Solve : hand me down computer web pages uses previous owner's email?

Answer»

I have a HAND me down computer that I am trying to CLEAN up so I can give to someone else to use.  Currently when I send a web PAGE to someone else, it uses the previous owner's email.  How do I get the email address erased from IE?The email address isn't in IE, it's in your email client. Open the email client and DELETE all old accounts.A good idea for all 2nd hand PC's is to do a complete wipe and a clean install of the OS...THANKS for the suggestions!  I'll give it a try.

Solve : SDHC card reader will not read card in XP, but it did in Vista?? Any idea??

Answer»

I had Vista installed on my Acer  5610z laptop and I was able to read my SDHC card, I now have XP and when i put in the SDHC card in the internal card raader nothing happens. I downloaded the drivers from Acer website for XP card reader and still nothing. I know the card reader is capable of reading the SDHC card, because it was working with Windows Vista. I tried everything and still nothing. Anyone have an idea or suggestion.
Maybe if you told us the MAKE and model of your card reader and whether it is internal or external, instead of putting all your question in the title and just a sad smiley where the information should be, you might get an answer.
Same computer CHANGED from Vista to XP?  Since you installed the XP drivers for you laptop's card reader, it should just work.He hasn't told us the SIZE of the SDHC card that is not read in XP, but this may be relevant

That's real interesting, you could be right.  I use 16GB SDHC cards all the time, but all my computers are WinXP-SP3.  BTW, update only applies to SP2, so not needed for SP3.

Solve : I can't get my dsl modem to connect?

Answer»

I just reinstalled the operating system on my computer (Windows 98SE) and I am trying to reinstall my Actiontec DSL Modem (with Wireless Gateway) and connect to the internet. I can't connect. The modem installs, (it's CONNECTED by a USB to my computer) MSN installs, but the internet light on my modem is red (should be green) and I get the message that my modem can't connect to the internet. I've called my DSL provider, and he had me look in device manager and there is an exclamation point next to Internet connection Sharing, click on PROPERTIES and it SAYS the NDIS.VXD device loader for this device could not load the device driver. Code 2. So I click update driver, put my windows 98 cd in, and the wizard says the best driver for this device is already installed. I've uninstalled the modem, reinstalled it several times, still the same thing. I put my 56k modem back in my computer and I can connect to the internet through it, but not my DSL modem. Can someone please help me, my DSL provider said there is some file or something missing on my computer and I have to install whatever it is on my computer to make it work. But he didn't know what file or driver. My modem worked before on this same computer with the same operating system a week ago. It's a fresh operating system, what's the problem? Oh yea, one more thing, I went to Add/Remove Programs and clicked on windows setup, internet tools, and tried to check the internet connection sharing box (as it was unchecked, which is weird since I know I checked it to be installed when I installed my os system again.) and it won't let me check it, I get a error message saying that I need to set up my Network Hardware first.

Diagnose/troubleshooting:

Uninstalled the modem software, rebooted, installed it again.  I've unplugged the power cord to the modem to reset it.  I've done all this several times.  I even reinstalled the OS again, thinking it was faulty the first time or somethingI'll take a stab at it...is your DCHP ENABLED on your router and is the IP address valid for the DSL provider?You may need to configure your Internet settings before being able to connect to the Internet. Contact your provider and have them walk you through the steps that you need to take.go to the device manager ......you know where that is/// control panel//click the  system. the icon....now scroll down the list.....to the usb host controllers... click the properties tab now ...click the advanced tab.....and uncheck the disable usb detection error box......see if it works.....boy have i done this a lot what i did was disconnect it from the pc then the router then the modem wait 15 seconds and reconnet in reverse order this has HELPED me get all 6 of mine online {kids and wife and step-daughter get real grumpy}

Solve : After reformat, computer gets stuck on XP logo?

Answer»

My Acer Netbook wouldn't boot past the windows logo screen. Safe mode didn't work, so I reformatted the HD with a backup disc. It STILL won't boot past the windows logo. Any suggestions to get it to start back up. I don't need any data off of it, I'm actually pretty sure that the reformat went through, but now it's stuck on the Windows XP logo screen. Any help with this would be appreciated.

Other info:
Windows XP
Acer Aspire One D250
Don't really know what else is relevant, but let me know and I can find more info if needed. What do you mean your pretty sure the format went through? Did you get any errors? Did you get to the part where it restarts and then you enter your time zone, product key, name etc?

Also, why did you use a CD? My D260 has a restore partition. It should be the same on the D250. To access the restore partition you press alt + F10 at boot. You still might be able to do it this way unless you deleted the partition when you were installing from the CD. If you cant get it to work, make sure that the d2d recovery is enabled in bios. What do you mean you reformatted with a backup disk?I did NOT get to the part where I have to re-enter time zone, product key, etc. The reason why I used a backup disc is because I was unable to access the restore partition. When pressing Alt+F10 while booting up, the machine just freezes completely. I ran the restore disc (which I created the first time I BOOTED up the computer) through a USB CD/DVD drive which I forced the computer to boot to.

When I attempted to reformat, it ran through the whole process (~15 minutes) and then said something to the effect of "reformat complete, click OK to restart." When I did that, it booted up like normal, went to the windows logo screen, and stayed there for a good 15 minutes of doing nothing. That's all I can get the computer to do.

Thank you for your assistance, it is much appreciated. Are you sure you SAW the word format or reformat as opposed to installation?I'd run diagnostics on the hard drive to see if it's the culprit.

Go here and get the diagnostics disk for your hard drive:

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287JJ, I can't figure out how to download the right diagnostic program.

Allan, I'm going to repeat the process and list everything it says/asks to see if that can help troubleshoot this at all.

1) Acer eRecovery Management screen asks for the language in which to view instructions.
2) Next screen I select "Completely Restore System to Factory Defaults". I then click next through a warning that this will delete everything on the hard drive and confirm the hard drive name and partition size.
3) 2 progress bars appear with the message "please wait while files load"
4) after reaching "100%", it switches to a screen that says restore progress with the following fields: Source (C:\IMAGES_TMP_DIR\POP0104YP2E00C01.SWM), Destination (HARDDISK0\PARTITION2), Speed, elapsed time/time left, and progress bar.
5) A DOS window opens that says: X:\RyTools|NAPP7.exe at the title bar. the TEXT inside the window says "Updating Patch Files Now.....Please Wait for several minutes"
6) the DOS window closes and the Acer eRecovery Management Window COMES back to the foreground and says "Restore finished. Please press "OK" to restart this computer."

