Solve : new guy needs help?

Answer»

Hi,
I am having some trouble with my wireless card, I guess I am in the right place... Anyways I have a speedstream wirless network card (802.11b) and I have never had any problems with it untill now. I am away for school and they put me up in a hotel, I can connect to the hotels wireless network with no problem but randomly get kicked off somehow.

The network is really slow (when I look at my bandwith usage on the meter in the task manager I have only USED 5% at the most EVEN when I down load a lot of stuff at once). Sometimes I just loose connectivity even though the computer has not moved and sometimes it seems that things just lock up.

If i put the cursor over the icon next to the time, the detail box comes up very slow and choppy, and I can no longer connect to the web even though It says I have excellent stregth.

When I disable and reenable the network card all is fine again somtimes as well as just hitting the repair button (windows never detects a problem with the connection). BUT sometime I get a fatal error message and sometims a blue sceen and the computer restarts. When I do the error REPORT it says it may be a driver issue but it does not know which one. I have not installed any drivers recently so I dont know what it could be.

I am runing a DELL inspiron 8200 windows XP home with SP2 and as far as i know all updates. I am running IE 6 and Firefox 1.06 both have the same issues.

Is it possible that my network card is giving up the ghost, I have never had this issue before on my home network or any other network but nobody else in the hotel seems to be suffering from these problems (except the slowness).
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give as much detail up front as i could thanks for any help you can give meBTW
I RAN Spybot SD Ad-Aware, Smantec virus scan corporate editon 9.0 set to find spyware, and trendmicro House call with spyware sweap, all with viruses or spyware found. and a band withspeed test found that I was communicating at 249 kilobits/sec
TIA for any help

Did you by any CHANCE drag the My Computer icon, or any other icon situated on the desktop, out of the screen?

You can CLOSE toolbars by pressing ALT + F4.

You can also right click on the toolbar and select close toolbar Quote

Mark:

You, or another user, have opened a folder and dragged the window to the right so that part of the folder is hidden.

To close the folder, click the icon at the TOP of the partially hidden window and select Close from the drop-down menu.

anyways
i start it up
and it comes to windows loads FINE
my pc clock is wrong it is set in 2003 so i reset the clock to the time it should be i shut down the pc. start it up again and it reset again
so then i went into the system bios reset the clock in there it worked fine in windows i shut down pc and startup again
and it reset to 2003 again
what is going on
any HELP would be appreciated because i cant CRACK this problem...Your cmos battery is flat.Does the same behaviour appear in the BIOS?i replaced the battery and it still does it
so its not the battery the old one and the new one are brand new batteries for the motherboardya the bios has the same thing
december 2003
and the time is way off tooHas the battery got a good connection, it's easy to bend the little arm that holds it.well i SEARCHED around and i was able to find a bios update for my motherboard should i try that maybe?i am using the computer without any problem right now
besides the clock resetting everytime...
the CONNECTOR for the battery is not loose i have to push in the tab with a phillips head screwdriver to get the battery out so no its not looseI can't see that fixing it.
Is the battery in the right way?yes the battery is in the right way with the print of it face upI don't want to harp on this but your symptoms are classic flat battery (or bad battery connection).
Do you have a small spingy arm over the top that presses onto the battery?
Is there tension on it?wait wait so what your telling me is my motherboard is *censored* then...
sounds like a pain to fix itnope their is just a clip holding the battery in no armWho said that?nevermind
look is their some software upgrade i can do to fix my pc clock problem
or is this going to take a upgrade of some sort?

Solve : Lots of problems.?

Answer»

Ok. I have some major problems. I have a windows xp with SP2 and my taskbar is glitching.First it was gone, then i learned i could bring it up when i added the address bar to it. Then whenever i minimised something it wouldn't zoom into the taskbar or even have an ICON. I have to press Alt-Control-Delete and click switch to to bring something up.

My next problem is after about 5 minutes, any program gets grey like another program is TRYING to switch.

I tried to Reinstall windows xp but i have the SP1 cd, not SP2. I went to uninstall SP2 but it would just sit there and not do anything. I will give more details if more are needed Quote

1. Try doing the following:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Taskbar and Menu Start
4. Lock taskbar

2. Have you scanned for VIRUSES, trojan horses and spyware?

3. Reinstalling will only cause the problem to become worse. You are replacing newer files with older ones. If you want to start over, you should read this.

Solve : Sending a Link in IE6?

Answer»

Greetings:

I am having a problem sending links through the IE toolbar on my laptop.  Every time I try,  another window pops up and asks for my loginnpassport user ID and password.

The laptop is running XP Professional.

I have no problem sending links on my desktop,  which is running ME,  and goes right to Outlook Express for the link.

I have tried resetting the IE defaults,  to no avail.  Outlook Express is also the default mail handler.

Any help that could be offered is greatly appreciated.  Thanks,  in ADVANCE! Quote

What exactly do you mean? You can not access webpages without it asking for a name and password? Quote

What exactly do you mean? You can not access webpages without it asking for a name and password?

No...  I'm on a webpage,  and I want to send a link to the page to SOMEONE in my address book.

When I click on the 'Send a Link' radio button,  instead of opening up Outlook to send the link,  another window opens and tells me "This secure Web Site (at [email protected]) requires me to log on.  Please type the user name and password that I use for Microsoft Passport'.  Then it takes me to my Hotmail account.

However, only  the 'Read Mail' radio button opens up my Outlook inbox.  All the other options,  "New Message,  Send a link, and  Send Page"  all ask for the passport.

Again,  when I sign in,  it opens up the Hotmail E-Mail account.

I would much prefer to have Outlook Express handle these tasks...  but have no idea how to set them as default.  I've tried resetting IE defaults,  and Outlook Express does seem to be the default mail handler.  I do not use Outlook Express, nor INTERNET Explorer but I can suggest the following:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Software
5. Program Access and Settings

See to it that Outlook is set as the default E-mail client.

Why would you wish to recover CORUPT data ?  I would suggest downloading the INFO again .

dl65

What no the .ISO file is file the program i extracted went currupt because i was running a ton of prgrams in the background and the intallation failed and deleted some of the filesI aint downloading a 1.1gig File again!
Through Bittorent at 20KBS!So what i need to do is get the ISO file back and re-extract it then i can be on my merry way i dont think thats possible.

i mean you could try a system restore back to yesterday when you had it. But it might not work like thatNo it's possible theres eDATA Unerase but it sucksI scanned with eDATA Unerase, Found!
But the button Save File Isn't theretry the system restore then.

do u have windows xp?Isnt Norton Ghost what all thats about?System restore is not going to bring back files that are meaningless to the operating system.

You should simply redownload your Warez and stop firewalling BitTorrent.yeh i have Cheaked it out.

Norton Ghost is software that can retrive files and back up your HDD for you.

So go into PC WORLS and Buy that I Wouldn't complain about FREE ILLEGAL files...

The key words there being FREE and ILLEGAL... Who says i'm downloading illigally? And For Your Infomation I'm Downloading Anachy Online Which is Free!

Solve : everything's really big!?

Answer»

My little girl switched the computer on and off several times and now everything on the screen is much bigger (icons, text etc).  Colours have gone all strange too.

For example this web PAGE has side and bottom bars, otherwise it doesn't fit into the screen, as if I've clicked on the two little squares on the right hand corner of the window.

Please help!!

Frenchie
On your monitor you'll see some buttons just below the screen. They control the brightness, contrast, and screen adjustment. These options vary among the monitor manufacters, so the best thing to learn how these work is just by messing around with them. Just be careful!!!

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]1. Right click on desktop
2. Select properties
3. Settings tab
4. Set resolution and amount of colours.

