What are the current system specifications and what is the maximum amount of RAM that will fit into your mainboard? Quote

........as well sayingthat i am low on memory i have tried deleting some of the films i have stored on my computer but it does nothing to help with either problem...........

Here's one of your problems, you're trying to delete files from your hard drive to free up RAM. That's not going to do anything except free up SPACE on your hard drive.

RAM (Random Access Memory) is a volitile storage DEVICE. Meaning data doesn't stay in it when you turn your computer off. If you want to free up more memory, open up Task Manager (taskman.exe) and kill off some processes that you don't need.

Aside from that, go BUY some more RAM! 128 MB costs around $30 these DAYS.

Solve : Internet Explorer Network Problem?

Answer»

All of a sudden, internet explorer keeps giving me the "page cannot be displayed" page. My internet works fine, because I am posting this using Netscape. It is strange, on my other COMPUTER (same wireless NETWORK) internet explorer doesn't work either. But netscape does. Then I HIT "restore defaults" in the properties, but they didn't do anything. I tried REINSTALLING, but they still don't work. I don't know why internet explorer can't detect my network settings. I don't remember making any changes. Any help is appreciated.Go to IE>File and make sure the Work Offline option is not ticked.Nope, not ticked. This is REALLY strange, I think this happened about two days after installing Windows Media Player 10 on my XP computer and Windows Media Player 9 on my windows 98 computer. The thing is, I used windows media player ten with the internet. I think internet explorer didn't work before installing windows media player 9 on my windows 98 computer.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378

Solve : Windows XP ProfessionalSP2?

Answer»

I am getting a new computer shipped to me in about five days, and I have a few questions.  The computer will be a Dell Dimension 4700 Series, Intel Pentium 4 Processor, 80 GB ATA  hard drive, and 512 MB DDR2 at 400 MHz, with Windows XP.  This is a birthday gift to me from a friend. My present computer is only 10GB hard drive (with only 3.83 GB remaining), and it has Windows Professional SP2, with IE6SP2.  I will be giving my old one away to a family MEMBER, and I want to erase the hard drive, but not sure of the best way to do it (have not done it before)  On A CD-R, I have saved My Documents, My Favorites, and Registry Editor.   Do I need to save more items?

Also, when I get the new one, will I be able to copy to my new hard drive what is on the CD-R?   When the hard drive is erased, will that also erase everything in my Hot Mail and Yahoo Mail, or will everything be intact when I sign on from the new computer?

I tried to find, on this site, about erasing the hard drive, but I did not find anything for Windows XP.   I would get "Nothing Found".  (Maybe I used the wrong words.)

I have a CD with Windows XP Professional SP1.(Put on for me by a computer tech)  Will I be able to change the Windows XP, on the new computer, to the Windows Professional XP SP1 and then download SP2 from Windows Update?

Thank you

Anna Ruth

Wanted to attach a Mickey Mouse hug, but did not see an Attachment button.Ann:

Some older programs do not save the documents or other items you create to the My Documents folder.  An example is an old version of PrintShop that i own.  It saves all projects to it's own folder.  So look for this.

There is a program in Windows XP that you may run to transfer all your favorites, e-mail addresses, documents, etc. from your old computer to your new one.  It's migwiz.exe (i.e. the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard).  To use it you have to have the two computers connected via a direct CAT 5 cable and two network interface cards (NICs) or connected via a null modem cable.  Once you connect the two and run the XP network connection setup wizard, all you have to do is run migwiz.exe and it makes the saving of your settings and files easy.  If this is something you want to consider, let us know and one of us will explain how to go about it.

If you do not want to wait and just want to erase the hard drive now, let us know that too.

...I want to erase the hard drive....

Erasing...so it won't work?   Or erasing...to remove your personal stuff?
Uh, oh!   I am not sure which person I am answering so will answer both on here.

I want to erase my personal stuff, Computer_Commando.

pcdocforchrist, SOUNDS complicated re using Cat 5 cable and interface cards.   I could just see myself hyperventilating.   How about just erasing the hard drive, and I will back up what I think I should - Drive C?

Mucho gracias, amigos (the only Spanish I  know)

At the top of the screen, it says:   Hey, foxygrandma, you have 0 messages.

it would only say you have 2 messages if you recived private messages. It would be cool if it did show any replys up there but it isn't a function of this dear forum Quote
...I want to erase my personal stuff, Computer_Commando....

Everything you have already saved to the CD-R is what you want:  My Documents, My Favorites.  You don't need the Registry Editor, it a program that comes with all versions of Windows.  Hot Mail and Yahoo Mail remain on their respective mail servers and can be accessed from any computer in the world.

