Please start a new post with your question and give a few more details e.g. what probs you have, what OS cd's you have available. Maybe they can be fixed without you spending any of your hard earned LOLLY Quote

Solve : A question about “cookies”?

Answer»

My FRIEND made me a start up disk.  So that when ever I have to reformat my COMPUTER all I have to do is PUT in the disk and reboot the computer, it does everything for me.  It even loads all of my main programs that I use.  But when he made the disk he turned of the “cookies” option.  My question is how do I turn the “cookies” back on?  I’m using Windows 98 Second Edition.
Assuming you are using Internet Explorer, I want you to open it, and click on Tools -> Internet Options... Click on the Privacy Tab... Now just adjust that slider to whatever security level you would like... Does this help?

Solve : ActiveX/Java?

Answer»

My daughter tried to enroll in some college courses online. Her APPLICATION was rejected because of Java settings on our computer.
I've verified  that Java v.1.1.4 is installed on the computer. I tried to install v.1.1.5.0_o4 but the installation bogged down approximately half way through. There were no follow up details indicating the problem.I am assming that I have some corrupt/missing activex/java files.
Can someone suggest a remedy for my problem? Thank you.Do you require ActiveX for the website? If you do not, look into Mozilla Firefox. Which is a much better alternative for searching the web than Internet Explorer.

There are ActiveX plug-ins available for Firefox, though.

As for your problem: Have you tried the following?

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. Security tab
6. Reset all security zones to Default

Solve : Problems w/ installing various programs.?

When trying to install certain programs/games such as C++, MSDN library, or even the original Half-Life(oddly HL2 installed WITHOUT any problems),I keep GETTING the same error MESSAGE. The error reads as follwed: config.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. CHOOSE 'Close" to terminate the application.
I tried going into the properties for the programs and changing the compatabilty, but it did nothing. Any suggestionse?Copy all the files to a temp directory and RUN the setup in compatability mode.http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/16-bit-MS-DOS-Subsystem-Error-Quick-Fix.shtmlTo fix run the following from the command prompt:

copy c:\windows\repair\config.nt c:\windows\system32

After you copy the file, find it in Windows Explorer, click properties and lock it down by giving it a read-only attribute.

This also works for autoexec.nt

Solve : Issues with Windows Genuine Advantage?

Answer»

Recently M/S has started to use a small active x app to CHECK to see if your USING Genuine M/S software .......
We have all seen it when we go to the Windows update page or go to D/L ANTISPYWARE BETA ......... In any event ........in the last few days perhaps a week .....the check has been adjusted to pickup OEM versions of  Windows XP ......... and you will get the result of the scan reporting .....VALIDATION FAILURE ......... Invalid product Key ....    I spent 3 hours on the phone yesterday finding out what is going on ........... the result is that M/S is aware of the PROBLEM and are working on it and expect to have it corrected by the end of the week.
This will only happen with OEM versions of XP ...or so I was told ......   the good news is there is a work around for it ........

dl65  Thanks for the tip DL!

I am using XP pro and had to validate earlier this week to get the updates. It let me have them but I was given a warning that said something like "the product key used is ASSOCIATED with a major manufacturer and the hardware found in your system does not match the expected configuration. This will not cause you any problems right now but may in the future" or something along those lines.
I have upgraded the computer so I'm not suprised the  hardware config is not what they wanted to see. My question is this, does making a hardware change invalidate the license agreement on an oem version?gliss......If I understand the way it works is ...it looks at your systems hardware and if it see major changes ...you may get that response ....... When Win XP pro was first activated ...for example the system may have had say one HD and a cd ROM ........ but since then you have added hardware ...say another hard drive and say a burner ....... But the big issue might be if you have changed the MOBO .......now it lools like a totally differant machine and probably has a new machine name ......... If that was the case , you would probably have to contact Microsoft and explain that you had changed the mobo .....Remember that the license allows you install on one machine.......
As it was explained to me by Microsoft this current issue only applies to Xp Home OEM .....but it may well be that it applies to Pro as well .

