Solve : Windows ME not responding?

Answer»

Hi,

A pleasant day to everyone.

I just installed Windows ME from with a clean HD but when i began using it, there were a couple of times when my windows isn't responding. This ususally occurs when i am browsing files in my windows explorer and my MOUSE cursor just suddenly stops.

I hope anybody can help me with this? I'm just starting to build my interest in windows troubleshooting and im starting to like it..

Thanks guys.
Rene  \m/ Right click on 'my computer' and select
Properties>Hardware>Device Manager
and look for any YELLOW exclamation marks indicating a driver problem.

Also try
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Admin Tools>Event Viewer
And look for any logged errors.Hello René, welcome to the forum. How big is the drive which you are using? If the partitions are too big you may well find that the system hangs.

Can you give a résumé of your system specifications please, as this can help us to help you better.

Is your system in English?Hi, here are some info about my system,

Unit: Toshiba Dynabook Satellite 2060
Processor: AMD K6, 266 MHz
RAM: 64 MB
HDD (Primary Partition): 28 GB

I am not sure if the system is in English, but If i remember it right (or If i understood your question correctly), I installed it in English language, however, i can see japanese characters in the keyboard (the owner of the system bought his unit in Japan).

I can't remember the other specs but i hope these 4 can already help.

Thanks!

You could certainly do with more RAM. Your Toshiba Satellite 2060 has a maximum RAM capacity of 160Mb but the largest module which is readily available from Crucial is 128 Mb and you can only FIT one as there is only one RAM slot available in the Toshiba.

I find that ME runs better on a 4096-8192 Mb partition so I would try shrinking the drive down to a reasonable size as you get smaller clusters.

I use TeraByte Unlimited's BootIT NG Partition Resizer.Which Anti-Virus & Firewall programs do you use, and what are you using to guard against Trojans?i'll try to look for the 160Mb. Thanks :-)

Im not familiar with TeraByte Unlimited's BootIT NG Partition Resizer. Is it freeware? can you tell me more about this tool?

I dont have any antivirus installed yet... i dont have that much system
tools/installers with me, just asking with friends if they have them.since im just starting to learn on pc hardware stuffs, im yet to compile these
tools with me.The system is very old, excessive dust build-up may cause overheating problems. Be certain that all fans and heatsinks are properly maintained.thanks for the note. well i know its old, but im trying to rescue this system and make it usable. Besides, my friend ( the owner of the system) is not really after for a performance. And solving the hang-up issue can already satisfy him.

is there a way that i can verify that dust build up or overheating causes the issue?.. i can see that its fan is functioning well and the heatsinks are in place.

thanks guys.

If you can not see any dust, it is perfectly clean and your problems are most likely not heat related.okei, i thought theres some techy steps needed to verify that..

thanks very much!

I would guess that you'll only find a 128 Mb module. Click on the TeraByte link below. It is not freeware but for US$ 60 for all four programs, BootIT NG boot manager and Partition Resizer, Image for Windows, and Image for DOS, it is very good value.

.....is this a ps2 mouse? or the accupoint.one......RUN defrag.....use disk clean up.......DIABLE sytem restore and run a virus scan.....Do you have  internet explorer 6.....installed on your laptop?