To clean your computer of other hidden junk download and run this:  http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

foxygrandma.....Several things......
The new pc you will be receiving ........It has Win XP home loaded ......does it have Sp2 as well ?  Will you be receiving the Win Xp ( authentic operating system disc with it ) ? ..........
Has it had its hard drive erased and then the Win XP home reinstalled and all the Win updates installed .....( Sp1 and Sp2 as well as any critical updates ) ?

Now then the old one ......If you have the original Win Xp Pro disk ( which you have ) . Wait until you get the new one .......then load your saved info onto the new one . once you have everything you want off the old one .......... I would be formatting the hard drive and then doing a clean install of Win Xp Pro ....

You mentioned that you would like to install Win Xp pro on the new one ......( unless there's some feature of Xp pro that you must have , I would suggest leaving XP home as it is ) ........You are just creating a lot of additional work for yourself .

Let us know what you decide .

dl65  Boy, I am sure going to have to learn this site when I have time.   Under each reply, I was looking for an answer button, but only see one under all the replies, so will just reply to all.

Thanks so much everyone.

Thanks, Kablam about the messages reply.

Computer_Commando, I made a mistake.   It is not Registry Editor, it is Registry Mechanic that was installed for me by a computer tech when he was fixing some problems with my current computer in January.  Thank you for the Major Geeks link.

Thanks, dl65.   The new one will only have XP home.   I assume I will be receiving the disk (but I know what "assume" did).   Has it had its hard drive erased?   It will be brand new. Does the hard drive need to be erased?   Do not understand.

What is the easiest way to format a hard drive? Or maybe I should not format it.  Since I am not sure of what I am doing, I do not want to mess up the old one when I GIVE it to my daughter and son-in-law.   I just want to erase any personal stuff on my old one - like what is in my Personals folder in My Documents, and other places on the computer.   I want to give it to them so they will have much more hard drive space than what is on it now.   There is just 3.75 GB left out of a 10 GB hard drive.

Okay, on the new computer I will just leve XP home on it.  Do not need any additional work for myself.   I appreciate the feedack. Quote

Well these are two different operating systems, Home and Professional. So it looks like you'll have to set up the new Home computer from scratch.

You should save your Address book as well. As long as you have ALL the documents backed up you can copy them easily to the new computer from CDRs.

I hope that you will partition the new computer's drive as it pays dividends to do so.

The new computer will have a DELL OEM install using a DELLL OEM XP CD and will likely be XP HOME SP2, if it is brand new.

On your OLD computer you should use AutoStreamer 1·0 to slipstream the old XP PRO SP1 CD together with SP2. This program will produce an .ISO file from which you can burn a new XP PRO SP2 CD.

To erase the old hard drive is then a matter of booting to the new CD and going through the setup routine. Delete the old drive partiton C: and make a new one, then format it. You can then let them do the setting up. Your family member can always add a slave drive to increase the storage capacity.

The DELL 4700 Series can use up to 4 x 1024Mb of RAM so if you found you needed more in the past you might consider adding some more at the outset.

Anna Ruth Uh. oh, here I am again!   Guess I am trying to find the wimpy way out to make it easier on me and my daughter when she gets this computer..

If I delete most of the software that is now on this computer (see Belarc below) and delete all the pictures I have in My Documents (there are hundreds), wouldn't that leave a bunch more space on the hard drive?   I would want to leave the Windows Updates as they take so long to download and to install.  My daughter  can find her own virus software, and she and her husband would never use PowerPoint and so much of the other software.

Please don't whip me with a wet noodle!

I do not think that Dell will set up for free.   They charge a bunch of $$$$.  Think I will be able to do it with the help of a friend who will be visiting from Winter Park, FL in about a week.

I Installed Delta Force 2. after i restarted my computer IT doesnt work anymore
I installed Call Of Duty:UO. everytime i join a GAME then pick a side,it crashes.
My itunes or quickplayer dont work after i restart my computer either.

I done a virus scan and there ISNT anything big enough to worry about. Quote

I done a virus scan and there isnt anything big enough to worry about.

Everything your virus scanner intercepts is a possible hazard and thus, nothing must be dismissed as ' Nothing big enough to worry about'.

Questions:

1. What does your virus scanner find?
2. Why did you restore and not simply format your system?
-- This would have made sure that whatever caused your problem before you restored is entirely gone. Except for the end-user, but he will just have to learn..Morpheus and Msg Plus. which it tells me i am to ignore.
and as for POINT "2" i didnt have this problem before.i could only resort to formatting it because i could not use anything on the computer. All my programs run fine once installed but after restarting it,they dnt work properlyUninstall and reinstall the programs that no longer work.

I would not trust Morpheus.i already did tht but when i reinstall they work fine, its only after i restart computer they bugger up. it happens with every p2p it says file corrupted

I seem to have picked up the lexplorer worm.  I believe it was picked up by my son downloading music. I can only get online through aol although my roadrunner (cable hookup) is still working. My internet explorer will not come up at all and when I hit ctrl alt dlt it shows that lexplorer is not responding.  I have run MCAfee, aol spyware, spybot, and adaware numerous TIMES. The spyware programs each time pick up numerous items but the full virus programs say there is NOTHING there.  My system continuously shows as overloaded and UNABLE to open things (ie mail) but my system shows that I am using LESS that 30% of my space.

