Solve : Deleting the files?

Answer»

Hello,
I have a number of files coming on regular basis to a directory  and I need to LEAVE only these that are not late than 4 day and delete all OTHERS. For example, the OLDEST file has a date 6/12/2005 and the latest  6/30/2005. If I WANT to trim all files elder 6/28/2005. How the BATCH file should look like?
Thanks

What are your system TEMPERATURES?Hi friend...I think that your PC is running slow BCZ you defragmented your drives bcz I also had same kind of problem when I defragmented my drives. The only solution is that you must reinstall the windows after completly formating the drive containing windows.
And yes!!! also check your CPU cooler that it is working properly and there is no dust between FAN and Processor. Take care.

Solve : Getting rid of taskbar icons?

Answer»

Me and my mate are two old codgers who get along reasonably well with computers, help each other out whenever we can, but come up with some stumbling blocks now and again, would like to fix them, but don't want to upset the apple cart and screw the systems up. Hopefully, you wont need to know our exact XP setups as this is a general question sort of, l think?
- Oh, and we both have adsl, but with my modem connected to the computer, whereas he has wi-fi.
So, the taskbar, bottom right, has an array of icons that show upon startup. I have just two and he has millions of the things?
His wi-fi icon SHOWS as a terminal with two eclipses next to it, but there are also TWO twin terminals with a red cross next to each. There is also a bluetooth icon (blue lozenge SHAPE with a white lightning stike through it).
None of these mean anything so why are they showing and how do we get rid of?
Thanks
Have him post a screenshot of the taskbar and we can advise which ones can safely be removed...
In the meantime both should DLoad and install StartupCPL from Mike Lin...
It installs a small app in Control PANEL for managing startup items....

Do NOT disable anything if you don't know what it is.

PS i believe the 2nd network icon is for wired.Thanks Patio, and l always respect your advice.
Bit difficult to get to sync between the two of us (me and him that is - miles apart), but hear what you say and will at least download startupCPL.
Have dealt with you before (in the nicest possible way l hasten to ADD!) so THANK you for taking the time to relpy.
Will post back as and when we get some further details.
Kind Regards

Solve : Blank Screen...?

Answer»

Hi everyone

Basically, my problem is this:

When I press the on button on my PC desktop (Windows XP) it, as normal, goes to the 'Compaq' screen. After this, expecting the Windows XP loading screen, it instead stays on a blank screen. I have tried logging on in to Safe Mode but it does the same thing, staying on the blank screen. I am literally clueless. Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks  Quote from: bobbylelat on February 02, 2011, 02:39:13 PM

So you get to the screen with the list of options where you can choose safe mode. Is that right? Quote from: JJ 3000 on February 02, 2011, 02:55:48 PM

Yes, that's right.What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? Quote from: Allan on February 02, 2011, 03:05:02 PM

The last time everything was up and running I remember having to block two things via COMODO but I can't remember what they were. Nothing strange happened after blocking them, it was running fine and I shut the computer down as normal. Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?Let's see, if we can look at your computer booting from an external source.

Please download OTLPE  (filesize 120,9 MB)

  • When downloaded double click on OTLPENet.exe and make sure there is a blank CD in your CD drive. This will automatically create a bootable CD.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
    • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Depending on your type of internet connection, you should be able to get online as well so you can access this topic more easily.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked Do you wish to load the remote registry, select Yes
  • When asked Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning, select Yes
  • Ensure the box Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start.
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
  • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

I have tried this, but after clicking 'Yes' to the 'Do you wish to load remote registry' an error pops up saying:

I greatly appreciate all of your help by the way  You're welcome

Please download NTBR by noahdfear and save it to your Desktop.
File size: 2.44 MB (2,565,432 bytes)

  • Place a blank CD in your CD drive.
  • Double click on NTBR_CD.exe file and a folder of the same name will appear.
  • Open the folder and double click on  BurnItCD.cmd file. If your CD drive will open, simply close it back.
  • Follow the prompts to BURN the CD.
  • Now you will need to set the CD-Rom as first boot device if it isn't already (if you don't know how to do it, see HERE)
  • If you have any questions about this step, ask before you proceed. If you enter the BIOS and are unsure if you have carried out the step correctly, there should be an option to exit without keeping changes, so you won't do any harm.
  • Insert the newly created CD into your infected PC and reboot your computer.
  • Once you have rebooted please press Enter when prompted to continue booting from CD - you have a whole 15 seconds to do this!
  • Read the warning and then continue as prompted.
  • You first need to select your keyboard layout - press Enter for English.
  • Next you want to select the appropriate tool. Enter 1 to choose 1. MBRWORK
  • On the following screen enter 5 to select Install Standard MBR code.
  • Enter 1 to overwrite the infected MBR Code with the Standard MBR code.
  • When asked to confirm please do so.
  • Afterwards, please enter E to leave MBRWORK, then 6 to leave the bootable CD.
  • Eject the disc and then press ctrl+alt+del to reboot the PC.
See, if it'll boot.

**Important note to Dell users - fixing the MBR may prevent access to the Dell Restore Utility, which allows you to press a key on startup and revert your computer to a factory delivered state. If this is Dell computer, let me know before proceeding.

Solve : 180assistant help?

Answer»

please could you help i have a dell dimension 2400 it boots up fine but when i try to open control panel, help & support or any programme apart from a word programme it freezes, it KEEPS trying to send error reports (Internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close) i also get a message which says 180search assistant alert i try to continue but it freezes. please helpWhen has the problem first occured?

Install and configure the following programs:

AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
ZoneAlarm Free

Sygate Personal

The 180 Search Assistant is Spyware. I had it once...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thank you for your prompt replys, i have had to download the spyware onto disc as the computer in question will not go on the internet, but everytime i try to install the download it denies me permission SAYING i am not the administrator but it wont let me get into control panel or anything so i can change the user to administrator it just freezes. please help
I suggest that you do the following:

1. Before Windows XP loads, press F8
2. Select safe mode
3. Log in as Administrator

Thank you i have tried that but it wont load when i press f8 please adviseBefore Windows XP loads, press F8. A list should be presented. From that list, press safe mode.

Press the F key range, not F + 8.I have now got into safe mode and administrator i had transfered the above files as suggested onto DISK as the computer will not go onto the net, i tried to load mcAfee but it wont load in safe mode i went back into normal start and i still can not get into user accounts is there a way of getting rid of the viruses another way, please help.You may need to select safe mode with Network prompt from the list. However, it is not recommended when dealing with a virus/Trojan threat. Do not connect to the Internet until your problem is resolved and proper security MEASURES have been emplaced.

AVG can replace McAfee. It is a virus scanner as well. However, I was not aware of any viruses. You only told us you were INFECTED with 180 Search Assistant. Are you experiencing more difficulties?yes i did a virus scan with one of the downloads and it appears i have over 3000 i will try  what you suggested hopefully this will cure all.You have over 3000 search results? What scanner have you used?

i used avg which told me i had loads of viruses i think i might need a software programme to fix this, i also used reg clean with a total of 280 viruses this copy only cleans 20 what do you advise.The registry scanner does not locate viruses. It requires faulty registry entries. These are, as opposed to viruses, perfectly normal.