If you can not see any other resolutions or colours in the list you MAY need to reinstall videocard drivers.I have the same problem...everything really big.  I have tried changing the screen area settings (I know I'm doing that right because I've done the same thing at my computer at work and it worked just fine).  After I click Apply or Okay, there is a message that says "You must restart your computer before the settings take effect".  After I restart the computer, the settings are not saved.  I don't get the message that says your desktop will change in 15 seconds.
I'm a simple computer user, so please no big words or industry vernacular.  For example, I immediately understood "everything's really big" long before I figured out what "screen resolution meant"
Thanks for any help you can provide.  1. Right click on the Desktop (Background)
2. Click properties
3. Click on the Settings tab (First from the right)
4. Click on the advanced button
5. Now you are accessing the General tab
6. Under compatability, set the method of changing the resolution to whatever you desire.

See if this solves your problem.Go to the top of your screen.....click view now scroll down to text....and change it to mediumIt happened to me occasionally. I have not found other way to solve that problem than reinstall Windows. It happens...
How little is your little girl? Maybe you should teach her how to stop and start the computer... Oh, and she is not to be blamed, SOMETIMES Windows just "dies" alone. Quote

Oh, and she is not to be blamed, sometimes Windows just "dies" alone.

The user is at fault 99% of the times. Computers are not meant to be used by children. If they were, they would be unbreakable.I have found the compatabilities area and experimented with each one to no avail.  The screen area slider always reverts BACK to 640 x 480 no matter which variation of colors (16 colors, 256 colors or High Colors 16bit)

And no matter which compatability button I select, I always get the message about having to restart the computer.

Thanks for your help.Right click on desktop (in a empty area, not on a shortcut or something else); choose "Settings", then "Advanced", choose "General" (it should be already there) and see what option is selected (it should be "Apply new display settings without restarting"). After that, restart your computer and try to change again the resolution.
I suppose you have Windows XP installed.
Have you tried to press (many times) F8 when computer starts; a menu should appear; choose "Use last good known configuration"? Tell us what happens.Your display drivers may be corrupted, have you tried to reinstall them?Ussually, if they are corrupted, even after reinstall they will BEHAVE the same... From experience with the same type of error...Viking, should that happen again, try using the following tool:

Driver Cleaner
-- Removes driver remains after the uninstallation thereof.

Be certain to follow the instructions carefully otherwise things will go wrong.

Raptor,
I have not tried to reinstall my video drivers.  I don't know how to do that.  What operating system is used?win98?

Solve : Folders and Files not in alphabetical order?

Answer»

Until about 6 weeks back all folders and file NAMES appeared in alphabetical order when I opened a program or looked in My Documents.  Now they are never in alphabetical order.  Sometimes the last one USED is at the bottom and each one opened after that will go to the bottom.  I can go to View, click Icons, then go back to Lists and they will be in alphabetical order until I close the program and go back to it again, then they are out of order again.  The same will happen if I have them in order under List-Icons.  This happens in QuickBooks, My Documents, Word, EXCEL and all other programs.  It is very time consuming to find the CORRECT folder or file when I never know where it might appear. How did you file them?abcd---1234

http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/system/fwfilemanagement.htmlAs an example, if I MAKE a new folder for My Documents, I set up the folder while in My Documents, then file various files in that folder.  When I leave My Documents and return, the new folder may be anywhere, but it is there.  I will then go to View, Arrange Icons by Name and they will be in alphabetical order.  When I leave and return they will be out of order again. In broad terms I think you have to tell it to remember the folder options (Arrange Icons by Name) & reset all the folders to those options as well.
It's not rocket science.  FED is right.

Right-click any white space inside the My Documents folder, and make sure Auto Arrange and Arrange Files by Name is selected.

If you don't mind losing everything HP then you could delete the partitions, re-partition and re-install.

I would ask HP if they can supply the Restore CDs.Tell me if I'm wrong, but couldn't he just have put the XP disc in his drive, and chosen an option to re-install, w/o keeping any of the settings? It would not let me delete the Hp_pavillion partition because of some of the settings were being used or something.  If you really want to erase your HD and start over,

Solve : Generic Host Process for Win32 Services...?

Last night when we go home...We started up our computer (XP) and once logged on, got a "send error report" message.  The problem was with "Generic Host Process for Win 32 Services"

Solve : Desktop Image Migrating??

Answer»

It's not really a big deal, but it caused a ruckus in the office AMONG the some of the people here who thought we'd been hacked and the sky was falling.

On one computer on our network, the USER changed her DESKTOP image (via Internet Explorer's Use as Desktop when she right-clicked the image) on Friday night. When the staff came in early Monday morning, that same desktop image appeared on a different machine, which happens to be a Citrix server. Both computers are Windows NT 4.0 as far as I know. (I know the user's machine is, and I'm told the Citrix server is as well.)

I don't have direct access to the Citrix server to investigate (had to walk them through the process of changing the desktop image because they were convinced it was evil somehow) further, but can anyone tell me how a local desktop preference like that migrated to another machine? They seem to be convinced that the Citrix server wasn't restarted between the time that the desktop images changed, but I can't confirm or deny that.

As a side note, I had to spend twenty minutes explaining that we did not need a "FIREWALL or something" between our machines **inside the network** to keep the scourge of migrating desktop backgrounds from murdering us all in our beds as we sleep.

Apparently, before I got here this morning, they were convinced the whole network was infected with teh haxx0r and freaking out at the idea of having to wipe the machines and reload them.

If I could explain how it happened, I think it would calm things down here. Are those the only changes you saw made on the server? The network is behind a firewall, correct?

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]Control panel admin tools........click the events view logs...what does it tell you?Hi there. Thanks for the responses.

I am in a different area of the company from the Citrix server, but as there is still some ?!?!? over the desktop image changing, I am going to head over tomorrow and deal with it in person.

We are behind a firewall, and the Citrix server is in all other ways functioning normally. (This much I can see from my end.)

I will look at the event log. That should be enlightening. Thank you for reminding me of it. I'll post more after I'm able to actually sit in front of that keyboard tomorrow and let you guys know what the resolution is.I bet this will be an interesting reply .......oops i have just seen someone go flying pass the window....... I am sure Nostradamus predicted this.

Where did she obtain the background?

Did the user who changed the background log in on the other machines with her account?Kathy:

If you believe your LAN's antivirus programs have been compromised, you may try some free, online virus scans on the machine believed to be infected:

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-51,GGLD:en&q=free+online+virus+scans

Regards,
DocHere's the resolution:

I went to the computer where the problem originated from. I asked her to show me what she did to change the desktop image.

At this point, she said it was odd, because "it made her do it twice before it was changed".

She then changed the image on her desktop, logged into a terminal server, said, "See?", then changed the desktop image on the terminal server.

I don't know why I didn't think of this. This is the most obvious way to see a change on the terminal server. I'm still beating my head against the wall.

In my defense, I didn't know and hadn't been told up to that point that she was logging into the terminal server, and I when they showed me the OFFENDING desktop image before, it was on her regular desktop. Urk.

I feel like such a noob.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Solve : Self-Expansion?!?

Answer»

Does anyone know why Windows sometimes automatically expand in disk size?  I installed it awhile ago and although I installed and saved everything else on my other hard drive, the one it is on keeps on saying its full (3GB, what do you expect).

However, I don't know if I should reinstall Windows, because when I tried, it automatically chooses the one that already has Windows and tells me that obviously, there's no disk SPACE left!

So please, is there anyway I can get rid of duplicate files and the LIKE, or is there anyway I can reinstall Windows and STUFF to fix this low disk space problem?

Thanks!
LawWhat is the o/s used!Sorry about that!  It's Windows XP.  Bigger hard drive REQUIRED:So do I just reinstall it on the other bigger hard drive?Yes:>http://www.windowsreinstall.com/Thanks man.  I'll try it out and see if it works first.  No problems.happy to help! Quote

Sorry about that!  It's Windows XP.

