Solve : Epson sx515w?

Answer»

My printer will not print colour, its coming out as a greeny blue wash of colour. I have ran the nozzle check and the magenta section is completely missing even though it is showing as full when I check the ink levels. I have already ran the head cleaning about 10 times and its just wasting all my ink. Do you have any suggestions?Ink levels determined by the internal software of the printer are NOT a reliable gauge of existing capacity. They are based on the number of cycles of use of the printer. If you cannot physically observe the level in the cartridge another METHOD is to weight compare it with a known full cartridge and that will give you a more accurate ink volume capacity of the cartridge. When you say"coming out as a greeny blue wash of colour" do you mean it is slurried and lacking definition. If so then it sounds like the print heads are allowing more ink volume through the nozzles than is necessary. If a printer will still permit printing when a cartridge is empty then it is misreading the ink capacity of a particular cartridge (such as the magenta POSSIBLY in this case). Or the head for the magenta is blocked or not functioning. We have a problem with a magenta print head on an Epson printer currently that all attempts at resolution have failed. Be careful of "investing" any money into a repair as usually it is less expensive to simply PURCHASE another. If your printer is still under warranty (including extended) then i suggest you exercise that option. truenorthHmm this sounds familiar and today I found one cure.

Basically i replaced the cyan cartridge and lo there was no cyan coming out of the printer.......eventually I deduced it was a bad cartridge but replacing it did not cure the problem...it seems like the 'bad' one caused some sort of blockage/airlock.

The fix....well at the back there happened to be a convenient hatch to acces the waste ink pipes and basically I pulled them out and sucked quite hard using a syringe on each one (drastic I thought but all else had failed)...I noticed only red/yellow from the color one but it suddenly gave blue as welll..hmmmm. I replaced the pipes and sure enough cyan had returned and all was fine..
I discovered the bad cartridge because I put it back in and the same happened so I went through the same routine.

This was on a 4 month old B40w but I was in a hurry and had no TIME to MESS about with warrantees and epson being awkward.

From what i read it appears there is a separate route for priming rather than through the head jets so no damage that I had feared occured but of course try this at yer own risk.

hope that helps

Mike

Can you not move the window so that it is visible again?

usually you can access OK and Cancel with Alt+O and Alt+C respectively, and Yes and No with Alt+Y and Alt-N. (it will ALWAYS be one of the letters in TEH caption)).

the "Scan your computer" window doesn't have a "Scan" button, it has a "Next" button. so if for some reason it's off screen use Alt+N.Thanks
No the window cannot be moved, because the screen is so small and the window is at its smallest, there is no WAY to move it so I can see the bottom.

Solve : Copy a read only DVD disk?

Answer»

The problem I am having and need help with is. How to make copies of a READ only DVD MEMORIAL disk from the wake/FUNERAL of my mother. The funeral home does give you the first copy, as part of the funeral costs. Then they sell copies, but that is costly. The disk contains old pictures/photographs, printed DOCUMENTS, letters sent to her, etc. And has a music background. The disk does not play on the computer, but plays fine on DVD player. It has two folders on it one is AUDIO the other is video. I have tried diskcopy, copy E drive, various copying programs, some being, DVD Fab, DVD shrink, Ashampoo Burning Studio. But all seemed to come up with a read error of one kind or another. And will not allow me to make a copy. I look forward to someone being able to give me some kind of answer that will allow me to copy the memorial disk. Any help I can get would be very much appreciated. If sympathize with your plight, but we do not offer help circumventing any form of copy protection. Sorry. Thread locked.

Solve : 24" Full HD monitor - help please!?

Answer»

I am just about to take possession of a pretty good pc (i7/6GB RAM/1GB GPU etc) and am looking to buy a full HD 23/24" monitor to go with it.
It has to have an HDMI input and preferably 16:9.
I don't want to spend more than £150 on it. I KNOW they exist as I have seen quite a few but my knowledge of computers doesn't cover monitors very well so I'm a bit lost.

This will mostly be used for multimedia use and a bit of gaming so refresh rate is semi important.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
THANKS,
BooWhy does it need to have hdmi? Are you planning on hooking it up to a dvd player or digital cable? If it's just being used on your computer, I think you should only need dvi.
In my opinion, refresh rate is a non issue for today's lcd monitors. Any lcd should do just fine. If you're doing a lot of photo/video editing, try to get something with a good contrast ratio. Having a low contrast ratio can really screw up your editing.

Take a look at newegg.com for their monitors and sort through your requirements. I know all their prices are USD, but it should give you a good starting POINT, and I don't know what sites are available in your country. I think newegg is one of the best places for doing research on electronics. I always start there even if I end up buying something somewhere else.