After I click ok, the computer boots up and gets to the windows logo screen and the progress bar on the bottom keeps "loading" indefinitely.Okay thank you. It's important we don't confuse terms. You did not reformat, you restored a factory image.

Now, what led up to this? In other words, why did you need to do the restore in the first place?Allan,

My computer wouldn't load up past the windows logo screen, so I attempted to restore. This did not solve the problem as it still won't boot past the logo screen. Safe mode doesn't work either...It goes through a bunch of DOS commands and stops at agpCPQ.sys. Basically, my computer was freezing during boot up, and my attempts to restore didn't accomplish anything.Well, if the problem persists after a factory restore I'd think in terms of a hardware problem. I suggest the following:

1) Boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r. If you don't have an XP CD you can download a recovery console .iso, burn it, and boot to it (http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?/topic/150212-boot-to-recovery-console-wo-xp-cd/)
2) Download and run memtest (http://www.memtest.org/)

Let's see where we are after that.

Thanks for any help,
TimRight-click on the file - open with - choose the program and put a tick in "always use this program for this file type".I tried right cliclkng on the red x where the picture is but I don't get that option.  Now what.  You have to set a "file ASSOCIATION" in order to view the image.  Go to the Control Panel and open Folder Options.  Select the File Types tab and scroll down to \ HIGHLIGHT "JPG" and it should describe which program is set on your machine to open the .jpg files.  Mine is set to Irfanview but you can put in the program of your CHOICE.  Click on the Change button to view recommended programs that are already on your computer.

Solve : TCP/IP missing?

Answer»

Sorry this is LONG, I think you need background info. I have a base computer with a wireless router. I have a second desktop computer and a LAPTOP both connected wirelessly to the base computer.  (although they are not set up to share, another problem entirely!) All 3 computers use windows XP, I have a high speed cable connection.  When I am not at home, I use my cell phone as a modem to connect to the INTERNET.  On occasion, while visiting family in NH, I use dial up   .  This has all been working fine, until last night. I got back from using the dial up, and now I cannot connect to the internet via my wireless laptop.  It says I have an excellent signal. When i look at the status, then look at the support, it lists the address type, IP address, subnet mast & default gateway all as .
I am THINKING this is my problem??
So I guess my question is: first, IS this my problem? and secondly, how/where can I FIND this information then where/how do I put it?

Solve : Outlook Junk E-mail?

Answer»

in OUTLOOK if you want to block a domain (any.com) you have to go to junk e-mail options, go to the drop down and then manually INPUT the domain AND remember to click apply. Lots of my spam is from domains that I have no interest in getting anything from and would like a quick way of blocking them - in fact, so I don't even have later delete the e-mail from deleted items. Seems Microsoft does NOT want to make it easy to block spam for some REASON?SET up some message rules.

Solve : Remote Desktop Resolution?

Answer»

Having an ISSUES with a workstation regarding Remote Desktop not filling the entire screen when set to FULL Screen resolution.

This is a web-based launcher, but I can't seem to find any configuration files locally so before spending a LOT of money calling the vendor's tech support, I thought I'd see if you guys have any ideas. See Pic.

I would DUMB dameware.

This happens went you have a mismatch in screen resolution. You have to drop your colors down to 16 bit and then try to adjust the screen size on the client machine from inside dameware.

Well, it looks like it's stuck on 640x480 regardless of running full screen or windowed RESOLUTIONS. There are about 20 of these workstations that RDP into the web server that don't have any issues at all. I'm just stumped as to where it gets its configuration.

"I would dumb dameware" Typo  dumb = dump

Try to up your workstation resolution as a TEST. after that try to open dameware and check the client screen sizes and see if you can get any bigger sizes.

Solve : Formatting C: but error on C Drive?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

I’d really appreciate if anyone can shine some light on my PROBLEM unable to boot.

It all started last night when I tried to reinstall Windows. Naturally I’d want to format it first. So before I did that, I ran “Scandisk,” and not paying much attention to its msgs, I let it “fix errors” whenever it found any. After Scandisk ended, I REBOOTED and then I wasn’t able to boot anymore.

Since I haven’t changed anything I went back to Scandisk, and noticing that there’s the warning msg saying that "an NTFS system can not be checked with Scandisk or else fixing the error will make the system not bootable." However, I installed my current version of Windows 2 yrs ago and remembered that it was a FAT32, but am not sure 100%… so I am suspecting if this could be a possibility of scandisk a NTFS?

I then exited the Scandisk and tried a “dir” to list the files in C, to my surprise, it’s empty! Only saying 10G of space was free, but I know that’s wrong because I have much more space than that and that I have all sorts of folders under C it couldn’t possibly be empty.

Now that it won’t boot, I tried making C a system disk by typing “sys c: “ under DOS.
After the system files were successfully transferred, I rebooted, and tried “Dir” again, now that I see all the chkdsk.001, chkdsk.002…etc files GENERATED by scandisk and at the end of the list, I saw some “gibberish” folder name that’s not even characters on the keyboard. I think my master boot record has been ruined by Scandisk.

I then tried “format C:” and after the line “Checking System Type,” it displayed an error msg “Invalid Device Parameters from Device Driver.” I think it couldn't recognize my C partition and its file table and hence won't let me format!!

I consider myself to be an intermediate level PC user. This 7200 RPM, 80G Seagate drive is less than a year old and I haven’t been pushing it that hard, I don’t play games, so I don’t think any physical sector damage is causing this. My question however is:

1. If it won’t let me format c via “format” command, is there another tool that’ll allow me to format the partition and reconstruct the file table to make it readable again? Partition D has all my important DATA, now that it’s not readable either! Is it possible to restore it once I reinstall Windows on C drive?

2. I ’ve thought about deleting partition C and recreate it, but will that do anything to my D drive?

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Jeff

...I installed my current version of Windows 2 yrs ago...

What version would that be?  Please tell us.
Well, as it appears to be NTFS you should boot directly to the XP CD and format the drive using the CD. You need to press R to get to the recovery console.

When you have the recovery console LOADED type help for a list of commands.

Other than format you will find fixboot, fixmbr and  bootcfg /rebuild.

Solve : One computer with 2 keyboards mice and screens?

Answer»

I'm running windowsXP Home on a 2.1GHZ QuadCore with 2G of RAM

I already have two screens plugged into the GRAPHICS card and a third on a USB/screen adaptor.

I would like to be able to connect 2 keyboards, mice and screens (one set in one room, the other set in another). The reason for doing this is so I can record into the computer in a separate room away from the computers fans and hard drive noise.

The existing key board and mouse are both PS2 . Do I just add a USB key board and mouse? Would another USB screen adapter be the best way to add the extra screen?

