Solve : Sound Not Working on Computer?

Answer»

My computer RECENTLY crashed and when it was restored, my sound no longer works. I have tried my speakers on another computer and they WORK. I have VOLUME control buttons on my keyboard but when I click on it to turn up the sound, nothing happens. I appreciate any help. I am not very computer savvy so please keep your instructions basic. It sounds like when your computer crashed, it lost the driver that controls the sound. Do you know if the sound is built into the system board or is provided by an installed sound card? You can probably answer this by seeing where the lime green plug it plugged in. If it plugs in higher up on the case, in the group of plugs by the USB ports and ethernet port and mouse and keyboard ports, it is probably sound provided by the system board, and you'll need the drivers that (hopefully) with the system board software. If it plugs in lower down on the case, where there are a series of slot-like appearances, it is probably a physically installed card, and needs drivers for that brand of sound card. The speakers are plugged into the bottom of the tower. I did not install any sound cards after I bought the computer so whatever is there is from the original PC which is 7-years-old.

From the Control Panel when I click on Sounds & Multimedia, there is no Preferred Device available to select for Sound Playback.

In the Device Manager under Sound, Video, and Game CONTROLLERS - I removed all of the options and restarted the computer so they could all reinstall and this did not fix it.

I found the original system recovery CD and re-installed everything that looked like it could be an audio driver. Nothing worked.

Any ideas?Sound chipset may be shot. Borrow a soundcard from a friend to make sure.
