Solve : p.c. will NOT boot?

Answer»

hi all
my p.c. was running fine i put roller coaster tycoon 2 in my c.d. ROM double clicked on the rct2 icon on the DESKTOP and the game started to load.
The screen went black and that was that
Now my p.c. will not boot up and keeps returning to the options screen where you can start windows normally or start in safe mode ect. ect. ect
I have tried ALL these options turned off the p.c. waited an hour or so turned it back on pressed f8 had a look in the setup menu ALL with no luck it just will not boot up
Any help gratefully receivedDavid:

It could be a virus (especially if the game was one that was copied and not purchased from a store), or it could just be the software is not compatible with your system.

For the cure to the former, if you don't have XP but do have Me or 98, many anti-virus installation CDs now have the capability to scan the file systems of these operating systems for viruses when the user boots the computer with the CD.  So try that.  If you have rescue floppy disks made with your anti-virus program, give those a try too.

For the cure to the latter, if you have Windows XP then one of the options on the boot menu should be "Last Known Good Configuration."  Try that one.  If that doesn't work, let us know and one of us will explain how to boot your computer with the Windows XP CD and do a repair installation.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,
Docthanks doc
i do have xp home edition (genuine copy)
also the rct2 disc was genuine
i have tried the last known good config option too along with ALL the options on the "windows did not shut down properly screen"
booting from the c.d. and doing the repair installation sounds good to me if you could possibly talk me through it
thanks again
david
p.s. the rct2 game was running perfect for around 2 weeks if this helps anyby the way doc
have also been into the advanced options screen and tried booting with vga and ALL the others listed on that screen my 1st boot device is ide0David:

Right, your only option is to repair installation (and trash the game installation program).  Here are the instructions:

DocThis sounds exactly like my problem, I have tried all of these options in the menu. I recently had a bout with some aurora pop up viruses if that matters. However it has been crushed for weeks now.  PLZ respond, im very desperate as my main pc is now useless and my older brother is hounding me to death about it. :-/

My computer gets to the xp screen with the bar beneath it, then reboots. I get the same screen as the poster. I have posted in other forums, everything from ign, to various forums that barely have a PC discussion area, anywhere that someone may read it. I was downloading a duke.wav sound file for CS:Source when my computer crashed this time. It has happened before but my PC has gotten through it just as the posters has. Quote

Yes, it sounds like you should do a repair installation, since none of the boot menu options work.  Just click on the Microsoft.com LINK in the above post.

Yes, it does.  A virus will not destroy any hardware on your computer, but it will likely destroy software (including the operating system).  Doing a repair installation may not remove the virus, so you should install an antivirus program as soon as you do the repair installation.  Then, download the latest virus updates and run a full scan of your computer.

This is one reason why i rarely download free software from the Internet.  An innocent program or sound file may contain a malicious virus or Trojan Horse.  Store-bought software is the safest to install.

I'm not completely against freeware (AVG Free antivirus, Ad-Aware SE, ZoneAlarm firewall and Eudora Email Lite are excellent free programs).  I just recommend using extreme caution.

Let us know if there is ANYTHING else we may do to help you.  Start your own topic (that way more people may respond).

David, Have you tried booting to the Recovery Console and running: chkdsk /R , to see if there are any faults in the file system?

After two weeks of running this game might you be short of drive space?

You can aso run fixmbr and fixboot from the Recovery Console.Good advice, Mac!

David:

I'd recommend trying Mac's suggestions before you do the repair installation.  If they work, they'll be a much easier fix.

Solve : music cd?

Answer»

Im really confused and I want to know the reason why when I copied a music cd to my harddrive it doesnt play and why the size of a file is 1Kb?

Thanks!Well, at that size it's obvious you didn't copy the cd to your hard drive.   Maybe it's something to do with the cd being "protected" by the producer.

Hi,

Did you actually "rip" CD? (i.e. copy it)

If you try and "drag and drop" or "cut and paste" the CD onto the computer all that gets copied is the CD name, which would explain the small size of the file.

Its relatively straight forword to copy CDS using media player 10, and its a free update if you have'nt already got it.

BenYa I know the process of ripping the cd by using media player.  But did you try what IVE said. Try to EXPLORE the contents of your cd. You will notice that the size of a file is only 1kb and you cannot play it when you TRANSFER it to your harddrive.Ya I know the process of ripping the contents of cd using media player. But have you tried what Ive said? Try to explore the contents of your music cd and you will notice that the size of a song is 1kb. You cannot play it when you transfer it to your harddrive. What did the cd manufacturer do to that cd? Any IDEA?

Solve : Virus got me, help?

Answer»

I am running winxppro. I have adware and Ave running but somehow picked up a virus. My pc just keeps starting and restarting. First I get the Windows XP start up screen, black background, which runs for about 3 mins and then it goes black, After about a minute the screen lights up to blue, icons that look like ghosts start appearing and then they disappear and I have the blue screen with *Security Warning, Fatal error IE0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM<01> + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-SPY. HTML.Smithfraud.com. Then it goes to a Dark Blue screen and reads something like there is an error in Internet Explorer and windows has to shut down...
At the bottom it reads STOP:0xoooooo8E {0xC0000005,0xF9A92459,0XF3793B58,0X00000000}
vdmt16.sys-addressF9A92459 base at F9A92000, Datestamp 427a2a44
Beginning dump of physical MEMORY, screen goes blank and reloads.
I have been able to get it to safe mode with the ghost icons and the Security Warning in the background which reads as above* and a box that has the red round circle with the X in the middle saying that, Error loading F:\windows\sustem32\NVCPL.dll
A dynamic link library (DLL) intialized failed
I downloaded Download s-t-i-n-g-e-r.exe onto a floppy from my other PC and I am trying to get it to run with out success. I will try to connect to the internet with the infected PC to see if I can run it or another virus remover but wanted to get this in here to see if I am on the right track. Thanks!

what firewall have you got??the trojan you mention..is not a trojan.......but a website.have you added any new HARDWARE to your pc.?Searsman:

A. The vdmt16.sys file is from the Backdoor.Haxdoor.D Trojan Horse.  The removal instructions are here:

B. The NvCpl file is likely from the [email protected] worm.  The removal instructions are here:

had same issue eariler in the week.  If you can boot in safe mode w/networking try housecall antivirus, I ran stinger and it found nothing , house call found a ton of viruses and after running it a couple of times it cleared my issue and havent had a problem since

good luck
jayGood suggestion, Jay, and welcome to the forum!