Solve : Basic Networking Problems?

Answer»

I have 3 computers; A,B,and C. All are running Win98SE.
A&C are connected through a DSL Router, with an Ethernet cable and an Adapter Card  in each computer (not  USB). B is connected to A with an Ethernet cable and a 2ND adapter card in A , and one in B.
The network is known to A  as consisting of B & C; but from B only A is known, and from C only A is known
I can share files, etc, from A with both B & C. I can share files from C only with A. I can share files from B only with A
How do I make C aware of B, and B aware of C?
I don't believe this is a firewall problem.
TomNo it is not a firewall problem.  Basically your A computer is acting as a router(not a hub) and SINCE you have given it no additional information it keeps the 2 networks seperate.

Now on NT Server etc, you can set it up to pass through the computer.  I don't know of a way to do that on 98 as it was never intended as a server.

Probably the easiest and least frustrating solution would be to purchase an inexpensive hub at your local computer store (some are less than $20.00) and plug them all into the hub which should plug into your DSL router.

Other than that we are talking about static IP addresses with multiple static routes and multiple gateways which can GET troublesome on 98.Connect everything through the router then use NETBUI for file and print sharing.Gussery's reply was about what I expected. I thought it was worth it to ask the question, though.
Because of geographical limitations, 2K DUMMY's solution is not practicable, though I'm sure it would work.
Thanks for the ideas.

Solve : Problems with CD drives in windows?

Answer»

ok. so .

the computer will not recognize the cd rom under a windows enviroment, so simple ANSWER-- " get drivers"

yea, but   1: dont know what kind of drivers i need
and          2:there is another peice of this puzzle

on bootup the BIOS recognizes the CD roms and loads (?)drivers(?) for them, and they will work in DOS.

AND

if i STARTUP windows, log off onto msdos mode, access the CD drives (which work in dos) then RESTART windows, the CD drives work FINE.

so i thought "ill Format! Reinstall! and it will work FINE"
so i formated, reinstalled (from dos, worked fine) but now when windows runs, it finds my new hardware on startup and tries to load drivers from *drumroll* the CD ROM that it STILL DOES NOT recoginize!!

please, does this sound familiar to anyone? is there a simple answer? am i fooked?

Solve : Everything is lost forever, isn't it??

Answer»

I despise Windows. I don't what to do. I was having "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" blue screen problems and figured out how to "fix" it here, but sll that did was ut me a few months into the past. Files I've downloaded in the past few months are GONE(files I've deleted from the past are back). The wallpaper and user icon I had just yesterday are gone and ones I had sometime in the past are back. The driver for my wireless card is gone. I lost everything of recent EVENTS that matters. Months of anything and everything I've done is lost forever. There are no system restore points and no PLACES to return to on the backup drive using Retrospect. Nothing. It's all gone. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever in any way at all. I don't know what to do with myself. It's a hopeless cause, isn't it?...figured out how to "fix" it here, but *all that did was *put...Jacob Gall.......LOL it probably doesn't like you either by the sounds of it .......What Operating system are you using......and have you been applying the system restore in an effort to fix your issues ?

dl65

XP Pro. No restore points.Jacob Gall.......Did you have system restore shut off and more important what happened yesterday ?

dl65  System restore was off because it caused me major problems in the past.

I loaded about a gig of music into iTunes from CD's yesterday.  :-/Have you scanned for:

  • Viruses
  • Trojan Horses
  • Spyware
Jacob,

If all you want is to get your data back, you can mount your disk to another computer running XP (SLAVE it in) then use a data recovery tool to scan the slaved disk to retreive all your data.

Once you are happy that all your data saved, then decide if you want to re-install XP from scratch, then transfere your data back

Solve : Cant install programs on a fresh install of XP?

Answer»

I just build a new computer from parts i bought. I keep getting errors trying to install games and basically anything anything else that can be installed by the CDrom drive. The errors change if i try a different program. I tried a COUPLE of Cd drives and the same errors occur. I treid 2 different installatons of windws XP and home versions and same issue. i dont get it.. if its a hardware issue i dont think i would be able to install windows XP. HELP!!!!! Questions:

1. Does this concern a legal copy of Windows XP?
2. Have you formatted the Hard Disk Drive before (re-)installing Windows XP?
3. What kind of errors occur?

Suggestions:

1. Assign your ACCOUNT moderator abilities.
-- Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Accounts

1: This is a legal copy of XP i am using.
2: I formated the Drive with the Software that came with the drive each time before installing the OS
3: The error changes for every program tried. The most common issue SEEMS to be a corrupt installation FILE but i know the software works from previous installs on other computers. Quote

2: I formated the Drive with the Software that came with the drive each time before installing the OS
3: The error changes for every program tried. The most common issue seems to be a corrupt installation file but i know the software works from previous installs on other computers.