You may need to use a program such as Easy Cleaner which is freeware and can remove all results found.

If AVG truly found 3000 entries, could you show a screenshot?

It may be better to reformat and reinstall Windows, then take precautionary security measures.http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=810887

download spysweeper from webroot.com....That did the trick thank you so very much i am extremely grateful.

Previously, my CD Drive would function mechanically, but had disappeared from My Computer, and refused to boot up CDs and CD-ROMs. Now, it BOOTS up, but the CD-ROMs won't work, and once in a while it won't work mechanically either. Would this be solved by GETTING a cleaner for the drive? Or if not, any ideas as to what I should do? Sorry if I'm being a nuisance.  is this winxp.?.....if so you may need the cdgone REG patch

Solve : Local Area Connection Issue.?

Answer»

I noticed on the other computer WHILST being connected to the internet it kept stopping and starting saying something like a network cable was unplugged it was a bubble coming up on the bottom.
Local Area Connection.
It turned out something was disabled in the device manager.
We thought we'd sorted it but it said connected at 2.2MbPps.
We though no surely not as our connection was 0.5 Megabit and our max d/l speed was 56kb/s.
We then ran a speed test and it was coming out as 56 kb/s.
We TRIED to RESTORE but could not because it wouldnt successfully do it.
I even cleared all the viruses in system restore but still have no luck restoring.
Also the connection after 10 mins will just cut out and say Local Area Connection.
A Network cable is unplugged.
After 2 mins fromn then it will auto reconnect.

What's the matter with this and how do i sort it?
It's really irritating.

Cheers!!

Wouldn'nt be spyware would it though?You even cleared all the viruses in your restore?

Are you saying your system is effected and your Internet connection is slow? Do I need to spell it out for you?YEAH i think it did.
I explained quite clearly what the problem was i htink didn't i?Be certain that you removed all threats.oh definatly.

Jason:

Is your computer using protection?  It really shouldn't be open to such close contact with a multitude of other personal computers if it doesn't have an anti-virus program always running in the background.

There really is no such thing as "safe" surfing!

Should I bother reinstalling firefox, which was causing me problems before I deleted everthing.

Im using XP proAlso, is there a free registry cleaner that is effective I can useI have installed Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird on several computers. These computers included OS such as Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows XP. I have not EXPERIENCED a single problem that was serious enough to reformat.

I definitely RECOMMEND that you install Mozilla Firefox.

You had better run a spyware scanner..

MY two cents worth is......dont have two anti-virus PROGRAMS on your pc.....just the one is adaquate.....and load the anti-virus software....before connecting to the net......another browser is avant......and a FIREWALL....is a good one sygate...... have a look at the website i gave you??in your other post....Have looked at sygate and Zonealarm, both valid. Any ideas, is it worth running them bothRun only one firewall. Choose the one that is most to your liking.

I prefer Sygate, as the free version is more advanced than the free version of Zone Alarm. However, the Zone Alarm Free is friendlier to the eye.

Solve : sprtcmd?

Answer»

I am running  a REFURBISHED H.P computer with Windows XP Pro SP3 installed. This was a clean install by the refurbisher.Installing a program a screen came up saying I NEEDED netframe WORK to install. I found from a Windows site to down load Net frame work 4. I finally got it downloaded and installed with considerable trouble.Then I got the program installed. Now when my computer comes on I get a pop up saying sprtcmd.exe net framework initialization error unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application You sure, it's HP?
sprtcmd.exe is a part of Dell Support Center.Yup its a HP compaq dc5100mtDownload Autoruns for Windows: HTTP://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
No installation required.
Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program.
Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.
You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type:

Attach the file to your next reply.
Thanks for the replys. Thanks Broni for the awesome INFO  Anyhow I removed the netframework 4. The program I was trying to install took a 2.0 or higher net frame work. I down loaded that and everything works good. I found out this computer has a x86. I donot know if that is a good thing or not.Good news Quote from: chili on February 04, 2011, 02:58:31 PM

The program I was trying to install took a 2.0 or higher net frame work.

No such program exists. If a program was created for .NET 2.0, you must have 2.0 installed; 4.0 will not do. However, you will need 4.0 installed to run 4.0 applications; but 4.0 applications will not run applications created for previous versions of .NET.

Just consider the different major versions as entirely separate products; 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, and 4 are the versions you would likely encounter. Some people prefer to install all of them at once; there is no performance hit and you are "prepared" for the eventuality that you get a program that does require it, at which point you would have needed to install it anyway.

Hello Satish. Would you please delete three of your four posts. Someone will reply to the last one in due course.

Duplicate posts have been deleted, this will be the main post.

Reguarding this question it almost sounds as if the Satish MAY be trying to connect the LCD to their Serial port. If this is the case you will not be able to do this, the LCD or any display is only going to connect to the Video port (VGA/SVGA/Etc.) If you're trying to connect a Apple or other type of monitor that is not a IBM compatible monitor you will need to purchase an adapter from the LCD manufacturer (if compatible).

Which Make and Model of Processor do you have?

115 Gb is drive-space and is not related to memory.

To see how much RAM (Random Access Memeory) is fitted in your computer right-click My Computer and open the 'Properties' box.

Is it 256 Mb, 512 Mb, 768 Mb, 1024 Mb, or more?

You could also try turning off the hyperthreading.
it is 512 mbIf you do a lot of gaming you should add another 512 Mb of RAM. XP will take up to 4 Gb of RAM if the mainboard is the right design.

It depends on what sort of programs you use but it also depends on whether your system is clean of virii and trojans or not.

Yahoo is BASED in Sunnyvale, that's why it keeps coming up as the default location.Open the web page...set it to your location...refresh the page....then set it as your homepage in the browser...
Power down and re-boot...what happens ? ?I tried that and i still had the same problem. then I went to Control panel and clicked on internet options from there I clicked delete in BROWSING history and UNCHECKED cookies and history, then I rebooted and set my setting that I was trying to set and it worked. Thanks to all that were helping me.So when you SAID you deleted your cookies the first time, how did you delete them?I went to  start,settings,control panel ,internet options,browsing history,delete

Solve : HELP! TOUGH Windows Outlook Attachment Issue?

Answer»

First off thanks in advance for any of you MS gurus with the time and expertise to help me with this--
I've unsuccessfully been trying to find the answer all over the net for QUITE a while and am officially pulling my hair out cause I can't find anything on topic.

To put it simply, the problem occurs when adding an attachment in Outlook, Outlook/Windows DOES NOT fill in the file NAME field with the names of the files that match the letters I type. Normally Windows is supposed to "suggest" all the files in the folder that have the same name as what you've typed, removing "suggestions" after they no longer match or after you click one of the choices given.  On my computer at home, Outlook does this effortlessly so I know it's supposed to work.  Heck... even AOL does this when you add an attachment.

