Solve : i have lost my user name on start up?

Answer»

No very happy this morning and need help badly.  I don't know what happened but I have lost my user name on the start up menu.  All I have is the message "to begin click your user name"--but I have no user names.  I am unable to access a desktop.  I hope the single account on the computer wasn't lost, but I am really at a loss as to what is going on.  Is there any way to get to a desktop from here so that I can SEE if the user account was deleted?  ctrl/alt/del just brings up a log in box, user name and password, but those only bring up an error message.  I am RUNNING Windows XP.

Is there any way to get into the registry EXCEPT from a desktop "run" so that I can check to see if the missing account was deleted?
Follow these steps to create a new user name:

1. Before loading Windows, press F8
2. Choose safe mode
3. Select the ADMINISTRATOR account (Hidden when not using safe mode)

Safe mode will now be loaded and you will have administrator privileges

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Account
5. Create a new account with administrator capabilities

Once done, do the following:

1. Scan for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware
2. Download latest Microsoft Windows XP [SP2] security updates.i have tried this and still do not get any user accounts to come up.  The "missing" account was listed as the administrator.thats you......did you enter a password when you INSTALLED the system......as a single user there is no need to log on.....i dont? maybe someone did this

Start/Run/gpedit.msc

User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Start Menu and Taskbar/Remove User Name from the Start Menu.

Solve : Help Needed: Computer Periodically Re-starting?

Answer»

This computer had been running fine up until two days ago. Two days ago, it restarted by itself in the early afternoon. About 30 minutes later, it did it again. About 2 hours later it did it a third time. Yesterday, it restarted once in the morning and once in the afternoon.  I went to be about 2AM last night and sometime between then and when I went to use it this morning (9AM) it had restarted.

This is a desktop computer. Two days ago, after the third restart, I opened the case and man was it dusty in there. So I thought it was an overheating issue. I cleaned most of the dust out as well as I COULD and when I finished, it looked a LOT cleaner. I hoped that would solve the issue, but it obviously did not.

This is definitely an abrupt restart issue. I have been at the computer when restarts have occurred. And when the computer boots back up each time, I receive a message that "The system has recovered from a serious error."  It is not, for example due to Microsoft Update restarting my computer after an update. In fact, I have automatic updates disabled.

Interestingly, in my computer "startup and recovery" properties I have the box labeled "Automatically Restart" unchecked. So windows should not be restarting my computer when a software error occurs. Another reason I suspected overheating.

The "serious error" message has a link to get more info, which tells me this "error signature"

BCCode : 9c     BCP1 : 00000000     BCP2 : 8054E170     BCP3 : B2000000
BCP4 : 1040080F     OSVer : 5_1_2600     SP : 3_0     Product : 256_1

And tells me more info can be found here:

C:\DOCUME~1\Kent\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERdb19.dir00\Mini040811-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Kent\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERdb19.dir00\sysdata.xml

I have googled how to read .dmp files, but have not been able to successfully do so yet.

The sysdata.xml file is copied at the bottom of this message.

In case it was a software issue, I attempted to restore to a point nearly two weeks ago, but the restore "failed" because it reported that no changes had been made since then. Which is true, no new software has been installed or settings changed in a couple of weeks.

I am getting into speculation here, but each time the computer has restarted, iTunes has pretty MUCH been the only program running in the foreground. In the background, the only out-of-ordinary programs running are CrashPlan (backup software that is always running and has been running fine for longer than two days ago and is also running without issues on other computers in the house) and Ditto (a small clipboard extension program that I've run without issues forever). And sometimes Zumocast (look it up if necessary), but it has not always been running during each restart.

I am using Microsoft Security Essentials for virus protection and a scan since the crashes started happening caught no infections.

Any advice is appreciated as I troubleshoot this.  Thanks for reading this post and for any help you can try to give me.

Since I just narrowed this down, I haven't had much time to troubleshoot yet.  I'll start on that now.  But if this issue sounds familiar to anyone, feel free to jump in.

Thanks!Well, as of now, it appears that I have some problems.

I have ALWAYS been able to transfer files from this computer to an old-style external backup drive that I've had forever - basically a full size hard drive in and external enclosure that has its own AC power supply.  Now I am unable to do even that.  I just tried and the computer restarted.

So......my computer works if no external drive is plugged in.  And I have 300GB of data on the hard drive I need to back up.  At this point, I am considering upgrading the computer - full upgrade.  But I need my data backed up so I can restore it when the upgrade is finished.  I can back up to the cloud, but that will take a couple of months for 300GB.

How am I going to get this data backed up?I would find out what brand that external is and DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from the manuf. site...sounds like it's going South. To start with, borrow an identical power supply and try it.Update:  The restarts have gotten more and more frequent until I can not even boot up.  In other words, if I turn the computer on, before Windows even starts, the computer restarts. I have ordered a bevy of new parts to upgrade it, including a new PSU, but I'd like to solve this problem so I know what the problem actually was.

I went into the BIOS and reset it to "optimized defaults" based on advice given in another thread I googled.  I got booted into Windows and felt hopeful, but about 2 minutes later, it restarted.  And the same thing happens whether I am in SAFE MODE or not.

I guess I'll install the new PSU first to see if it is the problem.Well, it is not the power supply. Can you determine if it is hardware or software?
Can you boot up just a floppy with a memory test and see how long it goes?
Or  the Microsoft Memory test, which does not boot up the Windows OS. It is a stand alone program with very little overhead. If the PC reboots doing that, it must be hardware.

You can download a small ISO an d burn it to CD. God tool to have.

Solve : Old files still there, just can't get to em.?

Answer»

My computer is a Presario, about 5 years old, supposedly 100 GB hard drive, I have 2 GB ram, Windows XP Home edition, service PACK 3 installed,

A couple days ago, an Avira alert came up while online, as usual, it defaulted to the ‘deny access’ option, which I did. Another alert came up immediately after that with the same option, which I clicked. I do not recall if I closed my browser at that point, or if it closed itself, but after that happened, I had no icons (except for ‘trash bin’, ‘MS Exporer’, and ‘Firefox’, on my desktop. And going into my files from ‘My Computer’, the only folder listed on the hard drive was ‘programs’, and in that folder the only file listed was an old, disabled ‘Zone Alarm’ file.

My hard drive still shows that about 28 GB are used, and 58 GB are free when checking properties. When I use the XP search FUNCTION, it will find the folders and files, but they will appear dimmed, and when right clicking them to explore, explorer will open that folder and show it empty. So I am unable to access any existing files on my computer. Also, on my start menu, the ‘All Files’ option show completely empty, except for a couple programs that were downloaded after this occurred.

