Windows XP will be supported until 2014.I would highly suggest not upgrading to Vista: I haven't heard a good thing about it yet, and, as Soviet Genius pointed out, XP will still be supported for about six more years.windows vista isn't that bad ... it hasn't caused me problems yet now that SP1 is installed. |

Solve : Sure...? |
|
Answer» Well said Deerpark. IPs and Cookies are over rated when it comes to security concerns. I like to say that if you are overly worried about anonymity then the internet is the last place you should be. What would be the place to be i wonder!? Gaylord perry's HOME?He wouldn't care!Quote What would be the place to be i wonder!? Gaylord perry's home?He wouldn't care! Uh, IVY...do we have to have an intervention?? Well, you know, there's these old fashioned things called "pen" and "paper." Yes, they can be intercepted in the regular mail, but chances are thousands of prying eyes won't see...Quote from: Aegis on April 11, 2008, 12:38:38 AM ... but chances are thousands of prying eyes won't see... Thats the reason I prefer internet Hmm... I think i understand IP's a little better now. I was just curious because I have 2 computers, one I can access the forums here and the other one I cant. When I finished building the system below, a friend of mine I had helping me build it thought it would be funny to GET on here and be a little smarta$$ towards members questions and comments. Consequently, I cant access the forums from my new build.your banned just on the one computer? even if your 2 computers are on the same network? If you're computers are on the same network, sharing a broadband connection they would both be banned since they're using the same IP address on the Internet. The only way it's possible that maybe one is banned and the other isn't is if you were using different user accounts and your IP address had changed since the ban.Nathan, another possibility COULD be that he has more than one WAN IP. It is usually possible (at least where I live) to buy extra from the ISP and some ISPs even have products that come with more than one WAN IP. Computers sharing the same internet connection can be assigned different WAN IPs.Absolutely true Deerpark. However, that still wouldn't explain why one on his network would be working and the other would not. If his IP did get REASSIGNED both would work.I never said they got reassigned. If there is no NAT routing on the network it is possible for each computer to have different WAN IPs even on the same connection. For example: Computer A is assigned xxx.xxx.xxx.001 Computer B is assigned xxx.xxx.xxx.002 You IP ban A (xxx.xxx.xxx.001) that still leaves B unbanned as long as they don't switch IPs. Yea, he was logged in with his own user name. When he did it I had the new build hooked up to my modem as if it were the computer i'm on right now. Now my new build is in the living room hooked up via wireless network adapter. |

Solve : I am constantly being kicked off of the wireless network.? |
|
Answer» I hope that I can stay pon long enough to get this question posted. I recenntly moved to a new area temporarily where the only internet access available was a local wireless system. When ever i am connected and try to go to a web site, say my homepage, Yahoo, the browser, ie, takes a very long time toaccess the site. After about 90 to 100 seconds it USUALLY times out and gives the message that it can not access the site that i wanted. If i click the "back" button and repeat my request it might get there orit most likely will "time out" and give me the same message. When try ing to access my accounts, or even my e-mail, it does this continually at each level that i manage to access. Somestimes i think it is the browser, Internet Explorer" or my OS, Vista (grrrr), or the wireless web. Someitmes the wireless system will kick me off completely and I have to RECONNECT. If anyone has a clue as ;to what is happening, I will APPRECIATE hearing from you. Please. I am not sure if I can even get this messaage posted. It took me about 15 or 20 mijutes to even access the forum. Thanks for your help in advance. (In case i am not abale to get back here for several DAYS.) JIM |

Solve : Sound Not Working on Computer? |
|
Answer» My computer RECENTLY crashed and when it was restored, my sound no longer works. I have tried my speakers on another computer and they WORK. I have VOLUME control buttons on my keyboard but when I click on it to turn up the sound, nothing happens. I appreciate any help. I am not very computer savvy so please keep your instructions basic. It sounds like when your computer crashed, it lost the driver that controls the sound. Do you know if the sound is built into the system board or is provided by an installed sound card? You can probably answer this by seeing where the lime green plug it plugged in. If it plugs in higher up on the case, in the group of plugs by the USB ports and ethernet port and mouse and keyboard ports, it is probably sound provided by the system board, and you'll need the drivers that (hopefully) with the system board software. If it plugs in lower down on the case, where there are a series of slot-like appearances, it is probably a physically installed card, and needs drivers for that brand of sound card. The speakers are plugged into the bottom of the tower. I did not install any sound cards after I bought the computer so whatever is there is from the original PC which is 7-years-old. |