Hope this answers your question ........but if you have the time ,why not go to the horses mouth .......Microsoft and ask them the same question .

dl65  Much thanks DL 65! Actually when I changed the ethernet card it made me reactivate. I had to call microsoft and explain that I had made a hardware change and they where very nice and cooperative about it. So I just didn't see why they now indicate that this could be a problem in the future. If I get the time I'll give them a call.

Solve : I have Question?

Answer»

since windows has released that thing, WGA, i haven't been able to update to Service Pack 2, which i should have done a long TIME ago but now i regret it. seems as though a pirated copy of XP was installed on my computer when i bought it. If i was to buy the Genuine one and installed it, what if i need to reformat my computer again, will that Genuine XP disk still allow me to get the updates that i need? will Microsoft detect my version of windows to be genuine after i reformat? so asking the same question, does it allow me to install Windows more than once on a single computer but also seeing it as genuine?Shouldn't be a problem. A new XP CD will have SP2 already on it, or if not, you can slipstream SP2 and burn a new CD before installing.

To save a lot of trouble when formatting it is better to make a DRIVE image so that you can restore easily.

I use TeraByte Unlimited's Image for Windows and Image for DOS to make and restore drive images which saves me a lot of work doing re-installs. Quote

Yes to both questions:

Reformatting will erase any vestiges of the previous operating system, so you will not have a problem as long as the XP CD you use to install the OS is a legal one.

The Microsoft registration WEBSITE checks to see that the hardware is mostly the same each time you REGISTER the OS.  As long as you have not made too great a change in the hardware (such as changing the motherboard) you should have no problem registering the OS if you need to reinstall.

If you reinstall without reformatting after 30 days, you will be required to register immediately (you will not receive another 30-day grace period).

Should you want to report the source of the pirated copy, contact Microsoft. They have a program in which they will give you absolutely free a copy of XP home for reporting the source of the piracy.Crunk.....  There is another issue GOING on now with Microsoft .........called Windows Genuine Advantage .......
Now when you go to the Update page ........your system will be scanned to see if there are any updates available ...if there are ....you will asked to allow a check to see if you have genuine software running ......... However there is a glitch in something .........because now if it sees OEM software ...even if it is completely legal .........It will display VALIDATION FAILURE.......Invalid Product Key .......the result is not being able to D/l updates ........  ( I know because I spent 3 hours on the phone yesterday getting to the bottom of it .) I have been assured that microsoft are aware of the issue and according to Emails I have received from them ......they hope to have it corrected this week. There is a work around .

Solve : XP and lost file associations?

Answer»

All - need a bit of advice to hopefully solve an ongoing problem...

XP Pro (Dell D600 512MB ram & D610 1GB ram) both running SP2 - so here goes

Both laptops have been venturing around the world (on separate occasions) and ended up with losing nearly all of their file associations the only way i.e. cant OPEN some executibles - I can easily recover from this issue by restoring the OS using a hidden image (Acronis) - now the 1st time this happened we weren't using Acronis (which eliminates that) and the second time we were, so he we have 2 laptops totaly independant from each other but end up with the same problem - both are running Sophos (which is updated hourly when online) and both are also running Ad-Aware SE.

As the user has full admin rights the only thing I can think of is he/she is looking at SITES which you shouldnt and ALONG COMES some spyware - as I am now at a total loss any ideas would be welcome to help me investigate the issue further - thanksTry #12 on this page.

Solve : XP- Networking...?

Answer»

Ok so right now on my network, theres 2 wired computer to the wireless rounter and 1 laptop accessing wirelessly.

When I got my computers, I simply plugged everything in and my network was "set", I didn't even set anything and everything was perfect.

In school, I was learning about how to set up network and crap using 98 where everything had to be set so...

The network's name and folder and STUFF right now has like weird numbers and letters and the only thing it's sharing is the internet connection. How do I set it so we can share printers etc.?

What else should I set? How does one set it so one PC can access another? Also, the "Shared Doc" folder is stored where?

