Solve : E-readers?

Answer»

Does anyone have opinions on the various e-reader devices available these days? I am considering the Amazon Kindle (it's at the top of my list currently), but have been reading reviews of others as well. I definitely don't need the iPad as I really am just looking for an e-reader and am perfectly happy with my laptop for all of the other fancy COMPUTER stuff.

Any opinions or suggestions are welcome, thanks.I'm not familiar with the stand-alone e-reader devices, but, in case you might be interested, I see that Barnes & Noble has a free e-reader software that can be downloaded and installed on a computer. Info here: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/ebooks/download-reader.asp?dltab=pc&cds2Pid=28709I have an Amazon kindle and absolutely love it. Great for reading those 800 PAGE computer books without actually having to hold the 6 pound book and very NICE for highlighting and saving notes to be reviewed later. I've also tried the Sony and nook and honestly wasn't that impressed. But since I just tried each for a few minutes after I've already had the Kindle it's kind of a bias opinion.

You may want to wait to try the Apple iPad to see how it feels to read. But honestly reading that bright of a display and holding that big of an object doesn't seem like it would be that great of a reading experience. Although I do think the web experience on the iPad would be a lot more ENJOYABLE than the Kindle's.Thanks, CHA.

That's the kind of experience that I was hoping that I would hear... I think that the size and weight are good points (esp. when considering the voluminous computer books!) but I think the eInk technology is what's going to push me over the edge into the Kindle marketplace.

Thanks again! My pleasure, glad to help.I would get a Sony Reader. I don't think the Kindle supports PDF or EPUB.Kindle does support PDF now.

Solve : Apple Macbook compared to PC laptop??

Answer»

Hi,

I was wondering about the speed of Macbooks compared to a PC laptop.

A 13-inch Macbook costing $1099:
- Core 2 Duo @ 2.26 GHZ with a 1066 MHz and 3MB cache
- 2 GB of 1066MHz DDR3 RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared memory

A 15-inch Dell Studio costing $999:
- Intel Core i5-430M 2.26GHz with a 1066 MHz and 3MB cache
- 4 GB of 1066MHz DDR3 RAM
- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 with 512MB

I've heard that Macbooks are faster laptops, how can that be when this PC seems better? If this PC has better parts why do people buy Macs? I'm a bit confused.Apple tries to stay away from MHz debates by promoting their work as more efficient and thereby faster by virtue better engineering, not raw MHz.

That being said, now that Mac has gone unix-like core, I think they are roughly equal to all the other systems out there.

Apple prides itself on first-rate manufacturing. This can be an obvious difference compared to the cut-rate prices on lower quality generic hardware. With better fit and finish on higher echelon PC brands, the PRICE and quality difference can be less. I think a discerning home-builder can make something of adequate quality for a considerably less amount of money when not speaking of laptops.

The choice of Mac vs PC should be based more on your needs. Choosing Mac OS has long-term implications that you may not be willing to deal with. Once you choose your PLATFORM, you can shop for price vs PERFORMANCE with consideration of your impression of the quality of the brand.

Solve : My Computer Took a Hit ... Please Help?

Answer»
Well to CONTINUE my saga...APC has been extremely professional about my situation...I made a claim and they EMAILED me questions to answer and even
have me draw a diagram, schematic if you will, of EXACTLY how I had the devices powered from the UPS. I also have to return the unit which is a BK350 to them for testing. They state that upon examination, if they find that the unit is functioning properly, my claim will be dismissed....

Its worth a try I guess. There was no smoke or fuses BLOWN,etc but I do know that my computer, wireless router, and monitor, were properly hooked up...

I will report on here the results of my claim. I would LIKE to thank everyone for thier input on this. It is greatly appreciated.Best of Luck to you...bring us good news...

Solve : Rebame Administrator, improve security??

Answer»

This is not a new idea. But maybe new to you. It has been said that the built-in Administrator could be a security weakness. In view of ever-present Mal-Ware attacks, maybe this could help a little.
Quote

This will show you how to rename the built-in Administrator account name to a name you like instead to be displayed in the log on screen and Start menu in Windows 7. You can have better security by not using the same default name as everyone else to log in with.
...
Windows 7 - Built-in Administrator Account - Change Name
Does this really matte?

Somewhere else I saw a post from an IT GUY who said he longed several unknown attempts to try and log into the Administrator account of PCs on the local network. How could that be? Would not the firewall block external anti-authoritarianism traffic?

If that is so, then we should be using hard user names for all accounts and no more Alex, Bill, Bob , Jame, Mary and E.T. as user names.Rebame?

GOOGLE TRANSLATE NOW produces IMPECCABLE english. I mean...

I am going to announce that Google Translate is now ABSOLUTELY PERFECT IN THE TRANSLATION OF THE RESPECTIVE LANGUAGES OF VOLTAIRE AND ANGLAIS. I am going to write a book titled "On the impeccable PHP-driven translation of the Languages of Voltaire and Anglais." It will be a bestseller.

Interestingly the translator copes with less-than-perfect French.

As to the topic, I have wondered why this idea,
rename the administrator
has been touted as a security improvement. If so, one would think that Microsoft would have done some work to fix this in Vista and Windows 7. The idea is as old a Windows 2000, I thin k.

Maybe they cold have found 100 different words to mean 'Administrator' and thus frustrate the hackers . To some extent. They would randomly give a faux name based on product key. A graphic on the upper right corner would show the name in
John Handy LET font.
So the owner of the PC, if you had normal eyesight, would learn the faux name after seeing it day after day in the upper left corner.
Could I patent this?
Any comments?
I've never understood this myth. How would renaming the administrator account increase security? Account names can be found out a *censored* of a lot easier than passwords, and you can reset any windows password using tools, So If somebody wanted to get access to your account, they just have to see the list of user names and their SePrivilegeLevel to know which is the "renamed administrator".

EDIT: also, I could have sworn I already posted this...Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 24, 2011, 10:49:17 AM

This entire thing is a load of *excuse my french*, no offense.
Seriously, what does the fact that the administrator account is named "Administrator" have to do with the rate of hackers accessing/attempting to access it? And is the rate of hacking attempts proportional to the rate of renamed Administrator accounts per, say, 10,000 users?
Quoting common sense: PLEASE put a password to protect your Administrator account. Create a separate account for other users who you do not trust and give them limited privileges. DEP would help too.
As for John Handy LET font and the user name... that occurs in the Start menu. You do not have to patent this. If the product key AND user account name were both changed, I, for one, would immediately suspect a problem.

