Solve : Can not boot from HDD? |
Answer» A few days ago I obtained a computer virus. I used all the popular tools to remove the problem, and to clean the registry. After doing this, I discovered that I could no longer BOOT from my hard drive boot disk. I have two identical Dell Dimension computers running WixXP PRO, so I created a bootable floppy disk and copied three files onto the floppy. The three files that I copied were Boot.ini, Ntldr, and NTdetect.com. When I inserted this floppy into my damaged computer, and booted from the floppy, everything CAME up fine, and I was able to access all of my data and programs. |

Solve : HELP Please... stressed out, cant find problem? |
Answer» Seeking help from all you computer guru's. I go to the extra link on the left side of page and brings up another age verification page, this is where the problem starts... the site boots me back to the home page.Just followed the link on homepage, extras and redirecting back and it happens on my firefox browser too... So what should be the actual page when clicking the extras? Edit : Have tried the same in IE8 and is now loading a NEW page and... Success! It prompts me now to Login for an email and a password. Is this the next page you are having problem with? Yes that is the page... should TAKE you to the gear side of things, sounds like you can load it and I can't. Just want to figure it out... I do appreciate all help I have been given. Need a solution. Got to be something simple, I hope anyways.Try right clicking on the extras link and choose open in new tab. Quote from: PyroGraphix on March 17, 2011, 04:41:28 PM She claims shes/Miller had no complaints for this matter and said if there was a problem with the site she would have heard about it, but I was the only complaint. I don't know why, but to me this always sounds like an asspull when support staff say "Well, nobody else has reported a problem" or "I haven't heard any complaints". Well, you're hearing one NOW aren't you? In any case, use IE and it should work, judging by the others who have tried and succeeded.Try to add the site to your compatiblity list in IE Right clicking link does not work... it brings up seperate window anyways Added the site to the compatibility list... still no go. Was at work today... got on their computer (I am a sub contractor, so I work out of a van) and the site loaded just fine. Gotta be a problem in my machines... just downloaded IE8 on desktop, and still won't load. What am I missing? |

Solve : help! full HD and unmountable boot volume!? |
Answer» I am on a mac because my pc won't boot. that it will do no good to try to connect it via cable to another PC Unless Windows can be loaded, it will most likely not detect the Laptop.Raptor!!! I tried to talk with Dell about the error code... and they wanted to sell me a Software Warranty for 2 years for $280 or 50 bucks for 72 hours on one incident. They sited the fact that I need the continued support to HANDLE spyware and viruses, etc. Like I don't have anti-spyware and anti-virus software to do that! I went to the Microsoft site and found this info about the error code. If you'd rather read it online, here is the link: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;297185&spid=1173&sid=1157 I am reaaaalllly not liking the last line of this article about losing data. BTW, I got the stop error ending ED which appears to be hardware cable related?? According to THIS, it could be some cable that I have to have replaced? Arrrggghhhhhhhh. Any comments? Again, *bowing in gratitude,* thanks for your time. Angie >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "STOP 0x000000ED UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" Error Message When You Restart Your Computer or Upgrade to Windows XP View products that this article applies to. Article ID : 297185 Last Review : October 30, 2003 Revision : 1.0 This article was previously published under Q297185 On this page SYMPTOMS CAUSE RESOLUTION UDMA Controller Damaged File System STATUS MORE INFORMATION APPLIES TO SYMPTOMS When you first restart your computer during the upgrade to Windows XP or when you start Windows XP, you may receive the following error message, where aaaaaaaa, bbbbbbbb, cccccccc, and dddddddd are hexadecimal numbers that may vary: STOP 0x000000ED (0xaaaaaaaa,0xbbbbbbbb,0xcccccccc,0xdddddddd) UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME NOTE: If you receive this error message when you restart the computer for the first time during an upgrade to Windows XP, your original operating system still works correctly. In some cases, a message appears on the BIOS report screen that states that the wrong cable is in use, but you may not see this message on computers that have a fast startup time. Back to the top CAUSE This behavior can occur if either of the following conditions is true: • Your computer uses an Ultra Direct Memory Access (UDMA) hard disk controller, and the following conditions are true: • You use a standard 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive to the controller instead of the required 80-wire, 40-pin cable. • The basic input/output system (BIOS) settings are configured to force the faster UDMA modes.