Solve : i have lost my user name on start up? |
Answer» No very happy this morning and need help badly. I don't know what happened but I have lost my user name on the start up menu. All I have is the message "to begin click your user name"--but I have no user names. I am unable to access a desktop. I hope the single account on the computer wasn't lost, but I am really at a loss as to what is going on. Is there any way to get to a desktop from here so that I can SEE if the user account was deleted? ctrl/alt/del just brings up a log in box, user name and password, but those only bring up an error message. I am RUNNING Windows XP. |

Solve : Old files still there, just can't get to em.? |
Answer» My computer is a Presario, about 5 years old, supposedly 100 GB hard drive, I have 2 GB ram, Windows XP Home edition, service PACK 3 installed, What is Antivirus 2010? -PCWorld.Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 16, 2011, 06:56:52 PM Kinda figured that.Yes.. In the next scenario, a free offer to try Antivirus 2010 remover tool .. money back if ita dona worka. Ita dona work and you dona get your money.. and in the next senario.... Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 16, 2011, 08:33:27 PM Yes.. Thanks Geek, at least you took the time to provide some 'slap stick' in lieu of, or lack of, any useful advise. I was impressed enough to even check out your blog, in case there might be some useful advice there.....there was: "...We have been getting a lot of Span and this puts a burden on the webmaster. Me...". I hadn't realized that there was a lot of 'span' out there. There was another interesting piece, but I do need clarification: "..Although you may not ti k so, internet criminals can do HARM..". Is 'ti k' a blogger term for 'think'? Anyway, good stuff, and I'll be sure to add another 'thank you' to your list. I can certainly see why your level of professionalism is valued here. And if you could post an emoticon of some Keystone Cops in your next reply, it would be greatly appreciated. Quote an Avira alert came up while online, as usual, it defaulted to the ‘deny access’ option, which I did. This jumps out at me as the cause of lack of access... I don't run Avira so i would check the Help files and Tutorials to find where the access CONTROLS are. Have a Look... Quote from: kerk on April 17, 2011, 05:57:57 AM Thanks Geek, at least you took the time to provide some 'slap stick' in lieu of, or lack of, any useful advise. Ol' Geek alleges that he can't type very well, or has dyslexia, or something like that, so when he posts on here he uses a microphone and a speech-to-text program (he says). Whatever, his posts frequently give rise to bafflement of varying degrees. He does not appear to apply any proof reading before hitting the "post" button. Possibly this is allied to a reading difficulty or maybe it would be too laborious to verbally correct the things his computer doesn't hear properly. At any rate, he does give good advice from time to time. He is a frequent poster on here, and he is pretty well regarded - he is a good natured soul and seldom posts anything cruel or cutting, so although I understand your reaction, maybe turning down the sarcasm dial a bit might be in order? Of course, you are perfectly free to disregard the previous suggestion, since I am hardly the best example to follow, but then I have been here a bit longer than you have. Quote from: patio on April 17, 2011, 06:05:26 AM This jumps out at me as the cause of lack of access... Whew! Thanks Patio, that kinda got my head spinning. I guess I'll put that on the back burner for now, although it may very well move to the front burner in a couple days.START DICTATION. Thank you very much Mr. Salmon Trout. Begin rant. To the OP. Sometimes I use the speech recognition when I want to say something that takes more than a few lines. Not to get to the point, here are some useful information about what to do when your Windows operating system has been terribly compromised. The short answer is: use a Linux live CD to fix Windows. Now the details. Of course, Linux does not fix Windows. However, a Linux live CD can easily read Windows partitions and copy files to another media such as a USB drive or even a DVD RW. Once you have a suitable backup of the essential data and settings that you need, do a full installation of your Windows operating system. Including the process of completely wiping out the drive you're going to use as the system drive. So there, now I have included some useful information. In many cases what I have described is the best, and possibly, the only choice. End of rant. Mistakes above are the from the near deaf computer. MICROPHONE OFF Boy....it's certainly getting touchy in here now.... Calm down. Since you've discovered you somehow got infected, my suggestion would be to finish running through the guide and post the appropriate logs in the Spyware and Viruses forum. I'd echo Patio's advice to check the appropriate "access controls" but chances are your access is being denied by the AV 2010 thing you somehow acquired. Naturally you can ignore Geek-9pm's visions of a universe where a Linux live CD can disinfect a Windows installation easily. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 18, 2011, 06:46:53 AM Since you've discovered you somehow got infected, my suggestion would be to finish running through the guide and post the appropriate logs in the Spyware and Viruses forum. Along with the logs, should I repost my OP from this thread, over there? Quote from: kerk on April 18, 2011, 12:17:20 PM Will do, BC. Along with the logs, should I repost my OP from this thread, over there? I'd say so, it might provide them with some info on your current "state of affairs" (what works and what doesn't, etc). |