The main reasons Windows XP requires a lot of Hard Disk Drive space are:

  • Virtual memory
  • Service pack 2
  • Additional updates

Reserve at least 10GB for Windows XP to be on the safe side.Arrrgh... I'm trying to reinstall it on the other hard drive which is a lot bigger, but it won't LET me or something.  Do I have to get rid of this copy first and if I do, how so?  Downgrade and then upgrade it?   Quote

You can not move Windows XP to another Hard Disk Drive. Reformatting is one of the few options you have.

Solve : Boot Disk Failure?

If safe mode does not work, the installation of Windows is most likely damaged.

Try selecting the last known good configuration instead. Please could you advise how to get to the last known configuration, as i can not get past the screen with boot disk failure on it. Please help.   Quote

The good last known configuration option will not be available when you encounter a boot disk failure first.

Be certain that HDD 0 is set as the first boot device in the BIOS.

This is what you usually SEE when the hard drive has failed and is what happened to my hard drive when I was using Millennium Edition.

How old is the computer?

Can you boot to a bootdiskette A:\> prompt and use fdisk or dir /p to see any files on the drive?

You can download an ME OEM bootdisk image from...

BOOTDISKS

You'll have to download it to another computer's hard-drive (not directly to a floppy) and then double-click on the file with a clean formatted floppy in the A: drive.

And this will help you retrieve the ProductKey IF you can read the drive.

You can then put it into your computer's A: drive and start up. When you get to the first screen choose Minimal Boot and press Enter. At the prompt type:

A:\>EDIT C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.DAT , The file will open, then use the keyboard Alt, Arrow & Enter keys to get to EDIT on the top of the file, then Arrow down to FIND, type in - ProductKey - press Enter, and make a note of the number:

It will look like: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

Hi,

THANK you for your reply, i have tried this but it says that it cannot find a match so i was unable to find the key number.  Any other SUGGESTIONS.  Do you think i need to get a new Hard drive they have had the computer a while.
Please advise.

Solve : Clearing the Hard Drive?

Answer»

Alright... so I am working with a pretty screwed up computer right now. It is running Win98. I have made back-up copies of all the Word and Excel files on floppies and now I think I want to flatten the hard drive... clear it all and start from new. How do I do this? Detailed instructions would be GREAT.... in easy to understand terms haha. ThanksNitro:

Basic steps:

1. Make sure your Windows 98 CD is not very badly scratched and is not an upgrade (but a full version) CD.

2. Back up all the files you want to save to a CD (if you have a CD-R or CD-RW optical drive) or to floppy disks.

3. Make a Windows 98 or Me bootable floppy disk.

4. Restart your computer with the BOOT disk (you do not have to enable CD-ROM support yet).

5. At the command prompt type FDISK and press Enter.

6. Follow the instructions to enable large disk support, delete all the PARTITIONS, make ONE large partition formatted with FAT32 (not FAT or FAT16)

7. Restart the computer with the boot disk still in the floppy drive (you do not have to enable CD-ROM support yet).

8. At the command prompt (i.e. the A:\>) type FORMAT C: and press Enter.

9. When the format operation is complete, restart your computer (this time be sure to enable CD-ROM support).

10. Put the Windows 98 CD in the optical drive.

11. At the command prompt, type D:\Setup and press Enter.

12. The Windows 98 setup program will begin; just follow the instructions on your monitor.

Solve : weird virus question???

Answer»

Is it possible that some type of virus can hide somewhere other than on the HARD drive of a single hard drive computer?

I'm running XP on a gateway and had a bad hit on my machine a couple of months back. I worked on it with varying degrees of success for recovery with Microsoft and gateway support before eventually deciding to wipe the thing and start fresh.
I reformatted the hard drive and reloaded my windows system and this strange circle thing started cropping up in the upper left corner of the User Log in master (post-boot up) screen. I've since recently moved to Switzerland and initially picked up a lot of spyware/adware junk. The virus was a backdoor piece of garbage (backdoor.w32.poebot.b ) was it's latest incarnation, i believe. Anyway, So i reformatted the system again. Twice for good measure!! Loaded my new F-Secure software, and it was able to disable these virus associated files where NORTON could only find them and fail!!!
Anyway, though the damage is now minimal as the thing can't launch or activate. I still have (sometimes, like MAYBE at 2 out of every 5 bootings) this same weird circle, sometimes thick, sometimes thin, in the upper left corner of my login screen, and also, accompanying this, a kind of weak (slightly, speckled with pieces missing) displayscreen. Also the intrusive circle has launched itself on my user desktop near the bottom of the right side. These things are very weird, and actually move about (seriously) when i click on START MENU - TURN OFF COMP.  As if the thing knows what i'm trying to do, and wants to let me know it will try to interfere? It was killing my system (it and the ADDITIONAL spyware stuff it was launching, before F-Secure foroze it's Internet activity. But I can't figure out how in the *censored* it is surviving Complete Hard Drive formats???
Is this a virus tthing, or a flaw in Windows XP?
anybody familiar with this?
And finally, if so? How do I get rid of this???Second Question with regard to this issue?

The first time I reformatted my hard drive, I did it with a Microsoft or Gateway (can't recall which )engineer's help.

I ended up in a BlueScreen Formatting area (I think it was out of their utility disc menu, or perhaps the Bios??)
It eventually led to the option of writing zeros to all data on the disc. Which I did and which took about 4 hrs maybe???
However, when i since reformatted again (3 times) here in Europe. I did it in DOS Format C: This only took maybe 20 minutes??? Then the next time I did the same, and for good measure, using the Gateway driver's operating cd. Formatted C: but from command within D:
This took a bit longer, maybe 40 minutes.
Anyway. My questions are?
A). Were these full wipes of my hard drive? (It said each time that all data would be removed. )
B). If so, was the difference in time due to the possibility that the Format C: command only needs to write over the spaces of the Hard Disc where there is working data?Have you done a quick or a full format?

Are there any hidden partitions located on your Hard Disk Drive that are normally used for recovery purposes?hi raptor.

well, that's the question i'm not certain of? (did you see my second post???)

i thought i did a full format (definitely did that the first time, when I watched the Blue screen data pulses writing zeros to the entire hard drive.

Let's say for definite that the first and last times of the 4 formats of C: were Full Formats.
Could I still have something that wasn't wiped? And where??
As for partitions. I recall that the machine was set up having 37.99 gigs and a small unpartitioned space of 8MB's. didn't understand that bitThere can be a hidden partition that is used for recovery means. This can often only be found on brand PCs.

Do you have a full copy of Windows XP or is it a recovery CD?

You may first wish to experiment with computer security by familiarizing yourself with the following tools:
Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Trend Micro Housecall
-- Online anti virus scanner.

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner

Firewalls
Using only ONE firewall is advised. Dual firewalls may cause problems.
Using a hardware firewall and a software firewall is even more adviced.

ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

Removal tools
The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either diagnostic tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

HijackThis
-- Manual malware remover. Post the HijackThis log generated only if requested!
McAfee Stinger
-- Virus removal tool. No substitute for a fully functional virus scanner!
CWshredder
-- CoolWebSearch removal tool. Widely known and persistant Hijacker. It's a repair CD. But it contains an entire Copy of XP for non-repairable problems. It's both.
Thnx for the ideas you've posted already.

One more question?
any good pop-up blocker that i can download off the web (that isn't the one on SP2 for XP) see my other post titled Dr. Watson Grrr as to why i can't at the moment use the SP2 pop-up blocker.
thnxif anyone's interested in seeing this picture thing i've been describing, i can do a print screen next time it happens and paste it into a Paint file.
then maybe i can attach it onto a message or e-mail it or something???

it really is a strange piece of work.

ALSO. I guess that the answer to my question is NO. A virus can't hide anywhere else but on the hard drive. Not in memory or anywhere else, etc?The memory is wiped clean upon reset. In order for a virus to situate itself in the memory, it would first need to be loaded onto the Hard Disk Drive.

There is such a thing as a CMOS virus but unless you have recently flashed your BIOS, I do not think that this applies to you.