I have used Striker, Adaware, housecall, pc illian as well as both of the recommendations from Doc about manually removing backdoor virus's and still have a problem. My desktop is blue with this in the middle "Security Warning, Fatal error IE0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM<01> + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-SPY. HTML.Smithfraud.com."  I can't change my display at all. It is set at 800 x 600 with color quality set at 4bit. Any ideas?Have you add a new vid/graphics card?/like gainwood. No new hardware or software.reforemate the drive and reload osSearsman:

I did a Google of your error message and this is the result:

http://www.google.com/search?q=Fatal+error+OE+0028+C0011E36+in+VXD+VMM+&hl=en&lr=&start=0&sa=N

And a Google REGARDING html.smithfraud.com yielded this:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=HTML+Smithfraud+com&btnG=Search

It looks like only forum posts (like this one) with no official answer from an authoritative Web site of, for example, an anti-virus software maker.  Hence, i'd take all the answers with a grain of salt.

BlueDaddy's advice to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows may be your best option.  You may lose all your documents and PROGRAMS and etc., but that is safer than doing a repair installation and having the virus(es) or Trojan Horse(s) still present.

If you'd like to take the chance and do a repair installation, the instructions are here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

You may still lose some files or have to reinstall some programs after you try this:

Hope things work out,

When I click on an icon on my desktop, or even an .AVI file in another FOLDER, the file name GETS highlighted (like I was going to change the name of the icon, for example).  Even when I click on the desktop away from the icon, the icon stays highlighted.  How do I stop this? Are you clicking away from a clear area of your desktop? Do this HAPPEN on all desktop icons or on a specific one? How about double-clicking? Refresh your monitor frequently.

Solve : HELP comp is beeping?

Answer»

o.k so i have had comp for a couple of years & the majority it has been fine.it has not however made beeping before & i haave no idea what it is or what to do,HELP PLEASE!!!! it was fine then monitor went black & computer started beeping now ever time i turn it on it beeps & monitor wont work because comp is having a hissy fit so i cant see whats wrong either. i am BASIC on computer so please simple wording if can!!!! tyvm :-)
What make and model is your computer??

How many beeps does it make ?? eg, one LONG two shortGo to the website of your bios provider and check the beep codes. From your brief description, my guess would be a PROBLEM with the video card.To solve the problem fast provide information about your PC's motherboard. Then, according to Allan's advice, you'll be able to find the beep codes and consequently identify the problem.

P.S. If beeps are short and frequent you could have a problem with your PROCESSOR (overheating). However, I agree that possible problem could be with the graphics card, so if you're able to try another one do it. If it works, smth is wrong with your graphics card.

Solve : Windows "pre-load" takes FOREVER?

Answer»

Okay so i built a new comp after my last comp broke, the only thing that remains are the 2 harddrives (western digital, one 250gig one 80gig), 2 gigs of ddr ram, my geforce 5950 ultra, and my SOUND blaster audigy 2 zs pro. Got a ASUS P5P800 mobo with a new intel 620 64bit chip, with 800 fsb. Slapped the stuff together in a new case and all, formatted the main HD and everything was cool. Installed norton, a few other things, everything was fast as *censored* for about... 2 days.

I dont turn off my comp, so overnight RANDOMLY (if it matters norton runs auto every day at 6am) with bittornado open overnight just goes to the CRAPPER. Everything is SLOW as *censored*, to right click took a minute or two, AIM opening i never got to open, took longer than 20 minutes though, task manager opens after 3 minutes and the ram/processor ussage is hardly being used. Just everything is in the crapper, i think memory or processor but i dont see how it could've happened overnight.

So windows repair wont work, says it cant copy some FILE although the cd is fine. I eventually format again, full 50 minutes of watching it format, then install windows. That's where i'm at. When i'm in windows now everything is perfect, fine, no problems (so far, been 1 day)  however when i boot up the computer, the BIOS checks and everything go hella fast, but that little pre-loading bar for windows (the blank screen with the bar that pans across the screen at the bottom) takes about 10-20 minutes to load, then it goes to the Windows XP loading screen and everything goes NORMAL.

Running SP2, all updated to the latest w/ all drivers updated.

I can only pray that in a few days my computer doesnt go to *censored* completely again (at least after the bios checks)

ANY ideas? Thanksboot vis, Defrag... Those are what i would normally recomend but they are to do with moving files on the HD surface so it all runs smoother but is only really needed after you have been using a HD for a long while.

How is your p.c once it is running. Have you damaged the MOBO in anyway? Quote

Try a WD diagnostics diskette. How did you partition and format, using fdisk or using the XP CD?

How have the bytes per allocation cluster worked out? You get 4096?

What is the fragmentation like, lots of red or not?

I guess that you are using AdAware SE, SpyBot SD and SpywareBlaster and remembering that the longer you stay on-line the more chance of hacking or infection. Quote

I used the Windows XP cd.

I defragged last night

Trust me I know about hacking and infection, had my owned computers online 24/7 for 7 years.
OK on the first point, using the XP CD.

If you open a command window and type chkdsk you'll see if you got 4096. If it shows 512 you have a problem.

Was there a lot of red showing before DEFRAGGING?

I have seen drives with 80-90% red which had a problem with the Master File Tables which was causing severe fragmentation and slowing the system down.

Solve : Monitor problems with Windows?

Answer»

I would appreciate any HELP!
Running Windows98 (not 2nd ED.)
Reformatted computer do to GARBAGE from internet.
Everything is fine BUT:
I have a MONITOR I bought a year ago that was working fine with the same OS before I formatted. No hardware has been changed. OS is the same. Now I can only get 2 bits and 16 bits resolution. I downloaded the drivers for the monitor from the internet and no change.
Monitor is an Envision 775e and the computer is a Compaq Presario 2294. The video card is the same one that came with it.

Can anyone give me a clue?????
Thanks
KristyYou need the drivers for your video card, not necessarily the monitor.......

I checked with Microsoft and they do not have any updated drivers for the card.It is just a standard PCI grahpics card. What baffels me it the fact that it was fine before I had to reformat. Everything loaded back without any problems.Look in your device manager under display adaptor and check what drivers are INSTALLED.

<---- Agrees with FED and Gary

Green2:

When you check Device Manager for the drivers for the card to see if there are any conflicts, also write down the full name of the video card and let us know.  One of us will look it up and try to find a link to the site where you may download the correct drivers for Windows 98.

