Solve : Problem connecting to internet?

Answer»

Hi I am having problem in connecting to internet. In Speedup my PC it is shown "Unable to connect to server". My connection is a modem router (Artnet) connected with a 8 port ethernet switch to a second computer running win 98se. the other one is running win xp pro. The problem is when I tried to go to 192.168.1.1 it could not open in IE.(connection to internet was not available so I tried to connect to see the setting runs out or not.). In my opinion if it could open in IE I will be able to connect to internet. The funny thing is that I could connect to internet in the win 98se. computer normally. I tried using LS fix, in the box it show the following items listed :mswsock.dll-tcip, winrnr.dll-ntds, nl isp.dll-[PROTOCOL handler], rsvps.dll-[protocol handler]. I check the box (I know what I am doing check box) and start,it did a repair. After I tried to go online it still could not connected. I have scan with adaware, spybot and giant antispyware and also a virus scan still no help. Please someone help me out.
mengchee:

Try restarting the Windows 98 computer.  If that doesn't work, try powering down the router, waiting a few minutes, then powering it up again, then restart the Windows 98 computer again.  If that doesn't work, do this from the Windows 98 desktop:

1. Click Start and select Run.
2. Type COMMAND in the Run dialog box.
3. At the command prompt, type IPCONFIG /RELEASE and press ENTER.  Then type IPCONFIG /RENEW and press ENTER.
4. Restart the Windows 98 computer.

If that doesn't work, go to the command prompt window again and type IPCONFIG /ALL and write everything down that is displayed.  Next, start the Windows XP machine, click Start and select Run and type CMD and press ENTER. Then, in the CMD.EXE window, type IPCONFIG /ALL and write everything down.

Leave a post for us with the full IP configuration for both the Windows 98 and XP computers.  We'll let you know what to do next.

Hoping to hear from you at the soonest. Thanks.

From what I see the Subnet maskes are not matching one the first adapter I see 255.255.0.0

on the second I see 255.255.255.0

these must match for the computers to talk to each other. Thanks for your reply. I am not experience in this matter,is it I have to change it to 255.255.255.0
only in win xp mc. Lately I came across a fix call winstock xp fix can I use this to fix the problem. appreciate to hear from you all. Thanks.So... Let me understand: you have 2 computers, a modem and a switch. The 2 computers are connected to the switch, each one through a cable... Or the Windows XP computer is connected to the Windows 98 computer?  How is your modem connected to your little network? By a cable to the switch, or by a cable to one of the computers?
For your Windows XP computer you don't have the DNS set and also you don't have set the gateway address. It seems to me that your Xp computer is connected to the 98 computer (because they are both in the same network, 169.254.0.0) ... Tell us exactly how each component is connected. Where is connected the modem; where and how are connected the computers...
I'm confused...
Thanks viking for your reply. Well I actually do not know how to explain to you, I will describe in layman term to you. The line from my house phone (telecom line) goes to the modem (DSL) > from the modem (LAN) the cable goes to the switch hub (8 ports switch hub) > from the switch ports one cable goes to Win xp mc. > ANOTHER from the switch port goes to win 98 mc. I hope you are clear and further clarification if needed please ask.The 169.xxx.xxxx.xxx address tells me that you have your network card to automatically get an address from a DHCP server, normally on a router in a home enviroment.  You mention a hub/switch which cannot normally give you an address which connects to a dsl modem which can give you an address.  So I will assume that the dsl modem is setup to only give out 1 address, so your second computer cannot get a correct address in the 192.168.1.x (you ip on the Win 98 box tells me the dsl modem is the dhcp server).

A computer with the default 169.xxx.xxx.xxx address is not going to find any other computers, router interfaces, Internet anything.

So if you can configure your dsl modem from your 98 box to give out more than one address and your cabling is correct you should then have no problem connecting.

If this is not allowed or an extra charge from your provider you will want to set it up so the XP box is the one that gets the address from the modem and then enable Internet Connection Sharing on it.  Or purchase your own HARDWARE firewall or router and use it with or in place of the hub and let it give addresses to both.

Hi gussery thanks very much for your lengthly topic. Yes it was setup to have my network card to automatically get an address from a DHCP server, normally on a router in a home enviroment. Regarding the hub/switch (I am not sure whether it was called by this name,It provides more ports so you can connect it to a second computer as this is what it was for my used ). One thing I wish to clarify is that it is working normally a long time without problem. I am not sure whether it was interupted by antivirus or spyware scan which may remove something from it (my opinion). Another thing which I have LEFT out is that the win xp is set as secondarly slave and the other Hdd.is set as primary (WinME.OS.) and this ME.can be connected to internet really strange (even though the DOS screen shown different from the Win XP as above given ipcong/all. I am confused now and do not know what to do. I am now using WinME(primary hdd) on the same mc. where the XP (secondary hdd.) is to go online. I hope to hear further suggestion on what to do from you all. I am not experienced in setup in this matter and have difficulty in understanding what you mentioned. Thanks.
                       What does *net*...........report....try *ping*ing your own server.........[Msdos prompt* commands]or have a look here>http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/

and always check firewall settings..?and also more info on dsl modem.........is it via a usb ...you may have exceeded the  usb.. bandwidth.... you can try right-click on my computer icon/properties+universal host controller properties box...and untick the usb correction box...Hi merin 2 I tried ping 192.168.1.1 in win xp it was not successfull I got timed out message on both IP. I could ping both IP in win ME. ( ME. is set as primary master). Anything else I could try. Please someone help. Thanks merin 2.http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.htmlThanks gussery I have tried what you have mentioned including LS fix to no effect. Hoping to hear from you all for further suggestion.Your problem is that you are not getting an address from the DHCP server.  You can't ping the 192.168.xxx.xxx addresses with the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx addresses.
So your...
network card is bad or....
the drivers are bad or ....
the TCP stack is hosed or....
the cable is bad or....
the port on the switch is bad or ....
the network is not set to obtain addresses automatically or...
your service provider has limited you to one NAT address on the modem or....
you have some malware highjacking your card or...

Have you done a ping to the local loopback address (127.0.0.1)?  That may tell you whether the problem is internal to the pc or stack or external to the network, but not always.

Hi gussery let me go step by step as I said I am not good in configuration of this matter. I tried to ping 127.0.0.1 it was successfull I got a reply from the ping. Your problem is that you are not getting an address from the DHCP server etc. can you please give a walk through how to check and configure the items mentioned. I would like to pinpoint what is the cause as I am not having this problem, what happen it let to this changes I am surprised. I hope to hear futher help from you.
