Hello, again.

Raptor will correct me if i'm mistaken, but i understand that running more than one software firewall is not a good idea, as they prevent each other from working properly.

So, if you decide to use ZoneAlarm (a free firewall i highly recommend) or Sygate, be sure to turn off the Windows XP firewall by way of the Firewall applet in the Control Panel.

Regards,
DocI only use one firewall as WELL, I'll create a warning note. Soon.

Solve : 200: Boot Failure?

Answer»

I have an older machine that I put a new hard drive in about two months ago and installed a fresh version of Windows 98 SE. Initially it worked fine right after doing that, but I hadn't had it running since then and had it disconnected from the power supply. Now I TRIED starting it up and it won't boot up.

I get the following message instead:

Searching for Boot Record from CDROM...Not Found
Searching for Boot Record from Floppy…Not Found

200: Boot Failure
203: Insert BOOT Diskette in A:
Press any key when ready_ [flashing]

Any ideas what might be wrong, or more importantly, how I would go about fixing this?

[email protected]
Set the first boot device to HDD 0 in BIOS or remove floppies present in FDD (A:\)

Keeping a computer disconnected from the power grid may cause the CMOS battery to drain rapidly, resulting in default settings loaded upon reconnection.Jay:

Raptor is correct; your BIOS is looking for an operating system on a floppy disk and CD drive instead of searching for Windows on the hard drive.

Do you know how to change the boot order to boot to the hard drive first?

Let us know if you need assistance.

Regards,
DocThanks Doc, THANKS Raptor.

Nope - I have no idea how to change the boot order - so any assistance you guys can offer with that would be great.

I had already done a little reading on the internet, and it made me wonder if maybe having the CPU off power was the PROBLEM. Live and learn I guess.

Thanks guys.Jay:

OK, when you first start your computer, you may see something like the words, "Press X to enter setup" where X = the key you should press. This key may be DEL or CTRL or F2 or something else.

You will then see a text display (often blue with WHITE text) with instructions on how to navigate through the BIOS Setup options, make changes, and save changes. Look for the area to change the boot order and make sure the hard drive is listed first.

Follow the instructions to save the changes and exit setup (often by pressing F10). Your computer will restart and attempt to find the operating system files on the hard drive to start Windows 98.

Let us know how it goes,
Doc
Thanks Doc,

I've changed the BIOS boot up order like you suggested (it didn't save the changes the first time, but I've done it again and it saved it the second time) and the boot up order now has the HDD first.

Having SAID that, I'm still getting the same problem and the same error message.

Any ideas what might still be wrong.Remove any diskette present in the HDD whilst booting.

If there is no diskette present, go back into the BIOS and disable to option to read FDD regardless of boot order. Thanks Doc and Raptor.

Got it to work this morning. You guys are life savers. It's great to know that there is a community out there to "talk you in off the ledge" when you get out of your depth. I guess I'll know where to start next time......

Thanks again for everything!!!You're very welcome.

Were you ever able to connect to the Internet through this ISP, or is this the FIRST time you've attempted to do so?

shazelShazel:

Well, as Raptor stated, your problem is with the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), which is a way to connect your computer to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) so you may access the Internet. If you don't have the correct configuration settings provided by your ISP, you will not be able to connect to the Internet through your ISP. These settings often include a user name and password and other security settings.

When you reinstalled Windows XP, these settings were likely changed. Two ways to change them back:

1. Call your ISP and have them talk you through making the correct changes yourself.

2. Use the installation CD provided by your ISP to reinstall your their software and PPP configuration.

Try disabling Ace Utilities 5 to find out. If you are able to connect to the Internet, then the program may be causing the problem.

You should obtain instructions from your ISP.

Solve : Computer locks when I log on the internet?

Answer»

Can somebody please help? When ever I log onto my dial up connection to get onto the internet, my computer will freeze right up!. This sometimes occure immediately after logging on, or sometimes I can maintain the connection for SEVERAL minutes or longer, but inevitably, it will freeze and lock up. Every TIME. (I have noticed that although the computer locks up the internet connection is maintained)

I have scanned my hard drive for viruses several times since this frist began. I have found and removed 3 different Trojan viruses, as well as 82 pieces of spyware. After all of this , I still have the same problem, although other less bothersome probles have been resolved. Additionally, my task manager has been disabled. I was able to follow some on-line instructions and reenable it, but I still cannot keep my computer from locking up when I get on line. It doesn't matter if I use Explorer or Firefox... Always the same result.. I am running Windows XP home edition. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

msoft say say this.....on memory dump>http://support.microsoft.com/kb/129845/EN-US/Alien:

Yep, it's possible for a bad stick of RAM to CAUSE your error. If you have ever worked inside your computer before, power it off, unplug it and remove all but one of the RAM sticks, then run the memory test again (not sure what software you are using, but Microsoft has a new memory test program available as a free download from their Web site).

If the test is negative, then swap out the good stick and swap in a different stick of RAM, then run the test again. Do this with each one till you get errors, then bring the damaged stick of RAM to a computer store and ask them to sell you a replacement of the exact type.

Words of caution:

  • After you power down the PC, unplug the computer before you OPEN the case.

  • Touch a metal part of the case before you touch any of the RAM sticks to lessen the chance of electorstatic discharge (ESD) damaging the them. Also, handle the sticks on the edges and take care not to touch the metal (gold pins, etc.).

  • Place the RAM sticks on a sheet of paper or cardboard (not on a plastic bag or metal surface) to further protect against ESD damage.

Instructions on how to remove RAM memory modules are here:

It's custom made, built by my bf. He'll be here next week, and will reinstall windows xp all over again. Hopefully that fixes the problem, if it doesn't, I'll get ANOTHER memory stick. Solve : hyperlink in word?

Answer»

Hi

When I copy hyperlinks in Ms word they get copied there as hyperlinks.

But i want to make those hyperlinks text only.