Solve : How to standby computer with no power supply? |
|
Answer» I need this answer... how can i standby my PC with no power supply.. I need this for saving electricity. I already try this in my office room as standby then no power in power supply, no fan spinning... I want to try in my own PC but I can't do on how is it working..? I need this answer from you not my officemate.. ... and I will prove that using standby mode is effective... It is possible that it depends on motherboard/power supply?.... I know and it is happen and tested to me that If no power to supply the running program its save on memory.Well, you will have to prove it because I, and everyone else here, know otherwise. Again, as I said in my previous post: Quote from: soybean "Standby" mode really is not a fully powered-down mode. You need to use Hibernation. It completely cuts the power, same as regular shutdown. Starting up from Hibernation takes longer than coming out of Standby, but it's much faster than a regular startup. Since you don't want to accept what I say, use Google or other search SERVICES and do a search on standby vs. hibernate or standby vs. hibernation. You'll find plenty of references supporting what I've said, and nothing supporting what you've said. Here's one find, from a search: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20061214192220AAm28om Quote If no power to supply the running program its save on memory. ? Answer» I've been studying for the CompTIA A+ certification exam. I intend to take it LATER this spring, and I was wondering if any of you guys knew where I can get free study materials. I have been trying to find free practice tests online and 99% of them are spam. The CompTIA website will give you a very small amount of help in the "practice questions" category but I would LIKE to find a more comprehensive study aid. If I spend an obscene amount of money($150!!!!)I could buy a really nice practice test CD. I am poor and I need to find a free way to take these practice exams because I think they would greatly increase my chances of passing. So if anyone knows where I can find free study materials I would greatly appreciate it. |

Solve : Electronic Wizard Wanted? |

Answer» Great googly moogly, Squall -- that's gonna take, like, the Gandolf of electronic wizards to build that thing from scratch I know, I thought maybe one of you guys where smart enough but it appears that I have to check with my dads coworker once HES better, he said that he had some electronics. Quote from: squall_01 on April 08, 2008, 09:27:44 AM I thought maybe one of you guys where smart enough Squall, You have a serious attitude problem, it seems to me. Where do you get off calling people stupid? I'll sure think twice before answering one of your questions in future. It's a bit like Heading a thread "Any metalworking wizards* here?" and then saying "anyone know about doing a bolt up with a SPANNER?" and when someone says "I can do that" you ask, "please show me how to make a Ferrari out of some old tin cans and a couple of angle irons". And we're the dumb ones? * On a side note, it ticks me off when people ask "Any [whatever] wizards who can TELL me how to do my programming homework/earn my salary for me/whip up a batch file to save my @ss?" - why is it always a "wizard"? OK rant over I never said that, electonics is complex, aside from changeing tech to do other things. What? Its not that what I MEAN is a specialist some one who has knowdlge of it. I dont insult patio with such things an wont or anyone else unless there deserve it. BOTD |