Regards,
DocThanks for your help on this. The only info I have in device manager (and there are no conflicts) is this:
standard PCI graphics adapter VGA
Provider MS
5-11-98
Hardware version: 104
I hope this helps!!!!

Solve : removing ambiguity?

Answer»

Opening My Computer in WinXP-Pro/SP3 can result two POSSIBLE presentations : double-clicking My Computer tends to open it with the left pane being headed by System Tasks, whereas Win E tends to show the pane with Folders.
The steps of my macro to automate the launching of a checkdisk, requires there be no ambiguity. Is there a way of ensuring that Win E ALWAYS results in only the ONE (whichever) view being presented ? Quote from: Sebastian42 on June 08, 2011, 06:24:46 AM

Is there a way of ensuring that Win E ALWAYS results in only the ONE (whichever) view being presented ?

To disable the Tasks view in the Explorer Bar (left hand pane), open Explorer choose Tools, Folder Options, and in the General tab select the "Use Windows classic folders" radio button and then click OK.
I mentioned the purpose of my inquiry - to ensure a consistent response to the keystroke Win E in a macro.  The obvious change that resulted from your suggestion was that double-clicking My Computer no longer shows the Tasks view. Win E was already giving a different result than double-clicking, despite 'show tasks view' not being selected. I just want the result of Win E to be predictably reliable. Did you try what was suggested ? ?I did try what was suggested and found that WinE, which is the only thing I can use in a macro, remained unchanged; but double-clicking on My Computer PRODUCED a result showing Folders instead of Tasks. What I am asking for is a way to lock-in INVARIANCE for WinE. Don't be offencec by the question but what the Heck is WinE ? ?
Or do you mean Wine ? ? Quote from: patio on June 08, 2011, 08:09:13 PM

I was wondering this. The default Explorer mode from Win + E is "explore" (left hand pane showing, set to folders) the location of My Computer. He appears to want this, but appears to be afraid this might change somehow.

Salmon Trout
Correct. I have had the macro fail because of changes in the presentation of the contents of My Computer. It is hard to pin down which changes. Maybe the Folders pane ALWAYS shows when WinE is 'pressed', but I am not sure - and that is why I posed the question. I do have the fear you mentioned. I do know that although only one optical drive is connected, sometimes there is an additional entry for CDrom, but not always; however DVDrom is ALWAYS there.

As for doing the process by macro, of course I can do it manually, but it takes some 10 or more 'repetitive' steps - repeated each time the procedure is done - and in principle computers are tops at doing repetitive work. I do a checkdisk every week, so why not automate it ? Quote from: Sebastian42 on June 09, 2011, 04:47:31 AM

Task Scheduling is an interesting suggestion that I should maybe look at. I THINK a macro gives more fexibility timewise.

Task scheduler can be used to schedule a task to run at a given time each week, each month, each day, every given number of days, every day of a given week, every day of a given month or year, every tuesday and THURSDAY, and so forth. I myself am using it to schedule a backup operation every day at 3 AM. Definitely worth looking into. One could write a batch or Visual Basic Script to run at startup which would, the first time it was run, perform a chkdisk and then write the date and/or time to a log file, and then each time it was subsequently run, check the log file to see how much time had elapsed, and if some trigger period had elapsed, run chkdisk again and write a new entry to the log file, but I agree that Task Scheduler is the way to go.

Quote from: Sebastian42 on June 09, 2011, 04:47:31 AM
Maybe the Folders pane ALWAYS shows when WinE is 'pressed', but I am not sure

So why are you attempting to perform this task by means of a "macro"? (What kind of macro?)

<>
The checkdisk from chkdsk.exe does not do 5 phases, so I want to trigger the one from Properties of the Hard Drive. That involves many keystrokes, which is not native to batchfiles.

<>
I would run the VBS from a batch file. The examples of VBS that I have seen, have not been consistent enough, for me to be able to deduce all the correct steps to achieve my aim.

<>
I do the checkdisk every week, and it involves some ten steps - that is a lot of repetition, which computers are ideally suited to automate.

<> I am using Macro Express [which ALSO has to be learnt - in fact, that crowd has kindly shown me a way out of my dilema while I have been persueing a different aspect here.]  I know other ways are possible, but each method takes almost a university DEGREE to master. Solve : Thumbnail View Pictures?

Answer»

The other day I realized if I change the contents of "My Files" to Thumbnail view I can change the folder icon to a picture representing what's in the folder.

I downloaded pictures to "My Pictures" and for several folders chose photos or other pictures, applying and saving each change.

I don't understand why sometimes a folder reverts to the folder icon.  I haven't yet determined if it happens when I make changes to a file in the folder.

I also don't understand why there's a difference between the ORDER and icon image depending on WHETHER I access a file through "My Documents" and "My Computer - - My Name's" documents.  I ALWAYS log in to the computer as myself.  The only time anything is ADDED to my husband's files is if I log in as him and put them there.  His files are visible to me when I'm logged in as myself.  The only thing in our "Shared Documents" are folders that get generated automatically with Windows (sample pictures, sample video, sample music).

How can I get the icon pictures on my folders to STAY put?

How can I get My Documents and My Name's Documents folders to be the same?

Solve : A minor issue not sure if virus related.?

Answer»

Recently when my computer is left on it seems to lock me out of everything. I am unable to open any NEW PROGRAMS but the previously opened programs (foobar, FIREFOX, game i'm playing) work pretty much the same.
I can open task manager but whenever I attempt to end a process or program it FREEZES then after a minute or two it gives me some sort of error. (Unable to end process access denied something like that)
It only happens after the computer being on for 5-6 hours so a quick reboot fixes it but I'd like to KNOW what exactly is going on.

I thought maybe a virus but it doesn't really sound like one to me but I really haven't had many virus issues in the past.On second thought it might be a better idea to move this to the XP section since I'm pretty sure it isn't a virus.Well decided to attempt to use my xp disk and try a os repair. Gave me a c000021a blue screen error when loading windows. So I just formatted the drive and reinstalled xp.
Problem has gone away not sure what it was but it's fixed.

Solve : Hardware Installation Prompt during "installing devices" Windows XP?

Answer»

So I accidentally deleted "something" from my drivers while trying to free up more space for my computer. I had no idea NTLDR was so important. SO now I tried to repair Windowx XP and during the "installing devices" portion of the restore, a hardware installation prompt comes up and says,
"The software you are installing for this hardware:
SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC.
Continuing your installation of this software may impair or destabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately or in the FUTURE. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop the installation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passed Windows Logo testing.
Do you want to continue installing the software for this hardware?

