Solve : Deleted volume driver on accident! please help!!?

Answer»

This is a very huge problem that i created about a couple months ago. I deleted my volume driver on accident. I think i accidently deleted important audio files for the sound driver to work. I've tried reinstalling the audio driver but i couldn't get it to work!. when i do it and restart my computer it popps up blue screen and says something about me not installing the program correctly, or that it is a corrupted audio driver. I really really need help with this, I've tried system restoring, and just do not know what to do anymore! i really need your help please! I think my audio driver is Realtek AC'97 Audio, That's what it says to intall when i search for missing drivers. Also my computer system information is, Microsoft Windows XP version 2002 SP3.Look in device manager. Any errors? Quote from: Allan on January 22, 2011, 07:20:44 AM

You have to find out what motherboard you have. The Microsoft tools might not correctly identify it.
Here is a program that does and extreme probe of your system and tells lists of things about it. Free for personal use.

The best way to speed that old computer up would be to add more RAM.Thank's JJ, Q1answer is very helpful. Q2, raid 0 will give me faster access speed i read some where. I have 16 channel mackie fire wire mixer board for live band and the latency was too high so the need for speed.Well you can use those two drives in a RAID 0 if you like, but it's ALWAYS best to use drives of the same type in RAID. Also, with RAID 0 the capacity of your array will be the size of the smallest drive multiplied by the number of drives. So in your case, you will be wasting 500gb. Using them as storage drives will not speed up the computer. The best way to speed up your computer would be to add more RAM. Quote from: cbil on January 27, 2011, 11:09:31 AM

As I know it, RAID will never give you faster access speeds.  That's not what it was designed for. Quote from: rthompson80819 on January 27, 2011, 11:36:03 AM
As I know it, RAID will never give you faster access speeds.  That's not what it was designed for.

RAID 0 is disk striping. It spreads the data between the drives in the arrray. For example if you save a small microsoft word file it will be split into multiple pieces. Half will go on one drive the other half on the other drive. The only advantage of RAID 0 is faster read/write speed. RAID 0 is also USED in some gaming systems where performance is desired and data integrity is not very important. However, real-world tests with games have shown that RAID-0 performance gains are minimal, although some desktop applications will benefit.[1][2] Another article examined these claims and concludes: "Striping does not always increase performance (in certain situations it will actually be slower than a non-RAID setup), but in most situations it will yield a significant improvement in performance." [3]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_RAID_levelsCorrect me if I'm wrong, JJ, but isn't any RAID system slower (not than a HUMAN could tell the difference) than a non RAID system or single HD?Thank's rt for the help.I have read that Raid 0 reads both drives at once for faster access,Raid 1 will mirror 2 drives for redundancy  so if one fails the other drive has all information still on it. Raid 10 is a combination of 1and 2.For Raid 10 you need 3 drives

Thank's everyone for your quick help. I will use the 1tb hd for file storage. When i install the ssd in win7 will the 1tb drive be called the second drive? If you do it properly...Yes.Thank's Patio,i will take my time and pay attention to win 7 instruction when i install it. Solve : very slow file-new-folder dropdown?

Answer»

I am running XP SP2 and am having more & more PROBLES with having to WAIT to be able to make a new folder. I have run tweakui and have set folder customization to remeber 3000 folders which still does not SPEED thing up - the lag after clicking file, then new is about 10 seconds or more.

Also, does anyone know how to put the make new folder command on the menu bar?So if you right click on your desktop & select 'new folder' it takes 10 seconds to create it?
For me it's instant.
I just had a re-read
If I go to file>new>folder that is also instant.
Check your cpu usage in task manager>performance?Good idea, but I checked and the cpu usage never goes above 27% during the 10 seconds or so before the rest of the drop down appears. Any other ideas? Any way I can make this a menu bar command - it is non-standard? Quote

Any way I can make this a menu bar command - it is non-standard?

I'm not sure what you mean by this.
I think for now you should concentrate on getting it to OPEN faster & worry about 'menu bar ?' later.
Run disk cleanup & do defrag, then come back.
Disk cleanup takes forever, you may WANT to download and run ccleaner, it will be much faster. (Note the double 'c' in ccleaner)

Solve : .NET Framework 3.5 won't install?