You will have to thoroughfully scan and secure your computer with the applications I have provided you links for. Once you understand how Internet security works, you can look into reformatting otherwise the problem will simply re-occur.Posting  multi_threads is futileanything is possible. believe me.

That does not at all sound as a legitimate error message.

Have you downloaded FILES that could have been infected?

Can you enter safe mode?Larry:

Yeah, i've seen that one a few times.  That's Windows XP's new "kinder, gentler" way of displaying a blue screen of death (BSOD).

Did you recently add a new expansion card, new drive, or install a new program?

One thing you may try is to boot to the Last Known Good Configuration.  When you start your computer, just before the error message, keep pressing the F8 key till you see a menu of boot options.

You will see Safe Mode and Last Known Good Configuration.  The last known good config is a copy of the registry Windows made the last time it successfully booted.   Choose that option and see if  your computer starts successfully.

Let us KNOW if it does not.

Regards,
Doc

Thanks guys for the REPLIES. Yeah i'll try all the options (Safe Mode, Last Known Good Config & Start Normally) But there's no happen. I'll try "Start Normally and Last know good config" go to Windows XP logo and after it will reset and goto the option again. That's the routine did not go to the windows successfully. I'll try the "Safe Mode" it display a log files or something then hang the computer. I can't format because my important files is there.

What can i do guys. Pls. help me again. Thanks a lot.Try repairing your installation of Windows Xp.

Solve : need major help?

Answer»

hey everyone,

im in dyer need of help, i saw another POST like what i have but dont knwo if i should request there or not, so SORY.  but this is whats wrong.

starting yesterday my computer turned off without any wanring at all, i turned it back on thinking it was a game i was playing at the time, so it worked, i shut it off that night and everyhting, this morning i got back, have about 2 hours on the comp, and it shuts off, after the fans stop and everything i hear in my headphones the sound goin..bump boomf..ya know?....after that i look down at my computer..the lights are still on, even the loading light, then it restarts, and when it hits the first startup screen it restarts, and continues...i have to unplug it for about 20 minutes before i can go on it for about an hour.  i cant run any big programs, i cant burn discs, so i will lose all information if i dont get help.

reinstalling windows by upgrade doesnt help either.  i have winxp pro, all my virus scanners...(5) show no viruses.....all spyware and adaware programs say computer is clean......to the looks of it my comp is cleaner then anything, but whats going on?

last i did on the comp was playing a game...before that was surfing and making my own websites, getting ready to sell some templates...i had one virus warning when i clicked a wrong link on google...but i deleted that file, and that was a while ago...

any help would be appreciated.  this justr started happening out of the blue.  if u need a dxdiag report or something i may be able to get it.

please helpwell what do you need?rgr that, but i have to wait another hour before it lets me on to do anything....cant even get to safe mod...its comin tho.here is the dxdiag...uploaded..this is a txt file...

http://rapidshare.de/files/3416128/dxd.rtf.html
sory, i wasnt able to copy and paste as it was to long....california.USA...and on my downstairs comp.

This sounds suspiciously like a PSU problem. Have you added any new hardware lately? Is the machine overclocked? Have you cleaned out the dust bunnies lately? Is the machine stuck in a cubby hole or out in the open? Good air circulation is a must.well i just tried to go back on it, got into safe MODE........and it shuts down.  i just installed the 6600 video card no more then 2 weeks ago....but i have had no problems till now...and i think i had the same problem when i had the geforce 4 in there, but i had to WIPE the harddrive completly.  in this case i have some really needed information that i cannot lose.  but idk...i may.

just before i put in the card i cleaned it out with the air bottles u buy......dust is off the fans and everything, the case is open on one side to let cool air in, but it has one of the screens u by to make sure that it stays somewhat safe, i clean out the dust every chance i get (once every two weeks)...

true, i have checked it out , but after leaving the comp off for about an hour, it continues to shut off like it did, and its nice and cool...i felt behind it and its hot air, but ive delt with that amount of heat and had no troubles before.  i doubt its the heating issue.  but im going to go ahead and open it up...clean...and put an air conditioner right on it..if it stays on for a while with that cold air..then i get a better cooling system.

besides that though, any ideas as to anything else at all?  cause i would really hate to have the hard drive like ried within a week, when i thought it was my cooling system u know.the reason i cant go in and report it is because it wont let me, so thats the only way i can think of even getting onto the system long enough to check...riverside....and why did u delete the anti virusd things..and all your other posts

but yea, me look for as much as POSSIBLE...

-----
so far i need to check my cooling system.....and i need to get on there for as long as possible to get those antivirus programs and hijack ths.searching the net?, maby for pictures, thats all i myself use the net for.....i do have another account for my friend wich comes over every so often, u think the problem is there?Maybe the poster has advanced supervisory staff helping our loyal employees course    who knowshuh?? lolsolved? serious or messin with me??, was it the heating, are u sure...

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prmd_stp_mncs.aspJBTB:

A memory dump is the standard operating procedure for Windows when there is a system failure.  For example, the default setting in the Windows XP System Properties is to make a small memory dump (a FILE named minidump, which is created on the C: drive) when a system failure occurs.  You may then send the 64 KB file to a system administrator, programmer, or some other expert to interpret what is CAUSING the failure.

You or i PROBABLY won't be able to decipher the minidump file ourselves.   What we may be able to do is figure out what is causing the system failure by answering a few questions:

Are you installing Windows or was there already an operating system installed?

If you were installing Windows, what version were you installing? (was it Windows XP Home)?

If you were not installing Windows, what else may have been changed just prior to the error?  (For example, did you add a new video card?  or a new program?)

Please LET us know so Merlin, Raptor, or i may know what to suggest next.

Solve : My sound just goes away until i reboot?

Answer»

I have the Gateway Media center AthlonXP64 3500+ and have owned it 4 weeks now, out of the 4 weeks, i guess 6 times the sound just goes out, I do not have to be on the computer for it to do this, and if I restart then as soon as the computer is shutting off before the restart you can hear the windows  sound it makes shutting down and booting up, or I can just PRESS the sleep button, it does not go on mute and i checked the device manager and all showed to be ok, can any body help with this? This could be a hardware problem, and not a problem with windows.  Have you tried contacting gateway? Thanks for the reply, yes Gateway SAID it was nothing i should worry about and to restore my computer back before the problem started, did that, but I still can not help but to worryHa, It sounds they have CRAPPY CUSTOMER support.
Well, I am not completely sure what your problem is, or what you are asking, or how to even go about approaching that problem.  There are many other people on here that are very experienced, and WOULD be more than willing to help.  It may just take them a while to reply, so I suggest that you should be patient.  In the meantime...

All I can suggest is that you update your drivers for your sound card.  If you NEED help with that, come here or go to the "drivers" section for help.See to it that the correct drivers are installed. Do not use Windows default drivers.Tell gateway to either send someone out.......or ask them to replace it.......as you have carried out their instuctions and nothing has changed..........the sound is it the wav sound on start up?

Solve : Toolbar issue?

Answer»

The application tags on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen that allow you to jump between applications/web pages are gone.  I can only utilize one application - IE I can not bounce between  Micrsoft Money and a web site.  I hope this is just some set up issue that will be easy to fix.  Thanks for any help. Are you referring to the taskbar?

Have you perhaps moved it across the screen or hidden it?

You can configure nearly every aspect of the taskbar by going to the following menu:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Taskbar and Menu Start

May only apply to Windows XP Home and Professional.Do you mean the start button......I do mean the task bar, I can see the start button and the shortcut icons to the right of it, but just blank in between.  I went to Control Panel/task and start menu, but did not have an option to address this issue.  I've tried to see if I can "UNCOVER" hidden icons to no avail.  right -click on the bottom task bar got to toolbars.....and tick quick launch....Quick Launch is there, NORMALLY when I open Internet Explorer, a "tab" appears in the task bar, if I were to open IE again, another "tab" would appear and I could look at two different web pages by clicking on either "tab"  - The Tabs are what will no longer show up.
I keep thinking this has to be a simple set up button that I don't know, but I did not change anything to facilitate this happening - now I'm thinking virus. Are the tabs hidden underneath eachother? This is a function which is available in Windows XP and is enabled by default. Click on the tab once to see a list with tabs currently hidden underneath eachother.