• The file system is damaged and cannot be mounted. Back to the top RESOLUTION To resolve this behavior, use the appropriate method. UDMA Controller If your computer uses a UDMA hard disk controller, use the following procedures: • Replace the 40-wire cable with an 80-wire UDMA cable. • In the BIOS settings for your computer, load the 'Fail-Safe' default settings, and then reactivate the most frequently used options such as USB Support. Damaged File System If the second parameter (0xbbbbbbbb) of the Stop error is 0xC0000032, then the file system is damaged. If this is the case, restart the computer to the Recovery Console, and then use the chkdsk /r command to repair the volume. After you repair the volume, check your hardware to isolate the cause of the file system damage. To do this, use the following steps: 1. Start your computer with the Windows startup disks, or with the Windows CD-ROM if your computer can start from the CD-ROM drive. 2. When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to select the repair option. 3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console. 4. Type the administrator password when you are prompted to do so. NOTE: If no administrator password exists, press ENTER. 5. At the command prompt, on the drive where Windows is installed, type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER. 6. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer. For additional information about how to use the Recovery Console in Windows XP, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 314058 Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console If this procedure does not work, REPEAT it and use the fixboot command in step 5 instead of the chkdsk /r command. Back to the top STATUS This behavior is by design. Back to the top MORE INFORMATION The purpose of this behavior is to prevent potential data loss due to the use of an incorrect IDE cable for the faster UDMA modes or due to continued access to a drive on which the file system is damaged. Note that a variety of issues can cause file system damage, from faulty hardware to software configuration problems or viruses. You can run Chkdsk /r at a command prompt to resolve the file system damage, but you may lose some data. Try using bootable CD from sysinternals ERD Commander. Winternals also makes these bootable CD that will allow to examine the entire disk and still copy data to a CD burner etc. You basicly will have a stripped down version Windows XP on a CD. Booting of your Standard XP cd, you could select the console tools. Try rebuilding your BOOT records, reset your active boot partition etc. You could also schedule chkdsk to run on next boot etc. Quote 1. Replace the 40-wire cable with an 80-wire UDMA cable. Neither of these resolutions should result in data loss. Quote Try using bootable CD from sysinternals ERD Commander. Winternals also makes these bootable CD that will allow to examine the entire disk and still copy data to a CD burner etc. You basicly will have a stripped down version Windows XP on a CD. WELL, SINCE I HAVE NO XP CD, I can't get into the BIOS settings... and it sounds like to change cables, I'd have to go through Dell. I did check into the bootable CD's. But Gustaff, I have another question for you. I went to the site... and it costs $149 for the ERD Commander CD. What I need to be sure of is this: The website for this says it works WITH another running PC. I don't have another PC... only a Mac. You mentioned that I can use this CD to see my data and burn to a CD burner. The website says this can be done over a network with another PC. Can I for sure boot this CD and then burn my data to CD's on the internal CD burner or an external DVD burner attached to my laptop? Once I back it all up, I can try running the utilities that will fix the corrupt boot files. Thanks for answering!!!! Quote WELL, SINCE I HAVE NO XP CD, I can't get into the BIOS settings... and it sounds like to change cables, I'd have to go through Dell. You do not need the bootable CD to enter the BIOS. I suggest that you heed attention to what I write in the future. You can obtain IDE/ATA cables from any dedicated computer store.Raptor!!! How can I "HEED ATTENTION" when I obviously don't know HOW to get to the BIOS settings. I read over your replies, and didn't see any instructions. I would have tried that had I known how. In my call to Dell today, I was told that it has nothing to do with the BIOS, although they did upgrade that when they had my laptop there for service. You first said to read the article... and I did... about running the chkdsk thing. Everything in the article you gave me were things I couldn't do because I don't have the XP CD. When you said to contact the mfg about the error code, I did. I found the instructions online as I posted here. FYI, while talking with the Dell tech today, I was told there is NO cable of any kind. It plugs directly into the board, so the 40-wire vs. the 80-wire issue only applies to DESKTOPS. Had DELL SAID this fix applied only to Desktops, it would have been nice. When I asked about the error code saying it meant to replace the cable, I was told, "Don't pay any attention to that. Doesn't apply to a laptop." I DON"T have access to a Desktop, so I could not try that suggestion you gave either. I am honestly TRYING to do what you suggest. It was DELL that said that if I boot from any CD and try to "fix" anything, I could lose data. Doesn't matter if I can't try any of those fixes without the XP CD. Finally, I wrote that I can't get to the BIOS settings without the CD. You wrote that I don't need it, but didn't tell me how to get to it. Now, whether or not it's true, Dell said this problem has nothing to do with the BIOS. I would have tried what you said if I knew how.... especially since there will be no data loss. Today, I called a local computer company and asked them if they would take the hard drive out and hook it up to one of their laptops and let me back