Solve : Problem with digital sigs?

Answer»

Basically, this is my problem:

I downloaded Microsoft Reader, but when I tried to activate it a box popped up that said I couldn't because the digital sig could not be verified. My knowledge of computers is very basic, and I have no idea what to do. Is there a way to override this?

Someone suggested to me that Norton was the problem, and that I should uninstall it until the Reader was activated, which I did, but it didn't help at all. Next I was told that the problem was that I am not the administrator (which I've had problems with before as I can not even CtrlAltDelete because of it). Again, I have no idea what to do about this.

I have Windows XP, which was already installed on my computer when it was shipped to me. All I want is to be able to activate the Reader.

Anyone know what I can do about this?Emma:

Did the warning message say that the driver that was being installed was not signed by Microsoft, or did it says something else?

This is the message I'm getting:

AOL Security Warning
Windows had found a problem with this file
Name:DASAct.cab
Publisher: Unknown Publisher
This file was blocked because it does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher

That's the extent of it. And the only help it provides is in giving me a definition and reason for digital sigs. Can you not simply configure the AOL security software to accept the program you are trying to install?

Or disable AOL security for the time being..

I assume that AOL security is some kind of firewall and/or virus scanner? Quote

ALRIGHT, I did that, and it says that I'm the administrator. However, when I try to download CERTAIN files, or even CtrlAltDelete, it tells me I'm not the administrator.

Solve : Counterfeit Windows??

Answer»

I've been using Windows XP for months on my HP Pavilion PC. Suddenly, when powering-up, I get a message saying that I might not have genuine Windows but a counterfeit. I am afraid to follow the steps shown to verify if I have the actual Windows. I think it could be a scam or a virus. Has anybody ever had this message before? Should I do the verification? Quote from: Myron on May 28, 2011, 03:19:38 AM

I've been using Windows XP for months on my HP Pavilion PC.

Where did you get this Windows XP from ?? Was it always on your PC ??

Can you post a screen shot ??

But just letting you know, if it is a pirate copy, we will not help you here. What steps does it ask you to take?

Did you recently have the computer shut down unexpectedly, due to power outage or turning off the computer before shutting down Windows? What is the EXACT message you get?I read something online a few years ago about pirated copies of XP showing up on ebay etc. The tell tale sign of these were some unusual batch files located in the root of C:\ that bypassed the requirement for activate against microsoft. It wasnt until a user tried to get updates and it tests for it to be genuine that its detected as pirated.

Look at your C:\ drive in the root of it for batch files and post back if you find any and their names. I think one was named key something or activation.Tons of info here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/genuine/faqI believe this is micrososft's work. I think they want you to just upgrade to window's 7 and they crash Xp for you. When window's Vista first came out and my window's Xp computer crashed I went on Microsoft's website to order a window's XP Cd. I bought a copy for something a little over $100. (can remember the full price) Microsoft stated that the disk and all manuels will arive in 2 week's time. Anyways the funny thing is this was a disk straight from Microsoft and in 2 years time after the release of window's 7 it also gave me the genuine error. How is it possible that a disk from Microsoft isn't genuine? It must be a big scam in getting you to upgrade to 7. I got mad and called microsoft and they said they couldn't do nothing about it for window's XP is outdated and they told me that buying window's 7 would be a better investment. I believe this is micrososft's work. I think they want you to just upgrade to window's 7 and they crash Xp for you.
Utter nonsense. The only time I've ever had trouble with getting Microsoft to cooperate on a key for an operating system was for a used / laptop I bought from a store. When it crashed, it was a three-way finger-point between the manufacturer, the vendor, and Microsoft. (That laptop then ran Ubuntu Linux until it died.)

Any other time I've called Microsoft with questions, or help with registering or re-registering a legitimate copy of an operating system, or with a legitimate key, I've never had a problem.

Microsoft may date the official support of an operating system, but they are not in the business of causing operating systems to fail in order to force people to upgrade. Quote from: Aegis on May 31, 2011, 08:09:45 AM

No. That doesn't make any sense at all.

I don't think you've ever been ABLE to do that; except via dreamspark, or more recent windows versions. Windows XP was only available at retail (and thus also downloadable via internet retailers) I don't believe you can order a Windows XP CD from MS. I'll humour you for now THOUGH.

Quote
I bought a copy for something a little over $100. (can remember the full price)
Why the *censored* were you buying a NEW copy in the first place, anyway? If your XP computer crashed, you contact the manufacturer, or use the recovery disk that came with said computer. you don't just go buy a new OS CD, that's stupid, and makes very little sense.

Quote

err.... what? What is your point here? OMG! 2 years after Windows 7 was released it gave you a WGA error? What are you trying to say here? They both use the number 2 so it's some kind of conspiracy? Any number of hardware and software changes can trigger activation/WGA, and one phone call fixes it, despite what you claim.