I can get online, Firefox, I.E., Thunderbird, Word, and Wordpad are accessible and functioning. I did download ‘Iobit Security 360’ from C-Net.  It did install and run, and found some threats, but the problem still exists. Any new programs downloaded are accessible, but none of my old ones are. I also downloaded ‘Ad-Aware’, but it would not install as it said it could not access ‘Visual C++ Runtime 9 Service Pack 1’.

Since this happened, I have only run in 'Safemode with networking'.

Also, I can not open ‘Avira’ to get updates, but it will scan the hard drive when told do do so through the right click menu on my hard drive. And as I watch the scan, it does go through all the old files on the drive.

It appears from reading your ‘Virus and Spyware section Guidelines’, I needed to start at ‘Step 1: Add or Remove Programs’.

In ‘Control Panel’ I found ‘Anti virus 2010’, this is the only program in control panel whose name came close to some of those listed in your list of suspicious programs.

When uninstall is attempted, a ‘Run Installation Program’ box appears and states “..An error occurred while trying to remove Antivirus 2010. You do not have access to \\globalroot\systemroot\system 32\userinit exe. You can specify the new uninstall program below..”, which gives a browse window to pick a program, but since I can’t access any programs, it will only browse the programs I have downloaded in the last couple days.

The next step is ‘Step 2: House Cleaning’, but I thought I better wait on advice first.

Antivirus 2010 will not protect you from malware. In fact, it is malware. It's a rogue program, pretending to protect you from infections while infecting your computer....

Thanks Geek, at least you took the time to provide some 'slap stick' in lieu of, or lack of, any useful advise.

I was impressed enough to even check out your blog, in case there might be some useful advice there.....there was:

"...We have been getting a lot of Span and this puts a burden on the webmaster. Me...".

I hadn't realized that there was a lot of 'span' out there.

There was another interesting piece, but I do need clarification:

"..Although you may not ti k so, internet criminals can  do HARM..".

Is 'ti k' a blogger term for 'think'?

Anyway, good stuff, and I'll be sure to add another 'thank you' to your list.  I can certainly see why your level of professionalism is valued here. And if you could post an emoticon of some Keystone Cops in your next reply, it would be greatly appreciated.

This jumps out at me as the cause of lack of access...
I don't run Avira so i would check the Help files and Tutorials to find where the access CONTROLS are.

Ol' Geek alleges that he can't type very well, or has dyslexia, or something like that, so when he posts on here he uses a microphone and a speech-to-text program (he says). Whatever, his posts frequently give rise to bafflement of varying degrees. He does not appear to apply any proof reading before hitting the "post" button. Possibly this is allied to a reading difficulty or maybe it would be too laborious to verbally correct the things his computer doesn't hear properly. At any rate, he does give good advice from time to time. He is a frequent poster on here, and he is pretty well regarded - he is a good natured soul and seldom posts anything cruel or cutting, so although I understand your reaction, maybe turning down the sarcasm dial a bit might be in order? Of course, you are perfectly free to disregard the previous suggestion, since I am hardly the best example to follow, but then I have been here a bit longer than you have.

Not to get to the point, here are some useful information about what to do when your Windows operating system has been terribly compromised. The short answer is: use a Linux live CD to fix Windows.
Now the details. Of course, Linux does not fix Windows. However, a Linux live CD can easily read Windows partitions and copy files to another media such as a USB drive or even a DVD RW.
Once you have a suitable backup of the essential data and settings that you need, do a full installation of your Windows operating system. Including the process of completely wiping out the drive you're going to use as the system drive.
So there, now I have included some useful information. In many cases what I have described is the best, and possibly, the only choice.
End of rant.
Mistakes above are the from the near deaf computer.

Boy....it's certainly getting touchy in here now....

Calm down.

Since you've discovered you somehow got infected, my suggestion would be to finish running through the guide and post the appropriate logs in the Spyware and Viruses forum. I'd echo Patio's advice to check the appropriate "access controls" but chances are your access is being denied by the AV 2010 thing you somehow acquired.

Naturally you can ignore Geek-9pm's visions of a universe where a Linux live CD can disinfect a Windows installation easily.

Solve : Constant "program not responding" message, HELP Please?

Answer»

Hello all, I've been around a while and usually I can figure this stuff out myself but this problem has me stumped.
First, my setup
XP pro, SP3 32bit
Athlon 64x2, 2.93 gb ram
Firefox 4.0, eset smart security

Ok the best way to describe what is going on is with an example. Say I'm browsing and want to download a file, like malwarebytes. I click on the download link and the download box comes up but it's white, then firefox freezes, I click the X and I get the "program not responding" error. I end now and FF closes. I re-open FF and it restores my page/pages. I try to dl again and same thing.
FF browses fine, opens new tabs fine and runs fast.
Another example, offline. I have a .rar file to extract. I right click on the file and try and extract it with 7-zip or winrar. The extract box pops up and when I click ok it turns white and freezes. I click on the X and I get "program not responding".
Those are a couple examples, it does it with other proggy's to.
Also, my outlook express won't open. It acts like it's going to then turns all white and yes you guessed it, I hit the X and I get "program not responding".
I have searched for hours to try and solve this one but to no avail. What could be going on??

I have run malwarebytes scans, eset scans etc and it turns up nothing. I haven't installed anything new.

Oh yeah I forgot. I can't open IE either. Even when I try windows update, a white box pops up and "program not responding".

Any and all help will be GREATLY appreciated, thank you!1.Did it WORK before with the current softwares installed or anything added that causes the issue?
2.Have you tried running in safemode with networking and scanning with Malwarebytes or Antispyware?
Make sure they are updated before performing a complete scan.
3.If you have any external DEVICES installed such as memory card readers, try removing it from the PC.
4. Try disabling some features(Antivirus, Antispyware,Firewall, Antispam) from ESET and try downloading again or if you are keeping a software installer of ESET smart security, try uninstalling it and use another Antivirus such as Avira or Avast. You could also use Windows firewall instead and try updating your OS and drivers.
Thank you for the reply Jason.
It worked fine before, I haven't added anything.  I ran scans in safe mode with MB and Superantispyware, both updated but were clean.
No memory card readers, just an external HDD and burner and even with those disconnected, same problems.
I disabled Eset and still same issues.  I've used Eset for years, it's my favorite of them all and I've never had problems and I don't SEE how it could be causing this problem.
I can't update my OS manually because IE won't open.  All drivers are up to date.
Any other suggestions anyone? What happens in safe mode?Do you have any description or details of errors or messages aside from program not responding?
Quote

