Solve : referred to Germen sites?

Answer»

I have just purchased a used laptop and it works fine.

The only problem is when I am referred to a multilingul site I get the German language version... and I don't speak it.

For example, I can do a search in Yahoo (english) go to the site (English) but if I do a site search I get the German version of Yahoo or GOOGLE

It sounds confusingin but it is.   No matter what thread I follow it will switch to German and stay there unless I bookmark the site and go back to it without the language suffix.

Running winXP pro sp2 with all the updates

How can I change the setting?

Thanks In Advance,
Lou
Check the advanced search options in Yahoo & Google, there are language things in there you can set.
I wonder why that has happened to you though.
Take a look at the Regional Options in your Control PANEL and make sure your Region is not set to Germany.
Maybe Yahoo & Google check there before searching?
(Don't mention the WAR)thanks  but all are set to English

I just tried to update FRONTPAGE and was taken to the
??/(de-de) area - I changes that to (en-us) and all was ok

but why??

Thanks for the EFFORT, louOne of life's little mysteries I suppose.  But I have to do it at each site

and sometimes that option is not available

oh well......Top taskbar....click view the setting  under encoding should be auto select  ticked.....western european(iso) is it...Auto select was not enabled but it is now....
along  with Western European ISO

Will try it a and get back

Thanks,
louok ......any more problems.....post back.....

Solve : Is it easy to downgrade to win xp from vista??

Answer»

I've got this laptop that has WIN vista on it and would like to change it to xp. I've got a re-installation cd of windows xp with service pack 2 home ed. by DELL. And my laptop is a Dell xps. The installation cd came from my desktop Dell  dimension 2400. Is it easy to do this? You can't do that.

First, you need to check your computer manufacturers website to see if they have XP drivers for your computer. Then, if they have drivers and you still want to install XP, you will have to buy an XP CD with a LICENSE key.I've got the license key. But I'll go to the laptops manufacturer's site and check for those drivers. Thanks!1) Why would you want to do that?
2) If you are GOING to install XP you should use SP3. SP2 is no longer supported.
3) The way to do what you want is to boot to the XP CD, format, and then install.I don't need to wipe out the hard drive? I mean, remove vista?Unless you are going to dual boot then yes, you must format the drive to install an older OS.

Solve : DVD Burning Problem?

Answer»

I am using a XP SYSTEM. I have tried  3 different DVD burning programs. I am getting the same result. The program starts, runs for a few minutes the the Monitor blanks out & the computer crashes.
This is only with DVDs the CD burning works fine. can anyone HelpWhat type of DVD programs? Did it work before? Are the CD and DVD drive both CONNECTED to the CPU?
Have you check for any remarks/status on your optical drives under Device manager? My DVD  & CD drives are working fine, I have not received any error messages. the programs are WINX video converter, DVD Flick, Convert X to DVD4. I have the same result with each. Quote

Did it work before?

Have you tried monitoring using hardware temperature software while burning on DVD? Or removing cd drive? Or swapping optical drives connection? The programs have never completed.  how do i check on the other SUGGESTION?

What does this MEAN exactly ? ?Have you tried other suggestions? Also you could adjust your burning/writing speed of your DVD writer from maximum going medium or lower to test the problem. It might be setting on the CD writer as you mention which is the only drive working or not CAUSING your issue. Or borrow a known good DVD writer for a swap test.

After the 1st couple of dumps I checked Microsoft for updates and updated the HP and graphics drivers, but that did not solve my problem.  My system seems to run fine unless I open the screensaver wndow; then it crashes.Multiple and varied bsod's generally point to a hardware issue. Could be ram, mobo, power supply, maybe even something else. First thing you want to do is download memtest, burin the .iso to cd and run it: http://www.memtest.org/I ran the memtest; 100% passed, no errors.Do you have accessed to your web browsers or cannot open(ex.IE8) or microsoft stops/errors when trying to access the web?
I recently had this error only on opening IE8 and was able to solve it by removing certain add-ons... Just a thought. No IE problems; only in the screensaver window; my pc crashes before I can make any changes.  I'm on the pc now; it works fine as long as I stay away from that window. Well, if it only happens when you use the screensaver.............I need to increase the time before my screensaver kicks in, but every time I open that window my pc crashes. How about just not using a screensaver? Quote from: waltzcar on December 20, 2010, 03:33:21 PM

Make the changes in safe mode...save and exit.

PS These are addon screensavers...correct ? ?
You never mentioned if you had any eye-candy apps such as WindowBlinds installed...I have solved the problem; I noticed that I did not have this issue with my daughter's account, so I created a new account for myself and deleted the old one.  Maybe it was some sort of corrupted file? Quote
Maybe it was some sort of corrupted file?

You FOUND it... Although you never mentioned any accounts. Recreating or removing the account will most likely get rid of any corrupted file in your case similarly to my previous STOP error on my IE browser unable to open or accessed by removing a certain Toolbar from control panel. Good job! And instead of SCREEN savers, you are much better off just SETTING the hd and display to power down after a defined period of inactivity.

The only time that windows installer opens and run is when I open an MS Office program such as word, excel or other office programs and it attempts to install the program I open.Look for Windows installer under Start--> Run-->(type)services.msc--> Ok-->Windows Installer and Check Start-up type. If its on Automatic, Right-click and choose PROPERTIES and choose Start-up type to Manual and click Apply. Check again application. Or toggle also to Disable as last option if it persist. Start-up is set on manual, would it interfere with running programs if I disabled it???

I disabled it and it still starts when I opened MS WordJust make sure it is the only one modified. Try disabling it to check your issue on the running program. You could always adjust it later. Quote from: jason2074 on December 22, 2010, 06:08:53 PM

Solve : Overclocked?

Answer»

whats Overclocking?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OverclockingOverclocking is the process of running a computer component at a higher clock rate (more clock cycles per second) than it was DESIGNED for or was specified by the manufacturer, usually practiced by enthusiasts seeking an INCREASE in the performance of their computers. Some purchase low-end computer components which they then overclock to higher clock rates, or overclock high-end components to attain levels of performance beyond the specified values. Others overclock outdated components to keep pace with new system requirements, rather than purchasing new hardware.[1]

People who overclock their components mainly focus their efforts on processors, video cards, motherboard chipsets, and random-access memory (RAM). It is done through manipulating the CPU multiplier and the motherboard's front side bus (FSB) clock rate until a maximum STABLE operating frequency is reached, although with the introduction of Intel's new X58 chipset and the Core i7 processor, the front side bus has been replaced with the QPI (Quick Path Interconnect); often this is called the Baseclock (BCLK). While the idea is simple, variation in the electrical and physical characteristics of computing systems complicates the process. CPU multipliers, bus dividers, VOLTAGES, thermal loads, cooling techniques and several other factors such as individual semiconductor clock and thermal tolerances can affect it.

Hope this helps

Solve : New Monitor no longer supporting the 1900x1080 resolution!?

Answer»

It's weird because it did support the resolution when I first got the computer, but now it doesn't.  XP will only let me go up to 1680x1050, and I checked in the monitor menu and its listed resolution is 1680x1050.  Not sure why it changed.  I've tried restarting the computer and unplugging the connection to the monitor, but it still wouldn't support the bigger resolution.

Stats:

- computer is an older dell-- around 2003.
- graphics card is NVIDEA GeForce LE.
- monitor is an AOC 22 inch wide screen (brand new).
- Connection is analog (not DVI).

Once again, the monitor did previously support the resolution.  Now it suddenly does not.

Thanks for your time.First you say it's a "new" monitor and then you say it worked when you first got the computer. Which is it?

Download and install the latest driver for your video card. Quote

Simple.  It worked when I first got it 3 days ago, then it stopped working the next day.  Is 3 days not new?

I believe it has a DVI connection, though I don't have a cable for that.  Here's the info:

Any CHANCE you could try the monitor on another computer, preferably one with a more powerful video card?  That could be a helpful step in DETERMINING whether this is a monitor issue or an issue with your computer.  I have the impression your display adapter, the GeForce 6150LE, is onboard, i.e. integrated into, the motherboard.  In other words, it's not an add-on video card.  Am I right?

Again, exactly, what model (not serial #, the model #) is your monitor?