If I was intent on gathering your Windows passwords and had physical access to your PC, well, I'd go with ophcrack Live CD. I have successfully tested it on a win7 machine. Solve : Help with my Canon printer?

Answer»

My printer, all of a sudden, is printing teeny, tiny letters. I have searched through my online manual, checked troubleshooting but can find nothing pertaining to the size of the letters or any way to adjust printing size. I can't even find anything that indicates this printer can print different size fonts.

Can someone help me, please?
Thank you!Does this happen if you print different documents?

I'm guessing you've turned off the printer, and turned it on again? I would turn off the printer, unplug it for about 30 seconds, PLUG it in again, and try printing a short document, again.

Are you printing a document, or from SOMETHING on line?

What MODEL Canon printer do you have?

(Welcome to the forum!)We don't know the model of Canon printer. We don't know what program you are using for the created document you are trying to print. We don't know what your monitor resolution is set to. So without all that it is difficult to know where the problem lies. Solve : Toshiba sattelite pro L450D-12x in need of charging??

Answer»

My son yanked my charger out of my laptop causing the charging hole to crack and CRUMBLE. now the charger does not fit it and will not charge my laptop. i tried buying a dynadocks but i find that they can not charge laptops and this models does not have a docking PORT. how can i charge my laptop? any help will be appreciated. i cannot afford to loose all my work.
The work you are worried about is STILL there. If you cannot use the charging plug port due to the damage you will need to have that port repaired. However if the need to access the data on the HDD is an immediate nesecity that cannot await the repair you have a VARIETY of options.
1.Obtain a sufficiently charged battery to allow you to access the computer.
2. If you or someone you know is able remove the hardrive from the laptop and slave it to another computer to EITHER transfer the data you need to either the temporary computer or another medium.
3.If you know someone that has the same computer (or that uses the same battery)--have them charge your battery for you.
4.Depending on the degree of port destruction you might be able (if the internal connection components are still there) temporarily tape the input of the charger to the computer case long enough to access your data. Ultimately you are going to have to have it repaired --this could involve the case as well depending on the amount of damage. truenorthThanks for your help i will take it to the shop and see wot they can salvage for me. i think i will just try and transfer all details as you suggested first and see wot happen. my brother uses thesame laptop type so that shouldn't be much hard to do.
Thanks again

Solve : acer 4741g BIOS recovery?

Answer»

Hi guys, Sorry about the quite long post but I think it's important I provide as much specific information as possible.

I went to official acer website to update drivers, thought there was an update for my BIOS and used that to flash - didn't realise it was for same model notebook as mine but SLIGHTLY different graphics card.
So yeah my computer force restarted, with long beep two short beeps, and continuous black screen.

I read http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/11839-Acer-aspire-5536g-bios-dead?highlight=bios+acer+4741g+screen that someone fixed it on their 5536g just using a usb DRIVE and not pressing anything so I've been trying the method posted by spkleader: basically he posted 'phoenix crisys disk' link, copy original BIOS for your computer into the crisys folder and rename wph name to bios.wph, run winsys targetting a usb stick

With the original BIOS firstly I couldn't find the exact original so I tried the closest I could find on the site Acer Support: Downloads & Support Documents 'supports i5 450m' whereas I have i5 430m. The others I don't think I can USE as they are to support other graphics cards to mine (I have GT 320m)

I downloaded that and just copied the DOS files over (didn't think I need the win exe file also) into the folder and renamed the wph file and ran wincris onto a 250mb usb stick.
I have the battery plugged in now with AC adapter, put usb in and held 'function esc' to get into BIOS recovery, turned on and my USB light flickered rapidly, then stayed on, i let go of function esc at this point, the light went off for 5 seconds then on and continued like this. Is this maybe an indicator it's seeing the USB but rejecting the BIOS I gave it? I waited 20 minutes and the computer has not turned itself off yet like they said it would (as a sign that its gone back to default BIOS)

So basically I guess I could be doing a few things wrong here, do u think that BIOS would be ok to use? do i have to press function escape, and if so what exact time should i let them go? (hard to TELL with no screen lol) Do I have to use a usb floppy drive to do this? (I didn't think so cos that guy on the other forum managed to)
Any help would be great, I've been searching for hours on a clear solution even talking to Acer (but they don't support using crysis disk)

If you need me to provide more DETAILS please let me know thanks bless youUsually BIOS versions are cumulative, the latest version should work for all variations. You really have nothing to lose, since at this point, your laptop is not fully functional.

Solve : RETREIVING HARD DRIVE INFO FROM BROKEN COMPUTER?!?

Answer»

Hi guys i was just wanting to pick your brains about getting photos off an old broken laptop.
I was told that you can simply remove the whole hard drive from the broken laptop and give it to a computer shop who can remove all the data/photos and put them on a disc for you.
I would imagine that would be possible but my question is:

Will this only retreive photos which were in folders on the computer when it packed in or will it also be able to retreive photos which were previously deleted from photo folders. I only ask because i had a lot of photos from a "once in a lifetime" holiday which i THOUGHT i had succesfully backed up to a flash drive but recently found out that it did not work properly and i had deleted the originals on the laptop to free up some space on the hard drive??

So to cut a long story short if i take the hard drive to a shop will i only get photos which were in current folders or will they also be able to retreive the ones i had deleted previously too??
Cheers
p.s some of the holliday photos had been emailed to me if that makes any difference!!
Only the ones that were on the disk when the laptop died.
But why not do this yourself and save the hassle?
It's fairly easy to slave the drive into a working machine and copy the data, saving yourself the money.Hi thanks for your repy. Im not much of a computer WHIZZ but what piece of kit would i need to do this??i have another dell laptop but i assume you cant just swap them?!
cheers mateDo you have a desktop PC?
Or can you borrow one?
You won't be able to do this with a laptop.
The good news is, you need no extra kit, and the procedure is not complicated.

This will let you hook up that HDD to any desktop machine and retrieve whatever data is LEFT...

'bout 8 bucks.Hi guys. yes i have a desktop in the office. What exactly would i need to do? i have removed the current hdd from the laptop but thats as far as ive got. If i need that adapter where would i get one and are they all different or are all the PORTS the same? obviously you have to plug the adapter into the old hdd but where do you connect it to the desktop- does it have an external port at the back somewhere or do you have to access the inside? Also how do you then select this drive instead of the desktop one or does it automatically bypass it? sorry to be so ignorant!! cheers-johnHook it up to the laptop drive...then a power plug from the power supply...then it hooks up to an IDE ribbon cable like you have CONNECTED to hard drives and CDRoms in the desktop.

