I have always had aol on my computer, one day I couldn't log on, computer froze, i have never been able to log on again, i DELETED the whole program and reinstalled, i cannot connect to aol now, computer will not LET me connect
there is nothing WRONG with cable connection
aol said it is not their problem
hp said its not their problem
roadrunner says its not their problem
what do i do?DJ:

I'd call AOL and spell it out for them: Either they give you the tech support you need or a REFUND, then go with a different ISP.Personally, I use Verizon DSL, and it's great! SWITCH to them. They have great support, and everything... Might want to think about it...

Solve : blue screen - memory dumping?

Answer»

Kids computer started getting blue screen stating memory dumped shutdown / restart. Tried to install virus prtoection buts error message pops up and shuts down again. Need help Was able to remove ad WARE in safe MODE. still no help.Probably a virus... Man, I wish you had protection... :-/

[glb]Flame[/glb]Jay:

Flame is LIKELY on to something, but please provide more info. When the blue screen of death (BSOD) appears, what *exactly* does the error message say? Does it have the word STOP followed by 0x000000yy (where yy represents two numbers or a number and a letter)? If so, please write down the stop error number and let us know what it is.

If there is not a stop error, please write down exactly what the error says and leave a reply for us so we may look it up. One of us will tell you what to do next.

Also, if you know, please tell us what happened just prior to the BSOD. Did your son/daughter install a new game? Did you add a new expansion card? Do you have some evidence that the computer is infected with a virus?

Solve : VXD files are gone?

Answer»

We have an OLD computer that is used only as a timeclock at work. Last week there was a power outage and ever since then the printer driver was missing when I rebooted the system I get a really long error message before it even gets to Windows (95) at the dos prompt that basically tells me vnetsup.vxd is missing and to hit any key to continue, it continues through 9 more missing items (nwlink.vxd, nwredir.vxd, nscl.vxd, vredir.vxd, ndis.vxd, ndis2sup.vxd, vnetbios.vxd, vppsd.386 and hput.386) then it shuts the computer down.

I am able to start at the c prompt, I just don't know how to get these items back on my computer - any guidance you can give me would be greatly appreciated!Bing:

Boot to Safe Mode, then follow these instructions:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q166832/

If that doesn't work, boot to Safe Mode and try this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137454/EN-US/

or this:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/140010/EN-US/#appliesto

One of those RECOMMENDATIONS should do it!

Regards,
DocHi Doc,

First, let me thank you for your help! But we don't have internet access on that PARTICULAR PC and I'm not sure that I can hook it up anywhere. Can I download it to a disk from my "regular" computer and then install it?

dedebing:

Are you saying you don't have the Windows 95 installation floppy disks (or CD) and asking if you may download the files?

HEY Dedebing,

I've had the same PROBLEMS and HEADACHES caused by some of those missing files. Try putting in the 95 CD and extract those files. They are usually in cab files so search google to figure out which cab files they are in. At least that's how i did it. Good Luck. We do still have the original installation and any upgrades, they are just kept offsite. Unfortunately, it's like pulling teeth to get my boss to bring me anything I request. Basically, I was looking for a quick solution to my problem but this is more involved than I thought it would be. So, I emailed our business manager and dropped it in his lap - he makes the big bucks so this can be his issue now (not to mention if it's his problem he will make sure to bring the disks)!

Thank you for your help though, I definitely feel more educated about this!

Deanna dede:

No quick fix; you need the Windows installation CD to follow the recommendations of the Microsoft knowledge base articles.

You'll have to break the news to your boss.

Doc

Solve : Opening Word 6 Docs?

Answer»

Hi Again,

I have lots of Wordpad docs from my 95 and I want to open them in XP but it SAYS I can't.
I have tried renaming them txt and rtf but I get rubbish.
The list of downloads available confuses me. I do not have any office or special word programs or Excel, just wordpad.

Best wishes

Dave EYou WOULD have to open them in Word 6.0 and then save them as RTF files.

You could also download the Word viewer from Microsoft.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=95e24c87-8732-48d5-8689-ab826e7b8fdf&DisplayLang=en

This would ALLOW you to look at them but not change them.

Solve : Windows XP - old software?

Answer»

I have RECENTLY purchased a NEW computer which runs Windows XP. My previous machine ran Windows 98.

I have loaded some software from my old machine onto the new one. I've been having problems with these programs. For example, I loaded Publisher 97 onto the new machine.

I can open Publisher, create a new document, but every now and then (especially when printing) the software crashes.

I've been into Properties => Compatibility and adjusted settings there, but to no avail.

Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any solutions??

Thanks!

Buff Solutions? Yes, upgrade your Publisher to a more current version. Publisher 97, when written, was barely aware of Windows NT Workstation, much less Windows XP. So if you need to use it either upgrade it or use the old adage "Save early and save often"Buff:

Gussery is right, but this *might* work:

1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Program Compatibility Wizard.

2. In the "Welcome to the Program Compatibility Wizard" page, select "I want to locate the program manually" and click Next.

3. In the "Which program do you want to run with compatibility settings" page, click Browse.

4. Navigate to the FOLDER that holds the Publisher 97 executable (.EXE) program, click to select it and click Open.

5. In the "Select a compatibility mode for the program" page, choose "Microsoft Windows 98/ Windows Me" and click Next.

6. In the "Select display settings for the program" page, make sure all the check boxes are cleared and click Next.

7. In the "Test your compatibility settings" page, click Next.

After verifying that it works, return to the Wizard and follow the rest of the steps. There is no guarantee this will work, but it's WORTH a try!

Quote

Yes, upgrade your Publisher to a more current version.

Too true, however I might try pcdoc4christ's suggestion first.

Thanks to you both. I'll report back the results.

Buff
Unfortunately, it looks like I'll have to purchase the program

Thanks for your help and advice!

What did you format your hard drive with? Not a '98 bootdisk I hope. Sys C: is for '95/'98 and is not an XP command.