up to a DVD Burner. To my surprise, they said YES! When asked about charges, they said not more than $60. Yessssss! Better then the $149 Commander CD. So, after going around the world, it looks like I may have a solution, Just hoping the HD is intact... and I see no reason why it wouldn't be. I will be going Thursday to the computer repair store to try to do all of the above. AGAIN, Raptor, I am thankful for your help, but I am NOT ignoring what you say. A little worried that things I do might make it impossible to recover data, but who wouldn't be? IF you think I should: In the BIOS settings for your computer, load the 'Fail-Safe' default settings, and then reactivate the most frequently used options such as USB Support. ... I will try that. But I don't know how. I was able to get into SETUP on this laptop by hitting the F1 key... and able to boot from a CD [IF I HAD ONE] by hitting the F12 key. I am planning to go on Thursday to try the fix I wrote about above. But obviously... to understand it for the future and possibly fix things before and not have to go, I'd love to TRY what you say. IF you think fixing the BIOS won't solve my problem, this is all moot anyway. Sorry for taking up space here unneccessarily. Thanks, Angieyou could try this to recover some files>>http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/download.htm and see if it helps remove some of you files to help you hard drive....... you may wish to consider this in future>>http://joelshoemaker.com/computer/mac/mxpfs.htmlYou do not need the Windows XP cd in order to run chkdsk. It is run from a Boot disk. Boot Diskettes can be obtained here. To enter the BIOS, you will have to press a certain key at POST. However, this key differs per BIOS. Read this article for more information on how to enter, use and configure the BIOS. Keep in mind that data loss occurs due to these factors: 1. The Format command -- In the MS-DOS prompt or Windows (If non-boot volume) 2. A damaged Hard Disk Drive -- Due to physical abuse, power surge or simply wear and tear. 3. Manually deleted files. -- The files user deletes himself. Switching IDE cables, entering the BIOS and other changes that may be deemed neccessary can not remove files. I am not certain what it is you wish to do. 1. Do you wish to back-up your files and keep the Laptop? 2. Do you wish to have the Laptop function again? 3. Do you wish to do as the Microsoft knowledge base article has suggested? 4. Do you wish to back-up your files and discard the Laptop?Raptor, First, thanks for answering again. Secondly, thank you for the link to bootdisk.com. Great site! Puts everything in easy-to-understand terms. Still have a problem in that I have no PC to make the boot disks on: formatted on an XP PC. Keep in mind that you can also format a disk in XP and then use it on another PC like a win9X pc to make this disk.][/list] All I have is my husband's MAC. The good thing is that when I get everything backed up and start over, I will make these boot disks so I don't end up in the lurch again. I will go ahead and go to that computer store and take them up on the offer to back up there. You asked what my ultimate plan is: I want to backup the files on the laptop and keep it. It's fast enough... 1.5 GHz and has a small [for me!] 66 gig hard drive. If I would keep the data archived OFF the laptop and on DVD's & CD's the HD size should be fine as well. Unless you or someone thinks there are other reasons to upgrade... it's 3 years old... then I'm pretty happy with it. It has an upgraded [better quality] 17" screen... CD burner... etc. H-E-A-V-Y, but I can deal with the weight. The best case scenerio would be to back up my files tomorrow... wipe the HD clean and reinstall... AFTER I get the replacement XP CD's from Microsoft. And in the future, make sure my data is backed up. I will make these boot disks so I don't get in this predicament again. Thanks, too, for the recap about the missing files. I believe Dell was trying to "sell" me on their software service plan... but the Dell tech is the one who said that if I used the recovery panel/chkdsk command that I could overwrite and lose some of my files. Take care and I will let you know how it goes after I backup tomorrow. Sounds like it is the only option since I don't have another PC. If you know how I can use this MAC to make the CD's, then tell me. The owner of the software company that sells the Commander CD said I just can NOT do it with a MAC. I think years ago when we had MACS, we used to be able to read PC data much easier than PC's could read the MAC data. Now I hear the tables have turned. Thanks for helping, and thanks for this site! What a great source to those in dire straits! Angie |

Solve : XP service pack 2 Problem? |
