Solve : OK I am SCREWED! XP will not boot and PC is now DEAD I messed up a sys32 file!?

Answer»

OK I F'd up big time, and now the PC is dead!    Here is what is going on... My housemates Dad's Desktop had some issues and I took it on myself to try and fix it.  It is an older tower PC (circa 2003-05?)  Anyways, the OS is Windows XP Pro with all the service packs (SP3?).

My first challenge was that this error message "GetfDriveLayOut: CreateFile fail ! The system cannot find the file specified" would keep showing up.  Then this same PC has become incredibly slow.

I figured out that the Error Message was coming from the Via Raid program.  OK, Yes the mother board has Via Raid on it. I did these steps to remove VIA RAID by un-checking the RaidTool entry from the XP Pro Start-up Directory.  Here is how I did that:

Click Start > Run > Type msconfig

Select the Startup tab.

Uncheck the RaidTool entry.

(O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RaidTool] C:\Program Files\VIA\RAID\raid_tool.exe)

Reboot the computer.

NOW on TOP of this problem... The PC was/is infected with the D*% "RE-DIRECT VIRUS" .  Every time anyone tries to use either Google, Yahoo or FoxFire (or other browsers), EVERYTHING gets re-directed to random unwanted & unknown websites.

I am using Avira AntiVirus Personal Edition (have faith in Avira).  But it did not find or remove the "Re-direct" Virus!

OK here is WHERE I messed up....  I was searching the web trying to find a solution to the "Re-direct Virus"  I found a site where a GUY said that he determined that the Atapi.sys file was at fault.  This guy said he copied Atapi.sys from another PC he has and wrote over the Atapi.sys on the infected PC.  He said that it "fixed the issue".... So guess what I did?  Yep i tried the same thing, but in doing so I did something wrong and now the file is corrupted!  Yeah I SCREWED UP!

Now the PC won't perform a full boot.  What it does is "loop"  meaning it gets to a point then re-boots automatically.  And does not allow XP to open.  OK, I could go into set-up using the "del" key but the F or F8 or F9 key attempts did not open "help" or other fix choices?

Then the computer seemed to lock up.  Hitting the off button did not turn the PC off, so to shut it down, I used the toggle switch on the Power supply.  When i tried to turn the PC back on, NOTHING!  I THINK I killed the Power Supply.

My THOUGHTS are this... I need to try a different PS.  Then if that is the fix, then I will need some advice on how to fix the corrupt Atapi.sys file problem.  (Will I need a recovery disc or will I use the XP disc?).

Then... When i get the PC back up and runnibg XP again, I will need some help from the malware experts to rid this PC of that D*% "RE-DIRECT VIRUS"!!!

SYSTEM:
Running Windows XP Professional w/SP3
(2) each Maxtor Hard Drives

Skill Level: Not as good as I used to be (obviously) !!

Please help with this if you can.  My apologies for the long post.   I mean I really Hope there is "HOPE" here>>>  richard