Answer»

I am running an old Compaq Presario 6000 with a 1.4 Ghz Celeron processor and 512 Mb PC133 (maxed out) and onboard sound and graphics. I have all drivers updated to the latest drivers this dinosaur can run. I have Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall guarding the door. Other than that all I have installed is Office 2002 (Word, Power Point, Excel) my printer (Canon JX210P), Motorola Phone Tools , Rainlendar, Firefox and Thunderbird. I have tried letting Net Framework 3.5 SP1 via Automatic Update AND using Tools>Windows Update. Both approaches fail. Once installation initialization is finished it fails to install. Do you have .net framework 3.0 installed? .net framework versions are not cumulative - they require the earlier version to be installed. For some odd reason, after several FAILED attempts at installing it DECIDED to go ahead and install on a shutdown........ at the Log off/Shutdown/Restart it said there were updates ready to be installed Do Not Turn Off Computer It Will Shut Down Automatically. While shutting down it installed. Thnkgs that make you go "Hmmmmmmm".This tells me you interrupted the original install/// Quote from: Allan on January 27, 2011, 01:54:09 PM

Do you have .net framework 3.0 installed? .net framework versions are not cumulative - they require the earlier version to be installed.

each version of the .net framework is required to run applications written to that framework. you can run a .NET 2.0 application only if you have .NET 2.0 installed; having 3.5 or 3.0 won't work, and you don't need 1.1 installed (it doesn't require the earlier version). Same goes for later versions; you can run a .NET 3.5 compiled application only if you have .NET framework 3.5 installed; it won't run if you only have .NET 4 and/or .NET 2.0 installed.

it isn't no MUCH that they aren't cumulative (the functionality of a the 1.1 framework in the 3.5 framework, for example) insomuch as they are simply regarded as different products; each "version" of the .NET framework is updated individually; you can update your 1.1 framework install, then update your 3.5 framework install, and they will both remain installed. Vista comes preinstalled with .NET 3.0, Windows 7 comes preinstalled with .NET 3.5; however, if you want to or need to run applications written for versions 1.1 or 2.0 or any earlier (or later, as 4.0 has also been released) framework, you will need to install that version as well.

Solve : Can't Install router without losing connection?

Answer»

I'm going insane, everytime I fix a problem with my computer a new one comes up.

I have a Belkin 802.11g router, but whenever I try to connect it I lose my internet connection. The Internet is local area connection 2 USING an Arris Touchstone modem, and my router's is local area connection 6 using a broadcom integrated controller. I think the main problem is that the manual says to take the cord CONNECTING the modem to the computer, unplug it from the computer, and plug it into the router. Problem is, my modem is connected to my computer through USB, and there's no USB port on my router, only a phone jack. I should also mention that I got my router a while ago along with a wireless PCI card, and everything installed fine. Then I somehow f'ed up my card, and I haven't been able to fix it until very recently. I guess sometime between the card f'ing up and me fixing it, my router f'ed up. I would really appreciate any help.Does your computer have a NIC? NIC to router with cat5, router to modem with cat5, modem to phone jack.Is the Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller an NIC?OKAY, I tried that and I'm getting the same problem. Whenever the connection to the router is enabled, I lose my internet connection. Quote

... Problem is, my modem is connected to my computer through USB, and there's no USB port on my router, only a phone jack. ...

The easiest way to fix the problem may be to purchase a modem expansion card with an RJ-11 "phone" jack and use that instead.

Regards,
Doc
You may need to reconfigure the router after it has been connected. You can often access routers by typing 192.168.1.1 in the adress bar of any browser.

REPAIRING your connection may also be NECESSARY.

Hello JJ,

the reason i think its a virus was that avg said i had one, it then gave me the option to move to virus vault (and another one i cant remember), but before i had a chance to pick an option, it DISPLAYED a message saying it was shutting down, and i havent been able to get past the "boot up advance screen" since.

Solve : XP will not complete installation?

Answer»

Hi all,

I'm trying to install XP on a new HDD and it's not working.  First off, computer info:
Old ASUS mobo (don't know the model, but it's from ~2005)
CELERON 3.2 gHz single-core processor
Seagate Barracuda 1gb HDD
HP DVD writer
CD-ROM DRIVE from 2002

Perhaps because the mobo is so old, it wouldn't let me boot from my new (SATA) DVD drive, so I'm using a really old (PATA) CD drive from my wife's broken-down machine to try to install.  The HDD is SATA also, of course.