But not Outlook on my work computer.
The operating system is an up to date  Windows XP Pro SP3 and the email client is Outlook 2003.
Outlook works just fine EXCEPT the problem described above.
Specifically it happens when you go into Outlook to compose/reply to a message and then add and attachment and browse to get it.
At this point Windows does not give any spelling hints at all. I can still manually scroll through the folder until I find the name and double click to attach it, but the problem is that Windows isn't suggesting and giving file name options of files in the folder.
I can ALSO just drag the icon of the file into the outlook email window to attach it, so attachments work but not the name fill in.
This is problematic because I have a shared NETWORK FOLDER that has LITERALLY tens of thousands of files with very similar names and having to scroll through to find it is very painful and a waste of time.
I'm not sure if this is a windows problem or an outlook problem.

That said the auto-complete in the email field for the names and contacts is fine.
So UNLIKE 99% of people on the web, I'm not asking about fixing that since this part works great.

Can anybody help?
Or point me in the right direction with what function this is even called and how to better describe the problem?
Thanks again in advance

Solve : Windows XP display preferences keep reverting to previous setting on bootup?

Answer»

I recently assembled a new computer out of necessity (the PREVIOUS one had its motherboard fried by a failing PSU) so this is a new Windows XP install (about 3 weeks old).  The system works OK except for one odd glitch--I have SET the display preferences to display the Windows Classic theme rather than the XP theme, and I have set screen savers to "none".  Regardless, about 1 out of every 5 bootups, the display reverts to the XP theme and screen savers reverts to the XP screen saver, set to come on after 10 minutes.  I then have to go into the control panel and reset the display preferences back to Classic and no screen saver.  This has happened a half dozen or so times now.

If it were just a matter of screen appearance, I could live with the problem.  However, as this setup is used as a digital audio workstation, it is important that the screen saver be disabled.  I suspect this is a registry glitch of some sort.  I am not expert in editing the Windows registry.

System details:  CUSTOM built system (by yours truly), MSI 785GTM-E85 motherboard, AMD Athlon II 635-X processor, 4 GB RAM, EVGA GeForce 8400 GS display adapter, Windows XP with SP3 (freshly installed from genuine Microsoft install disk), Lynx One PCI sound card, Firewire PCI card by ADS (Texas Instrument chips).  System routinely used with Digidesign 002R firewire interface.

Installed software includes Pro Tools LE 7.4, Sound Forge 9.0, CD Architect 5.2, QuickTime player 7.0, Sony Vegas 7.0, Waves Native Power Pack audio plug-ins, Waves Restoration suite plug-ins, CD Burner XP, Corel WordPerfect Suite 8, Microsoft Word 2000, utilities associated with a Canon scanner and a Canon printer, Mozilla Firefox browser, etc.

There is no installed anti-virus software (which can interfere with professional level audio use).  I did try installing and using Iolo's System Mechanic program for checking and repairing the Windows registry, but no change was noted in system behavior.  Since no one has answered so far, this is an update to my previous post:  I decided to try establishing a new USER account to see if my display preferences would be recognized there.  So far they seem to be, but the new user account has another problem: it will not associate .PTF files with Pro Tools LE.  I have gone through the File Types association process in Folder Options in the control panel several times, and it simply refuses to work.  Pro Tools LE works fine, and I can open Pro Tools session files (.PTF) files from within the program no problem.  But Windows will not associate those files with Pro Tools, so I cannot open a Pro Tools session by clicking on the file itself, even when Pro Tools is open and running.  Any suggestions?

Solve : Unable to Boot at all!?

Answer»

My mother uses the Compa 2504 Presario, pretty much only for email, some Word, some digital pics...nothing complicated.

Last year we think it suffered lightning/surge damage and the modem and speakers went fizzle.  We had that repaired under warranty and no further problems since.

However...she sent emails on the 5th June, then none again for 3 DAYS.  When she then tried to type the keyboard completely refused to function.  Everything on the face of the laptop stopped working - the mute speakers, the touchpad, the hotkeys.  The only exception was the Power button.

She went out and bought a new keyboard which we never got to test...because in the meantime I had had some other thoughts about Sticky Keys and the BIOS.  On Startup, the keyboard worked and it would acknowledge a KEY depression so I entered BIOS with F2 and selected Reset Defaults.

Immediately, following a restart, the thing will not boot at all.  It starts with a Compaq splash screen and does nothing further.

I removed the battery and the next morning, my mother slotted it back in, turned it on and it booted okay - still no keyboard, but she checked email and turned it off again.  Immediately tried again and no boot.

It has not booted since.

Repair man basically looked at it for a week, then rang lots of people, Compaq said send it to them...but that was going to cost 320euros so we said no.

Why did resetting bios kill it?
why did it boot that last time?
If I can't get it to BIOS what can I do?
How old is the laptop?  Does it have a CMOS battery (Euro 2) and has that been changed during the life of the machine?try banging the underneath of it.......near the battery ....your hard drive.....maybe sticking...Hi, thanks for the reply,

I believe it has a cmos realtime clock so presume there is a battery.

I will have a look to SEE if it is accessible thru any panels or whether i have to dismantle to check.

I take it you are reccommending changing it?

Would that cause the problems I am having?It is less than 2 years old by the way...

I will hit it with something.....likely to HAPPEN anyway in the long RUN so no reason not to start now...my toshiba.....does it sometimes.....and i tap the underneath of it while it booting up......lazy hardrive...

Solve : PDWKI is missing?

Answer»

Hey.

I TRIED to restore my computer yesterday and got an ERROR I have never SEEN or encountered before. Anyways, I did the usual thing to restore it. Press f11 to go into recovery mode. I did that and did a destructive restore. When it was done, the computer restarted as normal. However, when it turned on I got the following message:

PDWKI    is missing
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart

Tried it, nothing happened. So now, I got my recovery/OS CD and tried to restore with that. The same thing happen.

Would really like some help.
Thanks.

Also, I'm not sure if it SAYS PDWKI, as some of it is cut off.

You need to supply the exact error message.
What operating System is it?
What kind of computer?
How old is it?
Why did you have to restore it?
Do you know what it means when that message comes up?
Are you sure that is what it really says?

If the computer is not really yours, that is a secret message to tell others to try and trace the location of the stolen Computer.  But we don't think you took somebody's computer. Tell us more about yourself.  What operating System is it? Windows XP
What kind of computer? Gateway/desktop
How old is it? From 2005
Why did you have to restore it? It was running REALLY slow
Do you know what it means when that message comes up? Nope :/
Are you sure that is what it really says? Not sure because it's cut off

Thanks.

OK.
It looks like you need to do the restore again.

Based on what? He already said he did it twice with the same result.Five  times are needed.
PDWKI has the same number of letters as NTLDR... some kind of corruption on a failing hard drive? BIOS settings for the hard disk got scrambled? NTLDR and BOOTMGR are the only "missing" items that give rise to that message that I can think of.

Quote from: Evoze

This is odd... cut off? How? On the left? But the words "is missing" etc are visible?

Does it look like this but with PDWKI instead of NTLDR?