How to do that?

because when i see wordpad for that same document i see "<" and ">" signs at the BEGINING and end of those hyperlinks.Shouvik:

In Microsoft Word for Office XP (these instructions may work the same for earlier versions of Word as well) do this:

1. Right-click on the hyperlink (the text that is underlined and blue).

2. Choose Remove Hyperlink from the context menu. The text will remain but the hyperlink will be removed.

Regards,
Doc

Hi pcdoc4christ:

Thanks

right click the hyperlink ---> EDIT hyperlink--> Remove Link.

But this can not be DONE for selecting multiple hyperlinks and right clicking them.

So what to do if i have a bunch of hyperlinks?Shouvik:

1. In the Word document with the hyperlinks, click File, Save As, and select Word 6.0/95 from the list box.

2. When the message indicates that all hyperlinks will be lost, click OK.

3. Click the left mouse button anywhere on the Microsoft Word page with the hyperlinks.

4. Press and hold the CTRL key and press the A key. This will highlight all the text.

5. Right-click anywhere in the highlighted text and select Font from the context menu.

6. Under Font Color, select BLACK and under Underline Style, select (none).

7. Click OK.

That's it.

Regards,
Doc

Ok..... Its quite clear now

thank you very much

Solve : Outlook Express stationery question?

Answer»

If anyone can help, I would be much obliged!

At my new job, one of my daily duties involves sending out some e-mail announcements each morning. To facilitate this, I saved the first set of e-mails by clicking save "as stationery."

I thought that the messages would be saved as a template that I COULD use each day.

However, when I try to create a "New Message Using" the stationery, it opens a new message that is totally blank. No stationery.

Could there be a problem with how I saved the stationery (File > Save as Stationery)? I heard that sometimes the stationery will show up blank if you don't choose a "background picture," but these are professional, workplace e-mails and a background picture is not appropriate.

I used to send my e-mail announcements with Eudora and it SEEMED much easier!

PLEASE help! Thanks in advance!

http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/faqs/why.htm#nosavedThank you, but this link to "Inside Outlook EXPRESS" doesn't have any information about stationery.

Can anyone help? That can happen if the Sent Items folder is damaged. Move all messages you might want to keep out of the Sent Items folder and into another mail folder you create. Close OE, then delete the file Sent Items.dbx in your IDENTITY's store folder. OE will create a new one when you re-open OE.

In order to avoid this problem, it is best to move messages out of Sent Items and into another folder you create whenever the number of messages is over 1,000 or so. Note that a very large Sent Items folder can also make OE sluggish whenever you send mail.

Solve : Thumbnail View Windows ME?

Answer» HI,
I've come accross a PC with the same problem that I had with mine a few years ago. The thumbnails have disapeared from windows explorer. There is a long way round to correcting this by EDITING the registry, but I don't feel very confident doing this. When it happened to me last time I read in a Computeractive mag that you could download a file from the MS web-site to correct it. I did this and it worked. Theres nothing on the MS website that I can find. Does anyone know where I obtain this 'quick-fix' solution?
I'm back. I've just managed to find the file called 'thumbnail.reg', but now I can't REMEMBER which folder I need to put it into to make it work? Can anyone tell me?C:\>windows system...... another fix....is to type scanreg/fix in the msdos prompt.....I tried both those methods and it didn't work this time. The thumbnail.reg file definately worked last time it happened to my own PC. I'm disapointed I can't restore the thumbnail views on this one.My documents........click view......scroll down the list....

Solve : Faces all over the screen on starup win xp?

Answer»

Hi!

Well i had a good laugh at reading the problems of the others, but SOMEONE has a greater laugh on me.

I came accros a PROBLEM some time ago, but i dont want to do annything before i'm sure whats wrong.

When start up my computer (i have a linux and win xp installed), the linux asks me whether to boot up linux or winXP. The problem occour when i select WIN XP. It starts drawing DOS smiley faces all over the screen, and win doesn't startup! (this worked just fine for a year now)

So i tried NEXT things:

1. Tried to REINSTALL win xp. But the setup didn't started (although the computer booted from CD).

2. boot computer with win98 CD, and tried some DOS antivirus programs. One was saying that master boot record is corrupted and it cannot be checked (something like this), and the other one (fprot) did nothing.

3. I put HD into another computer and scanned it for viruses vith Notron antivir (it found some AdWare, and consys99.exe infected with TrojanHorse, and proxya.exe ). Made some backup on another disk (all data are still there) , and tried to restart again. The smileys were still there. But it worked when i tried to start win XP setup.

I wanted to try with FIXBOOT c:, or reinstalling WIN immediatelly, but i think i'd like to hear if annyone has some suggestions. I don't really wanna change annything on my computer, i just want ot make it work.

Thanks
just a guess do u think it may be a bug??Can you not simply format the partition you wish to install Windows XP on and scan all the remaining partitions/Hard Disk Drives for viruses? Quote

Can you not simply format the partition you wish to install Windows XP on and scan all the remaining partitions/Hard Disk Drives for viruses?

I don't want ot format the partition!!

And i think it's a virus.

So... i did repair win, and that fixed the problem (I dont'know why i couldn't start winXP setup before) - windows started up. Then i installed AVG and scanned again for viruses. It found one virus (tufik.a) and 9 trojans. Before as i sad Norton found only 1 trojan and 2 adwares, and 1 infeced file (can't rememeber with what).

I'm not sure. After i GOT win running, and scanned for viruses with AVG, AVG found Win32/Tufik.A virus and 9 Trojans.

I'm still not sure what (or which virus) really happened, so i'll have to be more carefull.

Solve : deleting files permanently from the hard drive?

Answer»

I want to permanently delete files from an old Compaq LAPTOP that runs on windows 3.1. How do I bypass the uninstall feature and permanently delete the files from my hard drive?I have never used any utility which WOULD wash a hdd where Win.3.x was used. With the SMALL size of the hdd usually found when Win 3.x is the OS I usually just wrote a simple prog to CREATE a file big ENOUGH to fill the hdd then deleted that file and maybe ran the prog again.. Maybe your best bet to permanently delete files would be to format the hdd then re-install Dos & Win.3.1If you have a floppy drive then use a Windows 3.1 bootdisk to format the drive.