Solve : Constant "program not responding" message, HELP Please? |
Answer» Hello all, I've been around a while and usually I can figure this stuff out myself but this problem has me stumped. IE won't openHave you tried running it without add-ons or reinstalling it? If you are keeping an ESET installer software, I would completely uninstall it and try using another free antivirus(Avira or Avast) to troubleshoot the problem. It could run from software to hardware problem or programs conflicting or corrupted. You could also ran diagnostic test for you HD and RAM or use one RAM module for testing.I had a similar problem, on XP using IE, How I first noticed was my desktop shortcuts wouldn't open programs then using Start/All Programs that once I clicked on any prog or accessory that it wouldnt open (including Sys Recovery and SysInf, any application repair) and the icons would turn white. Then I couldnt DL anything, would go to 98% then box says DL failed. If this is anything like problems you are having you try to open a program in folders a box says open with: choice of programs on your comp or ask if web help will open it. And web help page opens same window everytime where no links can be DL'd) Neither works. when I started looking in my folders, all my .exe .dll .ini .bat any Media Device App icons would be white and say in properties Unknown Application and trying to open it, it would say something about it has no file association, meaning it couldnt be opened by any device or driver. IF you see those desktop icons, all the icons in all programs changing to the white icons, the icons in Control Panel stay same icon, but dont open a 2nd time. and nothing Downloads. It's already too late, UNLESS your task manager will open. then maybe you can associate each device with its program path. But if it opens, Do not close it, any program you can open, dont close it till you've DONE all you could with it. I had roundabout ways to open Media Players, they can only be opened by having a song or vid "Open with" your player. I saw so many people describe these symptoms on help sites and every tech gave bad advice, if you cant open or DL anything they'd say DL this or Run this Virus removal, or Malicious software remover. I hope you dont have it. Only difference is my IE still worked just fine. I did get a Dl of a virus scan to scan and print out results. Called Panda Active Scan, the scan is free and thorough. I have Trojan Virus at 2 or 3 locations, all the executional devices had a virus caledl Adware Virus. The 68 threats and problems were printed on 5 pages. Its a free scan, the removal tool you pay for, but that cant be completely downloaded either, the scan wasnt either. I dont know if is virus you have, but check the signs of white icons, if it starts, disconnect from your modem, you were hijacked. Make sure you use different name for Administrator. Your only chance is offline, Hope you have made back ups or have XP disk, they STOPPED selling. If not, you can save personal files onto disks, then with disk, Full Recovery. Quote from: Allan on April 11, 2011, 05:56:31 AM What happens in safe mode? I'm still working on this. It wont even open FF or IE in regular mode anymore. BUT, in safe mode, which is what I'm in now, everything works perfect. (safemode with networking). So, it must be a driver or program that is loading at startup that is causing this mess. What do you guys think? No one knows huh? Par for the course, no big deal I'll figure the [language edited by Allan]out like I always do. This is a weekend. Most people don't spend as much time on the forums on Sundays as we do during the week. I'm sorry you're not happy with our service. Personally, I'm not happy with your last post - either the language or the attitude. Quote from: jason2074 on April 10, 2011, 12:00:54 AM 1.Did it work before with the current softwares installed or anything added that causes the issue?Quote from: donscool on April 14, 2011, 06:37:42 AM I had a similar problem, on XP using IE, How I first noticed was my desktop shortcuts wouldn't open programs then using Start/All Programs that once I clicked on any prog or accessory that it wouldnt open (including Sys Recovery and SysInf, any application repair) and the icons would turn white. Yeah well I'm not happy with these 1st grade responses. I gave details on what I attempted and the symptoms yet the first guy repeats what I said. The second guy is spamming the site. This is what I'm saying about people who have some kind of degree's in pc's or similar, they know the garbage they teach in the books but don't have a clue about real issues128 views and NO ONE has any legit suggestions, unbelievableI'd suggest another Help Forum then.... Best of Luck with your issue. Topic Closed. When you are ready to act like someone who is asking for help rather than the way you have in your last two posts just let us know and I'll be happy to suggest the next troubleshooting steps for you. People who offer help on this site do so out of the goodness of their hearts - they don't get paid for helping ingrates like you. If you don't like an answer on a support forum you are supposed to ignore it, not berate someone who is doing his best to assist, even if that "best" isn't good enough for you. |