And I would totally press "Yes" if I could. I cannot, however, since it stopped installing devices halfway through so the keyboard and MOUSE do NOT WORK. I have tried multiple mice, both wireless and usb, it does not matter. How do I get PAST this prompt and/or get this NTLDR back so I can go on my merry way?

Computer is a XPS400 DELL. 1 Gb of RAM, service pack 3, onboard SATA hard drive, I don't really know what the sound and video cards are, but I do know they are the ones that came with this computer when I first bought. I used Norton on this computer. And this is an authentic Windows CD.You've installed incorrect or bad drivers somewhere along the way trying to get something to work...
Boot to safemode...then go to Control Panel and remove any Yellow?? devices...
Then reboot to safemode with Networking...logon to the Dell site and enter your Service Tag # from the machine...
Then DLoad and reinstall all appropiate drivers for your OS...chipset drivers 1st.

Hi, i have 1 xpsp3 pc that has a hp 3310 printer wired through ethernet cable that works great. The printer was added using the add printer wizard and uses the GENERIC windows driver. I have another xp sp3 pc that i want to do the same. The problem is the hp 3310 printer is not listed in the windows printer dialogue BOX? There seems to be a lot more printers listed in dialogue box in the  first pc than the second, How can i FIND a generic windows driver for this printer, or how can i update the list of printer drivers on the second pc, or failing that how can i copy the relavent files from the first pc?? Thank you

I dont want install the "full featured" (read full of bloat) software package, just the generic stuff as per the 1st pcbumpPlease do NOT BUMP it may turn out to be counterproductive to your desire for assistance. Are you trying to "share " a printer if so you will need to set up a network. truenorth Quote from: truenorth on June 10, 2011, 11:58:23 AM

Its either bump or disappear into the ethernet. Thank you for responding. I am not trying to share a printer. I am trying to access a printer with a xpsp3 pc that is on the same ethernt connected network as another xp sp3 pc.
The proble is there is no printer driver listed in the GENERIC WINDOWS perinter driver dialogue box on the 2nd pc as there is on the first pc. As an experiment I RESTORED my 2nd pc to a previous time, and was able to connect it as per the 1st pc because a driver was listed for it. (no the printer has never been connected to this pc before) It is obviously a windows problem because the restored pc has easily twice as many printers listed in the add printer dialogue box. I have tried the windows update under the dialogue, but all it does is duplicate the HP printers listed, that is one lot under HP and a duplication under Hewlett Packard.  Please excuse me but i am having some difficulty understanding your issue re the 2 computers and your printer. As i understand it your difficulty is that you are unable to get proper drivers (generic) on your 2nd computer that will enable you to use that printer? Why are you not either installing the drivers from the printer software or going to the printer manufacturers web site and download the most current drivers for the printer from there? What am i missing here? truenorth

then none of the programs start up and the computer is basically useless.  I can use ALT+CTRL+DEL but thats about it.  This just started and I dont know why so please help me if you know whats going on.  Thanks!!!!!!!

Do you have virus protection?

[glb]Flame[/glb]VALERIE:

Have you tried to disable the program from loading when Windows loads? To do so, follow these instructions:

1. Click Start > Run.  Type msconfig and press ENTER.

2. In the System Configuration Utility, select the Startup tab.

3. Clear the check-box next to init32m.exe (if PRESENT).

4. Click Apply and OK to apply the changes and close the System Configuration Utility.

5. Restart your computer.  When you receive a message that Windows is using the Diagnostic Startup, click OK.

If it is not found on the Startup tab, there are other places you may look where the program may be disabled.  Just let Flame or i know.

Hey, thanks for the info....the startup MENU wont even open though.    so that wont work.   any other ideas??  thanks!!

~vhUse your CTRL + ALT + DEL that will work to bring up Task Manager, then click New Task and enter msconfig in there.

VH:

Do you mean that when you type msconfig in the Run dialog box and click OK the System Configuration Utility does not appear at all? or do you mean that when you click on the Startup tab of the System Configuration Utility, you get an error message of some kind?

If you mean the latter, please WRITE the error message down and let us know every word.  If you mean the former, then let us know if the utility just doesn't appear or if you get an error message after clicking OK in the Run dialog box.  Then let us know all the words for that message.

Also, you may want to try restarting your computer in Safe Mode before you run msconfig.exe.  Let us know if you need help getting XP into Safe Mode.

Thanks!!  I can get to the msconfig box but I can't find this particular program in the startup list to disable it.  I can also restart in safe mode but once I get there I dont know what to do either.  Basically all the programs still will not load up and the same error message comes up when I log on so I don't know how to fix this.

Would re-installing windows help??  Although I have lots of stuff on the computer that I don't want to lose so this would be a sad option.

Thanks for the advice
OK init32m.exe is a spyware program.  Do you have any anti-spyware program that you can run?    If not you need to get one.  In the meantime you could download HijackThis from majorgeeks.com.  It will run from a floppy disk if necessary.  Run it, save the log, and post it hear, in multiple posts if necessary.

I checked out the site and it looks like there's lots of good stuff there, i downloaded the program (from another computer) and put it on a disk as a zip file.  But I can't get to my start menu and when i run a new task in the task manager it wont let me browse my drives or let me open the file on the disk.  so i dont know how i'm supposed to unzip this program and run it except through a back way.   ideas???

THANKS!! Anything??You may need to boot to safe mode[hold down the f8 key on boot and disconnect from the net after loading files to  floppy/disk] to run this ......>>>>>http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Solve : Getting out of Safe mode when not able to get online because of Safe Mode??

Answer»

Okay. Hope someone can help. I keep getting reponses at other places that arent understanding what Im saying. Basically, if I ever tried to start my computer in Safe Mode... I would get the blue screen - 0x0000007b coxf8b0e524, oxc0000034 ox00000000x2 ox00000000x2. This is everytime I would try to start in Safe mode... So I would go back to LAST known config that worked etc and could always get back on... So once ON, I went to msconfig and clicked the box that says always boot in Safe Mode... Since then... I havent been able to get back on AT ALL... It always goes to the blue screen because I clicked the option when able to get on in normal mode to always start in safe mode. Is there anyway that I can ovveride this option in the startup, setup boot menu f8 f2 etc keys? Again I cannot get access to my computer because I clicked this option when I was able to start in normal mode... But again I clicked the box to always start in safe mode, now I cannot get on at all because I clicked this *censored* option. I hope Im clear, because if someone else says press f8 and start in last known config Ima screeeaammm...it dont work. I want to get out of safe mode, somehow, but how can I if I cannot get on my pc to change the option to always boot in safe mode?

