Solve : Question regarding RAM with XP systems??

Answer»

I am building a new computer and i was wondering if Windows XP systems operate over 2GB of ram. A friend of mine told it would not.

thanks
GenjoSanzo625.....I wasnt aware that windows ever determined the amount of Ram allowed .......other than requiring a minimum amount to properly function.
The amount of ram is related to what the max is that any given MOBO will support .  Some boards will accept 4 gigs......   So perhaps you could ask your friend for his referance source and we can POST it here for all to see ......    It's always great to learn something new .

dl65  I believe that Windows XP supports 4096MB RAM.Windows XP Pro will support 4·0 Gb of RAM (4 X 1024 Mb modules) if the motherboard will accept this amount.

There are systems that will only report this as being 3·75 Gb of RAM even though there is 4 Gb present.

What do you intend doing with your computer?

I would probably put in 1 Gb of RAM and see if you really need more.

My mainboard will only accept 3 x 512 Mb SDRAM modules.Some additional reading:

Solve : administrator account has disappeared?

Answer»

I have had a Windows XP computer for about a month. When I created a new user account, I COULD no longer find my administrator account on a regular startup. However, the administrator account does appear in Safe Mode.Greetings, bluespiano.

From what I understand, this is normal - the default 'Admin' login is usually no longer displayed when you create other user ACCOUNTS for yourself.Caliban - WELCOME to the forum .
When you say "former 11B" are you talking MOS?Hi, Allan.

Yes - I was a groundpounder (11B), as well as MOSs 33S (Electronic Warfare Systems Repair) and 26V (Strategic Microwave Systems Repair), 1974-'85.

Nice forum - looking forward to helping and learning, if y'all will have me.  Glad to have another grunt   (11F and 12E).Geez - 12E - heavy stuff!

I started out w/ basic at Jackson, infantry and jump schools at Benning, then hooked up with 10th Group at Devens (302nd SOD ASA, where I did the ASA and USAISD electronics schools), '74-'78.

The rest of the time, I skated... I was a few years before you and went a few different places .

And the 12e assignment was interesting - played with stuff I'm still not supposed to talk about - but didn't stay in that detachment long - was only sent there for some specialized training.

bluespiano - sorry for hijacking your thread.

Solve : Forgot password in my laptop computer Hp?

Answer» PLEASE me how to retrieve password...I cant enter  or login when I type my password... i tried the safe mode STILL cant.. still blocking and ask a password. You can reset a lost Windows password with 4 methods below:
1. Another valid administrator account which can normally log on.
2. A password reset disk or a repair DISC.
3. Third-party software to create a bootable password reset CD/DVD or USB, like Windows Password Breaker, Ophcrack.
4. Re-install. Will lose data.

From this article: http://www.recoverwindowspassword.com/windows-7-password-recovery.htm(To create a password reset disk, you need to log on Windows 7 with the account that you want to create a password reset disk for. Then type password reset disk in the Start search box, press Enter. And the Forgotten Password Wizard will appear. Click Next on the wizard Windows to start. Solve : Netbook to TV lead problem?

Answer»

Hi all, I'm new to the site.  I'm a member on freepchelp.co.uk but it seems to have disappeared?

Anyway, I've bought a lead to connect my netbook to my tv to use it as a monitor.  It has the 15 pin connector on one end and 3 RCA connectors on the other - RED, Green and Blue.  I plugged it into the appropriate terminals on the tv but can't view whatevers on the netbook screen.  I've tried changing display settings within the computer and tried various combinations with the RCAs.

This is the lead I bought: [urlhttp://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280634772964&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT]

Are these coloured ends for audio only?  Do I need a yellow RCA for video?

Many thanks, Jon-Paul.I think you have to PRESS a function key, with the FN held down. On my  Dell I hit Fn + F8 and it GOES to the TV. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 26, 2011, 02:48:18 PM

Hi, I've just tried that with the F2 + FN button combination on the netbook (F8 is volume up key on mine)

Still get the same result.  I wonder if I would be better off with VGA to HDMI or VGA to Yellow, Red and White RCAs?