IE won't open
Have you tried running it without add-ons or reinstalling it?
If you are keeping an ESET installer software, I would completely uninstall it and try using another free antivirus(Avira or Avast) to troubleshoot the problem. It could run from software to hardware problem or programs conflicting or corrupted. You could also ran diagnostic test for you HD and RAM or use one RAM module for testing.I had a similar problem, on XP using IE, How I first noticed was my desktop shortcuts wouldn't open programs then using Start/All Programs that once I clicked on any prog or accessory that it wouldnt open (including Sys Recovery and SysInf, any application repair) and the icons would turn white. Then I couldnt DL anything, would go to 98% then box says DL failed. If this is anything like problems you are having you try to open a program in folders a box says open with: choice of programs on your comp or ask if web help will open it. And web help page opens same window everytime where no links can be DL'd) Neither works. when I started looking in my folders, all my .exe .dll .ini .bat any Media Device App icons would be white and say in properties Unknown Application and trying to open it, it would say something about it has no file association, meaning it couldnt be opened by any device or driver.
IF you see those desktop icons, all the icons in all programs changing to the white icons, the icons in Control Panel stay same icon, but dont open a 2nd time. and nothing Downloads. It's already too late, UNLESS your task manager will open. then maybe you can associate each device with its program path. But if it opens, Do not close it, any program you can open, dont close it till you've DONE all you could with it.

I had roundabout ways to open Media Players, they can only be opened by having a song or vid "Open with" your player.

I saw so many people describe these symptoms on help sites and every tech gave bad advice, if you cant open or DL anything they'd say DL this or Run this Virus removal, or Malicious software remover. I hope you dont have it. Only difference is my IE still worked just fine.  I did get a Dl of a virus scan to scan and print out results. Called Panda Active Scan, the scan is free and thorough. I have Trojan Virus at 2 or 3 locations, all the executional devices had a virus caledl Adware Virus. The 68 threats and problems were printed on 5 pages. Its a free scan, the removal tool you pay for, but that cant be completely downloaded either, the scan wasnt either.
I dont know if is virus you have, but check the signs of white icons, if it starts,  disconnect from your modem, you were hijacked. Make sure you use different name for Administrator. Your only chance is offline, Hope you have made back ups or have XP disk, they STOPPED selling.  If not, you can save personal files onto disks, then with disk, Full Recovery. I'm still working on this.  It wont even open FF or IE in regular mode anymore.  BUT, in safe mode, which is what I'm in now, everything works perfect.  (safemode with networking).

So, it must be a driver or program that is loading at startup that is causing this mess.  What do you guys think? No one knows huh?  Par for the course, no big deal I'll figure the [language edited by Allan]out like I always do.  This is a weekend. Solve : temp user profile created for login ~ how to get my data back?

Answer»

Hi,
The hard drive on our laptop was crashing so we bought a new one, used Apricorn EZgig software to clone the hard drive to the new drive and installed the new drive into the laptop.  It was working great last night but this morning I got a log in profile error that says the profile could be corrupt and it was logging me in with a temp one.  I did search the forums here and found one thread regarding this issue but the solutions offered are a bit beyond what I know how to do with a PC
I understand that the profile is probably lost for good, and I'm okay with that, but I'd like to get the kids gaming files.  I do have the old hard drive on an external drive but I don't have a clue how to access them there.
I can log in with the other profiles but the game DATA is not on them, only on *my* profile (which is the one that won't start up.)
In the most simple terms, is there a way to transfer the files from the external hard drive (the one that I used until last night when I cloned it) or transfer them (easily) from the old profile to the new one that I had to CREATE?
Thanks in advance for all your help!
TinaFrom what you've said, it looks like only the login data has been lost.  The files should still be under:

X:\DOCUMENTS and Settings\Username\My Documents

Replace X with your main drive letter (probably C) and Username with the original name of the user account.

-FleexySorry, I've got an Apple Mac background and I'm still getting lost in the world of pc's.
Do I look for that folder from the new user profile?  And then I can transfer over from that acct by dragging the files to the new acct?   Or is there ANOTHER method I need to use?

Also, my son did get the profile to load once ~ if I can get it to load again, is there a shared folder that I can move the files into that I can then pull the files off of from the new profile?

Thanks for helping us with this ~ I really appreciate it!http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

Solve : Display Theme?

You mean desktop background and browse for jpeg files? You could always use the Appearance TAB, Advanced to change certain colors or fonts. Some changes may affect certain programs. QUOTE from: jason2074 on April 16, 2011, 12:44:51 AM

THAT'S where it is - I knew it was somewhere. Thanks. Out of curiosity, what does the Theme tab do? The drop-down has a "browse" selection that lets you go to My Pictures, but you can't see the JPEG files. Is that normal?Themes change the whole appearance....background image; menu bars; sound ASSIGNMENTS; mouse pointers etc.

You may have none yet if it shows empty...what OS ? ? Quote from: patio on April 16, 2011, 07:00:27 AM

WinXP. There are quite a few themes listed in the drop-down. You also have an OPTION to look for more themes on-line and browse.

Looks to me that Themes and Desktop Background are the same thing.Their not...

Solve : Recovery Files of XP?

How can I setup system Restore of my Mini laptop using XPOSWelcome to the forum.

Please provide more formation about your computer and the operating system. From you post it is not clear what you want to do.

An XP POS may be an embedded XP version,  so system recovery would not be the same aw a standard XP version.

A' mini' computer may have a CPU very different from the Intel CPU used in
popular laptops. Why is it called a 'mini' computer?

If you wish to archive you data, that should already be part of the POS package you have. Is that true?

Solve : User groups?

I have a computer.
I have QUITE a few other users on my computer and do not want them to be able to make system WIDE changes such as accessing permissions. However I still want my users to be able to install programs which I do not see as being a big deal.
If I set them as  'User' they cannot install programs,
If I set them as 'power user' they can make all SORTS of system wide changes that I do not want them to be able to make.

Does anyone have any idea how I can grant a user acount permission to install programs without uprgading it to a power user or administrator?  Thanks .Which Operating System? In XP, I know that Limited access will do the trick...

There are some tools out there like Tweak XP ETC that can hide certain adminsitrative / important features under XP.

You might want to learn more about Windows XP policy settings. You can do a lot there.

If your users are not too handy with PC's then set the NTFS rights on the Administrative tools folder to Administrator only.

There is a lot you can do to make a PC idiot proof and still play new games. look for Policies, Policy tools.

click start->run and type MMC
Add a new snap-in called Security analysis. (study before blindly doing) and change the out-of-box status to more secure etc.

Hope I steered you in the right directionMy users are not handy with pc.

Hey Maldod,

GIVE this a read:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;272960Thanks Monty but the Microsoft page refers to the error occurring with Windows ME. I am running Win98 and when I tried the solution proposed by Microsoft i.e. to change the "limit the memory" SETTING to "8 Mb or higher" I already had a setting much higher than that and when I reduced the setting to 16Mb I got an error message that my m/c appeared to be short of memory and a suggestion to run the windows setup )(which i presume means reistalling Windows). I tried various SETTINGS from 16mb upwards but returned to the "Real mode system memory allocation failed" error.