This is the bootdisk I use for Win 3·1 Boot600.exe

If you Google for boot600.exe you may find other suitable DOS versions.

http://www.bdtinc.com/pub/software/bootdisks/http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/Dylan:

Take out the screws to the hard drive case and disassemble it, removing the hard disk platters. Use them as coasters, Christmas tree ornaments, Frisbees, or anything else that suits your tastes.

Buy a used hard drive dirt cheap from a computer repair shop, and use that hard drive, instead. Reformat it and reinstall DOS and Windows for Workgroups before you give the computer away.

Solve : Missing Windows Balloon Pop-up's?

Answer»

Hello, I am new to this forum and i hope I am doing this in the right section. I just bought a new computer and i notice that the balloon popups do not work. What i MEAN is for example when using the "Safely Remove Hardware Wizard" and other programs that usually popup alerting me of something dose not work. But i can hear the pop. Is there a setting that will allow me to enable this feature? My computer is a COMPAQ using windows xp home sp2, using Norton IS 2005. I know that its not anything that i have installed because its been doing this right outta the box. Thank YouHOW TO: Disable Notification Area Balloon Tips in Windows XP

1. CLICK Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
2. Navigate to the following subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
3. Right-click the right pane, create a new DWORD value, and then name it EnableBalloonTips.
4. Double-click this new entry, and then give it a hexadecimal value of 0.
5. Quit Registry Editor. Log off Windows, and then log back on.
These steps disable all Notification Area balloon tips for this user. There is no way to disable balloon tips for specific programs only.

If you have the EnableBalloonTips value in your registry and you find that it is set to 0 try changing it to 1 then see if the balloon tips appear when you re-boot.

Most people hate these ballooon tips after using XP for a while and want to turn them off, so you'll know where to look when you want to change the value back to 0.I Thank You so much, that fixed my problem. I now know where to GO when i have questions about my computer. Again, Thank YouThanks for telling us the good NEWS. At least your first experience was a good one.

Solve : Problems Staying Connected?

Answer»
Here's my problem. I'm running XP Home and all was fine till about a month ago I started having problems staying connected online. It runs fine for about 5 min and then I have to restart or dump the IP in cmd prompt. This happens constantly...it has not stayed connected for more than 5 minutes at a time in over 3 weeks. I have tried everything. Even calling microsoft didnt help....they even said they didnt know what it could be. I've reinstalled windows 3 times and still get the same thing. I have cable internet and my local area connection status still reports as connected when I'm not.

Then there are A LOT of the following errors for each day..."The device, Device\Harddisk0\D\ , has a bad block"
I did the ping in cmd prompt and it came up with = packets sent 4, packets recieved 4 and packets lost 0

...If you can think of anything else please let me know and thanks for your help so far.

Contact your ISP.
If the cable modem is spontaneously re-booting, and there is no evidence of signal-related problems, then you should check on electrical CONDITIONS near to the cable modem. Possible causes of these problems are:

The cable modem itself is faulty.
Mains wiring to the cable modem is faulty or intermittent.
Mains spikes arising from e.g. vacuum cleaners, power tools, heating thermostats, refrigerator thermostats.
Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), e.g. mobile phone, local radio transmitter.
There are PLENTY of reports of mobile phones disrupting cable modems if kept too close
I updated the drivers and I've been online now for 15 minutes so far.....the longest in the last 3 weeks. Dont know if this has corrected the problem but time will tell. If it happens again I'll take the ADVICE on contacting my ISP. I did contact them at the start of the problems but they were no help but maybe the cable modem needs replacing?
Thanks for the help so far!

Solve : Problems Caused by Lost XP Disc.?

Answer» HI guys

Just a quick question. I have lost my Windows Xp disc, I am getting a new one but live in a small town and am waiting for it to come into stock. If someone find and uses my disc will my windows stop working?

Thanks

Damkat13 No. But they will be able to use the product number if you lost it with the CD.Hi

Thanks for replying. I am really not sure where my disc is. I dont remember receiving it with my computer it was already loaded but the shop were I bought my computer claims I would have. The dic isn't with my other computer software. I got Office with my computer as well and I still have this. I dont have the product key sticker on my computer so I assume it is with the disc. Anyway thanks for your help I really do appreciate it.

Thanks

Damkat13 If you are certain that you have paid for Windows XP and the use of the product number, it is IMPERATIVE that you locate the CD if you lost it since the product number can only be USED twice (ASSUMING it is an OEM or UPGRADE of either Home or Professional) and you will otherwise have to phone Microsoft to have your product reactived.

Also, if you are certain you did not loose the Windows XP CD (Which is rather difficult, considering the shiney-ness factor) you should use your receipt to demand a copy of Windows XP from the store you bought it from.. Assuming the code/name is actually on the receipt, however, I am certain that you know how to handle the customer-complaint section of this story..

But before you do either, be certain that Windows XP is not located on a recovery CD. It may not even be named Windows XP and you will not notice it is on the CD until you insert i in the CD/DVD-ROM drive. Thanks for your help I will look into it further.

Thanks Again

Solve : A drive keeps grinding when downloading file?

Answer»

For about a week I've noticed that the A drive tries to read/write to a floppy when I download a file. I'm using Firefox and have download LOCATION set to a folder on my C drive, but to get the download to start I have to have a floppy in my A drive. It saves the file to the correct folder on my C drive but I can't figure out why the A drive thinks it NEEDS a floppy before the download can occur.

It's annoying and I either FORGET to put a floppy in the A drive until the noise starts or forget to take the floppy out before I shut down the computer, which means I get that error message the next time I boot up that tells me I have a non-system disk in the drive.

Dell Dimension 2400, Pentium 4 1GHz, 1 Gig Ram, Windows XP Pro w/SP2 and all later updates installed.

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

WaltSorry, a correction - the Pentium 4 is 2.8 GHz.

WaltRun spyware program......majorgeeks.comMerlin (I still like that name),

As you've probably SEEN in my other question, I have quite a few anti-malware programs on my PC. After your SUGGESTION to run anti-adware programs I updated the definitions on all of them (even anti-virus) and ran them all. No viruses or worms, a few instances of tracking cookies and several instances of Wild Tangent, all of which I deleted, then I downloaded another file and the A drive still grinds away until I slip a floppy disk in, then the file obediently saves in the proper location on my C drive. Any other ideas?

