Solve : Backup file too large for CD?

Answer»

Hi,
The short of it is, Dell is out of solutions for me so they want me to reinstall Windows XP. To do this, I've backed up my files to a 7 gig backup file. The problem is, I only have a CD burner with one 700 Meg file.
Can I repartition the hard drive and save the backup file on one partition?
What does that MEAN, exactly?

The LONG of it is, my USB devices have stopped enumerating, or at least most of the time. Once in a while one of them will GET properly recognized in Device manager, but 99% of the time when I plug one in it shows up as Device unknown. I've tried deleting the USB root hubs, restoring the computer, mucking around in the registry, using USBInf, nothing works. Dell has given up on me. I chatted with a guy on Google groups who suggested running SCANNOW but that didn't turn anything up. I've flashed the BIOS, run diagnostics, reinstalled the software about 3 million times... I'm ready to reinstall XP now unless someone can give me better advice.zip the files and them burn em....to disk......you lose of usbs......check the ports are not loose....and the cables are ok...how many usb devices have you got?update the usb drivers.....options Quote

What exactly do you mean by enumerating?

You may need to install drivers for the USB devices you are attempting to connect.

Partitioning your HDD can not be done without losing the ability to access the files currently stored on your HDD.

hey--great forum. Two USEFUL answers in short time--Thank you.
How do I check the ports? That sounds promising.

The drivers are there. I can see them, I just can't make Windows recognize them consistently. For instance, when I plug in my Palm, I get the NEW hardware wizard telling me there is a new USB Device. That, as I understand it, is enumeration. Windows reads the device, if it's new it loads the wizard and retrieves the correct driver. If it's not new it just silently applies it. With a new palm device it should say Palm Handheld and look for the model. Because it applies the default USB device I can't update with the correct driver.load the palm software first then plug it in?forget the usb port theory.......Nah, I've tried that. There is definitely something screwy here - why would it occasionally recognize the correct device - this is true for Palm, Cannon, Ipod, Sony products. Is it really possible that the only way to fix something like this is a complete restore? Quote

Raptor - will you please explain this, I have used Partition Magic to partition in XP without subsequent file loss or access problems.

ThanksI never used the tool you described - I use either Fdisk or the Windows XP CD to repartition.

Thanks Raptor.  Agree with you re fdisk & the XP utility for partitioning.

Solve : XMS error in command?

Answer»

Hello, I USE Win XP SP2 installed over Win 98 SE.

When I run command I get this ERROR (translation):
ERROR: there is an extended memory MANAGER already installed. XMS controlled is not installed.

I checked autoexec.nt and config.nt and look ok.

What can I do?.

ThanksThis is when you try to run command.com? Is there some special reason why you don't want to run cmd.exe (The windows NT family command prompt - NT family being Windows NT, 2000, XP, Vista, 7)?

Try this: open Windows EXPLORER and navigate to the C:\Windows folder, highlight command.com, and right-click to bring up the properties. Choose compatibility mode and choose Win98.

Thanks Salmon Trout

I can´t change compatibility mode of
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\command.com

If I run cmd.exe instead tu use the soft I need I get this error:
C:\bookmaker5\en>mjbookmaker.exe -make doc.cfg

Solve : Problems installing Win 7 on a second hdd?

Answer»

I have a Compaq desktop model running XP Media Center.
A few days ago I got a second HDD installed with the intention of installing Win 7  on the newcomer. I had an experienced technician carry out the installation and he told me I should have no problem with the O/S installation. I didn't have the Win 7 disk to hand at the time but we decided I should be able to set this disk up without his help.
Now, the BIOS picks the new disk up and it shows up in the Disk MANAGEMENT Console giving the correct size and describing it as 'Unallocated.'
Using the XP wizard I was able to change the status to Dynamic and I managed to create a single new Volume (Partition?) but I can't go any further!
I followed an online tutorial I came across in a Google search but according to the writer, I should now be able to right click on the black bar and work off the context menu to format the disk and assign a drive letter and path.
This is not happening. I'm still getting the black bar and the RESTRICTED restricted context menu- same as was there when I originally opened the disk management panel.

Can anybody please help?
At present I have no way to access the new drive to assign a drive letter or to install Win 7.
After reading your post it is not clear why you can not install Windows 7 on the second drive. Preparation of the drive ought to be done my Windows 7. Why did you prep the drive in Windows XP?
And why did Why did you use Dynamic Drive?

Here is a suggestion.
Remove the drive that has XP on it.  Now try to install by booting the Windows 7 install disk. Does that work?