I remain stuck with a machine that won't boot except to Safe Mode.Assuming that Windows ME was running happily for a while an then -ARGHHH..

From what I understand, is that the memmory could be faulty. Try running on one memory module if you have TWO. Test with a simmilair size memmory.

You could attempt to reinstall Windows ME without formatting the HD. But I am sceptical about that. Since your problem refers to : REAL MODE system allocation failed and not Virtual (swap file stuff)Good point Gustaaf!  You can google 'memory diagnostic'.  I have downloaded two, but have only used the one from MS.  It has always found errors when they have existed.  I use the lowest level settings.  If your memory is faulty, that would obviously be easier than having to reinstall.

Hope this helps!

Solve : Need help to turn audio back on.?

Answer»

I recent bought a new PC, with Windows 7.  I gave my old PC (still in great shape), with Windows XP Professional, to a friend who lives 200 miles away.

While mostly a novice, he is getting along well with it except for ONE issue -  sound.  With my phone and email help he bought and installed a pair of Logitek speakers using the "pea green" stereo output jack on the PC.  He receives the Windows sign-on music loud and clear each time he turns the PC on.  However, when he surfs to a website which includes audio with the visual (you tube, etc.) he sees the visual information, but hears no audio.  I was using the PC, when I had it, to input and edit external audio, and I had probably reset some of the software switching. Working with him on the phone, I have not been able to talk him through the sound windows to effect a fix, since I can't see his XP screen.

Can someone provide us a step by step sequence of instructions (CLICK START, click CONTROL PANEL, click...) to go into the software, and reconnect audio coming from internet sources to the speakers?

Go to control panel. Select "System". Select hardware tab. Select "device manager". Scroll down to sound, video controllers. Open sound video controllers. Is there a yellow circle with an exclamation point in it? If so, your missing a sound card, or on board sound driver. What about music CDs? Can he hear sound from those?

Is it just flash VIDEOS that have the problem? Quote from: JJ 3000 on April 19, 2011, 02:48:04 PM

Bingo!  You're the man!

I got in touch with my friend this morning, and had him put an audio CD in the DISC burner/player.  A window opened on the screen asking him if he wanted to play the CD using Windows Media Player.  I immediately had him click on it, and the CD audio filled the room.  I then had him remove the CD and go to a youtube sight with audio.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxvgM9zQc7c

The sound of my daughter's ukulele band, "Tiny Tim Overdrive", then filled the room.  It's interesting.  That's all it took to get the audio working.

Thanks once again.

Solve : Extract/List data recorded on DOS log file?

Answer»

Hi, we are running a program(MHDD) on DOS and it is supposed to have record hard disk volume headers and other program run details in a log file. I am trying to search for a utility program that can either extract and reformat the data from the log file WHEREUPON  I can use Query to print OR a utility program that can just print out the data from the log file. It would be nice to have a utility that list out the fields from the log such that it makes sense and not just hex representation. Does such a utiliity program exists? Btw, the log file is recorded on CD-ROM media.
Thank u very much.I am not sure what you are asking.

Are you looking for SOMETHING to open a log file? What is the extension of the file? .log? Or something else.

Solve : Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt...HELP!?

Answer»

Help! Two days ago, I restored my laptop to one month earlier to try to recover my contacts in MS outlook that got deleted. I used the windows restore, and set it up to restore overnight. When I woke up, the error message shown in the video was on the screen. I have tried using the Windows XP DISC to GET into recovery mode to restore the missing file, but every time I try to get to the recovery console it goes to the blue screen. I think if I can get there, I can restore the file and get Windows to open again. I've attached a link to a video showing exactly what my computer does. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

You can skip from 0:40 to 2:10, it is just the disc going through everything.

Thanks in advance!ntoskrnl.exe is the BRAIN of windows so it cant run without it and the setup cd most likely wont starting because the disc is damaged. that laptop looks NEW enough to have its own recovery system  on it assuming you didn't delete it. try HOLDING down the ctrl and f11 while booting as soon as u see the dell logo.

Solve : Blocked making on line e mail accounts like g mail or MS mail??

Answer»

Running a Dell 2.2GHZ 2 GB  80 GB hard drive with windows XP home had a virus had it removed.
Got it home starts runs fine, can get on the INTERNET using  the normal DSL connection, everything works fine but.

When I try to go on line to MAKE a new on line e mail account on g mail or MS it will not allow me to do so.
I can surf the internet fine but when I try to make a account it does not allow the page to open.

Others have come over and gone on to use their e mail accounts, they normally can't but if we restart the westell modem normally they can get to their account once. Then the next time it will not allow them to get to the in box.

After re -setting all the on line under "tools" very low, no luck. So I called Centurylink, they said they never had anything like that happen before and it was not the modem.
I have run AVG free plus "Windows Security Essentials plus" " Advanced System Care"- IO-bits "Security 360" nothing was found and nothing else is a problem but?

Just cannot get any account to allow me to make a on line e mail   from MSN mail or G mail ?  Will not go back to Yahoo since that is where I got the virus to start. Thanks for any good ideas? Quote from: Mr.PeteT on April 20, 2011, 04:50:31 PM

The files are in folders, and I am able to go to "cmd", and with the HELP of a small BATCH file, change the attribs back to -h. Each sub-directory file has a different name, so this is taking a long time. The names are like SUN03_1 , THUR23_2, etc. I want to go to a directory and administer to each sub-directory!Ever try to use the SEARCH function? Use the WinKey+F to open it, then select "All Files and Folders." Look down to the "More Advanced Options" drop menu and change the attributes of the search so it finds hidden folders. Solve : Flatiron LG L1718S?

I just received an LG Flatiron L1718S from a friend but there was no manual with it.   I've made the screen 1152X864 PIXELS and I'm alright with that.

My problem is that the font looks strange and not very CLEAR.   I can't figure out if there is a way to fix that.   ALSO...I feel the pictures are too bright and when I press the brightness button on the right side...I don't know what to do after that.  I don't see any other buttons to use to adjust the brightness.

If anyone knows the answer to this, I'd appreciate your help.  Thanks.LCD monitors should be left at their native screen resolution, which in CASE of your monitor is 1280 x 1024.

Solve : USB Print Server?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I have a little problem, one of the user has a new usb hp PRINTER installed on her desktop and is shared. When she RDP (PNP enabled) to a virtual machine she can't see the shared printer and therefore can't print. The new printer has wireless capabilities with usb, not NIC. We have a C network.

We purchased a network usb server with a switch connected both of them and installed the cd from the usb print server but the ip embedded has 169.254.10.2.