WaltWild Tangent should not be present. Neither should tracking cookies. They may not be properly removed or it may have come back. Scan in safe mode install the following applications if you have not yet done so:

AVG Free

Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal

Which Anti-Virus are you using? Have you tried uninstalling the floppy drive and re-booting to let the drivers re-install?

Solve : How can I pick order I want 4 startup programs??

Answer»

Okay, this is my situation: I'm have several programs that run at startup and I think it could be a benefit to decide for myself what order they start. These are the startup programs: I have an APC UPC with their Powerchute software, KeyWallet (a password rememberer), SpeedUpMyPC, Firefox preloader, Norton Antivirus, AdAware, CounterSpy, Pest Patrol, Spybot Search and Destroy, WinPatrol, PrevxPro and Spysweeper.

Naturally, it takes a little while for all these to load and what I'd like to have is to first start Windows Task MANAGER, with the Processes tab selected and prioritized for CPU usage with the process using the highest percentage of CPU time at the top, then SpeedUpMyPC, which has a nifty systray display that graphically shows the percentage of CPU, RAM and Page Memory in use at any moment, and by using Task Manager and SpeedUpMyPC as the first two programs that load I could see which of the programs are taking the bigger chunks of time to initialize (no, I'm not having any conflicts between the various programs and I do intend to keep the full panoply of anti-malware programs because each one seems to catch stuff the others miss).

I'm not having any trouble with my computer, I just thought it would be an interesting exercise to be able to make my own decisions on which programs start first. I am looking forward to sometime in the probably not to distant future when along with viruses, trojans, KEYLOGGERS and other malware we'll be encountering rootkit stuff and would then want to have whatever rootkit eliminator software start first, so this is a chance to try out my idea and see what happens.

Thanks, in advance, for your help, and it's been a real education reading through the various threads that have already been posted on this site. I really appreciate people taking some of their valuable time and knowledge to help others (an atitude that is so rare anymore).

WaltWhy do you need all these programs!Norton Antivirus, AdAware, CounterSpy, Pest Patrol, Spybot Search and Destroy, WinPatrol, PrevxPro and Spysweeper.

pray tell .........us.....even my uncle in glasgow.....does not have these on his pc!If you use your startup tab in WinPatrol, right click & select full report.
You will see most of these programs start from the registry & you could re-arrange the order in there.
I don't think you will see much difference because windows doesn't wait for one to load before STARTING the next one, it just executes the file & moves straight on, so the loading (like 1st to last) is governed by the time it takes each program to load.
For myself, I load the barebones for programs & services, you can set a lot of rarely used services to manual so they only start on demand.Merlin (I LIKE that name and picture!),

For example, in the last hour I updated definitions on all my anti-malware programs and ran full system scans. Counterspy found and allowed me to remove 17 instances of Wild Tangent, yet when I ran Spybot Search and Destroy it found another instance. I've see this, as well as times when one came through with a clean scan and another, run immediately after, found something. Other than a warning message when I start Spybot, telling me that it might identify two of Pest Patrol's files as problems and to ignore them if it does (it hasn't, yet) I've not had any problems or conflicts with all these installed. I do only run one anti-virus because I've read that two or more can cause problems, and I've got the firewall in my router set pretty tightly since it conflicts with any of the software firewalls (it's from D-Link and they told me that was the problem when I was having trouble setting up my wireless LAN). I don't do a lot of surfing the web into wild and wooly territory but I've not had any serious problems with viruses, worms, trojans, etc., and I'm sort of an old fashioned belt and suspenders kind of guy so it makes me feel safer, whether or not there is really a significant increase in protection. Like my wife says sometimes, "humor me."

WaltFed,

So it really doesn't matter which order they start? That explains why the order of icons in the system tray isn't ALWAYS the same, sometimes one program will (for who knows what reason) finish loading earlier than another and the icon will be closer to the clock, then at another time (again, who knows why) another program will beat it to the finish line and its icon will be closer to the clock in the system tray. Well, I had always wondered why that was, and now I know.

Thanks for the lesson.

Walt

ps Any ideas about my question regarding rootkits? I know just a little about them but it seems that they start before any of the anti-malware programs can and hide deeply within the OS. Am I worrying with no good reason to, and do you think the gurus at the anti-malware companies will come up with something to keep those nasty little buggers out of our computers when we need them to?

Solve : Clean install of Win XP?

Answer»

Goodness, I'm going to try to make this as SHORT as possible. Insight into any of the following problems would be absolutely wonderful.

I have a Win98 machine that I'm trying to migrate to XP, but I want to be able to easily roll it back if I have to. I'd love to do a clean install, but I'm running into some troubles with that.

First, the drive I'm installing on doesn't have a separate partition ready for me to use. I was going to try booting from a boot disk, then using FDISK to create a partition that I can use for the clean install, but I'm being blocked there a bit. First, I'm THINKING that, by attempting to change the partitioning of the hard drive, it may blow away the installation I'm trying to protect with the clean install. Is that true, or can I use fdisk to create a seconary partition without destroying the disk's current data?

The second issue with the partitioning is that I've created a Win98 boot disk, but the machine is ignoring it when I reboot the machine with the boot disk in the drive. I don't know why, but the OS on the hard drive is loading despite the presence of the boot disk in the drive. Anyone know why that is HAPPENING?

Should I just go for the upgrade installation and hope for the best? Or am I just doing something wrong with the boot disk, and will the partitioning be possible without blowing away what's already on the hard drive?

Thanks for any help!
KathyYou can partition from the xp install disc and then you will have a dual boot system (98 and xp) which you will have to choose on boot up. As far as booting to the 98boot disc> did you set the bios to boot from a drive first? You can download a windows 98 boot disc here
www.bootdisk.com
Hope this helps.Have you done a compatibility test FIRST of all Kathy, because this is essential.

XP Compatability Test

How big is the drive is another very important issue and so is the rest of the hardware specification.