Whether you have a full version of XP or an upgrade version you should be able to boot directly to the XP CD and do ALL of the partition deletions re-making of new partitions and formatting FROM the XP CD.

It would help to know if your XP CD has SP1 or SP2 and what sort of hardware your computer has, specifically, processor, RAM and drive size.

Or you could make an I386 folder on the hard drive and copy the entire contents of the i386 folder on the CD to it and then run winnt.exe

If you are having trouble with the XP CD try gently washing and drying it and try again. After it has been washed and dried copying can also help and you should use data verification.

When you know that your CD is good and if it does not already have a service pack level then you should use AUTOSTREAMER 1·0 to slipstream your XP CD and produce a new up-to-date one.

Any suggestions. He is running Windows XP with 512 megs memory. You don't mention SCANNING for viruses with an up to date virus scanner............Sleepy:

How's Sneezy and Dopey? (sorry, bad joke).

I agree with Gussery; a virus MAY take up a lot of resources. Also, please answer a few questions:

Has this always been a PROBLEM with his system, or a recent development? If recent, what has changed just prior to this BEHAVIOR? (for example, did he install a new game or add a new hard drive)? What processor and speed does the system have? He has a dell 4200 w/2.66 ghz and 512 memory. Been a problem for a while. It got really slow once before and I removed all adware and spyware and it made a huge difference. But there are none on the comp. now so that is not it. Quote

which means diddly squat to me, but also i have order forms on a floppy which i cant open either, and then it does not come up with any of the above, but it is telling me that it is having problems with the graphic dimensions, now why this is happening i dont know,as the same floppy goes into my friends computer and with the same Wordpad and it opens it ok, and i need the work of the floppy, which i might add my friend did it up for me on her comp to start with, but also when someone sends me emails and they open in wordpad i also get the above message about the Illigals.
So you can see i really need help with this, i have been into the microsoft website looking and asking for help but to no avail, could someone please help me with this as it is getting rather frustrating now. I am working with windows 98se, and my comp is about 4 years old now

Regards
koolcazUninstall it and then reinstall it.I'm not sure how to do that, as it was loaded on my comp when i bought it, and I don't have a DISC for it either, so could you please tell me how i do what you suggested

Regards
koolcazYou need the OS disk. Sometimes they store the installation files on your computer instead of giving you a disk. If they did this on Windows 98 the installation FOLDER is either Win98 or C:\Windows\Options\Cabs.

Once you know where the installation files are then use the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Look under Windows Components, find Word PAD, uncheck it. Click OK and let it uninstall it. Reboot your computer and repeat the process, checking it to install it. If Windows asks you where to find the files then the FIRST paragraph of this post is the answer.

Solve : XP Screen Saver Won't Start?

Answer»

The PROBLEM started about a month ago. The XP SCREEN saver simply won't COME on. I've tried different ones, set to different times, but no use. The problem seems to be intermittent; I reboot my computer and the problem corrects itself, but then recurs after awhile. I usually leave the machine on all day and shut down at night, and it seems to be after the machine has been on awhile that the screen saver disables. I've run Spyware and Virus checks, and they all come up negative. Are you having problems with the power saving options or is this just isolated to the screensaver? One possibility, if you have a wireless mouse, false signals could interrupt the screensaver timer. Also check to see if OUTLOOK or Outlook Express is automatically CHECKING for incoming mail which could disrupt the screensaver.

Hope this helps.

Solve : when restart explore goes to porn site?

Answer»

Goggle is my HOME page. However, when I "restart" the computer it automatically starts EXPLORER and brings it to a porn site. I check my homepage and it is still Google. Why is this happening and how can I get it to stop?sounds like a hijacking program has written to your registry. If it is always the same site you are taken to, start regedit and do a SEARCH for the url of the site you are taken too. If the search finds some entries, then POST back and you can be coached by someone on how to remove it - but be SURE to back up the registry FIRST before doing any editing. Are you running any anti virus or trojan software? This is the act of spyware or a virus... Do you have protection for both?

Solve : restore ghost image to larger drive?

Answer»

Given the expert help recently granted to me, I have another issue for any input available from ONE and all. I had a 17GB SCSI drive fail yesterday which was my OS C: drive RUNNING Win XP SP2. I also had a 9GB SCSI on the same cable. I removed the card and bth drives from the box I BACK up with Ghost 2003 in DOS with no drive marking. I restored an image of the 17GB to a 120GB drive. I believe ghost should resize automatically. It seems restore went OK but I can't get windows to load. I tried SAFE mode and the drivers start to load but before it gets to the log in screen it dies and reboots. one other small point - the 120GB is actually a new 160GB drive, 7200 running on a card. When I first got it, there was a problem the OUTCOME of which was Maxtor said it was too much of a hurdle to restore the "missing" 40GB. But it has been running fine otherwise, but as a storage slave drive. Help!!Oops - meant to ask - anyone think this can be Win XP locking me out of the OS due to too many hardware changes (drives, SCSI card, OS drive size) versus its "mapping" of my system? Quote

...I restored an image of the 17GB to a 120GB drive...

17GB is SCSI, 120GB is IDE? If, yes, I suspect that's the problem: restoring SCSI drive to IDE drive. The 120GB/160GB mismatch is due to your BIOS limitations.

Solve : Puter w/only 128 MB memory/100% load?

Answer»

Hi there,,I know I don't have much memory but SINCE I installed McAfee Security Center Suite 7.0 my puter continues to freeze. I assume its because its always at 100% load since there are 11 start-up items JUST for McAfee (when I did the msconfig) What I'm wondering,,is IF there are any of the McAfee start-up items that I 'kind of/sort of' don't need to be totally protected until I can afford more memory). I have Windows 98/IE 6.0 Thank you in advance for any ideas JanJan:

The safest way is to open the Security Suite and FIND the options or SETTINGS. Then, choose to disable everything but what you really need.