So I have no problems for the first part of the install.  Everything goes well up until the point where the system reboots.  Thereafter, XP goes back and tries to start the installation all over again.  I've done this four times now.  Twice, it ACTED as though the previous installs weren't there.  Twice, it recognized the previous installs as a separate OS and wanted to write over them instead of completing the install.

What do I do next? Quote

So I have no problems for the first part of the install.  Everything goes well up until the point where the system reboots.  Thereafter, XP goes back and tries to start the installation all over again.  I've done this four times now
As a first test for the new HD . Try using another PC with SATA compatible, install by using the XP OS CD to rule out the old mobo, optical drive. On the old mobo, you could try installing with one or the other stick of RAM and swap test with another, same PSU.What happens if you take the CD out of the drive? Thanks for the replies.

jason, I don't have ACCESS to another computer, so I wasn't able to try your suggestion.

JJ, it SEEMS your question solved my problem.  I meant to give it a shot, but the very next time I tried installing, with your idea in mind, it worked!  I still don't understand it, but I'm not about to look this gift install in the teeth

I have 3179 MB of memory available for the processes, and with just the task manager itself and this one browser window open, less than 550 MB of memory are being used.  My laptop overheats and snaps off and I'm trying to identify possible causes.  Does the abundance of tasks listed in the Task Manager seem to be an issue?I have 83 processes running ATM...

you can try start->run cmd /c tasklist > processes.txt&start NOTEPAD processes.txt

to get a list of processes. If your laptop overheats, it's surely not caused by a number of running processes.Agreed...
Checking processes is not gonna fix this issue...Hi Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 28, 2011, 10:27:33 PM

Thanks!  Even if my problem turns out to have nothing to do with the Task Manager list, this is very helpful information. There is absolutely no reason to play with processes.
All processes come from two sources:
1. startups (these, not processes, can be controlled and TRIMMED down).
2. Windows processes (which better are left alone).Well, here's my list, if anyone wants to offer further comment.  When a couple of these items bounce around rapidly in CPU usage - 50! 2! 4! 50! 24! 30! 2! 24! 50! and pop in and out of the list it makes me think something is trying to execute and not being able to and that's what causing overheating.

One more time - running processes have nothing to do with your laptop's overheating.
In your report you don't list the most important column - CPU usage.

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.

Well, I'm not sure in what language should I explain it better, so one more time in English - your CPU usage is fine!

Download System Information for Windows (SIW free version)
No installation required.

After it scans your computer, navigate to Hardware>Sensors and post all info from there.

I would have gotten back to you sooner, but my computer overheated and snapped off.

As you can see in my last reply:

I acknowledged, in English, that the CPU isn't the problem.

As for SIW, I did install the free version, but I couldn't find any instructions for doing the actual scan.
Just double click on downloaded siw.exe file

Solve : Lagging out?

Answer»

I dont know what is going on! I put a new video card in (ATI RADEON 9550 256 MD DDR/ AGP 8x/4x) and added another 512 in memory. I have a P4 3.0 processor and every time that I go into Courtner Strike and play the processor fan seems to jump up in speed and lags out the game play. It will RUN at that speed for a min and then GOES back to normal. It will do that about every 5-10 min.  When I am not playing CS, it runs normal. I have installed the dirvers for it twice and now am lost at what to do next. Can someone HELP PLEASE!!! Fan up, game down, power supply?
How many watts?max output 250 watts.......There's a recent post in these forums that gives a link to a website to calculate your power requirements.
250W is very low.http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/Fed is right, power supply wattage at 250 watts is a minimum. 500 watts or so is not uncommon these days.

Remember that the power supply will only run at 500 watts if you are drawing that much power. It does not mean that your consumption will double.

Use the Power Supply calculator to calculate the MAXIMUM with EVERYTHING running and add 10%.

RAM Knowledge Base
RAM And What it Does
RAM Virtual Memory Paging
RAM Reseating & Fitting PDF File

Processor Temperatures
Service Pack Slipstreamer
Power Supply Wattage Calculator
Everest Home EDITION Computer Diagnostic Program

If the problem persists try using a constant speed fan.Cool, i will try that and see if i need to get a new power system. Thanks for the help and great site!!!Hope you get it fixed. Let us know how you get on if you will.I put a 350 watts supply in there and it STILL does it??? Any other thoughts on this problem? Please any help would be awesome and thanks for the help!!and how do you set a constant speed fan?Are you playing this with a cdrom?
Are you sure it's the processor fan that's jumping up?
My processor fan runs at a constant speed...I think.
Never really looked.no, the game is on the hard drive....and when it happens i look and it the processor fan that kicks into high gear. Do you know how to set the fan speed higher.Just reading my mobo book here, mine can be set from bios and the default is the minimum setting.
Maybe you can SNOOP around in there or check your own mobo book. What type of connection are you using to connect to the Internet? The connection is DSL and  i have not idea ho9w to look around my bioes......