Could it be that the usb print server is not COMPATIBLE with our network (C)?

Is the usb print server for home use only?

Do you have any ideas or solutions?

Thanks in advanceThere is some information in the Microsoft Knowledge Base that USB printing can bring problems into a network.

Makers that SELL all-in-one printers recommend the printer be networked either wireless or Ethernet, but not a share using USB.

That is the limit of my knowledge. Wireless printing is so easy, it is hardly WORTH the effort to resolve the USB issue. IMHO.

Solve : IRQ conflict?

Answer»

Hi.
Hope I’m posting in the right section.

Have just resurrected my old Iqon P.C formatted and re-installed X.P had a lot of trouble FINDING the right drivers for it as Iqon have gone out of business.

Anyway it’s all working except I have an IRQ conflict between the primary IDE and the ATAPI sharing channel 14.

I tried manually setting the channels but they are both greyed out so cannot access the change settings tab.

Would this conflict also stop the DVD drive from OPENING it just makes a clonk sound when I push the eject button?

Any ideas or thought welcome.

Have you tried to use another DVD drive to test?

Hi.
I have discovered that the DVD drive still works, if I use a paper clip in the manual eject hole I GET a whirring sound then it ejects, and it reads C.Ds O.K.

I have reformatted and that has cleared the IRQ conflict, I’M guessing that was because I installed the wrong drivers.

Still having no luck with the drivers, tried the various sites, and EVEN using the hardware I.D there seems to be lots of different drivers for the same thing.

DLoad and install Everest Home....Free.
It may assist in tracking down some of those wayward drivers....
MBoard chipset drivers should GO 1st...

Solve : HELP!! Re-formating problem?

Answer»

I am a noob when it comes to computers so please help me.

I have a XP (on a dell latitude C810) that I decided to format. So I put in the CD and went through the instructions and it didn't work.
I decided to retry formatting. When it was only ~10% done, my brother unplugged the POWER cord and the laptop shut off. (My laptops battery it broken - when you unplug the AC power it turns off). I restarted the laptop and it loaded the dell image, then went to a screen that read:

"Primary hard disk drive not found
Fixed optical drive not found
No bootable devices -- strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility"

I hit F1 and it says "No bootable devices -- strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility"

PLEASE HELP ME

First off do you have the original recovery disc that came with the computer?

Second, the hard drive is not formated anymore and so is not being recognized. This shouldn't matter since you still need to boot from the recovery dics and continue what you started.

You may have tried this but you say you are noob so I would try this first.

Put your recovery disk in your default cd-rom then start your computer.

Right from the start it loads the bios. Look for an option to set the boot order or select that the computer boots from the cd-rom. Usualy F2 will get you into the bios options. Some bios' automaticaly give you choices what to boot from everytime you boot up.

If you cannot boot from the cd-rom for some reason then you may have to go another rout but it seems this is where your PROBLEM is. You need to boot from cd-rom and reinstall windows. The errors are from trying to boot the hard drive which is not usable in its current state.Find the documentation for the poor Dell. I am very familiar with Dell computers and the error messages you gave are typical, but indicate that you have not read the documentation. You can contact Dell and they will give you the details of how to set up the system. The Dell has more than just one BIOS version. So it matters which Laptop or PC you have. On the Dell site they will ASK you for the serial number and service number. If the Dell is not working and you are on another PC,  they can not read it automatically. You have it enter the mumblers of the sick machine into the search box.
Also, do not try to use a generic XP with any Dell made in the past few years.Even when you have the product key. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 06, 2009, 08:40:26 PM

Solve : Is it possible to connect an Acer Aspire One to a touch screen monitor??

Answer»

I have been SEARCHING, and searching, and I can't FIND a direct answer to my question. My Acer Aspire One has a TINY screen and I heard you can connect a larger monitor. I thought that I might as well attach a touch screen monitor, 22", but I'm not sure if the touch screen will WORK in the first place. It depends on the screen. I'm guessing your laptop had VGA output (that's what their website says) so you'll want a monitor with input for that (although you can likely get an adapter if it doesn't).

Touch screen monitors usually have some kind of second CONNECTOR for the screen itself. To make sure it's going to work with the laptop, you'll want to make sure the touch screen connector is USB, which your laptop will have.

Other than those two things, you really should have a problem with whatever monitor you choose.

This is plain wrong. I mean, yes, if somebody says "I run linux" it's clear they mean that they run an Operating System that uses the Linux kernel, but Linus didn't make XFCE/Gnome/etc; just the kernel. Although I think calling it "GNU/Linux" would be equally stupid because not all free software used on Linux systems are GNU. Linux is the Kernel; the rest is other free software; for example, the DESKTOP environments aren't "linux"; for the most part they work equally well on other kernels.

Quote
Therefore it can not have a virus.
here's an idea, stop making stupid assertions and or drawing out arguments I never made to argue against. I never said Linux-based systems c ouldn't have a virus. Of course they can. *censored*, if you ask me they are more susceptible than windows, merely because of the fact that there are so many different people working on various Open Source projects and they aren't all necessarily audited properly for things like buffer overflows which can easily allow any user to simply become the root user with a single command. Of course, the thing is, the problem in that case has absolutely nothing to do with Linux based Operating systems and everything to do with the fact that C is for some reason still a preferred language, despite the fact that it practically works against the creation of "secure" code. ("secure" in the context of exploitation).

In any case,No operating System is immune from viruses. a virus is pretty much just a program that attempts to promulgate itself through either the network (worm) or by copying itself into memory and then copying itself to removable media and then infecting other machines through that media.

Two things prevent virus makers from bothering with either a Linux or even in many cases a Mac virus:

-the vast majority of computer users run Windows. Fact.
-most Linux users are more computer savvy then the average user.

So if you had to choose from developing a piece of malware that could run on hundreds of millions of machines of which a large majority were technical sycophants who will believe any messages you put up claiming to be "from the system", or a few hundred thousand machines whose users were smart enough to know you and anyone who looks like you were a scumbag, which would you choose? It's pretty obvious.

And if you've ever had to use XCode you know why nobody bothers to write Mac viruses. *censored* I'm convinced the vast majority of people who use xcode only do so because they are paid, likely by companies trying to get some OFFSHOOT application on the app store. I used it once and it was like I went through a time warp where compiler and IDE technology had REGRESSED to the state of Turbo Pascal 2.Mostly I would agree, BC.

No. Just because a lot of people decide on a de facto naming convention doesn't make it de jure.

GNU/Linux naming controversy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The GNU/Linux naming controversy is a dispute among members of the free and open source software community over how to refer to the computer operating system commonly called Linux.