If the problem persists, I'd contact the manufacturer since the monitor under warranty, or you may be able to return it to the seller since it's a very recent PURCHASE.

Solve : Cannot access program file, have 2 program files, one normal, one in My Document?

Answer»

Hello, I have Windows XP home ed, HP Pavilion Laptop. I had to reformat my drive due to problems. When I did this I made a Program File and put in under My DOCUMENTS. It has the program files I used before I had to reformat my C drive.

Now, when I try and access my normal Program File it tells me C:Program Files is not accessible. Access denied. I tried going through user account and set up 2 new accounts with Admin. My current 2 accounts have program admin. But I still can not access the Program Files on the C drive. I want to transfer the Program Files from My Documents to the Program Files in the C drive.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!You need to take ownership: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421Whether you take ownership or not, you cannot preserve installed programs by simply copying a Windows installation's "Program Files" folder tree somewhere else, then reinstalling Windows, (or "reformatting" as people often say) then copying "Program Files" back again. It won't work. You have to reinstall each software APPLICATION from scratch.

I'm guessing he's talking about program data files - but I may be mistaken.

He specifically mentions C:\Program Files.
I have tried taking ownership of Program files but when I right click on it I do not have a Security option or tab to click on.

I think I have most of my programs installed in the Program File folder but as I cannot access the folder I cannot tell this for sure. I cannot reload programs to the Program File as I am being denied access.

I was unable to log in as System Administrator (can not remember password and already tried leaving password blank and clicking OK but did not work) but the name I log in under is set up as administrator.

I see some of my programs on the C drive, not in the Program Folder.

Any suggestions would be appreciated Quote from: gnewhart on December 23, 2010, 08:59:32 AM

You have to reinstall each software application from scratch.
Is it programs or data you are trying to access? If programs, then follow the advice above and reinstall your applications - you cannot COPY them. If data, you need to disable simple file sharing (if XP pro) or boot to SAFE mode (if XP Home).

Solve : Annoying OE popup?

Answer»

I KEEP getting OE popups asking me to compact my email FOLDERS. When I finally give in, after a while it states it cannot action one area. I keep on pressing the cancel  or delete key. It goes away and returns later.
How can I inactivate this please?  Well, the ultimate SOLUTION here is to figure out what's causing OE to choke on that one folder.  Does OE actually stop at that point and does it just display a message saying it cannot compact a particular folder and then proceed on to the next folder?  Can you post a screen print of the message OE displays when it's compacting and gets to that point where it stops?  Do you have a large number of messages and/or messages with huge ATTACHMENTS of photos embedded in them, in the folder that's causing OE to display the message?

Compacting is a normal OE procedure; by default, it will start upon every 100th closing of OE.  Again, you should try to resolve the underlying cause, not circumvent the procedure.

Note: I'll be away from my computer MUCH of the day today but will check back here later.

Solve : Renaming DVD/CD drive names?

Answer»

I have been attempting to re name my optical drives with no success. I have tried EVERY thing I can THINK of. I have tried the following:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\D]
=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\D\DefaultLabel]
="Mad Cat"

All I get is this error:

Cannot import C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\Mad Cat.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import BINARY registry files from within the registry editor.

I have tried the "Open With" Registry editor and I RECEIVE the same error message.

I did notice, while in the registry, there were no drive letters for these drives.

I think maybe I have become a bit overloaded. Information overload that is. Is there any hope?

Thanks
Mad Cat

(not really mad , just a bit off center)I assume that text is what you are putting in a text file?

Export the registry key you WANT to change. look at the top of the resulting file. That should tell you why it was rejecting yours.

Solve : Svchost application error?

Answer»

Hi guys i have a svchost.exe - application error and this is what it says 'the instruction at "0x7c917530" refrenced memory at "0x734131d0". The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of "0xc000009c" this happend after the laptop (xp home edition) was dropped on the FLOOR and it lost its documents so i roled back the computer and i got all my docs back but now when i log ONTO the computer it goes really slow then when i open a program the computer freezes then goes ultra slow and i mean ultra slow i have tryed to disable the automatic UPDATES but its still not working any help WOULD be really nice1) Boot to the XP CD. Choose the FIRST repair option. This will take you to the Recovery Console. Run: chkdsk /r

2) If the above doesn't fix the problem you can try a repair install (boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option). After installation you'll need to GO to Windows Update and download all updates. If you didn't do any physical damage when you dropped the laptop this may work.

Solve : Duplicate file Content?

Answer»

hi friend,

How can we read the content of copied file and compare with the content of files in destination FOLDER (where we are going to paste)?

example:

My purpose is to when we copy and paste multiple times of with  samefile name(e.g 1.txt) it is pasted as  copy of (1).txt,copy of (2).txt etc.

The above scinerio for with the reference of file .The same thing should be done with reference of file content .If content is same the above process should happen.I am not sure what you are trying to do...Are you coping a file from one place to another keeping the same name at the new location? Or are you coping the file to a new location and changing the name and then checking to see if the files match?

Also are these all text files?

I think what he is trying to do is compare the CONTENTS of the file to see if they are the same. I believe he wants to make sure the contents are or not.  Now, there used to be an OLD DOS based Norton program (Norton Utilities) that WOULD compare the contents of a file (where you could split the screen and see the same file name say from two different drives in each side of the split screen and Norton would high light the same or additional content of that same file name)  but WOW that was years ago since I've seen my copy even. My suggestion, since you can not compare the contents of the file in any Windows program that I know of, I would look at the file size and compare that to the file that you are trying to copy into the, I take it, the same folder. Hope I'm right in that assumption. If the file size is the exact same then, it would be prudent to assume that they have the same content. other than that... Your going to have to read the file manually and make the best guess as to weather they are the same or not.

All the best with that

WinNC

I believe I have found what you are looking for seeneedee. Took a couple of days, but I finally found a program simular to Norton Commander v5.51

Here is a program that WORKS the same way as the old DOS version of Norton Commander v5.51 way back in the old days, but this program works in Windows-x. It's called WinNC and It has the same capabilities to compare text files to one another. From different drives or different folders. Whatever you chose. It works off of the dual-pane principle. So you are able to see the comparison right there in front of you. It is a replacement file manager for  Windows Explorer, only a lot more powerful. Try it, I think you'll like it. If it helps you for what you need - Please post back and let me know.

Here is the URL for the Download site. It is at Download.com just so you know you are at the proper site for download. It should be right at the top of the list under the heading of "203 software downloads results for "Norton Commander DOS"

http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=Norton+Commander+DOS&platformSelect=Windows&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows

Just click the Download Now button to the right.

Hope this helps

since you can not compare the contents of the file in any Windows program that I know of

WinDiff

Addins for Visual Studio, as well as the SDK (which is free and includes WinDiff). EditpadPro has a compare option, I think JGSoft even has a software product exclusively for comparing files... sort of. (PowerGREP)

There isn't a shell extension that compares the contents of files and changes the name of the file if they are the same that I am aware of, though.

in a batch file you can do something like this (Taken from  a google search)

Code: [Select]FC file1.txt file2.txt | FIND "FC: no dif" > nul
IF ERRORLEVEL 1 echo "files different"
I like your idea better BC_P. See, the more ya learn, the more you understand that you really don't know much at all. I should shut up now - lol

Solve : unmountable boot volume Dell Latitude D600?

Was working fine.  One fine day I COME along turn the computer on to be greeted by the BSOD 'Unmountable Boot Volume'.

How do I FIX this?  I was reading on the internet about USING the recovery disk.  Is a recovery disk the same an xp installation disk?  Even so, I dont have the original disk that came with the computer, Im not even sure I got one.  I do have a retail disk that I bought.  Can I use that disk to give me the recovery options?

On another note, if nothing else works and I decide to reinstall the operating system, will that work and get rid of this error?
Boot to the XP CD and choose the first repair option. This will take you to the recovery console. Run chkdsk /r then reboot. What happens?Chkdsk /r   In the recovery console should fix. If you NEED more info on it, theres a microsoft HELP page for that.

Solve : GROUND BOUNCE - Locking up & Shuting down your computer??

Answer»

Have you ever heard of a phenomenon called GROUND BOUNCE?