If that doesn't work, let us know, and someone will explain how to disable startup programs in the System Configuration Utility.

Regards,
DocYoure awesome Don't mind me lol I just have no clue what I actually need from all those McAfee items. If I'm not mistaken, when I FIGURE out whats really not needed per say, then I'd uncheck those on the System Configuration?Too late I know, but if you can take McAfee back saying that it is too much for your computer and use AVG Free Home Edition and Zone Alarm Free Home firewall INSTEAD you might have enough cash for the RAM.

Otherwise, if McAfee is anything like Norton System Works, do a re-install and only select the Anti-Virus and Firewall for installation.

Solve : NAT problem?

i have done tests on the INTERNET and they say i have a NAT problem or that im behind a router when im not the computer (the only one in the HOUSE) is CONNECTED directly to the DSL modem.

I also ran a firewall test at www.auditmypc.com (with the firewall turned off) and it still couldn't find any open ports.

Hi I am having problem in connecting to internet. In Speedup my PC it is shown "Unable to connect to server". My connection is a modem router (Artnet) connected with a 8 port ethernet switch to a second computer running win 98se. the other one is running win xp pro. The problem is when I tried to go to 192.168.1.1 it could not open in IE.(connection to internet was not available so I tried to connect to see the setting runs out or not.). In my opinion if it could open in IE I will be able to connect to internet. The funny thing is that I could connect to internet in the win 98se. computer normally. I tried using LS fix, in the box it show the following items listed :mswsock.dll-tcip, winrnr.dll-ntds, nl isp.dll-[PROTOCOL handler], rsvps.dll-[protocol handler]. I check the box (I know what I am doing check box) and start,it did a repair. After I tried to go online it still could not connected. I have scan with adaware, spybot and giant antispyware and also a virus scan still no help. Please someone help me out.
mengchee:

Try restarting the Windows 98 computer. If that doesn't work, try powering down the router, waiting a few minutes, then powering it up again, then restart the Windows 98 computer again. If that doesn't work, do this from the Windows 98 desktop:

1. Click Start and select Run.
2. Type COMMAND in the Run dialog box.
3. At the command prompt, type IPCONFIG /RELEASE and press ENTER. Then type IPCONFIG /RENEW and press ENTER.
4. Restart the Windows 98 computer.

If that doesn't work, go to the command prompt window again and type IPCONFIG /ALL and write everything down that is displayed. Next, start the Windows XP machine, click Start and select Run and type CMD and press ENTER. Then, in the CMD.EXE window, type IPCONFIG /ALL and write everything down.

Leave a post for us with the full IP configuration for both the Windows 98 and XP computers. We'll let you know what to do next.

From what I see the Subnet maskes are not matching one the first adapter I see 255.255.0.0

on the second I see 255.255.255.0

these must match for the computers to talk to each other. Thanks for your reply. I am not experience in this matter,is it I have to change it to 255.255.255.0
only in win xp mc. Lately I came across a fix call winstock xp fix can I use this to fix the problem. appreciate to hear from you all. Thanks.So... Let me understand: you have 2 computers, a modem and a switch. The 2 computers are connected to the switch, each one through a cable... Or the Windows XP computer is connected to the Windows 98 computer? How is your modem connected to your little network? By a cable to the switch, or by a cable to one of the computers?
For your Windows XP computer you don't have the DNS set and also you don't have set the gateway address. It seems to me that your Xp computer is connected to the 98 computer (because they are both in the same network, 169.254.0.0) ... Tell us exactly how each component is connected. Where is connected the modem; where and how are connected the computers...
I'm confused...
Thanks viking for your reply. Well I actually do not know how to explain to you, I will describe in layman term to you. The line from my house phone (telecom line) goes to the modem (DSL) > from the modem (LAN) the cable goes to the switch hub (8 ports switch hub) > from the switch ports one cable goes to Win xp mc. > ANOTHER from the switch port goes to win 98 mc. I hope you are clear and further clarification if needed please ask.The 169.xxx.xxxx.xxx address tells me that you have your network card to automatically get an address from a DHCP server, normally on a router in a home enviroment. You mention a hub/switch which cannot normally give you an address which connects to a dsl modem which can give you an address. So I will assume that the dsl modem is setup to only give out 1 address, so your second computer cannot get a correct address in the 192.168.1.x (you ip on the Win 98 box tells me the dsl modem is the dhcp server).

A computer with the default 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address is not going to find any other computers, router interfaces, Internet anything.

So if you can configure your dsl modem from your 98 box to give out more than one address and your cabling is correct you should then have no problem connecting.

If this is not allowed or an extra charge from your provider you will want to set it up so the XP box is the one that gets the address from the modem and then enable Internet Connection Sharing on it. Or purchase your own HARDWARE firewall or router and use it with or in place of the hub and let it give addresses to both.

Hi gussery thanks very much for your lengthly topic. Yes it was setup to have my network card to automatically get an address from a DHCP server, normally on a router in a home enviroment. Regarding the hub/switch (I am not sure whether it was called by this name,It provides more ports so you can connect it to a second computer as this is what it was for my used ). One thing I wish to clarify is that it is working normally a long time without problem. I am not sure whether it was interupted by antivirus or spyware scan which may remove something from it (my opinion). Another thing which I have LEFT out is that the win xp is set as secondarly slave and the other Hdd.is set as primary (WinME.OS.) and this ME.can be connected to internet really strange (even though the DOS screen shown different from the Win XP as above given ipcong/all. I am confused now and do not know what to do. I am now using WinME(primary hdd) on the same mc. where the XP (secondary hdd.) is to go online. I hope to hear further suggestion on what to do from you all. I am not experienced in setup in this matter and have difficulty in understanding what you mentioned. Thanks.
                       What does *net*...........report....try *ping*ing your own server.........[Msdos prompt* commands]or have a look here>http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/