Appears to be an esoteric error. But I think not.
If it can be repeated several times it almost certainly means the BIOS has been altered, but not by a typical hardware weakness. Rather somebody or something programmed the BIOS in a strange way.
A typical BIOS failure would make the system so unable that the installation would fail and never get to the error message.

On a hunch. Try another VGA card. Any card.Getting corrupted filenames is sometimes a sign of wrong disk geometry set up in the BIOS, so I wonder if the cmos BATTERY is failing; the machine is 6 years old. I want to know why the OP did the restore in the first place.

Good question...
However we have yet to hear back from him.
Bootsector virii although rare seem to be making a comeback.I think it would help if we knew when the message appeared in the boot up sequence, exactly what the message says, is his destructive restore really a clean install of his OS and is his recovery/OS CD a full version of XP or if it's an OEM version is it the right one for his computer.

Solve : How to backup this XP Pro OS for later install? No disc came with this PC??

Answer»

I have a problem with my network adapter connecting to the internet on this PC (HP 6715b in my specs) and I don't think it is a hardware problem, but rather a problem of settings in some advanced settings I messed with weeks ago. I don't remember what I did then and cannot figure out what's wrong now. I need this PC online ASAP and have no more time (after 4 days of trying) to figure it out.
 I'm thinking just install my XP Home OS to see if that will cure my problem and get it online. But I have no disc to reinstall this XP Pro OS that came on the PC when I bought it. What do I need to save to disc in order to be able to recover this OS in the future?
Thanks'
MikeCheck with the manuf. and see if there is a hidden Recovery partition on that MACHINE....
If there is they will have info on creating a CD...

However using it will wipe all your apps and DATA and take the machine back to Day One status...I ended up backing up all my FILES to CD and installing Vista X64. I bought this laptop used from a pawn shop and never felt good about running the XP Pro OS because this PC originally had Vista Buisness from the factory (original product key sticker attached). I'm not so sure the XP Pro install wasn't pirated by the previous owner or the pawn shop. And I never could get the OS to show me as the owner in 'computer specs' (discussed in this thread). I bought this Vista X64 from Newegg so I know it's not pirated.

The network adapter problem turned out to be me not pressing the reset button on the ISP's router. I was trying to get the IP address assigned VIA cycling power to the router which did not work. Live-and-learn.

So I've got my XP files saved and online with Vista, so I'm happy.

Thanks once agian patio!

Good to hear you're fixed up...

Is there any pointer turning to hourglass during slow booting?Desktop. Emachines Windows XP It happened when I got a virus. I already got help from one of the volunteers to get rid of it.  I'm not sure if its from all the programs I had to download to get rid of it.Did you finish the procedures and get a clean BILL of HEALTH from the Experts ? ?

Solve : How do I delete OS selections to 1?

Answer»

I installed XP Pro.... sound, ethernet, and video cards not working. I INITIALLY thought installation went wrong I reinserted OS CD for repair option and ejected when I realized it was complete new install, tried it again, and quit a SECOND time. I used another machine to download drivers from Dell to fix the three cards. Now during start up I have 3 boot options, if I don't select option 1 within approx. 6 sec. machine will automatically try to boot to option 3. Options 2 & 3 will not work. How can I delete options 2 & 3?      Why not just format and start again? This time, immediately after getting into the OS do the following:

1) Install the chipset driver and reboot. Then install all other drivers
2) Install a GOOD anti virus utility
3) Download all Windows Updates EXCEPT for hardware / driver related updates
4) Make sure you have the latest service pack installed (SP3)I spend a good deal of time doing all on the list. all is up to date including anti-virus. I know that if I start all over I can eliminate the other two options but I was hoping to avoid if possible as I have already spent time installing other software.Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System Startup, click Edit. This will open boot.ini FILE in Notepad.
Copy all content, and post it in your next reply.[Boot Loader]

It LOOKS little bit strange.
Which option works for you?only option # 1This one?
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetectYes, should I delete everything after that on notepad?You have to edit that file.
Be very careful. Make sure, you don't make any mistake.

Delete last two lines.

This line:
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
should read:
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

So, you entire file should look like this:

[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetectI copied and pasted to avoid mistakes. I'm restating the machine after some automatic updates. I do appreciate your help. I'll post the result.OK....PERFECT!!!! THANKS A LOT! YOU SAVED ME SOME A LOT OF TIME AND TAUGHT ME SOMETHING.You're very welcome Keep in mind however you still have 2 botched Win installs on that system...not only taking up space.

Solve : files jpg?

Answer»

If I move a jpg file to another location once moved it will not open it says it is being used by another program. then it will not let me delete it. now if I copy a jpg file that is ok, any help on this pleaseTry booting to safemode(F8).How are you moving the file?just a simple select the file and then on LEFT side select move, it also does the same thing using drag and drop. Quote from: sludge on January 29, 2011, 11:23:09 AM

just a simple select the file and then on left side select move,
I don't know what that means.Are you using a software while doing this actions or just by Windows explorer? Have you tried using safemode?
 under file and folder tasks on left side of screen  rename move copy publish email or delete                                                                                     I have not tried in safe modeNo I am not using any program for this, Have now tried in safe mode it's still the sameTry this one --> http://www.emco.is/products/move-on-boot/features.phpWell I installed the program move on boot, and have tried five times but still will not move  open or delete.Have you copied all or selected jpeg files to another folder/location? So now you just want to delete the file/folder? You may need to RUN a diagnostic test for your HD for errors since safemode did not manage to kill and delete the files. Try this --> http://www.snapfiles.com/get/fileassassin.html
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/Well the unlocker program will delete them but that still does not solve the problem. I would like to just do as I did before just simply move files to where ever I know I can still do that by copying them then deleteing the originals It would be nice to know just what went wrong Thank you all for your interest and help. Quote
Well the unlocker program will delete them but that still does not solve the problem.
The approach here is for that particular jpeg files or folder that is troubling you. I understand that you want to move to another location and not copy,paste and delete the original files and here lies the problem as your original POST (only jpeg files but not all files). If the Window function move or delete restricts you and only copy can be done on all files, then there is something wrong either with the HD, Accounts or OS which is different based on your initial post.  When I made the original post it was because it was jpeg files I was working on but it is with all files and folders. How would I check out all three things you suggested?This is beyond what it seems I can't find a better solution since all files are locked or cannot be done by certain functions... I suggest running chkdsk -->  http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/chkdsk.htm
I am keen on making a back-up on all files now on a different location/hard DRIVE while copy function is still usable. Then make a complete install. But run chkdsk( /f or /r) if it can make any solution. The Experts may give you other solutions/suggestions so you may wait for the reformat thing coz that's just me.

Solve : change xp theme for one program?

Answer»

I am using a theme in windows xp (not an msstyles theme, just a normal one). When running a certain program, it is not usable because of certain colors in the theme. I have to change the theme every time I use the program. I need to know if it is POSSIBLE to use the default theme for a specific program only. Is there any program I can use that will do that?

ThanksHow STRANGE.
Why not just create a new user account?
Turn on fast user switch. Then you can switch to the other user. Each user has his own theme. This won't accomplish what he's trying to do...