To be safe i would hook it up to IDE2 or the cable used for the CDRom's

Then when you boot up go to Windows Explorer and it will show as an additional hard drive...copy the data you need then power down dis-connect it and reboot to burn the data to CD's if you have a burner. It is possible to recover the files that you deleted. Check out this website:
http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm
This program is fairly simple to use and can successfully "undelete" files from your hard drive.

Solve : Finding Internet History??

Answer»

Okay--I am sure this is a quite basic question for some but that's okay--I'm willing to admit that I am not a computer EXPERT! I wasn't sure where to post this question so I am posting it here in "Other."

If the History of viewed websites has been cleared through the Tools and Internet Options MENU (I use IE on XP) is there another way to still view previously viewed webpages or any information that might possibly give information of where someone has been going on the Internet? I'll be honest here...I am attempting to view where my young son has been going on the Internet as I have some SUSPICIONS but I don't right now have any type of software that tracks his usage. There may be cookies from certain sites... But if he's aware enough to delete the browsing history, I'm willing to bet he's removed any trace of where he's been

You could also get monitoring software, which once installed will e-mail reports to you of what a user has been browsing. EBlaster is one I've heard of, but never used this, or any other, monitoring program.

Someone ELSE may be able to suggest a free program though, as I don't know the best value or the best programs that are out there...Check the drop down box, he may not have cleared that.
If you're concerned, though, you should just talk to him.
Monitoring him without his consent defeats the object and he won't trust you.I agree with Calum. It's important to be open and honest with your son. If you do that, he may be inclined to show you the same courtesy.Communication is the easy way.

What rules were agreed on before this young man
started using online service?

You can easily use system restore to an earlier time.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

You can also discontinue internet service.

You see,I believe Internet service and mobile phones is a privilage, not a right.I totally agree with street 1 it is a privelige not a right to have mobile phones and internet.

However, the second has a more powerful CPU which is also dual-core.
If it came down to only those two, the first is better for gaming.
However, I advise finding something else entirely- Dell XPS and Alienware PCs are often very expensive and not good value.

What to look for - Core 2 Duo CPU, 1.8GHz or more.

1-2Gb of RAM, it can be easily upgraded. 1Gb is nice to have and is generally the "sweet spot" where it gives god performance without costing the earth, and 2Gb gives more performance but can be costly.

7600 class card or higher - this is the most important component for gaming. A 7900 class card would give much better performance at the cost of some battery life, higher heat production, and the necessity of a larger laptop.

7200rpm HDD - your games and programs will load much faster than with a 5400rpm drive.

OS - XP or Vista, your decision. Vista is still having teething troubles and will sap performance more than XP, but it is newer and has more features which you may or may not find useful.

I hope all of this helps you a little - you'll be able to find what you want, just keep looking. So what Labtop would you recommend for my needs?

What do you think of this one:

* Genuine Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit)

Thanks for advice!Gaming ....and College.

What's your Major ? ?Don't have one yet. I will be a senior in high school starting in september, but I plan on going into business once I enter college, still not sure what college though.

What do you think of that HP laptop? That's a GREAT laptop.
Fairly powerful graphics which support DX10, good RAM, fast CPU, and a TV tuner.
Plus Vista Ultimate if you're into that.
Nice price and good extras too, very nice find.
I'd say go for it.Does that really support DX10? I thought that Nvidie 8800 was only DX10 SUPPORTED video card? All GeForce 8 series cards and ATI RADEON X2XXX series cards support DX10. This ships free $2,321.99

lol "free shipping" Wow, lucky me. Did not know that. That's the one I'm buying.

Thanks for you advice all!

I really appreciate it.You're welcome.

Hi guys...

Was just WONDERING if anyone from the UK has done/knows someone that has done any of these courses?

I have looked into it and most of what I found was online learning (which would be ideal for me) but they were very EXPENSIVE. Some of the places I contacted quoted me at £4k (and upwards) for the N+ course, which is a bit above my budget for now. I could be looking in the wrong places I guess.

Anyway... any helpful info, COMMENTS or otherwise please LET me know

Cheers.

Solve : In need of help?

Answer» HI all in NEED of some help. As I am not a real computer expert I need to come here for some help. Well actually for my dad, he was watching a horse race and the buffering was running very slow so a screen popped up that said to download a faster version click here. So he did and with that the computer has gone into powersafe mode unfortunately we cannot get back into the computer and every TIME we try it comes up with a black screen that says powersafe mode. If anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this can they please reply thanks Sexynic i've never dealt with this before, but when does it say powersafe mode? like how long does it take and on what screen? It is going to power safe mode as soon as computer turned onhmm... sounds like malicious software..When the pop-up popped up, what did it say to download? A newer version of what? That is probably the problem.

Also, what your OS? As well as anything else that would be helpful (i.e. hardware)boot to windows in safe mode by PRESSING f8 (usually numerous times) when starting the pc, select safe mode and hit enter. log on as ADMINISTRATOR, not yourself or anything then reinstall the drivers for your graphics card. and go online and check to see if there are any updates for those drivers. also... if something suspicious says that a site isn't loading fast enough, just ignore it because it's usually and ad/virus. if you want codecs that are safe you can go to the divx or microsoft or freecodecs.com site

if this doesn't WORK please post back Quote from: reaper_tbs on June 18, 2007, 04:21:42 AM

Solve : Help! Screen jumping up and down?

Answer»

I think I have a virus, but I have run McAfee and no longer have any VIRUSES. (The first time I ran it, it found one virus; I quarantined and eliminated it). Could this virus have already infected my computer?

The problem: Everytime I open a page -- whether an internet site, email, or a word document -- after a few MINUTES, the screen STARTS moving up and down of it's own accord. It moves as if I'm moving the scroll bar with the mouse -- very quickly up and down. It's impossible to read documents or write, and I can't stop it from moving, even if I hold the scroll bar still with the mouse.

Can anyone tell me what I should do?? I have rerun McAfee a number of times (this is the only thing I know to do to eliminate a virus). Is there anything else I can do? Or will I have to erase and reformat everything on the computer?