And LAST, the Wireless Router right now isn't set or anything (don't know if it need setting) so I'm pretty sure anyone can access it nearby. How to you set it so only so and so can access it and whatnot?

Also...

I go to VIEW workgroup computers and there was 3 units, one being mines. I rename my computer and now the new name AND the old is there, how can I get rid of it?http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htmCould I get both questions answered?

Also...

Theres 3 computers on my network, one computer is downloading crap and its slowing the other 2 significantly, is it possible to stop the slowdown or reduce it? (Online gaming and online surfing slows.)The following article should shed light on networking:

How Home Networking WorksGiga:

I find that troubleshooting works best when taking it one problem at a time and taking each problem one step at a time.

Please consider choosing one problem and explaining it in some detail.  Once our suggestions solve that problem, let us know.  Then we may tackle the next one.

Has your problem with file and printer sharing been SOLVED, yet? or is there another problem you want to solve first?

Solve : Cannot open safe mode?

Answer»

I had an issue today where one of my kids shoved a flash card into the computers card reader and it went up into the drive.  I had to remove the entire drive to remove it.  After replacing everything I was unable to BOOT up the computer correctly.  I can do an f8 but it won't open into any form of safe mode.  Also, with f11 I can get to reformating options but nothing will open and I lose control of the mouse and the keyboard.  I have no choice but to hard reboot.

If I do nothing I just get a continous loop through the start up process and back to safe mode options.

Did I fry something?  The computer is a Gateway 7200 series P4 running windows xp.Was the flash card shoven in when the computer was turned on?

When removing the drive, you may have accidently disconnected certain cables. I suggest that you recheck the wiring.

If all wiring is properly INSERTED, you should remove the card reader bay and SEE if booting without it does work. I actually suggest that you do so immediatly if you suspect that it is damaged.By default when WINXP encounters a system failure, it reboots without warning. The setting that controls this can be changed:

Control Panel/System/Advanced/Settings (Startup & Recovery)/System Failure/Uncheck-Automatically Restart

Try the  BIOS setup and chose the setup defaults option!

Solve : My Monitor blinking can anyone help me?

Answer»

Hello,
I am running windows xp on a AMD Athlon XP, 2000 MHz, 448MB RAM,  NVIDIA GeForce4 MX Integrated GPU video card.

My problem is that while I am browsing on my computer the monitor will start to blink every few seconds. I have
tried everything I can think of to fix it like updating all
of my drivers, etc. But it still happens again and again. If anyone has any ideas as to why this may be happening or possibly how to fix it. I would very much appreciate it.

Also, after the monitor blinks sometimes
parts of the screen will COME back garbled. If I move the
garbled window around it fixes it.Best to fit a separate video card and then you can liberate the 64 MB of RAM which is now being used by your on-board video.

The entire computer should function better. At the same time you can re-seat the RAM module(s) and possibly fit another.

Is your RAM 2 x 256 MB modules or is it 1 x 512 MB module, and how many RAM slots do you have?

RAM Knowledge Base
RAM And What it Does

The events you describe can also be caused due to having two videocards installed. One onboard and one expansion card.Type dxdiag in the run box.......what is the PSU!yes I also have the same problem, but i know for a fact it is not anything with the computer itself.

i had a new video card installed and the computer would work great for my cousin. then i got it and plugged it back in to my house, and it still has the same problem.

now it's just the monitor that is really the problem, is there anyway to help repair it? it's a Envision LCD monitor over 4 years old. EVEN if i try to change the brightness or the contrast, the screen blinks off and doesn't change. Quote

i had a new video card installed and the computer would work great for my cousin. then i got it and plugged it back in to my house, and it still has the same problem.

Your cousin had no problem, and you have the same problem?Just a shot in the dark.  Are you POSITIVE that all of your drivers updated?

If it is 4 years old, it either needs a new driver, or it is taking a massive DUMP in your face... well, i suppose we could use some logic...