You don't need to do all that. Just boot to the windows 7 dvd and pick the drive that you want to install on. Make sure you don't pick your xp drive by mistake. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 12, 2011, 04:56:53 PM

The second HDD, the one I want to install Win 7 on, is blank and unformatted. So I can’t use Win 7 to do anything at the moment.
The new drive shows up in the BIOS and is also listed in DEVICE Manager but I can’t access it or assign a drive letter to it. I really don’t know much about Basic vs. Dynamic Drives but from what I have read, I thought Dynamic was the best form for newer operating SYSTEMS. I think that can be changed if needs be.
I could disconnect the C: drive with XP installed okay but I’d imagine that the computer won’t boot then as it fails to recognise the new disk.
You boot from the CD-ROM. Hit the space bar. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 13, 2011, 01:38:05 PM

Thanks very much. I think I got my problem solved!
I been thinking what you said about Dynamic vs. Basic might be the issue here so I changed the status to Basic as I noted that's how all the other drives were formatted. It seems to have done the trick as I was a
ble to assign a drive letter too it and it's showing up in My Computer.
Looks like I'll be able to go ahead and install Win7 at long last!
Thanks also to JJ3000; I'll be able to do as he says now.

Solve : Net wacher features?

Answer»

Windows 98 have netwacher FEATURES, which displays all the COMPUTERS (Users), which are logged on to that computer.

This can be retrieved from Control panel --> Add and remove program --> Windows components

Whether Windows XP also have that feature or not.

If yes then from where this feature can be retrieved.
Ashwani:

Windows XP Professional uses the Netstat utility to provide some of the same info that Net Watcher did.  To use the utility, click Start > Run... and type CMD and press Enter. In the command prompt window, type NETSTAT and press Enter.

You may SEE the different switches to use with netstat by typing NETSTAT /? in the command prompt window and pressing Enter.

Solve : Is there a way to temporarily disable a laptop from a network??

Answer»

I am trying to ground my daughter from her laptop, but don't want to physically take it. I am running windows 7, but I don't see where all the computers in the house are listed. I thought I could just remove the laptop. She has windows XP. I'm kind of having a hardtime figuring out the network (and windows 7 workgroup) but I eventually got them to connect and share our printer. 2 XP's and a Win 7. Any ideas? Here is some additional information you need to have. I mean about Windows, not your daughter. I could talk an hour about children and not say anything you don;t already know. Let's stick  just the technical stuff.
Rather than do something over the network, you should get direct physical control of her Laptop.
First of all, there is an account for the real administrator of a Windows XP system. It is called 'administrator' and ought to have a tough password. In XP  Home version you have to strut in safe mode to get it.

Presently in Windows XP and in other versions of Windows there is a thing called policy. ALSO, users can belong to different groups. This allows the chief administrator to degrade the privilege of a user by putting him/her into a limited group.
This is most readily done  directly on her laptop. It MUST be done by the  real administrator of the laptop, and he will create new user account with reduced  privileges or move a current user into a new group.. The default settings for Windows XP cannot PROVIDE very fine grain levels of privilege. You have to create a new policy for a group of users. A group can have just one user if need be.
For more information on how to do this you will need to look through articles found in the Microsoft knowledge base.
These articles are for Windows 7. There are similar features found in Windows XP. You can browse and search at http://support.microsoft.com/ and find more specific articles. Or http://windows.microsoft.com/ is another MS data base.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Why-use-a-standard-user-account-instead-of-an-administrator-account

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/How-do-I-change-the-behavior-of-User-Account-Control-by-using-Group-PolicyIf you want to ground her from using the internet on the laptop, you can reset the router to use Mac Filtering. Then you can add or remove the laptop when needed. She won't be able to change it from the laptop since it requires a wired connection.

http://netsecurity.about.com/od/quicktip1/qt/qtwifimacfilter.htm

This should not be your only security, WPA2 will keep the network safe and Mac Filtering will keep your daughter offline.
One thing you can do is disable the network adapter.
You can go to the Network Connections folder and disable the network adapter.
1. Click on Start and then Control Panel
2. Click on "Network Connections" or click on "Network and Internet Connections" and then click on "Network Connections" from there
3. Right click on the network adapter she connects from, and then click disable.

I recommend disabling both the Wireless and Wired adapter, so then she can't connect.
When you're ready to enable the network again on her laptop, go back to the network connections folder, right click on the disabled network adapters, and click "Enable".

Solve : Problems Resulting From Recent XP Updates?

Answer»

Yesterday I got a Windows Security shield-icon message saying updates were available.  I downloaded the 10 updates and express installed them.  Some were related to virus definitions and some were related to XP.  I permitted an automatic restart and...

1. When I clicked on my log in NAME I got a message saying my name wasn't recognized and any changes I made would not be saved.  Ctrl-alt-del would not TRIGGER the shut-down window.  I had to use the power button, and the computer did respond.

2. I restarted, was recognized, and saw my desktop background photo was gone and the only two icons on my desktop were the recycle bin and RealPlayer.

3. I walked away while the updates were finishing being installed, came back and saw my chosen screensaver had been replaced by the XP default screensaver.

4. My "recent documents" list was empty, and My Documents contained only empty pre-installed folders for pictures, music, and books.