2. What kind of software would this be? Are you referring to a DIAGNOSTIC diskette?
-- I suggest that you format your Hard Disk Drive by using Windows XP as a boot disk.

3. See suggestion at 2.Mostly just game software, but it also happens with norton systemworks 2005.I have also let windows format the drive as well before installation of XP. For one game i try to install i get an I/O error. For BF Vietnam it keeps giving me an cannot copy file"blablabla" file may be corrupt or something along those line. When i get home from work i will post the Actual messages im seeing. And yes that would be the diagnostic software that came with the Hard drive.
1. Have you tested the integrity of the Hard Disk Drive?
2. Do you experience any problems or encounter any errors whilst installing Windows XP?
3. What are the temperatures of your system?
-- You can often monitor the temperatures of your system in the BIOS PC Health section.I am going to check the drive intergrity tonight.
2: there were no errors notcied while installing windows.
3: I dont have the temperature info on. Thats another thing ill look into.disconnet from the net..........then try disabling all the firewalls.....then load the game............>.is the disk scratched/damaged try loaded it in safe mode f8 key on boot....I am recieving CRC errors in instalation of BF vietnam and BF 1942. Solve : new keyboard?

Answer»

Hello,

I am attempting to use a different keyboard than what came with my computer (Dell Dimension 4500) but when I start up my computer the first keystroke I type FREEZES both the mouse and keyboard.  Can someone please tell me what I need to do to use this new keyboard?

(the keyboard i am trying to use is a PS/2 SGI from germany (with german key layout) model no. 6512-BN)

Thanksyour video card does not like the german keyboard??why not change your old keyboard language!i'm very close to doing just that,

however i am trying to find a way to get some use out of the hunk of plastic and wire i just spent my money on

and also the german keyboard has an additional COLUMN of keys that american ones don't and regardless of how i make the layout it will not be the same as the german layout because those keys are physically not there

and i also just enjoy the novelty of having the real thingoh yea, i also meant to add that i know the keyboard itself is fine because when i'm running my computer and plug the new keyboard in it works fine, every feature and function works perfectly.  it's only when i attempt to startup my computer with the new keyboard PLUGGED in that it freezes up.  search makers website for drivers>>http://web.mit.edu/atic/www/tools/techno.html

Solve : DVD on XP...?

Answer»

I'm currently running Windows XP home edition (service pack 2 installed). DVD's have normally played fine for me, but now I'm having a problem with the DVD 'skipping'. Every 40 seconds to a minute it'll jump ahead a few seconds... Needless to say, this gets very annoying.

I have tried several different programs, including windows media player, realone, interactive, powerdvd, etc. All of them do the same thing. I've also ruled out the possability that it is a hardware problem.

I'm stumped... It's always worked fine on my computer, but it just started doing this about a week ago. Anybody have an idea what's going on?atl220....... Have you tried .......completely uninstalling the DVD player .......physically unplugging it .......removing its DRIVERS and then rebooting .........make sure theres no referance to it anywhere and then shut down ..... plug the IDE and power cables back in ....start up and let windows find the new hardware , install the drivers and when you get the message that it has been successfully installed try it and see if it still skips ?

let us know

dl65  Have you thought of cleaning the lense?Thankyou for your recommendations. I felt somewhat stupid having not thought of those things. I did each of them... I cleaned the lense, and I removed the drive completely from the computer, and made sure that the computer had completely removed it. Regardless, these things have not fixed the skipping problem. I have tried several dvd's with it, as well as normal music cd's. The problem persists. That was just me by the way. FORGOT to log in. As a side note, the problem is not only on my dvd drive, it is also on my other drive, which is a cd-rw.Questions:

1. Do you experience other problems with your computer?
2. When has the problem first started?

Suggestions:

  • Scan for Viruses
  • Scan for Trojan Horses
  • Scan for Spyware

No, I've experienced no other problems with my computer. I've run all of the scans you suggested, and they've picked up nothing.

The problem started about a week ago, and has persisted SINCE.Questions:

1. Can you recall what changes you have made to your system since the problem has started?
2. What types of anti-Spyware and anti-Virus/Trojan Horse software are you using?
3. Are you certain it are your CD/DVD drives skipping and not the computer slowing down? Are these copies of dvds??is your sp2 firewall configured?some dvd when played on a pc CONTACT the vendor?maybe the sp2 was a bad install.........did they work before it was installed.

Solve : No Hope Network?

Answer»

I am currently trying to setup a home network. The machine show green lights on both adaptors. The hardware setup is a patch cable with a crossover adaptor. The main computer is running XP home and the secondary computer 98SE. The network does not work on IPX/SPX either. Firewalls are off.