I would not advise you to pay any attention to the Microsoft minimum specification.

XP needs a reasonable processor and plenty of RAM.

Do you have XP Home or Pro? If it is an upgrade CD does it already have SP2.

You could repartition the drive using TeraByte Unlimited's BootIT NGs Partition Resizer. Just cancel the boot manager install screens and go straight to Partition Work.I would say that it is probably better to get hold of a new drive, btw. Bigger, faster and with a bigger drive cache.

I fitted a 7,200 rev/min 80 Gb drive with an 8 Mb cache before installing XP.Have you checked your CMOS settings to see if your floppy drive is detected?

When installing Win XP it's best to use a third-party application such as Partition Commander or Partition Magic rather than Fdisk.

Also if you can, do a clean install. An upgrade install can cause many more problems during the process.

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]"The second issue with the partitioning is that I've created a Win98 boot disk, but the machine is ignoring it when I reboot the machine with the boot disk in the drive. I don't know why, but the OS on the hard drive is loading despite the presence of the boot disk in the drive. Anyone know why that is happening?"

When you start the computer you'll see on the boot screen which key, or keys, you have to press to enter the BIOS and then you can see if the boot sequence is...

Ist boot device = floppy drive
2nd boot device = IDE 0
3rd boot device = CD-ROM

Solve : Album Info in WMP 10?

Answer»

I've posted this on the windows.public group, and have received no solutions, so I 'spect this problem is one of MSFT's red-headed bastards that lives under the front PORCH...

Additionally, FOUND lots on Google about the PROBLEM... No solution... But maybe, there's Hope here?

Here's the problem:

'Upgraded' from Windows Media Player 9 to WMP 10.

I use it to play CDs.

When I pop a store-bought disc in, there's no TRACK info, musician info, etc.

So I click "Find Album Info".

Onscreen, I get a listing of the tracks, musicians, composers, etc., with the directions, If this information is correct, click Finish to update your Media Library.

Which I do.

My HD spins a bit.

And my track listing continues to be populated by an Unkown Artist, playing an Unknown Song, in and Unknown Genre.

How do I make the information "stick"?

Again, I'm not ripping, or copying, I just like using WMP to listen to CDs.

=======

"Of course I've tried soapy water!!!!"
I have indeed done everything I can find on MSFT's website. Same pattern as above.

Solutions?wmp tools///options......check the settings...If you are using the Windows firewall, check that as well. Quote

wmp tools///options......check the settings...
Of course I've tried soapy water!!!!

Already tried everything I could think of. Anything specific to look for?

Quote
If you are using the Windows firewall, check that as well.
Awesome suggestion... Was using McAfee, uninstalled it, turned off Windows Firewall... And... No change.

What's odd is, on one machine, where I had upgraded from WMP v. 9 to 10 (actually, 7 to 9, to 10), no problem. Same CD, different machine... Problem.

Ugh.
Hmmmm.

What operating system is installed on your PC RJ?Sorry... XP SP2.

On both machines. They are almost clones, except...

The one that is NOT WORKING right... Firefox is the default browser... You think?

Hmmm.... I'll get back to you...Do the following:

1. Tools
2. Options
3. Media-librairy
4. Check folders
5. See if there are 4 entries. If not, CREATE your own.

Solve : external USB drive?

Answer»

I purchased a USB IDE drive housing and have installed a 60GB hard drive in it. I have set the drive jumper to slave. The power light comes on and the hard drive's "hum" can be felt, but it is not picked up as a device, even after refreshing device manager and rebooting. The "no name box" shows no manufacturer (but shows Win XP compliant) and the driver CD shown as included was not in the box. The retailer says there is nothing they can do and their distributor does not know/have a driver/source. Any ideas folks??check the bios setup does it SHOW up in there?Hi Merlin,

Thanks for the reply. I checked but no, it does not appear. Although as a USB device I am not sure it would and if it did, I am not sure where one would see it in the BIOS. I checked all through the BIOS. I have also plugged this into a second computer with no better result. I am running XP SP2.I would guess that you have plug and play <<<,enabled in the bios>>have another look....if its a newish pc most are set to plug and play......is this ide/usb.....on its own ide cable...or a double one?Hi - no, plug & play was not enabled on the machine it is currently connected to, so I enabled it just now. However, I do have other USB devices plugged in to a 4 way USB hub all of which work as did plug & play devices. In any case, it still does not work and does not show a new device message or anything. Plus, as I said, I tried it on another computer (newer) and connected directly to the USB connection with no change.try disabling/removing one of the usb devices thats plugged into the usb hub.......you may have exceeded the bandwidth.......and reboot pc then plug it in?or
have look here paul>>http://www.usbman.com/The HDD may need an additional power supply. Thanks for the replies. It does have its own power and it is working. I tried connecting directly to the PC USB PORT with only the mouse additional with no luck. Any other thoughts folks?I have never seen IDE to USB converter cradles, however, I have two suggestions:

1. Install the correct drivers
2. Try different jumper settings. Master, Cable Select or Factory default (sidewards or removed)Thanks for your input Raptor. As indicated early in the thread, I have no drivers and there is no mfr/model/FCC number on the unit. Given your post, I have tried all jumper settings and it made no difference.
1) should Win XP SP2 not pick up the USB controller as a device even if the drive is not working, jumpered incorrectly etc.?
2) given a USB device such as this I assume that it will only be picked up in Windows (not in DOS or the BIOS) and that no driver would be necessary?Have you tried going through windows add/remove hardware to force detection?
There is a section in there that gives the option to 'show all' hardware which gives a long list to choose from.
If you can force detection, possibly the drivers for the device are in windows as it is supposed to be xp compliant. Idle thoughts here. Thanks Fed,

I will try it if the retailer to whom I just returned it can't make it work. Unfortunately, I BELIEVE they sold me a returned unit and that is why the driver CD that the box said was inside was missing. I think I paid too much as well! Hopefully, it wasn't used at least - some of these computer retailers you need to be as wary of as the old stories about used car dealers!!