Regards BishkaThe piratical length of USB cable, if of the highest quality, is about 25 feet. The same could be said about a VGA cable.
IMHO extending a PS/2 cable is not a good idea. I could be WRONG, never tried it. Quote from: bishka on January 19, 2011, 07:59:56 AM

I don't know whether you can connect two different types of mice and keyboards at the same time. I've never done or tried that.  I believe a KVM switch is really the best solution here.  If you buy one, MAKE sure it can function in reverse - that is, a single PC can be connected to multiple monitors, keyboards, and mice. Sure you can. I have both a bluetooth and a ps2 mouse connected to my primary home system for those rare occasions when the bluetooth fails and I need a working mouse to navigate. And when I used a bluethooth keyboard (which lasted about a week before I tossed it) I also had a wired keyboard connected for the same reason.

Solve : Microsoft Word Document Issue?

Answer»

There is only one Word document that I am having trouble with. The document contains only 3 pages of info. I have viewed that with "Print Preview" to be certain. The document prints just fine except that a fourth blank sheet comes out of the printer. This is the ONLY document that it HAPPENS to. I have tried to delete information, copy & paste to a new document, deleting the last bit of information on the document & reentering it,...Not sure what else I should do...Any thoughts?

KevinI've had this happen many times over the years and have never been able to figure out why. But I never considered it a big deal - just one of those things Normally, I would not consider this to be such an issue however; I am attaching email documents for applications for employment & sending an ATTACHMENT with a blank piece of page would pretty much any hopes of employment from that corporation...As long as the blank page doesn't appear in the document, the recipient will never know if the reason for the blank page is on their end or yours. And who's to say their copies will actually print the extra page anyway? I REALLY wouldn't worry about it.

BTW, I can assure you beyond any DOUBT whatsoever that the hiring companies and search firms are far more interested in the content of your resume than whether or not it prints with an extra blank page ...I will hope so....I think that I will email the attachment to a friend & see if they receive 3 or 4 pages...Thanks for your input! Solve : how to restore the admin account on windows Xp home edition?

Answer»

I have accidentally deleted the admin account on XP, I have the original XP CD, how do I restore it PLEASE?.The admin account does not appear in user acoount in control panel, nor does it appear in Safe mode

Does ANYONE have the tech savvy to help please You cannot delete the admin account. Tell us EXACTLY what happened and what the current problems are.Have you tried pressing Ctrl + ALT + Delete TWICE, and then entering "Administrator" and the password?Ok,there is NO admin account anymore, I looked in Control Panel, have looked in Safe mode. I tried pressing ctrl+alt+del .a login screen comes up regardless. It just says user, and then we type in our password and hit Enter and we are in. I typed the word administrator and the password, Windows told me the details were INCORRECT, later it told me there was a account restriction. There is just a limited account. So we are UNABLE to load new software, defrag etc.

What would you suggest now please ?

Solve : Repair/restore registry on slave drive?

Answer»

Hello

I've a problem after a chipset driver update, and I am now without use of keyboard or mouse.

The keyboard is working in bios, but once XP has loaded it tries installing new hardware to which it requires me to use the mouse and keyboard which are not working as the drivers aren't loaded. Crazy.

Anyway, I've tried safe mode etc. to no avail, and what I would like to know is how to restore the messed OS whilst using it as a slave from another drive with XP loaded.

Thankfully I made a system restore point on the messed drive before the driver update - can I somehow utilise this system restore point from the temporary drive to restore the registry on the messed drive to it's former self?

Thanks for any help1) What is on this slave drive ?
2) If it has an OS system installed you REALISE it will not work on another machine...correct ? ?
3) What is it you want to do with this drive ? QUOTE from: patio on January 17, 2011, 02:09:50 PM

3) What is it you want to do with this drive ?
I think I know what he means:
1)  He want to take the bad drive & slave it on another computer.
2)  I think he does know, because he intends to slave it.
3)  He wants to restore the bad drive while it's slaved.  We know that can't be done.

The bigger issue is why the mouse & keyboard only work in the BIOS & not when Windows boots?Based on the title, depending on what type of registries(unknown) you want to perform or make repairs on a slaved hard drive. If its a Windows corrupt then use the OS CD to restore/repair on the machine that was installed. Other than that on a Slave hard drive, I doubt it. I now have xp installed on a £10 ide slave so that I can view the main pc's sata disks - one of which has the installation of windows that I'd like to repair; the reason being that of the two drives, the sata hdd with xp is partitioned, and I don't fancy taking the risk of losing the data that's on it.

Is there a way that I can run a system restore on the slave drive, or maybe utilise the system restore data?

Thanks again

Help Please
Windows XP Home; Works 6.0; Office XP Pro; !.0 Meg RAM;
I was trying to create something useing MS Works. The create wizard seemed to be very slow, so I re-clicked the 'next' a few times. None of the wizard offerings looked good, so I decided to close Works and create what I needed in Word. Having closed Works, a new instance of Works re-launched itself. I closed it, only for it to re-launch. I used Ctrl Alt Delete to bring up the Task Manager and closed Works from here- but once again Works reloaded. This was repeated a few times but Works kept reloading, so I swiched off mains power and rebooted. From the log on screen, I clicked my name, After a delay my desktop apeared - but just my wallpaper, no taskbar, no shortcuts, nothing. I have tried System Restore - but this does not bring back my desktop. The other users settings are unaffected. So Can anyone advise how I can get my desktop back?
Your help will be much appreciated.
Graham.if u have created a boot disk this is where it comes in handy if not then there are several ways to restore .An easy way is to put the cd in and reformat but if u have anything on the cpu u dont WONT to lose than this wont work. if u dont have the cd handy. then u can  take the tower off and this is something u do with the cpu unplugged ,there is 3 litlle i mean little prong like spikes about half an inch with a little plastic cover over too of them u can lift it and slip it over the right 2 pins and it will reset it to the manufactor origanal settings other then that i dont know any other way but IM just a newbeie i dont know jack 1. Before Windows XP loads, press F8

Solve : File Explorer responding VERY slowly when not connected to my work network?

Answer»

My work laptop (Lenovo 510W / XP Pro SP3 / Intel Core i7 CPU / 3 GB RAM / NVidia Quadro FX 880M ) behaves fine when connected to the work network.  However, when I'm offline, or on a different network, file operations in explorer become painfully slow.  Like, sometimes just clicking on a file will cause the hourglass for several seconds before it appears as selected.  If I connect to the VPN, however, the problem goes away.

During these slow file operations, the task manager shows 99% idle, and there is plenty of memory available.  I do not have offline files enabled or anything of that nature.