Solve : Learn DOS without blowing up my computer??

Answer»

Hi everyone! New here and don't know anything about computers.

0 computer skills!

Got curious when I saw the "DOS" forum. Though I don't know enough to even make a question about DOS in it. From the looks of DOS:

You can like change your computer upside down.

Experimenting is one thing. Though permanent damage to my computer is another.

Is it POSSIBLE to safely learn DOS ? Like how I screw around with learning HTML using Notepad?

Thank goddess I LEARNED to save the files as .htm that way I can see how horrible the dumb sites I make look! LOL

Thank you everyone for your responses!I find it intriguing given your other post on the hardware forum where you profess such limited knowledge/skills re computer (zero i believe you profess) that you would be asking a question about "DOS". First that you would even be aware of the term and secondly why you would put a PRIORITY on that when we are so way beyond the fundamentals of DOS in todays modern operating systems. Perhaps you could explain that seeming paradox? truenorthThe contents of the DOS forum these days rarely ever have anything to do with actual DOS.

For a little background, DOS is a MS Operating System that was rather popular and commonplace for quite a number of years.

Nowadays, almost all of the questions in the "DOS" forum are not about DOS but rather about the Windows command interpreter, cmd.exe.

Quote

From the looks of DOS:

You can like change your computer upside down.
Not sure what you mean. Very few windows features are hidden away as Command Prompt applications, and those that are are boring business-y things to do with setting File ACLs and other ho hum tasks.

If I am to understand what you might mean by your question, however, you might be thinking of Batch files. Batch files allow you to sequence a group of DOS commands together into a small program of sorts that the interpreter runs. In general, this is what questions and discussions in the DOS forum are about, somebody needs help/assistance with their batch file or creating a certain batch file or a certain function that they need to perform with a batch file.

Anyways, with notepad you can create batch files (and save them as ".bat" as you save your web page files as ".htm" or ".html"). then you can double-click to run them.

Of course wether it's "dangerous" depends on what your working with. If you work with commands that destroy data and do something wrong, you could erase files that you didn't mean to erase. Generally though unless you REALLY screw up (I can't really think of a way to do it on purpose at the moment) you're not going to mess anything up. A quick example is easy to demonstrate.

paste the following in a notepad file:

Code: [Select]dir %userprofile%
pause

save it as a ".bat" file somewhere, and then double-click it, and you should be presented with what many call a "DOS window" (but is more accurately called a Command Prompt Window) which will list the contents of your Profile Directory ("Directory" is the real name for Folders, Windows just pretends they are called folders so fewer people get confused), and then it will say "press any key to continue". In this case we USED the command "dir", which is a fairly commonplace command for listing the contents of a directory. We told it to look in our user profile by giving it %UserProfile% which is a variable that contains the appropriate directory PATH for your profile. In my case, it expands to "C:\Users\BC_Programming" so dir lists the files contained there. Then the pause instruction tells the command interpreter to wait until you press a key.

Here's a "tutorial" on batch file creation that might help explain the concepts a little better then I have.

Isn't this where we introduce Linux? or maybe virtual machines?

If you're that interested in command line, perhaps you should check out Linux, since that's an operating system that still relies heavily on the command line.

Also, if you're doing stuff in the command line that you are worried about screwing up your system, create a virtual machine with Windows or Linux and create a snapshot of the system before doing your experiments. That way if you really screw it up, you can easily revert to a stable state.

Solve : I was wondering...?

Answer»

Is there any utility or software that i can use that will tell me what firewall my comp is using?
I have found that will tell me how well my firewall is working, but I am CURIOUS to know if there is a software that can tell me what my comp is using.

I know it sounds weird but it would be like totally awesome if someone knew of a program like this.If you have a firewall installed you will know.
Checks your programs list.
Also, Vista and XP come with BUILT in firewalls, as do some Linux DISTRIBUTIONS (unsure about Mac), so you may have one of those for all the good it will do.
You may also have a hardware firewall, in which case the documentation on your modem or ROUTER will tell you.

Solve : Motherboard Terms??

Answer»

Hi all.

This may seem a bit strange but I was wondering if anyone could tell me the definitions of the terms found when buying motherboards, I found a few on the sites dictionary but just wanted to get a reply from someone else to make sure im not mistaken.

Also if possible could you please explain how they relate to the motherboard itself.

Anyway here they are:

S775, P35, FSB1333, DDR2, PCIEx16, SATA2, RAID, GbLAN, 1394a, ATX, DES, SATA, 2xPCIE2.0, Dual DDR3-1900, Dual PCI E x16, SATAII RAID, PATA, GbE LAN,1394, 8Ch DTS, UDES.

