Solve : Parser returned error?

Answer»

I get the following error:

error parsing c:\windows\system 32\ URTTemp\config\machine.config
parser returned error 0x80070003

What can I do to correct this problem?  I can't find any imformation on it.  This is a custom built PC running XP.  It is a P4 with 1GB ram.Can you retrace the steps you have taken to cause and encounter this error?I first encounterd this error when DOWNLOADING security updates from Microsoft.  I do not remember the specific update. What happened during these updates? Did you interrupt and cancel them?

Have you scanned for viruses, trojan horses and spyware?

Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy

Widely known and persistant Hijacker.Nothing out of the ordinary happened when downloading and installing updates.  I have Norton Anti Virus and Firewall 2005 installed.  I have a scan SCHEDULED 3 times a week.  The Xp firewall is disabled.  I also have Microsoft Antispyware installed and also use Adaware SE personal about once a week.  I have not turned up any problems in my recent virus scans and have not noticed anything unusual in the Adaware scans. The machine.config file on this computer appears to be in C:\windows\Microsoft.net\framework\v.x.x.xxx\config.

Do you have duplicate files?I don't have duplicate files on this.  I do remember that one of the security updates referenced Microsoft.net\framework when this problem first occured.Machine.config seems to be part of Microsoft NET framework.

If you are into experimentation, you could try to uninstall and reinstall NET Framework from add/remove software. Perhaps there is a repair option available as well.

Or you can simply remove/move the machine.config file.

Machine.config Shrinks

Something I just noticed in 2.0: my machine.config is around 17 KB in size, compared to over 200 KB in 1.1. The file seems practically empty. A little comment at the top of the file reveals why:

“To improve performance, machine.config should contain only those settings that differ from their defaults.”

I have never tried to do this myself, but I can not find much information on your problem or the machine.config file.

Take heed, removing or modifying these files may cause Windows XP to BECOME unstable or even unusable.Firewall settings.......Stamp:

Solve : Is it true??

Answer»

Is it true that disk defrag can slow down your computer?
This has been worrying me recently.
ThanksNo.

I defragment my game computer every time I start and everytime I shut down. I also defrag it every time I install or remove a program or  whenever I make a change that involves fragmention of the HDD.

I defrag my Internet computer nearly every day.

I even run a registry/page file defragger each time the computers boot up.

If you have seen the inside of a HDD, you know there there are several platters and one arm which reads these platters. If data is fragmented, the arm has to move further away from the center and has to do this more often. This results in additional stress on the reading arm.

I am not QUITE certain where it places data at the beginning of the disk or concentrates it near the center, either way, the less fragmented data, the more the reading arm can stay in the same area whilst reading

If you defragment the HDD, the data will remain in the center of the HDD and the reading arm has to travel less distance. This results in faster reading and search times.

If defragmenting slows down your system after the process is complete, your computer is most LIKELY due to a reformat and you are in for a quick course in maintaining computers.. The software is rarely to blame.

Thanks again.
Z.AndrewsYou could try this out if you wish>>http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.aspThe answer depends on the question, if you mean does regular defragmentation result in a slower computer then no that is incorrect, but if you mean does your computer slow while defragging, then this this is true becuase most of the resources are devoted to the defragmentation process.Clovell:

You can also re-set the size of the Master Files Tables, if it is necessary, to prevent excess fragmentation. Now that you have just done a re-install here are some TIPS for you...

"Run Disk Cleanup and remove all but the last restore point. See if your System Restore cache and Recycle Bin size is set at a reasonable level (Say 1024Mb) on each drive, and reduce the IE Temporary Internet Files cache and History cache to the minimum. Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files. Unhide all files and folders and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and remove their ENTRIES from Add-Remove programs. Then remove the contents of:

The C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder
The C: WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder
The C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder
The C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\Datacoll folder, and...
The C:\Windows\Prefetch folder

(You can add these folders to EmpTemp if you have this program installed.) Then run chkdsk and defrag."

How to do this?Diskeeper 9 Professional has an additional feature called Frag-Shield. It will assess the size of the MFTs and, if they are too small, recommend a better size.

When you agree to the assessment just click Proceed and Frag-Shield will set them to the new size. And how to if you do not use Disk Keeper?

Solve : Screen has turned sideways and wont undo...?

Answer»

So I was trying to load a cd and it wasn't loading, so I hit alt/ CTRL/ dlt to see if anything was wrong, and all of a sudden my screen turned black and fliped around 90 degrees.  I may have hit another button by accident, but I dunno what I could have hit to do that.  I have winbdows xp, no new settign have been applyed, what could it be?

and yes my head is tilted sideways typing this. lol.I'm new here, as of this morning, but I'm having similar troubles!! Only my screen turns sideways every time I wake it up from hibernation. Anyway, to turn it BACK to normal, just right click on your desk top and GO to properties. Under the settings tab, click Advanced, and see if there is a Rotation tab.

Hope that helps! Someone just SHARED that with me this morning. Hope you don't have continued troubles with your monitor like I'm having!hmm I dont see a rotation tab anywhere in there...Hmmm... maybe you have a DIFFERENT version than I do. You're looking at the Advanced under settings??

Anyway, being a newbe myself, I'm not much help, but have you tried shutting down the computer? That's the only other thing that worked for me.