I have submitted tickets and talked to a couple people in my IT department, and they are stumped as well, though it seems other people have made similar complaints.  I have done some googling, but haven't been able to find a solution.

Here's a list of SW I'm running that might be relevant:
Malware Protection: Trend Micro OfficeScan 10.0 SP1
VPN Client: Check Point SecureClient

I'm a software engineer with a bachelors degree in CS, but my Windows admin skills are not that great.  Any troubleshooting help would be appreciated. This normally happens because something on your machine (like shortcuts or file sync) is trying to find your network. When your not connected it still tries and and tries. When you try to open something it has to time out.

Are you part of a domain? Does it have some policy for file sync? Really this would be a guessing game until you found out what is trying to connect to your domain.

Yes, I'm part of a domain.  I'm not aware of any file sync policy, and the IT guys didn't mention anything like that.  I do know that explorer's offline files feature is disabled.  Do you have a suggestion for how to find out what is trying to connect to my domain?  Some kind of network diagnostics software or something?HJT Log, in case it is helpful.

Solve : Computer refuses to shutdown?

Answer»

My computer in the last week or so has been freezing when i try and shut it down through the start menu.  I can ctrl+alt+delete and shut it down that way, but when i do it goes to the blue "windows is shutting down" screen and remains there for what seems like 5-10mins.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.Operating system?
Is it fully updated?Windows Xp, and yea it should be fully updated.  Should i try re-installing the newest update?  I'm not sure this would be the cause, but around the time of this problem occuring my computer was automatically updating windows and a picture fell and unplugged the power.  Is it POSSIBLE the PROCESS was interupted and is the cause of the problem?I'd go back to the windows update site & let it check for you. INSTALL the critical updates then carefully read the recommended ones to see if you need them.
Don't install updated drivers from there, go to the manufacturer's website for that. Are there any programs that are still running when you attempt to shutdown the computer? If yes, what are these?I De-fraged my C-drive and RAN some diagnostics which helped.  I got the latest update as WELL and upon shutdown was pleasantly delighted to see it didnt freeze.  It was still slightly slower to shutoff but I think its because it said it was installing during shutdown.  Thanks for your quick repsonses guys  .

Solve : My computer is drastically slow?

Answer» http://www.majorgeeks.com/  load of gear here have a look.......and cheer up.......  ZCA81.....It is my opinion for what its worth that you should spend some time and simply remove all the crap spyware , malware and trojans from your system .......
You have reasonable amount of memory and you processor looks decent .
You didnt mention which O/S your using ......if your using XP .......the first thing I would do is .........make sure you have SP2 and all other updates installed.   Then I would go into the control panel / folder options and make sure that the hidden folders are displayed .
I would then D/L M/S Antispyware .... , Ad-Adware SE personal .  Then I would shut down the system restore feature ............ Then I would delete all temp internet files , Cookies  and History .  Then I would reboot into safe mode and run your anti virus program , then M/S Antispware and then Ad-Aware ..........
Deleting anything thats found .............
BTW ........what brand of hard drive are you using ?
Then I would reboot back into normal and see how things load ......
It might even be a good idea to D/L and scan with hijackthis ( even if your not infected with a hijacker......it is very good at locating trojans )
Do you have some sort of REGISTRY cleaner installed ?
Formatting is an option ........but only as a last resort .

I just got a rather scary message saying. "Files that are requierd for windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognised versions " Which sound dodgy.

Have scanned with adware and found nothing have cleaned registry. Spybot and disk defrag wont even load anymore. Will send you a log of hijack this if thats ok cause I can never understand it.
Thanks for continuing help.Have you installed the programs that I recommended in my previous post?

You may also wish to use the following scanner:

Trend Micro Free online virus scannerIve scanned with AVG and found nothing, the first time I tried the computer crashed halfway through. Spybot S+D wont load anymore.

Im starting to get really worried this is something wrong with the hardware. What should be my next course of action?
Thanks
Hold down the f8 on boot up and scan for the trojans etc...also disconect to the net while doing so.....follow instuctions given....and then follow dsl advice........How can I check that windows is in full working order. Im starting to get messages like
"Files that are requierd for windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognised versions"
and one at start up saying Invalid boot .ini booting fromm c://windows which I have seen.

Managed to run my security stuff in safe mode and found 2 data mining cookies but no virus, how much would that have effected my system?Spybot now seems to take about 5 minutes to load. This is not normal. I once had about 5 virus at the same time and the PC ran much faster than this. Not much. Data mining cookies are simply tracking cookies that keep track of your serving habbits. They are the main cause of spam.

The programs you have installed should be configured to work more efficiently. Default installation configurations will not always protect your system entirely.

You have been provided with enough LINKS to very good software, I suggest that you look into installing these when you get a chance. Perhaps you have simply allowed programs to become corrupted and installed software that modifies Windows files. This can be harmful, but does not necessary mean Spyware, viruses or Trojan Horses. Therefore, the applications you use to prevent such threats may not recognize them.

I advise you to use the following:

WinPatrol
HijackThis

Post the HijackThis log for us to see.To find Trojans use SpyBot SD, AdAware SE & use SpywareBlaster which is a preventative program. All of them are freeware.

For a more in depth search use Spyware Doctor. You can use it unregistered but you need to know how to edit the registry.

Tried everything that was sugested but found that there seemed to be a vital PART of windows missing ( how did that happen???) Ive formatted my hard drive and now everthing works again, Thanks all the help,
Z. C-AI wish more people would take that initiative.

Now be certain that you take PRECAUTIONARY measures!

Download and install the latest Windows updates and install the the following programs:

AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP HOME and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

Or the programs of your choosing. However, be certain that they are well trusted and properly configured.
your system has some spyware Quote

No problem. Now is a good time to make a drive image of your fresh install so that you have a backup to restore with. I keep one on CDRs and a running backup on an archive partition.

Solve : video resolution and "Illegal Operation"?

Answer»

It is great to visit such an exciting forum.

I  now have 98 (not the SE) installed and only 2.1 GB H disk with P2 processor and 128 MB RAM.

Previously the OS was 98 SE.

I reformatted it due to some problems and then install 98 only (not SE) and divided the Hdisk into two partition 1 GB each.

after that i found my video screen resolution ( through desktop properties--settings) is only showing 2colors and 16 colors.

then i call my computer manufacturue and he installed the video driver . then the resolution becomes OK. I copied the video driver in D: drive.

My question is if i format my c drive again and reinstall win 98 first edition shall i be able to install the video driver for proper screen resolution from the D: drive?