and always check firewall settings..?and also more info on dsl modem.........is it via a usb ...you may have exceeded the usb.. bandwidth.... you can try right-click on my computer icon/properties+universal host controller properties box...and untick the usb correction box...Hi merin 2 I tried ping 192.168.1.1 in win xp it was not successfull I got timed out message on both IP. I could ping both IP in win ME. ( ME. is set as primary master). Anything else I could try. Please someone help. Thanks merin 2.http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.htmlThanks gussery I have tried what you have mentioned including LS fix to no effect. Hoping to hear from you all for further suggestion.Your problem is that you are not getting an address from the DHCP server. You can't ping the 192.168.xxx.xxx addresses with the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx addresses.
So your...
network card is bad or....
the drivers are bad or ....
the TCP stack is hosed or....
the cable is bad or....
the port on the switch is bad or ....
the network is not set to obtain addresses automatically or...
your service provider has limited you to one NAT address on the modem or....
you have some malware highjacking your card or...

Have you done a ping to the local loopback address (127.0.0.1)? That may tell you whether the problem is internal to the pc or stack or external to the network, but not always.

Hi gussery let me go step by step as I said I am not good in configuration of this matter. I tried to ping 127.0.0.1 it was successfull I got a reply from the ping. Your problem is that you are not getting an address from the DHCP server etc. can you please give a walk through how to check and configure the items mentioned. I would like to pinpoint what is the cause as I am not having this problem, what happen it let to this changes I am surprised. I hope to hear futher help from you.

Solve : started XP, now can't get rid of?

Answer»

I had 98 update on my computer at HOME. I decided to uninstall it and put windows xp on it instead. Well i thought 98 was uninstalled. SO i put the xp cd in and started the setup. It kept saying i had 98 still on the computer. So i then found out 98 cannot be REMOVED totally. So now, i have the xp set up still coming up everytime i REBOOT. What do i do?rking7066.......What about doing a format of the hard drive and then doing a clean install of Win XP ?

dl65 To do a clean install, you boot with the Win XP CD and delete the Win98 partition then CREATE a new one for XP format with ntfs. Download wxpboot.exe and make a bootdisk. Use fdisk to delete the old drive. Then boot to the XP CD and make a new drive and/or drive partitions and format drive C: to NTFS you can format any partitions you make using Disk MANAGER in Windows.

Solve : Pagefile on XP?

Answer»

Hi all,

Can any one tell me the location of the Pagefile (swap file on 9x) on XP home?

I would really appreciate this

cheersGenerally it's in the root directory of the C: drive. It has hidden and system attributes.

I still cannot find it. I looked up on the c: directory and unhided files but still not there for somereasons. Is there any WAY of ACCESSING this file at all?

many thanksWhy do you need to "access" it?

right click My Computer
choose Properties
select the Advanced tab
click the Settings button under the Performance section
select the Advanced tab
click the Change button under the Virtual Memory section
It will tell you what drive it is on.
The file name is pagefile.sys, it will only show up if you have selected to unhide hidden and system files.

If for some reason it is corrupted then in the PREVIOUS window set it to "No paging file".
Reboot the computer, go back to the Virtual Memory settings and set it back up again.

Gussery,

Thanks for your help but I tried that aready EARLIER. However, I managed to find it. I actually forgot to uncheck the Hide Protected ystem Files under the Foder Options. It is on the C: drive....stupid me

thanks guys

Solve : Help, windows close when mention certain words :S?

Answer» Hi,

I have a major problem on my computer. It has something against the words 'security' and 'virus'. Whenever either of these words appear in the title of a window (the blue bar at the top of each window) the computer closes it with in about 10 seconds :S.

I cant find out if it is a virus or not as when I go to install Norton AntiVirus it closes the bloody installation down lol!

Please can some one help me at all?

If anymore information is needed about the problem just ask...

Many thanks,

Luis

try out pandas free online service to check for virus'

http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm

Tell us the resultsIf you have access to another working PC thats connected to the internet you could download an up-to-date antivirus program and burn it to CDROM, then boot your infected PC into safemode and install and run the antivirus program while in safemode.

This strategy has worked for me before.
Good Luck.Luis:

Sounds like a virus to me. Please answer three questions:

What operating system do you have installed?

Have you tried booting to the Norton Anti-virus CD to run a virus scan from the CD or do you have any Norton Anti-virus rescue DISKS?

Did you write down the words of any error messages (even cryptic ones) that appeared?

Three things you might try:

A. Go to a friend's computer and download and SAVE the Avert Stinger virus removal "booster shot" to a floppy disk. Then, boot your computer to Safe Mode and run the program from the floppy. The tool is offered free by the makers of the McAfee anti-virus program. The download site is here:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/averttools.asp

B. Try a few of the free online virus scans:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=free+online+virus+scan&btnG=Google+Search

(This option might not work if the virus has altered your HOSTS file or taken other MEASURES to prevent you from using your WEB browser to reach these sites.)

C. Search the common keys in your registry that viruses often USE to start when your system loads Windows. This might give a clue as to the virus installed so that a removal tool may be found to kill it. Let one of us know if you need help searching the registry.

Solve : Manifest Parse error....ARRRRGGGG?

Answer»

Hi All

While re-installing XP, and the product key was ENTERED, I got to the point where it stops with the "fatal error" screen which in so many words says I have a manifest parse error from a file that is corrupt (off the cd) So I re-format the disk..bout the 20th TIME now and everytime I start the installation process...it always goes to that screen, (the one after the product key and the same error pops up. I would have thought that if the disk is formatted that it would start from scratch and not where it left off,(at the fatal error screen. Microsoft site suggests that I try another disk....any other suggestions?
thanksDuce:

Just curious; are you booting from a DOS startup disk and then running the setup, or are you booting from the Windows XP CD?

Also, does the error have the word STOP followed by several numbers or letters? If so, write down all the numbers and letters and let us know what they are so one of us may look it up and see what Micorosoft suggests.