If that doesn't work, someone else will have to help you. There are much better experts around here than me. Maybe they can help both of us!! yep, tried both those, but thanks anyways.  What videocard is installed and what drivers are you using?Quote from another forum...

"She had intel 845 graphics and there is a rotation setting in the software."

I hope anybody can help me with this? I'm just starting to build my interest in windows troubleshooting and im starting to like it..

Can you give a résumé of your system specifications please, as this can help us to help you better.

Is your system in English?Hi, here are some info about my system,

Unit: Toshiba Dynabook Satellite 2060
Processor: AMD K6, 266 MHz
RAM: 64 MB
HDD (Primary Partition): 28 GB

I am not sure if the system is in English, but If i remember it right (or If i understood your question correctly), I installed it in English language, however, i can see japanese characters in the keyboard (the owner of the system bought his unit in Japan).

I can't remember the other specs but i hope these 4 can already help.

Thanks!

You could certainly do with more RAM. Your Toshiba Satellite 2060 has a maximum RAM capacity of 160Mb but the largest module which is readily available from Crucial is 128 Mb and you can only FIT one as there is only one RAM slot available in the Toshiba.

I find that ME runs better on a 4096-8192 Mb partition so I would try shrinking the drive down to a reasonable size as you get smaller clusters.

I use TeraByte Unlimited's BootIT NG Partition Resizer.Which Anti-Virus & Firewall programs do you use, and what are you using to guard against Trojans?i'll try to look for the 160Mb. Thanks :-)

I would guess that you'll only find a 128 Mb module. Click on the TeraByte link below. It is not freeware but for US$ 60 for all four programs, BootIT NG boot manager and Partition Resizer, Image for Windows, and Image for DOS, it is very good value.

Solve : desperate - can't access Windows XP?

Answer»
I think I removed something from my system during a RECENT clean out. Here's what happens, after windows xp starts up - I get the page where you have to click on a user name or click on the icon to shut down the system.  When I click my user name (or anyone else's user name) it will say signing on and then seconds later it will say signing off.... so I am unable to access anything on my computer!!!!! When I went to safe mode operation -- the same problem occured. I'm in the middle of a huge project and I'm pretty desperate. Please help if you can --- thanks so much!!1. Before Windows XP loads, press F8
2. Select last known good configuration and press Enter. Are you the admin!!power user.My problem also exists in safe mode.  When I tried last known configuration the problem did not go away. I tried last known configuration several times and the problem continues. As soon as the user logs on - it logs off and states "saving settings". I can't access windows xp at all........ I WONDER if I deleted something from my system or if I have a virus that is disabling my computer COMPLETELY!!!!When you log on......are you using the correct password?....did you change the password.?....see if this does it .......sometimes it works sometimes it does not .....when you see the logging screen hold down the shift key+enter key......keep tapping them......or you will have to go back into safe mode and setup a new user account....mm. I've never set a password on the computer. Also - I'm not able to do ANYTHING in safemode - because if when I try to open the administrator user - the same thing happens - logging on, logging off (within one second) and then saving settings.
I have no idea how to set up a new user account in safe mode. Can you instruct? It WOULD have to be something I can do from the first MENU that appears after I press F8. Because once I get into safe mode with the screen with all my users -- I CAN DO NOTHING MORE.... I'm so frustrated. I appreciate your advice. thankshttp://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/106983.htmlthanks. I can't locate my windows xp cd - so i'm afraid I'm going to have to pay someone $200 dollars to restall and repair as you suggest from your attached website. thanks:-(It would be cheaper to buy a new copy of Windows XP..!

Solve : XP Hangs/Freezes Up?

Answer»

I've been trying to solve my problem for a while, but couldn't find the solution so I'm writing on this forum
First of all, XP, Pentium IV, 1GB memory, 120GB HD, 2.4 GHz, CD & DVD+R burner

Whenever I log off of windows, my system usually just hangs when it says "saving your settings" and then I have to restart the computer for it to work again, or it does log off and then everything on the welcome screen is froze up but the mouse pointer, so I eventually have to close things down by holding the power button in. And even a lot of times (like 70% of the time) when I power back up I get the same result where I get to the welcome screen and again the screen gets froze up, except for the mouse pointer, and I can't click on anything. Usually when I start the computer up, I press F8, and start up with "Last known good configuration", but it's getting annoying having to do this everytime just to log on my computer. Can anyone help? It started about 2 1/2 months ago after I was gone for a week on vacation. I did unplug the computer while I was gone. Would that have something to do with it? LET me know if someone can help remedy the situation. Thanks!
JIM
Have read jim ok>http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htmIf your anti-virus is up to date and you have run a full scan and taken proper anti-Trojan problems it could just be that it needs a good clean-up.

Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal ToolJim:

Two possible causes:

1. The message "Saving your settings" likely indicates that the battery that supplies power to your motherboard is going DEAD or has died.  The battery is used to keep the settings in the BIOS memory when the power is off.  The BIOS may be detecting your hardware as new devices every time you start your comupter because these settings are lost when it is turned off.  I'd suggest replacing the battery (they're usually under $5.00 and easy to replace as long as they are not soldered to the board).

2. Less likely as a cause is a bug in Windows XP.  There was a problem with Windows XP having slow shutdowns and startups that was fixed in the latest Service Pack (SP2) from Microsoft.  Do you have Service Pack 2 installed?

I'd start there, and with Mac's and M2's suggestions if i were you.