Solve : Windows Millenium Problem?

Answer»

I'm using Windows Millenium, and I'm quite sure my computer is virus and spyware free.

I tried to run disk defrag, and it said I had problems and had to run scandisk, and every time I run scandisk, it freezes.

Any help would be great.download spysweeper from webroot.com.....and run it.....

what option did you chose in scandisk......standard or thorough...... and disk frag said something ......it has tried 10 to defrag this drive......diable the screensaver.....or do the scandisk/defrag/virus/ SCAN in safe mode///hold down the f8 key on boot up....what anti-virus program.....have you got??/I don't have spyware, I have zone ALARMS pro firewall, and AVG free version and the NEWEST ad aware.  I did have a lot of viruses in my restore file, but I learned how to turn it off then I eliminated them.

I tried both, the throuogh and standard, in safe mode, all I remember is disk frag saying that there are errors that I can fix in scandisk.

run scandisk in safe mode....hold down the f8 key on boot up>>chcoe the start windows in msdos prompt C:\WINDOWS *     now type scandisk   <<
Reduce the System Restore cache to remove all of the old restore points. What's that? Windows ME has a problem? Tell me something I don't know...    Anyway... How much RAM do you have? Do you have any major processes running while you start scandisk?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Etahn it is probably better if you use an ME bootdisk and boot into DOS then choose Minimal boot to get you to the DOS prompt.

There you should type: A:\>scandisk /all /surface

This is the thorough scan and will take about one hour per 10 Gb of drive-space.

Solve : hard drive: files disappear in explorer?

Answer»

this is my first time posting here but im pretty good with computers.  on running a WINDOWS xp system which i built.  it has been running great untill last week.  i have two hard drives, one with windows and programs on it, the other [250gb] is reserved for audio and video that i have.  i went and tried to access some audio files in explorer but the folders they were in were gone.  there are about 800 folders, each containing different music or video.  the second half of the folders was just gone.  however, some audio files from the 'missing' directories were stored in a winamp playlist and they still played, which means the files arent gone.  i cant figure out what the problem is but IVE unplugged it untill i can fix it.  is it something with a file index? is it because i had too many folders?  any help is appreciated. Was these  mp3 audio files via.....a P2P Program......

however, some audio files from the 'missing' directories were stored in a winamp playlist and they still played, which means the files arent gone. jtaylor20

therfore your pc still has them!
some are, most are shows and concerts ive recorded via minidisc [which i dont have anymore hard copies of], and the videos are digital projects for school.

i know they are still there, but i just cant access them unless i type in the exact folder name.  but they just dont show up,  i tried moving some of the folders to a different folder, and then a few other folders disappeared.  im thinking about pluging my hdd into my sisters system and see if they show up there.  i cant lose these files, which is why im not too keen on messing around with them.It sure SOUNDS like they are there, can you find a missing one with dos & check it's attributes?
I hope winamp doesn't store playlist files in a special cache directory
I'd be looking from dos to start with.

You might try changing the explorer view to list instead of icons, perhaps 800 big yellow folders is too much for windows little brain.  none of the icon display changes MAKE a difference.  how liable am i to lose these files do you think?

winamp doesnt cahe audio files, and when i click on file info the right location comes up, and like i said if i manually type on the folder adress it shows up.  this is really BUGGING me After the cmd prompt:C:\windows etc    type this dir/ s / c /p..it should bring up all the files on your system.....then you could use the recover   cmd......right, but if the files arent really gone will that make a difference? They are either there or they're not there.
Set windows explorer to show hidden files & folder.
Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View
then have a look with Windows Explorer and see if they are there.
We need to know if they are there on not first.or even this>http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htmnorton disk doctor patched it right up!!!!  turns out the file indexes were all screwed up, the report was very very long.  but everything seems to be ok now.  thanks for your help, guys. Thanks for the feedback.

Solve : Clean hard drive?

Answer»

I've read many things about how to clean out a full hard drive, but none have helped.