5. The Works Calendar icon was still on the start menu, but the calendar wouldn't open.  Trying to stop the process I got the Program Not Responding message clicking for further details just said it was a hungup app.

5a. The projects I had created in Works Projects were deleted.  I was only currently using one, but the names of all the projects should have still been listed.

6. My Google Chrome icon was still in the start menu but it wouldn't launch.  No information as to why.

7. The butterfly icon for that version of explorer was gone.

8. The blue e for that version of exlorer still worked, but all my favorites associated with this version of explorer were gone.  The Bing toolbar is displaying the temperature for their default city, not mine.  The Yahoo toolbar, RoadRunner's browser partner, is correctly recognizing my location.

I found my documents in a folder named Stationery.  Formerly this folder had, at most, 1 document - a stationery template I had downloaded from from Windows.  I don't know know why my documents were moved there.  I have kept the folder where I found it, but renamed.

My screensaver, downloaded from a website long ago, was still in the screensaver list and I was able to choose it again without any problems.

Going through All Programs to get to the Windows Task Launcher, I see on the list a task one task I had scheduled for today.  I have 4 calendars in Works Calendar and have different information on each.  I should be getting a pop up reminder of upcoming events.  They're all still listed in the Task Launcher if I click on the appropriate date on the calendar in the Task Launcher, but the Task Launcher can't open the Works Calendar (by clicking a button on the screen) either.  It still gets hung up.

I don't know if my Projects were moved anywhere, but fortunately I didn't have anything in them I can't easily re-create.

If these updates wiped information, rearranged information, and reset settings, why does it still have the Google Chrome icon listed in the start menu?  It didn't exist when I first got XP.

I'm posting this for two reasons - to ask if anyone else got these problems from the updates, and to ask for HELP in getting my calendar open.

none of your settings were wiped. Your user profile was somehow corrupted and now it is using a default (temporary) profile.

Some of your stuff still appears (google chrome icon) because some programs install icons on the default account; the default account is what Windows copies whenever it makes a new account, including temporary ones it uses when a STANDARD profile fails to load.

This has only happened to me once (it had nothing to do with XP automatic updates, since I always have those entirely disabled) and I fixed it relatively easily; I logged out from the temporary profile and logged in as the administrator- this required that I use the "standard" login dialog (as opposed to the welcome screen) since one of the first things I do with XP is disable the welcome screen, that wasn't a problem. You can get to the standard login dialog from the welcome screen by pressing Control+Alt+Delete twice at the welcome screen. Once logged in as the administrator, I created a new account, which of course resulted in an appropriate new folder showing in C:\Documents And Settings.

I copied the entire folder contents of my old "corrupted" profile whose folder was still in C:\Documents And Settings) to the "new" folder of the account I had just created, replacing it's contents entirely. I then logged out and logged into the "new" profile and all was well again. Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 10, 2011, 06:35:31 PM

If I were using a temporary profile I don't think I'd have been able to find my files.  I don't know how to find the history of what was INCLUDED in the 10 downloads, but things have certainly been rearranged for me.

My only concern is how to open the calendar.  If I were using a temporary profile, wouldn't a blank calendar be presented?  I see my appointments using the Task Manager, but the calendar doesn't open.

Solve : Overheat shutdown. Now, no display after post and splash. HD running.?

Answer»

Gateway ML-3109 laptop.  XP Pro.  Sitting on  angled laptop support on my desk.  I was running full/thorough scan in Ad-Aware or AVG (don't recall)...and since this computer is a dog anyway, the scan had gone over the 1-hour mark and then then the comp shut down.  It definitely was hot..  Only one prior overheat incident 9 months ago when we were using it on a pillow :-)  After overheat, I put it on end to cool for about an hour.  Restarted and  now I get the post, splash logo, log-on music, and then no more display.  HD still going.  It's as if everything is 'normal' except that the display is not, uh, displaying..  Safe mode, debugging, recovery center, bootable XP disc,  all F8 options, etc...all yield the same result.  I'm REEEALLY lost on this one, guys.  Thx.  Kevin.Crap!  Noone...NOONE has anything to say about this???   Must be a brand new/unique problem.  Geesh! Quote from: Funkykev on February 11, 2011, 03:19:42 AM

Crap!  Noone...NOONE has anything to say about this???   Must be a brand new/unique problem.  Geesh!

Posting like that is NOT RECOMMENDED. Nor is bumping generally.
Didn't actually think of that.  Was genuinely surprised I got no hits/asdvice as I always had in the past without fail.  Not intended, honest.  Flag 'em, burn 'em, delete 'em. It's all OK.  Just so you know it wasn't intentional.  But now I DO SEE your point as it top-lists the posting.
I have the DEATH sentence on 12 systems!!! (but not really.)  Sorry.  KL.
OK, what is the monitor displaying exactly, you say it does not display, but you see the splash logo and the Safe Mode options etc.