Solve : Detection & removal of illegally installed spyware on my PC? |
|
Answer» I am pretty sure I have a problem here. All everyone seems to talk about is installing spyware to keep an eye on their kids. But what if you're the victim of spyware installed illegally for nefarious purposes? Can SOMEONE please help a non-technical person with this urgently? Many thanksQuote But what if you're the victim of spyware installed illegally for nefarious purposes? Are you suspecting someone, you know, or are you talking about a spyware, you may get while surfing internet, installing some programs, etc?Hi there, am worried about stealth installation by someone I know. SAre you the owner of the computer?Yes, my computer is on the mini-network set up within my home office by my now-estranged husband. BTW why have my topics been moved and "locked"? What does "locked" mean?Your topic was moved from incorrect forum, "NETWORKING" to "Other", and it's not locked, since you can post. Does your ex-husband still reside in the same house, and use another computer on the same network? Are computers set to share files? Can one computer can be accessed from another? He still has access to the office, set up the network in the first place & is network administrator. I have only recently learned how to password protect my computer which may have been too LATE. But with Network Administrator status does the password protection make any difference anyway? BTW I asked about locking because both this topic & my other one "How do I know what network administrator can see?" have the locked symbol. I have explained the set-up as fully as I can in this latter post.Quote But with Network Administrator status does the password protection make any difference anyway? This, I'm not sure of. Hopefully, someone with better knowledge in this subject will CHIME in. Please... Download HijackThis: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/hijackthis.html Post HijackThis log. I'll check for anything suspicious running on your computer.Hi, have done that. What happens now?? Thanks & rgds SG BTW please can you re-locate the question about how much Network Administrator can see, and whether Password Protection is any use to a less obscure board where its more likely someone who knows might see it?"How do I know what network administrator can see?"- I've never touch this topic, and it's still in "Networking" section. You stll may post HJT log, but judging from the reply to your "networking" question, it may be pointless.Broni, Please don't be hostile to me - I'm very scared and I don't understand what you mean or why you're saying this. My post was moved from Networking to "Other" and had a locked symbol on it! That's all. Rgds SWhy would I be hostile? What did I say to let you think so? Your topic in "Networking" has a lock on it, because it was moved, so nobody can post THERE anymore, but the very same topic in "Other" is alive, and open for replies. Someone replied in your other topic, that since your ex is system administrator, he can easily access your computer. If that holds, he had no reason to install any spying software directly on your computer, and that's why checking your HJT log may be pointless. You can post it anyway, and I'll take a look.Thank you - but do you mean I have to publicly post the HJT log? Is that safe? It feels a bit funny and exposed. Rgds SThere is no exposing in that log but if you feel unsure you could send it to Broni in a PM and i'm sure he would take a look at it that WAY...Hi Patio Thanks for that. You are going to think I am unbelievably stupid but what is a PM? I have run the scan & saved the file....now what? |

Solve : Shall I reply to his letter? |
|
Answer» Hi all, HELLO FRIEND, I wonder if this is a trap, so I paste the context here. Please advise me! Thanks! kittyIf I were you, I would not. Its just another scam..You can be 100% sure it's a scam. It's probably originating from Nigeria. See this: http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/nigeria.asp or do a Google search on Nigerian email scams for plenty more. It's called a 419 scam. after Article 419 of the Nigerian Penal Code which forbids this type of offence. Even if it was true, you would be guilty of conspiracy to steal. (All the best confidence tricks RELY on the greed of the victim.) If you thought it was true, do you still believe in fairies and Father Christmas? It sounds like a big scam where you have to give so much money to get some back that you never do. I didnt read the whole thing but it sounds like one of those. Where would this money come from NINETEEN MILLION THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND ? The money would be given to the nearst family member if it was true.Quote If you thought it was true, do you still believe in fairies and Father Christmas? Look, she was smart enough to bring this to us, wasn't she? Perhaps sarcasm isn't necessary. The Russians / Ukrainians love me, lately. I get all kinds of e-mail lately about my customer service resume on Monster, and how I'd be just great at being a transaction agent to move monies for them -- everything from real estate to antiques and other items. $3K a month or more is promised to me, if they can move monies into an account I set up. Yeah, I know --they're probably laundering money. My financial situation is dire enough that it kills me every time I get one -- you don't know how true and how real I want these offers to be. (My opinion is that the economy has sucked since the dot-com crash in 2000 - 2001, but I digress...) So yeah, I want there to be a Father Christmas -- what he represents: the spirit of unselfish giving, and truly caring about your neighbor. Fairies? I wouldn't mind a little magic, myself. I am old, frustrated, and cynical. The scams have been around for years, Kitty -- the internet just makes it all the easier and more efficient to spread them around. Thanks for bringing this example to us, and good on you for trusting yourself enough to wonder if it MIGHT be for real... Sorry, Aegis, but con artists rely on people being gullible. 3,000 dollars a month is slightly above the low end for a clerical/admin/customer service job where I live, and you don't run the risk of being arrested and imprisoned for conspiracy to launder money. If law enforcement agencies go onto these guys, who do you think would be left holding the baby? You. Yes, they do rely on people being gullible, and greedy -- too many of us willing to take shortcuts, willing to go for the easy money... It not how many are, its those that dont know its not true.Quote It not how many are, its those that dont know its not true. Good point. It's easy to think that people are just, somehow, gonna know what's real and what's not real. They send quite a few of these out. Depending how succesful they are is whom every sends back. True that they keep tring an will always be differnt but it should stop ones like these from reappearing. What amazes me is that anyone would think for more than 0.00001 second that they might get some money out of one of these schemes. Just think about it. You get an ill-spelled ungrammatical email from a stranger in another country, probably another continent, who says they need your help to steal some money that is not theirs (and not yours) from a bank account. Or the Russian mafia or Colombian druglords or whatever want to launder money through your account. These crooks need your help? They are self confessed criminals whose chosen method is deceit and fraud, yet you are supposed to believe they will be honest with you? Suspending disbelief for a moment longer, there is the question of what your bank will do when 16 million dollars comes into your checking account from Nigeria. You think they'll just quietly credit it to you? Just about every country now has laws in place to prevent money laundering. My own British bank will freeze, pending query, any non-preadvised deposit over £10,000, that is 20,000 US dollars. They harvest email addresses from people who are careless enough to place them on websites so that a "bot" can harvest them. In so doing, such people are advertising to the whole world that they are -- shall we say -- not the most cautious of individuals. Next stage in the filtering process is if you reply. Now you have ascended to the 2nd rank of, er, dummies. They know that you are the sort of person who might very well fall for the scam. Now they try to get your bank account, date of birth, etc details out of you. Another possibility is that they ask you for money, to help with fees or to bribe a bank official. If you comply, you have reached the 3rd stage. Payday for the scammers! Either by identity theft or by fooling you into paying advance fees, they bleed you dry. If I don't know where the message came from then I would just forget about it, I normally would just erase it and if I get more from the same person I would just block him out of my email address.Quote from: internetnova on March 14, 2008, 11:15:21 AM If I don't know where the message came from then I would just forget about it, I normally would just erase it and if I get more from the same person I would just block him out of my email address. Same here Quote You get an ill-spelled ungrammatical email from a stranger in another country, probably another continent Cheap shot of the day: I get that from people in this country. I get that from businesses. I get that from people whom I would expect to know better, or at least use the resources AVAILABLE to them to make better presentations. Your point is well taken, though. |