Ever since I have moved into this residence, I have been experiencing computer Lock-Ups & complete power shut downs without any warnings what so ever. Now, I live in the Niagara area and as you may know, there are many power stations and mega towers and hydro lines the size of small tree trunks in very close proximity to where I live. Has anyone ever heard of or acknowledged this phenomenon to be true in any way, shape or FORM? To be honest with you all, I was even entertaining the thought of a Low-Level EMP when all of this started happening.

I have been asked repeatedly to install the Microsoft Windows Update ( KB981349 ) which led me to researching all of this in the first place. In every instance, I have allowed the update. Yet, at Boot-Up time without fail, there it is once again asking me to install ( KB981349 ). Frustrating to say the least. Can you help in this matter?

Some research I have been doing on my own here:

=============================================================
GROUND BOUNCE
In electronic engineering, ground bounce is a phenomenon associated with transistor switching where the gate voltage can appear to be less than the local ground potential, causing the unstable operation of a logic gate.

 Description

Ground bounce is usually seen on high density VLSI where insufficient precautions have been taken to supply a logic gate with a sufficiently low resistance connection (or sufficiently high capacitance) to ground. In this phenomenon, when the gate is turned on, enough current flows through the emitter-collector circuit that the silicon in the immediate vicinity of the emitter is pulled high, sometimes by several volts, thus raising the local ground, as perceived by the transistor, to a value significantly above true ground. Relative to this local ground, the BASE voltage can go negative, thus shutting off the transistor. As the excess local charge dissipates, the transistor turns back on, possibly causing a repeat of the phenomenon, sometimes up to a half-dozen bounces.

Ground bounce is one of the leading causes of "hung" or metastable gates in MODERN digital circuit design. This happens because the ground bounce puts the input of a flip flop effectively at voltage level that is neither a one or a zero at clock time, or causes untoward effects in the clock itself. A similar phenomenon may be seen on the collector side, called VCC sag, where VCC is pulled unnaturally low.

It probably is. Especially since it doesn't even really make sense.Lightning rodsIf the OP is really serious, I will respond will logic and reason.
Otherwise - my usual sonnets.  Ground Bounce has absolutely nothing to do with any of your "issues".  What makes you think you have the ingredients for this phenomenon?

If it were as serious as you think it may be, the computer wouldn't work at all.  The designers would have recognized issues long before production & dealt with it accordingly.

Power companies go to great lengths to insure power quality.  If you really do have a power line noise issue, call you local power company (Niagara Mohawk?).  You might convince them to run a power line analysis.Everything commando said is true.

But I just have to make some remark, can't resist.
Most modem PCs will not hiccup even if there is a power loss for 500 ms more or less. And not power down even with a 50% voltage surge under 200ms.
And never has a any power line anything or earthquake, or bomb explosion, or cosmic rays  cause an OS to become very unstable.  Maybe shut down, but not un stable. It would be easier to toss a coin and have it land on edge. Quote
windowsxp-kb981349-x86-chs.exe - What is the cause of windowsxp-kb981349-x86-chs.exe error?

If Windows Updates are failing to install you can get help at the Microsoft Update Solution Center - http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527#tab0

You could also try dwnloading the update from here - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?familyid=CB21D276-65E9-4C8F-96E3-CF6DC36D0133&displaylang=enDoc, with all of the different problems that you've been describing I think that your BEST course of action would be to do a wipe and clean install. If that doesn't solve the problem, then we could move onto hardware troubleshooting.

Just my opinion. ok - update here. I had another complete power failure this morning (ironically, just after posting this new thread) and when I went to reboot with the main power button on the front of the puter as per norm, both the Power LED & the HD LED lights came on and then went right back off immediately. The puter was completely dead after that. So, I went looking elsewhere for the problem. knowing full well at this point I was looking for a power problem I started with the power supply. I took it out of the puter and cleaned it. I mean it took me a good hour to clean this thing. It had been sitting in there for some seven years and it showed it in every way. After cleaning it I got out the handy dandy Multi-meter and proceeded to perform a bench test. I was getting v0.15 on the yellow and nothing at all on the red wire from the power leads to the drives. Then I tested the main board plug wires and got v0.24 (max) on the yellow and v0.75 (max) on the orange wire. Nothing on any of the other wires at all.  Oddly enough, yes, I could hear the echoes of Scotty bellowing out "I need more power captain!" So, I'm like, ok, it's Christmas day and I need another power supply. Everybody is gone who lives here except for my oldest brother (The Sloth) who is not much use for anything even when he is awake. Except for consuming mass quantities of unhealthy groceries and defecating. so, I decided to go on a hunt in the back yard here which, in the minds of some, could be deemed a junk yard. Took me about ten minutes to find one. It was laying the bottom of an old 200 gallon home-oil tank that someone had cut a hole in the side of and was full of old discarded computer parts. There it was all covered in snow and under the snow a decent layer of dirt and to top it all off, yes, it was frozen to the bottom of the tank. I mean, this thing had been outside for Lord knows how long in this tank in the rain and all the elements, susceptible to all KINDS of animals bugs, you get the picture I'm sure and yes there really was a live spider still living in there. I brought it in and cleaned it. It took like, two hours because I had to blow dry it as I was cleaning it. Got it all back together and bench tested it. In short I was getting much better readings from it as opposed to my old one I had taken out of the puter. I plugged it in and low and behold I am now typing this message to you now. I'm getting v5.17 off the red and v12.24 off of the yellow wire from the drive leads. I'm not going to test the main board plug, mainly because I'm not going to go through all that hassle for nothing because I know it works.  Please, I don't want to sound arrogant in anyway here but, this is how I got the name "Doc" in the first place because I really can fix or build most anything. Doesn't matter what it is. Not to mention, I can be very resourceful when I need to. Ya have to admit thought, that Ground Bounce phenomenon is a very interesting concept though eh!

In the pic you can see the old power supply sitting on top of the puter and the replacement sitting half in and half out of the puter sideways. Just wanted to make sure everything was going to be ok before buttoning it all back up and installing it properly, which it is now. Anyhow, much thanks to all who posted here for your input and help.

Thanks for the links JJ 3000 I will look into that as soon as I get out of here. As it is right now the puter seems to be running fine, so I think I'll hold off on the HD Format for now. See how things go.

Again with the puter back up and running fine, I'll hold off on the call to Ontario Hydro for now as well there Computer_Commando, but I do appreciate the input.

Quote
If the OP is really serious, I will respond will logic and reason.
Not sure what OP MEANS Geek-9pm but have another beer - cheers and thanks.

Anyway, I guess we can call this thread - case closed. Once again, Thanks to all for the input. Have a Merry merry & a Happy happy. See ya'll soon.

Solve : Service Pack 2 and 3 both on computer?

Answer»

I have SP 2 and SP 3 installed on my computer. My computer is showing that 3 is installed. The original reinstall disk is 3. Should I remove SP 2?I just leave them all on the puter. If SP-3 is d/l on top of SP-2 I figure if they sent it to me then I should just leave it there just in case the puter needs something from SP-2. You know how finicky Microsoft can be if you go deleting things and they haven't told you to right? If they wanted SP-2 deleted when you d/l SP-3 then they should have gotten rid of SP-2 during the install of SP-3. Only makes sense to me.

SP3 is a cumulative update that includes SP2 hotfixes.

RTM -> No service pack

SP1/SP1a : installs to RTM.

SP2 Installs on either RTM or SP1/SP1a. Includes all the updates/hotfixes from SP1.

SP3 installs to SP1 or SP2, and includes updates from ALL service PACKS. It cannot be installed to the original RTM version of XP simply because they set it that way (one can force it to and it works fine).

When you install a service pack, it creates "BACKUP" files in case there is a problem. If you take a standard RTM of windows XP, and install SP1, it will make backups of the system files of the RTM as they were before the update. If you then install SP2, it will create another backup of SP1; so if you find you have problems with SP2 you could roll back to SP1; and if you really wanted to after that you could roll back again to RTM. Same applies to SP3.

Basically, what I'm saying is it's literally impossible to install SP3 without also having SP2 installed; Service Packs are cumulative.Just a question BC_P. What part of this big blue marble to you reside on? and don't EVEN think about giving me Log & Lat. LOL!

Solve : stop: 0.0000007B during installation?