Many thanks for any suggestions or advice! Sounds like a virus or some other malware. Or maybe a practical joke a friend is playing on you.
Check your task manager (Ctrl-Shift-Esc) and click on the Processes tab. If you find a process that is running and you don't know what it is or doesn't look familiar, END that process and see if the problem goes away. If you don't recognize any of the process names, do a screen shot and post it, or type out each of the process names and post them. Thanks! I've checked the task manager and there are 52 processes running. I'm not sure how to tell which are unfamiliar/not useful. There are a number listed under my username (which I assume should stay -- am I right?) and there are some listed as SYSTEM and NETWORK SERVICE. Would you recommend stopping some of the system or network service processes? Also, can you explain how to do a screen shot? Many thanks!Download and run in Safemode:

Secondly, you shouldn't run virus scans in safe mode, because safe mode limits what programs are running.Quote

Secondly, you shouldn't run virus scans in safe mode, because safe mode limits what programs are running.

This is the opposite of what many here suggest...you don't need programs running to track down a baddie...actually the reverse is true. The fewer processes and programs running the more effective the scans.Try using a different antivirus program also. Norton has a trial you can download. sometimes what one program misses, another picks up.Quote from: Dark Blade on June 18, 2007, 08:17:48 PM

What patio says is true. It's actually preferred that you run scans in Safe Mode because they are more effective that way. In Normal Mode, the infections are allowed to be active, which can make them more difficult to detect (they MAY be in hiding mode) and remove (because they're being used by certain running processes).

Solve : PalmPilot?

Answer»

A friend of mine GAVE me this thing the other day, and neither one of us really know what it is, but I've been playing around with it, and trying to get information about it on the internet. Then I thought of this place and I thought maybe you all can help. It says PalmPilot at the top towards the left, and on the right it has USRobotics. And it has a little cradle thing it can sit in, and it plugs into the computer. Just wondering what this thing is and what I do with it. Thanks How big is it?
How does it close?

Do you have a picture you can post at www.imageshack.us and link back to us with?

Did it look LIKE this:
http://i8.ebayimg.com/07/i/000/84/c6/787e_1.JPG
?
It looks excatly like the picture you had I registered at ImageShack and put on 2 pictures of my Palm. Here they are http://profile.imageshack.us/user/computercrazy/images/detail/#125/palmqu9.jpg Oh, OKAY

*looking up info*

From the information I have, it probably cant do a large amount of things, but its main purpose is for scheduling events, taking notes, etc

Try going to the US Robotics PDA website (if you can find it) there should be synchronizing software there that will allow you to backup the data to your computer, and USE your computer to make events and schedule them.

The device can probably hold 1-16 MB of memory, which is great for a device like that. Ok thanks one last question... it has a Mail on it, and it has Inbox, Outbox, and all that, and has an option to create and send a new e-mail. From what I've figured out, I'm suppost to somehow be able to hook it up with my e-mail and be able to receive and send e-mail on it... Do you know ANYTHING about that? Thanks The Palm Pilot site has tons of info on it...Quote from: ComputerCrazy2 on June 19, 2007, 10:08:33 AM

You are going to need the synchronization software to do that.
Does the PDA have a color screen?

(If it does, than it might have wireless capabilities through an SD WiFi card)

Search around on their website ( http://www.usr.com/home.asp ) and see if they have the software Yes, it has a backlight that you can turn off and on. Thanks for the link

Solve : Resolved: Misbehaving mouse?

Answer»

I have Win Xp. I have a logitech mini mouse that normally is very quick. I have taken to playing those games you buy on SHOCKWAVE etc...I notice my mouse gets slower and 'shakier' the longer I use it. What can I do? Is there an excellent mouse AVAIL. I don't like wireless and I NEED the mini size.
It seems like there ought to be something I can do to clear it up. When I reboot it works fine, which I have to do after I play a game and want to just browse again.
Microsoft says my drives etc are all up to date.

By 'the longer I use it' I mean when playing a game, not in ordinary browseing. If they are not fast paced bang-bang, shoot 'em up type games, it some times helps to reduce hardware accelleration. Right click desktop/click properties/click settings tab/click advanced button/move slider bar to the left.Is this a wireless mouse?

Possible causes:
Bad signal
Low battery It's an optical wired mouse. I am playing 'Snowy Lunch Rush' and I think its really fast paced. EVerything starts out normal, but when I advace to faster levels the mouse can't move fast enough and won't hit on objects when I move it there. It looks almost like when 2 magents repel each other. Know what I mean vern?New possible CAUSE:
Dimmed out optical mouse

Your mouse is most likely wearing out

Try borrowing one from a friend if no one else's advice works.
Then tell us if it works better I guess I just need to get a better mouse. I saw one called the blue razer especially for GAMERS. ha ! Now that ought to do it.
I increased the speed setting on mine to max lol and it's better, but I need more muhahahahahaI don't think it is the mouse. It was outdated driver. I got new gforce and everythings great Sorry about moving your post more than once, its a bit difficult to move some of these with the selection menu we get

Solve : Rob Pomeroy?

I just got done reading Rob Pomeroys latest entry on his public myspace, and it turns out, he is busy trying to find a house
Quote

So we put our house on the market... So it sold within two weeks... Now we need to find somewhere to buy, and quick!

We DECIDED to move, having seen the proposed plans for our extension. We need SUITABLE disability-adapted accommodation for our son Morgan as he grows older. We were thinking of extending the house we currently live in (which we love), but the plans demonstrated that we couldn't really do what we wanted without wrecking the character of the house and decimiating the kitchen. So we're now moving instead of extending.

Finding somewhere suitable is much easier said than done. First, let's be honest, we're very fussy. We know what we like in terms of character of property and type of neighbourhood. We have been spoilt where we are and we don't really want to compromise too much from the quality of the area we've been living in. Second, there is very little property in the area that (a) is suitable and (b) we can afford. If money were no object (hah - doesn't everyone wish that were true!) we would have no problem. As it is, the hunt is proving troublesome.

We did find an ideal property. Great location. Perfect amount of rooms. Great layout. Nice large garden (very necessary for my keen gardening wife - it's her therapy). The only trouble was that the seller wanted too much for the property, and even worse, apparently someone else was willing and able to pay it. So just as we thought we'd got it sewn up, we're back to square one.

If anyone has a spare £100,000 they don't need, feel free to send it our way!

Anyone?

Heh heh.

this happened 4 day's ago, i'm not really into pc terms, what's an Os by the way?
don't have any protections installed.

Already did what you suggest, still i can't see no icons when I open My Computer.

Don't really know what happened.OS= operating system or windows that you are using

have you tried doing a system restore to before this happened??

start
all programs
accessories
system tools
system restore

if that doesnt work then try this

ok your a SITTING duck WITHOUT anti-virus and anti-spyware programs... look at my signature and dl the programs... dont download AVG free if you already have a anti-virus program like norton or Mcafee..

install them update them, reboot in safe mode(rapidly tap f8 before windows loads), scan with each program one at a time.. My Os is Microsoft 2000 Professional.