Solve : Strange Boot Problem? |
|
Answer» I recently found a e-machine T3256. When I turn it on it sounds like it's starting. However, when I turn the monitor on, it starts up, but then the light TURNS orange and blinks like it isn't recieving a signal. Thinking the video card was broken, I replaced it to no avail. Then, I tried booting it from an Ubuntu LIVE disc to see if it would boot to Linux. To my surprise, it started and loaded to the option screen, where it shut down. Now upon turning it on it will start to various points then then randomly turn off, and the tower will start to make this strange clicking noise. I know that the monitor, new video card, keyboard/mouse, power cord, etc. work- I've tested them with builds and they work fine. Do you have any idea what's going on, and if so, how I can FIX it? Thanks so much! Are these clicking noises coming from the hard drive? |

In Great Britain I know of Apex Data Recovery which can repair USB pen drives, extract the data and put it on a new one and return to you by mail order. there are plenty of others. often companies which repair LAPTOPS will OFFER this kind of service. |

My cd rom is external and "clips" onto the bottom of the laptop -- it does not use a "normal" USB port plug in, but I know it uses the universal serial bus to connect to the computer. If the CD ROM is attached when I turn on the computer, the system checks the CD, and finding nothing in it, continues on to boot from the hard drive. If I don't have the CD drive attached, I get the error message once on a black background, and then the system goes on to boot from the hard drive. So, I do not have an exact answer for you, but as I say, when my system cannot access its CD / optical drive, that's when I get the error. |

Solve : Love that MacBook Air !? |
|
Answer» Story here: http://machinist.salon.com/blog/2008/03/18/charlie_roseQuote Charlie Rose's late-night talk show is rarely a shocking affair. That's its appeal, of course -- a quiet, contemplative chat with Davos luminaries before bedtime. Folks who tuned in on Monday night, though, got a rare fright: Rose's left EYE was heavily bruised and bandaged, looking for all the world as if he were trying out for a role in Wes Anderson's next picture.thats kind of...sad.I tuned in Mr. Rose last night, and saw his condition, and wondered what the heck had happened... One does not picture Charlie Rose in a bar fight... |