Let us know how it goes,
DocA flat battery or no battery for that matter will only cause the computer to boot with the bios defaults.

"saving your settings" refers to windows settings.

Start in safe mode then shut down (it will be slow) and if this proves successful then it is a program that is loading that's causing the problem.
Try it & let us know. What I did was take the windows XP log on welcome screen away, so just the old way of logging on, and it has seemed to be working so far, so good. If it ends up not working, I will take your suggestions and try them. Thanks a bunch everyone!
JIM Thanks for the feedback jim  and we are help .....Something else to try might be a non-destructive system recovery (this is an option you have when you boot from your XP DISK). Some people, and I am one of them, will tell you that XP and most other operating systems deteriorate over time. Solve : mic problems in windows?

Answer»

Dear readers,

I came across a strange problem this week.
My microphone seems to behave weirdly. I can USE it to call my friends on skype, but I cannot use it on yahoo messenger (actually it used to work, until a few days ago, when I pressed talk button I could only see a flat line).
So I decided to check it and with the Sound Recorder I get another flat line. I decided to go to the control panel and do a hardware check, where they ask to read out loud some sentence and I can again hear my voice.
So from all of this I can state that probably my microphone (NEW one or old one tried both) and my driver are WORKING properly. So what am I facing here? Can this be CAUSED by any spyware or virus?
Has any of you come across a similar problem?
What can I do to use my mic in yahoo messenger again?

Please reply
Thank u all so much

Solve : Screen sideways after Hibernation?

Answer»

I have Windows XP Home on a Dell Laptop and just a few days ago it started booting up the screen sideways when I wake up the computer from hibernation.

The only way to get the screen normal again is by shutting down the computer, then starting it back up. Then the screen will come up with 640x480 resolution instead of 1024x768.

It has just started this a few days ago, so I did a SYSTEM restore back to a point when I wasn't having the trouble, but it is still doing it consistently. Please help me!!!  Right click on your desktop, click on Properties, and then go to the Settings tab and click the Advance button. If this is a newer driver there may be an option that lets you change your screen back to normal.

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]Thank you for that! I checked it out, and yes, there is a setting in there for changing the monitor layout.

But does that mean I will have to change the settings every time I hibernate my computer from now on? There must be something that is causing it to happen... Read this..Is this an old pc.....or a new one.....go to dells faq.....and see if you need a REG patch or an update.

I would say you may have downloaded the wrong video driver....for the adapter....or the video driver has got damaged /*corupted.

Run a test .
type dxdiag in the run box.....it should report any FAULTS.....with graphics....Thanks for the tips. I tried running that test on my computer (it is a new Dell Laptop, as of February). It said there were no problems on everything except on one test. On the Direct 3D Test, every time it tried to run the test, the screen would switch to 640x480 resolution, then automatically cancel the test, switch back to 1024x768 and tell me that I cancelled the test by pressing a key.

Does that sound like a video driver problem??Thanks for the helpful tips! I tried running the test you mentioned, and everything tested without finding any problems. However, on the Direct3D test, it wouldn't complete the test. The screen would switch to 640x480, cancel itself, switch back to 1024x768, and then tell me that I had canceled the test by pressing a key.

Does that sound like a video driver problem??What videocard is installed and what drivers are being used?

Never use Windows WDM drivers, they are horribly outdated and inefficient. Be certain to OBTAIN the latest drivers from the videocard manufacturer.Quote from another forum...

2. Run

Solve : Can't access XP machine shared docs?

Answer»

Be certain that the machines not being seen in the DHCP client list are not blocking the router with a firewall.

Add the router (192.168.2.1) to the safe zone list and see if this allows the DHCP client list to detect the computer. Quote

...
My routers IP has always been 192.168.2.1

AHA! we may finaly be getting someplace! I went into my router via the IP and it shows only FOUR computers, apperantly it cannot assigne DHCP to those on the hub! ...Only shared documents on the XPH is inaccessable. And the XPH can access the 98s shared docs, it just doesnt work FROM the 98 TO the XPH.

If the 4 computers on the hub are not listed, nothing is ever going to work right.  My router assigns IPs to all those on the hub.  Is there a page in your router that says:
DHCP Server - enabled
Starting IP Address - 192.168.2.1
Number of DHCP Users - 10 (or more)
Wait a minute...
Nevermind. Apperantly thats only active dhcp cliens (thats what it calls it, i have no idea what it means so don't ask lol). Now it only shows 2. Man this is soooo complicated. I may try merlins suggestion and start over from scratch.

As for finding a place where the router lists all DHCP clients, no i can't find one. It does say DHCP is enabled however.

On the Modem however it does give a start and end DHCP aderss (weird) Does this mean my modem AND router are trying to do DHCP?Concentrate on the router.
You said it was a "...Black Box ummm something something something 5 port router with print server function..."

Is this it?
No, srry. Didn't realize you needed specifics. Its a lr9603a actualy. if you go here:

http://catalog.blackbox.com/BlackBox/Templates/blackbox/mainscreen.asp and then hit the search button and do a search for the "lr9603a" it will come up with it. Mine is the usb version so it doesn't look exactly like the one shown (doesn't have the fancy silver thingy on it).