Are you PREPARED to lose all data on the pc? If so, boot to the XP CD, format the drive, do a new installation.

If not, we'll have to try to help you get the data off the drive (by slaving) and then do a format and new install.For backing to the log on screen box when we clicking on account.
we have 1 way fix this problems but until using CD boot ERD Commander.

Cause from:
1-Error or Corrupt file userinit.exe in C:\WINDOWS\system32
2-Wrong registry path this file.

START boot using cd boot ERD Commander and don't 4 get plug in usb with contain file userinit.exe copied from new machine. copy new file userinit.exe from yr usb to replace old file in C:\WINDOWS\system32.
then check registry path. start>type regedit and locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon point to userinit and double click on it and  check it wrong or not path. For right path is C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,. so if wrong path change to this.

I think it like difficult for no CD Boot ERD Commander. this is my a bit my experience for every one.
No way beside reinstall windows if no CD Boot ERD Commander to help. For info ERD Command i am not sure the source but i have it from my friend.

Thank

 I neither fully understand the above post nor how it comes to the conclusions it seems to, but please feel free to ignore it.You say you can click on Account User Name.
In that case restart the PC, press on Fx key to come to the option of Safe Mode.
Select Safe mode.
Select Administrator as user
Do not enter a password
Click OK

Can you come into XP Pro Safemode now or not ?
Close windows and reboot the PC.

Solve : I cannot remove a window marked resolution notive. I've tried from?

Answer»

instructions from Microsoft. NOTHING works. Help!!!! Quote

When posting make sure to keep the below guidelines in mind.

List as much about your computer as possible. This includes operating system (what version of Windows you are using), service packs, computer make/model, RAM, hard drive, sound and video cards, current adware/spyware/virus programs being used on a regular basis, do you have a "real" Windows CD, etc.

Be as thorough as possible with your description of your problem. What happens exactly, error messages, if any, what happened before this started, what you have tried, are you the only user, type of internet connection, what you have done inside the case, etc.

You cannot give too much information. about the system. Withholding information seldom solves a problem quickly, if at all. Please don't expect US to drag information out of YOU to SOLVE YOUR problem.
I don't understand your question at all. Please DESCRIBE your problem more clearly and in detail.If you are referring to a "Resolution Notice" try pushing the #2 button on your MONITOR to disable.  That may work.

Solve : taskbar disappearing?

Answer»

Please help! When I open a folder and right click on a file, taskbar disappears for 4 to 10 seconds (only wallpaper STAYS on), then it reappears again, but with the closed folder. If any of the programs were running at the time, they shut down. For EXAMPLE, I can't rename a file or similar. I tried to google it, but all I found was similar problems, including windows explorer - with instructions to rename it. I gave it a try, it resolved nothing. I also tried system restore, but no matter which date I set, there would be a MESSAGE - no CHANGES on your computer, try another restore point. Solve : New Found Hardware Wizard Window?

Answer»

On a recently purchased home built computer (Frankenstein parts)  ASUS M-Board, WIND Xp, IE8, . . in a PCI slot in the back I added a Dual Monitor video card (this is the 3rd computer I have used this same card  in . . I run 3 monitors) and it has Always been Plug & Play.  Now,  when I boot up,  on my desktop I am left with a good SIZE window that says NEW FOUND HARDWARE WIZARD  and asks me to install the Installation Disk so as to make it work properly.  I also get a balloon window down by the clock saying new hardware has been found which may have been installed improperly.  The NON-Problem is that everything works just Super-Keeno as it always has with previpus computers.  As far as I'm concerned , I have no system PROBLEMS,  Soooooo,  how can I turn this Hardware Wizard Window OFF.  FEEL free to ask  of any details I have omitted.  THX.Here is the general method of avoiding this annoyance.
You remove the card. (Power off, of course.)
You use the built in video card. Remove the driver, set it to just plain generic VGA.
Reboot in Safe mode, VGA.
Install the software for the PCI card.
Reboot and let Windows 'discover' that you have both a new card and the software.
You may have to reboot again to get it right.

