Answer» Hi I wish to upgrade from win98 to winxp. (not full install) How much space do u think I should do a partition? I have a 20GB harddisk available. What would be the normal procedure before I begin? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!read more here >>>>.http://www.winxpfix.com/page8.htmIf you upgrade, you can not repartition the Hard Disk Drive as this would cause the data on the Hard Disk Drive to become unaccesable.Do you have an MS Windows '98 CD? Does the XP upgrade CD already have SP2? Is it the Home or Pro version of XP? What are the main programs which you intend using? What are the computers other specifications, and, have you already done an XP compatibility test?
It is best to do a clean install and use the XP CD to do all of the partitioning and formatting, using the '98 CD as proof of having the qualifying OS for the upgrade.

Here's Bill Gate's official answer to your question:
1. Check the System requirements to make sure your computer has what it takes under the HOOD to drive XP:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/sysreqs.mspx
(I'd suggest doubling many of these, especially the hard drive free space!)
2. Check the Hardware Compatibility List to make sure all your computer hardware devices will work with XP:

3. Install Windows XP:

Unfortunately, I dont have the win98 CD and my OS was pre-installed previously. I guess my only option now is to download the upgrade version from site! My pc is having problem with the cdrw which i just bought. It cannot detect my AOpen CDRW after installation. THEREFORE No way I can use Cdrw drive at this point. I dont know what caused the issue but some said probably it is the win98 OS and I need to upgrade and try to SEE whether winxp can detect my CDRW or not after that. What would be your advice in this case before I begin? Another thing is the Master harddisk is FAILING and I will need to back up everything including the OS to the slave disk. How can it be done?check the jumper settings on the drive........for example a dvdrom drive master///cdrw drive slave on the same ide cable.....hello again
we have decided to download the winxp upgrade version from site. Is it possible to do a dual boot thereafter?? Is it necessary to back up all our emails, documents etc. before proceeding?