Ping Results:

Win XP Machine (192.168.0.1)

127.0.0.1 - OK
localhost - OK
192.168.0.2 - OK
192.168.0.1 - Request Timed Out

Win 98 Machine (192.168.0.2)

127.0.0.1 - OK
localhost - OK
192.168.0.2 - OK
192.168.0.1 - Request Timed Out
Just for fun, what is your subnet mask on both machines.

It is obvious the XP home computer does not want to play.....Both computers are subnet 255.255.255.0Are these fixed addresses or are you allowing the XP machine to act as a DHCP server? Both are static IP addresses. DHCP didn't work when I tried it.Why dont you slap windows 98 on the XP computer.

or upgread the 98.

is SP2 installed?

Just to clarify that everything is correct, could you please place the output of your ipconfig /all on your XP BOX into this topic?I don't really have access to the machine but I remember the ipconfig output had the local address as ::frioh:029 or SOMETHING like that...

Changing operating systems is not an option.I have a combination of Win98 and XP systems on my home network. They always worked WELL with each other untill I installed SP2 on the XP machine.  Every few days I would have to remove the NIC from device manager and let windows redetect it and then it would work again for a while.  After doing some RESEARCH on forums like this one I swapped the NIC and the problem was solved. Apparently some realtek cards have issues with SP2. Maybe downloading the latest driver would have worked too but I didn't think to try that. Anyway, I don't know what brand NIC you have or if you have installed SP2 but I just thought I'd throw that out there.I should know better,

192.168.0.1 - Request Timed Out, means it does not know how to get there, you need to check the subnet mask, in this case class C: 255.255.255.0 and the gateway, add your main computer's ip address as gateway to itself and 192.168.0.2, it should be able to find the way back.

Know Better:

This is right from the mouth of Gates' geeks:

"Ping the IP address of the local computer to verify that the computer was correctly added to the network. If the routing table is correct, this procedure just forwards the packet to the loopback address of 127.0.0.1. To do this, type the following command: ping IP address of local host If the loopback test succeeds but you cannot ping the local IP address, there may be an issue with the routing table or with the network adapter driver."

You may check it out here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314067

Check the routing table and the NIC driver.

Regards,
DocInfo>>http://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/nethood.html

type the command net in the msdos/ cmd propmt..what router are you using.........??is the isp having problems?Know Better:

You may type the route command at the command prompt (click Start > Run and type cmd and click OK).  Instructions for troubleshooting the routing table using this command are here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/library/ServerHelp/dfc5383f-5ec0-4a0f-96da-acee2da3ac2f.mspx

Hope that helps,
DocKnow Better:

One more thing you might try is the pathping command.  From the XP DESKTOP, open the command prompt window and type pathping 192.168.0.2 and press enter, or type pathping remote host name and press enter.

If, for example, your computer names are Win98 and WinXP, you may see this:

Tracing route to win98 [192.168.0.2]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
 0  winxp.mshome.net [192.168.0.1]
 1  win98.mshome.net [192.168.0.2]

Computing statistics for 25 seconds...

In this case, pathping is more helpful ping or tracert because it shows the IP address of the local host.  If the IP address for the Windows XP computer is not 192.168.0.1, then this explains why pinging that address would not work.

If pathping fails to show the IP address of the local host then i'd recommend checking the drivers for the NIC and also trying the advice posted above by others.

Doc

Solve : Installed SP2, now no internet??

Answer»

I installed SP2 on a Windows XP machine the other day, but now I can't get on the internet. So I decided to unistall SP2. Everything seemed ok, but I still can't get on the internet. I also found out that the computer doesn't have a IP address or a subnet mask anymore. Still h as a DHCP IP, Default Gateway IP, and the DNS IP, but no IP for the computer or subnet. I tried to release/renew, but that didn't work. When trying to renew, it said something like "an error as occured cannot find file specified." Also when SP2 was installed the Security Center service, never started. I went to services, and try to start it manual but nothing happened. It tried to start then errored out saying it couldn't be established. It's running a DSL connection. I EVEN tried to reset the modem, nothing happend. I think SP2 didn't like that machine.

Any Ideas? I need to fix this asap.  SP2 probably took some files with it that you might have needed.... Was it's firewall on block all?

Solve : HELP with a registry error POPUP?

Answer»
I have windows XP and i just cleaned my PC out. After all that work i keep getting the POPUP that says Message service Windows has a critical registry ERROR, to fix the problem go to www.windowregfix.com. And i ran noadware and it found nothing but the popup keeps popping up no matter what i do. It sounds like you have some adware on your computer.
The last place I'd be going to is the one recommended by the popup.
Try http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htmI didnt use the software i thought it was adware so i used my Noadware software and it found nothing.Download and install Ad-Aware (found at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/) See if that removes it.  Do you see anything in Add/Remove Programs referencing that? You can also SCAN your drive for any file containing the text "www.windowregfix.com", and if you feel CONFIDENT enough editing the registry, you can search for "www.windowregfix.com" and remove any keys referencing it.  If you need ADDITIONAL HELP, you can reach me at ResourcePC.