Oh, and my bad, I said it was a five port router when its realy a 4 port plus a WAN port.I would chose option 3

3: A sledge hammer                                                        Lol, thing is merlin I don't know WHICH one to sledgehammer! Before we end up with a harry potter book on PCS networking platform 3/4.........i would move one of win98 pc....thats not working to the one thats is....process of elimination.....logic... if this works....and do the same with the next one etc.....this will prove the net setting are out ....on the two win98..........i would place one of the winxp pcs in the middle.....after the hub...but thats me.....That's pretty cheap for a BlackBox.  I assume you didn't buy it.  Very few people have heard of them, unless you're an engineer.  All their stuff is expensive.  I'm just wondering who MAKES it for them.
Something is WRONG with the router setup or the router hardware.  Try plugging the hub into a different port.  Also, try different hub ports, maybe the one you're using is partially blown out (probably why it was free).  I  assume there is no online manual for the router.  Most routers are similar but not identical.

BTW, your network configuration is valid and should work.  Mine is identical.Ok, Merlin and commando

I have moved the hub to a differant port on the router and it did't help. I have plugged both the 98s that are having trouble into the router directally and it didn't help. I have tried moving all the computers plugged into the hub to differant ports on the hub and it didn't help.

More of nothing I'm afraid.

As for why this hub was free it was a gift from a friend who got it from a chemical company that was going out of buisness.

Also wouldn't it be kinda weird to be able to browse every other machine's shared docs FROM the machines on the hub EXCEPT the two troublesome 98s that can't browse the XPH?

And why can the third 98 on the hub browse the XPH even after swapping ports around?

Not to mention the two 98s that are having trouble browsing the shared docs on the XPH can get on the internet, and even play LAN games with the XPH!

AND the XPH --CAN-- see the shared docs on the two 98s that are being so contrary!

!!!

This is so mind blowing.

I also have a LINUX machine on the hub now, and irony of ironies, EVEN IT can get on the shared docs of the XPH!

I think its software.

If this keeps up I think I may finaly know what to use the sledgehammer on...

MYSELF!!! lol

(note I am by no menas angry with anyone here. I capitolized certain things to stress the point. I'm not even angry with the problem. tired mentaly YES! And after 50-some-odd posts here I am quite ready for it to be resolved lol. )What type of firewalls are installed?

Have you tried adding your Router (192.168.2.1) to the safe/trusted zone (Not Internet zone) of whatever firewall you are using? Quote
...

I assume you restarted the computers after reconnecting?  Or ipconfig release, renew?
Are all on the same workgroup, named "Workgroup"?
No good. tryed restrating MULTIPLE times on both the XPH and one of the 98s (the one that had the firewall) with BOTH the firewalls (the one on the XPH and the 98 ) off and with the 98 plugged DIRECTLY into the router.

no change.

The firewalls are norton firewall on the XPH (the windows firewall IS TURNED off while the norton firewall is on) and a sygate free eddition firewall on the 98. (the other 98 that is having trouble has no firewall)

Well I think that does it for me for tonight. I might be back on sunday I might not, all depends. But I WILL probly be back on monday so feel free to continue to ask questions and hopefully there will be an answer rattling around in there somewhere.

Since I'm signing off for the night I just want to say thnx to all you guys. Raptor, Commando, merlin, Doc, and anybody else I forgot! Though the results have yet to turn up, your effort is much appreciated!Maybe this is the reason for your problems>http://www.duxcw.com/dcforum/DCForumID2/346.html

And the workaround is this>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;301041&sd=tech

or even this maybe>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308582&sd=techAHA!!! IT WORKED!! IT WOR.... Wait a minute... No it didn't.

It worked for one restart on the 98.2, then after installing the netBEUI on the 98.3 and restarting the 98.2, the 98.3 and the XPH, the 98.2 could not get on the XPH's shared docs any more. AND the 98.3 STILL cant get on the XPH even with the netBEUI installed.

(plz note that I didn't uninstall the previouse protocalls as the article suggested, see why below.)

In an odd coincidence the 98.3 has a network everywhere NIC the same (or nearly the same) as in the article you gave me. Odd. Perhaps this is the source of all my woes. I will try unplugging the 98.3 from the network and restarting the XPH and the 98.2 and see what I can see.

Update:
AHA! AGAIN!!! Apperantly after a loooooooongggg list of things to try the 98.3 IS the culprit! I unplugged that machine and VIOLA! I can get on the XPH. Must be something with that NIC. So, a word to the wise, don't by a network everywhere NIC, it is not worth the woe.

Many many thnx again to you all! Especialy Merlin for the article that proved the final piece of the puzzle.

Solve : Computer crashing (because of antivirus?)?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm currently faced with a huge problem.  My computer has been giving me the BSOD for days now, with a whole host of errors.  The current one says:

"A device driver attempting to corrupt the system has been caught.  The faulty driver currently on the kernel stack must be replaced with a working version"

It then has reference to SAVRT.SYS, which I have already found is part of Norton Antivirus.

My antivirus is slightly out of date, and I wanted to uninstall it and try a different version of norton I have, but I can only start up my computer in safe mode.  When I do this, it won't let me uninstall, because it says the uninstaller won't run in safe mode.

Does anyone have any advice? I really appreciate it.1. Why do you think your virus scanner is at fault?
2. Has it found any viruses?
3. Have you recently installed new hardware?
4. Have you recently installed new software?
5. Have you scanned for spyware?
6. What are your system specifications?