There is no national explanation as to how this works.

What is and what does the following do:
1) Primary DOS Partition
2) Extended DOS Partition
3) Logical DOS Drive(s) in the Extended DOS Partition

Which partition is associated with the following:
4) Floppy disk drive(A: Drive)
5) C: Drive
6) D: Drive(the drive to play Cd-ROM)

7) How many percentage of the memories is allocated to each partition normally?

hope anyone can enlighten me on those questions. Links would prove useful but sometimes i can't understand even though i read them. so words coming out from the mouth is a BETTER "resource".

Your terminology is wrong. Drive SPACE is NOT memory.

Floppy drive is always A: unless, if you have two floppy drives, the second one is B: The Primary DOS drive (which should be set Active in the fdisk program) becomes the drive C: boot drive.

The Extended DOS drive is required so that the next partition butts up against the Primary DOS drive extending it to hold up to THREE Logical drives.

A Logical drive is a drive Partition which acts in a similar way to a real drive, but it is not a real Physical drive such as a slave drive.

If you partition the drive with an Active Primary DOS drive C: , an Extended DOS Partition (No drive letter, as it is an Extension and not a drive capable of  holding data) and three Logical drive PARTITIONS D:, E: & F: then the CD-ROM drive letter will become G:

Percentage is a difficult question. It is better to give the full drive size remembering that the manufacturer's stated drive size is usually expressed as a Decimal size.

The usable drive size is expressed in Binary sizing.

Thus a 10 Gb drive works out at 9.31 Gb

1,000,000,000 Bytes divided by 1024 three times, giving Kilobytes, Megabytes and Gigabytes.

Need more, just holler!

Quote
What is and what does the following do:
1) Primary DOS Partition
2) Extended DOS Partition
3) Logical DOS Drive(s) in the Extended DOS Partition

Quote
1. Create Primary DOS Partition - Choosing this option you will be prompted to use maximum space. If you specify yes this will use up to 2 GB if creating FAT16 partitions or up to 32 GB if using FAT32. If you choose no you will be able to specify how large you would like the partition to be. NOTE you will need to create a primary partitions before being able to create an Extended or Logical DOS partitions.

2. Create Extended DOS Partition - If you are using FAT16 and have a 2 GB or higher hard drive or have only specified a small portion of the hard drive as the Primary partition use this option to create the Extended DOS partition(s) (other drive assignments). The Extended DOS partition will be used to hold the Logical DOS drives therefore use the maximum space left on the hard drive.

3. Create Logical DOS Drive(s) in the Extended DOS Partition - This option is used after you have created an Extended DOS partitions. Once the Extended DOS partition has been created you then can specify the sizes of other partitions you wish to create.

Quote
Which partition is associated with the following:
4) Floppy disk drive(A: Drive)
5) C: Drive
6) D: Drive(the drive to play Cd-ROM)

4. None.
5. For simplicity sake, look upon a HDD as a complete cake. You can chop the cake in as many parts as you would.
6. None.

Quote
7) How many percentage of the memories is allocated to each partition normally?

Drive space. Not memory.

7. User defined.

Answer»

We purchased a new Dell computer in January. MY husband and I have been playing around with the old one, A Gateway2000 Pentium11 with Windows98. We decided we would try and install Windowsxp from the CDrom given us with our new computer!( Are you getting the feeling we are dummies now?!!!).......it installed, but then when we went to do a setup we ran into problems....
How can we remove The XP and start all over, and what can we do?
ps. We are just doing this as a learning experiment and fun so we are not paniced, but we would like to  get this set up for our neighbors to use. ( we are both senior citizens and not too computer savey!)
Thank you in advance for any help.

Do you have the Windows 98 SE OEM (or System Restoration) CD that came with the Gateway computer?