Solve : Problem booting from WinXP CD?

Answer»

I am trying to boot from the WinXP CD in order to do a repair (I am getting the NTLDR not found message). The boot rpocess starts and I get to the blue screen that SAYS Windows Setup at the TOP. Then things freeze and it sits like this forever. I have tried 2 different WinXP CDs and both my CD drives with the same results. Any ideas? Any other ways to fix the NTLDR not found message? I have SP2 installed. Thanks.Verify that there is not a floppy DISK in the drive, that will cause the error too on bootup.  If there is one, remove it.  Otherwise, try the steps below:

Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
When PROMPTED to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.

Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.

Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.

You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.

Copy the file to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "D". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\

Once this file has been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Solve : Help with cd burning on XP?

Answer»
Hi Group,

I am being driven mad with XP.
I liked to click an icon on my desktop to burn with Nero.
I then got a wizard to choose data or music and new or continue cd, also a bar line shopwing how much room I had. I dragged and dropped from ANYWHERE and then clicked the burn icon. wonderfully simple.
XP is determined to make it a bloody awful job.
I have tried and tried to search and get an icon on my desktop to make it easy.
PLEASE HELP.

Best wishes

Dave ELet me get this straight... You want the same shortcut to Nero on your desktp right?

[GLB]Flame[/glb]Hi Flame,

YES YES. As long as it takes me to the wizard and not the long way around that xp wants you to go.

Best wishes

Dave E1. Right click on your desktop
2. New -> Shortcut
3. Click the Browse button
4. Browse to Ahead/Nero/Startmart
5. Select NeroStartSmart.exe
6. Press OK
7. Press Next
8. Name the shortcut (Default is NeroStartSmart)
9. Press Complete

Additional:

If Nero Start Smart is not the PROGRAM you mean, then search through the Ahead/Nero folder until you have located the correct program.

Nero is most likely located in:

C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero

If you have used the default installation path.

Additional two:

Windows XP can drag and drop files you wish to COPY onto the CD. Simply select a file and drag it onto the CD/DVD writer. Then let go and it will be placed in a queue. Right click on the CD/DVD writer to select the option 'Burn files from queue onto CD'.

Maybe a conflict with windows media player......which has burning software embeded in it..........?
info>http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.phpHi,

Thanks for the help.
Windows Media Player burns music fine.
I tried to run Nero Start Smart but it says there are files missing, please reinstall nero. I cannot because it does not show in the add/remove programs list.
The DRAGGING to the cd drive worked ok but I cannot see how much room is on the CD.
Any suggestions will be welcome.

Best wishes

Dave EUnistall nero.............and re-install......if its nero 6 see if there is a patch/or update for it? Quote

1. You may have (accidently) uninstalled Nero. Remove whatever folders and files remain and reinstall Nero.

2. CD's have a fixed amount of data that you can copy onto them. Simply deduct the amount of CD/DVD space by the amount of data you are trying to copy on to it.

Right click on a file -> Properties to see the amount bytes a  file consists of.

Solve : preventing program starting automatically when Windows starts?

Answer»

While using Avast FREE antivirus and Windows firewall, I wished to turn off all functions of ZoneAlarm Security Suite without uninstalling ZoneAlarm.  To do this, I right clicked the ZoneAlarm  icon on the system tray then clicked Shutdown ZoneAlarm Security Suite.  However, when the computer was restarted ZoneAlarm also restarted.

To prevent this, I WENT to the startup tab of the System Configuration Utility which contained a ticked startup item zlclient.  I unticked this but after restarting the computer this item appeared ticked.

I then opened the folder C:\WINDOWS\tasks which contained nothing related to ZoneAlarm.  I then looked in C:\ Documents and Settings\User Name\START Menu\Programs\Startup which again contained nothing to do with ZoneAlarm.

I also opened the text file C:\WINDOWS\win.ini but I do not understand it

I gather that this problem may be solved by editing the registry but I do not know how to do this.

My operating system is Windows XP with Service Pack 2.  The ZoneAlarm Security Suite version number is 9.1.008.000.

The solution to this problem would be much appreciated
1) Msconfig is a diagnostic utility. It should not be used to make permanent changes to startup processes.
2) There is probably a setting in Zone Alarm preferences / options to start with Windows. Check for that option before doing anything else.
3) If you can't find any other way, download and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) and uncheck any Zone Alarm Entries.