Quote
How is it possible that a disk from Microsoft isn't genuine?
It's not. The software that get's installed can be made to believe it isn't a legal copy by:

-being installed on another machine from previously
-general "overtweaking"- you mess around with system files and patch things and then wonder why WGA fails...
-malware - malware often sets it off as well.

Quote
It must be a big scam in getting you to upgrade to 7.
Sure it is. Or, you could just phone MS and reactivate it the long way.

Well, you must be a Time Lord because 2 years after Windows 7 was released is October 22, 2011. So you could get in your time machine and go back to a time when your XP was still genuine

Quote
How is it possible that a disk from Microsoft isn't genuine?

The disk was, is, and will continue to be genuine. Something about the installation it made on your system has possibly changed or maybe there was an error caused by malware or messing about as BC_Programmer said.

Quote

How very foolish. Anyhow, Windows 7 is a much better OS and has the advantage of not being nearly 10 years old.

Quote
So i just re-installed my FULLY GENUINE FROM MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP PRO!

Well, bully for you! It is not from Microsoft. But if the OP thinks it is, he can call MS by phone and talk about it.
There is a new wave of virus or Trojan things out there that pretend to be from Microsoft. Only in the far east was MS hostile toward any suspect copies of Windows. In the western world you could still use windows even after that message, It was 'nag-only', not 'find and destroy.'

Do not do the verification. Try to boot in safe mode. It is a scam. You need to scan the scam. If you can not boot in safe mode and by-pass the message, get a CD that can boot and run a scan and find the scam.

Solve : Use of scannow for my situation???

Answer»

Again I looked AROUND, but didn't see a SIMILAR thread....

Trying to UNDERSTAND what value that the use of scannow can do ME (ie, my special circumstance)

This PC: HP Compaq with XP Pro SP3, "up to date".

This was an OEM install of XP - ie I never had any XP Pro Recovery disc or CD or any discs/CDs of any description.

The PC is running "OK" (except for OE6) right now.

Here's the backstory: My PC wouldn't reboot (looong story...much searching/learning/pain/brain damage and wandering into unknown Linux territory)

Ultimately I saved my files from the unbootable PC to a USB drive via a bootable CD.

Then burned a bootable CD of my i386 files (with slipstreamed SP2)

Then did a repair / in-place upgrade process that TOOK me back to SP2 but had all my data intact (ie internally and in addition to my saved data on the USB drive)....this occurred last week...

I have now updated (again) to SP3 and all the MS updates (I think). Again, the PC is running "OK" (except for OE6) right now, and there have been no new crashes / non-boots etc.

If I now run sfc /scannow, it prompts me to put in a CD....but the only CD is the one I just used....so what good can scannow do me??

Any other ways to accomplish what scannow generally does??

Not that I know of. You need the files that are on the XP CD.

Are you saying that the problem with outlook express only happens after you install service pack 3? Quote from: JJ 3000 on June 03, 2011, 09:41:52 AM
Not that I know of. You need the files that are on the XP CD.

Yes, ALTHOUGH the i386 files are purportedly put in these OEM machines to serve the purpose of the XP CDs....at least to my limited understanding. If so, and if no one or no virus etc previously modified the files, they are as "good" as the XP CD (even if not as accessible)

Quote from: JJ 3000 on June 03, 2011, 09:41:52 AM

No - I didn't try to use OE6 in SP2. (I do have a separate OE6 thread, but this "try it in SP2" isn't there)

I don't THINK there would have been any difference. Pre-non-boot - the PC was SP3

Thank you.

There are references to making a OEM disc from files on a per-loaded PC.
Google how to make HP OEM XP CD
IMHO, you don't need to use SFC at this point. Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 03, 2011, 10:10:35 AM

OK - that's what the line in post 1 was hinting at, "Then burned a bootable CD of my i386 files (with slipstreamed SP2)"...

I was just exploring (!) scannow to see if it might help me at this point, with my OE6 problem. Conclusion: probably not. Problems with OE6 are common. But EO6 is the most widely use e-mail program. Here is just one of many links that deal with it. This one seems to be a little better than the rest.

Solve : About Sharing on XP?

Answer»

hi,
I use Windows XP Professional, SP1. I have a problem related to disk sharing. My C & D DRIVES are somehow automatically shared. It didnt happen before. I noticed this a couple of days ago. The drives are shared with a $ sign suffixed and I cannot access/change the permissions. I tried "Do not share this folder" option, but after I click ok, it shows a message that says that the drive will be shared again the next time (something like that). Can anyone tell me why this is happening. I don't want to share any file/folder on my computer. Recently I installed MSSQL Server 7. Would that have to do anything with this? Somebody please help me out here.
Thanks.
C$ and D$ are automatic shares created when XP is installed. They are adminstrative shares so you have to be at least a local administrator to access the PC through these shares. The $ sign indicates they are hidden shares and do not show up when a computer is browsed.