I dont have any back-up, so I was'nt able to do a restore in my system.

Will those programs help restore my pc back to it's original performance?

=))
In Command Prompt, do dir /s /b, and see if anything comes up (checking if files exist).

Solve : Anyone remember BeOS??

I played with BeOS once or twice several YEARS ago. Apparently the creator sold his soul to Palm and dumped the OS going open source.
Anyone else used it? or currently use it? I've looked around for children of BeOS, but haven't had luck installing. Anyone know where to get the last release of it (R3, I think)?
Have not tried it but think the latest version (R5) is available here...Sadder than the OS itself dying his ideas on the actual changes to PC ARCHITECTURE that never materialised... That would have changed things dramatically.Quote from: Dusty on May 29, 2007, 05:08:44 PM

never heard of this OS... google here i come
http://haiku-os.org/ is the WEBSITE for it's child
If you figure out how to make a BeOS CD, let me know...
I've been playing around with beos. (Finally figured out what I was doing wrong to install it)
It's actually a pretty cool operating system. Extremely light-weight and boot fast. I timed it on my computer (1.2ghz cpu & 256mb ram) and it took less than 30 seconds, from the moment you push the power button, to the time you actually have a usable system. Windows XP takes somewhere around 1 minute and linux takes about 2.5 minutes.
BeOS comes bundled with just about everything you would need for an os. It has about a dozen games, document processing, software development, web server, a few cool screensavers, image manipulation and effects, video editor (haven't used it yet), 3d modeler, media player for audio and video.
BeOS can be networked with other computers, but I haven't figured out how, and since I don't have internet at home, I haven't researched it at all. With that said, I haven't attempted to connect to the internet either, although it should be possible and maybe even very simple.
The gui is very simple and easy to understand. I bet even my grandma could figure it out in a few minutes.
There's also plenty of programs you can download from bebits.com if you aren't happy with the pre-installed stuff.

Solve : Windows backup utility.?

Answer»

Hi, I have windows XP. I backed up my files using windows backup UTILITY, No problem there. When I try to open up file (which has over 6MB of files in it) I get the backup wizard instead of the 6MB of files that are stored in the file. I want to put these file on a DVD. IM confused please HELP! Tony T.I could be wrong on this, but I THINK the Windows Backup utility creates a sort of restore point rather than putting files into a folder, as it were.

I think you'd have to follow the wizard to get the files back... Although, I'm sure someone else on here could come up with a better response than mine I think your right, This utility is a restore point. How can I back up files and FOLDERS To a DVD for reformatting? Tont T. What burning software are you using?

There should be an option to create a Data DVD... Just select this option then put all the files you want to backup onto it.Hey, thanks for the info. I have Nero 7 And I have had nothing but problems BACKING up files to a DVD. A friend of mine recomended Cyberlink, Any good?
I wouldn't know, only programs I've ever used is Roxio's Easy CD Creator, and Nero. Been using Nero for a few years now and never had any problems with it.

I did find, however, that when trying to burn a data DVD with a DVD+R can cause problems. What type of DVD do you use?

DVD-R's haven't given me any problems so far.

switching from DVD+R to DVD-R helped me anyway, might be worth trying if your using +R'sYou got that right!, Found out the hard way with -R's. But Nero is calling for A RW DVD. Why such a rare DVD? At least I think that is what they call for.Thats strange. It should be fine with any sort of DVD, only reason I can think of doing that with is if you've selected to create a Data CD and input a DVD or vice versa.

Or (longshot guess here) it may be that you have set Nero to keep the DVD session open, which is why it thinks you NEED a DVD RW? I'd check that option is set to finalize the session, just to be sure.Infrarecord:

Do you still have the appropriate option marked in your Preferences?Okay, I think we have made it PERFECTLY clear that replying to the topic yields NO results...

Edit: Just tried moving the topic to see if it would rebuild its data file, no dough though. Noticed that. Still not sure on my end either about this post. At least so far it's an isolated INCIDENT. i realised that it happened after the post before mine on that THREAD... does that mean anything?

Solve : Troubleshooting toolkit./Resolved?

I already have:
Knoppix LIVE cd.
Ntfs4Dos
ReadNtfs
Bootdisk with Delpart
Boot cd's
Memtest86
Seatools diagnostics
OS cd's (all with COA)
Copies of Hal.dll, ntldr, ntdetect, boot.ini

Apart from regular backups would anyone care to post what is considered essentials in a troubleshooting toolkit please.it really depends on the trouble you have??Another good all rounder would be UBCD and/or UBCD4Win.
The former has a CLI, the latter a Windows-like interface.
Both include a lot of USEFUL tools.Quote from: unlovedwarrior on June 24, 2007, 02:01:20 AM

it really depends on the trouble you have??

Not really helpful when one is TRYING to prepare in advance, don't really want to wait for trouble before making some sort of effort to gather a toolkit..

But thanks anyway.

A good list to begin with...
I'd also consider adding bootdisks for all Windows flavors. A pain i know but you never know when you may need them.
Also the other HDD manufacturers diagnostics as well.

A browser of choice.
A HEX editor ( can be dangerous).
DXDiag.

And a collection of generic mouse, CDRom and video drivers.

Calum & Patio - thank you or your suggestions...

You're welcome, hope you find them useful.

Solve : creating database??

i am not sure in which category this question would belong...hopefully someone will browse through and assist me!

one of my (major) DUTIES at work is to monitor phone calls and record scores. right now it's done on paper, hard to track trends and such, and very very wasteful. i am looking for a way to do it on the computer, preferably on the server so others can access it (and leave comments, but not make changes). i envision a format similar to web polls, where you click a little circle or box to choose the answer. i would need it to track in lots of different ways: by category, by operator, by team, etc. i have heard that microsoft access could do this, but that it's terribly complicated. i am fairly computer literate, and pick up new programs well, but i have played around a little with access and am completely dumbfounded! thanks in advance for any tips, IDEAS, suggestions, offers to assist... i was so glad to find this site! -----ashleyYes, Access would be pretty much perfect for what you are thinking. Once you get used to it, it is pretty easy to use. You MAY be able to tweak one of the templates found here.http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/CT101426031033.aspxhere

If those are no HELP, post back and I will see if I can help you with your questions.wow. that was quick and wonderful. thanks!! i checked the website you offered, there are several templates that could work, the 'call tracker' or 'customer service' ones being, i think, the best suited. the 'tasks' one looks extremely useful as well! i am preparing to get our office up to ISO standards, and using these forms seems perfect. however, i am clueless as to how to make changes. can you give me basic tips? if i download a template, will it be self-explanatory? is there some tutorial i can use--preferably online, free maybe? can you beam yourself here and sit next to me and explain it all?!?!here i DONT know what version you will be using, 2003, 2007 or other so just put that infront of access then research.