If you Google for - manifest parse error - you'll get quite a tale of woe. Some of which I don't doubt are true tales concerning "Big Brother's speak-write" AKA the Porn Baron's computer network.

What I often do is to Puritanically hand-wash the offending CD in luke-warm water with a couple of drops of mild soap solution and a soft sponge, then gently dry with a clean linen cloth.

Usually works every time.

If there is a possibility of other (hhmmm) - corruption - making a copy using data verification usually produces a working XP CD so that the original can be kept safely so as not to get damaged by repeated use.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness, not Elliot Ness.

And the copied CD is just like the, um, real McCoy...Hey GUYS.. thanks for the quick reply...no...i used the cd to boot of of and no there were no "stop" with numbers attached but what the error message did say was that it could no find the "controls.man file located deep within the I386 dir...so I copied this file onto a FLOP and before the "screen of death" appeared, I removed the cd and when it asked me to insert, I untilized the floppy and while it was copying the control file I re-inserted the cd and it proceeded to install the remaining files. So that was good but man...one *censored* of a process getting to that point.

As far as the copying of the original disk, I did give the cd a mild wash before copying and to no avail....whats weird is the file was easily transfered to flop yet unseen during the setup...in any event...thanks again...this is a great site

Cheers

Very clever Ivan. Thanks for the tip! It ties in with this advice.

CONTROLS.MAN

I just thought to say that, if your XP CD does not have SP2, then slipstreaming SP2 with it and BURNING an XP SP2 CD might cure the problem.

I use AutoStreamer 1·0 or NLite to do slipstreaming with.

Need to be careful with NLite, as you can take too much out.

Solve : XP doesn't see newly installed RAM??

Answer»

I just doubled the RAM on my new AMD 64 FX-4000 computer from 2 to 4gb, which MSI states that 4gb is the max for the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI motherboard. But in XP My Computer\ Properties the RAM reads only 3.25gb. When there were only 2 DIMMs (1gb each) it read 2gb, as it should.
All four of the DIMM's are exactly the same part number - CorsairVS1GB400C3.
Any ideas?
George:

When you start your computer does the Power On Self-Test (POST), which is the black display with white characters prior to the Windows XP LOGO, count the memory all the way up to 4 GB?

I pressed "Del" because everything flashes by so quickly so I hope this info is what you're looking for:

CPU type AMT Athlon 64 4000+
Bios Ver W7100NMS V3
System Memory = 3407872K
Total Memory = 3407872K
Yep, 3407872K = 3.25 GBDo you have an onboard Graphics card? i used to **shudders**. It used my ram as its memory and drained itCan you pull one of the new modules and get it to read 3Gb? Then swap it for the other new module and see if that reads 3Gb?

Quick way to see if one is faulty.Late yesterday I downloaded MSI live update software from the MSI website. There was a BIOS update & some system analysis’s software.
The BIOS update didn't change the RAM reading, but WMIinfo provided a great deal of system info.
Under "Memory" it list all four DIMMs like this:

Name : PHYSICAL Memory
Memory Capacity : 1024MB
Memory BankLabel : Bank0/1
Memory TotalWidth : 64 Bits
DataWidth : 64 Bits
Memory DeviceLocator : A0
Memory Type : Unknown

I'm not a computer expert but it seems to recognize the four DIMMs as 1024MB each.

Kablam & Mac,
Here's the Video card info. It's a separate card, not onboard:

Name : MSI MS-StarForce GeForce 6800 GT (NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Series GPU)
Display Availability : Running/Full Power
Video Mode : 1280 x 960 x 4294967296 colors

As far as removing a DIMM to see if it drops to 3gb, MSI website warns against doing 3 chips; at least this is how I'm interrupting it. Here's a link to the MSI motherboard.
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8N_Neo4_Platinum/SLI&class=mb

About midways they describe memory.
I appreciate all of your responses & all further advice.
George
Yes, you are right about three modules. Sorry. OK then pull the two new ones, then pull one of the old ones. See if it is running OK on the one module.

Then put one of the new modules in as a second module and see if it will show 2Gb.

Then swap that one for the other new module and see if that will read 2Gb. Then you know that all four are working.

(You could pull all four and put the two new ones in, in place of the old ones, to see if together they read 2Gb as well.)

You read the warning about green and purple slots and which ones to use first.

Did you do all of the checks in BIOS and so on as recommended?George Ross..... This is from the blurb on your mobo ......read the very last item.........according to that ....you do have the 4 gb ........and things appear to be fine .

Dual-channel DDR works ONLY in the 3 combinations listed in the table shown above.
• Please select the identical memory modules to install on the dual channel, and DO NOT install three memory modules on three DIMMs, or it may cause some FAILURES.
• Always insert the memory modules into the GREEN slots first, and it is strongly recommended not to insert the memory modules into the PURPLE slots while the GREEN slots are left empty.
• This mainboard DO NOT support the memory module installed with more than 18 pieces of IC (integrated circuit).
• The Maximum memory speed decreases when the following two memory combination is selected:
- Each channel is installed with two double-sided memory module
- Both DIMM1 and DIMM3 are installed with double-sided memory module
• Due to the South Bridge resource deployment, the system density will only be detected up to 3+ GB (not full 4GB) when each DIMM is installed with an 1GB memory module

dl65
"Due to the South Bridge resource deployment, the system density will only be detected up to 3+ GB (not full 4GB) when each DIMM is installed with a 1GB memory module."

Well spotted dl65, and to think that I only bought new reading glasses two days ago.

Now where did I put them, Thanks, dl65!
Well...I had my glasses on but didn't see that!
And thanks everyone for their help.
GeorgeThanks George, dl65 is sharp eyed all right, but just as well to know that all modules are fully operational.

Solve : Help plz totally confused?