Only thing I can access is the setup f2 f8 etc options.. but I have no idea how to navigate that.

Make sure that your computer isn't in Safe Mode by restarting the computer in Normal Mode. Safe Mode can block Windows Installer. Right? My computer wont get out of safe mode...
The Repair Install procedure is the only way I know of to fix this.  Read the instructions very carefully!
BIOS is in Step 1 of the instructions, so I assume you have not read it?When your system first boots watch the screen for a message that says something like: Press ? for bios (or setup). Press whatever key is mentioned. Once in bios, find the boot order. Change it so the cd drive is the first device. DO NOT make any other changes in bios. Click on SAVE CHANGES & EXITHey thanks guys SOO much. Im running into another problem....

So I changed the boot menu etc... I can get the windows setup going finally.... But after it's setting up windows... and I have the 3 options of either pressing ENTER or R for Repair or f3 to leave.... I press ENTER and nothing HAPPENS... It's as soon as these 3 options appear its like my keyboard dies... The light is still on on the keyboard... The keyboard works up until the windows setup with those above 3 options appear that no key will work?? Has this happened to anyone? My keyboard worked fine to change the boot menu... I have to press enter to boot from the cd, I can press any key and hear a little sound while the setup for windows is loading, but after its done, nothing. Cannot press enter to get to the agreement...

Hellp?I think there's a problem with the CDROM drive; or possibly the hard drive.

This would explain the problems in starting in Safe Mode.I see... So theres nothing I can do? Without professional help? Im not a computer wiz... I paint by numbers... smile..??Hey okay... Weird... ENTER finally worked, and I got to the next part , accepted the agreement ....now where Im stuck it says insert CD for Xp. it cant be found-- but its already in there? The cd was kinda old, maybe clean it? It happened right before I left for the net cafe... ?Clean it...don't rub it in a CIRCLE...rather do it from the center out... What do you mean by crushed ? ?Yes, what means "Crushed"?

And, what PROGRAM are you using to (try) to read your pdf files?

If you are trying to USE a very old version of "Acrobat Reader" that may be a problem.

I've circumvented all the problems with Acrobat Reader, by just UN-Installing it and
replacing it with "Foxit Reader".   FR is so much smaller, faster and doesn't bug me
for updates all the time.

Is it all keys or specific keys? If specifc keys, what keys are making what numbers? It is all keys. I got a used replacement for the D-810 and installed it and nothing has changed. I fear it isd something more involved than changing the keyboard.
Any ideas? The replacement I got was another D810 keyboard. It didn't solve the problem.
So, you're saying that every key displays a number ??

What do the number keys do ??I tried the USB ports with a USB keyboard, installed the driver for it and still no change. Number are on the screen when typing letters and when typing numbers, they come up on screen as the number typed in. Very strange and frustrating.
You might check out the suggestions found here: http://computerchimp.com/troubleshooting/keyboard-keys-typing-numbers-instead-of-letters.htmlHere are two ideas to help identify the nature of the problem.

First.  Reboot the computer, pressing the F8 key to ENTER sage mode switch to the system administrator. Does it still show the same symptoms?

Second: Obtain one of the Linux  Live CDs. Perhaps a friend has one. Or burn one from a download.  It has to be a ISO burner and put on a CD-R.

http://www.puppylinux.com/download/index.html

http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=83

You can boot this CD if you BIOS is set to boot CD after power on. One the system loads, you should see and attractive screen that looks different than Windows.  OPEN a console or text editor and see if the keyboard works.

The purpose of this test is to see if the problem is in the system software, or something else. Thanks to everyone who replied to my request for help. I had just added a new anti VIRUS software and changed some setting in Start up. Once I undid the changes, everything works perfect. Solve : F10 system recovery blank blue screen?

Answer»

Hi i hope someone can help. My Moms COMPUTER froze up today so she manual shut it down. When she turned it back on she got the "unexpected shutdown" page but none of the options would work. The computer always takes her back to the "unexpected shutdown" screen. So i told her to try to get into safe mode using the function key, nothing happened. So then I told her to hit the F10 key to enter system recovery. When she does it just gives her a blank blue screen. Is it just really slow in loading or is it also not working? If so any other ideas on how she can recover her system?
She has a  Compaq presario (not sure which version she can't see it on her tower) and is running windows xp home edition

Thank you for your time!!! Did it have any previous issues leading to this problem? It could come from a serious virus infection, any recently installed hardware or software or a failing hard drive. If the computer is unusable, you should look into hooking the drive to another PC via special adapter and perform a complete system scan of any free antivirus, malware and spyware. Depending on the infection, hopefully you'll be able to recover atleast the HD and backup all important documents. You could also run a diagnostic test for your HD but you need to look for the HD description physically for this to perform. My Mom says it happened out of no where, she has had no trouble at all ever...i also asked her if she recently downloaded something or added new software, but she says no she did not.  I am with you on the virus thing but without being able to get on the computer i just don't know.  unfortunately we are not computer savvy enough for all your recommendations although i do appreciate them.
Also my mom lost her job a year and a half ago, so money is TIGHT. i am looking for the cheapest possible solution. That darn F10 starts....why won't it finish? Is there another way to force it to start? Or is there a way to load an anti virus and run it on the computer without actually starting windows?

Thanks for the reply, i need all the help i can get.i think my problem has stumped everyone...lol Does anyone have any ideas on where else i can go for help?
Did you follow atleast some of my suggestions? You can do a repair install with XP. It's very difficult to figure out what is happening third hand. It would be much better if your mother logged on here or if you have the computer in FRONT of you.Jason unfortunately I don't LIVE close to my Mom so i am unable to try these suggestions and she knows next to nothing about computers so I wouldn't be able to convince her to try. Also she only has the one computer. Since this is her only computer she cannot get online to get assistance.Thank you for your help THOUGH.

Solve : "your room's server cannot be found"?

Answer»

Hello,

I really hope someone can help me with this.

I have a new to me computer with Window's 98 SE, which is what I had before on my old system.  However, with the new system, all of the updates were downloaded along with INTERNET Explorer 6 with Service Pack.  I did not have this on my other system.

On my old system I was able to connect with a chat room that came from Hotconference.com, a voice, text, and video room.  I got it from my favorite, safest website. However, now I cannot connect.

I have UNINSTALLED and downloaded, many times.  I tried lowering security features.  I read one of the posts here, and followed the directions for the person who could not get videos anymore, and went to trusted sites and unchecked "required server verification" hoping this would do it, but it didn't.