Regards,
Docunfortunately no....we have the Windows 98 updateCD.
By the way, I sure love your ID!! That is why I am a rejoicing1  !!The reason that it didn't work is becuase Dell, along with other computer manufacturers have installed a security device, which only allows their computers to have the OS installed on... It's hard to explain, but in simpler terms... You can only use those CDs on the Dell computer... Sorry!  :-/

[glb]Flame[/glb]Which means that what you are trying to do is illegal. I would format the '98 computer and re-install '98.

A Pentium II and probably too little RAM plus a small drive size is not really good enough for XP.

Still these might come in use...

XP Compatability Test
XP Partition Management
XP Installing Recovery Console

RAM And What it Does
RAM Virtual Memory Paging

RE-INSTALLING WINDOWS 98Wow I didn't know that. I was under the impression that you could use a CD once you purchased it, at least for your OWN use. Thank you. I will try now to reformat and reinstall the Windows 98. Any links on how to do that? Thanks everyone for your help.RE-INSTALLING WINDOWS 98 Quote

RE-INSTALLING WINDOWS 98

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One question......when I boot up it asks me what I want to do
1. Windows XP set up or
2.Windows 98.
If I choose Windows 98, it boots up fine as usual.
Is there anyway that I can go in and remove Windows XP,( whatever DID get installed?) In " My computer", what would it look like? I did a search yesterday and by " dates" it would appear that there are a lot of files on the day we tried to install it. I just don't want to go in and remove some important files...........
Hope this makes sense.
Yeah, it's good to know relief from guilt and stress is always just a prayer away! (Philippians, chapter 4).
When you say you have the "Windows update CD" do you mean that you have the Windows upgrade CD?  If this is what you mean, then do you also have the installation floppy DISKS (or CD) for Windows 95 or some previous operating system?
Blessings,
Doc
Yes, guilt free is great!! Have to keep reminding myself of that fact.
Now on to the questions.......
We have the Upgrade, yes. Sorry for the confusion. My hubsand thinks we have a Windows 95 CD if I haven't given it a toss. He will search for it, and I will let you know.
Very true.
If you have the Windows 95 CD and the Windows 98 CD you will be able to install Windows 98 again.  The advantage to this is a two-fold one: First, this will allow you to reformat the hard drive, which will erase the Windows XP operating system.  Second, this will allow you to remove any private information (such as your credit card number) or files (such as letters you have written) to which you do not want the next owner of the computer to have access.  So, let us know if you your husband finds the Windows 95 CD of floppy disks.
If he does not find it (or them), it is still possible to remove Windows XP (that is, if the setup program saved the data to uninstall the operating system).  In this case, you will then have to go through the long process of removing any documents, Internet Explorer favorites, address book ENTRIES, and other files and settings to which do not want the next owner of the computer to have access.
Let us know, then Mac or Flame or i will suggest what to do next.
Good MORNING. Had to help with my sister yesterday who has cancer so have had to set my computer woes on a back burner.  How would I know if Windows XP  " uninstall"  is on the computer. What would the file look like?
Probably another silly question.
Rejoicing1
Rejoicing:
Sorry to hear about your sister; i'll pray for her.
To answer your question, the uninstall XP option is only available if you are able to get to the XP desktop.  After reading your posts again, i believe i was mistaken that this option is available to you because the setup program did not complete the installation of XP.
Now, to get rid of the message to choose which operating system you want, the easiest way is to edit the boot.ini file that the Windows XP setup created.  You have to be careful doing this, however, because making a mistake in the file will mean you will not be able to start Windows 98 till you correct the mistake.
There are at least two safe things you may change in the file:
A.  The default operating system should be changed to Windows 98 (right now it must be set to select XP setup).
B. The amount of time for the computer to wait before selecting Windows 98 should be set to zero.
Once these changes are made and saved in the file, your computer will seem to boot to 98 as normal.  Then all you may want to do is delete the files that the Windows XP setup program created (that is, if you want to create more space on the hard drive to install programs and save documents, etc.).  If it were me, i'd just delete the ARC path to the setup program in the boot.ini file, but i would not suggest you do this, as making a mistake will cause problems.
