What do people think about posters who ask "how do I do xyz in a BATCH file?", and you tell them, (i.e. summarize the steps) and they go "Uh?" and make it clear they REALLY meant, "Please write me a batch file that does xyz?". I have a problem with doing people's homework or paid work for them. Am I being unecessarily unhelpful?
Actually i'd say the opposite...you've been more than patient with most of them in the past.
Maybe just posting links to decent reference sources when you feel they are not putting any EFFORT in and wishing them luck with it is the best approach.No, it's one thing if someone's truly stuck -- even if it is homework -- and you can tell they're making an effort, or trying to work out the problem (and I've seen you help these folks), but it's quite another to just ask for the code without any effort (or at least a reasonable EXPLANATION of why it should be provided gratis.

(Not SAYING you should give services away, just saying these folks, some of them, don't even know how to properly ask / beg to make one even consider just giving away something.)

My original problem occured when putting my music collection onto my (30G) desktop... I basically ran out of memory!

This made the computer run very slowly, so I bought an External Hardrive (500G) to solve the issue. I moved all the audio FILES onto the external hardrive and they are now fine, THOUGH when I connected to the Internet the computer was still very slow and it wasnt long till I had the trusty "Virtual Memory Low" MESSAGE. General uploading was slow and when playing any video clips, they play only fragments (i.e it "jumps" and "freezes" through the footage...)

Turns out I only had 128MB of RAM, so I bought 512MB RAM to solve the issue. Computer runs well now but video's still jump through the footage and freezes alot...

Is this an issue with the video card? Is the only way to ensure footage runs smoothly to buy a new video card? I know the computer was pretty basic when I got it 6 years ago and its a "Tiny" Desktop

Under "Systems" it currently says I have;
Intel Celeron Processor
1.00GHz, 504MB of RAM


Can anyone offer any help/advise?

Sorry if thisd is posted in the wrong area.............I have a series problem. Due to the importance of the files in my CPU its essential I get this problem fixed.
Unfortunatly I have an Aspire 5100 laptop which is turning on but is not booting into windows. It has a series of problem. It gets stuck at crcdsk.sys and will not boot. My DVD room is in the IDE slot and I cannot change it. So no boot disc unless I use the usb hub to as the 1st boot sequence. Is there a way to CLEAR cmos because it has an error.I just got this, did some important production work thinking its ok to install a usb video cam corder webcam. It installed and vista ok'd the device. When I rebooted all these problems happened. It gets stuck at the windows vista screen. I have no system restore or did not make a backup. I cannot access safe mode because of the crcdsk error? Acer is no help. The offer no solutions they basically say I am out of luck?How can I fixed this? I don't wanna pay $400 to go to a certain place "don't wanna PLUG a business" that might be able to fix this. So many thanks for those that help. Even more to the one that comes up with a solution! interesting, i have heard this for many YEARS now.
i do not use my phone very often, MOSTLY for emergencies and the like.

you have to really wonder, isn't everything we do or come in contact with GOING to harm us in some way?
i recently read about lemon wedges at resteraunts.
the way i figure it, i already have multiple sclerosis, so if that doesn't kill me in the long run.

You're more than welcome to cite sections of a post with a link, but copying all the information and putting it on another location is not allowed. I start watching video's on youtube, tv links, and my personal favorite crunchy roll. I USUALLY go there and watch anime's, but no matter what I watch or where, after a short while the fun stops. When I first start the video loads FAST and is good to go, but after a short while it gets to where it takes FOREVER or will not load at all. I have tried spyware and adware scanners, and anti-viruses, even deleting cookies and clearing my cache and temp. internet files. NOTHING seems to work, I have only found one real solution, reset. To do a COMPLETE restore of the hard rives. THEN it seems to go back to normal before starting again in a short period of time.

Firefox 2.0.0.4
Windows Vista Home Basic (did it to me with XP too)
1.5 gigs of RAM
Dual 64 meg ATI Radeon graphics cards
Dual 40 gig hard drives
Laptop (did it on a desktop too)
Communicom High Speed cable Internet

Probably your network card as it stops downloading or your mobo or your video card.
But I don't know much about hardware.