I can download all updates to the "Conference Room" and I get to the point of signing in and connecting, but I get the message "your room's server cannot be found"

Can you help me at all?

Take care,
Flo

Flo ....have you read this ?
http://hotconference.com/faq.php

Hopefully it will help. Are you positive you have Win 98SE installed and not Win 98 ?

LET us know

dl65  Hello,

Yes, I have been to Hotconference.com and checked everything.  The only thing they say about "Your room's server cannot be found" is that it is a temporary disrruption.  However, this has been going on for two weeks.  I also e-mailed them and I got back"You need to reboot in "safe mode" if that doesn't work, there is something wrong with your computer.

Yes, I am sure I have Windows 98 SE, I checked my System and it shows W98 SE.

I could only think that it has something to do with the upgrades, so I uninstalled all of them.  But that didn't work either.

I was takling to the website OWNER I got the .exe file from, as I know him personally, and he couldn't figure it out.  He did say that it is not an Internet Explorer problem, it is something else, but he doesn't know what.

Any other help would be appreciated.

Take care,
FloHave you any firewalls?Hi,

I don't know if I have firewalls nor do I know how to look for them.

There is nothing showing on the desktop toolbar if that is any help.

FloHello again,

I'm thinking my only solution to the above problem is to clear my hard drive and reload Windows 98, my copy, and see if that works.  I won't have the upgrades but I didn't have them before and everything worked fine.

Only problem being I'm not sure how to do this.  Or if there is an easier way to load my copy of WIN98 SE ove what is already there.

Any suggestions ?

its weird cuz ive never lagged before.. >< any suggestions on what i should do? i'd really really appreciate it if someone can help me fix this lag ^^If your OS has it you could TRY running tracert (trace route) to SEE where the hold up is.>< ima comp noob.. whats OS? and how do you run tracert?Sorry, OS is Operating System, like XP or Win98 etc.
tracert is a PROGRAM that's run from a dos shell.
Try going to Start/Run & typing cmd and click OK.
If you get a black box up, type tracert then the name of the website where your computer lags.
For example tracert msn.com
This will display all the internet gateways your computer goes through to get to that site along with the times in milliseconds. Look for a bottleneck there.
It may throw some light on your problem.
Use Control + C to ESCAPE tracert.
ah, i see, thanks
what do u mean the name of the website my computer lags? when it lags, all the websites lag, including my AIM, online games, etc >tracert onlinegame.com if you get my drift?

Solve : How to install the Windows 98 Search window??

I just do not like the Windows XP search window. I had the W98 one before reinstalling XP and do not KNOW how to get it back. It is the same one that I used when in Safe MODE
Can you please tell me how to get it back?Windows 98 Search:

There is nothing like this built into XP, so I'm not sure what you are referring to, when you state that you used it in safe mode.

You can disable the search assistant thing (dog), though, which makes the search like the windows 2000 implementation:

http://dandar3.blogspot.com/2008/08/how-to-disable-windows-xp-search.html

It would help if the OP would sate what it is that he liked about the 98 that is not found somewhere in Windows XP.
If he wants to use Windows 98 to search his stuff, it will all have to be in FAT32. UNLESS there is a way to get the Win98 search tool to work in XP.

Unless there is a way to get the Win98 search tool to work in XP.

Probably not, I think it's actually part of explorer.

One tool I use occasionally for searching is my program, BCSearch, which I originally designed to try to emulate the Find tool in Windows 98 SE; which can be found here.I do apologize. I mistakenly posted Windows 98 Search view. What I want is the look and features of the one in Safe Mode. It may be the Windows 2000. I will try to take a pic and post it as soon as I can figure out how to go into safe mode.
I don't like having to close 1 window to get to the one I can use. The first window I hnave never been able to figure out how to use it. There is no button or tab to click on to start the search. The SECOND window has the little dog and a start button. I just takes the fun out of searching for me and i do use search a lot.I foujnd pics of what I want but can I post them here from Word Document? If so how? Must I put them in a web app?I unchecked the Use search in classic mode in Explorer and in IE which is down to only the one window now but it still is not the  mode I am looking for. It had to do with an update and Microsoft put out a fix for it.  My friend is having the same problem and I sent her the fix and it will not WORK for her.  The message she gets is "Set up has detected that the service pack version of this system is NEWER than the update you are applying"  I too have service pack 3 on my XP COMPUTER and sucessfully installed the fix for this.. Hope someone can help me SOLVE this issue.
Thank you

Solve : desktop changes by itself??

Answer»

i have a compaq presario pc with windows XP home  SP3,  IE8 and mozilla firefox and cable modem.   i have my desktop display set for windows classic style and 2-3 times a week while the machine is shut down, the screen changes to windows XP style and my desktop icons are scrambled and SOMETIMES even made larger.   i've clicked on the desktop> properties> appearance> windows classic> apply> ok.    then under advanced appearance clicked item "desktop" and the color i wanted.   i also found a place in there where i could lock web items on desktop which i've done and it seems not to make any difference at all.     what can you suggest for me?I would like to see input from other members re this observation. As to whether it could be a contributing factor to the O/P's issue. Would it make any difference if the changes the O/P made (that are randomly changing) if the changes were made from a "user" profile and not from an administrator?. truenorthThere is a Windows service running on start up which is Themes. Try toggling its startup type. Go to Run, type service.msc and hit enter. Look for Themes(which might be set to automatic) and double-click and change startup type to manual or disable. Hit Apply. If you have set your themes to classic, then try rebooting your computer and check the difference. hello.....i typed in service.msn and clicked ok.   the window said THAT couldn't be found.   i looked for a list of start-up programs and THEMES wasn't on it.   i did find a  themes tab on the desktop properties place, clicked classic  and got a sample of what i expect was a default screen in microsoft blue which i didn't want.    oh, well.   any other ideas?i typed in service.msc     not msn.     i lied about that. Quote

i typed in service.msc
Sorry, its services.mscthank you, sir.   i found THEMES.  i changed it from automatic to manual, redid all my settings, and rebooted.   i'll probably not know how it's working for a few days,  but it sure looks promising.   thanks again. If the manual you've set reverted on the following days, then USE disable . And don't call me sir thank you again. Jason.    sorry about the "sir".    it's normal for me to use the word.   i'm a senior CITIZEN and when my husband and i go to a restaurant and the waitress calls us "you guys" i want to punch her lights out.

I'd hit her too...