Solve : Display Theme? |
Answer» WinXP You mean desktop background and browse for jpeg files? You could always use the Appearance tab, Advanced to change certain colors or fonts. Some changes may affect certain programs. THAT'S where it is - I knew it was somewhere. Thanks. Out of curiosity, what does the Theme tab do? The drop-down has a "browse" selection that lets you go to My Pictures, but you can't see the JPEG files. Is that normal?Themes change the whole appearance....background image; menu bars; sound ASSIGNMENTS; mouse pointers etc. You may have none yet if it shows empty...what OS ? ? Quote from: patio on April 16, 2011, 07:00:27 AM Themes change the whole appearance....background image; menu bars; sound assignments; mouse pointers etc. WinXP. There are quite a few themes listed in the drop-down. You also have an OPTION to look for more themes on-line and browse. Looks to me that Themes and Desktop Background are the same thing.Their not... Quote from: patio on April 16, 2011, 07:31:34 AM Their not... Got it. Thanks. |

Solve : User groups? |
Answer» Ok... My computer seems to have come from *censored*, and is posessed... There are some tools out there like Tweak XP ETC that can hide certain adminsitrative / important features under XP. You might want to learn more about Windows XP policy settings. You can do a lot there. If your users are not too handy with PC's then set the NTFS rights on the Administrative tools folder to Administrator only. There is a lot you can do to make a PC idiot proof and still play new games. look for Policies, Policy tools. click start->run and type MMC Add a new snap-in called Security analysis. (study before blindly doing) and change the out-of-box status to more secure etc. Hope I steered you in the right directionMy users are not handy with pc. 'If your users are not too handy with PC's then set the NTFS rights on the Administrative tools folder to Administrator only.' How do I do this, im no pc expert either. Thanks :-/ |

Solve : Need help to turn audio back on.? |
Answer» I recent bought a new PC, with Windows 7. I gave my old PC (still in great shape), with Windows XP Professional, to a friend who lives 200 miles away. What about music CDs? Can he hear sound from those? Bingo! You're the man! I got in touch with my friend this morning, and had him put an audio CD in the DISC burner/player. A window opened on the screen asking him if he wanted to play the CD using Windows Media Player. I immediately had him click on it, and the CD audio filled the room. I then had him remove the CD and go to a youtube sight with audio. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxvgM9zQc7c The sound of my daughter's ukulele band, "Tiny Tim Overdrive", then filled the room. It's interesting. That's all it took to get the audio working. Thanks once again. |

Solve : Extract/List data recorded on DOS log file? |

Answer» Hi, we are running a program(MHDD) on DOS and it is supposed to have record hard disk volume headers and other program run details in a log file. I am trying to search for a utility program that can either extract and reformat the data from the log file WHEREUPON I can use Query to print OR a utility program that can just print out the data from the log file. It would be nice to have a utility that list out the fields from the log such that it makes sense and not just hex representation. Does such a utiliity program exists? Solve : Help in writting a batch file!? |
Answer» I had a virus (I've since removed) that went in and changed the attributes for all my .flv "movie video " FILES to hidden! The files are in folders, and I am able to go to "cmd", and with the HELP of a small BATCH file, change the attribs back to -h. Each sub-directory file has a different name, so this is taking a long time. The names are like SUN03_1 , THUR23_2, etc. I want to go to a directory and administer to each sub-directory!Ever try to use the SEARCH function? Use the WinKey+F to open it, then select "All Files and Folders." Look down to the "More Advanced Options" drop menu and change the attributes of the search so it finds hidden folders. I'm pretty sure that you'll find them, without a batch file. |