No, you can't remove them like a normal share. If your local adminstrator(s) accounts are locked down with good passwords, etc. then these shares are not a problem. If you have blank passwords or easy to guess passwords then you are leaving yourself open to attack.no, but it wasn't shared before. neither of the drives were shared.it just happened a couple of days before. and i cannot understand how.HJP:

Gary is right. It's also a good idea to change the name of the DEFAULT administrator account to something you will remember, like THEMAN. This way a TROJAN Horse that, or a hacker who, tries to take over the account may be thwarted.

To change the name of the administrator account...

1. Click Start > Run...

2. Type secpol.msc /s and press ENTER.

3. In Local Security Settings, click Local Policies to expand the tree and click Security Options.

4. In the right PANE, right-click "Accounts: Rename administrator account" and select Properties.

5. In Accounts: Rename Administrator Account Properties, type a new name for the administrator account in the textbox and click Apply and OK.

Regards,
Docok, i changed the name, but does that really help? and how to set local admin password? is it the same one that i use for login or is it different? :-/HJP:

To change the administrator account password...

1. Click Start > Run...

2. Type lusrmgr.msc and press ENTER.

3. In Local Users and Groups, click Users.

4. In the right pane, right-click the administrator account (it should have the new name you just gave it) and select Set Password.

5. In Set Password for Administrator, type the password in the New Password textbox and retype the password in the Confirm Password textbox, then click OK.

I'd suggest using a password that is easy to remember but that contains at least one number and one special character. For example: Pa$$w0rd (where $$ is substituted for the letters ss and the number ZERO is substituted for the letter o). The passwords are case-sensitive.

If you are not worried about someone at your home getting the password, write it down and put it in a safe place (such as on a mailing label inside a desk drawer where it will not get lost). Windows XP also gives you the option of saving your password on a floppy disk.

Regards,
Docok, i found on net how to disable the administrative sharing. now, about that local admin password, i found two admin accounts there. the one is with my computer's name i think, and another one is the one i just renamed. oh, and first one's description column empty, but the second one's description says "built-in account for administering the computer/domain". is that okay?

edit: when i tried to set password for either of them, it showed a warning, saying that changing the password might cause loss of data. HJP:

Right, the warning states, "Resetting this password might cause irreversible loss of information for this user account... ." It's simply telling you that if you change the password and forget it, then you will have to forget trying to log on as that user. (In other words, make sure you don't forget the password!)

You should set a password for at least *every* administrator account on your computer.

Regards,
Doc

Solve : Downloading DirectX 9.0 Win XP HELP!?

Answer»

I'll TRY to make this short. I currently have Directx 8.1 on Windows XP Professional. Want to run a new game that needs DirectX 9.0. Have tried downloading complete DirectX 9.0 - Redist from various sites. When the "Install to" BOX comes up the box is blank. Most downloads automatically point to the correct directory to install to. Where do I need to install DirectX 9.0 on Windows XP Professional. On my Win98 SE, DirectX is installed in Windows/System. When searchhing files and folders on the XP I have about 10 items that come up (possibly half or more from failed downloads). It looks as if the current copy of DirectX 8.1 may be installed in Windows/System/Win32. Can someone PLEASE point me in the correct direction. What destination goes in the blank "Install to" box? I read somewhere that if a program requires a HIGHER version of DirectX it will be INCLUDED with the game. I am on the verge of making a trip to Wal-Mart and reading all the fine print on the program boxes for one that includeds the DirectX 9.0 upgrade. Please help!Have you tried going to windows update?

Solve : MSN Messenger 7?

Answer»

Hey everyone! I've had Messenger 7 installed for weeks now and it was working fine until two days ago. Everytime I log in it disconnects and says that connectivity has been lost and shows a countdown. I've tried deleting it and installing it like 3 times now, I cleaned the computer, shut down the firewall and still nothing. I don't know if it has SOMETHING to do with the proxy settings or anything. This only seems to happen with IM programs, but AIM seems to stay online longer than MSN. The internet in general works fine. What do you guys think is happening?

Thanks!

~MYou said that AIm stays on "longer" ... This means that AIM will eventually cut off too?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I have a similar problem. It often wont connect, but instead of giving a message to explain itself it just carries N showing the two men spinning infinitly. I havnt been able to sort my problem but have found a site that has solutions to other PROBLEMS with msn 7. The ADRESS is http://www.msn-problems.com

Does it give any sort of ERROR code at all.

Solve : Building an Intranet??

Answer»

Hi everyone! I have made a decision... I rely on the internet for too much... For my address book, etc... I want to build my own Intranet... I will be making a home network in about a month or so as well, which is why I want the Intranet... Now... I have website design software, but how do I create the Intranet? Anything I should know? Specific file names? Locations? Other? Thanks!