Solve : I am having big problems installing a 200 GB Hard Drive.?

Answer»

I have installed a few hard drives before. I am thinking to myself that I shouldn't be having this problem. Here are my problems. I have a Pentium 4 computer. The hard drive currently in it is simply too small. So I elected to install a 200 GB HD. I am using Windows XP Prof. The HD is from Western Digital. I am installing Windows Xp as a completely NEW OS. The BIOS sees the HD just fine, and the XP installation seems to be going well with out any problems. When I get to the part during the installation about partitioning this 200 GB drive the only size that Windows will recognize is 14245 MB. I am trying for an NTFS PARTITION. I can try to change this amount , but it will not accept any changes to a HIGHER amount. So my capacity is roughly 17.5 MB out of 200 GB.
Disk Management shows the amount mentioned. I was advised to format this partition while I am in Disk Management. Unfortunately, when I select FORMAT it is greyed out and can not be selected. I have tried to install this drive as one large drive, and as a partitioned drive. Both work out from this stand POINT. The problem is that I can not get Windows to see all 200 GB's no matter what I try. I admit it has been quite some time since I installed a hard drive. I could be missing a simple step. That's okay too. At this point I need a good laugh. Can any one tell me what I am doing wrong? When you get to the partition screen, delete the old partition(s) and create a new partition in the unallocated space. I believe I have figured out the 200 GB installation problem, thanks

Solve : Installing xp on compaq 2500 have disc but keeps shutting down?

Answer»

Hallo everyone, I'm new to this kind of thing so apologies in advance if I bugger it up.  I was given a COMPAQ 2500 notebook with some "issues" so I thought I'd try reinstalling XP to wipe it clean and remove all the other persons stuff.  I was a little worried about using my xp disc from the old HP desktop but did it anyway.  The normal screens CAME up and it asked if I wanted to delete the partition which I did because there was not enough room to install XP on a new partition and it looked to be loading but then it got to the end and said it couldn't start and shut down.  Now when I try to reboot I get an error message saying invalid boot ini FILE then next... following file corrupt:
\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM - it then says to put the CD which I do and I get another message saying press any key to boot from CD but  just as it gets to the screen that says R for repair or Enter to start the computer shuts down.  Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Is the XP disk you are using an OEM disk? What does the label on the disk say?The disc was the one that came with my desktop bought new from Harvey Norman.  It says Microsoft Windows xp home edition with a holographic Genuine/Microsoft down the bottom of the disc.
ThanksThe message you are getting indicates a corrupt registry hive. We're kind of stuck here because we're not supposed to help with "illegal" installations and XP's license is limited to one system. Let me just say that if I were you I'd start over from scratch.Call HP and ask whether they have a restore disc for that computer?  If they have it, they will ship it to you for a fee.  This would cost much less than buying the OS at retail cost.

Solve : temporary profile becomes default?

Answer»

Hi
A few days ago when i LOGGED into my asus laptop it told me it was unable to load the user profile with the typical message and loaded a temporary profile.. since then, when i have i logged onto my account (account name=user), it does not show any message like this but still logs in to the same temporary profile (that is, changes i make to this temporary profile ARE being saved).

in the documents and settings of my hard drive the "user" folder still contains all the correct files ETC., nothing seems to have happened to it however, in the home page of my computer, where it shows "shared documents" and "user's documents", "user's documents" is essentially empty- and thus the temporary profile. when i right click on this "user's documents" it tells the location for this shortcut is not in fact C:\Documents and settings\user (where i assume it is meant to be) but C:\documents and settings\TEMP.YOUR-A2858FAB54, which seems to be the temporary profile windows has created. any SUGGESTIONS as to how to GET it to load the actual profile rather than this temporary one?

THANKS

Solve : ASUS Motherboard Make Disk for DOS Menu. No "a" drive, but comp. says yes.?

Answer»

I don't have an "a" floppy drive.  I have installed a new hard drive, (only one in system) put XP on it and have now begun the motherboard installation.  I bought an external floppy drive, thinking that this would help the installation.  I am assuming that I don't need the "NVIDIA RAID Driver Page" nor the "JMicron JMB36X RAID Driver Page," which leaves me with the FreeDOS command prompt.  Upon choosing that, I am faced with:

    C:\>

I WENT to www.freedos.org, but I wasn't able to figure out what to do.  If I shut down the computer and restart, it prompts me to insert the installation CD for the motherboard, so...what do I do now?what does FreeDOS have to do with installing windows drivers? Are you trying to install XP on a RAID array?
What motherboard? The motherboard is an ASUS P5N-E SLI. I don't really know what a RAID array is, (but I think that it requires multiple hard DRIVES) nor what FreeDOS has to do with anything; I am ignorant regarding many aspects of computers, but am trying to learn.  I only have one hard drive, if that helps.  After installing XP and during the installation of the motherboard software, I see a screen saying:

"Welcome to ASUS Motherboard Make Disk for DOS Menu
                                                                                        Rev.1.0

    1)    NVIDIA RAID Driver Page
    2)    JMicron JMB36x RAID Driver Page
    3)    FreeDOS command prompt
Please choose 1 ~ 3:"

I posted here because this is on an XP machine, but maybe I should re-post on another PART of this forum (?)  I mentioned that about the "a" drive because during at least one of my multiple attempts to install everything, the computer kept LOOKING for a disk in the "a" drive.  The external floppy disk is seen as the "b" drive, but I don't know how to do AWAY with the non-existent "a" drive.Okay, I will delete this question if possible tomorrow and re-post as two separate issues...well, probably just one because I have given up on the installation of that software; I think that the computer will function without it.Reassign the drive to A. Oh ok thanks. Just wanted to know.I didn't think you believed in those benchmark sites, BC_Programmer.

I've used all three, from what I can see WinXP SP3 still outperforms Vista SP2 and yes even Win7 in most first person shooter games. I perfer Win7 for pretties and DirectX10, but was horrified it still dropped fps (DirectX9 only games). If using DirectX10 and the newer graphic cards which support it however, that's another story, the graphic card will boost the performance up using it's hardware.

Vista is slower than XP, even with all the bells and whistles turned off, and it still goobles up almost twice the amount of memory doing it - loading everything, once for system RAM and then copies that to graphic card RAM.

Maybe that's just my personal experience with benchmarking them with the same games on the same hardware... and the 100,000s of other's on the net. I thought Win7 would outperform it too, but nope.

I would suggest, older systems and directx9 graphic cards = stick with WinXP SP3, anything newer upgrade to Win7 for future proofing, networking, multitasking and pretties. If your got Vista, highly recommend replacing it with Win7 Ultimate - it's Vista without half the mess.ignore the above post. Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 10, 2010, 12:38:53 AM

Although it’s been common knowledge among computer professionals for some time, there is now official research that proves that Windows new Vista operating system is slower and less responsive than Windows XP. The Florida-based development and research company, Devil Mountain Software, compared performance benchmarks between the two operating systems. The end result? Windows XP outperformed Vista in every single test.

This is with Vista having 2GB and WinXP having only 1GB to run with.

The tests also showed that Vista “locked up” most additional memory added to a computer. This means that by upgrading a laptop from 1 GB to 2 GB of RAM, researchers were only able to improve Vista’s performance by 4%!

Benchmarks all depend on your hardware for end results. Vista is considered a hog, it would gooble up your system. If you don't have the resources it will struggle (low spec computers should stick with WinXP), if you do have the money for more memory and processing and graphic card memory, then it's still throwing it to a bit of waste (Win7 has a reduced thumbprint), but by all means, simply ignore that and it will run.