Solve : SVCHOST.EXE-- why 7 running at once???? |
Answer» XP home, browsing the ctrl+alt+del (wtm) PAGE and I COUNT 7 SVCHOST.exe RUNNING simultaneously.... 4 under system, 1 under local service, and 2 under network service... i have DSL t1 thru AllTel... this cant be normal.. is it normal? virus check programs seem to think its normal. anybody else find this "7 svchost.exe" thing a bit fishY??? thanxActually svchost.exe is a program that will LAUNCH other programs as a service. That you have multiple sessions is not a cause for alarm. If you want to be sure. Try using microsoft anti-spyware TOOL. The MS tool somewhat explains running services or at least FINDS the program using it. There are tools to monitor / trace or explain the complete services. Pprocexp.exe from Sysinternals does the job fine! |

Solve : Is it possible to connect an Acer Aspire One to a touch screen monitor?? |
Answer» I have been SEARCHING, and searching, and I can't FIND a direct answer to my question. My Acer Aspire One has a TINY screen and I heard you can connect a larger monitor. I thought that I might as well attach a touch screen monitor, 22", but I'm not sure if the touch screen will WORK in the first place. It depends on the screen. I'm guessing your laptop had VGA output (that's what their website says) so you'll want a monitor with input for that (although you can likely get an adapter if it doesn't). |