Answer»

I always get a stop: 0.0000007B error messages when booting from the installation CD of Windows XP or XP 64.
Usually, disabling AHCI fixes this issue, but not on this computer. I have no clue what else can be causing the problem.
I switched 32 bit and 64 bit modes, tried both IDE and RAID modes instead of AHCI, loaded fail-safe defaults in the bios, updationg bios, without success.
And Google does not seem to be of any more help...

All I'm trying to do is access the recovery console in the installation CD to create a new bootloader as the current one is corrupted.

System:
MOBO: Gigabyte x58-USB3
RAM: 12Gb DDR3 Corsair Dominator
CPU: Intel i7 960
Graphic card: Asus EAH6870

I do not have a floppy drive. No one capable of helping me out?

I have one more question, if I install a 32 bit OS on which I install a 64BIT virtual machine (say, in VMware for example), will the 64bit OS virtual machine detect more than 4gb of ram? From MSDN:

Quote

0x0000007B: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
Windows LOST access to the system partition or boot volume during the startup process. Typical causes: Installing incorrect DEVICE drivers when installing or upgrading storage adapter hardware, or a virus.

Your 2nd question is a bit unclear....if the machine is not 64bit capable you will not see 4G of RAM.The machine itself IS 64bit compatible... that is not the question. I just want to KNOW if a 64bit virtual machine can reconise all ram even if it is working from a 32bit OS (windows XP pro in this case)

As for your quote, that does not help me much. Alright if that's the problem, but how do I fix it? Quote from: spikedfox on December 24, 2010, 03:44:30 PM

noYou generally cannot run a 64-bit guest OS under a 32-bit OS.  And when you can, it's hardware is virtualized. It's not going to be able to access parts of the hardware the Host OS can't.

Solve : hard drive not being recognized?

About 2 months ago i installed a 250 gb ide hardrive into my Dell Optiplex 280, P4 2.0 1 gb ram. All was fine until about 5 days ago when i woke up to find this PC at the blue XP screen shutting down( not the blue screen of death blue sreeen). I let the PC shut down completely as it was on overnight. Iwaited for a few minutes and restarted the PC but it would not see the harddrive all I got was a blinking cursor at the upper left hand of the screen. I made several attempts to reboot through out the day but still got the same thing, a blinking cursor. Just for fun I took the hard rive out of that tower put in into another Dell Otiplex and what to my wondering eyes did appear it booted to the hard drive. I took another hard drive an 80 gb,  from yet still another PC and put it into the first Dell Optiplex 280 and it booted right up!!!! So to summerize the Dell Optiplex 280 P4 2.0 will read other hard drives except the 250 gb hd. And the other dell PC will read the 250 gb hd just fine???!!! Why wont the PC Dell see my 250. We cannot tell what he's done to this point.Thanks. appriciatate all the help....but not sure what other info too provide??/ I am using XP Pro SP3 and if my PC is in the hibernate mode ( whatever that is) dont I need to acces the HD to disable these feature and if i cant get to the hard drive to get to the place where  i disable these features how do i disable them???
Is it possible that I've stumped the computer world as we know it??   Ive noticed that on the one Dell that does read the 250 gb hd there is a bios version of A09.  The bios on the non-reading Dell has a bios version  of A02. Just wondering if that makes a difference?  Maybe the
A02 bios cant read larger hard drives??? but it did for a couple of months.........i am stumped......just CALL me stumpy........It would not be a BIOS issue if it recognised it at one point and then did not. Quote from: bigal50 on December 21, 2010, 05:54:20 PM

Optiplex GX280 is A08, so don't know what you have.  There is no Optiplex 280 listed.  Are both your machines identical?
Go to www.support.dell.com  Enter the Service Tag for each machine.  For each BIOS version, they will list the changes/enhancements & whether the version is optional or critical.Did you use a different cable when you hooked it up to the other computer?oh  sorry my bad guys they are both optiplex " 260's"   but one has bios version A09 and the other has bios version A02 and yes i did use a different cable when i hooked it up to the other computer. i used the existing cable that was in the other computer.Try a new cable...can;t hurt. There's a GX260 & a GX260N.  Your bad again!  Same BIOS for both, A09.  A02 BIOS is not listed, nor is A03 thru A08.  There are no notes for A02 thru A07, but it does say: The following changes have been made to BIOS rev A08 to create A09.  This indicates there was a version A08, but doesn't say what was fixed in A03 thru A08.  If the A02 machine does not recognize the 250GB, I would update it to A09.  If you don't follow Dell's instructions, exactly, you will have a dead computer.

Solve : Annoying IE8 Pop Up with each boot?

Answer»

I have Windows XP SP3
Following a Reinstall of Windows and all the updates including IE8 I am getting this POP Up asking me to download IE 8 each time I boot up my Desktop.
Please tell me how to get rid of it. Everything I have checked says that I have IE8 installed.
Actually I ran across something the other day that said I have IE 7/8 which has never appeared before, it was a scan I believe when scanning for drivers in my machine.
Should I delete the IE8 Setup file?
Thank you very much.I also have Windows XP and the SP-3 loaded on my puter. I don not use IE at all. I've even deleted it through add/remove Programs. Now, it does come back and reload itself into it's folder again, but it doesn't bother me at all and I do not D/L any of the Microsoft up-dates for IE. I use Firefox as my main browser and it works fine for me. I have to tell you, I really detest anything that comes from Microsoft these days. I have been around since the days Windows 3.1 and over the years, in my mind anyway, Microsoft has really gone down hill with their programming to the point of being negligent even. In fact the next puter I build will be Apple based. I KNOW they have their problems too, but not to the extent of what Microsoft does. A couple of other things I will not use are: MSN Messenger, Hot mail, Yahoo Messenger (anything Yahoo actually) and I hate FaceBook. the only reason I keep FaceBook is so I can keep track of my kids. I do not use any of their apps. As I do have a life. Just out of curiosity, what kind of computer do you have - make, model & year?

What happens when you go to start ->all programs ->windows update? Does it find updates? Is IE8 one of them?

What kind of scan did you do?JJ, no Ie8 is not one of the update.  Sorry I don't remember which scan I did. I have done so many since the reinstall which MADE my machine function WORSE than before. After the holidays I will try to run the scans again and let you know. It may have been a diagnosis scan. Quote from: Doc_Vibe on December 23, 2010, 08:59:32 PM

I use Firefox for my business transactions but like IE for my games as it loads them faster as well as the different applications of the games. Much faster than my Firefox. With Firefox I get a lot of 'Please Wait' and a lot of Flash crashes. Maybe this new update will stop so many flash crashes.
My puter is a Dell Dimension 4700, 2005, so it is pretty old now by puter tech standards. I hear ya PattyBrew, I built this puter back in 2004 and it's been faithful and virtually problem free for the most part, so I understand "old computer" for sure. Where you use your browser for playing games, I simply don't play games on the puter per say. Now, I do have an account with Pogo.com and love that site just for the games (mainly Pool & Euchre) and if I'm going to play games, that's where you can find me. Other than that, I use my PS-3 for my Auto Racing Simulator only. I do not play any other type of game on the PS-3. I'm just a piston head. I have been for most of my life. I just got done a 20 year stint at Chrysler of Canada where I actually had a hand in building Richard Petty's new Challenger, (in Petty Blue - of course)  Jay Leno's Challenger, Dr.Phill's Challenger and the $400,000.00 Challenger that crossed the Barrett - Jackson Auto auction on Speed Channel just last year. It was the first one built for the public and had the 000001 in the V.I.N. number. Sorry if I went a bit with that, but Like I said, I'm piston head. I can't really tell ya what kind of puter I have because I literally went to the warehouse and bought every little piece individually. The tower, the mother board, the C.P.U. and so on... Took it all home and in a few hours was up and RUNNING on the net. So, it's my own Frankenstein of parts & pieces. OK, enough about my bad habbits.

Oddly I was expecting to pull this link out at some point for Geek-9pm... oh well.

In regard to the original question, it's asking to update the installed version of IE8. the popup isn't saying "update to IE8" as much as it's saying "update your IE8".

Although I can't see this popup so I have no idea. You might be able to find and remove whatever is starting it with a tool like Autoruns. It's thorough which can make the output a bit intimidating. Mike Lin's Startup Control Panelis similar but excludes lots of the extra stuff (like boot time drivers and so forth) that probably wouldn't be that relevant.

