And, what PROGRAM are you using to (try) to read your pdf files? If you are trying to USE a very old version of "Acrobat Reader" that may be a problem. I've circumvented all the problems with Acrobat Reader, by just UN-Installing it and replacing it with "Foxit Reader". FR is so much smaller, faster and doesn't bug me for updates all the time. Crushed?