Answer» It is said that Linux OS has no danger from viruses because it is virus proof. Is it true? If yes, why? And then why not Microsoft Windows? The main reason why these computer viruses caused so much damage world-wide was because most people were not aware of such threats and were not protected against them.Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 25, 2011, 05:34:09 PM Stuff That has nothing to do with Linux. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 25, 2011, 05:57:05 PM That has nothing to do with Linux. Therefore it can not have a virus. ---------------------------------------------------- Quote What Is Linux: An Overview of the Linux Operating System | Linux.comQuote Linux is, in simplest terms, an operating system. It is the software on a computer that enables applications and the computer operator to access the devices on the computer to perform desired functions. This is plain wrong. I mean, yes, if somebody says "I run linux" it's clear they mean that they run an Operating System that uses the Linux kernel, but Linus didn't make XFCE/Gnome/etc; just the kernel. Although I think calling it "GNU/Linux" would be equally stupid because not all free software used on Linux systems are GNU. Linux is the Kernel; the rest is other free software; for example, the DESKTOP environments aren't "linux"; for the most part they work equally well on other kernels. Quote Therefore it can not have a virus.here's an idea, stop making stupid assertions and or drawing out arguments I never made to argue against. I never said Linux-based systems c ouldn't have a virus. Of course they can. *censored*, if you ask me they are more susceptible than windows, merely because of the fact that there are so many different people working on various Open Source projects and they aren't all necessarily audited properly for things like buffer overflows which can easily allow any user to simply become the root user with a single command. Of course, the thing is, the problem in that case has absolutely nothing to do with Linux based Operating systems and everything to do with the fact that C is for some reason still a preferred language, despite the fact that it practically works against the creation of "secure" code. ("secure" in the context of exploitation). In any case,No operating System is immune from viruses. a virus is pretty much just a program that attempts to promulgate itself through either the network (worm) or by copying itself into memory and then copying itself to removable media and then infecting other machines through that media. Two things prevent virus makers from bothering with either a Linux or even in many cases a Mac virus: -the vast majority of computer users run Windows. Fact. -most Linux users are more computer savvy then the average user. So if you had to choose from developing a piece of malware that could run on hundreds of millions of machines of which a large majority were technical sycophants who will believe any messages you put up claiming to be "from the system", or a few hundred thousand machines whose users were smart enough to know you and anyone who looks like you were a scumbag, which would you choose? It's pretty obvious. And if you've ever had to use XCode you know why nobody bothers to write Mac viruses. *censored* I'm convinced the vast majority of people who use xcode only do so because they are paid, likely by companies trying to get some OFFSHOOT application on the app store. I used it once and it was like I went through a time warp where compiler and IDE technology had REGRESSED to the state of Turbo Pascal 2.Mostly I would agree, BC. Windows is the big target. Apple has a tight ship. Linux users are savy. But Linux is called an Operating System by common usage. Quote ...the most popular six are: It is like asking for a '"Banana Split" in an ice cream parlor. They will understand that the split banana is the kernel and add in your flavor of ice cream to make it an operational ice-cram delivery system. In popular usage, Linux is a system for a computer, Like Banana Split is a system for a ice cream dish. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 25, 2011, 10:09:53 PM But Linux is called an Operating System by common usage. No. Just because a lot of people decide on a de facto naming convention doesn't make it de jure. A lot of people call the taskbar area called the Notification Area the "System Tray" but just because a lot of people are ignorant to what it is really called doesn't suddenly mean that their mistakes rectify their own ignorance.Looks like we are off topic again. So, before the moderator yanks us... Quote GNU/Linux naming controversy[1] http://www.gnu.org/gnu/linux-and-gnu.html So, will you be happy if I call it the GNU/Linux OS? Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 25, 2011, 11:26:10 PM So, will you be happy if I call it the GNU/Linux OS?I just had a brilliant idea; how about, before responding to a post or posts, you read them? Quote from: rsubax72 on April 25, 2011, 04:32:25 PM It is said that Linux OS has no danger from viruses because it is virus proof. Is it true? If yes, why? And then why not Microsoft Windows? It's possible to get a virus on Linux but since 99%+ of people are on Windows or Mac why would someone bother to write a virus that 99% of computers are immune to? Possible? Yes. Likely? A little more so than aliens attacking. Here an old article written in 2004. post.Judge for yourself if his argument makes sense today. Quote Security Report: Windows vs LinuxQuote from: Geek-9pm on April 27, 2011, 12:03:34 AM Here an old article written in 2004. post.Judge for yourself if his argument makes sense today. It probably wasn't even right in 2004. "In 2000, Windows comprised about half of the server operating system market, followed by Unix and Netware at about 17 percent each and Linux reaching towards 10 percent, she said, noting that today Windows owns about 70 percent, Linux about 20 percent, with Unix below 10 percent and Netware BARELY registering. " from http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Linux-and-Open-Source/Linux-Losing-Market-Share-to-Windows-Server/ Viruses and malware are more prevalent on windows for the very reason he argues against- because malicious crackers tend to confine their activities to breaking into the software with the largest installed base. So, you ask. What about Apache and Linux servers? that's a moot point, because web server's aren't used to browse the web and download software. And the person administering generally knows what they are doing. The only downloads they would probably make would be software updates which themselves have well documented hashes that can be compared to ensure it is untampered. Crackers break into web servers- of course they do. But they use exploits to gain access to the machine, not viruses or malware, once they've taken control of the machine, then they might place a rootkit and some of their own files in a hidden location, to run whatever software they want, not likely to have the server owner's best interests in mind. However, Viruses, Malware, and spyware are almost completely a problem on client machines, not servers. Server's need to be more concerned about patching exploits to prevent being "owned"; viruses and malware are useless to somebody seeking to take over a web server. How the *censored* could you use a malicious piece of software, regardless of the OS of the server, to take control? Unless the system is bad configured to begin with, you simply aren't going to be able to run arbitrary code on the server to begin with, so Viruses and malware are a no go. Viruses and malware are written for client machines, not servers. You aren't going to be able to trick somebody into purchasing scam software by popping up dialog's on a server. |

Solve : Icon for *.pwn files resets to "unknown" while keeping the file associations? |
Answer» Well, whenever i set the icon to represent files with the EXTENSION .pwn, it lasts for minutes or maybe hours, but it RESETS itself after some TIME.. it lasts for minutes or maybe hours, but it resets itself after some time.. Do you log off or restart during that time period? It is possible that malware is resetting the file associations? it occasionally will do that.As there is no reason to log out, I never do And there is only 1 account made (Not counting the premade "Administrator") And the screensaver doesn't log out the current user + I'm automaticly logged in on startup Malware?, Hmm, that could be the reason, haven't RUN any scans lately - Will run some scans soon & report back hereWell, seems to work now, so i believe it's solvedNope, still having the problem... Any suggestions? |