Solve : hp 512w desktop?

Answer»

I have and old hp model desktop that wont hold much memory to OPERATE. I sticks all the time. Is there any way to upgrade it? Or what can I do to increase the speed? The documentation of your desktop could only hold 512 mb of RAM as maximum.
Quote

Or what can I do to increase the speed?
What speed do you refer here? Are there any specific problems or applications you are running that do not suits your PC? Quote
Or what can I do to increase the speed?
The simple answer is no.
Any answer beyond that is hypothetical.
Or in other words, SOMETHING that might seem to work but has not been proven and may fail.
http://www.memorystock.com/memory/HewlettPackardPavilion512w.html

I don't remember seeing the required information posted
Just a few details, like What OS? would make answering any question about that PC a heck of a lot easier.
Windows 98 will run fine on 512 meg of RAM, Windows ME likewise, but Windows XP, not so much, unless you
do a lot of tweaking and tuning.

If the OS was/is Windows XP, for instance, there has been a pot full of tweaks and tune-up tips listed on
this and other internet forums.  I've even posted them on my own WEB site.

The best thing, after making sure the PC is maxed out on ram, is to shut down all the redundant services
that run in the background and suck up ram and CPU time.  Then minimize the programs that run from the
STARTUP folder (MSCONFIG - Startup).
If you don't absolutely, positively, need something running all the time, then it shouldn't be.  Period!

I've had very good results, getting the most out of old PC's with just 512 megs of RAM.  It's do'able.
Getting all the crapola off of the HARD drive and then defragmenting it, goes a long way toward system
efficiency.  All versions of Windows use the hard drive a lot and if it's all crapped up, and fragmented,
then system efficiency suffers greatly.
* I do this stuff for a living and have for 30 years, so I know from which I speak.

Solve : Old Java installer keeps firing up?

Answer»

Every time I boot the WinXP (pro) pc an old Java installer fires up - GOT instructions from java.com to clean registry, uninstall and REINSTALL offline in a new folder but still no luck.

Would really appreciate any further ideas how to get rid of the thing.

Thanks
/Niilo in SwedenType msconfig in the run window and see if there is a reference to Java. Download Hijack This and run a Scan then check to delete ALL references to Java and delete ALL folders with Java.

Then I guess you'll want to install the latest Java jre-1_5_0_02-windows-i586-p.exe

http://java.com:80/sv/download/manual.jspThank you, God

I'll definitely give it a try and get BACK to you about the result. I haven't tried HijackThis but cleaned the registry using RegSupreme (tried checking MANUALLY for Java references, too).

/NiiloBingo! HijackThis did the job. Superb tool. I DELETED my StarOffice installation as well since there was a Java entry connected to that, too.

Many thanks!

Solve : corrupt this, corrupt that.Is there an end to that??

Answer»

I KNOW THIS POST LOOKS LONG BUT I MADE IT AS INTERSETING AS POSSIBLE SO PLEASE READ IT..PLZ!
As you may know, people do sometimes get corrupted files every now and then, sadly i get corrupted files everyday, every hour, and god knows, maybe every minute.
So I Need your help ppl, your expert opinion on this. Ill TRY to make this as small as possible.
In a nutshell My problem is :ANY Data i put on my pc gets corrupted.
...In paragraphs ...hehehe you thought i was gonna let u go with the "nutshell" thing huh?....
Everything, EXCLUDING MOVIE FILES, that ive been downloading for the past year or so gets corrupted. and around 6 months ago I found out that when i move data around (like installing games, moving big files from my old computer to this computer) they ALSO got corrupted. I didnt know about the 2nd part because i never bothered to actually install any games to make sure they work. Now you're thinking ya his problem is simple ITS A VIRUS!. well Im just a little bit more than rookie in computers so i did my part before coming here.
No its not a virus, so far i formated about 8 times or so. You may think that its my windows thats causing this problem, and i can assure you that ive used at least 3 different Operating systems and I still got corrupted files. You may start thinking that its got to do with some software im using like a download manager or internet optimizer and i can tell u that I use the explorer download manager, and nothing else, becides how could those affect my game installation? they dont get downloaded from the internet but the data comes from my cd-rom or dvd-rom. Now you gotta be thinking that My harddrive is all messed up. well I tried my other hard drive from my old pc, i still have the same problem. Same thing goes for the RAM, I got my old pc's ram and installed it, and that didnt work either. Someone suggested that it maybe a videocard ram issue, i dont see how that could be but i tried another videocard and YEP, doesnt work either. I tried updating my bios, and i didnt c no improvments whatsoever.
Its kinda funny when i go into shops telling them what my problem is and them thinking that i was sent by their boss to see if they knew anything about computers.
But no, im not testing no one here, this is a real problem that i cant seem to figure out, and i went on like 5 different computer help sites and many...and i mean many ppl, shops, technicians who either didnt have time for my pc or didnt wanna fix it or most likly didnt know what the heck is wrong with it
Now there is a "Weirder" part to my problem. the person who i built my computer at really wanted to help me. I had a warranty on this computer and He was putting it to use. He changed the ram and hard drive for me and he also SHOWED ME that when he plugs in his connection to the interenet (T1 connection) he downloaded 4 files ranging from 200 to 500 MB, and they worked fine, they extracted fine. After that he really couldnt help me alot more cuz he saw nothing wrong with it. Now I stopped going to this guy BEFORE my "installing corruption" happend. I never bothered to go to him cuz my warranty was over.
So i am basically in ur hands guys. i cant afford to buy a new computer and i am sure there is a way to solve this
So just to make sure u got everything right:
1)Any data that is copied onto my hdd gets corrupted
2)Changed many things in it and that didnt work
3)I can assure u, there is no virus on my hdd
4)I do not believe there are programs that are messing up my files
5)It is most likly a hardware issue, but WHICH
PC:
intel p4 2.4GHz
512 DDR RAM
DVD-ROM
CDRW
Ati Radeon 9000pro 128mb ddr ram
ECS P4VXASD2+ Motherboard
SoundBlaster5.1 gamer
If I missed anyting ask and ill answer
Please Respond to this post, dont just look and go on to another one. give ur opinion or whatever u have to say about this. Anything can fix my problem
hard drive ........have you run disk check....scandisk.....its possible that you have a boot sector virus.......try another brand new hard drive.....I did say i tried another harddrive.
That didnt work
becides i usually Install operating systems and download stuff right away..so there is no chance of things crashing or programs messing up my harddrive
Im pretty sure that it is not the hard-drive. Dont u think using my older pc's hard drive is good enough? if u think that getting a brand new harddrive will solve this, then plz replytry a scan ......>http://housecall.trendmicro.com/   and disable the system restore feature..  i reason i said try a new hard drive because if the hard drive ......had bad sectors/blocks or boot sector...this would cause corupt files< do any of the hard drives clonk or  make usual nosies> also...if you have also used a floppy boot disk or ..it also may contain a  bootsector ....virus...try the above first.....and re-check your software by getting the anti-virus program to scan all disks.....dvd/cd/fd// before loaded them....You probably have a boot sector virus.

