Solve : Improper Dismount on a Mac, Windows Now Shows My External as Unformatted?

Answer» I've tried to research this problem on this forum and many others, and no one seems to be having the problem I'm having...

So I plugged my Windows-formatted (not sure which way) 400GB Seagate external HD which was about 75% full, into a Mac via USB.

Possibly due to me bumping the USB cord while plugged into the Mac, an improper dismount occurred.  HOWEVER, I was not actively transferring files to or from the external at the time of the improper dismount.

Upon immediately plugging the external back into the Mac, the Mac said it couldn't read the drive.

So I then plugged the external into my laptop running XP.  Windows DOES recognize the drive (it's GIVEN a drive letter in My Computer), but Windows says the external isn't formatted - and the drive no longer says "Seagate."

I've had this happen to me before (years ago) and a classmate did something which made Windows recognize the external's partition as being formatted - and all the files were still on there.

Is there anything I can do?  I REALLY hope a STUPID Mac didn't erase all of my precious files.  An improper dismount from a Windows machine never hurt me before...

Thanks in advance for any and all help!Try Testdisk
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDiskAfter exhausting all other options with no success, I finally tried TestDisk.  As I'm not familiar with the program, what does it mean when it offers to "Load" the partition?  Does that mean simply showing me what's there, or actually overriding files?

I FIRST allowed TestDisk to analyze and search for a partition on my external, and it said it found one...but there were no other details.

I'm afraid to "Load" what it thinks is a partition, and accidentally erase what's on the external...  Any help/suggestions?

Also, how does Recuva stand up to TestDisk?  (http://www.piriform.com/recuva)Recuva is very good.  It can get almost anything back as long as the drive is semireadable.