Solve : Cd/DVD drive just rattles but doesnt play? |
Answer» I have a compaq presario v2000. Problem is the CD/DVD drive doesnt seem to want to work. I put in a cd, but nothing happens, the light on the cd drive goes on like it trying to read but then the light goes off after a while and thats the end of story. I go to the device manager and the driver is listed. I go to my computer and I see the cd/dvd drive. So why is it not playing 6 + year old laptop...probably a dead drive.Ditto.bit if the drive were dead , then shouldnt the light on the drive not shine and also the disk that is put in not spin. What about say refreshing the CD driver/firmware or uninstalling the device from device manage and then scanning for hardware CHANGES. Could that possibly bring it to life Quote bit if the drive were dead , then shouldnt the light on the drive not shine and also the disk that is put in not spin? A lot of dead or failing optical drives will display or act to such behavior as in trying to read certain CDs but unable either the LENS is worn out or requires certain timing due to mechanical(gear) misalign. Such examples are on CD or DVD players. You could try your own FIXTURE to this problem as the way you see it possible. The same is happening to me and hi think its probably the lens that died...tried every thing , firmware update , switching jumper config (cause hi have another) nothing worked have to buy a new one. IF someone have any better idea ?help please Quote from: pauloXjorge on April 27, 2011, 03:54:11 PM The same is happening to me and hi think its probably the lens that died...tried every thing , firmware update , switching jumper config (cause hi have another) nothing worked have to buy a new one. If the interior lights, headlights, heater, and air circulation in a car works, you cannot conclude that the entire car is fully functional. My Toshiba Satellite 440CDX's CD-ROM drive performs similarly. Could that possibly bring it to life The motor may spin the disk & the light may shine but if a read or write laser (or both) has failed or the associated ELECTRONICS or the drive control electronics, then its a dead drive. Not every dead piece of hardware can be revived with geek magic. |

Solve : using or moving music files causes my pc to lock up? |
Answer» AMD Athlon 64 4000+ nVidia GeForce 6100 894 MB RAM this screen lock problem has been happening for a few months and i finally had the money to order a case for my other hard DRIVE to backup all files and format my drive to reinstall windows and hopefully fix this issue, but it happened about four times in the process of trying to backup my files and then has continued to happen after the fresh format! it just seems to me that every time i want to access my music files or do more than one thing at a time it just locks up and i have to manually power down and restart it. [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Without 'mo details, only some guesswork can be given. How old is the system? Is it home-built? Have you had problems before now? Do you have another RAM set you can use? Will it run on just 256MB of RAM? Do you have odd-ball USB devices? Like cheap ones the don't conform to specs. Unplug them Do you have wireless mouse or keyboard? Some can lock a PC. Is your power supply OK? Are you using two CD drives? Does you CPU get very hot? Do you overclock? Can it run with another video card or built-in video? The system was purchased as a package four years ago and hasn't given me much trouble until lately, but now that I think of it they started happening around when I installed the second cd drive. Also, the CPU runs at about 135f and I just stripped the inside and dusted the *censored* out of it. I have a set of 1g ram chips coming Monday as well, so I was hoping that would help. I will try to disconnect the second cd drive for now.I have updated my RAM to 2.9G and disconnected the second disc drive to no avail. it literally freezes while COMPLETELY Idle. the only information i have found that could be the problem is the power supply, and i think mine is a little dusty. so, if anyone has another idea of what it could be or additional system tests i could run i would greatly appreciate it!1.Have you tried safemode? 2.On what partition of the HD are your music files located or being accessed? 3.You also could try re-applying thermal paste for your processor. 4. Quote Can it run with another video card or built-in video?Try reinstalling sound or video drivers and swap test HD cable connection. 5. How much used and free space is available? 6. Check BIOS settings and try disabling caching/shadowing if available. If you use XP, disable also IDE HDD Block Mode. Save and Exit. first off, what can i do in safe mode? just run there all the time? let me give the full run down so maybe we can get to the bottom of this. the problem first occurred about six months ago, but it was only when i would use my Zune player with my computer transferring files or just the zune software listening to music and it would only happen occasionally. after a while it started happening if i was doing almost anything with my music files, including burning cds. once it got to the point where i needed help here it was happening about five to ten minutes after i turned on the pc. i started to try an repair the problem by cleaning the dust from the comp and checking all the CONNECTIONS, then i transferred all of my important files to an external hard drive and did a complete format and reinstall of windows xp on the system. once that was complete i then added 2 gigs of ram and unplugged the second cdrom drive. today i replaced the thermal paste on the cpu and graphics card, and completely disassembled the innards of the pc and dusted the crap out of it all, making sure to look at all connections and check for any discoloration or SWOLLEN capacitors, and also for any obvious signs there was a problem with all components, which there weren't. now, i turn it on, try to run a few programs and get her going, play three songs through my zune software and we're back to square one with a lego screen. and when i turned it back on to check the temps in the bios menu the *censored* thing froze again!! the temp on the pcu was only 47c too! so maybe someone could give me a better solution BC i really despise computer repair establishments.Since it happens only upon using the Zune player(which I honestly never used) which makes your PC to freeze, could there be a relationship between the transferring of files to other media storage or vice-versa or settings that need to change or sync. Have you look for default settings or changes needed online for the zune software? |