But I like to ask
do you try  to uninstall ie8 and restore your earlier version of Internet Explorer ?
and reinstall itI've actually had this stupid popup on my friends Win XP laptop and my XP VM on my Windows 7 Machine at home... Annoying as it can be, I used Unlocker to forcefully delete IE and all its counterparts, and I'm sure there is a registry key that auto-regenerates IE every time deleted, just like if you delete ntoskrnl.exe (Yes I know, hard to believe and stupid) It actually auto-creates itself if you ever try to delete it, right afterwards even if immediatley rebooted upon deletion or moving, (force-reboot, ACPI/Reset button press), the darn file still stays there.

I've tried many methods and still MicroSoft keeps putting these files back. (I'm talking about IE here, was I not?)

Any help would be great too.

Oh, and I have IE 8 on that thing but it still asks me, even when I launch IE!

Moro, no but during the initial installation from the disk SP2 installed first which had some IE 7 in it because I just did a search and found Welcome to IE7 and IE7-WindowsXP-x86-enu.exe
So IE7 is on my machine. Seems od to me that it is there with IE8. I my  Task Manager Progress there are 5 instances of internet explorer.exe. I really don't think that many is necessary but what causes that many to show up? Mostly there 3 which Is still too many I think.BC,
Could I totally uninstall IE8 and then reinstall it from the website to remove all the IE8 processes and this popup?
And what about the IE7?For Doc and dearGodpleasehelp, I want IE8 to use for play. I don't want to get rid of it.  Microsoft does not trouble me being there at all. This problem and others started after I reinstalled Windows, which I should not have done. I should have just ran an repair, but I realized that way too late.
The only game I play is a Ganz game called Webkinz for myself, friends and my grandkids. We have fun with it and it is a great learning tool for the kids and a fun escape from the stress of the day.LOL
Doc, you are a true designer and artist. My dad was an auto mechanic and I love the smell of an auto shop. Brings back old memories. I used to tinker with mine until they all went computer. Can't look under the hood anymore and see where everything is, it is so compact.grin   I would like to build a computer some day. I have been into mine a few times to clean and add memory cards. It is still a very good machine. I ran Everest and found out a lot in there that I did not know was there.
Well, have fun and have a very Merry Christmas. Quote from: Doc_Vibe on December 24, 2010, 01:13:52 PM

I ran the Autoruns and found many duplicate entries but not duplicates of IE8, mostly they were software like IObit 360 and of that sort. I do keep getting an error message that CDautorun is having a problem and IE must shut down. When doing system diagnosis I was tild to put CDAutorun at the top of the boot list. I was not told to move it down when finished so it is still there. Is that OK. I have Tweak Now Power Pack 2010 installed and on the Autoruns report it showed that my CDautorun is in that file.CDAutorun is starting Internet Explorer for some reason. When Internet Explorer starts it shows that update thing if there are available updates I believe.

Solve : Locked out of Windows XP possibly due to a virus, Safe Mode not helping?

Answer»
WINDOWS XP Home Edition
Service pak 3 (I believe)
HP Pavilion 725n
1GB RAM
70GB HardDrive (with 35GB of free space)
NVidia video card (can't remember version)
AVG free version antivirus (up to date)
No Windows CD
Pretty much the only thing I do on my computer is play Sims2 (way too much) and hang out at Sims2 forums.

Here's what happened:

I had my computer on standby for the night, and everything was fine prior to that.  In the morning when I brought up my desktop, everything on the desktop was highlighted.  I right clicked in an open area to unhighlight everything, but instead, all the files and folders on my desktop started opening.  I couldn't stop them, and I had dozens of folders and subfolders opened on my desktop in RAPID succession.

I started running my antivirus program (AVG free edition last updated on Dec 21st).  It ran for 3 hours, finding no viruses, but a ton of spyware.
It stopped before finishing, and I got a text box saying that my computer was going to restart.  I didn't want that yet, but clicking 'no' didn't work, and my computer rebooted itself.
When my computer came back on it asked for my login password as usual, but my password was not accepted.  I repeatedly tried my password, but it would not work.

I restarted in Safe Mode, and my room mate (who knows more about computers than I do), tried to change or remove the password so that I could get in, but that did not work.

I don't have a Windows disk (stupidly lost it during a move).  So I don't have a way to reformat, and no MONEY to pay anyone to do it.

Is there anything I can do myself to get into my computer, or am I S.O.L.?

THANKS for any help.

MarilynIf you have access to a CD or DVD Burner you can use a password reset tool that is free to download and Linux based to get back into your computer if the system  password was screwed up. As far as correcting for this problem you will need to get an OEM Windows XP CD to fix this. It can be a friends etc, but you have to use YOUR KEY to activate the build to AVOID piracy. If you dont play video games etc, you can switch to Linux for FREE. I use a Live Distro of Linux to surf the web etc and never get infected because its a read-only OS that runs direct from disk to ram.

Solve : changing fonts?

Answer»

Help! I don't know how to change the font size AFTER I have written a long document - without going through it bit by bit.

I have written 30, 000 words for a self-publish book, but now  I notice that the publishers say that it will be printed EXACTLY
as received on the disc!

I have written the 30,000 words in 12point - but the disc has to be in 10 point.

I just can't find instructions for this anywhere!I should have said I am using Windows XP PROFESSIONAL
GrahamWhat program are you using?

For most word processors (Assuming you're not using a Macintosh) it would be:

CTRL + A to select ALL the text in your document (May take a while with 30.000 words..)
CTRL + > to increase text size. (+1 or +2 points with each CLICK)

Thank you so much for that!!
The control + A works; but the control +> does not
I am using a PC
Regards
GrahamAnd what program are you using?

My apology; it is actually the CTRL + . (dot) BUTTON to increase font size and CTRL + , (COMMA) to decrease font size.

This may only apply to Microsoft software such as Notepad, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etcetera.
You will have to RELOAD the disk with the format/data  it contains.....and drag/drop.....copy it to the format you wrote it in.Or a folder....an adjust it from there?what program did you use.....for these files.....etc.. a decent publisher has the software to resize fonts/colours etc......

Solve : Are you sure you want to delete 'WINDOWS'? - Although the Trash Bin is Empty?

Answer»

My Recycle Bin is reporting that there is something in it, (By the icon on my Desktop) but when I click on it to open the Recycle Bin, the Recycle Bin is empty. Yet, when I right click on the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop and click on "Empty Recycle Bin" this Dialog Box appears. (Pic below) I even got bold on day and clicked on 'yes', but nothing happened, the situation remains the same. I have not tried to delete WINDOWS in any way, SHAPE or form at all. I have no idea how it even got in there.  (I'm still not sure if it really is in there. Like I said, when I click on it to open the Recycle Bin, it is empty.) It's like a ghost and I'm chasing it's tail.

Any suggestions on how to sever this tail?

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]another thread I found:

http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-xp/recycle-bin-wants-to-delete-windows/32355.html

Second reply seems to explain one reason this happens.ok- I searched for "WIN98" and the only thing it could find was 4 data files - (Pic Below) So I don't think I'm running two OS on this puter. I did, at one time, run "Window 98" on a different puter, (That was my old 486 DX puter) but not on this one. This puter has always been a Windows XP OS since conception.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]other suggestions:

reboot. (if you haven't already, seems this resolves the issue for some people).

Make sure you're up to date. a Windows update a few months ago (apparently) fixed this particular issue.

However, you aren't using the "standard" recycle bin; see if you can disable the norton tool that seems to be taking it over, then try emptying it.Occasionally, this happens on my Win98SE machine.  I just ignore it.  Use CCleaner to empty Recycle Bin, etc.Although I don't want to start a new thread, (or maybe I should, just for this specific problem) I am trying to get "KB981349" update to load on this puter (as BC_P suggested) but I keep getting this error (pic below) and it halts the install.

I did a search for the "wuauclt.exe" (which "KB981349" is looking for when it does the install) and I have 4 files that the search found. (I will POST the pic in the next post.) Should I simply delete these files and let the KB981349 update re-install them? Will that leave orphaned pointers in the Registry data file? Which very well could be the situation as it is.