Try the following:

1. Before Windows XP loads, press F8
2. Select Last known good configuration from the list and press Enter.1. Why do you think your virus scanner is at fault?

A couple weeks ago when this started, I believe it was in the middle of running a scan.  Also, the blue screen gave me "savrt.sys", which when searching google, I found is associated with norton antivirus.

2. Has it found any viruses?

The online scans I have tried have not found any viruses.  I also tried the malicious hardware removal tool.

3. Have you recently installed new hardware?

No new hardware, unless sticking USB keys in my computer would do that.

4. Have you recently installed new software?

I can't think of any.

5. Have you scanned for spyware?

Yes, nothing was found.

6. What are your system specifications?

Windows XP home edition, service pack 2
Pentium 4 2.20GHz, 512 MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4400
Logitech mouse/keyboard

I realize that's bare-bones.  I have no idea what all I need to let you know or how to get it.

From SYMANTEC:

Please be aware that this issue can occur if the Symantec REDIRECTOR is not
updated in your computer. I suggest that you please update Symantec
Redirector in your computer. Symantec Redirector (Symredir) is a set of
shared NETWORK drivers that allow Norton AntiVirus and other Norton products
to filter incoming and outgoing data for malicious or undesired content.

The Redirector intercepts data coming into, or leaving your computer, and
redirects it to a temporary location on your HARD drive where it processes
the data, and then sends the data to its intended destination. For
information on this subject, please refer to the document provided below
that will assist you in updating Symantec Redirector files in your computer.

I also suggest that you please update Symevent files in your computer.
Several files make up the module known as Symevent. Symevent is used by many
different Symantec PROGRAMS in all versions of Windows and is updated
periodically. Symevent files are low-level drivers that are used by many
different Symantec programs in all versions of Windows, and they are updated
periodically. When you install current Symantec software, these files will
normally be updated. For information on this subject, please refer to the

If you take Norton OUT of the msconfig start-up list whilst in safe mode you should then be able to boot to the desktop and remove and re-install the program.

I use AVG Free Home Edition after having too many problems with Norton.

Which version of NAV do you have?

Is there a virus on any of your USB keys?

The soundcard is indeed located at the back of the system case.

However, many modern computer cases feature 2 (two) connectors in front of the computer which are Pink and Teal(Greenish). These can also be used to connect your Microphone and headphone to. Examine the front of your system case first.

The following images may be of use to determine what the soundcard looks like and what connectors you may encounter:

If you have NERO you can use the Wave Recorder and your SoundBlaster (or other) sound card.

Windows SoundRecorder is only good for short excerpts.

If you right-CLICK on the speaker in your systray and  'Open Volume Control' a panel should open...

Click on options and Properties to choose which device (microphone) you need to add and check Playback or RECORDING.

Solve : Cannot Install XP After Upgrade?

Answer»

Hi,

Can anyone help with this one?

I have just upgraded a Presario 5441 to 20Gb and am UNABLE to install XP onto it. I installed and formatted the HDD and it is set to cable select, it also looks OK on CHKDSK.

Each time I try it comes up with the error code:

IRQ not less or equal, XXX Stop: 0x0000000A0xFFBE000,0XOOOOOOO2,0X807D4AD4

I have removed the modem, but the Bios won't let me access the onboard peripherels, ALTHOUGH it does LIST the IRQ's numbered from 1 UPWARDS, which does not give me any clues as to which one could be the IRQ that's at fault.

Answer»

first of all, i'm not sure if i'm in the RIGHT place....but here goes:

a while back, Circuit City had a great sale on western digital hard drives so i picked up an 80 gig for $30 (not bad huh?). i then installed it as a slave drive (leaving the original as master) i named it my [glb]f:[/glb] drive. but here's the PROBLEM-
BEFORE
c:= original hard drive
d:= cdrom drive
e:=cdrw drive
[glb]f:=usb port (where i'd plug in to upload my pics, mp3's)[/glb]

AFTER
c:= original hard drive
d:= cdrom drive
e:=cdrw drive
[glb]f:=secondary hard drive (oops!!!) [/glb]
my question is: how do i retrieve my usb port?
Thanks in advance for any help...Hey, blonde:

Most personal computers have more than one USB port.  You may leave the external hard drive plugged into the one port and plug your MP3 player or digital camera in one of the other ports.

Windows should automatically detect the player or camera and ask you if you want to upload the music or images to your computer's hard drive.

USB devices are designed to be hot-swappable (that is, you may plug them in or unplug them while the computer is still on).  I would not recommend unplugging the external hard drive while the computer is on, however, but it should be safe to plug in your camera or other device in the free USB port.

Regards,
Doc
hi Doc,

thanks for your reply. actually, it's not an external hard drive, its internal. i don't know if that makes a difference.

when i plug the cable into either port, i get nothing...it used to give me a little pop up window telling me that new hardware is present and the i would go to "start" then"run" then "f:/" and my files would come up...now...nothing. i type in g:/ but that's not valid.

should i uninstall the hard drive the reinstall it and assign it to another letter..."m:/" or something?Hi Swanhild

You SAY you named your slave hdd f: - did you alter the drive letters after boot time?  Drive letters are allocated by your OS at boot time so your slave should have been D: not f:

See here: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/part_Letter.htm

hi Dusty,

thanks for your reply. the hd was installed as a slave drive, but it was installed as a  storage drive, not a boot drive which might explain why it did not assume  d:/

i was able to go into disk management and change the path for the hd. it is now my m:/ drive and it works PROPERLY

my original problem still exists, i can not locate any of my usb ports. i used to plug in my irock and see "removable media storage" as drive f:/ when i went into "my computer". i can not locate any usb port anywhere as an accessible drive after i plug in my media. am i missing something simple?  apparently it was something simple!!! not sure what i did, but everything is working properly...my f:/ drive is now recognized as my front usb port and my m:/ drive is now mass storage!!!

thanks for your suggestions, guys! Why have all our CH experts gone quiet?