[glb]Flame[/glb]Sorry... FORGOT to add.... I want to not only be able to view information, but also make changes... Ideas?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hey Flame, couple sites you may want to look at:

http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/intranets/
http://

http://www.comedition.com/Business/Intranets/buildingintranet.htm

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/779/smbiz/netsolutions/find/alice/intranets/i5.html

There's lots more but these will give you a picture at least. The last has some alternate resources.
Hope this helps.
jimThanks for the LINKS! I'll have to look deeper to get the full effect...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Do you want a Home Network or a Home Intranet? I think you probably want a Home Network.
http://computer.howstuffworks.com/home-network.htmBoth actually... I will need the network, becuase my new new addition (coming soon), and the Intranet would be good, becuase it would make it easier to view my files on another computer... You SEE, I don't want really to have just a collection of files shared... I actually want to have an organized page, which would work by you clicking on the LINK, and it displays the information... I don't need the original program that it was made with to use... Basic...

Solve : Windows XP operating system. Hard drive is mapped as I. Want to change to C?

Answer»

For some reason, the hard drive on my system is marked as I and not C, and this does not work well with my automatic backup system.
How do I change my drive letter to C? I WENT to management where it lists the drives and I tried to change it from there but it wouldnt LET me, says Boot volume cannot be reassigned. So what should I do?You cannot change the drive letter designation of the system partition with reformatting and reinstalling the OS. I'm guessing when you installed the OS initially you had other usb devices / drives attached. You can't do that. But how do you disconnect the other peripherals that are built into the computer like a card reader or a lot for an external drive and stuff.

If I do need to REINSTALL the OS, let me know what I should do so the hard drive willl be mapped as C:

You don't need to disconnect the INTERNAL drives such as card readers. Boot to the Windows disk and early on you'll be given the option to delete and recreate partitions and format - choose that option and do the obvious. Make sure when you reinstall you install to c: drive.

Solve : Can These Download Files Be Deleted??

Answer»

C:\Documents and Settings\TEMP.MY NAME\My Documents\C Drive Laptop Folders\My Documents\All The REST of the Laptop Folders\More My Downloads That Need Sorting

On previous occasions, while trying to tidy up my hard drive I found a folder labeled "Downloads" and renamed the folder so I would recognize more readily what it was as I purged other folders. I don't remember if I intentionally moved anything to the folder or if everything was put in automatically when the files downloaded.

I've been afraid to delete anything from the folder because some of the files have the fancy icons that come with games and services. The icons make the files seem important, but the address line says all the files are TEMP. How can I tell if I actually need these files or if I can delete them?

The non-fancy icons, such as "Word" or a pdf file are in black print, the fancy icons that are logos of the games or services/products ("DREAM Day Wedding", "iTunes", "Adobe") are .exe files in live-link blue print.

For the most part I want the games and need the Adobe products. I don't use Symantec anymore and don't use iTunes, so I could experiment, if needed, with those .exe files.

Without an actual screenshot of the folder and it's contents and/or what you have moved there we cannot safely advise on what to do here...

I'm still hoping for an answer - the question is, once you have installed something on your computer it still shows up in your list of downloads. If you delete something from the list of downloads, how do you know in ADVANCE that you're not actually deleting the thing you installed? As a rule, anything in your temp folder can be deleted. Easy way to be sure is to create a new folder and move everything there. Then reboot. Everything okay? If so, delete the new folder and all contents. What worries me is 1/2 of them are .exe's...
How or why he moved all this stuff has yet to be answered... Quote from: Starwind51 on June 04, 2011, 12:48:41 PM

how do you know in advance that you're not actually deleting the thing you installed?

If it's an installer, running it installs the program. The installer then becomes vestigial... especially in the CASE of most INSTALLERS since they get cached by Windows Installer in a special place for when you need to Add/Remove/repair them.

Otherwise, in the case of some programs it's NOT an installer and is instead the actual program. Everything in that folder is a installer or setup program except for the symantec removal utility.

Please help. My neck is breaking because I accidentally turned it horizontally and ccan't change it.what video card manufacture you haveWelcome to the CH forums.

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Rotate+screenI don't KNOW anything about the video card just that it is Windows XP that I am using on a HP vavilian a705w. Where can I find the information. Thanks. You didn't say what operating system you have. The LINK that Dusty posted works for XP, but does not work in Win 7. In Win 7 you need to go into display settings and you can change it there.

I think MS changed it from XP to Win 7 because so many people accidentally hit the wrong keys and ended up with the screen you have now. I've heard stories of cats working across the keyboard in XP and changing the screen.GOT THE ANSWER! THANK YOU. After looking at all of your comments I ended up right clicking the desktop screen. When it opened up, it opened up to Graphic options. The window then opened up to rotation options that INCLUDED 90%, Normal, etc.

I hit normal that had a picture beside it of a normal vertical screen. THANK YOU. I am up and running. I will stick with this forum.

