Solve : Missing system file? |
|
Answer» My computer is called HCL made in India. I recently purchased a flash drive(PNY 128MB). As per their instructions I have downloaded the driver(called T20.zip) from their website but am unable to install it. I extracted the zipped file using Winzip9.0. The four extracted file types are .exe, .inf, .pdr & .sy . Of these, the .pdr & .sy have the Windows Welcome icon. I think this means that my system is unable to recognize them. Clicking the setup.exe file gives me a message that says "Main .in_ file with[Setup]section not found!" Some months ago I uninstalled the Norton Anti-virus I had (I now have AVG ) . Later, while trying to get rid of unwanted files, I found some files that I thought were associated with Norton/Symantec and deleted them(I think from Program Files, but I am not sure.)Also removed them from the Recycle Bin. For some time now ,as my computer boots I get a screen that reads: "Cannot find a device file that may be required to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file. C:PROGRA~1\SYMANTEC\SYMEVNT.386 Press any key to continue....." I do not know if this has anything to do with my not being able to install the driver for my flash drive. PLEASE HELP.Reading your problem, I can deduct the following: 1. You can not install drivers for your Flash drive 2. You removed files of unknown (to you) origin that you thought were related to Norton Anti virus 3. You can still enter Windows Are the following statements correct? Answer these questions: 1. Which variant of Windows are you using? 2. Can you still access Windows? 3. Have you downloaded the correct drivers? 4. Has your Anti virus scanner ceased to work?Thank you. Your 3 deductions are correct. The answers to your questions are: 1)I'm using Windows 98SE. 2)Yes, I can access Windows 3) Yes I have downloaded the correct driver----I have double checked. 4) I am using AVG Anti virus(free) & it is working. The solution to having the error dissapear at startup may simply lie in doing the following: 1. Start 2. Run 3. Type regedit 4. Press Ok 5. Search for SYMEVNT.386 Remove all entries related to Norton. However, before doing so, first remove the C:\Program Files\Norton folder should it still be present on your computer. If it is still present, remove the folder and restart the computer. If the error is not gone, do as I suggested previously and edit the registry. The Flash drivers: 1. Create a new folder 2. Copy the compressed document into this folder 3. Right click on the compressed document that CONTAINS the drivers. 4. Select extract here 5. Run the installation file. These instructions may partially only apply to WinRAR. <---- Agrees with Raptor and suggests you backup the registry before deleting the keys. I edited the registry as you suggested . Did not find SYMEVNT.386 but found a Norton folder & deleted that. But the startup error message persists. This is not so important . My main problem is not being able to use my flash drive. Followed your instructions . On clicking setup.exe I got a "USB Flash Drive Driver Setup Utility" Message box (instead of the Installshield Wizard as indicated in the PNY website installation guide) . Selected 'Install or Update Driver' & 'Start'. After the line filled up with blue I got "Installation complete. Please replug your device". I inserted the flash drive in the USB port but there was no "Removable Disk" in 'My Computer'. 1) Should I check USB controller option in the BIOS settings to make sure it is enabled? How is this done?(I am already using one of the ports for a modem-----so is it already enabled?). I am nervous to mess with the BIOS settings , so DETAILED step by step instructions will be appreciated. 2) How do I find out where the driver software is located in my computer? That is , if & when it ever gets installed Quote
1. If you are allready using an USB port, and it is detected properly, then it has allready been enabled. 2. Not quite certain. I would say X:\Windows\System32. Did you properly search through the entire register? You can only search through the entire register by clicking on this computer and then use use search. If you click on one of the folders, it will only search there. Why am I unable to install the driver? Is it possible that some Windows file is missing? Isnt there ANYTHING I can do? I had a faint hope with the BIOS thing-------now that that's out what should I do-------fling the *censored* flash drive out the window?? I'm totally fed up This must be one of the few problems that has foxed even you! Thanks anyway..........From what you have told me, I would say that you are using incompatible drivers. However, if you are CONVINCED that you have downloaded the correct drivers, then the problem may lie somewhere else. At the moment, you experience two non-related difficulties, correct? 1. Norton error messages 2. Flash ( Reader? ) driver problem Have you solved the first issue by editing the registry MANUALLY? Have the drivers succesfully installed after you have done as I recommended? How many usb devices have you got.?..........you could unplug one them and plug your flash drive in....... Type msinfo32 in the run box.......click + components click +usb......this will tell you more......and you could click+ problem devices it should throw up a code....tell us what it reports....From msinfo32 Problem Devices I got the following: USB 2.0 FD Unknown This Device Has a Problem: Code=28 (0x1C) The drivers for this device are not installed correctly. To install the driver for this device, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver. Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\enum\USB\VID_154B&PID_0010\6E5107009F17 Alloc resources: None Forced resources: None Boot resources: None Filtered resources: None Basic resources: None Driver: Driver Not Installed However I cannot find the Driver tab.load the software first>> try again>http://www.pny.com/support/drivers/?prod=attache.. upon downloading it should read compressed folder which you have said ok>>> now click on the folder and then click the setup icon and reboot pc now attach the flash drive....I did all of this many times over ------no luck! But what about the code I got from Start>Run>msinfo32> +Components>Problem Devices? does it convey anything? I tried downloading & installing the driver for ANOTHER but similar device from the same site. It gets installed smoothly--- exactly as outlined in their installation guide. So what's the problem with this one? The flash drive should have come with drivers......maybe its faulty take it back to dixons/pcworld/currys/maplins or wherever you bought it....i have one of those and have no problems with it...?Try add hardware wizard to see if it helps...... I live in India & this device was bought in the US! Anyway the only way I can think of to find out what is wrong is for someone with Windows 98SE (unfortunately all my friends here have moved beyond this!) to download the driver from http://www.pny.com/support/drivers/?prod=attache (the first picture on the extreme left(USB 2.0, 128MB)-------the file that downloads will be called T20.zip) & install it temporarily. If it doesnt install , then we know where the problem is....... Thanks in advance to anyone who does this for me & lets me know! |