The computer works when with another monitor.

the computer DOESN'T work when use on my monitor...

i dunno, i just cant say it's the drivers fault...Look for loose wiring, soldering and loose or broken pins in the plug in the cable from the computer to the monitor. Otherwise it may be an internal fault in the monitor itself. You could always try the XP diagnostic tools if you do the full install of the Support tools.

You find them in the SUPPORT TOOLS Folder ON the XP CD and all you need to do is to click on the setup.exe to start the install.

Solve : windows xp installed 2x on my computer?

Answer»

i somehow INSTALLED windows xp professional twice on my computer.  when i boot up the computer goes to a dos screen where i can toggle between the 2 operating systems to pick which one i want to use.

now my anti-virus software scans almost 2x as many files & my computer is considerably slower.  is there a way i can uninstall or delete one of the os?  please let me know.

thanksAre these operating systems installed on different partitions and/or Hard Disk Drives?Surprisingly, this problem is not that rare. And there are as many theories on the best course of action as there are people who PROVIDE these theories. Your safest bet is probably to reformat the HDD and install a fresh copy of XP, to avoid any conflicts.i'm not sure about partitions but i only have 1 hard drive.

if i have to reformat the hdd, how do i go about doing that? Quote

Before reformating, you may first wish to determine if the OS are installed on different partitions.

Do you have more than one station? (E.G: C:\, D:\)  Not counting CD/DVD-ROM, FDD or any other REMOVEABLE media station!just c:Then there may be no other alternative than to reformat.

However, if Windows XP is installed in a different folder than C:\Windows, you could simply try to remove the additional folder and see if that solves your problem. Be warned: The operating system can become very unstable!

I will write down the steps you need to take in order to reformat and reinstall Windows XP

1. Enter the BIOS
2. Set the first boot device to CD-ROM
3. Insert Windows XP CD-ROM
4. Press a key to enter setup when prompted
5. Choose to install Windows XP

It will now prompt you that Windows XP is allready installed

6. Choose to continue
7. You will not be given a menu where you can create and remove partitions. Follow onscreen instructions if you wish to create additional partitions.

The partition where you will install Windows XP will be formatted by the installation, any other partitions will have to be reformatted in Windows XP once it is installed.

1. See this for more information
2. This means that the first device the computer will read is your CD-ROM player. So that you can boot from the CD-ROM instead of the Hard Disk Drive. For more information on this subject, see this article.I sort of have the same issue.  (I finally decided to register after getting good help here.  Thanks!)

I have managed to install two copies of Windows XP, one on each hard drive, C: and D:, so I can GET rid of the one on C:.  However, whenever I am prompted to choose which OS to start up and I choose the D: one, the computer just automatically resets itself over.  When I choose the C: one, it works perfectly fine.

How can I fix the computer so that I can start the Windows XP on D: drive, and delete the one on C:?  I do not know if it possible to empty the C drive and use another partition to boot from.

However, you may wish to look into editing the boot.ini file.

More information can be found hereI highly doubt it, but will attempting to change up which hard drive is master and which one is slave available?

Sorry to hear about your husband.

Raptor, thank you for your sympathies.  This has all been a lesson in frustration.
When I put the CD in and tell it to RUN drive D I get a screen that has two icons labled Autorun and udfrinst. Then a box appears that says "A disc has been inserted that requires the Adaptec UDF Reader.  This setup wizard installs the Adaptec UDF Reader for Windows95/WindowsNT. Do you wish to coninue? Yes/No?"     What?
I KNOW that there are pictures on these CD's and I know I'm smart enough to learn how to do this.  I just need a little help. Heck, it took me 6 months to figure out how to get the pictures out of the digital camera.
SQUIRREL, I don't understand about the CD-ROM question. I am unfamiliar with the jargon. Thank you all for your responses.Try to do the following:

1. Insert the CD-ROM
2. Double click on My Computer (Or whatever other method you prefer)
3. From My Computer, right click on the CD-ROM drive icon
4. Select explore

A different folder should now open which will show you the content of the CD-ROM. Can you tell us what kind of files there are present?