Answer»

I've been looken for an answer in forums all over the web for days now, and can't find the answer anywhere. I have a few questions if anyone could help me plz. Not sure what all info ya need so gonna put what I can find here. I'm runnen a sony computer with
(System Properties)- Windows XP Home edition with SP2 , Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHZ 1.59GHZ, 1.00 GB of RAM

(Local Disk C properties)- Fat 32, Capacity 15.9 GB, used space 14.2 GB, free space 1.70 GB

(Local Disk D Properties)- NTFS, Capacity 60.3 GB, used space 1.82 GB, free space 58.4 GB

Id like to keep disk C as my primary and convert it to NTFS if possible since alot of programs automatically try and install on the disk C.

(1) Is there any way that I can transfer the 60.3 GB to disk C and put the 15.9 GB on disk D? Keeping disk C as my primary and switchiing it to NTFS.

(2) Is there anyway I can transfer all the info on disk C to disk D, and make disk D my primary? So when I download everything goes straight to disk D, since theres so much more room on that disk.

(3) Can I transfer the info from disk C to disk D and just change the names on the disk's from C to D and D to C since disk D is already NTFS and has so much more room?

All in all I'd like to have disk C as my primary with 60.3 GB NTFS if possible.

Hope all the info ya need is here or if ya have any questions plz let me know and ill try to find it. Sorry for the long post didn't know how else to explain it though.

To find the answer for Commando, do this:

1. Click Start and right-click My Computer.
2. Select Manage.
3. In Computer Management, click Disk Management.
4. Maximize the Computer Management window.
5. If you have two physical hard disk drives, you will see one named Disk 0 and one named Disk 1 and one named CD-ROM 0. If you have one LARGE hard drive with two partitions, you will just see Disk 0 and one named CD-ROM 0.

Please use the diskpart utility to gather info. regarding your hard drive partitions, then commando or i will tell you how to go about it:

1. Boot to your Windows XP desktop.

2. Click Start > Run > and type diskpart and press ENTER. (The diskpart utility will run inside the command prompt window.)

3. At the DISKPART> prompt, type list volume (with a space between the words) and press ENTER.

4. Diskpart should list...
VOLUME 0, ltr (drive letter) E, info (information) CD-ROM
VOLUME 1, ltr C, info System
VOLUME 2, ltr D, info Boot

5. Write it all down and then type exit and press ENTER to exit the diskpart utility, then close the command window.

If diskpart lists something different than the above (for example, if it indicates C is not the System partition) let us know. Commando or i will tell you what to do next.

Hold it right there ProgMan, Your drive is fine the way it is now.

FAT32 on C: is easier to manage and converting to NTFS with data on the drive can be risky.

The smaller drive C: is the easier it is to maintain and to image.

So maybe you would like to try this.

Move the My Documents folder to D:

Move your Email folder to D:

Then do some cleaning up.

Set the System Restore cache to 1024Mb for drive C:
Set the IE temporary internet files cache down to a reasonable level. Cut the number of days of IE history down to what you really need.

Then do some serious deleting.

Run Disk Cleanup and remove all but the last restore point. Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files. Remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and carefuly remove their entries from Add-Remove programs.

Then remove the contents of the C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder, the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder, the C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder and the C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Then run chkdsk and defrag.

With a 15.9 Gb capacity C: drive you need a minimum of 15% free-space to run Defrag on so that is 2.39 Gb, and you are a little low there.

Put your paging file (system managed) on drive D: and just leave a small fixed paging file on drive C: say 200 Mb Min & Max.

Now see just how much space you have.

My 80Gb drive has a 10240 Mb (10 Gb) drive C: and that is plenty with the above setup. I normally have about 40% free-space on that drive and I like to keep it that way.

After doing the above clean-up ROUTINE the free-space has increased to 51%.
Ran the Diskpart > list volume command and showed this.

Volume 0 E DVD-ROM 0B
Volume 1 F CD-ROM 0B
Volume 2 C Fat32 Partition 16GB Healthy System
Volume 3 D NTFS Partition 60GB Healthy

I got PowerQuest Partitionmagic 8.0 like Computer-Commando said to get. I read some of the help files but im still lost. If it really doesn't matter I'll stick with Fat32, whatever works is ok with me. I have alotta programs, games, music, and movies taken up alotta room. I have 3 times more space on drive D then I do on C, and it doesn't get used . There was a few programs I installed on drive D, but uninstalledem so drive D was empty till we saw what all can be done . I'll just reinstallem later. I'm thinken when I set it up a few years back I intended to use the NTFS 60GB, but somehow messed up on the drive labels between C and D and never noticed it till now. Don't know if I can SWITCH some of the free space from D to C with partitionmagic or not, since their labeled as partitions. But C is Fat32 and D is NTFS, so not sure if it can be done. You don't need Partition Magic to convert from FAT32 to NTFS.

I made a mistake sometime ago and left drive C: formatted to FAT32 when I had wanted all four partitions to be NTFS. So I just used the convert command to convert it to NTFS.

Just open a command prompt window and type: convert c: /fs:ntfs

In your situation I would do as I said earlier. Move the My Documents folder and Email folder and any other data to D: Clean up the C: drive and make a drive image.

Only convert C: if you feel you really need to. I would just leave it as it is.

It sounds as if you have an 80 Gb drive (Decimal size) which should give you 74.51 Gb (Binary size) of usable space.

Adding 15.9 and 60.3 gives 76.2 Gb. Have you run chkdsk recently (?) as these sizes don't seem to be being reported correctly.

If you want to seperate file types you could shrink the D: partition WITHIN the extended partition and then make two more partitions to give you C:, D: E: & F: , which is what I have.

I have the My Documents and Email folders on D:, Music on E: and Video etc. on F:BTW, I use a program called BootIT NG from TeraByte Unlimited. Cost about US$60.

Essentially it is a boot manager, which I don't need, but it comes with a Partition Resizer which is fast and excellent, Image for Windows, to make drive images from a running system and Image for DOS with which to restore drive images from CDRs or data DVDs.