Answer» Hi I have been running service pack 1 for along time because i heard there was problems with the 2 pack You have been misinformed. Quote am constantly getting diffrent messages pop up saying this exe or this program needs to access the internet or upgrade do you want allow this program to access the internet, it says this may be because you have recently upgraded 1. Do you have a firewall installed? 2. Is the Windows SP2 firewall enabled?Yes Windows firewall is enabled and i also use another one wich is enabled, but im not sure if to allow these pop ups access to the internet. How do i know if its safe to allow it, could it be an intruder.Download adaware and scan .......or even try this>http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html Quote Yes Windows firewall is enabled and i also use another one wich is enabled, but im not sure if to allow these pop ups access to the internet. How do i know if its safe to allow it, could it be an intruder. If you open a program, and it needs to connect to the Internet (Such as Outlook Express) it is safe to CLICK 'yes' and 'remember this setting'. But if the request for permission comes when you are not using any program at all, or you are using an application that should in no way be connected to the Internet, it is advised to say 'no' and tag 'remember this setting' This goes for all firewalls. However, buttons such as yes, no and remember this setting may be given different names. I suggest you install, configure and use the following applications to see what could be causing all the requests for Internet access and most LIKELY remove the cause. Microsoft Antispyware -- Antispyware. Windows XP Home and Professional only. Spy bot Search & Destroy -- Antispyware. |

Solve : Computer Fax Not Receiving ALL incoming faxes? |
Answer» We have installed a fax modem to our computer at work. We have typically have no trouble receiving or sending faxes. However, occasionally we will not receive a fax that the person says went through. When we switch the line back to the standard fax machine, it comes through fine. My boss wants to just keep it on the fax machine to avoid the problem. However, I feel like that would be taking a step in the wrong direction because the fax modem is so convenient. Does anyone have any suggestions or explanations?Has anyone checked with the "sender" of one or more of the faxes that do NOT come through to see what kind of a message they are getting at the conclusion of their "send"? If they are getting an indication that it was sent/received OK then you cannot continue to use the fax modem as obviously that would have adverse business consequences. If they are getting some sort of a "FAILURE" message that is a frustration for them but if should prompt further action on their part. This can be (from my own experience ) a problem involving the SENDERS ISP which can be corrected by them. However ALSO from my own experience the fix may not last and will have to be repeated (by them). This suggestion is obviously based on the assumption that the fauly faxes are being generated via a computer based method or alternatively via a dial in long distance phone system. As an example of the latter where the sender subscribes to a system where they must dial into a phone company before accessing a call to a specific phone/fax number. Many long distance phone plans involve this type of connection.truenorthSupposedly they are saying that it says it went through on the other end. Sometimes we get one page & sometimes we don't get any. I had read somewhere that sometimes the OLDER fax machines could transmit the fax fast enough for the computer modems so it disconnects the fax. I am wondering if that is the case because it seems like the ones that come from businesses come through fine, but the ones that come from individuals are the ones that we have problems with. Do you think if I put a splitter on the fax line to where both the fax machine & the modem are plugged in that it would be "smart enough" to send it there if it won't come over on the computer line? Otherwise we may just have to have 2 incoming fax numbers. I just hate to do that because all of our business cards & letterhead have our fax number. Any additional thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for the prior input. Yes the aspect of the problem being from a private sender (probably on an older device is exactly what can be at the root of the issue --or a routing issue with their communications provider). I doubt that installing a "splitter" will solve it as i don't think the problem is at your end. It will likely be at their end. I would reccommend a 2 line system except how are you going to determine which number to advise them to use? Unless you know who is consistently having the problem ( a regular correspondent) as opposed to an unknown sender. You might want to have a chat with your ISP (for the computer based faxes) and see if you can set up a test of a send from a known sender that has the issue and have them monitor the transmission and have the sender's provider do the same. I have solved the issue (often temporarily ) by doing exactly that procedure. truenorthThey could be lying....just sayin.Always a possibility i suppose. But i have had exactly this same problem myself (i access my sending of faxes via a remote phone connection from an older multi function machine) and through INTERACTION with the recipient and my providers we determined that routing via the providers was at the basis of the problem. I received the indication of fax sent OK at end of transmission but it was NOT received. Sometimes the fix (done by my provider )stuck and sometimes it did only for a while and needed to be done again. truenorth |

Solve : Computer won't recognize XP disc? |
Answer» Well it does and it doesn't. But it won't go into setup. Was working on parent's computer trying to REFORMAT and start fresh. Done it many times. They had System Commander software installed which I'm not familiar with. It kept popping up and wouldn't allow me to go into bios. So I used a WD floppy and wiped drive. |

Solve : Older partitioned PC; C drive filling up w/updates; how do I delete partitions?? |