Here is my current hard drive:

Free space 785MB
Total Size 18.6 GB

There is barely anything in this computer. What's taking up all of the space and how can I find it? There are only a few files that are needed and I have no idea where all of the other space is being used. How can I find this out and free up some space?

I've tried:
ATF-Cleaner.exe
ccsetup303.exe

Neither found anything to erase. This is the first time I've see a hard drive this full and can't figure it out. This computer is not used very often and I am lost about all of the space used.  Any help on cleaning it up?Download and run treesize http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/which one? Does he want to solve the problem or find an answer?
The pragmatic approach is to use a larger drive. When one uses a pragmatic method there can be outcomes. Or maybe not.
He can choose basically one of two choices.
1.) Use  logic and reason to extrapolate possible explanations.
2. ) Be pragmatic and discover unexpected permutations.

Quote
At the deeper levels of understanding persuasion are many academically PROVEN explanations. Herein lie hundreds of them, all waiting to be discovered.
So, when his new 160GB hard drive suddenly becomes 90% full when they have almost nothing installed, what then? Get a even larger hard drive?

The size of the hard drive at this point is irrelevant. When there is a 12 car pileup on a highway, they don't just build a couple extra lanes so that there is room to drive around the wreckage, they eventually clean it up. That is no different here. You're suggesting they essentially ignore the issue and buy a larger hard drive- As I said, that will solve their issue with free space but what happens when there is another 12 car pileup and space is consumed inexplicably again? should they just buy an even larger hard drive/build even more lanes? Quote

Will not happen. Do not assume it will. Not enough date to support the conjecture. This has HAPPENED before, somebody believes a drive is being invaded. They try a larger drive and the problem goes away. Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 31, 2011, 12:00:04 PM

Solve : Quick Microsoft Outlook Question?!?

Hi, on our home computer we have 3 different USER accounts for Microsoft Outlook. They each have different data files (obviously), but when I change outlook preferences/options in ONE user account, it also changes in the other user accounts. For EXAMPLE, if I set a signature in one user profile, that same signature is set in the other two?

Is there a way to make Outlook save preferences seperately to each data file?

Solve : Applying a sceensaver?

Answer»

I've MADE this really cool screensaver USING 3ds max 7  , but i don't know how to apply it ,
help would be appreciated.

[glb]FireChaser[/glb]Screensavers live in the Windows\system32 directory. Put yours there as a *.scr file. Right click any blank spot on the desktop, choose properties, then the screensaver tab and you should be able to pick it from the list.

Hope this helps. That didn't work...
umm...
there are lots of folders in system32, could i have to save it in oe of those???
have i saved it wrong: i OPENED the file with windows media and resaved it as *.scr... should i save the 3ds max file(the program i used to make the animation) as *.scr?
any answers would be appreciated

[glb]FireChaser[/glb]you could do this download desktop  architect......and it will install your screensaver.......just point to the folder its in?? if you are planning to do more then that a program.....and it free.....I do not think you can just rename any file to .scr and have it function as a screensaver. You may need a converter.I was under the IMPRESSION that a standard screen saver had already been created not that it was in a proprietory format. If you have the option to save your file as a BMP, JPG, etc, you may find something helpful here:

http://www.make-your-own-screen-saver.com/

Hope this helps. Who still uses a screensaver? My monitor shuts down. I ASSUMED that saves power?

Solve : Cannot Activate XP?

Answer»

I'm working on an HP desktop running XP sp3.  The mobo, and other components, were changed out and now it is not recognized as an HP OEM machine and can't be activated.  The owner used a an activation and WGA hack and was able to use the machine for a couple months until MS caught up with it and now it won't get beyond the login screen without activation.  I do have a copy of XP I used on one other machine that's not being used anymore and thought maybe I could transfer it.  I'd like to simply change the product key, without reinstalling, but can't get past the Activation lock out.  If I can get in and manipulate the registry I could change the key.  I can get in with a Hiren's boot disk, but I'm not sure what path the get to the registry.  Any thoughts?1. Given this forum's policies on helping to bypass WGA, MICROSOFT EULAs, etc, I firmly believe the only advice possible is "re-install a version of Windows for which the computer owner holds a valid license."
2. Given the fact that you have changed the motherboard and "other components", the previous Windows installation is now functionally (as well as legally) invalid for the hardware it now finds.