Solve : can't boot windows? |
Answer» RECENTLY I crashed my hard drive. Ended up reformatting and REINSTALLING NT. After several days of everything working, I started my COMPUTER and got the following message: "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information." Does anyone have any advise for me?TRY examining / correcting the boot.ini. Perhaps this does not point to the booting partition. (Boot from CD and select the option for command tools / dos box so to speak. Rebuild the boot.ini from the help tools available. Could also rebuild the boot sector etc. Examine the disk status with a bootable ERD CD (Emergency Repair Disk - Winternals) Try to determin if the disk is unstable or that a disk crash is imininent. Enable SMART features if you have any. If you are using mutiple drives. Try unattaching them and boot the primary disk. All in All, sounds like the HD is going to DIE on you.. |

Solve : Can .bat Files Execute Button Commands?? |
Answer» I was wondering if it was possible to execute button commands in a batch file. For example Alt+ENTER.Only way to interface with buttons etc would be to use another keyboard/mouse macro that specificially CLICKS on an x,y location of the screen that is executable from the command prompt by which a batch file could use the start command to trigger the button command. I use this product for my automation needs: http://www.jitbit.com/macro-recorder/ This software works great and you can compile your automation routine as a stand alone exe to do anything you want. Quote Only way to interface with buttons etc would be to use another macro that specificially clicks on an x,y location of the screen that is executable from the command prompt by which a batch file could use the start command to trigger the button command. I think the OP was referring to buttons pressed on the keyboard. Quote For example Alt+Enter. If that's the CASE. It only works in vbscript. Here is how you could do it. Copy and paste into notepad and save as .vbs Code: [Select]SET ws = CreateObject("WScript.Shell") ws.SendKeys "%{ENTER}" Set ws = Nothing Now you call it from a batch file: Code: [Select]echo off wscript /nologo whatever.vbs If you are trying to send ALT + ENTER to the command prompt in order to full screen it, it won't work. It's a Microsoft bug. It will work for any other program though. If you need to maximize the command prompt inside batch, there is a way. Just post back if that's what you are trying to do.I was thinking that they were referring to a button in a GUI environment in which a button alt+enter event would be contained to only happening within the batched command shell itself when if its to control something outside the batch I cant see any way of doing it without the way that I suggested or other similar method of a keyboard/mouse macro. Quote button alt+enter event would be contained to only happening within the batched command shell itself when if its to control something outside the batch The method I posted should be able to control other PROGRAMS after they are started from the batch.Cool... so based on the window focus then after starting them with START within batch so the batch shell window is then not the focus.. Interesting!Right, it wouldn't be the focus because they are trying to send keys to the other program. I interpreted the question that they were looking for a way to use sendkeys in batch. |

Solve : Sending http address in emails? |
Answer» I have a webspace allocated to me by my ISP. It now has several folders in which I have images and text PAGES. When I want to send someone the http of a page in one of my folders can I somehow prevent them from seeing the index containing all of the folders - and being able to open them. This they can do by delteing the http back to the base address and seeing the site index. He's providing hyperlinks in the emails which link to photos located on ISP's servers Personal Web Space. Could be Comcast, I have it, I've tried it. Is it better than actually sending the photos? Makes the email file size smaller. OK...so your saying by cliking the link and backspacing he can access personal folders / / /That's correct patioThanks Salmon Trout - the link to plusnet is very helpful. I should have looked on the ISP forum first. Thanks to all who contributed to my topic. |