Does anyone know why the desktop display on my laptop would minimize? I haven't been able to reverse it and my SCREEN display is now only a PORTION of what is should be.

I've tried the maximize button and it is already maximized. It looks like there is a one inch black border from the edge of my laptop screen to the actual desktop. The bottom tool bar (the start button, time, etc.) is still in place as is everything else that is NORMALLY displayed however instead of filling the entire 12 inches of the screen it's filling approx. 10 inches. What is going on?RIGHT click on your desktop, select Properties, SETTINGS. What's your resolution set at?Soybean, you are the best!!! I figured it out thanks to you. I'm not sure how it was changed but I got it back to normal.. Thanks.

Solve : busy computer?

Answer»

Hi: I've looked at a Dell computer that runs Windows XP. The really odd thing is that when the screen saver is on for a while, the hard drive is really busy. It won't stop unless you move the mouse and resume normal operation. It doesn't make SENSE to me that a screen saver (on that comes with windows xp) causes the hard drive to be that busy. Can anyone tell me why the computer would be doing that?

Thanks,What are the System Specs of this Dell computer? If I remember correctly, it's a P4 2.8 GHZ with 512 MB RAM. The hard drive has a lot of free space on it.The screensaver will constantly run...

As long as it continues to run...there will be hard drive activity.

There's also the possibility that other programs, running in the background, are also running the same TIME the screensaver is running.

This is actually a normal occurence.Yes, that it true, however I do find it a little strange that the drive is that busy. It's like the HD light is on continuously. I have never seen a HD that busy while running a screen saver in conjunction with other background programs.
When is the last time you updated and ran your malware software? The machine has AVG Free Antivirus and AVG Free Antispyware installed on it. I'm not 100% sure when it runs but I imagine it is on the default schedule (which is daily I think - I don't use AVG myself). It's not my computer so I can't be 100% sure. I am told by the owner that the scans don't reveal any dangers. The owner did say he had Zone Alarm installed at one POINT. It caused the owner a lot of grief so it was uninstalled and AVG was used. theantivirus scans daily but not the antispywareZone Alarm is a firewall program.

Does he use another firewall program? If not, is Windows Firewall on?

Update all malware protection...boot into Safe Mode...run a full-system scan using all your malware protection software...let your malware protection quarantine and/or delete any infections found...reboot normally and run the scans again.

Let us know your results...It could also be some defragmentation software running in the background.
Just wanted to chip that in, I'll *censored* out again now.see whats running by pressing start then run

enter cmd
press ok

then enter msconfig

then go to start up.

uncheck anything unneed like dvd player, quicktime, MS Office, etc

then press apply then ok and FINALLY restart

http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/basics/basics-120916.html
That's a one-at-a-TIME procedure. His question: How can I delete all the mail at once?I know you can delete the bulk email folder all at once but i don't think you can delete the whole normal inbox at once. I am pretty sure you have to do highlight all and then remove them page by page.Yeh, he could at least you the check box at the top of the list on a give page to select all items on that page and delete them.

I have a Yahoo Mail account but haven't used it much, and there's a later version which I have not used yet. Anyway, I see a button to view All Messages. I presume that means it does just that, REGARDLESS of how many messages are in your Inbox. If so, then cleaning out your Inbox should be easy unless you need to do a lot of screening out of certain messages.A follow-up to my previous post. Nope, the button to view All Messages does not do what I mentioned in my previous post.

However, you can go into General Preferences and change the number of messages displayed at time. The max is 200. That should help a lot.If you're in your Inbox...you won't be able to delete all mail in your Inbox.

At the bottom of the page, there's an option button to "check all". You can then delete all items that were checked.

As previously stated...you can delete a page at a time.

Your junk and trash folders can be emptied using one click.

Other than that...he'd have to setup Yahoo Mail with an email client like Thundrbird in order to do what he wants to do.I thought with yahoo mail it was a pay service only to get it to your outlook or thunderbird?Quote from: TehGerg on June 28, 2007, 10:49:16 AM

Solve : Looking for a decent free e-mail client...?

Answer»

I'm looking for a decent free e-mail client, other than web mail apps, that allows you to view and delete email from the server...before it reaches the client.

I've used clients like Outlook, Outlook Express, etc...but the only one I've found that lets you do this is IncrediMail...and its a pain in the neck. I paid for it, so I don't have all the advertisements I had when it was free...it's okay...I've used it for a while...I'm just ready to make a change...I get bored easy.

So...if anyone has any recommendations, just get back to me. I'd love to hear them and your experience with them.

Thanks in advance...

-Stevethunderbird.. there are a couple ones LINUX use that you might be able to use like evolution( i believe) and can't remeber the other one.Well...

I just downloaded Thunderbird...I'll give it a try. I'll let you know if it's what I'm looking for.

Thanks for the quick reply...Yah my vote goes to thunderbird also.Just downlaoded and installed...seems to be working like a charm. It'll take a little getting used to, but it's exactly what I'm looking for.

Ya know...this program has been recommended to me in the past by WillyW and several other members...I just forgot all about it and went on my merry way.

I'm glad I took the jump...nice program..."Thanks"...to all.I know I'm late, but Thunderbird would have been my first and only recommendation as well.
It's the only email client I've used, other than web-based access, and I think it's great.
Glad you like it.I have been using Outlook since i formatted last maybe its time to switch again The only thing I haven't liked about it...so far...is that it didn't minimize to the system tray...not to worry, though...I found the extension and installed the "add-on". Works like a charm.

Like I said...it'll take some getting used to, but so far...I like it.Have you been able to verify already that it allows you to view and delete email from the server...before it reaches the client? I'm curious how an email client that downloads email to a computer can do that?

What's the underlying concern here? Are you trying to deal with spam? soybean...

BINGO!

Spam is definitely a concern...because of what I do...not for the forum...but for my computer repair business. I have an email for links, for the webmaster, for myself, for info and for services...not to mention personal email from my ISP.

Thunderbird has a decent junk filter and learner. I'm just getting used to learning the application myself.

Actually...IncrediMail had an Advanced feature that let me look at the email on the server before downloading it. I could also setup IncrediMail with Message Rules that would allow me to add certain rules to delete this spam from the server before it even reached my computer.