Basically what it wants to do is install a certain tool that allows Windows to read your CD-ROM. You should try to access it with the method described above first, though.

Can you also tell us what version of Windows you are using? I am running Windows XP.  The CD's I am trying to read were created on Windows 98.  When I try to read them I get a message that says I need to install Adaptec UDF Reader.  When I attempt to do that I get an error message with a numerical code, which does me absolutely no good because there is no source for finding out what the error code means.  My friend tells me that it is a formatting incompatability issue.  SO??? How do I fix it?  No one seems to know.  Thank you all for your help.  Does this INFORMATION enable you to make any other suggestions? ;DHey guys! Just thought I would let you know that I really, really am a moron.  Adaptec would not install because my firewall was on.  DUH!  Anyway, I'm looking at pictures and am a happy camper once again.  Thanks so much for all you help.Good news Kay, had to be something with the Adaptec UDF Reader installation.

Must be good to see the photographs again.

Sorry to hear of your loss.FYI Btw, this is what happened when I tried to install Adaptec UDF Reader.

This is XP SP2 Professional US English version with the Multilingual User Interface.Good to hear you resolved the problem. Come back if you need more help! The user is unsure.......maybe if they typed ver in the cmd prompt it would explain more|"My friend tells me that it is a formatting incompatability issue."

Which may well have something to do with the different media descriptor put on the CD, or so they SAY.

Solve : Found a program called 'Overland'?

Answer»

Quite by accident I found a program sitting on my computer - it's called 'Overland' and when I clicked for 'properties', it showed being downloaded last January.

I SEARCHED through my hand-written 'log' I keep of all downloads and found no record at all of this ... then went to the Add/Delete section of my computer and couldn't find it listed there under Programs either.

(The only thing I downloaded in January was the update for my new HP All-in-One ... and they say it's not one of theirs).

Any ideas, please?

Thanks so much,  MaraIt could be Malware of some kind. Update your scanners and scan your HDI've got my scanners up to date (in fact, I ensure they update each morning and evening - grin).

Since you FEEL it could be Malware, think I'll just delete it  - and then run Belarc to ensure no other 'odd' things have hidden themselves away lately.

I found it interesting that ALTHOUGH HP swears it's not part of their 'package', it downloaded on exactly the same date - and HP was literally all I downloaded that day).

So GLAD you feel it's simply Malware - really appreciate your help!

With kind thoughts,
MaraIt could be a legitimate program as well.

What kind of files are associated with it and what scanners are you using?

Greetings FLBob,

First unplug the Zip Drive and leave it out until later.
Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove programs and and uninstall Iomega program.
Then:
Go to Control Panel>System>Hardware Tab>Device Manager>Click+ 'Open Disk DRIVES' Highlight Iomega 100 Zip>Action>Uninstall>ReBoot.
note: if you don't find the Zip 100 in device manager don't worry.

Had one of these, and as I remember the Installation was as follows:
Leave Zip Drive unplugged from system for now.

USING CD or download file and install the software which includes the drivers you got from Iomega and Shutdown Computer.

Now plug in the Zip drive to which ever port you are using and Start Computer. Windows will find the drivers for the hardware.

If the above does not work for you make sure you have the right drivers. You need drivers for Iomega Zip 100 Parallel Port. Also make sure you get them for the right OS ie. WIN XP or Win98SE etc. The drivers are here and also Install manual.

Solve : System twitches?

Answer»

Following a power failure, my computer has been 'twitching', or pausing briefly about every 1-2 seconds. I see it as a brief pausing in the mouse as I move it around, and I also hear a corresponding twitch in the audio if I play music. These are simultaneous and continuous, from boot up onwards. System restore hasn't helped. It's LIKE Chinese water torture! Has anyone got any ideas about what's wrong and how to fix it?What OS? Computer manufacturer(i.e. Dell)? Model (i.e. GX1)? Has your Computer recently gotten wet?  Have you scanned the disk for errors?Try running chkdsk and see if that fixes things.