Doc

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Here are 4 files that search found for "wuauclt.exe"

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Click start then right click My Computer and select Manage. This will open computer management. Expand Services and Applications in the left hand pane by clicking the plus sign next to it. Double click on Services. Find the Cryptographic service in the right hand pane, right click it and select properties. Make sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic. Under Service Status if it's stopped click on Start then click OK.ok - I got this "Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer v2.2" up and running and this is what it came back with.

Now, do you think I really need to install all these updates? I don't even use I.E. at all.

Solve : Rolling And Bleeding Screen?

Answer»

I have a screen problem that goes where it wants to go, you have to keep bringing the window back to where you can view it.

I also have a bleeding screen prob. that opens up multiple screens on top of each other, this will go away after a PERIOD of time.

Been doing it for a length of time which didn't bother me until it got so extreme.

I have WindowsXP-3 home.
I have the MAXIMUM ram installed
Computer indicates I'm USING less then half of my cpu

Anybody have any ideas? thanks1)What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, ETC)?

2) Have you run full scans with BOTH your av utility AND MalwareBytes?>>>1)What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?<<<

Thats hard to say, this has been going on for a long time, since I don't use the computer for anything important I will PUT up with most problems; this one has reached my limits, (I do get a lot of errors that flash thru before I can read them)

>>>Have you run full scans with BOTH your av utility AND MalwareBytes?<<<

I run daily scans with multiple utilities (including MalwareBytes), it's rare for them to pick up more then cookies, can't remember the last thing that was red flagged

Try another monitor...if it does the same thing it's the vid card/chip...Just wondering, have you updated your video card drivers lately?

To be honest with you, it sounds like a prank program that someone has put on your puter. I have several that act exactly like  what you are describing.  Just my thoughts.

Solve : random bsod could be bad??

Answer»

I was browsing the internet and the bsod randomly appeared i checked event viewer and I found this

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x100000d1 (0x52c337c7, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0xb7dcb39f). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini122710-01.dmp.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.0x100000d1 means IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. 90% of the time it's caused by driver issues.

You can get more information on that particular crash (such as what file caused it) using either BlueScreenViewer (Easiest) or you can literally open the dumpfile in the free windbg tool (which comes with the debugging tools for windows). The latter option is more involved (requiring the assignment of symbols servers, the use of !analyze, and a rather cryptic commandline). Unless you really know what you are doing you should be able to get away with BlueScreenViewer. That almost always shows the file that caused it. (and it's a lot easier to install and use)
Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyMini122710-01.dmp   12/27/2010 12:04:15 AM   DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL   0x100000d1   0x52c337c7   0x00000002   0x00000000   0xb7dcb39f   Ntfs.sys   Ntfs.sys+139f   NT File System Driver   Microsoft® Windows® OPERATING System   Microsoft Corporation   5.1.2600.3081 (xpsp_sp2_gdr.070209-0028)   32-bit      C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini122710-01.dmp   4   15   2600   90,112
COULD be anything from a driver issue (as BCP SUGGESTED above) to bad ram or overheating. First a question... What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? Then we will see where we go.well lets see I'm pretty sure this same bsod has happened before.

Nothing been new other then I bought and downloaded a expansion for a game.

See this is whats weird I had just got done playing and was going to get on Tinychat with some friends
and it had randomly popped up.

The only programs I had open were VLC, Firefox and Skype.

EDIT: The COMPUTERS works fine but I'm curious as to why I got this BSOD last night when I was bassically doing what I do every night.Okay. Well the first step is to update your video and audio drivers. Then you can check for a bios update. If the problem continues, boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /R. If still no joy, run a ram diagnostic.

That should keep you busy for a while Video and audio drivers are up to date.

Hopefully this isn't too seriousI meant to mention that drivers should be downloaded from the OEM websites, not from Windows Update.

Can i get a laptop pc to run Mac os x snow leopard?

Probably, but since it violates the Apple EULA which requires the OS install to be on Apple branded hardware, it WOULD against the rules of this forum to tell you how to do it. In any case, you would be better off thinking up something to type into a search engine such as Google.

please post the direct link to the page you want us to look at instead of posting the link to the main site. It appears as spam in its current state.

By doing so, the URL appears to have no relevance to what is being said, which makes it look like it has been inserted randomly...something seen in a lot of spam.  Doesn't mean it is spam, but it can make it difficult to tell the difference.I see.

But we do know how to read a url. A site called osx86.org is of "no relevance" to a discussion about putting OSX on, er, x86 hardware? I don't agree. To make this a bit clearer, although I should have thought that everybody knew these things: 1. It's an .org domain, so not a business 2. OSX is a Mac OS 3. x86 is what we sometimes call PC CPU hardware. It looks very much like a "Mac OS on PC" site. Directly relevant. Although if we have to write our posts so they are immediately comprehensible by 11 year olds who never read anything that isn't about World Of Warcraft, then posting here will be a lot more onerous than it is already becoming.

While I agree the comment about "spam" may have been a little "nit picking", I don't think it's necessary to keep the thread going this far astray from the original topic. THANKS. Quote from: Allan on December 24, 2010, 11:26:26 AM

More than a little.
Yes, we better return to the topic at hand, about directly breaking Apple's EULA.

Solve : Loading Hard Drive with Win 2k in another Notebook?

Answer»

Hi Guys
I am running Win 2k in a Gateway Solo 9300. When I attempt to move the hard drive to another laptop [a Gateway Solo 450SX4] I get the Blue Screen.
We all know how sensitive Win 2k is to a different driver ENVIRONMENT. My guess is that the new driver requirements of another PC is setting off the Blue screen.
Can anyone tell me how to disarm the old drivers beforehand or bypass them so windows will look for the new drivers and the OS will load without giving me the "Blue Screen"?
Thankyou - JuanWin2k/winxp crack down to stop people transfering o/s/s.......attached the notbook via a null modem/data link cable and transfer your  files......you the FILE transfer wizard.....Start in safe mode.Merlin
That's just what I'm trying to avoid. In order for your suggestion to work, I'd have to be able to get to the desktop. I've already duplicated the hard drive so I could leave my other notebook operable. If you're suggesting loading win 2k in first, and then copying files over, you're talking about way to much work.
I THINK i tried Fed's way, but I'll have to look again. Thankyou both for your suggestions.Same screen when loaded in safe mode.I'm posting what i found. It was a memory issue. This particular notebook calls for PC100Mhz. The memory that was installed was PC133Mhz. The installed memory ALSO wasn't SPECIFIC to this application. Experience has revealed that the Gateway Solo 5300 or 5350 appears to be VERY cranky. It is not happy with just any pc100Mhz chip. It wants what is specified for it. I experimented with three different Solo models. The pc100 chip would work in two of them but not in the 5300 model.   Quote

Solve : Cannot run XP CD?

Answer»

I was happily running XP when I decided to install Linux as a dual-boot.  My friend gave me a CD for the Lycoris distro.  I used the Lycoris installer to make a 20 GB section on my 80 GB SATA hard drive, which it did. I installed Lycoris and tried to boot it. It hung at the boot screen for an hour until I restarted.  I then tried booting XP. The boot screen appears for a few seconds and the computer restarts.  I thought it was not a problem and that I could just put my XP cd in and all would be WELL. unfortunately, it doesn't load and the "choose an os" screen appears. i then tried killdisk and it says that there is an A: drive and asks me to choose a file because killdisk.exe doesnt load.  i dont have a FLOPPY drive, but if needed i can take it out of my other computer.  i have tried playing with bios settings with no luck, just trying to get lycoris to load.

so, any help would be greatly appreciated! You will NEED to change your bios to make your cdrom the first boot drive.
Then boot with the xp disk in & repair/reinstall xp from there.
(If I were you I'd delete everything, delete & re-create new partitions & start fresh)my bios has cdrom as first boot device, and it will load other cds. it won't load the xp disc though. It sounds like the 2 operating systems are having some issues with each other. Thats why you shouldn't duel boot unless you have RECOVERY Console installed.

Hmmm Only thing I can think of now is try booting into safe mode for XP. If you can't put in the Disc for Linux and uninstall linux.

This should free up your XP

you might just be screwed though. i'll look it up.i think i am just screwed.

how should i go about formatting my hard drive now? Quote

Solve : Cannon Pixma Rrinter?