I found or already knew most of them but just wanted the terminology of them.

Also kinda wondering what the actual names of motherboards mean such as:

GA-X48-DS4 or GA-X48T-DQ6, more wondering about the X48/DS4 if they mean anything or its just the actual name of the motherboard and no other meaning.

Thx again, I know its a really newbie question but I do wish to know what it all means when I buy a motherboard and what not.
S775 - the CPU socket, You must buy a CPU that sues this socket. 775 is the newest mainstream Intel socket, so new Intel chips will work in that board.
P35 - that's the chipset, which controls most of the functions of the board. P35 is a fairly new mainstream/performance chipset, I have a P35 board myself and it's very good.
FSB1333 - the maximum FSB speed the board officially supports.
DDR2 - the board supports DDR" RAM, which is the most common type around now.
PCIEX16 - it has a PCI-Express X16 slot, which means modern graphics cards can be added.
SATA2 - that's a socket for modern hard drives, CD drives etc.
RAID - a way of using multiple hard drives together.
GbLAN - a LAN (ETHERNET) connection that can work at up to 1Gb/sec.
1394a - this means the board has Firewire connectivity.
ATX - the form factor. This is the most widely used today and will fit in most cases.
DES - Dynamic Energy Saver, a feature that can help the board to use less power. More of a gimmick IMHO, jumping on the energy bandwagon.
2XPCIE2.0 - I would THINK that this means the board has two PCI-Express sockets, these could be any standard without further info.
Dual DDR3-1900 - two sockets for the newer, very expensive DDR3 RAM, up to 1900MHz.
PATA - a standard for older hard drives, CD drives etc.
8Ch DTS - onboard sound.
UDES - part of the sound specs.

Motherboard names are specific to the manufacturers. the two you name are Guigabyte boards - GA for Gigabyte, X48 for the chipset. DQ6 is the high end motherboard, DS4 is slightly lower end. The T indicates only DDR3 support.

These terms on their own won't help MUCH. If you're looking for advice on what board to buy, give us a budget and what you want to sue it for and we can help you out.

By the way, welcome aboard!Ah thanks so much for the info, pretty much what I knew or found but yours is more detailed ;p

Yeah I was just building a PC for myself and honestly the terms were getting to me

Again thanks so much

And thanks for the welcoming You're welcome.
Any more info you need, just ask.

Solve : Linux/Windows data recovery?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently installed Debian Linux over a drive that contained a Windows 2000 system. Is there any way to recover the Windows DATA?

I know there are programs out there that can attempt to "undelete" FORMATTED drives, but I'm only aware of those that stay within the same operating system.

Thanks!Do you have any other operating systems installed on the COMPUTER?
You might want to check out www.e-fense.com/helix. Helix is a computer forensics/data recovery linux distro and is supposed to have tools to recover files and partitions. I know the windows side does, but haven't done much testing with the linux side.Hi, thanks for the reply.

Right now it's only Debian. Before, it had Red HAT Linux and Windows 2000 on one PARTITIONED drive; it's the files from the Windows that I want to recover.

Solve : AIMM definition not in CH database?

Answer»

The ole' AIMM's are not MENTIONED in the CH database, I came across one recently. I couldn't remember the meaning of the abbreviation AIMM, so i looked here, and it wasn't in the database, had too Google it.

For those of you who don't know, an AIMM is an AGP Inline Memory Module, They serve as dedicated graphics memory, but I thought they where ditched back in the days of pentium II's, evidently I was wrong. 'Cause, here sits one in a 7 or 8 year OLD PIII system.

The module I pulled from the board is below, though the device in the picture is DIFFERENT than the one i have, its the same unit.

http://www.alancomputech.com/176755-001.html

The module was on this old Compaq board a friend gave me, its a 4MB module @ 133MHz. Its an old socket 370 Compaq desk pro board with APG. So I finally, i have a socket 370 board with APG, now i can setup an old win98/2k system for really old games once i get my hands on a 1.3GHz PIII or celeron, assuming the board supports it, i have yet too check. I'll be amazed if the old board supports this 32MB AGP nVidia MX400 card, 'cause, in this boards day, 32MB was like.. 512MB CARDS these days, though, in its day, hardware/driver compatibility was a nightmare no matter what you had. (especially if you ran windows ME, which is what i SUSPECT the Compaq this thing came out of was running)

Solve : PSU Question??

Answer»

I have a Biostar 478 board that has a twenty four PIN CONNECTOR. I have a psu that just has twenty in the CASE, would I be able to run the board useing it?You should be able to...