However, if you are not going to run ZA, why not just uninstall it? Also, on a totally separate note, you should update XP to SP3.Start Up Cop might be helpful. Trial version.
http://download.cnet.com/Startup-Cop-Pro/3000-2344_4-50213.htmlMike Lin's Startup CPL is Free and not a trial version and would make a far better choice...The ZoneAlarm user interface does include a box to be ticked for ZoneAlarm to start when  windows starts. I missed this when first exploring the interface.  I "unticked" this box and the next time I started my computer the ZoneAlarm icon was absent from the system tray.

Thank you AllanNot the end of the story!  While ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite was apparently shut down, I received a message from Zone LABS, or from its parent company, Check Point, stating that the website I was visiting might be a phishing site.  This possibility is CONCERNING but the fact that the message could be given suggests that ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite had not been completely shut down notwithstanding other evidence that it had been, and remained, shut down.

Solve : computer backup automatically?

Answer»

I bought my Dad an external hard drive to back up his complete computer. I backed up his computer when I installed the external hard drive. He has XP pro. I looked under the back up utility but I couldn't find an automatic backup provision. Is there one in XP pro and if there isn't one is there software I can purchase for him to automatically back up hid system. There is a backup utility, but most USERS don't like it. Instead they use either a free utility or a  product you buy.
The explains the built-in utility.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Back-up-and-restore-frequently-asked-questions
My recommendation, if you want to use it, is to try to backup just a few files, maybe some music. Then experiment to see what happens if you delete a file and then try to bring it back. This helps you UNDERSTAND some of the strange terminology they use. Once you understand it, you can set up an automatic backup.
I recommend Macrium Reflect. Everyone should use Disk Imaging Software on a regular basis. The best of breed is ACRONIS True Image, but it's not free. Macrium is the best free alternative (www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp)Hi

Everybody seems to have a FAVOURITE and mine is Paragon drive backup. There is a free version without scheduler. But both the buy and free version backup in the back ground  and off course can have lots of different images of the computer say Monday Thu to Sunday.  Just google Paragon software

Solve : Need help in diagnosing source of crashes?

Answer»

I'm running XP SP2 on an Athlon. Systems been stable for a long time until recently when I''ve been experiencing 1-4 crashes a day. I get no blue screeen and no message after restart, the system just goes into restart. After restart it's FINE until the next crash. There's no pattern I can SEE. Sometiimes I'm working on it when it crashes but just as often it's just sitting there. The logs just show me stuff after the restart .

What I need help in is how I can narrow this down to something I can work on. The system has lots of stuff attached (firewire, USB SCSI), two displays on an 9600 etc. Where do I start?

Thanks in advance
Bill wdwyer ......Have you added any HARDWARE to the system just prior to this issue starting ?

let us know

dl65  A couple of things - a SCSI interface board, and a new 4 drive fiirewiire bay. Also had one crash bad enough to require an operating system repair which may have mucked up previously stable driversWD:

If you remove the SCSI expansion card and the external FireWire bay and the crashes stop, then you will know the cause of the problem is related to one or the other device. If the crashes continue after removing the devices, then you will be able to rule out the hardware as the cause. Hence, i'd suggest starting there.

One more thing to check: Are both ends of the SCSI bus terminated? If the host adapter is at one end of the bus (with no internal device connected to it) then it must be properly terminated. The external SCSI device must also be terminated. The TERMINATORS are either external or internal (set by jumpers or switches). Failure to properly terminate both ends of the daisy chain will not only cause the system to crash but may also damage the host adapter and the SCSI device.

Solve : Internet changed (slower)?

Answer»

Hi everyone. My internet used to be fairly quick (high speed, cable modem). Then I started using Torrent clients and programs like edonkey (I used them legally). Now that don't use them anymore, my internet goes slower. I have Zonealarm and this is what I observe when I view the traffic monitor: Say I am DOWNLOADING a file or loading a web page with a lot of content. It downloads good for about 2-8 seconds, then completely STOPS all traffic for about 2-60 seconds. Then it starts again.

I HAVE NO SPYWARE! Believe me, I have scanned my computer with every, I mean every, spyware scanner.

I tried internet accelerators, but I figured if my internet used to work fast, why should I have to use a different program to get it back to normal?

I appreciate any help, Thanks!Somebody must know, I know its a tough question. Please,  any help is appreciated.Somebody must know, I know its a tough question. Please,  any help is appreciated.Hey again John... You said you scanned for Spyware, so I'm guessing that you scanned for viruses as well... Made any changes to your system before this happened?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Viruses and Spyware, the whole shmear. I'm clean.

My internet was going slow while I used Torrents and edonkey, but that is because there was a lot of traffic going at once, but now, when both programs are gone and they don't take up traffic, the internet stayed the same. The programs did something, but I don't know what.Well... I should have asked earlier, but how do you connect to the internet?