Of course, if you do find the Windows 95 installation CD (or set of floppy disks) then it will be easier, as i mentioned in the above post.  Let us know if you want instructions as to how to edit boot.ini.
Blessings to you and yours,
Doc
Solve : Defragmentation of XP Home?
Answer»
I have defraged my Home XP a number to times in one day and the result is this my QUESTION is why won't it defrag fully and how do I get it to.  ThanksTry defragging in safe mode.Even though you are USING XP Home, try the 30-day evaluation copy of Diskeeper 9 PROFESSIONAL, and see if the included Frag-Shield program finds anything wrong with the Master File Tables.
Also delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder and try running defrag again.
Use CCLEANER and EmpTemp to clean up your Hard-Drive.
"Run Disk Cleanup and remove all but the last restore point. See if your System Restore cache and Recycle Bin size is set at a reasonable level (Say 1024Mb) on each drive, and reduce the IE Temporary Internet Files cache and History cache to the minimum. Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files. Unhide all files and FOLDERS and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and remove their entries from Add-Remove programs. Then remove the contents of:
The C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder
The C: WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder
The C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder
The C:\Windows\pchealth\Datacoll folder, and...
The C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.
(You can add these folders to EmpTemp if you have this program installed.) Then run chkdsk and defrag."ojas:
You likely have some processes, services or applications running in the background that are keeping the disk defragmenter from finishing the job.
If FED's suggestion doesn't do it, try starting Windows XP in diagnostic mode:
1. Click Start > Run...
2. In the Run... text box, type msconfig and click OK.
3. In the System Configuration utility, choose Diagnostic Startup and click OK.
4. Restart Windows in Safe Mode and attempt to run disk defragmenter once again.
Let us know if that doesn't cure it.
Solve : Crazy laptop, can't reinstall xp?
Answer» HEY guys,
First I'm from the netherlands so English is not my main language...
My problem:
I bought a second hand laptop for 10 bucks. It is an dell latitude d520 and the disc drive doesn't work.
The problem is that sometimes suddenly the comp will type it's own  KEYBOARD. i hear very much ping ping ping (system alert sound) very fast (like prrrrrring) i hope you understand.
Then it stops, this is very annoying + when you click on a application or folder it shows the preferences and information about That item in stead of opening it. You can only open it By RIGHT mouse click -> open.
OK, so i thought about reinstalling "Windows xp sp2" i still have an old copy laying here.
But since there is no cd drive anymore, i should install it from a usb stick.
I googled and found a very handy and popular program to make a bootable usb stick. (forgot name...)
I plugged it in, rebooted and pressed f12. then i choose  boot from usb-device --> the screen goes black and i see a blinking white line totally right upp. that will stay for ever...
Please say what this could be?
ps:IF I Connect an EXTERNAL usb keyboard while in xp, the same problem occurs so it is not because of a broken laptop keyboard...
very much thanks in advance!     Sounds like the keys are stuck from dirt buildup.  When you state disk drive what disk drive hard drive CD/DVD?
Get a can compressed air (or several) and blow out the keyboard, disk drive, mouse buttons, any place you can blow air through with out removing case.  You can also hold the system upside down and gently rub your hand over the keys that will some time dislodge allot of the dirt and stuff too.
Which mouse button are you clicking on?  You can configure the mouse button to act any way you want (ALMOST) through the control panel then selecting mouse.
Sounds like Window's Registry is corrupted.  You may attempt to repair the Registry this way:
1. Get a blank, formatted floppy disk.  From a computer with an Internet connection, go to http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and click on the Windows Me (OEM) link to download the files for a Windows Me boot disk, and SAVE them to the floppy.
2. Put the Windows Me boot disk in your computer's floppy drive and power it up.
3. At the A: prompt, type scanreg /restore and then press ENTER.
4. Select the most recent backup date, and then choose Restore.