Maybe when I wasn't looking they patched up Vista for free to Win7 anyways to get rid of all the issues? You are truly an idiot. I'm not even going to bother responding to that because I already have in numerous other posts. Quote from: johngetter on December 09, 2010, 07:56:36 PM

Is this the computer that has the one gig of RAM that you were wanting to upgrade to two gigs?

Did you buy the new RAM yet? I'd recommend at least two gigs for vista.

So now it’s all out in the open: Randall C. Kennedy is pathological liar who created a fake persona in the form of one Craig Barth, CTO of Devil Mountain Software. These are He is the clowns clown who claimed that Server 2008 performed substantially better than Windows Vista SP1 despite the fact that they are two editions of THE SAME OPERATING SYSTEM! Kennedy is also the fool who, after making asinine assertions about Windows Vista and Win7 thread counts on his InfoWorld blog, proceeded to embarrass himself in an online debate with Thom Holwerda (of OSNEWS.COM) that highlighted what a know-nothing blowhard he was.

However, that wasn’t enough for Randall, not by a long shot. Ever obsessed with trashing Microsoft, AND appearing to be a big shot, he actually published, via his fake company blog, a bunch of absurd statistics regarding Windows 7 memory usage. His lack of understanding about some fundamental memory counters and usage behavior in NT (and specifically Win7 with superfetch enabled) ultimately led to the discovery of one of the most unbelievable bits of tech media drama this industry has ever seen: http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=31024&tag=content;wrapper .

Now, I find it odd that some in the tech press are surprised to find out that Kennedy was the defacto boss of Devil Mountain, as running Office Bench throws up lots of content with Kennedy’s bio and articles sprinkled throughout. What blew me away was hearing that Craig Barth was an invention of Randall’s mind. You have to be kidding me?!! And IDG took this long to figure this out?! It was ZDNet, a competing blog site, over the course of a few days that managed to uncover this!?

No, the real story isn’t that Randall Kennedy is an incompetent, disgraceful boob (anyone with half a clue knew this already). The REAL story is that the tech media (and even major media) outlets single sourced their information from Devil Mountain Software or Craig Barth without vetting their source AND, most importantly, providing alternative sources that could verify or debunk Kennedy’s (AKA Devil Mountain / Craig Barth’s) claims. People like Computer World’s Gregg Keizer should be ASHAMED of themselves for simply acting as a mouthpiece for Kennedy/Barth/DMS without doing ANY real investigative journalism. IDG NEVER validated Kennedy’s bio, NEVER validated the benchmark software he provided for them (as detailed in the ZDNet expose) and never validated the statements that Kennedy made.

In short, IDG and the broader media allowed one man to run a massive FUD campaign against Microsoft by parroting his statements when it served their purposes of feeding a BIAS or driving hits to their sites. Disgusting doesn’t go far enough in describing the conduct of IDG, InfoWorld, ComputerWorld or the rest of the tech media that allowed this to go unchecked for well over a decade.

Why bother upgrading at all? Windows 98 works for Excel, Word, and Office applications. Most people upgrade because they have more demanding applications, mostly games. Here's a surprise, a LOT of newer games are being written exclusively for DX10. And as I already proved, you can't get DX10 running on XP. Although I find that whole debate pointless. Idiots with no clue like to say "I'm running Crysis in DX10 mode and Ultra High" Well, obviously if they are just running it through the wrapper, most of the functions are probably just stubs, so you get no damned advantage. They keep saying it like it's a good thing, Christ, I don't understand why people weren't eager to backport DX 9.0c to Windows 98SE in the same fashion.

Vista, at a glance, should run games slower then XP; and this is true, if you're running a 7 or 8 year old system. Vista has to translate DX9 and previous games (in a way) so that it supports the new driver engine (this very same engine that idiotic morons like to pretend doesn't exist); however, at the same time, it has better RAM manipulation and deals with the system more effectively (the new kernel that the new driver engine happens to interface with, also). It's like those dumbasses saying that games run slower with Aero On then with Aero of, which doesn't make any sense since windows shuts off aero when you start a full-screen application, so obviously they are just making shite up, which is pretty par for the course.

Windows XP did NOT because the fan favourite instantly. There were holdouts for years holding onto Windows 98SE and refusing to upgrade to XP because.... wait for it... wait for it...

It was better for gaming!

The similiarities here amuse me. A bunch of random tards who are sticking to an old OS for no real reason other then their hate of change (And don't PULL the old "OMG new OS's need so much morez RAM" because people pull that *censored* with every OS release, Some people even make up companies and purport their data as the truth, and then morons will use those entirely invented facts as if they are true. despite the fact that they simply don't understand the basic concepts involved) If you don't want to use a lot of RAM, run CP/M. I'd explain what that is but I'm SURE you either already have or are forming yet another gargantuan conspiracy theory involving microsoft "stealing" CP/M or some other false nonsense. You can even find sites that express that. The only thing that finally convinced them to switch to XP was newer games looking a *censored* of a lot better and working a lot faster, or simply requiring, DX9, which wasn't available for windows 98 (because of the evil bill, obviously).

I also love how people who probably pirated the OS, or bought it 7 years ago (which would translate to like a 10th of a cent a day) still think that MS owes them something as collosal an engineering undertaking as backporting a hardware/software interface that currently communicates using a new driver architecture to a totally new kernel back to a 7 year old operating system that they had forked from long before they had even considered the design implications of DX10. Come on, you used the OS you bought for 7 years. And if you pirated it, you're just a self-indulgent douche anyway and your demands are both unrealistic and not worth their time.

No they didn't. a few employees expressed an opinion. Most of whom were probably on teams totally unrelated to windows development. I just love how people seem to think that everybody working there works on everything. One afternoon somebody might be working on office, and the next a kernel mode keyboard driver. That's not the way it works, obviously. For all we know those people were on one of the office teams, or even one of the teams that works on mac software. No, it's just that we both happen, independently, to think that you are abusive language deleted by Allan and warning issuedAzzaboi:

All people are asking for is proof.  Not opinion.  Not hearsay.  Not confabulation.  Proof.

If you can't provide proof, don't sell it as 100% fact.

Anyone can claim "I tried this and I can confirm that..."  While that, in of itself, is not bad, it should be taken as it is: a claim.

For example (and I'll throw myself under the bus for a minute--not the first time I've done so ), I've posted my own results from freezing hard drives to recover data.  I've even stated that I didn't know whether or not my positive results were simply correlation or that it could potentially work.  As BC mentioned in a rebuttal to my claims, he mentioned that modern hard drives and their liquid bearings would not show any positive result from this, as the bearings could freeze and actually prohibit movement!  Others have claimed that their results work (possibly on older drives without liquid bearings), but again...they're just that: claims.

Should they be taken as absolute fact that it works?  No.

Should it be taken as "anyone who says it works is completely full of ____?"  Only if they try to sell it as 100% fact.

It should be taken as is: a claim.

Obviously, I can't reproduce my "positive results" as easily on every drive with mechanical problems.  If I had enough older hard drives with mechanical problems to play around with, I'd do some more experimenting myself (and probably post the results on Youtube or something).  Worst case scenario, I would have ended up destroying several older drives that I don't care about (and let people know not to do this based on this).  Best case, I could get some data back from all of them (provided that they have the same mechanical problem, they don't use liquid bearings, and that I've taken all necessary precautions to avoid having condensation form on the drives themselves), and put some disclaimer of "do at your own risk" alongside it.

In your case: anyone can claim that Vista and 7 are slower than XP.  How many of them are willing to go through the trouble of having 2-3 PCs with identical hardware running the different operating systems with multiple benchmarks (both synthetic and real-world) to make an honest comparison?  Obviously the guys at the various benchmark sites have this luxury.

Benchmark sites are fine...as long as you're willing to use the articles as intended and not "cherry pick" statements from it to try and sell a point.  Multiple benchmark sites would be better, as people can fact-check against those (as well as what they know) and make their own informed decision.