Four programs in one at $15 a piece!Didn't know if it would be hard to move some free space from D to C or not. Or if I could swapem out to have all that free space on my primary disk. I don't know too much about the technical stuff. If it's gonna be too hard, or a high risk of me messen my comp up, I'll probably just do it the way I had it before, and do like ya said. I'll uninstall alotta my programs from C and reinstallem on D. Just figured it'd be nice to havem all in one place.Prog:

Mac is correct. Now, there are good reasons to convert FAT 32 to NTFS (e.g. it's more stable, it's more secure, it enables you to compress individual files and folders to save space). However, if these features are not important to you, then keeping FAT 32 is your best option.

It looks like you have XP installed on your C: partition. To save space, you may move your My Documents folder to the D: drive. That way, you may have more room for all your programs on the C: partition. To accomplish this:

1. Click Start > My Documents > right-click My Documents and select Properties.

2. In My Documents Properties, click Move... .

3. In Select a Destination, click My Computer to expand the tree.

4. Click drive D: to expand it, then click on the folder where you want your documents to be moved.

5. If you want, click New Folder to create a new folder on drive D: and name it something like Prog's Documents.

6. Click OK. If you are prompted whether or not to move certain files, just click Yes. Wait a few moments while Windows moves the files to the folder on drive D: that you selected.

7. When Windows has completed the task, click OK to close the Select a Destination box and OK to close the My Documents Properties box. The My Documents folder will still be on your start menu (and/or desktop) it will just be linked to the D: parition, where all the documents will now be stored.

8. To move your documents back to the My Documents folder on drive C:, just open My Documents Properties as above and click Restore Default and OK.

Once all your documents have been moved. You may log on to any other account to move the My Documents folder for that user, too. You may have to temporarily change any Limited user accounts to Administrator accounts to make the change. You likely will not be able to move the built-in Guest account My Documents folder without editing the registry. If you have Windows XP Professional, you may create a new Guest account which will allow you to temporarily change it to have administrator privileges so that the My Documents folder may be moved.

Hope that helps,
Doc
Prog:

Other ways to make space on drive C: are...

a. Run the XP disk cleanup utility.
b. Run the XP disk defragmenter.

You may also increase performance by moving the virtual memory pagefile to the D: drive.

Let Mac or i know if you need help with these suggestions.

Switched my bigger programs back to disk D, and moved my documents to D. Just gonna keep installen new programs on disk D. Went away for a few days, just got home yesterday or woulduv answered sooner. Thanks for all the help. No prob! Stop in and see us any time.

Solve : help, windows not opening?

Answer»

I'm not SURE if this questions belong in here and if it doesn't then I'm really sorry but I'm going crazy with my computer, right now I'm on a friends computer since my comp. doesn't open at all...

I don't really know what happened to it, I looked in the basics area thing and couldn't find anything that seemed like what was happening to my computer, I was online last night everything was ok then I opened netscape and there was a monk.dll error, I closed it and went to the netscape folder to look for the monk.dll thing and for some reason I don't know why I opened, then winamp stopped then I closed both and everything was cool! I was again listening to music, instaling netscape all over again and going around some PAGES on IE then I opened MSN and the whole thing stuck, winamp, IE everything and the comp. STARTED making strange noises, then I shutted down...

Then when I went to turn it on again it wouldn't go to the windows, it APPEARED a message saying something like RPL-ROM-FFC=1 then it would go til 200... something like that, I even wrote it down... then now when I try to turn it on it SAYS that there is a disc error and I must press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart the thing, but that's all it says...

Can someone please help me? I have no idea what happened to it can you boot in safe mode?

Solve : "Another application is using this program"?

Answer» WINDOWS XP Pro
P4 3.2 ghz
1 GIG RAM

I was using Printshop 20 to make a greeting card. I finished the project and closed the program. Later, I wanted to open the program again. I clicked the icon and got the above message (i.e., "another application is currently using this application"). I could not access the program as a result.

But nothing else was open. I did "control/alt/delete" to see if anything else was running. Nothing. (Note: if it matters, I had used photoshop elements earlier, but it was closed.)

The only way I could GET back into the program was to turn off the computer and reboot.

Can someone explain this one to me, and let me KNOW how to fix it? Thanks very much in advance!!!

It sounds like the program did not shut down properly. It may not have been listed under Applications on Task Manager but I would bet it was listed under PROCESSES.

If it was in fact under processes then you could have ended the process and not had to reboot.

If this continues, then you should contact support for the application.Okay. Thank you very much.

Hi Flaming and Merlin_2
Thanks a million for immediate response.
I will try the URL.
This is a Dell lap top with only one USB port. I can only use one USB device at a time.

canon USB Printer, IOmega CD-RW drive, occassionally 2megaPix Dig camera

Thanks & regards
MaroonedHi Flaming and Merlin_2

I have solved the problem of my CD-RW (USB).
after long hours of trial and errors realised the following:

Do not unmount the USB device before stopping the device.

Op systems from 98SE onwards have drivers for almost all the Cd, CD-RWs. Let the windows load the drivers. Do not use the Iomega ZIP drive installation disk especially if you are going to load later versions of
ECCD. There are conflict between the older drivers and newer drivers.
This corrupts the drivers.

So the first thing I learned is not to use the manufacturers installation Disc. There are registry hacks etc I learned during this process which are sometimes risky. So the EASIEST way now.

Copy the important files. I used a lapLink and transferred my files to DESK top.

Reformatted disk, reloaded WinME and allowed the system to load drivers for USB CDRW.

Installed later version of ECCD burning software and everyting is OK now.

This took me much less time and Internet cost.

There may be better ways but I have got back my CDRW functional again this way.

Thanks for your help and time

Regards, Marooned

This is an excellent Forum and I will continue to use it

It stays FROZEN on that screen till I hit the power button and hold it for 3 sec before it shuts off =(Is your PC capable of being shut down that way. Not all PCs are, but most newer ones are.