5. When the Registry is restored, press CTRL, ALT, DEL to restart your computer.  It should boot normally, but let us know if it does not.
Solve : Windows Setup Requires?
Answer»
I have spent all MORNING on a problem, and I am at my wits end!
The morning started, I wanted to downgrade XP to 98 so I reformatted my drive and lost XP
So then I tried to SETUP WIN98, i can begin the setup for WIN98, but it says first that it wants to do a system check, and when it does the system check it says WINDOWS SETUP REQUIRES 74XXXX BYTES
Then the computer freezes (often it will freeze before it even outputs this sentence) and I am screwed!!!
Any ideas? My C: drive says on FDISK that it is the MSDOS Primary Partition and has 14 gigs of free space!
Any help will be VASSSSSSTLY appreciated Was XP set up on FAT32 or NTFS? Did you delete the old partitions with fdisk and make new ones and did you Enable Large Drive support when using fdisk?
This bootdisk has the Delpart program on it in CASE the old partitions prove difficult to delete:
DELPART BOOTDISK
What makes you want to go back to '98 if I might ask?
Thank you for such a clear response, I'll try to answer as well as I can
XP Was set up on NTFS, I reinstalled XP then to be on FAT32.
I deleted the old partritions, and set up a new one with Large Drive support on.
I am going back to '98 because I just like it better, for what I need the computer to be doing (I am setting it up for a 'recording studio')
Maybe a read error somewhere. Have you tried re-seating the RAM modules. How much RAM does the system have?
When you had finished formatting did you run scandisk and do a surface check? If not try the drive manufacturer's drive diagnostic diskette and test the drive and use a RAM diagnostic diskette to test the RAM.Steve Benjamins........Did you format the drive first ?
I'm curious to know what win 98 does better than win xp ...other than freeze up .......and flash up ........"you have preformed an illegal operation "
let us know
dl65  The system has 256 Megs of RAM. How would I go about re-seating the RAM modules?
Yes I formatted the drive first, and I tried to do Scandisk on Drive C: but it says it can't run scandisk on c:
So to clarify better what has happened, is I have formatted c: and now I can't install anything
I have none of the manufacturers drivers with me anymore this is a bit of an older computer and my dad (who doesnt know enough about CPU's) threw them out some time ago.
Is there a way I can download a RAM diagnostic diskette? Cause I think that might clue me in on the problem.
Thanks for the help so far
SOMETHING is wrong if you can't run scandisk.
Have you checked in the fdisk program if the drive is set A for Active?
FDISK SIMULATIONBTW, XP will run better with 512 Mb or more RAM.
RAM Reseating & Fitting PDF FileYa the drive is set as Activeload the win98 boot floppy at the A:\> SYS C:
Answer»
ok i ve got a problem thats been bugging me for a year my computer keep freezeing. it alwasy freezes on BOOT up it alwasy freezes on games to. Ive tryed reformating like 5 times taht didnt help. I took the new sound card that i had in and replaced it with my old one and it worked fine for a while  then it started to freeze again. i defraged it. i cheacked for viruis , ad-ware, and spyware, and all my test results were SAYING there were no problems. The only game that i ahve on my computer now is World of Warcraft and it freezes when im playing and im forced to reboot its getting EXTREAMly annoying. All im asking is can u tell whats wrong with my computer????
system specs.......required.........Bret:
It may be any NUMBER of things. Try these troubleshooting steps:
1. The video card or DirectX may be the cause.  Check Window's Device Manager for a conflict between your video card and some other device connected to your system.   Run dxdiag (click Start > Run and type DXDIAG and click OK.  Run all the tests to make sure your Windows DirectX software is not causing the problem.
2. Check for overheating.  The fact that your computer hangs when you are playing graphic-intensive games may be a sign of too much heat inside the case.  Dust keeps your system from properly COOLING.  Buy a can of compressed air, open up the computer case, and spray out all the dust (especially the dust clogging the vents).  But don't blow the dust into the case, blow it out, instead.  While you have the computer case open, power up the machine and check to see that all the fans are inside the case (especially the one attached to the CPU) are spinning and not MAKING any loud noises.  If any of the fans are not working properly, take it to a computer repair shop to have them replaced.