Right now...I don't see that feature in Thunderbirs...unless I'm missing something. T'bird is quite new to me...I'm still learning its ins and outs.I use OE for most of my email and Outlook for one account. My ISP is Earthlink. I can access my mail via web BROWSER and set spam CONTROLS that are very effective in restricting spam from being downloaded to my computer. Basically, Earthink provides an online address book. If a sender's address is not in that address book, it is blocked from being downloaded. So, for personal mail via your ISP, you might take a look to make sure whether you may have some spam control options that you're not aware of now.

I also have a website and have a huge spam FLOW there. You can access a control panel, or "cPanel", for your web hosting account, right? Do you use it to access your mail via web browser? Do you have mail tools such as Squirrel or Horde, via your cPanel? If you haven't used them, take a look. You should find filter capabilities which may help sorting out the wheat from the chaff. Thanks, soybean...

Yes...I've tried the filters and spam controls within the cpanel of my host.

The problem is that even if you use Suirrel Mail or Horde...even though it does filter out the spam...along with other options on their server like Spam Assassin or another program that verifies whether or not your human or not...I forget the name of it.

Anyhow...I'm not a big FAN of web mail...
No matter what filters you use, the mail still remains on the server until you delete it. Like I said before...IncrediMail let you set up filter options that allowed you to block any email with certain characteristics, before it got to your client and subsequently delete them from the server. You could also use IncrediMail to view all mail on the server using its "Advanced" feature...from there, you could decide which email to allow through and delete those you don't. This feature, alone, is what sold me on IncrediMail, however, the other bells and whistles are totally useless...unless your one of those who like to "dress up" an email you send out with sound and images. The only problem with that is...noone can actually see the images, etc...unless they, too, are using IncrediMail. The person not having that particular program would only see attachments...basically, making the "bells and whistles' of IncrediMail useless.

I guess I'll just have to fool around...to see what i can find.

Solve : Win98 - colour and crashing probs?

Answer»

I am trying to help a friend who has problems with win 98 on his desktop (‘Spacewalker’ -homebrew?) but it might be a case of the blind leading the blind – I apologise!
Prob 1…the colours suddenly became haywire, - I have tried ‘color management’ options but what ‘colour profile’ should I be using? We only seem to get 16 bit. option.
Prob 2…tried to install latest AVG antivirus from a CD (downloaded separately) but only gets part way through before crashing. I have removed all other virus software as it was out of date.
Prob 3… crashing regularly!! sure slows up resolving the issues!
If it is a virus, then installing a virus prog seems important. Can I do anything before considering a complete reboot – and I’m not certain how to go about that!
(PS: I am trying to convince them to upgrade which is perhaps the next option!)
Spacewalker was a line of Shuttle motherboards, not necessarily bad ones.

The lack of color more than 16 may have to do with the video drivers. Either they need to be reinstalled, or they need to be adjusted. That is done by right clicking on the desktop and choosing properties. Start by looking in Control Panel/System and see what video adapter is listed.

The computer did not have any current antivirus on it? Any spyware protection? If you can get on the internet, you may want to go to www.trendmicro.com and try the free online scanner.

You can download and install Everest Home, run it and choose to make a report. Copy and paste the info here (at least the first part) and we can advise.

Do you have a real Windows CD?honestly i think that you might have a bad monitor, but it depends on if you have a flat screen or a CRT.
Thanks for your help guys. We have an outdated AVG antivirus so I downloaded the new version onto a CD and tried to install it on my friend's Spacewalker - all other AVG files and Nortons were deleted in case they were reacting. As I said, it won't complete the installation, and now when we try and go on-line (to try and check the system as per your Everest) it says "systemIN file no longer exists, and device file no longer exists" - I only deleted anything with AVG or Symantec in it. So can't go on line - and it won't close without switching the power off !! It has anti spyware and we updated that a short while ago.
The monitor is a CRT and has been fine - just the pic colours hopeless.
In colour management we have the option of SELECTING a 'color profile' what should this be?
This 'greenie' is struggling with this but appreciate your input.

So if it is a flat screen the monitor is ok or are you saying if they have a CRT then the monitor is ok ? ? ?i think that if you have a Flat Screen Monitor, you need to change the colors to 24 bit.
If your monitor is a CRT i would try moving the color to 24 bit.

So what's broke...the flat screen or the CRT ? ? ?

When offering advice it's best to think things through before hitting the Post button.

Is anyone interested in actually helping me with this?

GX1_Man, we only have a 16bit option under ‘Display’ – no other option. Where exactly do I find the video adapter? (– I told you I was a greenie).
And how do I re-install the device driver it now says I deleted and therefore can’t get a connection? I’m really sorry but I’m outa my depth!

Did you do this and answer the question? We are interested in helping, but you have to be interested in participating in the process. ( a driver?) but I will copy Everest to a CD on my PC and try and run it on my friend’s PC and see if we can learn anything. Watch this space! Which bit of info is most important? It's a big report, so it may take several posts. The first half is the most important.Sure is a lot of info (phew!) - managed to copy via CD and my PC! How's this for a start?........

Apparently you are using the onboard video SiS chip. Shuttle no longer maintains a driver for this.

http://global.shuttle.com/Download/Download_File.asp?Item=HOT-671

You may be able to find it on www.driverguide.com (registration is free, like here) and download it.

Another ALTERNATIVE would be to get a cheap PCI or older AGP card and use that.Only managed to locate a 6300 driver, not 6326 as installed. Anyway, the installed driver shows as ‘working properly’ (– presumably I can rely on this?). Maybe better just to wipe everything and start over ?(there is some possibility of an infection!) We have the Win98 CD. What’s the process? Or is it POSSIBLE to just go back to an earlier date with win98?Windows 98 has no "system restore" function. If you have the original CD andmaybe a boot disk if you need one, print out that full Everest report and save the driver you downloaded. If this a >2 yr. old install your machine might be a lot happier.

Be sure and download IE6 from the Microsoft site, as you will not be able to get any Windows updates until this is installed.

Solve : Cyber Bullied?

Answer»

One in three teenagers 'cyber-bullied'
Having private communications forwarded is the most common form of online harassment, followed by 'cyber-threats', according to a US study

Just under a third of teenagers have experienced some form of online harassment or 'cyber-bullying', according to a US study.

The most common form of harassment was having a private communication forwarded, followed by being the victim of an online RUMOR, or being sent aggressive messages, the study concluded.