Unlike the hard drive freezing example, your claim can easily be tested against and confirmed/refuted without a whole lot of effort.

If you continue to post anything short of this while trying to sell your point, ignoring evidence that contradicts your point, then you're simply trolling--POSTING only to solicit negative responses and start conflict.

Solve : How to turn off an annoying sound in XP?

Answer»

Greetings,

I have a Dell Laptop and run Windows XP home edition.

I would like to turn off the annoying beep I get whenever adjusting the volume control.  I don't want to mute the speaker icon but SILENCE the beep I get whenever adjusting the volume level.  Also there is an annoying clicking sound that XP provides sometimes when I change from task to task.

I have explored "sounds, speech and audio devices" and selected "none" for sounds available for everything I can find, but the beep persists.

Any ideas would be, as usual, greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
sampYou can change the "Default beep" entry to a silent WAV file.

The "CLICK" sound is the default navigation sound; it's in the sounds PANEL as Windows Explorer->Complete Navigation.

Hi again,

I found the "default beep" entry but don't know how to change it to a silent WAV file....

I also selected "none" for the sound in Windows Explorer>Complete Navigation   but it still clicks whenever I shift between tasks...

I must be missing SOMETHING somewhere...

Thanks for the reply and any further help would be kindly received...

Thanks,
Samp Quote from: samp on December 15, 2010, 06:51:29 AM

I found the "default beep" entry but don't know how to change it to a silent WAV file....

You have to create one

Start sound recorder (Start->Run sndrec32 or Start->All Programs->Accessories->Entertainment->Sound Recorder)

Then you can Save the 0-length sound somewhere; in my test I saved it as C:\empty.wav for example.

Then change the default beep entry by selecting "Browse.." and choosing the empty wav file. You can assign it to whichever items you want to be silent. Most other sounds other then the default beep entry respect when you have cleared the sound (for the "Navigation Complete" for example, you should be able to just say "none" and you won't hear it anymore)

Good day,

Just wanted to thank you for your help.  Problem fixed.

Also to thank all who have helped me in the past and got me out of some STICKY situations.
Much appreciated.  Wonderful site and people who assist therein.

I went back to "Tools" on IE8, INTERNET OPTIONS, Browser history settings, View Files and they are still in there.  what do you THINK?  I think you should forget about them. They aren't hurting anything. You dont think they are somekind of spyware then?I don't think they are anything you need to worry about. But if it will make you feel better why not download MalwareBytes and run a scan? Thanks will do it now and let you know!

Does ANYONE know how many times I can install Windows XP Home Edition on a computer?

[glb]Flame[/glb]If its your pc .....then you can install it how many times you like.....if it for a member of the family......then the eula.....allows you to also do this....Ok great! Thanks a lot! (I just reformatted a HD today, and think I messed something up, and I MIGHT have to do it again...    Wanted to make sure I wasn't running out of chances lol  )

[glb]Flame[/glb]The perfect opportunity to get rid of Norton & McAfee.
AVG Free, Sygate and MSoft ANTISPYWARE are a good combination Flame.
Ps off your Realplayer & install Real Alternative instead.lol Thanks Fed! Although, this is not my new computer we're talking about... We're talking about the old computer... You know... The one what the Prince of Darkeness sent me   lol  Actually, I will have Norton, Microsoft AntiSpy and Sygate mixed with the Windows XP firewall

[glb]Flame[/glb]Also, how the RealPlayer got on this computer is still a mystery lol

[glb]Flame[/glb]Embeded with the aol install disk......spyware city.....real player?I do have AOL... Probably... Eiother that or I wante dot play a video and I needed to downlaod it... Probably just said what the heck lol

[glb]Flame[/glb]Use quicktime by apple.......or wmp.........I like WMP the most lol  I kind of have issues with Apple products... Don't care for them too much... I'm very picky when it comes to software

[glb]Flame[/glb]I thought the installation and subsequent activation of XP was limited if hardware changes were involved such as installing on a different computer?
(Maybe it's an URBAN myth)
I know W2k (xp on steroids) has no such activations or limitations.
BTW Flame, take a look at this link for your new installations (Raptor too) http://www.xona.com/2004/05/22.html although I have only read it very quickly it's one I plan to re-visit and slowly go through every suggestion. Thanks for the link! I'll have a look at that a little better when I have some extra time...

Hey, Flame:

The only time you may run into a problem is if you have made a major hardware CHANGE (like swapping out the motherboard).  The database at the Microsoft website may think this is a different computer and not let you register the operating system.  If this happens, you may still call Microsoft to register via the phone.  The phone number is displayed on the registration splash screen.

Solve : problems installing a 64 bit OS?

Answer»

I'm having problems installing a 64 bits OS on a newly build pc.
I managed to install XP 32bit without any problem, however since I've got 12Gb of RAM I need to install XP 64bit to be able to detect more than 4Gb. Everytime I TRY, I get a message that ACPI.sys is corrupted.
I've tried with 2 completely different installation CDS, I've updated the BIOS as well. There is nowhere in the BIOS where I can disable ACPI (I can only set the ACPI mode, not enable or disable it). I've tried pressing F7 when the CD boots to install as standard pc, but the only options it gives me are: ACPI multiprocessor, ACPI uniprocessor, and Other. The Other option needs a driver Floppy. I don't have a floppy drive.

Any clue of how I could work my way around this problem?

I am thinking of MAKING a new boot CD using the boot of Windows XP and the install of Windows XP x64. Could it work? What MBoard is this ? ?
You FAILED to mention that.Yeah sorry.

Solve : Windows can not load the locally stored profile?

Answer»

I've been searching ONLINE all day for solutions to this problem and NEED help.

I get the error message as I log onto my user profile that "Windows can not load the locally stored profile and the possible causes are due to insufficient security or a corrupt profile".

I have tried all suggestions that I can possibly find on the microsoft help website and created a new user profile (also an administrator) and tried to copy all files from the corrupt profile on the the new user profile but I'm being told "ACCESS Denied" on all of the files from the old profile.

Please help.  I just need to get all of my files one last time off of my original profile and then I can chuck this old computer out the window.  These files are detrimental to my lilvelyhood  You need to take ownership: HTTP://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421These are great directions but here is my problem when trying to take ownership:

Right click on the folder you want to take ownership of and hit properties
Then click the Security tab (I don't have a security tab)  Does this mean i'm not in safe MODE?  I've restarted 3 times while pushing F8.  Any suggestions on why I don't have the Security tab when entering the properties?Got it in safe mode.  I should see the security tab soon.  Will keep you posted. You have to choose safe mode from the boot option screen. As soon as the system boots start tapping the F5 key. From the next screen choose safe mode. Thanks Allen!!!! Finally accessed my files and are copying them to my new user profile.  Also headed out the door to find a flash drive with a lot of storage.  I wasn't kidding about chucking this computer out the window.  I use QuickBooks desktop and online versions frequently - Any suggestions on a new computer.  I need fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Solve : Screensaver won't start?

Answer»

I posted this once before, but I'm trying again. My screensaver in XP stops COMING on, for no apparent reason. I know that cordless mice sometimes cause this problem, but I'm not using one. I never have a problem GETTING it started again - just go into Desktop Properties and make some kind of CHANGE and click Apply. And it'll last for a few hours, coming on after a couple of minutes like it's supposed to. But then I'll do some work, leave the MACHINE, and notice later that the screensaver never started up again. It seems to happen randomly, not after I close out of any particular application. What applications are running in the background? Some programs may force the screensaver to be disabeled whilst operating.

Also make certain that if you are using an optical mouse, that it is not placed on a reflective surface.

I always set my monitor to go into stand-by mode after 3 minutes. Screensavers are a thing of the past with modern monitors.