How do you KNOW the computer was hot? Any proof? Is your computer set-up to shut down after an hour if not in use.

Also, if it was an overheat,  i wouldn't advise putting it on end, there is no need, just turn it off for an hour.      GOOD NEWS!!!  AVG-Free DID IT!!!  Skip to bottom if you like!!!
-
Recap and answers and I JUST NOTICED A FEW THINGS: Comp shut down after being on for 2 hours...the last hour of which it was running a thorough scan in AVG when it simply shut off/lost power.  I unplugged it and propped it on end, vent pointing up, with maximum air circulation,  LEFT it there an hour or so.  It FELT extremely dad-gum hot!  Just like it did 9-months prior when using it on a pillow and overheated and shut-off.  Comp is not set up to shut-off, sleep, or hibernate.  It can actually only be on or off (another problem).  So, after the shut-off (not shut-down) and cool down I rebooted an it progresses normally: The quick GateWay boot option screen...then the Win XP splash and progress bar and then to black...and then the Win opening jingle and that's it.  Never see anything else.  HD continues to do it's thing and that's it.   All boot options accessible when I hit F8.  Anything it does in a DOS screen I can see.  CHKDSK /p found 1 or more errors.  Any loading/running of windows in any form still results in the black screen at the same point.
-
New Info:  1)  I can noticeably affect the brightness of the screen...so it's not dead/powerless.  2)  SAFE MODE w/ Cmd Prompt option shows a hang on:  ...\system32\DRIVERS\AVGIDSEH.Sys
-
-Holy WOW!!!  As I'm doing this last section in real time, it turns out AVG effed me.  Gotta go look at the fix.  Sorry so long to look at the Safe Mode w/ Cmd Prompt info.  Heh-heh, my idiot post could have some use...in a roundabout way, hopefully.  Thanks dudes.  Let YA know unless you kick me out :-)
-
Whoops.  Here's the link to what I just found on a CNET forum:  http://tinyurl.com/48vgyk8

And note that the AVG staff actually gets in on this conversation.  NICE!!!  Ironically, this is like the exterminator giving you bugs!!!!

Hi,

Since your pc is a laptop you could clean it up from dust, usually laptops should be clean up from dust inside from time to time, that could be the cause of your restarts.

I have had more or less the same problem but I ignored it at my cost. One day it finally refused to start and a repair technician told me the motherboard was fried- it was a bin job. He put it down to insufficient ventilation; partly due to placing it on my lap a lot of the time and failing to use the vacuum cleaner on the air vents periodically.Your best BET, funkykev, would be to keep the laptop on a hard surface at all times so as to allow air to circulate freely underneath and to attempt to suck the built up dust that accumulates on the interior parts.
At the same time I'd start thinking about making back up copies of your critical data as a motherboard failure could be on the way.New question & more info.  None of AVG's rescue options (cd/usb) are working out.  I've even tried another boot UTIL using a bootable ISO disc as I tried with AVG's solution.  QUESTION IS:  let's assume only my video drivers got effed up somehow...can I create a bootable disc to reload said driver files?  Also, I'm not sure what can be converted to ISO, if even ISO is the only bootable format for XP.  After this, I'm done...it's either the sledge-hammer, the blow-torch, or a reinstall.  I preferr the first two!  Waaay more fun.  Awww, crap, geuss I still have to fix the hang on the AVG file.  And I can't any kind of useful  "C" prompt that will let me rename or delete or anything.  Source disc, HERE I COME!!! Solve : Hard drive repeatedly activates?

Answer»

HP, XP Pro 3, WE SATA HARD drive
The hard drivemakes an annoying sound, and the light flashes, as if it is activating regularly about once per second.  This will go on for hours and then stop for about 1 to 2 minutes then start again.  This has been happening for about 4 or 5 days.  I have refaged recently, but that was about three weeks before this problem started.  Any ideas?  Thanks.Did this just start happening? Open task manager to the processes tab and sort on the cpu column. Is something using the cycles?

If Hard Disk is Polled constantly, try disabling Auto Play:

start / run / regedit
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
If there is an entry of AutoRun or AutoPlay, double click and set the value to 0 (zero)I tried your suggestion and the problem still exists.  The problem started abou 4 or 5 days ago.I can't see anything using the CPU in Task manager. Is indexing service turned on ? ?
What about your protection apps....are they live ? ?If you disabled autoplay (and rebooted afterward) and if it's not indexing (as Patio asks), then SOMETHING has to be using the cpu in task manager - whether it's your av, some other process in task scheduler, or even if it's malware - something has to be running if the hd is active.I have done everything suggested.  The indexing service is not running and my Norton protection is running.  I have tried turning Norton off to no avail; rebooting after every change.  The only thing that runs in Task Manager is System Idle Process in the upper nineties; eveything else is at zero.  On the Performance tab the CPU SPIKES at 8 to 9 percent every 20 to 30 seconds, but not in sync with the problem.  I have not done anything with the computer except delete a bunch of e-mail about three weeks ago and defraged right afterwards.  This computer has had hard boots several times since we had rolling blackouts here during the cold weather, but the computer is on a working UPS so the blackouts should have no effect. Then you may have a HDD ready to go South and cannot "park" the heads...
DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from the drive manuf. site...