About one in six teenagers had experienced having a communication they thought was private - such as an e-mail or text message - forwarded on to others by the recipient, and a slightly smaller percentage had been threatened online, the report, by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, said.

Overall teenage girls were more likely to be have experienced cyber-bullying than boys - 38 per cent of girls reported having been VICTIMS, as compared with 26 per cent of boys - with the number rising to 41 per cent among girls aged 15-17, the most affected group.

Teens who used social networks were also more susceptible - 39 per cent of those who were on networks such as Facebook and MySpace had been bullied, as opposed to 22 per cent of those who were not.

Fewer than one in 10 - 6 per cent - reported having had an embarrassing photo of themselves posted online without their permission, however.

"Bullying has entered the digital age," the report's author, Amanda Lenhart, said. "In the past, the materials of bullying would have been whispered, shouted or passed around. Now, with a few clicks, a photo, video or a conversation can be shared with hundreds via e-mail or millions through a website, online profile or blog posting."

The report surveyed 935 US teenagers aged 12-17.

I am the bully so the answer is no.yes, by raptor I'm certain of it. it was back in 2001, I was just a wee lad in a chatroom when he came in and it seems like he was in there just to target me. He just keep laughing at me i had only norton for for protection and it was 2 yrs old..

Just kidding...

i just felt like making a story up.i enjoy it. it's traumatising, it's misleading, it's dis-honest, it's all the fun things

so i voted ''i liked it'' Lol, Unlovedwarrior. If Raptor sees that post, he is going to cyber-bully you > "He just keep laughing at me i had only norton for for protection " Now thats funny !!! I get that I needed to vote for "ummm kinda, liked it *" and "only by Raptor ;-)"
He constantly bullies me, but I don't mind.

Seriously, other than that, which I don't COUNT as bullying because it's only friendly (at least, I take it that WAY) I've never been bullied online.
Bullying someone online is just pathetic - you can't actually do anything to them without permission unless the bully is a super-genius and the victim is an idiot.
Bullied through IM? Block them.
Bullied through EMAIL? Block them.
See where I'm going with this?

i "t" CUTE* Well,from the picture and specs..I would give it a

9.543 out of 10.wow thanks lol i new it was nice but i didnt think it was that nice..... NO WAIT YH I DID LOL

Yeah that is a nice case. 7/10

I dont know about you, but I think its a bit... over the top
I dont think I could ever need something so bulky on my desk, in it, or on the floor
Yeah, I kind of agree with you Zylstra I'd give it a 9/10

Mine might be a step up from that though.

I've got a 250mm 'turbine' in the front
a 250mm 'turbine' in my side panel, a 120mm for my hard drives and a 120 rear exhaust fan, and now I'm using water cooling for my CPU, so my case is pretty chilly.

I love my beasty Xclio full tower, it stays cool and all, but it is immense, it might WEIGH around 45-50 pounds loaded up with stuff, more with the liquid cooling system in it.

I use it to hold up my second 17" CRT, lol

Having a big case is fine as long as you don't want to haul it around to LAN paries.it actually aint that big , it slots down the side of my draws perfect just as my h-p did it just sticks out a bit more , the space inside is amazeing , i can fit 6 hard drives in there , which is what m going to do , all thats inside is the mobo , the video card , the intel chip and the 40gb hard drive ..... so much space , im gunna make it for pure gameing and the ram It looks very cool (slang) and very cool (temperature). Doesn't look like that thing can overheat easily. Something I need......

Does this only happen in Microsoft Office PRODUCTS?
Did you download/install anything recently?
What OS is this?
A picture could be helpful in this situation too.

Solve : Stop Reacting?

Answer»

My computer suddenly stops reacting when i using it.
I remember the first time it happened i was playing GTA:sa,the screen stopped suddenly and no more reations.I don't think the virus cause it because i haven't have any online service when the first time it happens, also it happened just after i bought my computer few days LATER and i tried to re-install the window but it still happens.

Signs of stopping reacting:
It begin "program busy" suddenly but the mouse can be moved like this

Then,it become no more reactions and the mouse can't be moved anymore,at the same time, some black bars appear and some place of the screen was twisted like this

It always happens ,sometimes when i open a folder ,sometimes when i playing a song with the media player, sometine when i doing nothing, and the black bars remain the same place but the twisted part will CHANGE positsion,
what's wrong with my computer, please HELP MEdo you have COMODO firewall installed ?i guest i don't have comodo firewall installed because after i installed window, i installed gta:sa immediately and play it ,then it happenedI suggest you uninstall gta:sa if it caused the issue. Update your malware protection and run full sytem SCANS in Safe Mode. Reboot and run them again in Windows normally.follow The Saviour's advice from here,, I only asked because both of my puters have recently started doing this since my install of Comodo? I really like this firewall but feel its my culprit in my freezes...... with Windows firewall turned off to boot ?

UPDATE* Windows GENUINE advantage << big brother checker was screwing me up and causing my freezes = "deleted"

Solve : CH slow or not loading pages?

Answer»

Its not CH's fault. Its the provider. the culprit is:

4001.gi-3-12.dcr1.slc.xmission.net [166.70.5.72]

This ROUTER sometimes fails to respond.....ok.....

I couldn't connect to CH like 20 minutes ago, it lasted for about 10 minutes though...Yeah...it was a little sluggish...but all seems fine now...

THANKS 2k_dummy!Sometimes I wonder "Why NETWORKING Solutions?"

I see that XMISSION is an ISP providing ACCESS to the Networking Solutions server, is this CORRECT?

Solve : copying data from one computer to another?

Answer»

I'm in desperate need of some help!

I have an OLD computer that has a fried video card. I have replaced it a few times and its works for a while then fries again. When I turn the computer on, I can hear it running but of course, no picture on the monitor. I don't CARE about saving the actual computer but I am desperate to get everything off of it.

Is there any way I can copy all of the stored data off of the old computer to my laptop without being able to see the old computer's screen?

I have learned my lesson and now have an external hard drive. Is all HOPE of salvaging my stored photos and files lost? Hello Carly83 and welcome to the CH FORUMS.

You can make life easier for yourself by purchasing a kit which will allow you to connect your hard drive to your laptop using a spare usb port. Such a kit is shown here and there are many more kits, possibly cheaper ones, in the market. Here is a review of the kit mentioned, seems to be a very simple hookup and the kit may come-in-handy for you or your friends on more than one occasion.

I suggest you make enquiries with your local pc hardware supplier for what is available in your area.

When you POST on the forums please advise what your Operating System (XP, Win 2k etc) is and what hardware you have.

Good luck