------------------------------------------------------

next topic:

whenever i run opera after two or three minutes of surfing i see that popping dialogue box "this program has performed an illegal operartion and will be shut down". If i close this my browser's all opened pages close and wheni again run opera it again comes soon. I uninstall and reinstall opera and still the problem persists. i run slimbrowser , it is hppening there also.

I have these memory configuration:

at c: drive

capacity 999mb, used 642mb, free 357 mb

at d: drive

capacity 0.98 GB, used 993 MB, free 18.4 MB

If you consider D: drive 0.98 GB = 980 MB then how it is showing  used 993 MB??

----------------------

ThanksWell is a waste of ram on a 2.1 gig.
win98 takes up 768mb....even with skining it......

ok.......what did you use to  partiton the h/d with.....

opera....plugin ..for ie....yes..../no.....or did you uninstall ie...The required space may vary from 120 MB to 295 MB, depending on your computer's configuration and the options you choose to install.

Yes or you can easily download them from the net.

Do all the usual scans.
Sometimes a badly written webpage can also cause this.
Click at your own risk, it will probably crash you.

Computers COUNT to a base of 2, we humans use a base of 10. Don't worry about the differences, you only need to know that the numbers are not exact.

What does the link do, Fed?Thanks EVERYBODY and esp Fed for replying..... I didn't clicked but TYPED that link, nothing happened.. the page remained blank.

Solve : Can't logon, no users to click on...?

Answer»

I have 2 problems. One) I am trying to run Windows repair from the XP PRO disk. It ASKS for the admin password. This is a problem because I don't know it. The computer was abandoned and was given to me. I was searching for ways to reset or delete the admin pw including downloading ebcd (emergency boot cd). It doesn't work, apparently with xp if you can boot with your xp disk. I foolishly decided in frustration, to nose around where a novice doesn't belong and TRY a few things myself... Problem Two) I disabled admin user in Control Panel/Admin Tools/Comp Mgmt/Sys Tools/Local Users/Users thinking that was a "good idea".... right... the next time I turned on the computer, it goes to Windows Logon screen and asks me to click on user to logon to but..... there isn't anyone to choose from. So, I have to ctl/alt/del to get anything, which of course is, admin password. I can either hit escape or hit enter to get into Windows but, only as a "guest acct". So, I can't undo the dumb thing I did! So,...... any IDEAS? Suggestions?..... I know what I shouldn't have done... is there anything I CAN do? Thanks so much in advance for any help offered.   I would install a fresh copy windows.

You say you have an XP pro disk. Did the computer have XP pro on it? Does the computer have the product key sticker on it?Hi. Thank you for your reply. Yeah, reinstalling windows is definitely looking like the best option. I downloaded Mozy, which has enough room for me to back up my docs, photos and music (pretty much all I use the computer for) but, it hangs up just before it's finished. There are photos and docs of my children that are irreplaceable so I have to put those on disk. I'm sure you understand my hesitation though, reinstalling all the programs I have, some which I'll have to go and find and download again. It's just such a pain. I just had all the programs and settings etc the way I wanted them. Just had a minor glitch, which I'm sure repair would have taken care of. But, I guess I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and reinstall. Darn it!    Was hoping there was another download like ebcd, which was recommended here, that would help me bypass admin. But, now I can only logon as a guest and can't do anything! Ughh!    Thanks again for responding. Take care and God bless. -SSlave Drive Tutorial

Solve : Booting XP from USB drive?

Answer»

I have Windows 7 x64 on a laptop and I also have an 8GB flash drive (USB 2.0). I want to put XP (32bit) on the flash drive, plug it into the laptop, and boot up XP (just like it was installed on the HDD) and also be able to install programs while in XP onto the flash drive. Is this possible, how do I do it? Thanks! Not easy. XP wants a real HDD to boot.
Here is a good alternative. Less work.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspxWindows is designed by default to be installed on a fixed, internal drive. Like Geek says, you could store a virtual PC image on a USB drive and run it with virtual PC software installed in Windows 7 on the laptop. In any case, even if you could install XP on a flash drive, unless you disabled virtual memory, the XP swap activity would kill the flash drive pretty soon. And if you have no virtual memory at all, XP acts really weird. But you can't do it, so that is just theoretical.

Thanks. I THINK I will try to multiboot with XP instead. When I put the XP install disc in the laptop, and it starts loading files, it eventually shows me a blue screen, with STOP CODE 0x0000007B.

Can I put another hard drive in the laptop, install XP on it, and then put that same HDD in an external enclosure, and boot up with it in the internal enclosure (with USB)? Quote from: ARK on January 21, 2011, 03:40:21 PM

I just wan't to run some XP programs on this laptop, they don't work on Windows 7.Why ? ?
I havent found an App that does not run on Win7.

You can use VMWare Player which is free.
Thanks, when I try to download, I always get "Service Temporarily Unavailable". So hopefully it will become available pretty soon.

I found this, seems like it would work.

Also, I just downloaded VMware Player 3.1.3 for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows from vmware.com (about 2 minutes ago)

I don't understand, I visited this page:

Salmon Trout was undoubtedly referring to the "how-to-setup-and-get-xp-mode-on-windows-7-home-premium-and-basic" link; I'm fairly certain that you only get the extra XP license for use with XP mode on those versions of Windows 7 that allow for it.

Personally, I think jumping for XP Mode is a bit preemptive; have you tried the various compatibility settings? Any chance of you determining what these particular programs are?

The programs are:
MapObjects
Orthophoto

Solve : xp is acting up. keeps on restarting every time i run something?

Answer»

I've been troubleshooting this since yesterday and this isn't my first issue. To give you a summary of my devices, check details below. my main concern is on my mom's old desktop by the way.

item A: mom's old desktop
P4vmm2
one 512 ram and one 128
40gb IDE HDD
win xp

item B: spares
an intel mobo
512 ram

item C: my personal desktop whose working properly
160 IDE HDD
250 Sata HDD
2gb ram
win 7

basically, all i want to do is to fix my mom's computer. it had a virus almost a year ago so they stopped using it and since they badly need an additional pc for their business, im trying to fix it.
steps:

1. to make things easy, i decided to reformat her 40gb IDE HDD. on my journey to that, i had a hard time with the re-installation of the OS. the first OS was win7, after deleting the partitions and copying of new windows files, it suddenly hangs up.

2. i've tried it 3times and gave me same result so i created a new win7 copy just to make sure its not the cd then tried it again, still same result.

3.then i used xp installer thinking it might be the version of OS thats malfunctioning. i used win xp, win xp sp1 and win xp sp2. on RAMDOM parts, its giving me an error on the installation or hangs up at different sections. usually on driver related sections.