[glb]Flame[/glb]On my XP computer, through a router, adn then a cable modem. HOWEVER, the same slow process is with my wireless connection (On another computer. I'm starting to thing it might have to do with my router or modem. Do you think I should try to connect to the internet without the router and see if there is a diference? You can try that if you want... First though... Try this... Unplug your modem and router for 30 seconds to ONE minute (also turn off your computer) ... After, restore power back to the modem and router, and turn the computer back on... If it doesn't help, then try to connect to the internet without the router, and tell us what happens...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Sorry, I forgot to mention I did that already too (the power cycle). I should be MOE specific. I'll see what happens with the router/modem thing.Depending upon how much traffic the bitorrent and edonkey generated you may have become subject to your ISP's FAP (Fair Access Policy).  They may have throttled back your upload and download speeds and/or quotas.  It might be a good idea to contact them to determine if this is the case and discuss removing the limitations.

If you call your ISP, ask them to check your phone line as well, to make sure that your phone line is working properly...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Sorry I took so long to reply. The problem wasn't the router. I contacted my ISP and they said they has some minor power loss to my cable modem, called a "yellow alarm." They told me to just unplug my coax cable for 5 minutes and it worked. It is now at around 4.1 mbps rather than 103 kbps.Alright. Another issue solved! Very nice!    Come on back if you have any more trouble John!

Solve : Windows security settings problem?

Answer»

Whenever I try to run certain programs, a small message window pops up with the following - "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded." This has been happening for the last week or so. It happens not only when I'm online and using a browser (I generally don't have a problem with it when I'm online. My primary browser is Firefox 1.0.4), but also when I'm not online. For example, it'll happen when I try to open certain "Help" files. The message also appears when I attempt to run CWShredder. It also happens when I try to use my newsreader, SharpReader. The SharpReader program itself will run, and I can click on a news link, but it will not then download and display the news story in the message pane. Instead, the "security settings" message window will APPEAR. I've gone into "Internet Options" in Internet Explorer and made sure the settings are on their default levels, and have even tried some other, less secure personal settings in case that was causing the problem, all to no avail. I've also done much the same with Firefox's settings. I've checked "Security settings" at MSN but have found nothing that helps. Does Windows have security settings that can be checked for problems? (I'm using XP Home SP2 with .NET Framework 1.1 on a Compaq Presario S4000NX with 2.4 GHz Intel Celeron CPU, 504mb RAM, 40Gb hard drive.) I've lost the ability to use some of my favorite programs, so any help would be greatly APPRECIATED.

ncSkeetRun.......spysweeper from webroot.com.......what happens if you use internet explorer......six.....I don't have spysweeper, but I did run AdAware, Microsoft Anti-Spywar, AVG Free, Spybot S&D, A Squared, and Spyware Blaster, none of which found anything. If I use IE6, it generally works fine, except for one thing - at one time I had IE set to open with no homepage (to open with a blank page), but after I started having this problem it would show the "about:blank" in the location bar, and I would get the  "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded" message, and also a "What do you want to do with this HTML file?" message, to which I had to answer "save" to get it to go any farther, but then I would get the "security settings" message and be unable to use the browser. But after I changed it back to open/start with my previous homepage (Yahoo), IE would start up with no messages or problems and work just fine. Complicated? You bet...Is all your anti virus/spyware stuff up to date?
Some time ago Adaware was seeing 'about:blank' as a bug because there was a bug of that name in the wild.Yep...I manually update it all every day. Here is a direct download link to Hijackthis, see if you can download & run it.

       O20 - Winlogon Notify: igfxcui - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\igfxsrvc.dll               Unknown
Unknown       I ran your logs & got quite a load of nasties, scan again & save the logfile, then go back to the site, browse your computer for the saved file & analyse it at the site.
You then need to carefully read the results and remove the things you're sure are nasty.

I was going to make some suggestions but it's your computer so you will have a better idea what should or shouldn't be there.

I've checked everything out that was listed as nasty or unknown, and none of them are anything to be concerned about. For example, the.dll's checked out as HARMLESS, and the "msmsgs.exe (file missing)" is there probably because I have the messenger disabled. These:

O1 - Hosts: 64.246.62.201 http://www.bootlegzone.com
Nasty   This entry should be fixed immediately!   Must be fixed!
 O1 - Hosts: 207.171.175.35 http://www.amazon.com
Nasty   This entry should be fixed immediately!   Must be fixed!
 O1 - Hosts: 193.86.103.19 guru.grisoft.com
Nasty   This entry should be fixed immediately!   Must be fixed!

are changes I've deliberately made to my HOSTS file. The rest are explainable and not nasty.

ncSkeetYou have good AV programs there but it's horses for courses, can you download, update & run 'ewido', I have had very good results with this when all else has failed.
I still feel it's a virus. Thanks for the suggestion, but I would prefer not to have to download anymore anti-spyware software, particularly something that will disable itself after a few eeks. I'll keep looking around, though...You could uninstall it afetr use.