What app are we talking about ? ? Quote from: Linux711 on February 06, 2011, 01:34:26 AM

I'm assuming by "msstyles theme" you mean "luna theme" and are thus using Classic. Although really the answer is the same either way.

Yell at the program vendor/writer. Nobody really answered, so what program can I use to do this?

Quote

Yes. I can do that if I have to, but it would be nicer to have a program to do the theme change.

Currently, I am running the program in Virtual PC with the classic theme enabled so I can use it.

I am a programmer, so if it wouldn't be too hard, I might consider writing my own program to do this. Although, I have a suspicion that this wouldn't be easy to program. Whenever a program loads, it reads the theme setting from the registry, right? Would it be possible to write a program that would get inbetween the problem app and the registry and trick it to use a different theme? Quote from: Linux711 on February 07, 2011, 11:07:59 AM
Whenever a program loads, it reads the theme setting from the registry, right?
No. The program reads the various metric via GetSystemMetrics and SystemParametersInfo, as well as using the Extended OLE system colours with the high-bit set.

However, this isn't so much the program as much as it is the default implementation of things like WM_PAINT and WM_CALCSIZE, and WM_NCHITTEST that provide the "default" behaviour that gives the more familiar arrangement of caption buttons.

This sounds more like the application is not reading the theme colours for certain elements, and using a hard coded colour, and it uses a theme colour, say, as the background to that hard-coded colour and they are the same (making text invisible) or have poor contrast.

Just returning a new colour in a subverted function registry access function wouldn't be enough; both GetSystemMetrics and SystemParametersInfo no doubt cache the return value from these functions system-wide, much in the same way the system imagelist is cached. The only time it knows to check the values again is when a system settings change message is broadcasted. So you could consider instead "subclassing" SystemParametersInfo and GetSystemMetrics and returning the new values that you want the application to use.

Good luck with that, since no doubt the application is compiled and therefore links directly to the functions in user32.dll; so your first task would be to literally have your appinit_dll hack the running processes import table so that it uses the functions from your library. Almost all AV programs will do a double-take when you do that; also, it might not work, since the program might very well have been designed to call those functions dynamically, or it might have been written in a language that calls those functions dynamically (VB6, for example, always performs a GetProcAddress() to get the pointer to a declared function and calls it at run-time). In which case, you would also need to supplant the import table for GetProcAddress; except GetProcAddress requests the pointer to a function i na given module, so you would have to supplant GetModuleHandle() as well; and some programs will acquire it via LoadLibrary, so you'd need to supplant that as well so that it returns the module handle of your appinit_dll... problem is, now if the program tries to get a handle to some other user32 function, it's calling GetProcAddress() with your module handle and the return is NULL unless you happen to export that function, so now you have to add a whole bunch of exports that forward to the "real" functions in user32.

And even in the best case, you are probably left with a tangled ball of yarn that hardly rolls.

Quote from: Linux711 on February 07, 2011, 11:07:59 AM
Currently, I am running the program in Virtual PC with the classic theme enabled so I can use it.

You are confusing. You say you have it running in VPC with the classic theme enabled so you can use it; then you say you want to be able to switch themes. Themes are merely the colour selections of elements; the gradient title bar, icon sizes, icon fonts, the size of the title bar fonts and caption buttons, the colour of 3d-elements, ETC. All of those are a theme.

However, by implication it seems that you don't want the program to run with a theme. You want it to run with a Visual Style, like the Luna or Aero styles, and still have all text visible.(or something) If the application was designed to run with a Visual Style, it will have a Manifest file either as an Embedded resource (#24) or it will "come with" a manifest file in the form of program.exe.manifest which appears in the same folder; by deleting this resource or file, windows will by default link it to Common Controls version 5.0, which in effect prevents the Luna or Aero Themes from entirely skinning the window, meaning that elements will be drawn using the default theme values rather then using the uxtheme functions, the same as if you ran it with windows classic. In Windows VISTA and 7 you can explicitly disable Visual Styles by checking off the incorrectly captioned "Disable Visual Themes" button on the compatibility tab of the properties dialog for the program.

EDIT: looking back, Geek-9pms suggestion of using fast user switching is probably the most ideal; you can keep that program running in another account and switch between that account and yours just fine. What you want to do is have multiple themes and visual styles enabled at once; you want most of your windows to show your "default" visual style, which I can only guess is probably a Luna theme since you haven't explicitly said so and you say you have to run the program in windows classic so I am left only with the inference that you are probably running in the default theme- and you want another program to run with a completely different style. Aside from having some windows run with the current Luna theme, and some not (depending on wether they link to Common controls 5 or 6) you can't just skin windows willy-nilly with all sorts of different elements; the visual styles are all drawn by uxtheme, either a program uses uxtheme (and imports common controls 6) or doesn't. If it uses uxtheme.dll, then uxtheme.dll will use the globally allocated bitmaps that it loaded either at system boot or when the theme was changed that correspond to the currently selected theme. Otherwise, it isn't called at all and the default drawing occurs using the selected theme colours. Quote

I think I'll GO with this option. Even if I was capable of doing all of what you talked about, I don't think it would be worth the time.

Thanks for the information. It's amazing how much you know about this.

still it can't remove

I still have the virus alert from Norton

my screen keeps frozen and sometime can't turn off or restart.

Does it happen to anyone?, I've checked with Microsoft support , I have modified registry according to them,
but no luck

Thanks

try reformatting again, this time, before you connect to the internet you should install norton.  also, you should put the virus fix or patch onto a cd or something and load it on before you plug into the internet.  i had a similar problem last year, just a different virus.  it must have been attached to my ip or something.  but the above worked for me, so try it out. I did scan and analysed etc..

HOWEVER, I just reformated for 3rd times this week

now I understand 2 things

1/ my ip was attacked by a virus as soon as I connect to the internet
2/ before I connect I should ENABLE my firewall! I'm just wondering it is offered by SP2?

Anyway, I just enable my firewall through network connection, so far this famous virus is not back there yet

Solve : system32 file booting with XP?

Answer»

Everytime I boot my PC, the "system32" file opens up, and I'm clueless to know why.

I'm running Windows XP Home on a PC barely 6 months old. My wife and I have separate usernames for it, and this only happens to me.

We've looked in the Startup folder and ran msconfig. I UNCHECKED everything I knew was safe, but I'm no expert so I don't know if it's one of these options.

I don't understand why the folder itself opens up. There's no message, the computer runs perfectly fine, and as I said before, this does not happen to my wife.

It's not exactly a huge problem, but it shouldn't be there and it bothers me, lol. Any idea of how I can stop it from loading?

Thanks!  Clear the decks

Frehley:

Do you mean that the C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder (the one with all the .DLL files) opens every time you start your computer?  If so, you may try this:

1. Click Start > Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel SELECT Folder Options.
3. In Folder Options uncheck the check box next to Remember Each Folder's View Settings.
4. Click Apply and OK.

That may keep the folder from opening each time you start your PC.

Regards,
Doc

Yes, the C:\WINDOWS\System32 is the folder I meant.

I tried what you said but unfortunately it still loads up.