4. i then replaced my ide cables. i replaced it with the cables that i'm using with my personal desktop to make sure the cords are properly working. i also placed my cmos battery on that old pc to make sure--its only about 3mos old battery. still the same result.

5. i started doubting its a mobo issue so i removed everything and tested the two ram slots with my 1ram cards--one at a time. mobo never act up at any point.

6. to test the 40gb HDD and the dvdr, i hooked it up to my personal desktop and installed OS. i was able to install win 7 and win xp sp2(one at a time) on that kind of setup and was able to use it for at least 1hour each. maybe my mom's desktop is just so slow, i thought causing the installation errors. what i did next is to test the 40gb HDD with OS on my mom's old mobo. both win7 and xp's gave me restarts after the start ups. totally no BSOD's or errors.

---------i've been repeatings troubleshooting steps like transferring of pc parts and re-installation attempts of OS on different events in between the steps that i wrote, then decided to stick with win xp sp2 created on my personal hdd and separating my personal pc with the damaged one----------

7. when i was about to gave up, i planned to use my spare working mobo. during the tweaking of my spare mobo and my mom's mobo, i had a screen output issue. so i just set everything back to its original settings then replaced the 128ram of my mom to my spare 512ram. that very instant i said ill give this a SHOT one last time to see if theres any progress, the xp was able to finish the start up process and showed a lot of pop up about hardware wizard. it gives me a warning that MICROSOFT strongly recommends me to stop the driver installation of those. there are times that im the one who initiates the restart after the driver installation then gives me few restarts before finishing the win start ups. and there are also times when the xp automatically restart few times.

8. it takes me about 5-10 auto restart before showing options to safeboot etc. what ever option i select, it never push through but every after that event, windows successfully finish start up part. then the hardware wizard goes on and on and on. no driver is properly detected. i played with it for few hours, attempting to install uninstall and disable some devices on the device manager. then finally the network adapter was detected and i was able to hook up to the internet.

9. since windows now started to open, i tried installing things but always fail. i tried "sfc /scannow" installing/disabling devices detected by hardware wizard, installing chrome, adobe reader and anti-virus softwares but always end up either the pc auto restarts or gives me an error msg that the installer downloaded ENCOUNTERED an error and cant push through the installation.

10. so now, when i opened the pc and let it do nothing, greater chance that it wont act up. doing restarts hoping the old pc would auto detect and cure itself =(

i HOPE somebody would seriously help me. 2 things i suspect:

The 128 stik of RAM is bad...

You need the original Drivers for that machine from the MBoard manuf. site...

Solve : Can not get on the internet.?

Answer»

Hello All,

Here is the problem I am having. It has caused much frustration in the last 24 hours as I have no idea what to try next.

I have 2 Panasonic CF-29 these are the Toughbooks. They are running windows XP. They have cool features for the time they came out like resistive touchscreens.

Reinstalling IS NOT an option

Anyways.

One of them gets error code 39 on ALL networking devices.
I am even unable to install a usb eathernet adapter due to driver issues.

First thing I did was use the PROGRAM called double driver to copy the drivers from the working computer to the non working computer. This failed. Although they restored successfully, nothing changed. I then attempted to manually install the drivers from panasonics website and I am still receiving the same error code.

I even tried to uninstall one of the drivers completely but it will not let me.

Any HELP on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT:

I am an administrator (forgot to mention that) so I do not think I am running into permission issues.

I did what few scans I could w/o updating including one off of UBCD.  UBCD DETECTED my hardware fine and it appeared to be working however I did not browse the internet on it.
I tried to run combofix but it will not let me because AVG is in stalled and removing it is unfortunately not an option.

Solve : Batch file which searches for the keywords?

Answer» HI

echo off

for /f "tokens=* delims= " %%a in ('dir /b/s D:\sba81\siebsrvr\log\*.log') do (
find "Error " < %%a >> Error.txt
)

I need to enhance this bach file such that "It should ignore the keywords i MENTION in the loop and output only the lines which are not containing the mentioned keywords in the loop"

Explanation :

I need to specify some 30 keywords in the loop to ignore if the batch file finds those words while searching files. Because those are ignorable errors. So it should ignore those words containing lines and it should copy all the lines which doesn't contain those keywords to the output file.

Please READ clearly above requirement once again and give me enhanced solution for the batch file i have given on top.

thanks a LOT in advance

Solve : Windows installer box pop up?

Answer»

I have windows xp (windows 7). I am a beginner. When I click my mouse a rectangular box pops up on the screen..It says "WINDOWS INSTALLER" "Preparing To Install". I've used 8 virus scans, and a friend said I should push these buttons " ctrl, del,& alt all at same time then go to task mgr and push" end program". I did that too. This pop up appears even if i am not online! If I am playing a game it takes over and connects to the internet! And with each click, when I do get online ,here it comes again!  Thank you! Blueridgelady. p.s. I've put up with this Devil since September! I've also used SYSTEM restore .Go to Windows SERVICES and look for Windows Installer. Right-click and choose PROPERTIES, start-up type and change to Manual, click Apply. If it did'nt work, Go to Start-->Run-->type msconfig,Ok-->Under System Configuration Utility, go to Services tab-->Look for Windows installer(Check first the status if its running or stopped). If its running, disable it and click apply. You may be required to reboot.Hi Jason! THANK YOU! for helping me. I tried to do the steps you provided but could NOT completely understand them . I kept searching-- on " EHOW" they had instructions and I  did the steps .  Then I did a reboot.   A notice box came up and wanted me to restore it! SHOULD I? This was 5 minutes ago. When i rebooted and used my mouse to  go online,  usually I have to push cancel on the POP_UP at LEAST 6 times  to get rid of that pop up  BUT  THIS TIME it tried to come up but went back off the screen!!! Praise the Lord! Maybe now I can ENJOY looking for my ancestors again. I am trying to do my family history online and really have enjoyed it until Sept, then it kept getting worse. I was about to GIVE UP! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH! You are kind!  Sincerely, THANKFUL Blueridgelady.Well, I'm not sure on what steps you are REFERRING but I'm glad you got it all fixed and thanks for letting us know.

Have you somehow ran into the UNA bomber's manuscript, Mac?No just redesigning the church into Church by Country or State instead of it being so intangible.

Church of Texas, church of South Africa, etc.

This is more inline with State requirements and assists where State Security is concerned.

It removes the generalisations which are too prevalent today and hopefully ends sectarianism.

So gone are the various 'religions' and now each state or country has its own church which can look more at behaviour than sect.

This is really useful in Eire in order to stop the troubles so now there can be a Church of Eire and everyone can be the same.