GNU/Linux is a term promoted by the Free Software Foundation (FSF), its founder Richard Stallman, and its supporters, for operating systems that include GNU software and the Linux kernel.[1] The FSF argues for the term GNU/Linux because GNU was a longstanding project to develop a free operating system, of which they say the kernel was the last missing piece.[1]

It's possible to get a virus on Linux but since 99%+ of people are on Windows or Mac why would someone bother to write a virus that 99% of computers are immune to?

Possible? Yes. Likely? A little more so than aliens attacking. Here an old article written in 2004. post.Judge for yourself if his argument makes sense today.

Security Report: Windows vs Linux
An independent assessment
By Nicholas Petreley
Posted in Security, 22nd October 2004 07:26 GMT
... Perhaps the most oft-repeated myth regarding Windows vs. Linux security is the claim that Windows has more incidents of viruses, worms, Trojans and other problems because malicious hackers tend to confine their activities to breaking into the software with the largest installed base...

This reasoning backfires when one considers that Apache is by far the most popular web server software on the Internet. According to the September 2004 Netcraft web site survey, [1] 68% of web sites run the Apache web server. Only 21% of web sites run Microsoft IIS. If security problems boil down to the simple fact that malicious hackers target the largest installed base, it follows that we should see more worms, viruses, and other malware TARGETING Apache and the underlying operating systems for Apache than for Windows and IIS...

Here an old article written in 2004. post.Judge for yourself if his argument makes sense today.

It probably wasn't even right in 2004.

"In 2000, Windows comprised about half of the server operating system market, followed by Unix and Netware at about 17 percent each and Linux reaching towards 10 percent, she said, noting that today Windows owns about 70 percent, Linux about 20 percent, with Unix below 10 percent and Netware BARELY registering.  "

from http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Linux-and-Open-Source/Linux-Losing-Market-Share-to-Windows-Server/

Viruses and malware are more prevalent on windows for the very reason he argues against- because malicious crackers tend to confine their activities to breaking into the software with the largest installed base.

So, you ask. What about Apache and Linux servers?

that's a moot point, because web server's aren't used to browse the web and download software. And the person administering generally knows what they are doing. The only downloads they would probably make would be software updates which themselves have well documented hashes that can be compared to ensure it is untampered. Crackers break into web servers- of course they do. But they use exploits to gain access to the machine, not viruses or malware, once they've taken control of the machine, then they might place a rootkit and some of their own files in a hidden location, to run whatever software they want, not likely to have the server owner's best interests in mind. However, Viruses, Malware, and spyware are almost completely a problem on client machines, not servers. Server's need to be more concerned about patching exploits to prevent being "owned"; viruses and malware are useless to somebody seeking to take over a web server. How the *censored* could you use a malicious piece of software, regardless of the OS of the server, to take control? Unless the system is bad configured to begin with, you simply aren't going to be able to run arbitrary code on the server to begin with, so Viruses and malware are a no go. Viruses and malware are written for client machines, not servers. You aren't going to be able to trick somebody into purchasing scam software by popping up dialog's on a server.

Solve : Icon for *.pwn files resets to "unknown" while keeping the file associations?

Answer»

Well, whenever i set the icon to represent files with the EXTENSION .pwn, it lasts for minutes or maybe hours, but it RESETS itself after some TIME..

It's annoying, as the file extension is actually known, and therefore should have an icon i can recognize

I have tried to manually recreate the file extension and it's associations, however that does not solve the problem, it just works for a few hours..
If i just open Tools -> Folder Options -> File types (dunno if that's their real names in english, but it should be similar) and alter the extension's icon from there, it works for like 30 mins, then it's reset

Any WAY to solve it? Quote

it lasts for minutes or maybe hours, but it resets itself after some time..

Do you log off or restart during that time period?

It is possible that malware is resetting the file associations? it occasionally will do that.As there is no reason to log out, I never do
And there is only 1 account made (Not counting the premade "Administrator")
And the screensaver doesn't log out the current user + I'm automaticly logged in on startup

Malware?, Hmm, that could be the reason, haven't RUN any scans lately - Will run some scans soon & report back hereWell, seems to work now, so i believe it's solvedNope, still having the problem...

Any suggestions?

A lot of dead or failing optical drives will display or act to such behavior as in trying to read certain CDs but unable either the LENS is worn out or requires certain timing due to mechanical(gear) misalign. Such examples are on CD or DVD players. You could try your own FIXTURE to this problem as the way you see it possible.  The same is happening to me and hi think its probably the lens that died...tried every thing , firmware update , switching jumper config (cause  hi have another) nothing worked have to buy a new one.  IF someone have any better idea  ?help please Quote from: pauloXjorge on April 27, 2011, 03:54:11 PM

Consider it this way. If the interior lights, headlights, heater, and air circulation in a car works, you cannot conclude that the entire car is fully functional.

My Toshiba Satellite 440CDX's CD-ROM drive performs similarly. Quote from: shashgo on April 26, 2011, 07:21:17 PM

The motor may spin the disk & the light may shine but if a read or write laser (or both) has failed or the associated ELECTRONICS or the drive control electronics, then its a dead drive. Not every dead piece of hardware can be revived with geek magic.

Solve : using or moving music files causes my pc to lock up?

Answer»

AMD Athlon 64 4000+
nVidia GeForce 6100
894 MB RAM

this screen lock problem has been happening for a few months and i finally had the money to order a case for my other hard DRIVE to backup all files and format my drive to reinstall windows and hopefully fix this issue, but it happened about four times in the process of trying to backup my files and then has continued to happen after the fresh format! it just seems to me that every time i want to access my music files or do more than one thing at a time it just locks up and i have to manually power down and restart it.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Without 'mo details, only some guesswork can be given.
How old is the system? Is it home-built?
Have you had problems before now?
Do you have another RAM set you can use?
Will it run on just 256MB of RAM?
Do you have odd-ball USB devices? Like cheap ones the don't conform to specs. Unplug them
Do you have wireless mouse or keyboard? Some can lock a PC.
Is your power supply OK?
Are you using two CD drives?
Does you CPU get very hot? Do you overclock?
Can it run with another video card or built-in  video?