I had this happen and had to delete a couple of files but all the others are OK and so is the player.First, just for this test, stop all ongoing 'things' you have running for a moment, like playing music or applications you can close just for a bit.

When you bring up the Task Manager (ctrl-alt-delete) after that and look at the Processes tab, is the largest percentage of your CPU usage (CPU column) for the System Idle Process? If it's not, you may have some program or service running in the background that is eating up your CPU. This can be something you MEAN to have running (an early version of Google Notifier did this on my system until I updated it) or it could be malware that has somehow made its way ONTO your system and is now running in the background on your machine.

If the System Idle Process is taking up most of your CPU usage though, this probably isn't the case.My system is XP, no name computer. It hasn't got wet, and the problem happened after a power loss anyway. Scan disk didn't show anything. The task manager is showing 50 processes, but the System Idle Process CPU usage VARIES between 60 and 98%. The only other thing running is mpservic.exe (not sure what that does), which makes up the remainder of the 100%. Does that GIVE any more clues?I just checked my computer task manager, I'm running 20 processes but that includes 7 antivirus/spyware/firewall related things.
My System Idle Process sits on 98/99.

If you think it relates to the power outage you may have got a spike. Run a test on your ram and from a good housekeeping point of view look at your 50 processes and see if you need them all.
You may well finish up better than when the problem started.Run a trojan scan! check firewall logs! check the events log//control panel/admin tools........run trend online scan...

Solve : JPG not previewing/showing in apps.?

Answer»

I am sure this is my fault, but now how do I fix it?

A while ago (1.5 years or so?) I was trying to disassociate GIF files with my primary image VIEWER because it wouldn't allow them to play their animations.  It would just be the first frame with no animation.  So, I went into the FILE manager and associated them with something else (forget what now), but in the process, I had to manually put in each image file that I wanted associated with the primary image program since it listed all of the image file types as simply "Image File".

After doing all of that, my images started getting screwy,  JPG's no longer PREVIEW in the Windows Explorer even though I have the box checked for them to show previews.  Many programs of mine also don't show image files if they use them.  Such as these two lovely examples:

SOLITAIRE Master 3 not displaying images.

Verizon Online Support CENTER not displaying some images.

Solve : Help! - Recovery Tool For Outlook??

Answer»

Greetings,

I only just found this forum and it looks excellent.

Does anyone know of a reliable recovery tool for Outlook?  The pc runs Millenium and Windows will have to be restored after a total crash (no backup).  I have seen a few recovery tools advertised but I was hoping someone could recommend which one is best.

Also, does anyone know of a free Outlook recovery tool?  I have not seen any mention of a free download.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions.Nice website you have to! What is the problem with outlook!Hi Merlin,

Not sure if I can explain the problem fully because I am not a technical person and I don't use Millennium or Outlook myself but I'll try.  I am trying to help my daughter (it's her pc that crashed).

The problem, as far as I can make out from stuff I have read, was caused because my daughter used system restore instead of uninstall to get rid of some software that she had downloaded.  One day things went wrong and the system restore had disappeared.  It is only possible to start up in safe mode and we can't access Outlook from there because clicking on "start" doesn't work.

The PC helpline said the only thing to do was to reinstall everything from the original disc which would mean losing everything on the computer.  I managed to find a way to copy important document files onto floppy discs using dos commands, so that is ok.

What we want to do now is find a way to salvage the email contacts address book and saved emails which are in Outlook.  I have found sites that advertise backup software for Outlook but we're way past that stage.  I was hoping someone might know of a recovery tool for Outlook (preferably free).  I have been SEARCHING for days but, if such a tool does exist, I haven't managed to track it down.

Hope this makes sense.

huntingv....... Pardon the pun , but Merlin _2 is the wizzard when it come to Win ME .

Just a tip .......always use the ADD/Remove programs feature in the control panel to remove unwanted programs ........

