i have a compaq presiario 5080US.  keeps freezing up, went through the list of apps running....seems to freeze up at random.  checked mem its ok but replaced it. changed cables to hard drive. checked hd its ok but replaced it also.  changed the battery.  still no go, still keeps freezing up.  changed video card, still freezes up.  now only other options i can think of is either cpu problem or motherboard problem.  try to run pc doctor and it freezes up.  cant seem to run any kind of diagnostic tool. i'm running win me.  if anyone has any suggestions i would be very thankful.Don't know but have you checked TEMPS of cpu etc?run a scan for trojans /worm etc.........How much ram have you got?? take your pick>>>>>>http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads7.html

This diagnostic programs.....pretty good.>http://www.active-hardware.com/english/misc/sandra.htmlyes i have checked the temps and even changed the fan to a new one with ball bearings and a EXTRA cooling fan on bottom of case.  as far as virus no, i have replaced the hard drive with a new one and reloaded the os.  still freezes up and will not even allow me to run a diagnostics test on it.  no anti-virus is installed.what ram have you got???are they mismatched......i have 128MB ram.  intel celeron 800mhz processor with a 20.gb hd.  running windows me.  wouldnt think they was mismatched, i wouldnt know how to tell.  would be very thankful if u could walk me through the process of checking it out though.    forget the mismatched theory......you have only one stick.....128.........did you do any of these

no, did not do a scan.  this is all new hd.  wouldnt have any virus's would it?  no anti-virus software is installed.  nortons or otherwise.  has it been conected to the net......with this new hard drive....??www.majorgeeeks.com.........anti-virus personal edition........free......run it...and download adaware and run that also....run them in safe mode......and disconnect it from the net........for a CLEAN scan.

Footnote:and while you act downloading.....get sygate firewall p.eno its not been on the net.  cant run it long enough to do anything much without it freezing up.  open a solitaire game and it freezes.  open windows media it freezes. open control panel it freezes.  ect ect.  did a ctl+alt+del and closed all apps except explorer and systray and as soon as i open notepad, game, windows media player, ect...it will freeze up on me.ok........boot it up hold down the f8 key now  go to the the msdos prompt C:\> windows   now after it.......type scandisk  /all..........or scanreg/fix......or scanreg/restore.........you may have a damaged/corupt driver or FILE.......give it a wirl.........and i wonder is this hard drive maxtor!hmmm ok, tried booting it to safe mode a few times.  always stops at logonscreen and thats it.  freezes up.  this computer has my brain bugged big time.  as far as hd goes its the replacement hd made for that computer, i ordered it straight from hp/compaq.  seagate u series 5.ok went ahead and replaced the motherboard.  works fine now.  guess the old mb was bad, because i've had it on for 4 hours now and not one freeze up.  reloaded the os and everything without a glitch.  thanks all for all you help, special thanks to u merlin for trying.   Now would be a good time to move on from ME.