Solve : find duplicates & clean up win xp?

Answer»

I have 4 different hard drives worth of stuff on my computer. From getting new, bigger hard drives and such. I drop and dragged and saved everything to my big hard drive..

Thus I have duplicates of all kinds of stuff including genealogy files. How can I FIND the duplicates and put everything together, in order and GET rid of the duplicates, triplicates?

Thanks in advance.. You could USE a PROG called foldermatch
www.foldermatch.com

otherwise search in explorer for files of a certain type, then sort to find dupes
*.mdb for exampleHello Jan, You could try ToniArts EasyCleaner, which is free. BUT make sure that you DON'T remove ANY duplicate system files as 99.99% ARE usually needed by the Operating System.

Some zero length files (0 bytes) may also be required so don't remove any if you don't know what they are.

I would stick ONLY to the document file duplicates.

Solve : my computer is possessed...?

Answer»

I'm having a wierd PROBLEM, and haven't been able to find any info on it. I built a new computer for my mother-in-law 2 wks ago. Everything on it works great-- except her POP email and WebCT account login. First the email: When I type her name into the user display field, it all looks correct. Same with the signature option. When sent, the receiver sees that the email is from MFEMF MFEMF (replacing her first and last name) and the signature is the same problem. When I apply her settings to MY email software, it sends as it should. When she uses the net version of her account, it works fine. When I go into her email program and change the user display to anything else, it sends as it should. If I add her name to it, her name, and her name only, comes out as MFEMF MFEMF, everytime, and everything else is correct. Does this MAKE sense? The secondary problem is that she can't log onto WebCT for her online school. WebCT says "invalid user name" . Her user name is her first and last name. Her XP is registered in her first and last name. Somehow these are interconnected, but how? Does anyone have any earthly idea what is CAUSING this? Thank you for any suggestions...

End of my rope,
jjw3For the second problem, you should contact the school for a username/password reset... Also, it would be a good idea to scan for Spyware and viruses at the same time...

[glb]Flame[/glb]have you contacted an exocirst? oh i am funny!? Sorry i don't really KNOW pop3, i just get my hotmail in OutlookLike I said, the two problems are interconnected/interrelated. Changing the username at the school will only go around the problem, not fix it. If anyone else has any ideas, let me know. For example, where do I find (within XP) information concerning the activation (user registration info)? If I see that it is incorrect, then maybe I could change it. Do you see where I'm GOING with this? It's got something to do with the computer itself- not the email program; not the WebCT site. Thanks to those that have replied.

Solve : Winsock Module Problem?

Answer»

I am using Win98SE. I recently switched to a DSL internet connection, and networked 2 computers for file-sharing. I was using ZoneAlarm as my firewall, and that apparently caused a problem.
ZoneAlarm prevented several NECESSARY system files from operating. By the time I caught and corrected the problem, the damage was done. I now repeatedly get a message saying
"Error in Winsock Module. Connection Structure is unknown. Possible reason: your firewall and/or antivirus application BLOCKS the system file (and one of 3 system file names comes up here)"
I uninstalled both ZoneAlarm and the antivirus program, and I ran a registry cleanup program, but the messages keep appearing. Everything SEEMS to work okay, but the messages are very annoying.

Any suggestions on how to repair the Winsock Module?
TomUse this at your own risk.

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257

Good luck. I've solved my problem . My thanks to you who tried to help. The problem was a virus- Sober-H. I got a message 2 DAYS ago sayoing that something I had sent had been blocked. The message sender was unclear. I was told to click for more information. Stupidly, I did.

The virus is a worm which does a number of random things. In my case, it presented these false error messages.

It ALSO can get to your address book, and send messages, under a phony name, to spread the virus.
Be aware.

Solve : HELP! Taskbar disappears for no reason?

Answer»

HELP! Please! I have a huge problem that no one seems to be able to answer. Just recently I had a backdoor virus on my computer. It was removed completely yesterday. Anyway. Since I got the virus my taskbar (which is in the locked (not hidden) position) just up and disappears for no reason at all. I have to restart my computer at least 6 or more times a day just to get it back. It is really annoying. I didn 't have this problem before the virus and now I don't know what to do. Please email me with HELP!Scan again... Sounds like ANOTHER virus...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Nicole:

Do you remember the name of the virus?

I don't remember the name of the virus. I had my brother remove it manually because Norton couldn't and I asked my about the taskbar. He said it didn't have anything to do with the virus. So here I am having to reboot numerous times a day just to use it. RIGHT now it's GONE. Strange thing is that the windows I have up won't go down any further than where the taskbar stops when it is visible. I don't know what to do. I tried scanning last night to see if there was another virus but nothing came up. It's really beginning to frustrate me. One minute its there and then the next it's gone. It's a "far shot", but what about Windows updates? Have you tried running one by going to HTTP://www.microsoft.com ?

[glb]Flame[/glb]HI,

I had this problem with an old machine with insufficient memory to maintain the Windows Explorer Shell with XP pro.
One quick fix was to bring up task manager and where it says new task click on it and type "explorer.exe" without quotes.

As I say it may only be temporary but it might be worth a try. It might stop the necessity to reboot all the time.

Solve : CPU Usage Unusually high?

Answer»

Under the WINDOWS Task Manager, when monitoring cpu usage, i've noticed is incredibly high. I only use my computer for administrative work (MS Office, not MUCH else) and mp3s. When just idly running programs, the level is around 12-15%. However, whenever I start a new program, it jumps to 100% for a COUPLE seconds then FALLING back to the former level. I am running a fast enough computer for this (1.1 GHz) and have 512K RAM. Any advice??
Jumping to 100% for a few seconds is nothing to be alarmed about, most programs will cause a spike like that when they start. If it remains at that level then you will need to INVESTIGATE that problem. You never did tell us which operating system you are using...