Operating system?
What are you trying to access?
How?
Are you the ADMIN?I am admin, I try to access anything such as Internet Explorer, any programs on Start menu. There is maybe a clue---I go to IE icon, get the message about no access then I right click and open Run as where I uncheck the box that says Protect my computer and data from unauthorized PROGRAM activity. After doing this, the IE opens to the internet. What is Operating System? I have Windows XP. Thanks for the reply. RogerRestart your PC. Hit the F8 key to get into start mode menu and select safe mode. Sign in as Administrator. PASSWORD might be blank.

Do you get the same symptoms?
Can you run Malwarebytes while in Safe Mode? Try it.Thanks, I will follow your direction and send a new reply.

Solve : xp passwords and identity?

Answer»

every time my KIDS use my computer, something goes wrong--the mouse doesn't move, my SPELL check for word disappears, whatever. So, I put in a password. Now, they are taking a computer class, and need to use the program "Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0". Is there anyway I can develop an "identity" for them, specifiying that they can use this program but no other, or on the other hand, ruling out CERTAIN programs, like control panel, word. In short, how can I find peaceful co-existence with these guys?
thanksThere is plenty of pearental control programs. Download or BUY some of this software. make them an account and install it on that spacific account (not your own) It will then run and you should be able to modify EXACTLY what they can and cannot dothanks. I THINK what I wanted to say was that: on the XP program there is a place to set up a password, which I did, and to set up and "administrator" who is me; now, what about the other "identities" that XP offers to be set up alongside the administrator. Can I use that to give them their access to what they need and keep them out of the rest? Where I live, we don't have access to that kind of software you are saying, and we can't buy things through the internet. sigh.Dr. J:

Solve : My Dell PC won't boot, four short beeps repeat over and over?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 530S with Windows XP Professional. Last night I worked until 1230 a.m. doing medical transcription, all systems working fine, and shut down as normal. This morning when I tried to turn on, the fan came on and stayed on and I get a continous four-beep cycle. I have shut down and unplugged everything and replugged several times. My APC backup shows a green light. My router and modem both show all green. This PC is CONNECTED by a router cable to my router in another room, and I am typing this note from my other PC in that room. I cannot switch the two PCs due to one being owned by my employer loaded with their proprietary software and not to be used for personal use (as I am doing now to send this desperate plea for help!) I am scheduled to work at 1 p.m. EST and being a computer know-nothing I need help. I have a friend who is very computer savvy but I can't reach him as he is on vacation. Any assistance you can provide will help a very unhappy transcriptionist. I'm sorry I don't know the memory capacity or other technical info. The PC is about 3 years old. It was built by Dell for me when I ordered it.

Check the website of your bios provider for their beep codes. Alternatively, you might want to call Dell support.you sound pretty desparate and frazzled so here is a link. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/inspd530/EN/OM/HTML/trouble.htm#wp1085300 SURE looks like a RAM issue. If you feel comfortable (very easy REALLY) open the case (power disconnected--touch the chassis somewhere 1st after power disconnect) then LOOK at your RAM modules. See how MANY there are. Remove all but one. If that one gets you up and running again you can use the computer to finish your task. Then when you have more time try each ram module in each ram slot (one at a time) If a ram module works in one slot but not another then it is a slot problem. If by testing the ram one module at a time you find one that does NOT work then leave it out as it is defective. Then use all the ram modules that work and replace the one that has failed with an exact module of what it is (even to the manufacturer if possible). But you can use the computer for as long as you need to even with only one ram module in it. It may be a bit slower but generally in most use cases not so much that you will notice it (unless your PLAYING computer games or some other intensive use software). Solve : un able to delete file?

i have a big problem, i had gone to a website, and then my desktop changed, and this spyware trial was downloaded to my computer, my desktop picture cant be changed cuz its locked in the properties when i right CLICK on the desktop to change it, when i press ctrl alt delete, my taskmanager button is FADED and i cant click on it but i can do everything else. i managed to delete some files that allowed me to get to task manager but then when i stopped a process that is a trojan or something, it starts up again not even a second later right infront of me. so i found the files in the serch engine when i typed in the process name in search and the file is locked by a password so i cant delet it, my antivirus detected it but couldnt deleted it cuz its a locked file, and ad aware se, (a software i use to detect trojans) also cant delete it cuz its locked, i have a windows xp pro computer, would someone plzzzz tell me how to unlock the file so i can delete it or maybe currupt the file so that its no longer a threat? plz email me at [email protected] i want to save my computer fast. i tried one thing, i went to ms dos, (command prompt) and i typed in 'tasklist' and it gave me a list of running processes, is there anyway that i can stop any processes from ever activating again through ms dos?if you are running windows xp you could try doing a system restore back a month or so when all was working fine. You can try that, but chances are that if this is advanced Spyware, then it has made itself kind of HARD to delete... A System Restoration MIGHT work, but don't be suprised if it does not... Also, it sounds like you have internet ACCESS on that computer... Cna you try to download Microsoft AntiSpyware, or some other Spyware protector to help delete this.... (Do NOT install Microsoft AntiSpyware if it is not compatible with your system)

Solve : so many problems...?

