Solve : Non bootable CD - Cannot boot from CD?

Answer»

Hi all

I do not know how, but I have been able to format my ACER 1300 laptop with Windows XP because of a very bad Delphi.gen virus (buddies, you do not try to reclaim archives of pendrive infected if you do not know how; just format). I want to install Windows, the one that is, and having always placed in D:unit different Windows XP and 98SE CDs in perfect state (they work in my other PC), I have proven these 3 alternatives:

1. Starting from CD directly: " Non bootable CD in ATAPI CD; " Missing OS"

2. Starting from diskette with Ultimate Boot CD Loader (little program of solution to Non-Emulation Booting, typical ACER´s JOKE; Rafaelmbaez thanks): " Cannot boot from CD. Press any key to boot from HDD or ESCape to reboot" " Missing OS"

3. Starting from diskette with diskboot98 (it does not matter to me that it is not Windows XP, prefers although it; thanks sndrdk): " Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu" "1. Start to computer with CD-ROM support".
Finally, it opens A:\_ (MS-DOS). I follow FILE-OPEN and attempt to open AUTORUN.INF or INSTALAR.EXE. The CD starts, but nothing happens and stops.

Somebody please help me with any of this 3 options? What should I do on the 3rd A:\ > _?Find out the cd-rom drive letter and type X:\setup (Replace X with the actual CD-ROM drive letter.)

or

1. type X: and press enter (Replace X with the actual CD-ROM drive letter.)

2. type setup and press enter

I follow FILE-OPEN

In MS-DOS? Really?
Thank you very much for your quick answer. I did what you said, but nothing happened. Then I read something about deleting, creating and formatting partitions. It took me two days (9 hours formatting C:).

Things are better now, I followed yor advice (typing E: setup) and windows 98SE started installing, but it won´t INSTAL it totally because of this ERROR:
SU995035 Error Message During Windows 98 Setup

So now I will follow Microsoft instructions and see.

My idea is to install this Windows 98SE and then from there try to install the XP version. As I said, my two well-working XP CDs are read at the moment as "non boot CDs". What do you think?

Cheers!

PS: FILE-OPEN comes while using diskboot98 "Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu" - "1. Start computer with CD-ROM support"

Hi, this Microsoft SU995035 Error Message won´t work either. It says:

For Windows 98-based computers:
Restart your computer.
Press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On SELF Test (POST), and then choose command prompt only from the Startup menu.
At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:
cd\windows
ren setver.exe setver.old
Extract a new copy of the Setver.exe file from the Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM.

These commands are "no valid" for my PC; what should I do?? Thanks in advance.Windows98, Edition 1 are not bootable CD's.  Win98SE is bootable.
Get bootable CD from:  www.bootdisk.comThank you,

It is a W98SE CD, but don´t worry, finally I managed to launch the XP CD (pressing F10 while the system starts, amazing).

Anyway, forget W98. So I RUN my XP CD, it installs everything and then ask for resetting; it resets and... starts with the instalation again, as nothing happened before!!
I ran a chkdsk and it said "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems." If I look into fdisk now there are no partitions after I formatted C: the only one I had.

Any explanation?
Sounds like the hard drive is failing.

Hi, It wasn´t that bad at all. After a google search I found this program AEFDISK (thanks Micca) that helps formatting properly. And also found out that while installing Windows you must restart without any diskette or CD in, only when it asks for it. So I tried again... and this time it worked!! I have WXP again!!

Thanks for your advices, I hope this will help others.