The same applies to other countries. Church of Libya, etc.

So you no longer say which sect you belong to you just go to the church in the state or country where you are.

It follows Buddhist thinking in that everyone should be the same.

Now you have State State, State Bank, State Church and that should simplify things.

It means an end to private banking too.

It should be emphasised that this is also a scientifically based secular, or lay, system.

It is also designed to prevent priests molesting children, incest, paedophilia, homosexuality, discrimination, prostitution and pornography and all of the other crimes which have been perpetrated against people in the name of sectarian 'religion'.

This basically renders the vatican defunct and should enable all the States to better govern themselves. This way they only have as many people as they actually need which appears to be about 10% of the current population.

Population reduction is down to natural wastage so calls for another 80 Billion babies can easily be seen to be quite ridiculous.

Someone somewhere probably thinks they can make another $80 billion in this fashion.

Better to have a good salaried career.

At least the poor won't have to keep the church running anymore as the State will fund education and Laic centres which are basically freethinking and which have a scientific appreciation of God and Creation.

Many thanks are due to DR. Steven Wienberg, who is a real gentleman, and a highly enlightened scholar.

So 'christianity' 'islamism' 'buddhism' and 'judaeism' are things of the past and Lay teaching and SCIENCE can now take over and teach good behaviour, logic, logistics, and prudent planetary management.

Let us all HOPE that this is, finally, an end to hatred.

It also spells the end of the superstate, federal 'government', etc. and a return to more modest aspirations.

Solve : help re installing xp please!!!?

Answer»

I'm trying to help a FRIEND reinstall xp. Now normally this isn't a problem however.....I can not get her machine to recognise any cd drives. I have set CMOS to allow me to boot from A drive but I can not get the C: prompt as it says it's not a recognised drive!!!! How do I get to c: or get the *censored* thing to recognise the cd drive??You have to set the BIOS to boot from CD-ROM (D:).

(Floppy) A: is for Boot Diskettes, (HDD 1) C: is for when there is an operating system installed. Which there isn't, if you have formatted. If the C: drive is formatted to NTFS then your bootdiskette won't read it.

You should boot directly to the XP CD (Slipstreamed with SP2 if it isn't already)

Instead of changing the BIOS I just use the OLDBIOS bootdisk to re-direct the boot to the CD-ROM drive.

If you have a problem deleting old NTFS partitions you can use the DELPART bootdisk.

Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files. Unhide all files and folders and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and remove their entries from Add-Remove programs. Then remove the contents of:

Solve : wrong system info showing?

Answer»

recently i had a custom desktop computer built, they switched the entire operating system from the old computer to the new one. i just realized that in the control panel/system it's still SHOWING the old computer specs.  does anyone know how i can bring this up to date with the new computers information? i certainly wouldn't want to reinstall windows xp.  any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Not sure what you mean. How are you getting this information? Please describe what you click, etc, to get to it.

Really? In general, it is not possible to transfer an installed operating system from one computer to another, unless the hardware is near enough identical, and even then there are usually issues. Is this "new" computer supposed to be built out of brand new parts? What are the specs of the new & old computers? A thought... how trustworthy are these people? Could they have just put all your old parts in a new case?

This entire scenario makes no sense...
Having a HDD swapped to a new machine even on the 1st boot it;s gonna show the new machines stats...not retain the ols ones. Quote
Could they have just put all your old parts in a new case?

That's what it sounds like.i probably should have said windows xp and all of my other programs and files instead of "operating system".
following is what the new computer has in it based on the information given to me: Intel Pentium E6600, Asus P5GZ-MX motherboard, 2GB DDR2 ram, Western Digital 500GB SATA hard drive, 1.44 floppy, ATX towercase w/p.s. and LG DVD writer. following is what comes up under system/general: Hewlett-Packard PAVILION, Intel(R) Core(TM) 2CPU, [email protected] GHz, 1.80GHz 1.99 GB of ram. all of the other information under "system" doesn't seem like it applies to the new computer either, but to the old Pavilion. i know that i received what i paid for in the new computer just by the way it runs, fast. maybe this is a little more clearer?
When you first turn the computer on (before Windows starts) do you see the HP logo?

Download speccy:
http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download/standard

After you've downloaded it, double click on it to start the installation. Follow the prompts until the installation is complete.

Run speccy and at the top go to File and select PUBLISH snapshot. You will see a prompt asking you if you want to publish snapshot. Click yes, then copy to clipboard. Now, right-click on any empty space in your reply box and click Paste.

Now we can see your computer's specs.Do you still have The old machine?following is information, i think it was just the H-P Pavilion name that was confusing me as the information seems correct?

Solve : Windows XP- Black Screen When Reboot?

Answer»

Okay.... here is the situation my parents are focrcing me to fix my sisters computer which is pretty much totaled.

The issue is, when ever you turn it on the monitor shows no response. I tried switching monitors w/ ATLEAST 5 different monitors non, prove effective. So the monitor os not the issue

I tired the recovery disc, the installing disc, any disc related to fixing the problem. Black screen still prevails...

I've found no way to acess the harddrive and delete the partion, so I can delete whatever is corrupting it....

I recommended a new harddrive to my parents, but I would like a 2nd opinion on that... is there another way I can fix it? or is a new harddrive best.

Please answer swiftly, much thanks.

If you can suggest ANYTHING I should try please do.Can you enter BIOS (setup) to see if computer detects the hard drive?CPT:

Three questions:

What change(s) occurred just prior to this behavior?  (For example, was a new video card installed? was a VIRUS detected? or was new software installed?)

When you first start the computer, does anything appear on the monitor, such as the POWER On Self Test (POST) memory check?

Are there any series of beeps that you hear?  If so, exactly how many?

Let Commando and i know.
Doc

Nothing appears on the screen at all, no beeps, and no I can't enter BIOS at all. It's just black and my believes are it is a bad harddrive

ALSO: Note this was my sisters computer before, i can gurantee you it wasn't a program.... maybe a virus because she DOWNLOADS a lot of crap and she is one of the girls who doesn't know a thing about the computer excpet AIM,Internet, and DownloadRe-seat the ram.
Re-seat the video card.
Double check all cables are tight & secure.Alright, after that what should I do? There is still no responseDo the fans spin when you turn it on?
No nothing, no power? If the computer has been using the same wallsocket during testing and using, you may wish to try a different wallsocket. No I moved it into my room, I first tested my sisters then moved to my room, and it's getting power the on light shows but the monior doesn't, my sisters video card is fine I tested it in my comp.Do the fans work?Let me run it now I'm sure of it thoughIs that a yes? What fans are operating?wow, fans are deadlet me crack it OPEN the one viewable from the back isn't on but I hear some noise so maybe one is onCPU fan is on

Solve : ERGENT please. Windows will not boot?