Solve : Standby help please?

Answer»

Hello! I somehow got this to work on my older computer, but on my new one I fogrget what setting to use...  :-/  When I am away from the computer, I prefer to put it on standby... However, when I want the computer to wake up from standby, I HAVE to press the power button for it to wake up... I don't like that too much... On my older computer, all I would have to do is press a button on the keyboard or move the mouse and it would wake-up... Does anyone know how I can get this to work?

[glb]Flame[/glb]hi Flame,

i'm no expert, but i do have this currently configured on my computer. i have XP so i will tell you what my settings are.
control panel/performance & maintenance/power options

you can choose various times to:
turn off monitor
turn off hard drive
system standby
system hibernate (should say "never")

make sure your computer is not "HIBERNATING" i believe that may be your problem. it should just be on standby

LET me know if that worksThanks for the reply! Actually, I do not even have Hibernation enabled... Here's what setting sare enabled...

Turn off Monitor: After 1 Hour
Turn of Hard Disks: Never
System Standby: Never

When I press the power button: Shut down
When I press the sleep button: Shut down

Now... Above, you can see that I said never use standby... That's becuase I want to use standby manually, and not have the computer go on standby after a certain amount of time...

[glb]Flame[/glb]alright, sorry i couldn't help! my keyboard does not have that feature. good luck! Thanks anyway! Anyone else have an idea?

[glb]Flame[/glb]The settings should all read never. in power options you could click the standby tab in the shutdown MENU then the shift key+ the enter key on the keyboard......it will enter the standby  mode.on later pcs some can be adjusted in the bios setup.....and other HARDWARE can stop this process......mice/graphics cards.....?hhhmm... A tricky situation... Let me contact dell for some information on that... Thanks! I'll post the result...

Solve : Print Screen Key?

Answer»

Hello.

I have a couple of questions.

When i use the key "print Screen SysRq" or "alt" + "print Screen SysRq"  on my keyboard, where did my IMAGE go?

The reason is because I cannot find the file on my desktop.

Thank You.Paint//click edit//then paste.....SD:

The image went to the Windows clipboard.  You must paste the image into another program (like Microsoft Word or Paint) by OPENING one of those PROGRAMS and pressing the CTRL and V keys together.

The image will stay on the clipboard till you copy something else, then it is replaced.

Regards,
DocThank you. I got it working. Thanks alot. Thanks sd for the feed back.another one solved we say phew!........and good evening doc

Yeah, M_2, gotta love the easy Qs!

And sorry about the post above, didn't check to see you had already posted before i clicked the Post button.

Win9x has a nifty little utility called "Clipboard Viewer". Most PEOPLE don't know its there and it is not installed by default. It ALLOWS you do see exactly what is in the clipboard, clear the clipboard, or save it as a clipboard image.

Doesn't the 4th person realise that his advice, if it is exactly the same, will not be of any more use than the first person his/her response?Raptor:

Good point!  There are times, however, that i think repeating something is a good idea.  I know i don't always FOLLOW someone's advice till i receive the same advice from someone else.  I suppose i'm just thick headed, sometimes.

Also, some people (myself included) often need to hear something repeated a few times till it sinks in--especially if the information is something new to them.  This might be why Christ often repeated himself, even when speaking to his closest friends?

You can set the boot order in the BIOS.okay i never took anything out ..... i cant get in my bios nothing shows up on my monter ..And you are certain that the mainboard is equiped with an AMI BIOS? That is the only BIOS according to this that would indicate Base 64K RAM failure with 3 beeps.

If you are certain, you should return the mainboard, because from what I have read, the 64K RAM failure can not be resolved?

You may wish to try to reset your BIOS first.yes im certain i have a AMI BIOS. is there another way that i can reset the bios . but i say one thing nothing comes up on my screen video monter .You can remove the CMOS battery for 10-15 seconds and then place it back. Solve : More Batch file Problems?

Answer»

Alright.  I'm using a batch file to update the version.h file of the projecy when I run the full build batch on it.  However, I've got a problem.

Code: [Select]echo.      unsigned long GetVersionDay()      { >> version.h
echo.                  char DAY[15]; >> version.h
echo.                  memset(&Day[0],0,15); >> version.h
echo.                  memcpy(&Day[0],&VERSION_DATE[4],2); >> version.h
echo.                  return atoi(Day); >> version.h
echo.      } >> version.h
echo. >> version.h
echo.      unsigned long GetVersionMonth() { >> version.h
echo.                  char Month[15]; >> version.h
echo.                  memset(&Month[0],0,15); >> version.h
echo.                  memcpy(&Month[0],&VERSION_DATE[7],2); >> version.h
echo.                  return atoi(Month); >> version.h
echo.      } >> version.h
echo. >> version.h
echo.      unsigned long GetVersionYear()      { >> version.h
echo.                  char Year[15]; >> version.h
echo.                  memset(&Year[0],0,15); >> version.h
echo.                  memcpy(&Year[0],&VERSION_DATE[10],4); >> version.h
echo.                  return atoi(Year); >> version.h
echo.      } >> version.h
Up until this point everything is working fine, but when I try to echo-append the lines with ampersands "&" in them the code tries to EXECUTE what comes after the & instead of just appending the thing into the file.  For example, in line 3 it will try to execute "Day[0]" as if it's a command.