Any other ideas?GO to

1. Start
2. Run
3. Type Msconfig
4. Click OK

Is the General tab set to Boot normally?

Scan for Viruses, Spyware and Trojan Horses as well.Could it be that you have added the C:\Windows\System32 as a task in Task Manager?Nope, still loads.

I changed the boot to Normal and checked Task Manager, the only thing in there is my virus scanner.

:-/Scan for Spyware, Trojan Horses and Viruses.How long has this going on! make model and specs of your pc......OK, downloaded the windows Spyware detector, nothing.

Re-ran McAcfee Virus Scanner even though I only ran it a few days AGO, nothing.

I have a Dell Dimension 8300. Pentium 4, 3Ghz, 200Gb HD, 512Mb RAM.

It's been doing it for months. I'd say at least 4-5 months, but we've been without the internet for most of that time (had it, lost it for a while, have it now), so there wasn't a whole lot I could do about it without being online. It's very confusing because other than that, the computer is great, and what setting do I have different from my wife's account on the same computer?

Hold the f8 key on boot up and chose the last good config...Frehley:

OK, let us get to the bottom of this.  Please...

1. Click Start > Run...
2. In the Run... text box, type [size=13]msconfig[/size] and click OK.
3. In the System Configuration utility, select DIAGNOSTIC Startup.
4. Click Apply and OK.
5. Restart your computer.

If the Windows32 folder still opens, let us know.  If it does not, then one of the services, startup items, WIN.INI items or SYSTEM.INI items is to blame.  We may find out which one by next trying selective startup in the System Configuration utility.

Let us know how it goes,

What OS are you using? Check your firewalls. Did you use the Network Setup Wizard? How is your network setup...wired, wireless, a combination of both? Is there a router in this picture?

Solve : reloading software problem?

Answer»

Hi everyone.
I recently replaced my hd in an older celeron 300 machine with identical hd. Problem is when I try to install W98 I just get the black SCREEN that says
"Boot from Atapi Cd Rom : Failure"
Any help greatly appreciated  could be that the cd drive is going bad, have you had any problems with it prior to this?

if thats not it it could be that windows 98 isnt compatible with your system(but i doubt it), EXACTLY how old is it?Go into the bios setup......< hold down the del key on boot up> and change the boot sequence to boot from the cdrom drive.......the error is because you do not have a cdrom driver......Okay I went to bios screen and made sure cdrom was first item on start up.
I also changed the dvd/cd drive by PUTTING the old cd drive back in. Same message, not sure what to do next.
Any ideas?Back to basics.
You need to have your HDD in & CONNECTED properly.
You need to have a cdrom in & connected properly.
You need to have your bios DETECTING these things.
You need to have your bios set to boot the cdrom 1st.
You need to have a bootable cd (windows) in.
You need to boot to the cdrom & install windows.

Solve : MS-DOS icon Missing/Inability to fully resize DOS window?

Answer»

After a clean reinstall of XP on a Dell 2400, I found that the familiar MS DOS icon was gone, and in its place, at the  Command Prompt location, is just a black square with  "C:\."  Years ago, I wrote a large DOS program which I continue to use to manage financial information, and since the reinstall, I find I can't adequately resize a DOS window, or get things to lay out properly in a full SCREEN DOS window.  I think the missing Icon may have something to do with this irritating SITUATION, which I confess I don't have any idea how to explain or correct.  Maybe some of you RECOGNIZE the symptoms and have a suggestion to offer.  PREVIOUSLY, I have only had to click on the dos icon, select full screen mode, and go about my merry way.  Now, no matter what font or screen layout I specify, the dos characters are too small and difficult for these old eyes to read.  I will appreciate any help available on this subject.To modify the Cmd.exe shortcut on your desktop:

R.Click the icon
Select Properties
Select the Shortcut tab and make a note of your current settings

In the Target dialog box type:
%windir%\system32\cmd.exe /X/Q/V/T:1f/E:ON /K  prompt $p$g

In the Start in dialog box type: C:\

In the Run dialog box make sure Normal window is shown

Edited to add:  If you'd like to open Cmd.exe from your keyboard enter a letter, say C, in the Shortcut Key dialog box.   After clicking Apply and Ok whenever you use Ctrl+Alt+C the Cmd.exe window will open

Select the Options tag
In the Display options pane bullet fullscreen

Click Apply then OK

When you left click the icon the Command Prompt window should open with a blue background and white lettering.

If you are not happy with the new screen display go back to your original settings.   If you want to reduce the window size you can use Alt+Enter to toggle between full and small screen presentations.

Good luck
Dusty:
Thanks for the information you furnished.  I'm at a different machine now, but I'll try it later and post results.  By the way, where do you find such stuff as this.  I'd like to find a manual or reference book of some type with this info.

Thanks very much. Quote from: Dusty on August 20, 2008, 08:29:10 PM

The cmd.exe parameters come from cmd/?  the prompt parameters come from prompt/?  both entered at the cmd prompt.

How to set up a shortcut comes from sites like this.  I also subscribe to Techrepublic which I find useful.

Never heard of a book covering all tips, if there was one it would be about 5g pages.   LOL  Dusty:

Finally had a chance to implement your solution - it works just fine.  Thanks again for all your help.  Now if I could just find my old MS-DOS icon ...SystemRoot/system32/shell.dll.......Patio:

Thanks for the suggestion, but the system reports no icons in the shell.dll file.  Of course, I found a slew of icons in the shell32 folder, but, alas, the old, familiar MS-DOS icon is not among them.  It's no biggie, of course, any old icon will do, but I guess I just got used to the original (and I wonder just what happened to it during my reinstall).

Thanks again.
Google MSDos icon and click on images in the upper left side...

              C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MORICONS.DLL - it's not quite the old familiar icon but might suit.Msdos is not available on win 2k/etc...........The c:/ is..Okay - here's the authoritative skinny on this important issue.  The REAL MS-DOS icon is where I now assume it has always been - contained within a file named ... are you ready for this? ... C:\Windows\System32\PIFMGR.dll.  I don't really know just how to express my complete and utter humiliation after searching, searching, and more searching, and never finding this fairly-obviously-named file.  But there it is, and now we can all sleep soundly again.
I completely forgot about pifmgr.....
Great Detective work on your part ! !Let’s be honest, more than a few of us still have a DOS application we like to run once in a while. Concern about losing access to these old family favorites may be keeping some of us from upgrading out of XP long after we would otherwise have done so. If you’ve tried running a DOS application under the Win 7 beta or Vista, you are already aware of the problems. The new operating systems will run DOS applications, but not very enthusiastically.

For one thing, shortcuts created for running DOS-based programs under Win 7 or Vista will display only an unattractive blank vanilla icon on the desktop. For another, all you get to run your DOS application in is a cramped little window almost too small to be usable.

Here’s a way to improve on both of these situations and enhance your DOS experience under Win 7 or Vista. It is adapted from a posting by Edward Mendelson on a Word Perfect-DOS site a year or so ago.