Run the long test.If the cpu spikes every 30 seconds, so does a process. Do as I suggested above - sort the Task Manager Processes tab on the cpu column with highest usage at the top. When the cpu spikes, which process is causing it?The only process that changes is the System Idle Process, but the changes are not in sync with the small spikes.  The reading stays at 99 mostly going as low as 88 on seldom instances.  It could be that I'm about to lose the hard drive as patio suggested.  I'll go to Western's website to download the testing software.  I'll LET you know after I've done it it.  It will not be today since I have to leave soon.If the system idle process goes down, another process HAS to go up.Another thing to try. Go into Disk Maneger and ty to remove that  the drive LETTER. Then reboot.

You would expect that if then drive is not mounted there can be no access to it. But if it keeps doing the same as before, it is a warning sign.

Solve : Can't boot Windows XP?

Answer»

I get to the WINDOWS logo, but then can't log in. I get error msg 0x800700cl-problem checking the license for this COMPUTER. I cannot log into Safe Mode. I have Norton ANTIVIRUS installed. I BOOTED from the Windows Cd & ran chkdsk /r which said it fixed errors, but I still can't get past the Windows logo. Any thing else I can try? This is a valid, retail version of XP, correct?

What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?Yes, it's the original/valid cd. My kids get on there & play games etc., that is any changes that would be made. I FREQUENTLY scan & look for any updates as best as I can. The last few times I could log in, the screen would change to vertical lines & i would lose what I was working on. I'm not familiar with doing major fixes, but I'm willing to try!

Solve : task bar double sized?

Answer»

I have a problem in that I some how made the task bar double the normal size. I know that there should be 3 dividers on the task bar. 1 to the right of the Start button, 1 to the left of the quick launch icons and 1 by windows search desktop. Instead I only have two. I somehow clicked SOMETHING by the Start button and all of a sudden the Task bar doubled in size along with the System Tray. Also you can no longer move the arrow on the System Tray to show the Icons. I know I can do A system Restore to Sunday but I would prefer to find out what I did so if it happens again I can fix it. Attached is a screenshot showing what it looks like and my tool bar settings?
Also here is my system info

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]You pulled quick launch to the left, which gives you a double Decker.
Move the quick launch to the right OR drag it to the desktop. Did you know you can put Quick Launch on the desktop?

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Tried that all results negative (it doesn't work) what you get it a four sided arrow.. one pointing up and down the other pointing left and right combined together. tool bar in properties is uncheckedJust keep trying. If you get the narrow it means you can do it.
Now I "made it worse" I no longer have windows search bar I go to properties and try and click on it to put it there nothing happens it won't accept the check mark Can you CLOSE the toolbars if so do.

Once you have the toolbars off you can resize the taskbar by moving the pointer to the bottom where it changes to one that points north and south.

Hold the primary mouse button down and adjust to the size you want it to be.  Release the mouse button and with the secondary mouse button click the taskbar and select Lock the Taskbar.
You need to toggle between locking and unlocking the Taskbar and unchecking Quick launch or remove from the Taskbar and no applications are open or present(collapse)while adjusting the size. I previously had problems on adjusting this and it worked for me. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 14, 2011, 08:20:55 PM

What?  The left side is the default.

bac0926,
If you did what Geek said, you need to pull the Quick Launch back to the left where it was; if you're lucky, this might bring back your search bar.  You then need to grab that little line to the left of the Quick Launch icons and drag it DOWN.  The taskbar doubled in size because the Quick Launch was pulled UP (or the rest of it was pulled down) into a separate row.Sorry for any confusion I started.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]1 last thing the only way i could single size it was (before restore) was to have no open windows and delete all icons and remove search bar. As soon as I added anything back it double sized again.
Thx

Solve : IE Script Error: Library Not Registered?

Answer»

System:
     Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
     Version 2002 Service Pack 3

Computer:
AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 5600+
     2.91 GHz, 3.00 GB RAM

This computer is throwing a temper tantrum, it's about 5 years old and over all I'm expecting things to start going. I have a new hard drive on the way with Windows 7 as well as 4 more Gigs of RAM. With a culmination of symptoms that have been fixed along the way I am now at one I'm not sure how to fix.

My user profile became corrupted and I made a new one. I uninstalled EVERYTHING from the old profile and what was corrupted beyond that I used Revo Uninstaller to get ride of. When the computer was built by a friend of mine I was not given an XP disk so every fix I've done has been to avoid reformatting till the new OS could get here.