Jonas Thanks for the help ^_^Disable any programs and services loading at startup that not absolutely NECESSARY. Check your anti virus settings - don't disable the software but disable real time scanning. Depending on which software you use, it can eat you alive.Than the same thing would not happen even if he formats.

Hi everyone!

I've recently rediscovered my old 286 games machine and was looking forward to having a bit of fun with it but I get the error: "insert system boot disk".
I don't have a boot disk for it but is there any way I can make one?
I do know it was CUSTOMISED, but I don't know the specifics.
From memory it would load to a menu/button sort of system divided into categories, but i also had some version of windows.

I know it's an antique but I FIGURE I may as well GIVE it a shot

InnleIf it has Windows, and a proper Hard Disk Drive, and its presenting the "Insert Boot Disk" message, your hard drive has probably crashed. (Like mine did I miss that 4MHz machine)

Boot disks are available at:

(Try the DOS Boot Disk version 6.22)
Once you get the boot disk in, try the following commands:

dir

But When I rebooted it for a SECOND try, just to be sure, it loaded up perfectly and just as I remember!

After I had to re-install windows on my laptop, the SOUND does not seem to WORK and all the sound options in control panel are inaccesible. In addition, the arrows at the side of the touch pad do not work, and when i scroll down using the arrows at the side of the screen, the page stutters down and it seems as if there is a PROBLEM. What do you plan on BOOTING? Linux? DOS? WEIRD on-crack version of Windows?
The reason I want a bootable flash drive is that so many computers are not coming with a floppy drive anymore and I want an alternative to booting to a CD. I have all the floppies I need as well as CD's too. I need to cover all the bases.

DOS preferably, but I can work with Linux as well. Just something like a Live CD you can make from just about any flavor of Linux (I have Ubuntu 6.10, PCLinuxOS and Mint Linux). I'd like it to be able to see NTFS so Windows 98 is out for bootability (is that a word )

I've given up codec PACKS because of all the codec conflicts they always bring with them. It's just easier to install ffdshow and let it handle all your decoding needs.
But on the other hand this pack actually sounds pretty good so I think I'll give it a try.

Hello. I SEND and receive email via Yahoo. I realize that when I delete my emails, they still exist on my computer somewhere, hiding in the shadows. Is there a way to get rid of them entirely? I know that years ago when I used AOL for my email there was a separate folder that I could GO into to get rid of DELETED emails. I only discovered it when it got too full and popped up a warning along with all of my deleted emails! So much for privacy! Does Yahoo have something like that, too or is it an entirely different thing since it is not actual software installed on my computer like AOL was?

If you mean Yahoo webmail, then the emails aren't technically stored on your computer but on Yahoo's computers.
Some data is saved on your computer though. This is because your browser SAVES a temporary copy of the web pages you browse.
If you tell us what web browser you use, we can tell you how to clear out these temporary files.Thanks for your reply. I feel really stupid, but I am not sure what web browser I use. Just got back from Germany and my power adapter doesnt WORK there it WONT let my battery to stay charged is there a place on laptop that changes power besides the adapter it WORKS in the U.S fine. I had a GERMAN adapter with the German PLUG

I dont have any problem getting them into the Computer, but I have WIN98 and I need to find a free program that will help me put them onto disk without losing quality etc etc..

We had a son in May and all the pictures on the sandisk camera disk are of him. theres like 700 lol.
I just want to be sure before I format the sandisk...It should be fine with at least 2 copies...i have CD's of photos from 7 years ago that are still perfect.
Just take the proper care of the CD's and keep them out of direct sunlight and they should be fine for years to come...

I backed up some pics from a catalog in Photoshop element last night. Did some additional work on it today. I tried to back up the pics that I added on the same RW disc. Program said that data EXISTED on the disc & that I would have to erase that info before I could back up again. It looks like the RW discs cannot have info added to them. You must erase the old data before re-writing. Is this correct? TIA for the help.If you want to add data to RW disks you can do it two ways

1. Burn the disk as "multisession". When you need to add data later, choose the option in your BURNING software to import previous SESSION. Then add the data and burn another session. You can do this until the disk is full.