The system was purchased as a package four years ago and hasn't given me much trouble until lately, but now that I think of it they started happening around when I installed the second cd drive. Also, the CPU runs at about 135f and I just stripped the inside and dusted the *censored* out of it. I have a set of 1g ram chips coming Monday as well, so I was hoping that would help. I will try to disconnect the second cd drive for now.I have updated my RAM to 2.9G and disconnected the second disc drive to no avail. it literally freezes while COMPLETELY Idle. the only information i have found that could be the problem is the power supply, and i think mine is a little dusty. so, if anyone has another idea of what it could be or additional system tests i could run i would greatly appreciate it!1.Have you tried safemode?
2.On what partition of the HD are your music files located or being accessed?
3.You also could try re-applying thermal paste for your processor.
4. Quote
Can it run with another video card or built-in  video?
Try reinstalling sound or video drivers and swap test HD cable connection.
5. How much used and free space is available?
6. Check BIOS settings and try disabling caching/shadowing if available. If you use XP, disable also IDE HDD Block Mode. Save and Exit.
first off, what can i do in safe mode? just run there all the time? let me give the full run down so maybe we can get to the bottom of this. the problem first occurred about six months ago, but it was only when i would use my Zune player with my computer transferring files or just the zune software listening to music and it would only happen occasionally. after a while it started happening if i was doing almost anything with my music files, including burning cds. once it got to the point where i needed help here it was happening about five to ten minutes after i turned on the pc. i started to try an repair the problem by cleaning the dust from the comp and checking all the CONNECTIONS, then i transferred all of my important files to an external hard drive and did a complete format and reinstall of windows xp on the system. once that was complete i then added 2 gigs of ram and unplugged the second cdrom drive. today i replaced the thermal paste on the cpu and graphics card, and completely disassembled the innards of the pc and dusted the crap out of it all, making sure to look at all connections and check for any discoloration or SWOLLEN capacitors, and also for any obvious signs there was a problem with all components, which there weren't. now, i turn it on, try to run a few programs and get her going, play three songs through my zune software and we're back to square one with a lego screen. and when i turned it back on to check the temps in the bios menu the *censored* thing froze again!! the temp on the pcu was only 47c too! so maybe someone could give me a better solution BC i really despise computer repair establishments.Since it happens only upon using the Zune player(which I honestly never used) which makes your PC to freeze, could there be a relationship between the transferring of files to other media storage or vice-versa or settings that need to change or sync. Have you look for default settings or changes needed online for the zune software?

Solve : Fresh install troubles?

Answer»

Hello Again,
I am doing a fresh install of my Windows XP Home Edition and I have a few problems.
First I have fogotten how to change drive letters. My DVDrive comes up as "D:" and my second hard drive as "E:".

Second. How the heck do I get that darned 'SECURITY badge' off my notification area?
I DO NOT WANT Windows monitoring my security, thanks anyway!
Third. During the downloading and installing of all the updates my computewr suddenly wants me to sign on with every reboot or turn on. How do I get rid of this?
If I install my old drive it just turns on. No muss- no fiss.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Eric T.
I'm afraid we'll NEED more details on what you've done up to this point...sounds like you have Windows installed twice...

PS...all security features can be turned off/on so we'll worry about that later...My computer has drawers for 2 disk drives.
I USE this to allow me to clone my main drive (ACTIVE) to a backup drive (1 BACK, 2 BACK etc.).
I then take the backup drive out and place it on the shelf where a virus can not get to it.
Recently my Acronis True Image program's performance went WAY south, goimg from 15 - 20 minutes to over an hour to clone.
Soooo, I am trying a fresh install on one of my 3 backup drives.

So. How does one rearrange the drive letters? I've don it before, I'm just having a SENIOR moment here...
The sign-on thing and the security thing still bug me too
Eric   reply 1
...
Not any clearer whats going on as it was before...
Do these "drawers" hold hard drives or CD drives ? ?

How MANY hard drives are in the machine currently and how are they jumpered and hooked up ? ?There are two (2) drawers in my computer case.
Each "drawer" will accept a "REAY" which holds 1 hard disk drive. In this computer I am using PATA or IDE drives jumpered for "CABLE SELECT" which I use because I am lrgally blind and only have one working hand since my stroke over 3 years ago.
I can slide a druve unto the second spot, boot up and clone to it from the boot drive in the first slotm turn off the computer remove the old boot drive from the first slot, move the newly clone written drive from the second slot to the first slot and boot right upo.
No moving jumpers (which I can't rvrn see) needed!

OK now. I have now remembered how to change drive letters, that's done. I figured out how to turn the Security Shield off, that'd done.

Can anybody tell me how to make the computer STOP MAKING ME CLICK ON MY NAME???
I never created a password so it doesn't ask for that, I just want it to turn on without me needing to do anything but press the power button.

Eric     reply 2
This startup problem may have to do with how you partition your hard drive or a dual boot setup. Have you check your Startup and Recovery under My Computer Properties, Advance tab, startup and recovery, default operating system and or time of display OS and recovery partition?
Umm. Not a dual boot setup.
I only have one OS on any one hard drive.

I just looked at that place on THIS (the 'old' drive) and noticed a check in a box allowing
30 seconds to display OS choices. I unchecked it. I hope to get a faster boot? Maybe??

I'll look into this on the 'NEW' drive.
For booting up straight to desktop in windows XP, go to Control panel - user accounts - change the way users log on and off - take the check mark out of use welcome screen - click apply options, then restart the pc.
Well that made it DIFFERENT but itstil requires a mouse click to get to the desktop.
I am going to try to ask Microsoft, and wait 1 day for a response.
Then I am going to format the drive and  start over.
How many user account do you have on this machine?

I would also check if BIOS setting for Fast/Quick boot is enabled.Well I got the answer from Microsoft.
I downloaded TWEAK UI and installed it.
Then I ran it,expanded the "LOGON" entry on the left. Then click "AUTOLOGON".
Then check "LOGON AUTOMATICALLY AT STARTUP".
Then click "OK" and restart the computer.

I am keeping a copy of these instructions for future reference.

Solve : can't boot windows?

Answer» RECENTLY I crashed my hard drive.  Ended up reformatting and REINSTALLING NT.  After several days of everything working, I started my COMPUTER and got the following message:
"Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk.  Check boot path and disk hardware.
Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information."
Does anyone have any advise for me?TRY examining / correcting the boot.ini. Perhaps this does not point to the booting partition. (Boot from CD and select the option for command tools / dos box so to speak. Rebuild the boot.ini from the help tools available. Could also rebuild the boot sector etc.

Examine the disk status with a bootable ERD CD (Emergency Repair Disk - Winternals) Try to determin if the disk is unstable or that a disk crash is imininent.

Enable SMART features if you have any.
If you are using mutiple drives. Try unattaching them and boot the primary disk.

All in All, sounds like the HD is going to DIE on you..

Solve : Need a Windows file?

Answer»

One of my Windows XP Home files
[windows\system32\winmode.exe]
got hit by a virus and my Norton Viruscan couldn't deal with it. So I deleted the file, using the Windows Recovery Console. So far it doesn't seem to have had any effect on the running of the system but I would like to replace it in CASE something goes wrong in the future.

Can anyone please email me a clean copy of this file, or post it on a website, or tell me where I can get one?

Does anyone know what the file does?

Thanks and regards,
Calhob
winmode is USED in win3.1 for graphics use....winxp does not use this file......The file Norton TRIED to disinfect was most likely in use. I suggest that whenever you ATTEMPT to remove VIRUSES again in the future, you do so in safe mode. Thanks for your advice, Merlin and Raptor!