You say that your system restore is totally non functional ?

dl65  Hi dl65,

It is totally non-functional, like it never existed in the first place.  I read somewhere that this happens with Millennium if you use system restore instead of UNINSTALLING  programmes.  The article I read also said this situation is incurable!

a backup tools or software may not work correctly as the files may have been overwritten during the system restore

This site has a smart giude to find the files:-

http://www.flexisoft.com/support/faq/faq05-email.htm
follow the notes on there
can you do a search for File types:-
.pst  .pab  .wab
NOTE their file pathways

copy to floppies, another drive or partition. then after the reinstallation copy them back into the same file path, outlook should then pick up from where it left of.
 Hi uisquebeathus,

We can't get a start menu, so we can't use the flexisoft  instructions.  Also, I don't understand partitions and pathways (I am not at all technical) and this is one reason for looking for a recovery tool.

Thanks for trying anyway.

Ok these are the options for you! has the pc any other problems beside outlook!type this in the msdos command prompt C:\>WINDOWS scanreg/fix.........this command will rebuild the REGESTRY......ok.....or if you wish to take it back> you first switched it on......then loacate this folderC:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS   when you have found itnow scroll down the PAGE .....you will see and called scanreg......next to it is  one called....SETUP......if you where to click this icon it will take your pc back to day you first fired it up......hang on this the good part....no file loss??Your choice is yours..... Hi Merlin,

I tried scanreg/fix and got the following message:

"repairing C:WINDOWS\USER.DAT

There is not enough free conventional memory.

You may need to remark (REM) some device drivers from your CONFIG.SYS file.  Or, in your CONFIG.SYS, you may need to load the EMM386.EXE driver to load your other device drivers into Upper Memory Block using DEVICE HIGH = statements."

I'm afraid I have no idea what any of it means.Restart pc hold down the f8 key.......and chose the option.....start windows by step by confirmation.......answer yes to all..........Hi Merlin,

Thanks for your help so far.

I got as far as setting up Windows ME, then this error came up:

Generic Installer Error
Message SU99407
Add Reg = Processing error.
[0x197]

The only option was to click OK, which stopped everything and brought up a black screen.

Any hope?

Thanks.
These commands may sort it  setup /c   or scandisk.exe /all from the msdos prompt........is this an UPGRADE from win95/98.........is this a clean install???if so  use the format c:  then the fdisk command.....or if you have the recovery disks......use them!

Solve : BIOS question??

Answer»

turn off shadowing and caching in the BIOS???

why is it doing this, in the FIRST place??COMPLETE sentences would be helpful, as it will help us FIGURE out exactly what the computer is doing. What exactly is your issue? The caching you are refering to is most likely the CPU cache. You do not want to disable this.

Solve : The Merlin Character?

Answer»

Announcing the Merlin character. Merlin is ALREADY installed on XP systems. Check him out at  Merlin. Don't have XP? Fear not. Check out the Microsoft Agent for how to get Merlin and all his friends. Best of all, Merlin is free.

Now you can tell Merlin what to SAY and when to say it. Have him fly about your screen or otherwise order him about. Have Merlin announce your presence when you log in. Remember you are in control and Merlin is your puppet.

Actually Merlin is in control and YOU are the puppet.Me thinks this IMPOSTER is M_2's alterego!

1. Scan for Viruses, Trojan horses and spyware

2. What program is causing this?

3. Could be due to user-abuse.

4. See 3.

5. See 3.

First use the following programs to remove all security threats.

Then continue to clean up the Hard Disk Drive by means of defragmentation, registry cleaning and other such tasks.

Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Trend Micro Housecall
-- Online anti virus scanner.

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
Adaware SE Personal
-- Anti spyware scanner

Firewalls
Using only one firewall is advised. Dual firewalls MAY cause problems.
Using a hardware firewall and a software firewall is even more adviced.

ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

Removal tools
The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either diagnostic tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

HijackThis
-- Manual malware remover. Post the HijackThis log generated only if requested!
McAfee Stinger
-- Virus removal tool. No substitute for a fully functional virus scanner!
CWshredder
-- CoolWebSearch removal tool. Widely known and persistant Hijacker.

