and you are absolutely right. I see that when I tested it earlier on, I used a lower case p. I tried it in XP and also Windows 7. Oddly, Notepad works similarly but is equally happy with both /p and /P. I assumed Wordpad was the same, but evidently not. I note that many Web sources mistakenly show the switch for Wordpad with an uppercase P.

The harddrive is there in the bios in the main page, but in the security page there is a line called 'Built in HDD Password' with a space in brackets saying 'User only'
Does this indicate some SORT of password is required? If so could anyone please advise me where I might find such a thing?