Now in the process of reinstalling everything I am running into a script error.

An error has occurred in the script on this page.

Line:       9
Char:      4978
Error:      Library Not Registered.
Code:      0
URL:        http://launcher.worldofwarcraft.com/2.0/CT/index.xml?version=4.0.6.13623&lovale=en-US&type=CL

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page.

First off I don't use IE I use Mozilla so that isn't an issue.

I've gone into IE and made sure all the options were set to default, that "disable script bugging IE and Other" were both checked and "display notification" was unchecked. After that I ran Dial_a_fix the first time I received THREE errors all of which were about the OLE, since those hadn't been checked yet, I wrote them down and restarted my computer. Ran Dial_a_Fix again and came up with no errors. I have run Malwarebytes and Spybot all of which has come up clean.

So what is left that could be causing this? Quote

First off I don't use IE I use Mozilla so that isn't an issue.
Then just removed IE via add/remove programs and see if the problem goes away. Or download and reinstall IE.Thank you Jason2074 for replying with a suggestion.

Now for an update. I haven't posted in 3 days because one no one replied but also because I had a new hard drive and Windows 7 64 bit arrive. So my computer has a clean install of a new OS, a brand new hard drive, and upgraded from 4 to 8 gigs of RAM, the old hard drive has been formatted and is running as a slave.

The new hard drive and OS make this issues obsolete, although I wish I had found at LEAST a reason as to why it was HAPPENING. Everything I did read on the subject led to an add on problem in IE but since I have had IE TURNED off in the windows settings for years I don't see how that was the actual issue. Although I didn't think about reinstalling it, since I never used it, it never crossed my mind.

Thanks to every who took the time to read my post and at least give it some thought. I'm going to mark it as solved. Congrats on the upgrade !

Restart computer and keep tapping F8 key until many appears, listing Safe Mode as one of the options.
Using keyboard arrow keys select Safe Mode.Thank you so muchhhhhhhhh Broniwhen i shutdown to safemode it is automatically off...but when it is not safemode, windows shutting down is not working, the monitor always onVery well.
It looks like in normal mode something hangs up, preventing your computer from shutting down.

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click DISABLE all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in HIDE all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use DIFFERENT firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Try to shut it down now.

Solve : Windows Media Player and Media Library?

Can someone tell me what file stores the Windows Media Player Media LIBRARY Playlists in?
I've ran a bunch of SEARCHES, and checked the registry and can't find it anywhere.

When you open a media file, it automatically ADDS itself to the Media Library, so I figure there must be a file that holds this information in it.

Thanks. If you mean MRUs (Most Recently Used), I think they're in the registry. Are you just TRYING to delete them?
If so, try with http://www.ccleaner.com or EasyCleaner by ToniArts.Windows Antispyware can ALSO clean the WMP playlist for you.

Have you tried a discrete keyboard to see if you get the same symptoms?

You might also check in Control PANEL for any keyboard properties settings, such as character repeat SPEED, etc.

There's also the possibility that the keyboard is dirty and/or sticky - you might check out the HP website for your MACHINE's service manual, see what procedures are available for taking the keyboard off and cleaning it.

Solve : black screen when boots up?

Answer»

I have a Dell inspiron 1520 , there is some issue while it boots up . when it boots up , I saw dell logo while BOOTING up , however after the logo it SHOWS black screen , and if we run it into safe mode , it gives all the safe mode options , when I load anything in safe mode , again black screen

I have checked the rams , taken out and reinserted it , same issue

I think I need to format the computer, will this be good ?You may need to hook an external monitor to check the problem. Depending on the availability of RAM module on your computer, you could used just one while booting to test the issue. That's similar to a problem I acquired when installing IE8. The problem went away when I uninstalled IE8. (2004 XP)Hmm.......

You may be right. But don't format the whole drive.
Try to install XP in another drive [instead of the default C:, try D: or E:]
But I must warn you - ALL the DATA STORED in the drive you install the new patch of XP will be LOST.

Did you set the jumper correctly on the new hard drive?  Is the new hard drive jumpered as a slave and the old hard drive jumpered as the master?

Did you install Windows XP Home Edition from the Windows XP Professional desktop, or did you just boot the computer with the installation CD?

Have you tried booting to Safe Mode with Windows XP Home?  It may be that the display settings are wrong (my GUESS based on the error message you saw).  When you choose XP Home from the operating system menu, immediately begin pressing the F8 key once every second until the boot menu appears, then choose Safe Mode.  If you get to the Windows XP Home desktop, open the Display applet in the Control Panel, click the Settings tab, and move the Screen Resolution slider to the left to something like 800 by 600 pixels.