2. Install "packet writing" software. One well known product is Nero InCD. This allows you to format the disk like a hard drive or giant floppy disk. You can add, REPLACE and delete files. You can do this by drag-and-drop in Windows Explorer. Some drawbacks are that it can be slow and your data is not 100% safe, but that applies to RW disks in general. Many people do not like packet writing.

The name of the link can be any color from the drop down list.The drop down list only appears when composing/editing messages. It does not appear in the Profile screen where the signature block option is found. Actually, hundreds of colors could be used, such as any among the 216 colors that appear at http://html-color-codes.com/.

To use the codes on that page, the color now set for the link to medieval tech SUPPORT in my signature block , for example, is entered in the profile coding as
Code: [Select][color=#FF33FF]medieval tech support[/color]Note that the color code is preceded by #.

Of course, common color names such as blue can also be used.I think you guys are OVERLOOKING the question. He wants to customize the hovers of his links...

Jonas, the links can be WHATEVER color you want. However, what you want to do isn't possible with BBcode. The forum would have to support HTML and CSS (or javascript) for you to be able to do something like that in your signature.Alright thanks guys that is what I wanted to KNOW!

Hello Forum: I have Dell Dimension 2400 with WindowsXP SP2. Still using IE6.0. Never had a print problem before. Using two printers. A Lexmark Z43 and a Dell mini laser jet depending on the quality I want. I have always been able to print off the WEB or from my documents anything that was Adobe pdf. Now all of a sudden I can not print Adobe documents either off the web or from my saved documents. I now get a dialog box which asks for an 'Output File Name' and get two options: OK or Cancel. Never saw this before. What should I do. I hit cancel because I am not sure what file they are asking for. I can print any Word Perfect documents that are in My Documents but nothing Adobe. Never had this before. Any help would be appreciated. ThanksTry this.
In ACROBAT reader select 'File' and then 'Print Setup...'
In the drop down menu make sure your printer is selected.

Hi I sure hope somebody can help. I have Mozilla and I can't get to an important PAGE. If I don't go through Mozilla,I can get to the page. what i mean by real time is like constantly refreshing etc. so you can see if there are new POSTS and stuff, and just stay on the main site. i usually find it rather tedious either refreshing this myself or going to one topic then back to main, due to the ''speed'' of this computer, but something real time like msn would be good, just, with a forum...

To change this read up on multi-session burning in Nero's HELP guide...

The DRAWBACK to multi-session is you can't access the data on the CD until it is full/finalised without using a program such as ISOBuster.

This is really out there, but does anyone know of a way that outlook express can be made to notify when no new email arrives? I mean, it checks, there is no new email and then it notifies you that no new mail arrived. It's crazy I know, but in a world full of so many miraculous things there must be a way. Open Outlook Express...Click Send/Receive...look in the lower right hand corner while it is doing this...if no new email...it'll tell you no new messages.

This question seems odd. Since OE provides an audible signal when new mail is received, then silence indicates no new mail has been received. So, why do you want an audible signal for No new email notification?

here's the situation. I added up the cost of everything i want in a new pc and it'll be @800 at the cheapest. i have a budget of $3105.55 nevermind the cents or odd cash, and that will get me a pc that's a new Antec case that looks like a spaceship (as does my current one) and a psu, 2 1Gb sticks of ram, a nice video card and all the rest you can expect for a gaming/games development computer.

however.... i can't get this computer for about one year because i don't officially have the money yet... it's sorta like a trust fund thing where i can only TAKE out $1200 until the time has elapsed on the account. {b}Buuuuut{/b} my current pc has on-board graphics, a p4 3.4 Ghz cpu or something, and 256 Mb of RAM, which it's always saying it has 128Mb of i need to continue with the game i'm making at the moment or everybody else is going to stop aswell until i get going again, but my current pc can't handle it and if i upgrade this one to 2 1Gb sticks of RAM and a pretty decent graphics card, i won't be able to afford the new pc in the LONG run....