I would still welcome replies to my previous two questions if you or anyone has the insight:
1) should Win XP SP2 not pick up the USB controller as a device even if the drive is not working, jumpered incorrectly etc.?
2) given a USB device such as this I assume that it will only be picked up in Windows (not in DOS or the BIOS) and that no driver would be necessary?

Thanks.http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspxYou could try one more THING connect the drive to your USB port check if the draw will open if so go to right my computer on the desktop and go manage and to disk management and see if the drive is listed you should see all the disks that are connected to the computer if not there then the external drive is not connected correctly. If the draw will not open there is no power to the drive. If that all fails you have a faulty drive.

By the way, this number will need to be incremented every time that I use a certan batch file. This little snippet illustrates one way to accomplish this. Naturally you'll have to make changes to file names.

Code: [Select]
echo off
if not exist build.txt echo 0 > build.txt
for /f %%a in (build.txt) do (set old=%%a)
call set /a new=%old%+1
echo %new% > build.txt
set old=
set new=

Hope this HELPS. It works! It really works! Thank you so much! I'll have to remember this PLACE next time I have a question. Thank you, this helps a lot.

Solve : WindowsXP/Firefox?

Answer»

Hello Forum: Am running WinXP -using IE6.x-I installed Firefox 1.04 - Alternating between browsers- Did not change any browser defaults in Firefox or IE- Cannot get Macromedia Flash to download and use with Firefox- It came installed with WinXP when I bought computer-Tried 6 times to install it when using the Firefox browser-Macromedia site says it is there but when I GO to a site using Flash Player and am using Firefox it says I must get Macromedia Flash Player installed- Flash Player works fine when using IE-Is this a Windows issue or a browser issue and could you please help me fix it . It appears in my programs list but will not function when I use Firefox THANK YouBrowser issue.

You may be able to install Macromedia Flash player by going to a website that requires you to have this plug-in installed. Firefox will tell you it is missing certain plug-ins. Click on the yellow bar and follow installation instructions.Raptor: Thanks for reply. I was at Vanguard site and message appeared that I needed to install Flash Player . I clicked on link to Macromedia and downloaded it. Macromedia site ran a test and said it was installed. All the time I was using Firefox. I installed it more than 4 times. Four icons were on my desktop for setup. Still when I went back to Vanguard I got same message. ALSO looked in Firefox tools>options>plugins. Macromedia is not there. I never changed any defaults in Firefox. I have McAfee Virus scan,Windows Firewall(not both)and have all updates-Windows,Firefox and McAfee. I don't think it is installing in Firefox for some reason. It was and is still in PROGRAM listing from original configuration when I bought computer. Thanks again. Bill30955Have you enabled Flash in the Firefox configuration menu? Raptor: all plugins are enabled in Firefox- All have check marks- I think maybe it is the site-Vanguard. I went to other sites and right clicked on ANYTHING that moved and the info window popped up saying "about macromedia flash" went to macromedia site and said it is in use. All using Firefox browser. Will try at work with another computer that also has Firefox. Thanks again Will update mondayHello Forum: Tried same site at work-Using Firefox on WinXP-Comcast broadband- It must be the site that is having the problem-will not activate Macromedia flash player-Macromedia says it is there and demonstrates it-but the site(Vanguard)says it is not there. Not worth the aggravation-will use IE6.x if I want enhanced graphics on the site. Thanks for your input Raptor.( Flash was enabled on the second computer also) bill30955What is the adress of the website?Raptor: Sorry for late reply-been away-The site is vanguard.com-pick a fund and select "performance"-scroll down and see a graph chart(on IE)-Using Firefox, instead of graph chart a message says you must install macromedia flash. Well, it is already loaded and enabled. Bill30955 Is it the picture of the aging man telling you that you need to install Flash player or an upgraded version thereof?

I can seem to access the content just fine apart from the old geezer.

Solve : Horrible Internet Setup Problem with Windows?

Answer»

Ok this is a REALLY annoying problem that I need to fix A.S.A.P. before I get entirely mad with Microsoft's generlizations on how everything "Should" Work..

Ok the problem is that with my other computer that I just reformatted and reinstalled windows on, I am trying to SETUP the internet connection like I did when I first did it though my memory is BAD and I am unsure if I am doing it RIGHT. I am trying to setup the internet and so far I see no possible way of doing it manually, everything I click about connecting to broadband without a password or screenname all it says is "" and when I try to find any way of doing it manually that seems to be the only message I find, and the most annoying part is it isn't doing it automatically like everything says!!! I've tried resetting my modem and router and this computer picked it up but not the other one... I've also tried unhooking and re-hooking up each cable and it didn't work either... I am using a D-Link DCM-201 Modem and a D-Link Dl-514 Router and though I highly doubt it will help, I am running Windows XP Professional SP1. Please help in anyways possible to tell me how I can get this to work! You most likely have to assign the Router the computer name provided by your Internet Service Provider.

Check your ISP and Router manual for further information on how to do so. This is router specific, thus I can not WALK you through it.

However, I am not certain if all cable exploitants work with a computername. You may still need to configure the Router.

If you have configured the Router and you can still not connect, do the following:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Network Connections
5. Right click on Network Interface Card
6. Select repairOk, I think I know one of the main problems here.. The computer may not be picking up my built in modem. I have a motherboard that has the ethernet built into it and usually I can just connect the cable to that and then to the router and head off from there but I can't even access the router setup page which I am supposed to be able to do to setup the internet.Repair the connection if you are not able to access the router.

Solve : changing windows xp from corp to retail?

Answer»

I just bought a computer with a copy of windows xp corp edition installed. My problem is I need to save the system state, installed applications, and DATA. then i will need to reinstall windows xp retail edition. My question is when i install the retail version and then RESTORE the system state, data and applications, will there be some problems with the installation.
My concern is with the ACTIVATION key and cd key that are stored in the registry. Will there be an issue by doing this? will I have to change the key after I have restored the system state? If this is yes, then how will change it.

patrick wilderPatrick:

No problem! Use the new Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. It will save a copy of your user settings, etc., to the hard drive or to a disk. After you install Windows XP (and reinstall your programs) you may then RUN the Wizard inside the new operating system to restore the settings from your previous one.