If you are able to boot normally to Windows XP Home after this, but some devices are not working properly (check the Device Manager), you may still be able to download device drivers from the computer or motherboard manufacturer, or use the drivers from the System Restoration CD.

good afternoon people, can someone please help with this error msg i find when i boot my pc: error loading c:\WINDOWS\ecueci.dll.

thank uI've never seen that FILE name before, but I'm GUESSING you started getting that message shortly after installing some software. You can download & run Startup Control Panel and uncheck any app that looks like it may be related to that message. Then reboot and see what happens.

http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtmlThe spelling must be wrong as there is no .dll by the name...Thank you i will go try it just now.....and Patio i did spell it right. Then it probably is MALWARE since it's not a registered KNOWN dll...

Solve : People, I NEED HELP!?

Answer»

Hi all,  a week ago, I had just finished loading close to 4000 JPEGs into my Sony Vaio Media Center VCG-RC210G w/XP MCE (w/RAID drives).  Before I backed it up I wanted to clean some garbage out & I had downloaded a trial version of AVG Anti-virus.  I didn't like it so I clicked it's uninstall button.  The Uninstall wizard came up & when it finished, my screen lost it's desktop & icons, blinked blue once & then went black with a white cursor in the upper left corner of the screen.  I tried booting in Safe Mode & the first time I did it, I got the boot screen & SELECTED Safe Mode.  Instant black screen with white cursor.  Now the F8 key does not work  nor does the rest of the keyboard.  The XP recovery disks were not included with my computer.  Is there ANY way that I can get my images, documents & e-mail off this machine before I have to re-install XP (and no, I no longer have the JPEG backup SD card, our dog picked it up & bit two holes through it, it's been CHECKED - worthless)??

Thanks for any advice.

BuddyleeHey ,

I would tell you to do System Restore but now your keyboard is not working, nut what  i can advice you to do is to use Hirens and Ghost back up your info and Format the HDD or u can make it a slave in another PC and copy the Data into the Primary hdd and format, hope this works.POWER off the system unplug the keyboard then replug it back in then power back on and see if youy get a responce form the keyboard.  Alot of time it is just a loose connection.

Might try a DIFFERENT keyboard. To get the pictures off the hard drive, you could start up a Linux Operating System and use it to copy the pictures to a USB, then reinstall Windows.

Download the ISO from here, and burn it to a CD. Then insert the CD into the disk drive at startup like you would for Windows XP installation. Wait for the OS to load, and then it "Try Ubuntu".

From there, go to Places -> Computer, and open up your Hard Drive. Browser to the location your photos are (Probably "Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Pictures") and copy then to a USB device.

Hope this helps

Solve : modems and ports?

Answer»

(Running windows xp sp2, 2 gig processor, 352 RAM)
i just want to know, shouldn't the port that my modem says
it's using be listed under ports in the device manager? my modem says it's using com3, but the only ports listed in the
device mgr are LPT1 and COM1. it won't detect a dial tone. i've uninstalled, reinstalled, tried different modems, updated
drivers, everything i can think of, still only have LPT1 and COM1 and no dial tone detected in every instance. i've queried the modem, comes out fine every time. tried changing the modem to COM1, made no difference so i changed it back to it's default (COM3 for one of the modems, COM4 for the other one). COM ports 3 & 4  are both  listed under ports in the printers and faxes\print server properties window under ports. If ANYBODY out there can help i'd sure appreciate it.

dl65  you are correct don......as usual not enough info on how the user has setup the cables  or extension lan lead etc....XPEER here again
I think i mentioned that I had queried the modem in my FIRST post so obviously I know about it showing up in the device manager cause I don't know any other way to query it (but I'm sure there probably are ways. As far as the other things go you guys mentioned, I just have 1 phone line, 1 phone, and 2 computers hooked up here, nothing fancy. I made the first post from my old win98 computer which is on the same line ( on past the XP), so obviously the problem's not with the phone line. Looking at how my 98's set-up I found the same thing as far as which port the modem was using and that same port not showing up under the ports in device manager. Difference is, it works. I did find another modem, put it in, windows installed it, it worked, and now I'm posting this reply from my XP. I know the other modems are good modems too, but for some reason they didn't work and this one did. Who knows. Sorry to bother you guys but I've been fighting this for awhile now and was getting PRETTY frustrated. Thanx muchly for trying to help though. I'm sure I'll need help again someday.
THANX AGAIN!

Are you certain that it is not I do not work so well for AVG?

AVG SEEMS to me like a very good anti-virus scanner. I install it on every machine I work with.

Why can it not perform as you would like it to? What do you expect of it?What are you trying to do that AVG or the other PROGRAM can not? Also, try looking on Download.com  ... There's TONS there. Most all virus scanners work the same, so long as they are updated... Find one that you like...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Gabriel:

If your system is already infected with a computer virus, it may prevent an anti-virus program from PROPERLY installing.  Your best option, then, may be to download and run a virus removal tool made specifically for that virus.

Is your system infected now?  If so, what is the name of the virus, Trojan Horse, or Worm?  If you give us the name we may give you the link to a site where the removal tool may be downloaded.

thank you!!