Answer»

I just put in a new color ink cartridge and when I go to print anything the screen says I am low on color ink!  What is wrong?  It prints just fine but it did not register that I put in a new cartridge! You probably have the only Cannon Pixma Rrinter ever made but for us to help you we will need to check the online manuals for a Canon Pixma Printer as they are probably the same as yours.
Unfortunately there are a few different models so if you could tell us your model number it may help a little.
Of course you could always read the manual you have.
I'd expect there would be somewhere in the software interface to 'reset' the ink, thus telling the software you have installed a new cartridge.  I have a Cannon Pixma iP1500 series photo printer.  I looked in the manual nada.  I CHECKED the software interface nada.  When I installed the new cartridge a window opened and asked if I installed a new cartridge and I checked Yes.  It is just frustrating that something so sophisticated cannot register a new ink cartridge!  Welcome to the tech AGE! It sucks!Try going to your control panel then selecting printer and other w/e. Update the configuration. This is how I fixed mine before. Only difference is I had a lexmark.

So it might WORK. If it don't I can look into it some more for you.
EMAIL me if it consist.
[email protected]"Welcome to the tech age! It sucks!"

Try the Canon website while you're waiting for an answer from here.
I'm going to get a haircut. BBL.Well, I tried what you said and wound up with a default printer, when I tried to print nada, I deleted the default printer, nada no print.  I uninstalled the software.  New install WENT very badly and only partially, computer would not recognize the disc in the slot.  The printer works but none of the periferals like the photo application.  I got a messed up printer now.  SICK to my stomach and going to bed.  Did you check with Canon?Well I'm glad I went for a haircut. LOL
Just uninstall the printer & drivers and reinstall it again.
That will probably fix your ink problem too (for now).   Quote

You did remove the plastic label on the Ink cartridge that prevents it from leaking, correct?I did take the plastic lable off and I am getting good color prints that I did not get with the old cartridge so I guess that is a confirmation.  Canon on line sucks big time, no way to ask a question I tried.  They referred me to this site.  You are doing their work for them!  I tried unistall twice now and it will not install properly.  Only basic printing and I guess I am just going to live with that as I have another photo process program I like.  I think this string is over now unless you have some new idea.  I actually had to pin the drive the disc was in to get it out of my computer! It may be a computer problem to boot, who knows?   See if this is of any use.

Solve : WMI/ DCOM/ NT AUTHORITY - NETWORK SERVICES Error?

Answer»

Windows XP SP2

msinfo32 gives "Can't Collect Information - Cannot access the Windows MANAGEMENT Instrumentation Software. Windows Management files may be moved or missing."

Tried lots of things:

Ensured all related/ appropriate services are set to automatic and enabled (i.e. Event Log, WMI Service, RPC)
Run the System File Checker, i.e. sfc /scannow
Running Bitdefender & Spybot
Have used Xsoftspy, Ewido, NoAdware, Spyferret, CWShredder and Stinger - the machine is clean !
Checked a multitude of forums and related problems/ fixes (including all the good stuff provided by Kelly and Ivan Brugiolo.)

The system event log provides an entry each time I run msinfo32 - Source: DCOM, CATEGORY: None, Event 10016, User - NETWORK SERVICES

Properties provides a description and a Microsoft link: "The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{73E709EA-5D93-4B2E-BBB0-99B7938DA9E4}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20).  This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

I WENT to the microsoft link and followed the instructions to add the permission for NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE to the WMI. i.e. Start/ Control Panel/ Administrative Tools/ Component Services/ Computers/ My Computer/ DCOM Config/  Windows Management and Instrumentation/ Properties/ Security tab/ Customize/ Add/ Advanced/
Find Now and the NT AUTHORITY/ NETWORK SERVICES user was not on the list.

Tried adding permissions for NETWORK, SERVICES, SYSTEM and AUTONOMOUS LOGON (since I understand that is what NT AUTHORITY is classified as) all to no avail.

Plus and possibly unrelated My Documents will no longer open without the torch appearing.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Have you tried to roll back to a previous restore point?Thank you for your prompt response - alas the restore point has long gone - I have had this problem for about three months. Originally after my upgrade from 98 to XP Pro it worked fine - then something happened - or most probably I did something - bad !

At FIRST I focused on restoring my OE email, fixing a Office fault which made Word crash on starting, I recently fixed a problem of having a blank Network Connections. In doing so I learned something of XP.

If there is no way of repairing Windows - which I am still hoping there is, I will have to contemplate doing something from scratch. I don't know if one can reload/ upgrade XP over an existing already upgraded system.

You can try the following:

1. Before Windows XP loads, press F8
2. Select last known good configuration and press Enter.

Here are a few interesting articles:

Perform a Repair Installation

This has cleared up all existing problems - msinfo32 now works, MY Computer appears quickly without the torch and the shut down speed has returned to normal.

Many thanks to all at Computer.Hape.com especially Raptor et al.

When returning to Windows noticed new small issue, in that the pictures for the user accounts were all changed to a chess board and the old set of pictures is no longer available in Control Panel/ User Accounts/ Change my picture.

Regardless many thanks again !

JettyRatYou are welcome. Glad you have got your issue resolved.

As for the user account pictures, can you not redownload these? I would have no idea where they are stored..

so i try a recover ( last know configuration)
same error

try to reinstall windows and get blue screen saying that wondows has stopped to protect your pc try diabling shodowing or cashing , i enter bios switch , it tries to install but ultimately ends up blue screen,

now upon the following REBOOT i get BOOT SECTOR WRITE  : VIRUS CONTINUE y /n

I hit yes and lokk up boot secotor virus, try format/ fdisk , try fdsik /mbr ,  finally use killdisk program.. now i can only get it to boot with a floppy of course and yes i have set up the partitions? so i am sure i have left much out but i dont know what else to cant renstall win xp pro , cant get it to boot cant get a recovery at all

I think it has something to do with ram perhaps but first how do i remove a boot sector virus given i am where i am now?
Disable antivirus PROTECTION in BIOS.
DELETE first partition, recreate it and install Windows on it. In fact, if you don't have important data on other partitions you can erase those too.
I don't think fdisk /mbr works on Windows XP...
What says in your computer book about those 2 beeps repeating?
Aha, I found it: how to rewrite MBR in Windows XP
Boot from the WinXP CD, select "recovery console". You may be asked of administrator password on that computer.
It will dump you at a command prompt, and you just type "fixmbr" and it will rewrite the WinXP boot sector.Justus:

Let us know if you need help entering your computer's BIOS setup display to disable virus protection (which also keeps Windwos from installing).  After you install Windows you may enable the virus protection if you like.

this is very frustrating. i restarted my computer, and windows wouldnt start up again. im running on window XP, and when i TURN on the computer, it shows the computer info, and then after the XP opening screen, it goes all black. the cursor APPEARS, and i can move it around, but that's the only thing i can do. please help me!!!Hold down the f8 key on boot chose last good config from the OPTIONS.....Liddokun:

Just curious:

Was anything changed just prior to this happening?  (For example, was a new expansion card added?  Was a new software program installed?)

Do you have a good idea, or even a guess, as to the cause of the problem?

Let us know so we may let you know what to try next.

Docyes. i did attempt to install Pro TOOLS Le 6.0 prior to this happening. then that's when it started not to load.yes. i did attempt to install pro tools le 6.0 prior to this problem. this was when the problem started to occur. Can you start in safe mode?sorry about the double post. connection got cut. Can you start in safe mode?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Liddokun:

No prob about the double post, i've done that before!

Pro Tools may have been infected with a virus or may have been poorly programmed (like programmers SAY, "Garbage in, garbage out").

So, the question to answer is how do you return to the way things were before the software installation?  There are a few things you may try:

1. M2's suggestion to have XP return to the last known good configuration (which will restore the Windows registry to the way it was before the software was installed).  If it works, this may be the easiest way to fix the problem.

2. If this doesn't work, try FED's suggestion.  Chances are you won't be able to boot to Safe Mode if Last Known Good Config does not work, but if you can get to safe mode, then you should use XP's System Restore to return to the restore point that it created when the software was installed.