Answer»

I did not have ATI Control Panel before the reinstall of Windows XP a few weeks back. I finally got machine almost back to normal the way it was but still having a few video/graphics problems.
I accidentally uninstalled the ATI Control Panel and cannot perform Windows Update while in Safe Mode.I am also missing the 'modem on hold'. I used my resource CD and reinstalled the ATI drivers but Windows still will not boot. The Windows reinstall CD will not do a repair because my ver of Windows is a newer one.
I have really made a mess. Please Help.
Thank you so very much.

OS Windowsw XP SP3
Dell Dimension 4700
create date 2004I will shut down machine and remove power source for a while to see if that corrects the boot problem. Will check back with you in a hour. Thank you so much.
Dell Diagnostics on Resource CD says that I need the Modem on Hold to perform the diagnostics. Quote

You need to provide what was the original problem of the machine going into your current situation. What TYPE of video CARD(onboard or dedicated)? What OS and do you mean CD will not repair? Quote from: PattyBrew

A common problem, you might have to Slipstream your install disk content with SP.3 and updates.

Lots of info here

Sorry for being so dense but what is Slipstream my install disk? and how do I do that? The OS installed on your pc has been updated therefore it is "newer version" than the one on your install disk.  Therefore it is necessary to slipstream (update) the install disk to allow Setup to proceed without detecting a more up-to-date OS already installed and then terminating.

Click here to view instructions on slipstreaming.

Good luck.Thank you so much Dusty.
I VIEWED a thread in that search you ref me to that said that Dell's reinstall CD does not accept the Slip Streaming.

If you GET the error:

This Service Pack cannot be integrated into a destination that also has integrated Software Updates
Consult the Service Pack documentation for more details about supported integration scenarios.

This is caused by the fact that your Windows XP CD contains updates that will be automatically installed when you run setup. These type of CD's will usually be from larger OEM suppliers (like Dell, HP, or others).

You cannot use this type of CD to create a slipstreamed install.

First, the files will be extracted, and next they will be integrated in your Windows XP files: ]

OK mine was not updated by Dell evidently so should I contact them to see what to do to update my CD? I hope they don't tell me that I have to buy a new one.

OS is Windows XP SP3. I use both IE and Firefox browsers. I wanted to run a repair just to make sure everything in Windows is running ok after the reinstall that I regret doing now.  I finally did 3 Restores. The third was back several days from the boot problem and that has allowed me to boot without any problems.
Here is info on my video card, I think this is it. Please correct me on this.
These are called Display adapters. Are they the video/graphics card? They are onboard.

Radeon X300 Series primary and
Radeon X300 Series secondary
I have learned through research that Radeon is no longer updating. They have changed to a Celestica.

Now it shows only
ATI Radeon X300/X550/1050 Series
The ATI followed the reinstall of the OS. The name of Radeon X300/X550/1050 Series was following the updated driver software. (from Driver Max). The Dell Windows XP install cd also has a brand  NVIDIA.   software/driver would not install saying that my machine did not have the minimum requirements.

Solve : Java Plug-in 2 SSV Helper & JQSIEStartDetectorImp 1 Class, what is advantages??

Answer»

Both these browser helpers are installed on my machine, Windows XP SP2. I use IE 8 and Firefox. Are they both necessary and/or what is the advantages or disadvantages of them? I do need the Shockwave Flash/Adobe Flash Player.
I also need HELP in getting my Firefox running to use multiple windows without the Flash crashing. I am SERIOUSLY considering going back to the ver . All flash crashing probs. started after installing ver3. I have disabled all the Add-0ns in both browsers that I dare.   I do see some processes running in the Task Manager that I have not seen before.
Help please and thank you so much.
This site has helped me with various problems in the past. I am TRYING to get machine running like it did 2 years so am doing some major cleaning out. Just wish I knew more about what I am doing. I fear of removing something that is necessary. I have done that and don't WANT to go through that again. I will gladly send any info that you need to help. Quote

Ok. Is the machine slowed down, crashing?

Any previous or recently added exe files(system scanner, updates) could affect background process. You could run an Antispyware,MALWARE and perform a complete scan for your harddrive.

Will disabling add-ons removed the particular crash? On what browser? Thanks Jason. I believe the problems are from video/graphics and software that I no longer use, I don't think I use anyway.  hmmmm
I have tried using newer ver graphics/video software/drivers and not much better but some. I have some flickering at some points where the cursor pointer is on the flashing cursor and it does an uncontroling flash.(very fast) if that makes any sense.
The big problem is to get Firefox running without all the Flash Crashes. I cannot open more that one window ,that uses Flash, at a time without Flash crashing. It is very frustrating.

I have run several malware and virus scans and nothing shows up. I keep Java and Flash updated. With each update I make sure to run RA to remove the old one.  May have to totally remove Firefox and all profile, preferences etc and just reinstall it all including Flash and Java. I really don't want to do that but it may be the most thorough fix. So many of friends are having the same problem with Firefox Flash  crashes.
I have tried uninstalling Flash and Java and reinstalling it but that does not help. Quote

See here --> http://noscript.net/faq#qa3_1 Javascript,Noscript FAQ,Troubleshooting.
You may need to look for other issues concerning your Firefox browser by reading.
Do not manual update Java, just set it to prompt you when there is an available update. Try also disabling JQS in your control panel reboot and check firefox crashes. I may suggest using Foxit but will have to wait for the results on these suggestions for it may not point to a quick solution.

Solve : IE Browser Screen Resolution Has Changed?

Answer»

This is a strange one. I have made no changes to my system (XP SP1, nVidia GeForce MX4000, 512MB RAM, Athlon XP2400) or to my settings, but the screen resolution when I'm ONLINE has suddenly changed to what looks like 800X600. My desktop and all other apps are displaying at the desired 1024x768 and my nVidia settings in my system tray, even when I'm online, show that my resolution is set to 1024x768. A few nights ago I upgraded my display driver while downloading the Battlefield 2 DEMO, but that's not when the problem started. Spyware and virus checks are negative. (BTW, put this under the Windows XP topic HEADING, because it was all I could think of.)IE>View>Text size or hold down Ctrl & SCROLL your mouse wheel.Just when you think you know a little about what you're doing, you get a solution so simple to an "unsolvable" problem. That worked, FED. Don't I feel goofy. Thanks, bud.

The problem is that under HKEY_CURRENT_USER » Software there