... forum's policies ... Funny!  Wouldn't it be better to say you don't know?  Or better yet, say nothing at all!

Funny? Why? The forum rules are quite clear about piracy and bypassing/cracking copyright protection. You agreed to them when you joined. It wouldn't have been "better" to say I didn't know how to do what you ask about. It would be untrue, because I do know, exactly how to do it. To say I didn't know, and leave it at that, might appear to leave the thread unresolved and possibly seem to invite somebody else to provide an answer, which might remain for a while before the moderators removed it. It would still less have been "better" to say nothing at all, for the same reason. It would, however, have been "better" (for you) to have said nothing at all, because now you are known as a requester of cracking help and an argumentative type of poster, and this bodes ILL for you.
Sorry I don't have time to read all your post Salmon.

If any one runs ACROSS this post wants the answer, I found it on "Microsoft Answer" site at: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/xpsecurity/thread/387f3367-5fc4-4aa1-937d-6788a626029dThat link refers to a method of reactivating a legally licensed copy of Windows. McGuire's question asked how to bypass the OEM check on an OEM-licensed installation of Windows, after the OEM qualifying hardware had been removed.
Wrong again!

I only needed to get into the registry to change a value in OOBETimer.  Now, I was able to chage the product key and voila, XP is legal an activated.

Now GO put your pants on Salmon!

I have tried file recovery programs (like pc inspector) and under normal circumstances it works ,but now it does not ,there is no history of anything being deleted ,its just like it never existed .I really need help

thank you in advanceDavid,

Please answer a few questions...

Is your computer connected to the Internet or to a network?

Does anyone else have access to your computer?

What operating system are you USING?

Are the documents missing from the My Documents folder of your user account or from the shared documents folder?

Did you create a new user account for yourself?internet

no

windows ME

user accnt

noNo ,its my own personal computer NOBODY uses it but metry this type scanreg/restore after the msdos prompt....and chiose the last good cab file......answer yes to the splash screen.........they may come backThanks for the advice but unfortunately the files didn't come back .Oh well.........David:

I'm guessing that either you have been hacked and someone making a connection to your computer over the Internet deleted your files, or your hard drive is starting to go bad and your documents have been corrupted.

To check if your hard drive is going bad, boot to Safe Mode, click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > ScanDisk.  In the ScanDisk utility, select drive C as the drive you want to check and select the options to do a thorough scan and automatically fix errors.  Then click the Advanced button and select choose the OPTION to display a summary of what ScanDisk fixes.  If the tool finds many bad sectors, your hard drive is about to die and should be replaced soon.

If you suspect you've been hacked, consider installing a software firewall.  There are many good ones available to download (some that are free):

http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?qt=firewall&tg=dl-2001&search.x=30&search.y=2

My favorite, which i used daily when i had Windows Me,  is ZoneAlarm:

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp

But there are other good ones as well:

Well come to think of it ,I was trying to uninstall a program in the my documents folder (from the add/remove programs in the control panel) and i got a message that said that the folder or drive wasent found or mightve been moved (something along those lines i dont exactly remember) . Could this be a sign that i was hacked ,and if i was is there any ways to actually recover the files (or is that impossible?)
by the way i restarted my computer to try and fix the problem  and thats when everyting got deletedDavid:

Well, malicious software (like a Trojan Horse) may also delete files or folders.  The program you installed may have been one of these.  What was the name of the program you were trying to uninstall?

The program is called hyper snapdx ,but im sure that it didnt have any viruses because i have virus protection (that UPDATES itself everyday) and it wouldve told me about the infectionLog in as Administrator and have a look.Try searching for *.doc on you computer just in case you moved them by accident or with out knowing.go to the msdos prompt C:\>windows and type this after it.......dir / c/ s /p  no luck ,im so frustrated!!!!!!!!There is a lot of 'frustrated' getting AROUND at the moment.

Solve : XP Remember Network Password Check Box?

Answer»

Hi,

I've had a SEARCH of the internet and this forum and so far have been unable to find a suitable solution to this problem.

I'm looking for a WAY to either remove or grey out the "remember my password" check box on an XP Pro machine. This is not connected to AD or a domain so that OPTION is out. Is their anyway of doing using GP on the machine itself?

Any ideas?

TonyDo you mean the splash box....when GOING on the net...No,

The box you get if you try to map a drive. Below the username and password fields, there is a check box for remembering your password. I need to some how disable or remove this box.