Answer» My machine, which is about 7 years old: XP Home, SP3; Pentium 4, 2.60 GHz; 1 GB RAM; I think it's a 100GB HD. ...I turned off system restore, restarted computer, then un-checked sysresote to reactivate it. I gained me about 100MBDo not delete the $AVG folder, it's part of the AVG configuration; AVG may not allow deletion, besides that's not in the location I specified. Just use this: http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_hotfix_backup.htm These are the ones to delete: You're not removing the Updates, only the Backups that the Update creates. Quote from: DennisT on April 10, 2011, 11:00:00 AM How do I move My Doc's to another partition? How to Change the Default Location of the My Documents FolderSoybean's tip on moving My Doc's to another Drive segment worked slick and easy. Thanks. That's done, but there wasn't too much in MD anyway. So far, I've tripled my free space on drive C, but it's still under 1 Gig. So I need to expand the C partition, (if I don't eliminate partions altogether - but I guess I'll do whichever is easier). I used the doug knox fix for MS duplicated updates. That gained me a bit, but not much. (And, yes, I unchecked system restore, restarted, then put system restore back on line...adding an initial restore point) Thank you again. I think I'm down to dealing with the partition issue. BARRING any quick feedback any of you might give, I expect to download your, "Partition Tool," wherever I find it, and see what that looks like. Perhaps it's self-explanatory. Dennis Quote from: DennisT on April 10, 2011, 05:39:44 PM I expect to download your, "Partition Tool," wherever I find it, ...See the link in my previous post. Perhaps it's self-explanatory.I think you'll find its interface rather intuitive; in other words, it will become apparent when you see it. But, take your time and post back if you have questions on using it. Thanks, Soybean: I was just reading their site. Lots of info. I think I'll paste it in Word and print a copy. At first look, it doesn't look too dangerous to do. Before I try it, I need to move some old railroad files off my Image sector for safe keeping. I needed to do it anyway. It'll be a day at least for me to slowly wade through it. Dennis |

Solve : Control Panel Icon Changed - Can't Change It Back? |
Answer» SOMEHOW my control panel icon on the XP start menu got changed to the Windows 98 low-resolution one and it sticks out like a sore thumb. I have tried rebuilding icons without it changing back. Is there anyway I can get the Windows XP high resolution control panel icon back?right click on desktop......change the theme from windows classic......back to winxp......see if it does it..Hi Merlin and thanks for the suggestion. However, the procedure was not SUCCESSFUL. I think something changed my registry entries but I am not sure. Any other ideas?Gary M. Pelat....... Right click on the control panel icon ....and choose properties.......then click on shortcut tab......then click on change icon ....choose the one you want and then click apply and ok .....Why do you suggest the registry has been changed .......were you changing things ? let us know dl65 Hi again. I just speculated about the registry, I haven't manually changed anything. I can drag the control panel icon from the start menu onto the desktop and change the icon there. But then I can't drag it back onto the start menu. Also, there is no properties on the right click of an icon when it is on the start menu. I appreciate anything you can think of.either chose the f8 on boot .....chose last GOOD config....or chose safe mode and in the cmd prompt type sfc/scanow or the reg cmd......it will bring up a list like reg/restore etc.......or even this > http://aumha.org/regfiles.htm icon repair reg patch..........options.. |

Solve : Improper Dismount on a Mac, Windows Now Shows My External as Unformatted? |
Answer» I've tried to research this problem on this forum and many others, and no one seems to be having the problem I'm having... So I plugged my Windows-formatted (not sure which way) 400GB Seagate external HD which was about 75% full, into a Mac via USB. Possibly due to me bumping the USB cord while plugged into the Mac, an improper dismount occurred. HOWEVER, I was not actively transferring files to or from the external at the time of the improper dismount. Upon immediately plugging the external back into the Mac, the Mac said it couldn't read the drive. So I then plugged the external into my laptop running XP. Windows DOES recognize the drive (it's GIVEN a drive letter in My Computer), but Windows says the external isn't formatted - and the drive no longer says "Seagate." I've had this happen to me before (years ago) and a classmate did something which made Windows recognize the external's partition as being formatted - and all the files were still on there. Is there anything I can do? I REALLY hope a STUPID Mac didn't erase all of my precious files. An improper dismount from a Windows machine never hurt me before... Thanks in advance for any and all help!Try Testdisk http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDiskAfter exhausting all other options with no success, I finally tried TestDisk. As I'm not familiar with the program, what does it mean when it offers to "Load" the partition? Does that mean simply showing me what's there, or actually overriding files? I FIRST allowed TestDisk to analyze and search for a partition on my external, and it said it found one...but there were no other details. I'm afraid to "Load" what it thinks is a partition, and accidentally erase what's on the external... Any help/suggestions? Also, how does Recuva stand up to TestDisk? (http://www.piriform.com/recuva)Recuva is very good. It can get almost anything back as long as the drive is semireadable. |