3. The power supply (which is really a power converter) may be dying hard.  If it fails to provide the proper voltages (either too much or too little voltage) the system will lock up.  The fact that this happens when you start your computer means that the power supply may be the culprit.  Try taking it to the shop and having them replace the power supply. If that doesn't fix it, you'll still have a spare just in case it does fail in the future (which they often do).
If those three steps don't work, let us know and one of us will make more suggestions.
Every time I go to a WEBSITE or open a page it only OPENS to about 90 percent of the size of the screen. I then go to the whozit up in the corner to enlarge it . How do I set the COMPUTER to make it COME up full sized every time? Please help. If you close IE with a full screen, next time you open it there will be a full screen there.
If your problem is when you open a second window, as a work around, when you open the undersized window, grab the TOP & sides with your curser & resize to stretch it out to (nearly) full screen. Then close it & when you click on another link it will open at the size you left it at.
Someone else may know how to make the 2nd window open as a full screen.
Now we know why m$oft is so chosy on what winxp runs.....Yeah, thanks for the info, MERLIN.
GUESS using Windows is a love-hate relationship (love all the software that is supposed to run on Windows, but hate all the security holes that forever need to be PLUGGED!)
I just WISH there were better alternatives than Mac or Linux.  Maybe in a few years from now?
What variant of Linux is advised?
Solve : built my own PC and had a question. I Time m?
Answer»
I recently built a new Pc and some utility people were WORKING on something down the street and KNOCKED the power out.  My computer RESTARTED fine but the system clock was a few years off.  Is something not right?  I think I was getting some messages that said something about cmos not having enough power or something like that.You should be ABLE to set the system clock back by entering the BIOS.
The CMOS is supplied by its own power source, unless the battery has become depleted, it can not have either too much or too LITTLE power for it to work properly.type time after the msdos/cmd prompt
Solve : Problem With Start Up.?
Answer»
Everytime the computer starts up I GET this message.
"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive \Device\Harddisk5\DR18."
(Sometimes the last number changes)
I get this message to these programs alongside with three options. (Cancel, Retry, IGNORE). I don't want to ignore this because it's just irritating and annoying.
WildTangent Game Channel: GameChannel.exe - No Disk
AXWIN Frame WINDOW: Yop.exe - No Disk
Auto TBar.exe - No Disk
aim.exe - No Disk
There are a couple more but they don't come up sometimes.
That's about it. I don't know what to do and I need help. If you need any extra information, please let me know. Thanks in advance.Try using WinPatrol -> http://www.download.com/WinPatrol/3000-8022_4-10381498.html?tag=lst-0-1
Once you have it DOWNLOADED, you can choose what programs you want to start when your computer boots up.
[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]It seems like you have not properly uninstalled the programs that produce the ERRORS.
I suggest that you use a registry cleaner.
Solve : Unable to completely Defrag Hard Drive?
Answer»
I have been unable to COMPLETELY defrag my hard drive. I have no virus, no spyware, no malware. I've used the defrag system in my WinXP home to no avail. Lots of framented files left. System tells me to defrag. The report tells me that C:\documents and settings\all users\applications amounting to 12.28 gb cannot be defraged. Has anyone had this trouble and if so how was it resolved.try doing it in safe mode......f8 on boot......also diskkeeper lite is the favorite of the year........are you using .......norton anti-virus........But try deleting ALL of the C:\Windows\Prefetch files first of all.
You might like to try out the 30 day evaluation copy of Diskeeper 9 Professional (not the Home version) and USE the program's Frag-Shield add-on to see if there is a PROBLEM with the Master File Tables or MFTs.
I will try that. Thanks.Well, I've tried all the suggestions and still cannot completely defrag my C drive. I tried Diskeeper and O&O both both programs failed to completely install themselves. I must assume that my C drive cannot be fully defraged.. I still have 12.28 GB fragmented files that stay fragmented. Still my computer tells me that the system should be defraged. Any thoughts? Thanks to all who responded.If you look under details after defrag you should be able to see the files that weren't defragged.
Defrag in safe mode with nothing running at all.
Also turn off screensavers & power saving options etc.
Turn off antivirus stuff too.
I believe defrag can have a problem if the disk is too full but I haven't EXPERIENCED it yet.I would guess that you do have a virus somewhere in that folder. Try a couple of on-line scans from Panda and Housecall and seee if they find anything.