Here are some links regarding the Files and Settings Transfer Wiz:

Regards,
DocPatrick Wilder.....I'm wondering why you would wish to remove a fully functional XP corp version in favour of XP home ...? I may be wrong ,but I don't believe there is a activation code with the Corp version .......... there is however a cd serial key .
I'm also wondering why you wouldn't just do a format and a nice clean install of XP ?

Solve : RECYCLE BIN ALWAYS EMPTY?

Answer»

Hello good people,

I was ABLE to get rid of the empty folder Dc53 in my recycle bin by following steps at http://forums.techarena.in/windows-xp-support/990228.htm HOWEVER I started having the following issues with my recycle bin:

1. When I restart my machine, I get " Recycle Bin on drive C: is corrupted. Do you want to empty the recycle bin for this drive?"

2. The recycle bin remains empty even though I unchecked " Don't move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" option in the properties. Files get deleted without going to recycle bin.

I downloaded and run latest Service Pack 3 but it didn't fix the issue. Some folks believe this may be due to INFO2 file corruption. I tried to look it up on my machine but didn't find it.

Any advice is appreciated.Create a NEW user account.
See if the new account works right. And fix your capslock button...thanks guys,

Sorry, Patio, I didn't understand about capslock button....

Your topic TITLE is written with caps, theres no need. Its classed as shouting!Sorry guys....I didn't realize.... Ya it is very necessary to always KEEP recycle bin empty. I always keep my recycle bin empty, its help to increase space in PC memory. RECYCLING some of your refuse can result in a reduced amount of trash. Now every time you close the Internet, PC Confidential can be set to thoroughly empty your trash to ensure you’re deleting everything in there.

Is there any alternatives to "Create a new user account " solution......just curious......
I just started having "Can not delete Dc 55 folder....folder is write protected" message again.OK, Now we give you a serious answer. No more SHOUTING!
Try what MS recommends.
Can't empty the Recycle Bin in Windows XP or in Windows Vista
Or was it this one?
Deleted files not going to recycle bin
thanks for the links.

no more shouting - for sure:)Keep in mind it is called a RECYCLE Bin. There is good reason for holding items for a bit before discarding them permanently.Really? - I didn't know that. Quote from: robatcook1987 on January 12, 2011, 09:05:55 PM

memory /= disk space
Thanks guys. You've been really helpful. Before you go...
Memory and disk space do not have a direct relationship.

A young finned of mind is a real computer Genius. But he has a bad habit of cleaning the recycle bin all the time. He has lost very important documents needed by hos company.

So we 'fixed' he recycle bin so that it also looks empty. When he finally learns to control his impulsive behavior, we will put it back the way it was.

Hopefully, he has learned that security is more important that a nervous habit.

Solve : Window XP Pro freezes during installation?

Answer»

During installation of a new copy of Windows Xp pro, it freezes during the set up process at random points of the install.
I have an ABIT Fatality motherboard
Intel P4 Extreme edition processor
Kingston Hyper X memory
Seagate Barracuda 250gb hard drive

All components are brand new, what might the problem be???At what point does it hang...........after the eula or before it..Well actually the original XP pro cd I purchased doesn't get that far. When I boot from the CD I get,

INF txtsetup.sif startup can not continue, press any key to exit.

So I tried another copy of XP pro and it gets to the "Windows Setup" , starts loading the files, and then freezes at random at Loading files

It's strange, I have built a few pc's and have NEVER had a problem installing Windows but this one seems special...Is this install via a remote server..No the install I'm trying to do is directly from the Windows XP pro CD..Unpacking, copying & installing Windows OS files is very demanding on hardware. Any weakness will kill it, especially ram and HD problems.
Browse your xp help files on the disk and you will find how to copy (I think the i386 directory) straight to your HD, using a boot disk, then unpack & install straight from there. There are numerous other install tips as well.
If I were you though I would be looking for the root cause of the hardware problem so you are not plagued with inadvertant crashes in the future.Just make sure that the CD isn't cracked or has a scratch on the label side. If it is cracked you can throw it away. If there is a scratch it might be repairable.

Make sure that the CDs you are using are scrupulously clean. You can wash them in luke-warm water with two drops of mild soap solution mixed in and a soft sponge, then gently dry with a clean linen cloth. Doing this simple task very often solves the problem of read ERRORS from the CD and ENSURES a smooth install. Also make CERTAIN that your hardware is not overheating. Remove excessive DUST and/or install a better cooling solution.

Solve : Computer repeatedly uses '9' and 'F1' on its own.?

Answer» HEY'o !

/Cut out the introduction with name and such, hope no-one is offended. :c /

I've come across this problem with a computer in direct vicinity, basically the computer "spams" both the number '9 and the 'F1' button' on it's own accord. It hardly ever ceases, unless I start fiddling with keyboard.

The problem appeared today when I was browsing the web (email, facebook in two tabs) with google chrome. Suddenly a seemingly endless burst of new tabs opened leading to a chrome help page(F1). Not knowing much about computers I DECIDED to reboot the computer to see if the problem would sorted out.
Instead of rebooting completely, the computer would always go into the bios setup menu(bios setup is F1 on this computer) and it kept doing that even if I removed the keyboard from the computer.

Not sure what more there is to say; A computer is literally spamming the F1 "button" and number 9 "button" as fast as it can, WITHOUT any input, as soon as the power goes on, bios/dos/safetymode/anywhere. Needless to say, it's hard to navigate and operate on such a computer and I'd appreciate some help in fixing this matter.

The computer is roughly 5 years old, but has been updated here and there over the years, it has worked problem-free until now.
I've tried removing and inserting the ram memory.
I've tried doing a system restore.
I've tried restarting about 50 times.
I've tried changing keyboards and just about everything else.
I've tried to check for device problems.
I've done extensive searches on google. (Though it's all but impossible to find the right combination of key-words for the search. . .)
I've even asked the resident nerd for help.