What other cards are attached to the board?

The extra 4 pins provide an ADDITIONAL power rail to cards like PCIe and video cards.

The motherboard can be powered by the 20 pin connector, as long as there are no additional cards on the board that require the 4 additional pins.

The connector will be offset on the board, but you can pick up an adapter to fix this...for around $5 (USD).Its not going to be a high END pc. Maybe just an Ide extra drive card.

Solve : play some tricks??

Answer»

Hi guys,
i just wanted to ask all u experts out there, do u know any good TRICKS u can do on ur computer to ur friends in a CHATROOM?

I jsut know the one where u make the screen shake but only i can see that its not in a chatroom.

So any ideas will be great thanks I know MSN has a 'nudge' feature that will shake everyone's screen...

What chat program and OS are you using?a really cool trick would be to redirect the dns to a different site that uploaded old gospel hymns and made them play at full blast for 2 MINUTES and 24 seconds and then rebooted the computer. But I can't tell you how to do that because it's against forum policy. Sorry A brilliant trick would be to wipe Windows, install Ubuntu, and insist on the user learning to use Bash for everything.

Some would say that's a kindness!

I knew of someone who would go to a particular "big box" retail establishment where the general help wears blue polo shirts, and the computer help wears shirts and ties, and reboot their PC's to the Puppy Linux he carried on his USB drive.

At same said establishment, I may have perhaps powered down at least a dozen PC's in an attempt to get some attention. I'm not PROUD of such alleged behavior, but in theory, I was just looking for someone to say some variation of, "I'll be with you as soon as I can." (Several MANAGERS had perhaps walked by, also -- too important to stop and help a lowly customer...if that indeed happened.)In a chatroom??

Solve : XP SP3?

Answer»

I know that the latest service pack is a collection of downloads that have been previously been released. I heard that there where potential problems with the new service pack an wondered if this was true.Have you seen this post? However, to my knowledge, no one here has had problems with it." raises hand ".........

There's one...no matter where ya go... Glad it wasn't me this time. Just 2 customer machines...both lost all web connectivity. Resolved by simply un-installing it and i didn't see any correlation HARDWARE wise between the 2 machines so i just advised them to wait awhile.
Here's another KB article that should be read prior to SP3's INSTALLATION: 950717I installed it on the HP backup rig my bro has setup for himself. So, lets see.. where too start..

Countless BSOD's, IRQ errors, Memory Management Errors, Errors when I installed any AGP card, and it killed a 256MB RAM stick I had in the HP. SP3 seems too turn XP into windows ME, actually, I take that back, its worse than windows ME. I've never had that many problems with windows ME, and its the worst operating system I've ever used. But thats microsoft for you, take a great product, turn it upside down, and shake everything good out of it, then sell it too you acting like its a flawless jewel. I had a problem with SP3 on a Compaq computer. It really sucked, it was my step dads computer, and he dislikes it very much if it gets messed up.

Its not a problem with Microsoft though. Its a problem with HP. They used the same disk image on the Intel computers as they did on the AMD computers, resulting in this issue.

This issue also occurred for some people with the SP2 upgrade. Most companies have figured out that its NOT a good idea to do that....So its bad all together an just remove it then. I'm removing it any way. What files should I look for?are you having problems with it or are you just trying to be safe? If you're not having problems with it and you already have it installed, don't uninstall it. My guess is that less than 10% of computers aren't going to like it.Thats only about 5% but I've already installed uninstalled it for safety reasons. Thought it was causeing problems something else though. If SP3 (and I am saying this now, foot down) is installed on your computer and has NOT had any BSOD screens, do NOT bother uninstalling it. Removing Service Packs in this manner usually results in more system issues DUE to the fact that you are modifying more crucial files, and trying to switch them back.

In my opinion, Service Packs shouldent exist, and it should just be slowly released through the regular Windows Update service. That would be the most efficient and secure way to accomplish fixes.

If you are using a computer that is NOT a Compaq/HP computer, you should be fine installing SP3. SP3 brings many bug, performance, and security patches that make your computer better.

This is the same story with SP2, and SP1. Both previous service packs have had problems, eventually they usually get sorted out. If you are uncomfortable installing a service pack on a computer, you might wait off until its mandatory and delivered directly through Windows Update to you. (RIGHT now, you have to select that you WANT it on the Windows Update website) I unisntalled it any way even thought its a custom made pc. I rather not take the chance an I do agree its just hard to do on a dial up system.

Solve : How do you check the temps on your computer??

Answer»

I'm just reading through several of the forums, trying to gain a better UNDERSTANDING of computers, and in some posts, people are telling them to check their temps.