3. While you are in Safe Mode, i'd also recommend running your antivirus program just in case a virus is the cause.

If you need help getting into safe mode, or if these suggestions don't fix it, let us know.  If all else fails, we will talk you through a repair installation of XP.

Regards,

Solve : Missing system file?

Answer»

My computer is called HCL made in India.

I recently purchased a flash drive(PNY 128MB). As per their instructions I have downloaded the driver(called T20.zip) from their website but am unable to install it. I extracted the zipped file using Winzip9.0. The four extracted file types are .exe, .inf, .pdr & .sy . Of these, the .pdr & .sy have the Windows Welcome icon. I think this means that my system is unable to recognize them. Clicking the setup.exe file gives me a message that says "Main .in_ file with[Setup]section not found!"

Some months ago I uninstalled the Norton Anti-virus I had (I now have AVG ) . Later, while trying to get rid of unwanted files, I found some files that I thought were associated with Norton/Symantec and deleted them(I think from Program Files, but I am not sure.)Also removed them from the Recycle Bin. For some time now ,as my computer boots I get a screen that reads:

"Cannot find a device file that may be required to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this file, but the device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still  want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
    C:PROGRA~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEVNT.386
    Press any key to continue....."

I do not know if this has anything to do with my not being able to install the driver for my flash drive. PLEASE HELP.
Reading your problem, I can deduct the following:

1. You can not install drivers for your Flash drive

2. You removed files of unknown (to you) origin that you thought were related to Norton Anti virus

3. You can still enter Windows

Are the following statements correct?

Answer these questions:

1. Which variant of Windows are you using?

2. Can you still access Windows?

3. Have you downloaded the correct drivers?

4. Has your Anti virus scanner ceased to work?Thank you.
Your 3 deductions are correct. The answers to your questions are:
1)I'm using Windows 98SE.
2)Yes, I can access Windows
3) Yes I have downloaded the correct driver----I have double checked.
4) I am using AVG Anti virus(free) & it is working. The solution to having the error dissapear at startup may simply lie in doing the following:

1. Start
2. Run
3. Type regedit
4. Press Ok
5. Search for SYMEVNT.386

Remove all entries related to Norton.

However, before doing so, first remove the C:\Program Files\Norton folder should it still be present on your computer.

If it is still present, remove the folder and restart the computer. If the error is not gone, do as I suggested previously and edit the registry.

The Flash drivers:

1. Create a new folder
2. Copy the compressed document into this folder
3. Right click on the compressed document that CONTAINS the drivers.
4. Select extract here
5. Run the installation file.

These instructions may partially only apply to WinRAR.

<---- Agrees with Raptor and suggests you backup the registry before deleting the keys.
I edited the registry as you suggested . Did not find SYMEVNT.386  but found a Norton folder & deleted that. But the startup error message persists. This is not so important . My main problem is not being able to use my flash drive. Followed your instructions . On clicking setup.exe I got a "USB Flash Drive Driver Setup Utility" Message box (instead of the Installshield Wizard as indicated in the PNY website installation guide) . Selected 'Install or Update Driver' & 'Start'.  After the line filled up with blue I got "Installation complete. Please replug your device". I inserted the flash drive in the USB port but there was no "Removable Disk" in 'My Computer'.

1) Should I check USB controller option in the BIOS settings to make sure it is enabled? How is this done?(I am already using one of the ports for a modem-----so is it already enabled?). I am nervous  to mess with the BIOS settings , so  DETAILED step by step instructions will be appreciated.

2) How do I find out where the driver software is located in my computer?  That is , if & when it ever gets installed

Quote

2) How do I find out where the driver software is located in my computer?  That is , if & when it ever gets installed

1. If you are allready using an USB port, and it is detected properly, then it has allready been enabled.

2. Not quite certain. I would say X:\Windows\System32.

Did you properly search through the entire register? You can only search through the entire register by clicking on this computer and then use use search. If you click on  one of the folders, it will only search there.
Why am I unable to install the driver? Is it possible that some Windows file is missing? Isnt there ANYTHING I can do?

I had a faint hope with the BIOS thing-------now that that's out what should I do-------fling the *censored* flash drive out the window?? I'm totally fed up
This must be one of the few problems that has foxed even you! Thanks anyway..........From what you have told me, I would say that you are using incompatible drivers. However, if you are CONVINCED that you have downloaded the correct drivers, then the problem may lie somewhere else.

At the moment, you experience two non-related difficulties, correct?

1. Norton error messages

2. Flash ( Reader? ) driver problem

Have you solved the first issue by editing the registry MANUALLY?

Have the drivers succesfully installed after you have done as I recommended? How many usb devices have you got.?..........you could unplug one them and plug your  flash drive in.......

Type msinfo32 in the run box.......click + components click  +usb......this will tell you more......and you could click+ problem devices it should throw up a code....tell us what it reports....From msinfo32 Problem Devices I got the following:

  USB 2.0 FD
   Unknown
  This Device Has a Problem: Code=28 (0x1C)
The drivers for this device are not installed correctly. To install the driver
for this device, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
   Registry Key:                               HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\enum\USB\VID_154B&PID_0010\6E5107009F17
   Alloc resources:                           None
   Forced resources:                        None
   Boot resources:                            None
   Filtered resources:                       None
   Basic resources:                          None
   Driver:                                          Driver Not Installed

However I cannot find the Driver tab.load the software first>> try again>http://www.pny.com/support/drivers/?prod=attache.. upon downloading  it should read compressed folder which you have said  ok>>> now click on the folder and then click the setup icon  and reboot pc now attach the flash drive....I did all of this many times over ------no luck! But what about the code  I got from Start>Run>msinfo32> +Components>Problem Devices? does it convey anything?

I tried downloading & installing the driver for ANOTHER but similar device from the same site. It gets installed smoothly--- exactly as outlined in their installation guide. So what's the problem with this one?
The flash drive should have come with drivers......maybe its  faulty take it back to dixons/pcworld/currys/maplins or wherever you bought it....i have one of those and have no problems with it...?Try add hardware wizard to see if it helps...... I live in India & this device was bought in the US!

Anyway the only way I can think of to find out what is wrong is for someone with Windows 98SE (unfortunately all my friends here have moved beyond this!) to download the driver from http://www.pny.com/support/drivers/?prod=attache
(the first picture  on the extreme left(USB 2.0, 128MB)-------the file that downloads will be called T20.zip) & install it temporarily. If it doesnt install , then we know where the problem is.......

Thanks in advance to anyone who does this for me & lets me know!

Solve : Place disclaimer on all outgoing emails?

Answer»

How do I do this? I've researched all the topics I know. Thanks. Depends on the E-mail client you are using.

You will have to write a DISCLAIMER yourself.Writing the disclaimer is not a problem. It's getting it to appear automatically in Outlook on all emails I send. There is a COM add-in that requires only an .exe or .dll file, but when I write my disclaimer in Word, I can save it only as a .doc file. A .doc file is not a choice on the COM add-in selections. I've also tried saving the .doc file as a .pdf and recording it as a macro, but the .pdf won't work. If I record the .doc file as a macro, it places double line spaces where I hit enter at the END of short lines. Plus, I REALLY didn't want to have to remember to run the macro on every email. That's why I wanted it to appear automatically. I think there has to be an easy way and I just haven't found it yet. Thanks again.Try adding it as a signature.

I myself use Mozilla Thunderbird where I can simply load my signature ONTO each E-mail via the account settings. It accepts .txt documents.

Try the following articles:

OLEXP: How to Insert an HTML Signature in Outlook Express Messages
OLEXP: Error Message: Signature File Does Not Exist. Signature Feature Is Disabled
OLEXP: Cannot Add a Signature File in Outlook ExpressThanks Raptor. I'm downloading Thunderbird now.Do NOTE that Thunderbird is an entirely different E-mail client. You will be able to important Outlook (Express) settings, though.

Different as in; Easier, more reliable and more pleasant to use.You need templates.....

I suppose you tried without administrator password: just press ok when it asks that password; if you are a bit lucky, no one has set up an administrator password.
If you don't want to save anything, just insert the windows xp cd and reinstall Windows XP. You can erase the partition, recreate and install on a fresh partition. Be careful, still: you need all the drivers for all those components you see, outside computer case, and also for the components you don't see, inside computer case. And, of course, you will have to reinstall every application you want to use. Quote