First, be sure you have copied all the files you need for your DOS program to a folder you can locate again when prompted. Now right-click on the desktop. Select New from the menu, then Shortcut, and then enter cmd.exe when asked for the location of the item. Click on Next, and type the name you want to use in the shortcut. For example, if the program you want to use is Professional File, as it is in my case, type in Pro File and then click Finish. Next, right-click on the resulting generic shortcut and choose Properties. Select the Shortcut tab and note what is now displayed in the Target field.

Do not alter what you see there, but move the cursor to the right of cmd.exe, type a space, then add this text:

/c c:\(folder location)\(executable file name). In my computer this would be /c c:\PF\PF.exe. Notice that the text to add begins with a forward slash, then the letter "c", then a space, then the folder location.

Now you are ready to select your icon. Click on Change Icon button and type moricons.dll or pifmgr.dll in the space under "look for icons…" at the top. Click OK and select the icon you want from the choices offered. Click OK again, and your new shortcut, complete with a new icon, will be displayed on the desktop.

The next step is to help resolve the problem of the cramped window you get to work with for your DOS application. You can’t actually increase the number of lines allocated to the DOS window, but you can make it bigger by choosing a larger font size. Right-click on your new shortcut and then the Font tab. Now select the Lucia Console font size you want. I find 20 about right, but you can pick a larger size if you prefer. The working window will enlarge in response to the font size change. Click OK, and you will finally have both a shortcut icon of your choice for your DOS application, and a window large enough to actually use.

Solve : The Ultimate Computer Problem~?

Answer»

Computer OS: Xp
Main Problem: BOOTMGR is missing + Blue screens like no tomorrow.
Another Problem: Computer has 2 fans. 1 fans works perfectly, the other one makes a lot of noise like it's working super hard.