If you are using Norton make sure that there are no file excluded from scanning on the file exclusions page.Just wondering about free-space in general. So try this and see if it helps:
"Run Disk Cleanup and remove all but the last restore point. See if your System Restore cache and Recycle Bin size is set at a reasonable level (Say 1024Mb) on each drive, and reduce the IE Temporary Internet Files cache and History cache to the MINIMUM. Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files. Unhide all files and folders and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and remove their entries from Add-Remove programs. Then remove the contents of:
The C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder
The C: WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder
The C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder
The C:\Windows\pchealth\Datacoll folder, and...
The C:\Windows\Prefetch folder
(You can add these folders to EmpTemp if you have this program installed.) Then run chkdsk and defrag."
Answer»
Hello All,
My computer has GONE hay wire and I am sick of trying to FIGURE it out.  I have resigned mysel to reinstalling the OS and giving myself a new start.  Please don't ask what the problem is because I don't want to waste your time by trying to trouble shoot.  But believe me I have tried EVERYTHING that this forum has offered and I appreciate all the help.  Thanks to all the suggestions.
Bac to the question at hand how do i get rid of my current OS and reinstall a new one.  I have a Dell computer and its  OS reinstall disk.  It is Windows XP.
Much appreciation for all your guidance.
Sincerely,
Resigned to start a new.
This may be just what the doctor ordered:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
Unless, of course, you want to reformat the hard drive (which will lose all your data) and do a clean installation.  If you do this, however, you will have to reinstall all your programs. The instructions are here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/honeycutt_02october07.mspx
Regards,
DocDo you have a DELL handbook? I would just disconnect the MODEM from the internet (to prevent a virus arriving before you can install the anti-virus PROGRAM), put the DELL recovery CD in the CD-ROM drive and let it autorun, then follow the instructions on this page. (Home and Pro follow the same installation procedure.
I advise you to download, install and apply the following programs:
Solve : Fuzzy screen PLEASE HELP?
Answer»
Any suggestions as to why this is happening? Look at attached picture
[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Unplug all power and remove and re-seat your vid card...You just saved my life!  Good NEWS...
We love success stories here...and Welcome to CH !So it worked for a couple days and now the fuzzy screen is back...any other suggestions you may have?  I tried reseating the video card again...works fine then it comes back.Is anything pulling on the video cable?
And/or is there another video SLOT available ? ?nothing is pulling on the cable and I dont have another slot...here's the big picture.  I have a room of 27 COMPUTERS and they are all doing this...it's like a disease.  Once one COMPUTER gets the fuzzies then eventually they all get it.  Some computers are definitely worse then others.  Once I reseat the video it works for maybe a day or so and then its back better then ever!If you have 27 computers all doing the same thing at the same time, it sure sounds like a power issue.  With that many computers, it would be worth the investment in a sophisticated power monitoring unit that monitors both voltage and hertz.Electromagnetic interference
Don't have enough information to locate the source.
I can only assume this is in a computing center of some sort.  Most likely a power issue of some sort as "rthompson80819" has pointed out.I suspect the vid card is dying a slow death...
Replace it.. Quote from: patio on March 04, 2011, 06:10:16 PM
I suspect the vid card is dying a slow death...
Replace it..
On 27 different computers all exhibiting the same SYMPTOMS?where would I even start if its a power source?  yes all 27 computers have the same issue, some are worse then others though... You'll have to hire a consulting engineer who specializes in that sort of thing.  Google "data center power consulting".Can you move one of the systems out of that room and put it in another room to see if it does the same thing?  Trying to see if it is the room the computers are in or the building.
Do you have battery backups for the systems and are they far enough away.  We had some that played *censored* with the systems if they were to close to the monitors or computers.