But I can't help you.

Try to look on the internet for a good online hard-drive scan. I think merlin posted one in this topic.

Jacko

What percisely do you mean by corrupted? In what way do they not work?K well its nice to see ppl actually thinking about my problem here
k first off lets get the main topic straightened out. I have 2 computers, i have the problem with the new one, NOT the old one. I download fine on the old one, infact all my UPDATES, game demos and other files are downloaded on my old pc and then transfered to here through a network (usually i have to transfer them more than once cuz the first time i transfer the files onto this pc the files are most likly currupted). I am still going to try the website u sent me and ill post the results.

2nd thing..I have a virus scanner (as i said in the begining   ) and i cant find no boot sector virus. but ill still do the online scan thing.

3d thing for Niel and everyone else who is still confused about how the files get corrupted. Lets say we have a zip file with 10 files in it. lets say i extract the files and file #3 is corrupt. I download that same file again and i try to extract the 10 files. NOW its file #7 that is corrupt, #3 extracts fine!. its not always the same file that gets corrupt. it happens randomly out of nowhere[/u]. So when try to install a game for example, sometimes the game says there is a sound file corrupt, then the 2nd time i install it says there is a Texture file corrupt, and so onBTW, if i formated my hard drive, doesnt that get rid of the virus? cuz i said in my first post that i formated like 8 timesK I scanned and did not find any viruses on the housecall website.ArabGuy.......LOL......your post is soooooo funny.
First , please state your o/s ....... Then please enlighten us as to which anti virus program you have installed and presumably working on the pc in question.
Now then.......perhaps you would be so kind as to define the "Corupted Files " phrase you keep using . Please provide an example for us ......

dl65

dl65, thank u for the comment. I know ppl dont like to read and i know that my post was gonna be long so i made it as interesting as possible.
So back to business. I am currently running windows xp Pro. I Also tried my problem on windows 95, 98 SE, WinME, Win2000.. non of them work, so win xp is not gonna be any better

My Antivirus Is currently (and the only one i ever used) norton antivirus 2003

I just scanned also using a website a person posted it 20 mins ago (no virus found)

My corrupted files i kinda explained the post above and im pretty sure u missed it but here it is again

So when try to install a game for example, sometimes the game says there is a sound file corrupt, then the 2nd time i install it says there is a Texture file corrupt, and so on

So basically all types of data (from exe to rar to bik to rom to iso to etc. etc.) EXCEPT movie files (avi, mpeg, mpg, etc) gets corrupted (as in windows cant open it, as in BIG RED X SIGN lol ,).

Now im not sure why movie files do not get corrupted, but i think they do in a way but Media players just can bypass the corrupted info and replace it with something else. im not sure im not that much of an expert to say anything.
ArabGuy...So if I understand you........its only files which you UNZIP which may become "damaged".........
What program do you use to unzip these files ?

"EXCEPT movie files (avi, mpeg, mpg, etc) gets corrupted (as in windows cant open it, as in BIG RED X SIGN lol ,). "  What do you mean a big red X ? Dont you have Sun Systems java installed ?
WMP........will open those AVI files

Re your Norton 2003 AV ..........what is the subscription renewal date displayed ?

let us know

dl65
Basically ur right, mostly they r zip files (because most files are now zipped) i use winrar and winzip
what i meant about the red big x sign is the error message where it says something like "The installation file you are trying to run is either damaged or corrupt, please optain another copy"

also u know how in winrar if there is a corrupt file it will tell u what file it is and so on, thats also part of "the big red x"

i just used that as an expression..Oh and about the nav, the subscribtion is not old, i just formated a couple of days ago and i installed nav when i installed windowsArabGuy......So whats the subscription date on your Norton AV......?

Solve : DVD Soundtrack?

Answer»

Hi,

Is it possible to use windows MEDIA player to lift the soundtrack off a DVD?

Ive got a music related DVD and I'd like to be able to transfer the soundtrack to either a CD or MP3 player.

If media player cannot do this, is there a piece of software that will?

THANKS,

BEN  Media player will not do it for you.  There are tools that will allow you to lift the entire audio off a DVD but then you'll have to edit the file to SEPARATE the music and you'll still have the overlying MOVIE sounds so it wouldn't be worth it.

I recommend downloading the soundtrack instead.

Solve : Install XP Home... Question?

Answer»

Hi! I have a question about Windows XP Home... I have the full version CD, but I have used it once on my computer already... I fear that I need to erase hy hard drive again, and I still want XP... My questions is... Will my XP CD allow me to install XP again on my computer, or will the security device stop me?

Thanks!http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/evaluation/features/activation.mspx[email protected] you are simply formatting your existing pc to clean it up and wish to do a clean install on the same pc ......there shouldnt be any PROBLEMS , with either registration or activation . However if you made significent hardware changes.....  ie a new motherboard (a totally differant one )  ....then you may have problems activating XP again ........If that were to happen you can telephone M/S and explain to them that you have had to change the mobo so your hardware configuration is differant . They will activate it for you or certainly tell you how to .

Hope this helps

dl65  Hi guys. Thanks for the information! I haven't made any hardware changes, accept for the time when I TRIED to upgrade my video card... It wasn't compatible, but I thought it was... (BIG mistake)  The drivers got messed... That's about it... OH. I also added more RAM, for what that's worth... Nothing else... Just to clear it up... I used that CD to install XP on my computer about two years ago.... Now, I want to use the same CD again to avoid paying so much... (on the same computer),,, I just want to make sure that when I fdisk and erase everything, that the CD will still install for me.... You think that it will work?

[glb]Flame[/glb]You shouldn't have to use fdisk just boot directly to the XP CD and do all of your PARTITIONING then format drive C:

You can format the other partitions USING XP's Disk Management.

Does the CD have SP2? If not you can slipstream the SP2 service pack using AutoStreamer 1·0 which will make you an .ISO file from which to burn an up-to-date XP SP2 CD which means a lot less updating to do.