Answer»

Okay guys, I don't know much about computers and I'm seeking major help.

Problem #1:
For some reason, whenever I play a cd in my cd-rom drive, the SOUND is all distorted. I don't have this problem when I play a MUSIC or sound file on my computer, it's just sound coming in from a cd that is screwed up. Anyone have any ideas on this?

Problem #2:
I had the Sims on my computer LAST year, and it was working just fine. Then one day it stopped working, and it would just no longer load. There weren't any crazy circumstances surrounding this, it just stopped working one day. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it. What happens is that the game installs fine, and when I go to play it, it will load fine, but as soon as it finishes loading, the screen goes away, and I'm back at my desktop like nothing ever happened. This happens with any other game I try to load from a cd, so it's not just the cd itself.

Problem #3:
I KEEP getting the following message popping up every couple hours or so:

SL1C.tmp - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
process id=0xdf0 (3568), thread id=0xf20 (3872)
Click Ok to terminate the application
Click cancel to debug the application

And when I click "Cancel," it tells me that the JIT Debugger cannot be found. What's going on?

Anyone who can help me with any of these problems is a rock star, and will have my inexhaustable gratitude. Thanks!!!
For problems 1 and 2... Try updating your sound card drivers by going to your sound card manufacturer's website... (2) Have you downloaded any plug-ins for the game from the internet? Have you made any changes to your system lately?

Solve : transfering files?

Answer»

I want to TRANSFER some files from my desktop with Windows 98 to my laptop with Windows XP. I connected them with a crossover cable and went to the laptop's "file and SETTINGS transfer wizard". It told me I needed a wizard disc for the other computer. I can't create one because the laptop doesn't have a floppy disc drive. I don't have the Windows XP CD either.
I called Geek Squad and they told me I needed to network my computers and they would charge me $169 to do it. So I was attempting to do it myself but I came across the same problem with the network setup wizard. My options are to create a network setup disc (when I try to do this it just tells me I have no floppy disc drives), use the network setup disc I already have (I don't have one), use my Windows XP CD (don't have it) or just finish the wizard (which won't work).
I don't really want a network anyways, I just want to transfer some files. I'm not good with this stuff, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Also, there are links to follow that give detailed instructions by OS.

Hope this helps. thanks, but my problem isn't sharing the FOLDERS. it's setting up the network. when i use the network setup wizard on the xp it says "You need to run the Network Setup Wizard once on each of the computers on your network. To run the wizard on computers that are not running Windows XP you can use the Windows XP CD or a Network Setup Disc"
well i don't have the cd and i can't create a network setup disc. kerem ozkan ..... well if you cant network them ...there is another option ....use MSN messenger and transfer them that way ........

Solve : building a p.c.?

Answer»

Has anyone any experience, advice or opinions on building the p.c. using the components recommended in Computeractive magazine, they are: Processor: AMD Sempron 140 Motherboard: Asus M4N68T-M LE V2 Memory: Crucial CT25664BA1339A DVD Drive Sony 24x DVD-RW SATA Hard Disk: Samsung HD161GJ. I MAINLY use the p.c. for streaming live sports via Sopcast, but my daughter is increasingly getting more into gaming and her laptop (ancient Compaq Presario) keeps dying on her when games are loaded. She can't afford a laptop that can handle the games so sharing something with a bit more guts than my current dinosaur E-Machines 170, (upgraded to 2GB memory and Nvidea G5200 graphics card,) could be a cost effective solution.
All comments and suggestions for better spec, (budget max £200,) gratefully received.First of all, my building is limited. Only did a few. So no help with the specifics you asked for, except one THING. You SAY a budget of £ 200.
UK£ 200 = 224.873096 Euros
UK£ 200 = 327.82 U.S. dollars
That is a tight budget for a gaming machine. But by careful choice, you can have something that is good, but not a great storyteller.
Opinions beyond this point are only my own. Unless somebody agrees.
The e-machine PSU is most likely to small. Or too old. Either way, a new PSU is a good investment, but don't GO overboard.
RAM prices now a holding or rising. Check to see if the motherboard with take the RAM you have at hand. Buy more later, when prices go down.
That card you have is no bad. stick with ir until you know for sure that it is the weak spot.
CPU performance comes first in gaming, video card specs are second. I refuse to change my mind of this. So do the homework on the CPU Motherboard combo.
Have you already looked at this?
http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/processors/sempron/Pages/AMD-sempron-processor-product-comparison.aspx
Of course you have. I put it thee so others could see what you are talking about. Did you notice the AMD has better specs that the comparable Intel with lower powerr?
That's all I can say.You need to find more cabbage if your goal is a gaming machine...