Something to know:  I wiped out the harddrive using another computer to do it. So I pretty much have a very clean harddrive in it now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Please Please bare with me.
First time posting on this forum about my problem so I'll just give all the information I can.
Ok *takes a deep breath* I have a broken computer, and by broken I mean 5 years ago it started giving me these weird error boxes when I'd start the computer up.  Now I don't remember what they said, but I'm sure those where major registry errors.
After some time I noticed my fan would start blowing hard. If you can imagine it starting low, then getting slightly higher and higher until you’d think it'd blow up.  Occasionally the computer would just blue screen saying something was wrong and your computer will now be shut down, but the computer would all in all still work.
Ok.  After while again the computer just decided not to turn on.  I guess I had a lot of viruses on it even though I had virus software on it. When I'd boot the computer up it'd say "Missing BOOTMGR".  Now I had no idea what that was.
I figured this: Maybe if I could find some XP disk, I could just...reinstall windows right?  Well I tried it.  I ran the disk from the boot up (keep in mind I cannot reach the OS itself at this point only the boot up screen) and it would say starting disk.  Well I'd see the installation screen for XP and I thought I was home free, but I was wrong.
Blue Screen!  No matter what, after I get to a certain point of doing anything past the beginning boot screen (for example trying to install a new OS) it would just blue screen at random points.  Yup not just at one specific area, but at random points it'd just randomly blue screen.  Heck I almost got to the end of the XP installation, but it blue screen on me and well..I was a sad PANDA.
So I was wondering.  What could the overall problem be?
I took the computer apart and look at it, but I am not the hardware type so I really have no idea what I'm looking at besides the ram and mother board.  I have this feeling.  That computer is still runable, but my knowledge is the only thing keeping me from getting it to work.
So doctors.  Now that you've all heard my story.  What is the diagnosis?
What did/does the bluescreen say? particularly the STOP code and any file reference it gives would be helpful.
No. Probably malware. Possibly not even real "errors". (There is no such thing as a Registry "error" anyway)
CPU was taxed. Also likely due to an infection.
Given the last two symptoms, it sounds like it was absolutely loaded with malware.
That's indeed strange since BOOTMGR is the windows Vista/7 boot loader. Missing NTLDR would be the equivalent XP error.
saying it "blue screens" tells US very little. The blue screen isn't in and of itself a diagnostic tool, what the blue screen says (particularly the STOP code and any referenced drivers) is far more important then simply saying it blue screened.
The fan that makes the noise, is it the one close to where the power cord plugs in?
Something to know:  I wiped out the harddrive using another computer to do it. So I pretty much have a very clean harddrive in it now.
What does this mean? Did you install windows? Is it just a blank hard drive now? Quote
saying it "blue screens" tells us very little. The blue screen isn't in and of itself a diagnostic tool, what the blue screen says (particularly the STOP code and any referenced drivers) is far more important then simply saying it blue screened.
Well thats neat to know, but I'm gonna have to wait till tomorrow so I can see that since I don't have my keyboard with me. Yes I know it was prolly full with viruses or this "malware" stuff i know nothing about.
It means I took it and said format. It's wiped clean with nothing on it.  See I thought if I cleaned it out completly it'd take that blue screen away seeing it was practically dead anyways.
So if finding something wrong with the computer depends on that error type from the blue screen then I'ma be trying that out tomorrow when I can get my keyboard back.
When was the last time you cleaned your computer out with a can of compressed air?
The computer has a wiped harddrive, and the bluescreens occur during setup...oopsThe may help. On maybe not. Useful reference. You Tube Video.
Fixing BOOTMGR is missing Error While Trying to Boot Windows Vista Ok I'ma add on some more stuff.  You guys know a whole heck of alot more than I do so I'ma just post what I am seeing.
Yes Harddrive is clean.  It has nothing on it as of right now.  Ok here is what I see.
When I start up I get the normal Press Del for the setup and f9 for Xpress recovery.
Ok I am capable of pressing those and having it go to either one.  Now lets say I don't press it and I let it continue. It says this.
-----------------
Verifying DMI Pool Data .........................
Boot from CD:
Press any key to boot from CD........
BOOTMRG is missing
Press Ctrl +Alt+Del to restart.
-----------------
Edit*
Ok if I have my XP cd in there and I press to Boot from CD it'll take me to Windows Setup and hang up there.
Sometimes It says it's doing stuff like "Setup is loading files" and then other times it'll just hand up and like...just freeze.
-----
If i do sucessfully get past that it tells me "The File aic78u2.sys is corrupted" Press any key to continue.  Then it'll just say setup failed. Press any key to restart your computer.
I'ma fiddle with this and see if i can get that error to pop up.
*Edit again.
Now it is saying INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing, status 13.  Setup cannot continue. Press any key to exit.
Edit
The file dac2w2k.sys is corrupted. Press any key to continue.
Oh to answer that question about where my power plug is,  It looks like it plugs directly into the back of where that fan was that was sounding like it was going to explode.  Try cleaning the CD. If that doesn't work try a known good CD drive. Also, you should clean all of the dust out of your computer with a can of compressed air. Give that little box where the power cord plugs in extra attention while you are cleaning. Also, some more HISTORY about this computer.
How old is it?
Are you original owner.
Original components?
Motherboard model or Make and model of then whole system?
More that one Hard Drive?
How big is the hard drive? One partition?
Did it ever have another OS on it? (Some OS will leave some drives in mess that XP can not handle. Rare? Yes.) Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 09, 2011, 05:42:25 PM
Ok.  The computer was made from spare parts about 6 years ago by some guy my dad knows.  The hard drive was really small...less than 100 megs I wanna say.  I remember not having much space on it at all for playing around with and the only OS on it was XP.
About cleaning it.  YEA I kept it pretty clean.  Seeing we got free air cans I'd always blow this out at least once a week.
--------
Here is a question though.
I remember having a completely new harddrive in one of my old school classes and installing it in a computer...sorta like mine.  I booted from the disk and that whole thing about setting up PARTITIONS came up,which we did, and then simply installed it.  On this computer though, even though this harddrive is cleaned, it's still giving me bookoos of "This item is missing".  Does that mean there is something wrong with the hardware itself?
Could I be getting these "missing" errors because something came unplugged?No. The clue is BOOTMGR is not an XP vocabulary item
Quick answer. Try another Hard drive. The problem will go away or I will eat crow. Trust me on this.
Alternate answer. Get a copy of GPARTED. It is a bookable CD. Use it to delete any and all partitions. Then create a new partition that uses only 7GB of the drive.Format it as NTFS. And mark the partition active and MSDOS type.
Unless the XP CD has been damaged, that should solve the problem.
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.phpJudging from the completely random nature of the setup errors, and the fact that those errors are with reading the files from the disk, either the disk is scratched/damaged (doubt it, it would probably error out on the same file every time) or some of the RAM has failed. best way to check RAM would be to burn and use memtest (http://www.memtest86.com/).
for ISO burning I recommend IMGBurn.
Solve : Office Outlook 2003 - continuing receiving the same e mails every few hours.?
Answer»
Hi folks,
I recently had a computer failure due to having 59 Trojans invading my computer even though I had a virus protection service in place.  I reinstalled the total operating system . I then had my internet provide set up my e mail accounts on Office Outlook taking remote control of my computer. This program had worked in the past without any problem.
After, I noticed that I was receiving multiple COPIES of the same e mails.  This continued about four or five times during the day, that I finally called Earthlink tech support.  They took control by remote of my computer to check the settings and then went to my web mail.  They did not see any duplicates in the web mail, they stated that some of my mail might be corrupted and so they made a few separate folders to ISOLATE them.  They then sent a test message and asked if  I  received any duplicates.  I said no, not now this happens after a few hours.  They said that they fixed my problem.  After a while I  continued to received more duplicates.  I called again, their statement was that these duplicates did not appear in my web mail and therefore it was not their problem but with my outlook program.  They suggested that I GO to Microsoft to find a solution.
I spent hours searching for a solution to this problem without any resolution on the Microsoft website.  I tried reinstalling this program and repairing it on the add/remove programs.  This did not work, then I reinstalling using the CD that I had, and this too failed.  I tried deleting my e mails in web mail but this did not help either.
I have a HP Compaq 6735B notebook computer XP Professional Service pack 3, processor is x86 family 17 model 3 stepping 1 authentic AMD Hewlett-Packard 68GTT Ver. F.10, 7/31/2009.
I would certainly appreciate if any one has an idea what I can do?  This is driving me crazy.  I hope I am giving all the information necessary to find a solution.  This is my FIRST time ever posting to a forum, your website was given to me by someone who uses your site.  Thanking you all for reading and perhaps offering any suggestions to how I can fix this problem.  First off, go to the regsitry, regedit32
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate, and then click the following registry entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\POP3Svc\Parameters\CheckPop3Tail
Note If the CheckPop3Tail registry value is not present, create it. To do so: a. Locate, and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\POP3Svc\Parameters
b. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
c. Type CheckPop3Tail, and then press ENTER.
4. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
5. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.
If that doesnt work, just delete the users mail box and recreate it. These are both known issues with microsoftWow!  I tried first to go to registry keys but had a time finding them.  So, I took you second solution to delete all my e mail addresses and then recreate them and  PERFETTO... It worked.  I did not respond this morning, because I was still not sure it the problem was fixed because the additional e mails usually appear again after a few hours.  However, you solution to my problem was clear precise and right on the mark!  Why I would like to know is why my internet provider so called tech support had not idea what was wrong, even there second level PERSON!  But you solved this problem that has been plaguing me for over 17 days!  bravo bravo bravo.. Thank you so much for your help.  My son, says that you folks are the best, and I must agree with him on this.
Grazie mille per tutto.. Thanks a lot.........what more can I say!  And also thank you for your speedy reply!  All the best to you!
Solve : Printer uninstalled??
Answer»
Windows automatically installed a security update on my computer this MORNING.  (running Windows XP).  Now suddenly my computer tells me that there is no printer installed.  When I TRY to install my printer I get the message "OPERATION couldn't be completed.  Print spooler SERVICE is not running."  I  have done nothing that would cause my printer to be uninstalled.  What's GOING on?  Is it related to the Windows update?
pablo46Click Start
right click on My Computer
select Manage
when the Computer Management window opens expand Services and Applications
select Services
scroll down to Print Spooler and right click on it
select properties
change the Startup type to Automatic
click Apply
click OK
make sure the Print Spooler is still selected and click Restart Service
Once the spooler is running again you should see your printer again.
Solve : CRASH due to missing HIDSERV.dll?
Answer»
My desktop has been crashing frequently and the Event Viewer shows "The HID Input Service service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified." A little research showed this is because the file hidserv.dll only appears in my registry in a couple of obscure places. I was able to download a hidserv.dll file and tried to register it in a couple of ways from the command prompt. First I used regsvr32.exe and got the error message "hidserv.dll was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file can not be registered." Tried several times with same result.
Then I tried using regasm.exe and always get the error "hidserv.dll is not a valid .net assembly."
Can anyone advise me how to register hidserv.dll? Or, short of that, how can I avoid these mysterious crashes. The first event that occurs just before the cursor freezes is "Unable to load C:\WINDOWS\System32\iprtrmgr.dll." That is followed by "The HID Input Service service
terminated...." So I guess the triggering event is related to my HP all-in-one printer. I did look in my HP installation CD and hidserv.dll is not there.
(As I'm sure you all know, HID stands for Human Interface Device, which certainly applies to my HP printer/scanner.)
Details: computer is running Windows XP with all UPDATES & service packs. 2.8 gigahertz, 2.5 GIGS memory, 166 gigs free hard drive space. Just installed Net Framework v 4.
Thanks for any help.
AlanIf it is a .NET thing, try to un install and re install the version of .NET you need.
Do you know EXACTLY which program requires the .NET stuff?
Is "not a valid net assembly" what you mean by a ".NET thing?" Actually I installed v 4 of net framework TWO times. Once a few days ago after which I had the same problem registering then again yesterday after doing a Restore, requiring that I install net framework v 4 again. Both times the registration failed using regasm. Are you suggesting I uninstall/reinstall again?Installation of the .NET package should not require manual registration of components in most cases. The recommended practice is to fully remove a faulty package and then repair any other errors and install the package again. That is one of the reasons they give specific details about un-install issues.