Mind you i'm talking Australian dollars here... for some reason the Aussie anthem just flashed into my head too... hate that song...Do the two motherboards utilize the the same type of ram? If so, a small compromise. Up GRADE the current machine with a 1G stick of ram. Buy or build the new machine with 1G. Then transfer 1G from the old machine to the new machine.ah... i forgot one important thing. the stuff i'm getting for the new pc isn't supported in my old one. or i wouldn't have a problem the RAM is the only thing similar, but my current motherboard only runs 533 RAM and the one i'll be getting goes up to around the 800's You might be able to manage a different compromise or work a few extra dollors into the budget. Upgrade the existing machine with an additional 512M ram. You'll be surprised at the difference.More RAM and even an old dedicated video card WOULD help, and it'd be fairly cheap.
Not sure about how much this is in Australian dollars, but 512MB RAM here is maybe £30-£40, an old video card maybe £20.
That'd give you 768Mb RAM in all.
That'd take care of your current PC for now, and still leave you lots of cash for a good new PC later on.

I have a question about using signatures in your profile, posts and threads.

I've configured my signature within my profile settings using the standard BBC format.

The image is not being displayed in my signatrue. The first image I tried to use was 468x88 PIXELS and a file SIZE of just over 8KB. I figured this must've been too big so, I edited the image to a size of 319x60 and just over 4KB...still...no go.

Is my coding off? Is the image still too large? Are certain members/usergroups restricted from using images in their signatures?

I've PM'd Admin, but have had no response.

Hi I have a problem with one of the PC in our classroom

Yesterday, one of the kids turned it on and the thing slowed down to a crawl and ever since that happened it doesn't boot up anymore. I'd give the little bugger the punishment he deserves for breaking it, but he keeps telling me that he didn't do anything and now both his parents and the head of the school are cracking down on me.

We haven't got an IT staff, EVERYTHING is done by volunteers and I can't reach any of them; my question to you is. WHAT DO I DO?

The PC is 7 years of age and has a Pentium 3 processor, it comes with Windows ME and I think we have a cable broadband connection with a hub. There was a virus scanner on there, but it was from the year 2005 and I think it stopped working about 2 years ago.

Sorry if I haven't given you enough information but I hope you can find it in your heart to help a teacher under a LOT of pressure out!

Can you tell us the make of the motherboard? Does the school have a Windows CD for it? Hard to tell whether this is a software, i.e. Windows, or hardware problem. It is 7 years old and, considering the environment in which they're used, what does the school EXPECT from these computers?

One hardware possibility: a failed power supply. Could you swap a power supply out of another computer to test this?Are you saying,it is power dead?I mean nothing,or it
will not boot to windows?Does it have a POST screen?

What browser are you using? What version of Windows? What do you mean by "hold down the left click on the mouse to see the text". Please be precise in explaining your technique.

I'm assuming this is only happening on IE/FireFox? What browser are you using?

Only thing I can think of just now is that the default text/background colours have been changed SOMEHOW. Try checking this that they are not set to the same colour.

I keep getting the same error everytime i DOWNLOAD files from the internet.. i did what the error message said which was get a new dll so i did and extracted the files into system32s correct folder which was (SHELL ) in system .... the file im downloading at present is extremely important its so i can optimize my speed while my broadband is upgraded without it im doomed to a a low speed... its not just that in general any error is bad i would like it if SOMEONE could lend a helping hand in fixing this error , cheers .

Every update just failed.If you're using anything like BricoPack or Vista Transformation Pack, that could be causing the problem, so you may want to consider uninstalling it.

I see quite a few people with this problem uninstalling their KB925902 update. You could try the same, but make sure you understand the possible security risks...

I don't think I've ever read "and if you accept this EULA you will be getting malware".

Help & advice please,

In recent months at irregular intervals and for no REASON I can understand, every file I have in Outlook Express (including the Inbox) suddenly appears in the RECYCLE BIN in a 'Tiles VIEW' format and descibed as a BAK File.
The original Files are still in place in Outlook Express and so FAR as I know no harm has been done to my computer. I just empty the Recycle Bin and carry on.
Anyone any idea why this happens and how to stop it?

I have a Dell computer using Windows XP and with Intel Pentium 4 processor.

i think its just the old backup files for outlook express is it affecting you ability to use OEThis started about 5 momths ago and no it does not seem to be giving any problems with Outlook Express.

Another thing i can do is to download the picture to my PC and then add. But then again when i use the word page as a web page i have to actually give the web address of the picture. That means i have to search the location of the picture in the HTML code, making things a bit difficult.