I haven't tried formatting yet, if only because there may be important documents and more on the computer.
Also; I don't quite understand the whole "When in doubt, format" philosophy that computer wizzes seem to be propagating.

Pretty sure I've left something out, I've tried to make it as informative as possible.
Thanks in ADVANCE <3

Also; I don't quite understand the whole "When in doubt, format" philosophy that computer wizzes seem to be propagating.

Dont know what 'wizzes' says that but it not on this forum.

Anyway, if i've read your post right it seems the keys '9' and 'F1' are sticking.

Solution - Buy another keyboard. They're not expensive.I agree...
On the whole and as a group that's probably the last thing we suggest someone do here.Hi!

I'm quite certain that it isn't keyboard related, I have tried starting the computer up with both the ps2 keyboard thing, and usb keyboard. Different brands and everything.

The keyboards doesn't even have to be plugged in for the computer to keep writing '9' and spamming 'F1'.

Two very helpful individuals on the livechat guided me through the process of swapping out the cmos(?), which helped for about 20~ minutes.
But the problem quickly came back soon after, and the computer is yet against spamming '9' and 'F1' -without a keyboard plugged- bootup/dos/safemode/anywhereFrom your description my thoughts were:-

Most likely cause keyboard, try another. You have done this and eliminated it. - so -
Next most likely is a virus. I don't know of one that does this, but if you are infected it can get in at boot via the boot sector. Try booting from a bootable CD if you have one. If it goes away you have a virus, and a nasty one at that. You'll need a bootable CD with AV to get rid of it I think.
In theory you could go back to a restore point but if it is getting in a boot time this may not work.
A restore to a previous disk image with something that can restore from a stand alone boot would work if you have such a backup.
If you only have your infected PC to work with you may need a friend to prepare a bootable recovery disk for you.
Good luck, hope you get fixed before you tear all your hair out.

You need a data recovery service Claire, especially if the work is valuable to you.

If you know someone close by who is expert with computers then they - might - be able to recover data from your drive by using a program called GetDataBack.

They would need to slave your computer's drive to their machine to effect a recovery.

Was the drive partitioned at all? Important data is usually safer on a partition but the ONLY definite way is to have a backup.

Can you give more details about your system?

System Restore can NOT restore a drive which has been formatted during the recovery process.

Hi, I've tried FINDING the answer to this problem but havn't had any luck as of yet so wondered if anyone can help.
My AVG won't open, work or uninstall as it says I don't have it on my computer, yet if I try to download it again or even ANOTHER antivirus program it says it is installed? Need to fix this asap as my computer basically has no virus protection. Thanks.Try the AVG Removal Tool from their site...then re-boot and DLoad/install the latest version...
If these steps won't work then you are infected and the malware is blocking your protection. Thanks for your help, I tried the remover before and it didn't work but it has seemed to work this time so all is fixed now! Good news...

Solve : 2 Computers, one online and a phone cord?

Answer»

ok, here's what I'm trying to do with what I got...
I have 2 computers that are both running XP... one of them is connected to the internet through a router and the other isnt connected at all... I have a phone cord extension, and on each computer there is 2 phone jacks... Is there a way I can McGuyver a small network, piggy back the internet connection for the second computer and allow direct connection between the 2 units?Connect the 2nd computer to the router. The router will allow the computers to communicate with each other and the internet.Routers full, and I DONT have another RJ45 cable or the means to acquire one... just a phone cordSorry if this is stating the obvious
Win XP has a fairly usefull ntwork setup wizad which will alow u to use the router to alow the second computer to use the first computers internet conection. It worked fairly easily with me.Ok, there seems to be a miscommunication... here's what my limitations are, with no exceptions:
1) No RJ-45 cable for the second unit, and no money to get one
2) The router is full, already has 4 computers set up to it

Now I will explain what my intentions are:
To somehow share my connection between my 2 computers with nothing more than a phone extension cord... there are phone jacks in both of them, as they are in your units as well

If I cant have one connected to the net, then I still want to be able to access it for file organization purposes.

To recap: No Router, No RJ-45 Cable, No Money, A Phone Cord and 2 Computers

I could just keep switching where the one RJ-45 cable I do have that keeps me online, but the way my setup is, it's a hassle... So LETS SEE some resourcesfulness

And I'd also like to thank everyone for taking the time to help me out on this... I do appreciateCan't be done...................

You need a null modem cable (no this is not a phone line nor does it actually plug into a modem) or a network cable and a hub, or a crossover network cable and dual NICs in one of the computers (that would also have to act as a router), or a crossover parallel cableHuh... ?
Ive obviously missunderstood something here.
Sorry about that havnt read this through properly and jumped to a conclusion.
Sorry Andrew Massey Why do I get the idea there's more going on here than your telling us .........Here's a thought , why dont dont you simply transfer the info from the one machine over to the other pc ......

Let us know

dl65 What is it you think I'm not telling you? you want the life story? ok...

I rent a room at my friends parents house... They let me hook up my first CPU to the internet through their router.... then my friend gave me another computer a few days ago.... it has a bit more memory and a DVD player.... The only thing is, the router is full cause of the 3 cpu's my friends dad already has hooked up, plus mine.
My intention (again) is to connect my 2 computers together... at this point, I dont even care if #2 doesnt get online... I would be happy if I could just control #2 from #1...

What I do have, is a phone cord.... and on both of my machines, and all of your machines to, there is a card with 2 phone jacks. I'm a sort of hardware newbie, so I dont know exactly what that card is all about, and I was working a theory that if I used the phone cord, I could connect the two in a kind of 'dial up' style network, then setup the windows remote access or whatever I can FIND so I dont have to walk across the room, unhook the cable from #1 and put it into #2 and what not...
Quote

..there is a card with 2 phone jacks.....

That card is a dial-up telephone modem. I don't know of any way to connect them together to form a network.

You said: "...To recap: No Router, No RJ-45 Cable, No Money, A Phone Cord and 2 Computers..."

Sorry, you're SOL. Unless you can find an ethernet switch (similar to router) and an ethernet cable. Start searching the dumpsters and you might find them for free.
thanks man... I dont think I'm at that point of desperation yet, but we'll see