Does that explain it?

Tony You do not want it to be able to show the remember the password that people provide? You may be BETTER off on a dedicated registry editing forum..http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/tutorials/tutorial.php/id/21

Solve : Changing Computer Owners Name??

To change the name of the registered owner, do the following: In the right pane, double-click RegisteredOwner. Under "Value data", type the name that you want, and then click OK/Exit.Thanks Merlin, but that didn't do it.  I also tried changing the entry under RegisteredOwner and it didn't do it.  The owners name is all over the registry.  I WONDER if I changed them all if that would work.  I'd hate to have to go through all that and have it revert back to the original when I reboot.
Any other ideas?  It seems like a person should have a way to do it without reformatting.

Solve : Win Xp would not recognize any keyboard?

Answer»

I have a p4 with intel 3.2 ghz processor and Win xp2 all working fine until I updated my wireless keyboard software/driver. I downloaded the update from Logitech and ran it, at the end the installer said can not find "mouclass.sys" so I searched and found it in the SP2 upgrade folder. after rebooting, the keyboard would not work. Now I can not type my password; as the only ADMINISTRATOR there is no other access to the system. when logged as another user,  the Device manager shows the keyboard with a yellow flag, but I can not update it or uninstall it because other users are not administrators. I removed the wireless keyboard and installed a standard keyboard, Windows would not recognize or acknowledge the new hardware. Both the standard and wireless keyboards work until windows is loaded (I can access the bios and press F8 to access windows in safe mode). All programs and games work fine (by other users) as long as the mouse is the only required hardware.

P.S. when I loaded Windows I had setup the Administrator with a password, then when the users were defined I setup my name with a deferent password that I change regularly.

Is there a way out of this without a total reinstall? Is there a way to enter the password (numbers only) without a keyboard?
please helpTry the following:

1. Before Windows XP loads press F8.
2. Select Last known good configuration and press Enter.I TRIED, it would not work. Windows does not seam to notice there is a hardware problem and does not recognize new hardware.1. Before Windows XP loads press F8.
2. Select safe mode and press Enter.
3. Choose the normally hidden moderator account
4. Remove all Logitech related drivers and reinstall your keyboard from the device manager.Canadian:

How are things in the Great White North? (OK, i'm showing my age with the reference to the McKenzy Bros.!)  I used to live just 20 min. or so from the Thousand Islands.

Have you tried another keyboard?  A new PS/2 keyboard will only set you back $10 (USD) and a used one will cost less than $4.  Or, if your system does not have a PS/2 port, you may purchase a USB keyboard.

Windows XP will automatically install the USB keyboard as soon as you plug it in.

I have never seen in the safe mode a selection for "hidden moderator account". I tried to go into safe mode on this computer and could not see that choice.

The keyboard works fine in DOS and in Bios setup but not in windows. Any other sugestions?

Cmd mode ^Merlin_2... I can not do a repair without BACKING up my files. and I can not backup without access to my account. I am the only administrator on this machine and can not log in without the keyboard.

Is there a way to remove the logiyech drivers manually by deleting the files or editing the registry?Type edit after the command prompt...and search for the logictech drivers.....and delete them...Well I tried everything and the problem is getting bigger. I ran the repair reinstall and when it got to entering the disk "key" the setup froze and now nothing will do other than a clean install. I guess I will lose one month of data, as the last backup was end of May.

However, for those who want to learn from this....Do not have a single "administrator" on any one  machine...and backup more often.....thanks for your help. Now I will go and start a clean install. There is often an administrator in safe mode that is hidden when booting normally. Can you get to the cmd prompt......if you type help/? and bunch of commands is listed......like recover

Solve : Batch to look at file creation date?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm trying to write a batch file (an additional to the users logon script) to find the modified date of a file, then find the difference between todays date and if the difference is greater than 100 days run a certain piece of software.

I'm sure this is fairly easy, but I'm pretty NEW to batch files. All I've managed to do so far is to output todays date to a text file. I think you can get the creation date using the "DIR filename", but this will need to be trimmed and I'm not sure how to do that in batch files.

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks for your helpThere are three dir SWITCHES available for dates:

/ta - date accessed
/tc - date created
/tw- date written

Calculations in batch files can be done with the set /a statement. That  said, date calculations are CUMBERSOME and usually involve a long SERIES of hardcoded IF statements.