So far so good, no ill effects from removing the file, so I'll just forget about it.

Cheers

Solve : Windows XP "Operating System Not Found"?

Answer»

Good Day All,

I have been searching everywhere for possible answers to my problem and have tried several solutions with no luck.  I am trying to upgrade my computer with more storage (2 Western Digital HD’s) and am receiving the following error message: "Operating System Not Found”

I have tried several different SETUPS but I only got them working together briefly once, and that was during setup and installing software.  I have tried LOADING Windows XP and all the updates and then installing the second drive, I have PARTITIONED the 160 GB drive into two equal partitions I even tried installing the 160 GB drive as the slave.  I have set the jumpers as Master and Slave as well as allowing the cable to select.

Do I need to upgrade my BIOS or is there a driver I need to install?

Do the install and then add the second drive one its own cable. Keep the second DVD drive out for now.

Thank you for your help.  At first I thought it was going to work, Windows loaded but when I checked "My Computer" I couldn't find the "D" drive.  So I guess I am back to were I started from.  Do you have any other suggestions?Double check the cabling and slot assignments...the HDD's should be on IDEO opticals on IDE1

MBoard==================================Master=============Slave.

Also check that the drive jumpers are set properly.
And provide more info about what is on these drives....IE: is there an OS on the D drive also ? ?

Do not connect the other HDD until the Windows install is completely finished as was suggested...I have doubled checked everything and the slot assignments are correct, I even doubled checked the cables to make sure they were correct, IE HDD's were on the HDD cable and CD-Rom's and the IDEO cable.

1) MB===============Master======Slave; jumpers set to Master and Slave - Nothing - same error message
Nothing happened when I tried to run Windows Recovery Consol, there was no HDD for me to choice from the computer couldn't find either C or D and went from loading the keyboard to the CD-Rom's.

2) MB===============Master======Slave; jumpers set to Cable Select - Nothing - again the same message
Nothing happened when I tried to run Windows Recovery Consol, there was no HDD for me to choice from the computer couldn't find either C or D and went from loading the keyboard to the CD-Rom's.

3) MB===============Slave======Master; jumpers set to Master and Slave - Nothing - same error message
Ran Windows Recovery with the fixmbr - Nothing; fixboot - Windows loaded and ran until a Microsoft update and then the problem reappeared!  I tried to run Windows Recovery again and the computer couldn't find "C" drive and wanted me to select "D" drive as the Windows drive needing help.

4) MB===============Slave======Master; jumpers set to Cable Select - Nothing - again the same message
Nothing happened when I ran Windows Recovery - The computer couldn't find either C or D and went from loading the keyboard to the CD-Rom's.

I waited until everything was installed before I installed the "D" drive and there was nothing on the "D" drive when I first received the error message "Operating System Not Found".  The only thing I haven't tried is using the 160 GB drive as the Slave, I have always tried using it as the Master drive.

There is no operating system on the D drive, games, Norton Backup, Kodak picture files, sound clips, BMP & JPeg's. no Windows files.BIOS date 1999! - 12 year old motherboard - cmos battery or hardware (HDD controller) defunct?
BIOS' from 1999 are generally limited by a 37.2GB barrier. What exactly happens when using drives larger then that depends on the system. my older computer simply freezes during boot when I have a drive larger then that installed.

Solve : Can .bat Files Execute Button Commands??

Answer»

I was wondering if it was possible to execute button commands in a batch file. For example Alt+ENTER.Only way to interface with buttons etc would be to use another keyboard/mouse macro that specificially CLICKS on an x,y location of the screen that is executable from the command prompt by which a batch file could use the start command to trigger the button command. I use this product for my automation needs: http://www.jitbit.com/macro-recorder/  This software works great and you can compile your automation routine as a stand alone exe to do anything you want. Quote

I think the OP was referring to buttons pressed on the keyboard.
Quote
For example Alt+Enter.

If that's the CASE. It only works in vbscript. Here is how you could do it.

Copy and paste into notepad and save as .vbs
Code: [Select]SET ws = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
ws.SendKeys "%{ENTER}"
Set ws = Nothing

Now you call it from a batch file:
Code: [Select]echo off
wscript /nologo whatever.vbs

If you are trying to send ALT + ENTER to the command prompt in order to full screen it, it won't work. It's a Microsoft bug. It will work for any other program though. If you need to maximize the command prompt inside batch, there is a way. Just post back if that's what you are trying to do.I was thinking that they were referring to a button in a GUI environment in which a button alt+enter event would be contained to only happening within the batched command shell itself when if its to control something outside the batch I cant see any way of doing it without the way that I suggested or other similar method of a keyboard/mouse macro. Quote

The method I posted should be able to control other PROGRAMS after they are started from the batch.Cool... so based on the window focus then after starting them with START within batch so the batch shell window is then not the focus.. Interesting!Right, it wouldn't be the focus because they are trying to send keys to the other program. I interpreted the question that they were looking for a way to use sendkeys in batch.

Solve : Sending http address in emails?

Answer»

I have a webspace allocated to me by my ISP. It now has several folders in which I have images and text PAGES. When I want to send someone the http of a page in one of my folders can I somehow prevent them from seeing the index containing all of the folders - and being able to open them.  This they can do by delteing the http back to the base address and seeing the site index.

Thank you for any advice you can give me

PeterDepending on the ISP, only if the files can be marked as Public or Not Public. It's unclear how you are in fact sending these e-mails...but noone recieving one will have ACCESS to your machine nor what you see on the screen when sending a message...be more specific...He's providing hyperlinks in the emails which link to photos located on ISP's servers PERSONAL WEB Space.  Could be Comcast, I have it, I've tried it.  Is it better than actually sending the photos?  Makes the email file size smaller.

Does this make it any clearer?Computer_Commando - yes, you understand my message. I don't think my ISP (PlusNet) offers the option to make folders or individual files non public, so the actual address of the web space can be used to see the index of all folders. Are you talking about the British Plusnet ISP?

If so, read about htaccess here

http://community.plus.net/library/tools/how-to-password-protect-your-website/

Once upon a time, I had a similar need.

I explored redirection services a little bit.
You can too, with GOOGLE, etc.

Many are not free, or have ads.

For you (and I),  watch for the capability to mask the real url.  Often it is not available.

I found:
http://www.co.cc/

And... sorry to say....  never did get it to work.
It said something about the url I'd entered being "blocked".   And I couldn't delete it and start over!    I believe I was following their directions.....

If you try it, and get it working,  let us know.

Or, perhaps someone else here, will know of a reliable one, that masks the real url,   and can let us both know.

Good luck with it.