Solve : what's running??

Answer»

How do I determine what is running in the BACKGROUND and turn it off? All my windows including sign-on screen, email, start page, etc, SHUT down. I do not get booted off. I must click somewhere in the window in order for the title bar to light up again allowing me to type, scroll, or click. Someone suggested I download tweak UI and I did. I checked the box "prevent applications from stealing focus" and applied the CHANGE. It did not do the trick. Also, my screensaver comes on sometimes when it is supposed to. The screensaver also turns off sometimes. thanks in advance for HELP or advice, Derrick Quote

Solve : Pls Help! Stack Overflow Error during reinstall?

Answer»

Hi,

I am now so lost as to what to do, as I do not know very much about computers! Any HELP or advise would be most appreciated!

I re-formatted my laptop harddisk and wanted to re-install MS Milleniuum OS. I used the original backup cd from the manufacturer(gateway) but was however prompted with the following error message...

"An internal stack overflow has caused this session to be halted. Check the STACKS setting in your CONFIG.SYS file and then try again"

Now I am totally lost! I have ABSOLUTELY no IDEA how/ where to locate the config.sys file! My drive being newly reformatted should be blank?

And to make matters worse, me being such a klutz have nothing like boot disk floppy (not very sure what that is, but seem to be mentioned quite often with system installtion?!? ). All I have are the Gateway drivers cd, software cd, and the ME backup cd from Gateway...

Have I just killed my Laptop?? Am so frantic and lost right now as to what to do!

Pre:

There are two ways to fix this...

1. The hard way: Edit the Config.sys file on your boot disk as the following article explains.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q145799/

2. The easy way: ADD more Random Access Memory (RAM) to your COMPUTER before you install Windows. Make sure you purchase the right type of RAM stick(s).

Solve : Settings change themselves??

Answer»

I'm using a dell inspiron 600m with xp and all the updates so far. Ever since I got it, it likes to change settings by itself.

What I mean is, that I will hide a system tray icon, I restart the computer and it is not hidden.

Or I try to unhide a folder and even right after I close it, it is hidden again.

And my desktop icons will rearrange themselves however they like.

And the most annoying one, if I close my screen with an IE window open, it resizes to a very small size. And if I maximize it, then the next time I open it, it is small again, until I resize it manually it won't open that size.

Any help?Virus? Have you scanned recently?I update nortan automatically and scan every week.

This has also been going on since I got it, even before I got it connected to my network.

My friend also has the same problem with his dell laptop. So I am thinking it is a problem with XP or how it is setup.Crashmaxx.... "Or I try to unhide a folder and even right after I close it, it is hidden again. " Could you please EXPLAIN exactly how your trying to do this ?

Try this ....open IE .......if its in a small window ....dont maximize ......... just put the cursor out on the edges and pull it out to the size you want . then the next time you open...it should be the CORRECT size .

I go into folder properties and UNCHECK hide and click apply. It does this whole process of unhiding but it is hidden again minutes later.

I do that but it is annoying to do that everytime I close the screen with IE open.

Plus I thought older versions you could open it and it would be maximized and you could click the thing and it would get small if you wanted.I had a problem similar to the small window annoyance
once.

I right clicked on the right side of the taskbar near the clock and then from the dropdown menu selected
"Tile Windows Vertically".
That snapped the window to the proper size. And then I closed it and when I reopened it, it remained at the proper size.

Solve : sleekbldpro.exe?

Answer»

I have recently been getting this message when on line.

sleekbldpro.exe is attempting to access the internet

Can anybody tell me what this is? It only started coming on yesterday.

THANKS for any info
Tomahawk_kidIt's probably Spyware... Do you have protection against Spyware and viruses?

Sorry
but it should be sleekbldpoe.exe i've got adaware, spybot & Norton internet security on the PC none of them find it. When i do a search with windows XP pro it finds the file in the Windows pre fetch folder. I've tried to delete it but it just keeps coming back.
Tomahawk_KidHiya
I'd just like to say thanks to pcdoc4christ & flame for their replies. I've managed to get rid of the file. It was spyware/adware from a company called DIRECT Revenue, when you VISIT their web site they do actually supply a removal tool for their software (good on them). I downloaded this tool run it and hey presto no more "sleekbldpoe.exe is trying to access the internet".

Again thanks for your help.

Solve : Hard Drives & Win XP?

Answer»

Hi all

Just wondering if anybody here knows what could be going on with my comp. I've INSTALLED 2 X 200gb WD Caviar HDDs in my system without running RAID. Everythings up & running but in windows the little "Click here to remove hardware SAFELY" green arrow icon thing comes up in the icon tray and lists my hard drives as removable devices.