A better tool would be Windows SCRIPTING (free and installed on Windows machines since Win95C) which has built in date functions for just the purpose you need.

Good luck.

Solve : Win XP installation freezes?

Answer»

I am trying to install Windows XP Professional on my new computer, but it keeps freezing at random points during the installation.  Would this be a problem with the CD or the computer?  And how can I FIX this?I had the same problem with a newly built system.  It either froze or just went dead during the windows xp pro installation.  Turns out when my cousin mounted the mobo in the case he didn't use riser.  The slightest shock or jerk would cause the mainboard to short out through the metal case.  On the metal caser there was a crater caused by an electrical spark right under the processor.

Hopefully and probably not your problem.  Did you use risers?  =]What are the spec of your PC....check the graphics card..and  check  if the ramsticks is seated...... best option is to go over the WORK you have done!Make sure that the CD you are using is scrupulously clean. You can wash them in luke-warm water with two drops of mild soap solution mixed in and a soft sponge, then gently dry with a clean LINEN cloth. Doing this simple task very often solves the problem of READ errors from the CD and ensures a smooth install.Make certain the HDD is formatted.

Solve : OS Question?

Answer»

I just received a COPY of Windows XP which I plan to put on my computer once I remove Windows ME.

I don't know very much about REMOVING and adding operating systems. How do I go about formatting my hard drive? How do I go above loading up Windows XP from that point?

Any help with these questions and any other advice would really help me out.Reformatting and installing Windows XP is very simple. Follow these general rules:

1. Set the first boot device to CD-ROM in the BIOS.
2. Insert Windows XP CD
3. Press a key to boot off the Windows XP CD when prompted
4. Choose to install Windows XP
5. It will automatically detect all the space available and tell you that an operating system is currently installed.

You are most likely given the choice to reformat the partition of your choosing.

The process is very simply as the Windows XP installation documentation that is displayed in front of you whilst installing will guide you through most of the work.

However, should you require additional assistance; post a message.

Is this winxp disk an upgrade disk.....if so you need winme to load it......No, its not the upgrade version.you could dual boot.........winxp//////and have winme as WELL....if you do post back.....How do I install Microsoft Windows XP?One more thing. My parents bought this computer from Futureshop and it came pre-loaded with Windows ME, plus a recovery disk. No driver disks came with my computer. Its a Compaq Presario(four years old), by the way. My computer is partitioned into a the regular C drive and a backup D drive.

If I'm installing Windows XP do I need driver disks? Or, can Windows XP recognize and use all my hardware without driver disksWindows XP is most likely able to detect and install all the hardware connected.

Just incase this doesn't work. I was thinking about keeping the backup Windows ME partition drive intact. If by some chance I boot the XP disk and something happens whereby I can't install the software, how would I go about accessing the partitioned drive and restoring my Windows ME on my computer? Would it be as simple as insterting the recovery disk and rebooting or would it even work if I flatten my regular drive? Two questions........how much ram has this got?.....winxp is hungry for ram.........? and why not dual boot .......you can keep winme..........and have winxp......if you dont like winxp you can uninstall it leaving......winme intact.......best of both worlds......How do I dual boot? Is it a similar process?yes read the setup screen.......or if you go for a complete install.......>>>the recovery disks will bring back winme if you want to.It is best to run an XP compatability test first of all to make SURE that your computer CAN run XP and use all of your software, etc. See the link below.

Clean installing is preferable and when I made the change from an OEM install to a full XP install I fitted a new drive to install to, so that it could be partitioned and formatted to NTFS.

If you do that then you can always return your old drive when you want to sell the computer on.

Have you also CHECKED for viruses?
If I suspected I had a problem I'd install, update & run the following programs.
First as a quick check because it's updated continually.
Free online scan at Panda.
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Then...
AVG, Ewido, Msoft Anti-spyware, Adaware, Spybot S&D,
and finally get a Hijackthis analysis.
Only then would I be reasonably convinced my computer was clean.Good advice, FED!

I had this same problem when I reinstalled XP on my system (which I like to do from time to time just to clean things up). Problem is when you do that you hand over a part of your hard drive to a file folder called "My Old Disk Structure", which can't be deleted. I discovered this after I attempted to delete it file by file from the DOS prompt; next time I rebooted, the desktop was there but the icons were nowhere to be seen. I ultimately had to reinstall the OS yet again to get them back. I never did find out what actually caused this to happen.