I have no idea how to fix this.  Does anyone have any ideas? Some symbols are used by the batch processor itself which can have unintended results. Try preceding the & with a ^

Ex.

echo.   memset(^&Day[0],0,15); >> version.h

More importantly, why are you using a batch file to create a file that could be more easily created by any editor?

Just a thought. The reason I want to make it with the batch file is that I want hte whole thing AUTOMATED.  There's probably an easier way out there, but batch files is what I ended up doing.   :-/

Thanks for your advise though.    I'll check that out.I know sidewinder loves his dos.....but if you in hurry.... you could have look here>> its  your choice>http://www.robvanderwoude.com/index.htmlActually Merlin I would prefer to convert all Windows users to WinScript. For some reason everybody seems to be blindly attached to batch language. The new script for Longhorn (MSH/MONAD) looks SUSPICIOUSLY like VB.NET which will probably have everyone running back to batch language.

*sigh* WELL the more forward we go......the more backward we go?........nothing new i reckon!>>>master plan of msoft......clampdown of the hardware makers >>using msoft products....next clampdown on the software programmersAnother problem.  I want to have the date in a file name, problem is that the date is done like this: mm/dd/yyyy.  A file name can't have a "/' in it.  Any ideas on hwo to overcome that?Sorry ms can i impose on you?? you will get more results/answers if you post your thread in the dos section.....ah!  *feels stupid* yes, um....  I might.  Thank you.  *shuffles off*

Install the latest Windows XP security updates.

You should disable the debugger (if that is even possible) SINCE this is most likely a security related issue.main issue is how do I disable debugger?

regardsI doubt that is possible.

Does the computer only give you 60 seconds to perform what you have to and then shut down? It may be a virus.

Remove the virus, patch the security hole and the debugger will no longer CAUSE you disturbance.

I suggest that you read this article before trying to disable the debugger..I have uninstalled antivirus, no firewall etc just windows

Solve : font help. please?

Answer»

There is something WRONG with my fonts. All of my fonts are DIFFERENT and in the wrong sizes. I did not mess around with any of the settings nor do I have any viruses (I ran my Norton Anti-virus). I clicked the system restore button under the control panel under the performance and maintence section, and the first time it said "system restored" but it did not change the fonts back to it's orginal settings. So I decided to try it again in a later date. And this time it said "restore incomplete" and it said there were no changes.

Please help me out, it is very difficult to read the words on the computer screen, since they are so SMALL and in a bulky font. I have tried going under my internet options and I fiddling around there, but nothing seemed to work. Please help, thanks guys.If your PROBLEM is in Internet Explorer, select

i went under file types and for "file folder" and "folder"
i set the action listed for them as a defualt and now even if i change them it doesn't help...  odd...

Windows Explorer Opens Search Companion Rather than the Folder

If the Windows Explorer opens up the Search Companion rather than opening up the actual folder, the default setting for opening a folder is changed.

To correct this:

  1. Start Regedit
  2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Directory \ shell and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ DRIVE \ shell]
  3. Edit the default value to be explorer or none

Solve : notepad contents backup?

I have TWO drives C: and D: and want to reformat the C: DRIVE.

I have some documents in notepad.

If i backup the notepad into d: drive ( by cut and paste notepad into d: drive),

can i later retrive all the files of notepad (after reforatting and reinstalling windows in c: drive)?

If not , how can i backup all contents of notepad?

this i am asking bcos previously i had DONE the same thing but then i could access the notepad ionly, and no files within it.You seems to do a lot of cut& paste....why not save them to disks! If you plan on copying the notpad.exe file to you D drive then you reformat the c drive you will lose all your files. You need to copy the individual files. Do a search for *.txt and copy those files to you d drive. When you rebuild your computer remember to only FORMAT c: partition not the WHOLE drive.  I would also do what Merlin said copy them to disk to be on the safe side.

" This program has performed an illegal operration and will be shut down"

I see this notice when running many program and closing this dialogue box also CLOSES my programs.

But after deleting some files from that program ( SAY wordpad or my browser) this dialogue bos does not come again.

SO Does  it  represent a memory shortage?

1. Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE
2. Performance tab
3. Examine memory tabs to see if any exceed the TOTAL amount.

You MAY need to increase your virtual memory if you believe your are short on memory.

However, an illegal operation could be caused by a NUMBER of other things.

1. Scan for Spyware, Trojan Horses and Viruses
2. Clean your reigistry
3. Defragment HDD
4. Reinstall faulty programs
5. Run Checkdisk.

With the second link, just type the name of the process for which you are SEARCHING after the slash after the WORD processlibrary.

Solve : - Application Error - 0xc0000005?

Answer»

Please Help!