Eeah?  What's that?  Can't hear as well as i used to, missy!  Did you say your PC has Windows 98 or that new fangled XP installed?

whoops sorry! hehe, yeah I have XP home editionSince you are using Windows XP, you may wish to try the following:

1. Load last working configuration

I. Before Windows loads press F8
II. Selectlast known working configuration from the list

2. Windows  Update

I. Load Windows Update
-- Start -> Windows Update
II. See if there is an update for your audio card driver under the Select OPTIONAL hardware updatestab.

If neither of these two options work, can you tell us what you have done before the PROBLEM occured?TheSilent:

OK i HEARD ya' that time!

Windows XP has the new feature which hides inactive icons in the system tray to save space.  If there is a white less-than sign (<) next to the System Tray, then click on it and see if the volume icon appears.

If it does not, click Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices.  In Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, make sure the Place Volume Icon in the Taskbar is CHECKED and click OK.

If that doesn't cure it, LET us know and one of us will prescribe something else.

Solve : Computer froze, now won't start.?

Answer»

I moved an older (about 5 years) computer from one room in the house to another.  It hooked up ok and ran fine.  It is connected to a laptop via a wireless router.  I checked the laptop to make sure it still got the internet.  Both computers were now working fine.

Within the hour I noticed that the old computer was frozen.  It wouln't shut down so I hit ctrl-alt-del twice to get it to reboot.

Now the old computer tries to start up on but after about a second it is almost like a "ghost" (yeah, I know) presses the reset button.  No screen info is ever SHOWN, no beeps come from the computer like when it used to start up.

The computer was put together by a family friend, its running WIN98 SE and has a AMD processor if that makes any difference.

Thanks for any help/ideas in advance.

-SDtravelerdisconnect the usb router........does it boot now....Router disconnected....still doesnt work.

It wasn't a USB connection if that makes a diiference, it was a network CABLE.

The set up goes like this:

cable line --> cable modem --> wireless router --> broken computer

I've tried disconnecting everything from the computer, including keyboard, mouse, printer, and monitor.  Still having same problem.

Internet still working on the laptop via wireless connection even though the broken computer is currently unplugged.

-Cheerspower supply unit kaput?......check the mains plug//fuses...and extension lead if applicable....I don't know exactly what I am looking for but connections seem clean and solid.

An inteseting clue came up though, when I pulled the supply to the hard drive I decided turn the computer on.  The computer stayed on this TIME, checked the cd and the floppy drive, and sat there (Im assuming cause the hard drive has the start up files)  No info ever came on the screen.I would take a look inside the cabinet and re-seat your cards and RAM modules. Last time I moved a computer from one room to another the sound card fell out of its slot due to there being no retaining screw.

Good suggestions by Merlin and Mac as always.

One thing i like to do in situations like this is use the process of elimination.  To rule out the network configuration or hardware as the cause of the problem, power off the old computer, disconnect the it from the router, and power it up.  Use it for some time to see if it locks up, still.  If it does, the network connection is not the cause and we need to tell you what to do next to determine what is the cause.  If it doesn't lock up, then the network software or hardware may be the culprit.

Let us know how it goes so we may tell you what to do next.

I just pushed herd on all the cards & connections and somehow It fixed itself.  Thanks to both of you for all your help.

Glad to hear you got it fixed. If you have a problem later, take the cards out of the mainboard one by one and put them back in again. Just this action alone can clean up the electrical contact face between the connectors on the card and those in the SLOTS on the mainboard.

Just be CAREFUL to take proper anti-static precautions. Just unplug all mains power and, holding the metal cabinet with the left hand press the power button in and hold it down for a few seconds. You can sometimes hear the static charge across the board dissipate.

Then it should be safe to handle components.

Solve : How to re activate DOS commands in Win XP SP3?

Answer»

hey,

one PROGRAM disabled all my DOS commands to be interpreted.

My system is Win XP SP3.

I can get into DOS mode via Win Run> cmd, but cannot execute any commands; when trying the reply always:

" the command, typed in"  is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

I guess the program might have updated a key in the Registry.

Any solution?

Thanks, bill
What is your problem?
Run > CMD  works just fine. Are you nuts?

READ my Question!

I can get to DOS cmd prompt but cannot execute any DOS commands.
As SAID in my Q, it returns a message ....................(not recognized as any int/ ext/ batch .... command)Do this:
Get into the DOS prompt. Type DIR and hit enter. What happens?

Are you nuts?

Way to get lots of answers - NOT.
Thank you guys for the good link to fix.

The winner was who gave me the URL and found that the "PATH" in system variables was CORRUPTED by new installation.

The DOS interpreter needs the path to be correctly set to "PATH:C:\Windows\System32\" OR PATH:%system%\system32

Many thanks again.

Cheers,  bill

You're very welcome