Can't save enough power with the entire HUMAN race gone rampant. Thanks, Rap. I always close out of everything when I'm done working, and I'm using an optical mouse on a black mousepad. I would assume that if the screensaver isn't kicking in, then standby mode won't either, as they're both triggered by the same settings.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326719

Solve : slowlly computer?

Answer»

what can i do with a slow computer HO have windows xp profesional programs instaled.what setting and step to coud make the best performance for this.
they have 128 ram memory capacities.
please send e mail [email protected]

EMail addy removed to prevent SPAM...To run XP Pro at performance using only 128MB and a slow CPU, I suggest stripping down some of the services and features, then tweaking.

Be safe and ensure you know what your doing before making any changes.

Reduce resolution
Right click on your desktop and select properties.
Click on the settings tab and maybe adjust the graphics down and the color quality drop down box to Medium (16 Bit).
This depends how much quality vs performance you want.
Click OK.

Reducing effects for performance
Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop or in your start panel and select properties.
Next, Click on the Advanced tab and hit the setting button under performance.
On the visual effects tab, select Adjust for Best Performance and hit OK.
You can then check if you want any of them (or just leave them all off), again this is quality vs performance.
Hit OK once more to exit system properties.

Remove indexing service (for quick search)
This system process indexing allows you to search files quicker, but it's completely unnessesary and uses a large amount of memory. Go to the Control Panel and click Add/Remove Programs.  Click the Add/Remove Window Components.  Simply unclick the Indexing services and click next.

Upgrade
If you haven't already, ensure you update the computer to Service Pack 3 and have the latest updates. This is more stable, more secure *cough* for microsoft standards, and has slightly better performance.

Cleanup and manage
Every now and then you should run under Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools, the Disk Cleanup tool (to remove junk files and clutter) and then the Disk Defragmenter (to optimise hard drive access).

Remove un-needed startup programs
Click Start > Run > Type "msconfig". On the Startup tab untick the applications you know you won't need to automatically start on boot and reboot the computer to take effect. You can still run them manually or re-tick them later on.

Disable un-needed background services
Click Start > Run > Type "services.msc" and change the following, then reboot. Be careful changing these, making sure if you need them or not. By disabling ones you need (such as the printer) it will stop that device from working. Remember if later done the track you come to adding it, re-enable the service for it as well.

Alerter = Disabled
Application Layer Gateway Service = Manual
Application Management = Manual
Background Intelligent Transfer Service = Manual
ClipBook = Disable
COM+ Event System and COM+ System Application = Manual
Error Reporting Service = Disable (if not wanted) or Auto
Help and Support =  Disable (if not wanted) or Auto
Indexing Service = Disable
Messenger = Disable (if not wanted)
Performance Logs and Alerts = Manual or Disable
Telnet = Manual or Disable (if you don't use Telnet)
Themes =  Disable (if not wanted) or Auto
Uninterruptible Power Supply = Manual or Disable (if you don't have)
Wireless Zero Configuration = Auto or Disable (if you don't have)
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager = Manual or Disable (if you don't use remote desktop)

Registry tweaks
This is a bit more advance so make sure you know what your doing here as well as have a backup, etc. We will be using the registry, if your unsure don't do it, changes here can affect or prevent your computer from starting up. After making changes, reboot for it to take effect.

You can access registry... Start > Run "regedit"

Disable Prefetch for low memory systems, if system only has about 128megs of RAM. Not recommended to disable if you can get more memory (prefetching can speed up most used applications startup time), but since your very limited and don't want any hogs. Preloading programs could be sucking away your available RAM...
1. Go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\EnablePrefetcher] under registry.
2. Set the value to either 0-Disable.

Speed up menu display delay...
1. NAVIGATE to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] under registry.
2. Select MenuShowDelay from the list on the right.
3. Right on it and select Modify.
4. Change the value to something lower (a setting of zero (0) is virtually instantaneous - experiment with other settings (150 or 300 perhaps) to see what you are most comfortable with.

Shutdown faster...
1. Navigate to the following [HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop] Registry key.
2. Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1.
3. Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry (or create it as new D-Word if doesn't exisit) in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000.
4. Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry (or create it as new D-Word if doesn't exisit) in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000.

a 128MB PC shouldn't be running XP at all. Either get more memory, or use an older OS. Even Windows 98SE is sluggish with 144MB.

And ignore the above post, The only thing it conveys is a rather pure form of cargo-cult information regurgitation.Ignore the above post

The minimum recommended requirements for the original version of WinXP Pro is 128MB and is said to be able to manage on 64MB, however more memory would of cause be highly recommended.

Microsoft wouldn't lie, would they? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314865
Er ok, yeah they would (with their small print, actual requirements vary)...
This will be sluggish without performance tweaking.

You can run (third party) WinXP Lite or Gamer's Edition OS happily on 64MB or 128MB with good performance. All that WinXP Lite is, is a stripped down version. Rather than purchasing something like WinXP Lite (http://www.litepc.com/xplite.html), I just gave a few options to tweak with what your've got on XP Pro.

This would depend on what your planning to use those computers for, latest games or graphical applications would still need much more system resources (1GB min recommended for games). However, if your just word processing and doing simple applications, etc, I don't see any harm.

The Minimum requirements were also conceived when XP was released. that was 9 years ago. Programs are a lot heavier then they used to be.

No. If they want a faster computer they should get more RAM. Actually you know what, what the *censored*, I'll go through each of your points.

Quote
Reduce resolution
This will only matter if the computer was manufacturered/released around about 1992, before 2-D graphics accelerators became standard. Otherwise, it just makes things look crappy for no reason. Resolution is entirely dependent on the graphics card. So is colour depth. Actually, running at 16-bit colour will reduce performance, not increase it.

Quote
Reducing effects for performance
Again, Almost all of those are Graphics card-dependent. And- again- unless that graphics card is ancient it's GOING to support the basic 2-D device caps required for those effects. (A ATI Rage Pro 3D for example doesn't have the proper Alpha-blending caps to make the "fancy" selection box work as smooth, so windows uses the processor for it, but otherwise if the graphics card is doing the work you aren't going to be speeding it up by any large margin. This is particularly the case with XP which doesn't  take advantage of hardware acceleration beyond a few basic 2-D functions, so the GPU is usually sitting there doing squat half the time.
Quote
Remove indexing service (for quick search)
This be true. Mostly because the indexing service is almost never used (unlike Vista and 7 which have it on the start menu); and most people search using that find files applet which works with it but only finds half of what you're looking for.

SP3 is not faster then SP2. Nonetheless they should have it, though.

Personally I think disk defragmenter is a waste of time. And I ran XP in a K6-2 350Mhz and 96MB of RAM so I do indeed speak from experience that it speeds up nothing. Nor do any of the reported "speed tweaks".

Re the "Service" tweaks.

people who think that disabling as many services as possible speeds up the machine are plain and simple idiots. Of course disabling some services may increase performance, but that's because that service is no longer providing it's function. if the service wouldn't have been doing anything to BEGIN with, it won't even be loaded. Sure, it will show started, it's DLLMain will execute and it's Service Startup callback will be invoked, but unless the service actually needs to perform it's service it will almost always be swapped out to disk, not consuming memory nor CPU power. The fact  that people seem to believe otherwise is because they misunderstand the basic premise of what a "background" task is.

prefetch doesn't use Memory on windows XP. Mostly because it's a boot only process as well as during logon. Application prefetch data is stored in a centralized location that I'm sure you're aware of because you no doubt buy the "tip" that you should clear it out to speed up the machine.

All those settings are there for a good reason. They'll only speed up shutdown if for some reason a program hangs, or if a program was left open. Thankfully your little tweak there solves both problems and ends the second task automatically after two seconds. Even though it did in fact see the System shutdown and was prompting "do you want to save". Goodbye data.  Quote

Given you were able to install a win xp on your current hardware specs., a RAM upgrade  is the best approach. Although its quite unclear what you mean about Quote

The OP might have 2,3 or 4 of those. Without much information, its quite confusing.