This isn't a huge concern for me but i really don't have any idea why two SATA hard drives would come up as removable devices. My fear is that someone might click to remove one of them and all *censored* may break loose.

Any ideas? My full specs listed below.

Thermaltake Armor Tower SILV
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ Skt939
MSI K8N Diamond S939 MB
KT KVR400X64C25/1024 DDR 400MHz
WD Caviar 200GB 7.2K SerialATA
LG 16X+-Dual Layer DVR/RW BLK
MSI NX6800GT-T2D256 PCI-E

Cheers!

Solve : Weird thing not going away?

Answer»

I got my new PC a week ago, and now i have this pop-up thing that doesnt go away, i have no idea how to remove it, any help will be excepted!

Oh yea, heres a pic of what my desktop LOOKS like with that pop-up thing:

I'd click 'Next' to see what program was trying to setup.

Do this at your own risk LOL.i would go to cnet.com and download adaware and run it on your system cause it looks like spie ware good luckThere are possibly setup files in a temp folder somewhere so run Disk Cleanup and then install and run CCLeaner.

You should aso use AdAware SE, SpyBot SD & SpywareBlaster.

Type msconfig in the Run window and see if there is anything there that shouldn't be there, uncheck it if there is and click Apply, but don't re-boot at this stage, and then type regedit in the Run window and search for Run keys with corresponding entries referring to the setup.exe or other files for this program.

Be very careful what you delete in the registry or you could possibly be faced with re-installing.

So backup any data which is important to you.

Solve : ENTERING CMOS AND/OR BIOS SETUP?

Answer»

I have attempted (unsuccessfully) to enter my CMOS setup. I have tried all the recommended "F" keys as well as "ESC","DEL" and various Ctrl+Alt combination.

Thus far I have not been able to access it. I have Windows XP Pro SR 2, Pentium 4 and Microsoft Natural Multimedia Keyboard.

Looking for Guidance! Most computers running Windows XP you can get there by pressing F2 at the post screenI appreciate your amazingly rapid reply to my inquiry, however a resultant problem has occurred.

When I pressed F2 upon appearance of the post screen, the appropriate menu that allows me entrance to the CMOS/BIOS quickly flickers On & just as quickly flickers OFF!

Any suggestion?Nomen:

What is the name of the BIOS maker? Award? Phoenix? Dell? The name of the manufacturer of the BIOS may appear at the top of the display when you first turn on the computer. If you tell us the manufacturer's name it may help us determine what key (or combinations of keys) you need to press.

Regards,
DocI should have provided you with the following info in my original inquiry.- so here goes! The BIOS manufacturer is the Intel Corp; Bios Vendor is American Megatrends Inc; Bios Name is AMIBIOS.
Boot Features: DOES supports Selective Booting, CD/DVD Boot, LS-120 Boot, ZIP Boot, BIOS Boot Block and Interactive Network Boot.

It does NOT support PCMCIA/CardBus Boot, Supports i2o Boot and FireWire/1394 Boot.

By the way, your DIRECTIVE to use the F2 key coincides directly with the support DIRECTIVES from Intel
(“enter BIOS SETUP by pressing F2 repeatedly after booting the system”).

The reason I am trying to resolve this is because I am ready to do a Flash Bios Upgrade. Prior to UPGRADING I want to write down all settings that are unique to my system in case these settings will be needed later to reconfigure the system.

Could either of the following TWO conjectures have anything to do with my difficulties? The Boot Block support listed above and/or the procedures of my computer’s Boot procedures?

My normal Boot sequence: 1 Starts with Nvidia GeForce descriptive (version, copyright, MB); 2.Intel Pentium4 splash screen 3.XP or Windows Recovery Choice or *F8 for advanced settings 5. Win XP Screen 6. ...The BIOS manufacturer is the Intel Corp...

Did you mean to say, the motherboard manufacturer is Intel? Intel motherboards seem to use F2, no matter which BIOS they have.Even tho the "Delete" key did not resolve the issue--

Solve : virtual gaming port?

Answer»

[glb][CPU = Celeron (R) CPU 2.67 GHz][RAM = 1.46 GB] [computer brand = unknown (i built it myself off a website)][/glb]

i need to learn how to MAKE a virtual game port for my joystick [Wingman Extreme Digital 3D] it uses a physical game port but in the readme file it states

"the Logitech WingMan line of serial and USB gaming DEVICES will function on
computers without gameports or soundcards. However, the Windows operating
system requires a gameport entry in the "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers"
section of the Device Manager in order for any gaming devices to be ADDED in
the Control Panel. If your computer does not have a soundcard or a gameport, it
is very important that a "virtual" gameport is listed in the Device Manager in
order for the WingMan Force or WingMan Formula Force to function properly. It is
not necessary for a physical gameport to be installed in the system. Installing
the driver is SUFFICIENT."

so it is aparant i need a virtual game port