I am running xp home w/sp2 on my pc. Many programs won't run. Some work and others don't. The ones that don't work, when I try to open something, I get the 0xc0000005 error. For example, I will double click the norton antivirus icon on my taskbar and a small window pops up saying

"NMain.exe - Application Error .. The Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application."

I click ok and the window pops up again. I click ok again and it goes away. This also happens when I do ctrl+alt+del. I can't open the taskmanager. The same error (but with taskmgr.exe in the heading) appears. I have to click twice to close it. When I right click on my desktop and click on properties I get the same error (with rundll32.exe in the heading). I get the rundll32.exe error when trying to access anything in the control panel. I can't open the add/remove programs without getting the error. When I try to install something I get the (msiexec.exe) 0xc0000005 error also.

I don't understand why some programs work and others don't. IE and firefox both work and my internet connection is fine. I also can't access very much through the run command. I type in msconfig and nothing happens.

With my norton antivirus, I can't access it but it still works. I know this because a scheduled system check up runs everyday at 5:30 pm. I was able to run a virus scan through one button checkup. The scan came up clean. I also ran ad-aware se pro, Microsoft antispyware, and spybot and they came up with nothing also. So I don't think it is a virus or malware.

This problem started about 2 days ago. I don't know what caused it. Since it started happening though, I sometimes also have trouble booting up. Sometimes the windows boot screen will take 10-15 minutes. I also have trouble restarting/shutting down. It takes long and the taskmgr program not responding - end now - screen will pop up multiple times for different programs. I also think that maybe some things aren't loading right on startup. Before this problem, when I logged in to my user account, it would take a little longer for the startup programs to load...(not really long or anything) Now when I log in...everything is done loading very quickly. I think that some things aren't loading correctly.

Though I couldn't access msconfig through the run command, I checked my startup programs through microsoft antispyware and spybot. Everything looked fine. I couldn't load the taskmgr to look at the running processes so I used the adaware process watch. It was kind of complicated to understand so I just used the microsoft antispyware to view the processes. I think everything looked ok. I didn't notice anything suspicious.

I have tried various things to try to fix this problem, but since I don't know what EXACTLY is causing this problem, I haven't been successful. I have run windows update, updated my anti-virus, and run a disc check twice. I have tried to restore my computer to a previous date twice and been unsuccessful. I did a Google search and didn't find anything relevant.

I can go into safe mode and everything seems to work okay. I don't get the 0xc0000005 error and I can USE the run command and access the msconfig utility. I don't know what to do to fix this problem. I don't know if there is a problem with the registry or startup services or what....

I hope I have described everything sufficiently. If anyone knows a solution, please respond. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a version of Norton Antivirus earlier than version 8 installed?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;317153&Product=win2000

DocI looked at the events log. I'm not an expert at reading them, but I couldn't figure out what originally caused the error. I did see that the error first occured on the 10th. I really don't know what to make of the rest of the info.

I haven't installed any new hardware or adjusted firewall settings. I disabled Norton Systemworks and Internet Security and their services so they no longer run on startup. I still have the application error.

I have gone into safe mode and unticked all the boxes in the startup menu. I rebooted and still get the error. I can't even use windows notepad or calculator without getting the 0xc0000005 application error.

I have done scans with Norton antivirus, Trend Micro, Microsoft Antispyware, Spybot, and Ad-aware SE Pro. None found spyware/malware/viruses.

Any more suggestions? I appreciate any help.

I installed sp2 when it first became available. I haven't had any problems. I did use the windows update recently, but  there wasn't any problem with the update. I don't know if the update caused any conflicts.

I do have a logitech mouse, but I've had it for over a year with no prior problems.

In regard to Norton, I can't access the add/remove programs in the control panel. In safe mode I can, but I get an error message when trying to uninstall software. It says that the windows installer can't work in safe mode.

As for viruses or malware, I have found none on my system. I have done scans with Norton antivirus, Trend Micro, Microsoft Antispyware, Spybot, and Ad-aware SE Pro. None found spyware/malware/viruses.

I don't know what else to do. Any other ideas?

ThanksKaylee:

NMain.exe is a Norton Antivirus executable program.  If it fails to initialize, it, or one of the files associated with it, is either corrupted or being prevented from functioning (by a virus, for example).

Try booting to Safe Mode and reinstalling NAV.  Put the NAV installation CD in the CD-ROM drive and see if the installation starts.  You may have to explore the CD and double-click a file named something like autorun.exe or setup.exe.

Solve : windows xp not starting successfully?

Kevin:

Windows XP is not compatible with every hardware device (especially older devices).  It may work with your motherboard, but not your HARD drive, for example.

You should check the Hardware Compatibility List to see if your hard drive and motherboard are listed:

Regards,
DocIf that is a SATA HDD, are you loading the correct drivers? Can you boot to the XP CD and run the recovery console? If so try running: chkdsk /R , and see if that sorts out the file system.

Disconnect all peripherals except for the mouse, keyboard, and monitor, before RESTARTING. Quote

Since this is WinXP-Pro-x64, Asus has MANY updated drivers for this OS.  This indicates they are aware of the problems and are making an effort to correct it.  Here they are:  A8V-E Deluxe

When i switch on the computer, it sits idle for about five minutes with the Hewlett PAckard Logo on the screen before BEEPING and kick starting itself.

It then works fine, but quite slow.

I think it started doing this after defragging the machine.