Solve : Tower keeps booting up and running fast, after I click PLAY on POGO? |
|
Answer» Everytime I go onto Pogo to play games and I hit PLAY my tower boots up and RUNS loud and fast for 3-4 minutes then quits 3-4 minutes and then repeats until I click out of it. I cleaned my JAVA cache, and computer, I ran Norton, and I have no viruses. This all started a week ago when I let a Technician from Norton go into my computer because for some reason my Norton was showing that my subscription ran out but the site was saying I was good until Oct 2008. He clicked on some stuff and fixed it and said my time was messed up and he fixed it too. It was when we had to change the clocks, plus leap year DAY. But I can't figure out why this keeps doing this. My computer has ran excellent and we never had trouble playing on pogo before until now. Does anyone know what happened or whats causing this? I have a HP PAVILLION flat screen, Microsoft Windows 5.1, Service Pack 2. Oh and one of my friends computer is doing the same thing when she goes to Pogo and plays too. But it only does it when you click the play. I THOUGHT it might be JAVA cause it has to kick in to START playing. I have sun Java. |

Solve : Is it safe to always leave a laptop on?? |
|
Answer» I asked a similar question a while back: "Is it fine to always leave your computer in standby?" How does Wake on LAN work anyhow? My board supports it but I have no idea how it works.Personally, I am not 100% sure, but, just as a word of precaution, do not use this with just your cable modem, as it tends to be that any network refresh data (pings or whatnot) will cause your computer to suddenly resume... Basically, whenever your computer gets the proper request, Wake on LAN will either: Resume your computer from standby or Power it on for you if its not already Its kind of like "Wake on Modem Ring" in your BIOS It might be that your computer is for receiving faxes, for example, and when the phone rings, it needs to turn on and receive the fax. It should be safe to leave your laptop on as long as necessary, as long as you're not running at 100% CPU the whole time. My advice would be to leave it on overnight sometime, and install something like RMClock or similar to MONITOR the temperatures and generate a log file, which you can hen review to check the temperatures. That would only give you an idle reading, but it would at least give you a clue as to whether the temps would keep rising, and what thy would stop at so you'd know if it was safe or not.I agree, LAPTOPS can be funny about heat though so I honestly would err on the side of caution. Even if it is cooled correctly laptops are flaky. best to shut down but thats just my opinion |

Solve : Access or Excel?? |
|
Answer» Hi, I need some help/advice on what is best to do. no way use access for sure.beyourownit, he/she said they need to make charts and graphs from the data. Would you care to provide detailed instructions on doing that with Access? well charts and graphs are nice, if thats all you want to do with your data then use excel. If you don't see yourself doing query's or wanting to do any higher level data mining then you are right excel is likely the best fit. What I was trying to say is excel is fine but it really seems like some amount of integration between the two may be the best option here. |

Solve : auction photos? |
|
Answer» I am having problems with uploaded auction photos. After the PHOTO is uploaded it looks like it has a lot of little squares, like, tiles, mosaics. I can't figure this out and I have asked other members as WELL. After I TAKE the photo, I crop and re size using Irfinview. I try not to size it down to much either. After it is uploaded it turns out distorted. The strange part is that when I open it up from the Notepad it does not look distorted. This seems to happen only after it is uploaded. I am a REAL BEGINNER with auctions, auction photography and have not had this happen at other auctions. All I have is a Kodak Easy Share CX4200, a point and SHOOT camera. Can someone give me a little insight about this?? Thanks, in advance. |

Solve : Certain video players freeze computer? |
|
Answer» Please help, I desperately need access to certain videos for school and this problem will not go away. I may not have Genuine Windows if that matters. It may. Also I should note RealPlayer, which doesn't ask to authenticate windows, doesn't work. Last thing (if anyone cares), audio files using WMP and QT work fine, it's just the videos that kill it.See, if VLC Player will work.VLC won't work either. If fact I just downloaded it and tried to play a video and the Windows Task Manager didn't even come up when I tried. So I just reset the computer to GET it running again. You reinstalled Windows?I've been asking around and someone told me to download drivers for my video card. (This may seem obvious to some of you, but I didn't know to do this) That fixed the problem, every video player works fine now. Thank you Broni for replying. Very well. |