Easy Cleaners
-- Freeware registry scanner
Registrar Lite
-- Excellent replacement for Windows Regedit
Crap Cleaner
-- Freeware registry scanner/history cleaner

Caution is advised when using these programs!
Create backups of all important files before proceeding.

Back up all the important data first.

See if the following article is of use:

My computer is running slow what steps can I do to fix it?The computer specs are!.......is does have  a bearing on load times etc!More RAM often helps slow boot times. I have seen boot times drop by half simply by doubling the amount of installed RAM.Well i dont know about RAM mac.

I upgraded myself to 1024 megs a month back and it went really fast but not its really slow sutting down. I dont think this is due to viruses but its more to the fact i have more games on my pc now and my HDD is getting one *censored* of a work out each day.

But like raptor says i think you have a prob with a Trojan or a worm. Get one of the scanners and Pop it full of it. ROSS

Try using the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service from MS.

"Run Disk Cleanup and remove all but the last restore point. See if your System Restore cache and Recycle Bin size is set at a reasonable level (Say 1024Mb) on each drive, and reduce the IE Temporary Internet Files cache and History cache to the minimum. Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the JUNK files. Unhide all files and folders and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and remove their entries from Add-Remove programs. Then remove the CONTENTS of:

The C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder
The C: WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder
The C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder
The C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\Datacoll folder, and...
The C:\Windows\Prefetch folder

(You can add these folders to EmpTemp if you have this program installed.) Then run chkdsk and defrag."

EmpTemp & CCLeaner File Cleaner

To make your shutdown work cleanly install the... User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

TRY enabling the Japanese language in the menu hidden underneath the drop down menu on your screenshot.

You should put a check mark in both.

Solve : I really messed up?

Answer»

I really messed my computer up.. I accidently disabled the start up file, I'm not sure of the technical name.  When I start my computer, it says to click on user, there is no user.  How do I go in and enable the program?
I know what I did was dumb, I should have read more carefully, I was trying to disable the password, not the prigram.you deleted your LOG on?What version of Windows (95, 98, ME, 2k, XP)?not deleted, disabled.  I went into security and disabled it, than restarted my computer.windows xp.  we tried reinstalling windows, didn't work.At log on screen, try Ctrl-Alt-Del, 2 times.  That should let you log on as Administrator.  Then create a new account and log off.  Then log on as new user.when i do that it asks for a password, when i ENTER that it says to make sure that my domain and user name is correct.  user name is administrator.  I have the right password, that is what got me into trouble in the first place.User names and passwords are case sensitive.I know that, but the password I know is correct, but I am not sure about the domain.Domain is "Workgroup"Okay, now it says my account has been disabled, please see your SYSTEM admin  Are you saying:  both User and administrator accounts (profiles), have been disabled?the domain was administrator, i typed the password incorectly the first time, now its giving me the message i wrote above. the admin was the only one availabe the guest one has been disabled.  im not sure about  a user,  if i have one there was NEVER a password set.its asking for a user name and password.  it automaticaly is showing admin, i put in the password, than it shows the message.  we DONT have passwords for anything else, that i know of.  this really stinks, i was just trying to put a password on a personal file, n ot the whole computer.

Solve : Internet Explorer and OE Constantly Closing out?

Answer»

Hello.  I hope someone can help.  Awhile AGO, I accidently downloaded windows auto updates of SP2 which I did not want to do.  My problems with Internet Exp. and Outlook Express (Windows XP Home Edition) started then with error reports but it is getting MUCH WORSE AND MORE FREQUENT. I have resisted downloading any more SP2 auto updates since.  I do virus and spy checks daily--no problems there.  No new software recently installed.

Do I need to be downloading all these persistant SP2 auto updates now?  Will that solve this problem?  Thanks sooo much for any help!! Quote

SERVICE Pack 2 does more GOOD than bad.

If your system is allready UNSTABLE, you may as well see what happens when you download the updates. Chances are it is going to be FIXED. Chances are your computer may not boot again.

We need more information before we can generate a solution for you.