...how exactly do you do that?

There are several programs out there.
Notable ones would include Speedfan, RealTemp, and Core Temp.
Depending on the hardware involved each may give different readings and may need adjustments.I have SpeedFan installed; I've had it installed for over a year, maybe two years or longer. If you try it, you may see generic terms for different items for which it displays temps find yourself wondering exactly what components it's referring to, since it may list 3, 4, or more temps, depending on your system.

To identify what the generic terms meant, I ran another utility called EVEREST Free EDITION. It also gives temp info but it's designed to generate a very detailed report on your system, so I see it as overkill as a tool to use mainly for temp readings. But, with the additional detail it provides, running it one time can give you some info to help identify the generic terms shown by SpeedFan. Then, you can change the name in SpeedFan.

Another way I could identify temps shown in SpeedFan was to access my BIOS, which shows two temps.

SpeedFan tells me 4 temps: CPU, motherboard, HARD DRIVE, and another one simply labeled Temp1. I do not know what the latter is.Some times depending on what brand of your bios it will be in there. Thanks.

No prob just look us up again if you need us. CH Where your Computer needs finds solutions.

Nope, there isn't actually. It just doesn't EXIST. The only thing in PLACE at the moment is mobile "broadband" which is very Although my community has started a campaign to bring PROPER broadband to the area (http://www.skeheenarinky.com/broadband). Unfortunately, proper broadband in something we'll be waiting a while for in this country.

Solve : My laptop just keeps on turning on and then off...?

Answer»

I have a Compaq laptop. It just keeps on turning on and off. I don't even touch it. If I hold the plug that connects to the laptop with pressure without letting go, it will stay on. What's going on?SOUNDS like the power cord or connector has developed a break, or the jack inside on the motherboard. If it's on the power cord, it can be repaired or replaced much easier than TAKING apart the laptop.Did you say it would not come up in safe mode?
Well, can you get into BIOS?
Does it boot from a FLOPPY?
Could also be something with a battery fault. Why: You clearly said when u dont hold the plug in the wall tightly it will not stay on. That means its faulting the connection, causing it that when u unplug it the battery refuses to work, or the cord is bad.

Can you boot it up without it plugged in? If not, its definetly a battery fault. Replace the battery imediatly as it could be leaking acid inside of the COMPUTER, and if it is, it will eat away at the inside of your computer and your screwed.

(No offense, don't warn me mods D:)How do I do these things?

At this point I don't think being able to run off battery power is a priority.

The OP came with a problem in not being able to run off AC wall power due to a bad connection at the laptop, not the wall outlet. The first priority is to get the cord or jack repaired so that the laptop will run off AC power.

While their have been some reports of some dangerous batteries, this is not common. I don't think there is any reason to panic about this at this point. If the laptop is going to the shop to check the AC power, the technician can open the battery compartment to check out the battery too, if desired.

If you want to try this yourself, Vickie, just turn over the laptop and remove the battery cover from the backside. Take it out and SEE if you can see any leaking or corrosion on the battery.

The main thing now is to get your power cord or connector jack repaired so you can run off wall power.

Solve : faceparty the uninvited guest??

whilst our family computer was scanning I noticed 'faceparty' DETAILS, login and what looked like names of people CONTACTED. No-one in the family is admitting to being a user of faceparty and its been suggested that it has infiltrated the machine when my daughter was using MSN. Does anyone know if this could be possible or am I being made a FOOL of? I'm quite sure no such "infiltration" occurs from visiting msn.com. I've visited msn.com many times and have NEVER noticed any such phenomena. YEAH, you busted someone and they don't want to admit to it.

No, they're sent from the mail server as normal mail would be when, for instance, a user clicks a submit button. Sometimes the do-not-reply address does EXIST and works like a normal email account, i.e. can accept incoming mail. Usually though the mail server is configured to block all incoming mail. As kpac touched on. Do not reply addresses are sent from a server. An automated server.

Solve : How to completely disconnect Remote Desktop??

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I had to grant someone a remote access to my computer TODAY. He used "LinkMeIn" and I remember I had to type in the 6-digit PIN to start the connection. Once he finished what he had to do on my computer, I clicked the red "X" at top to disconnect.

Since I am a NEWBIE and know absolutely nothing about remote desktop thing, I'm just wondering was that enough to completely stop the connection. Meaning he won't be ABLE to access my computer anymore, correct?

Your suggestion is much appreciated. Thank you. :-)I believe without the PIN being typed in he's not going to be able to re-connect. If you're concerned about him reconnecting you could always uninstall the PROGRAM. That'd be a SURE method of preventing any connection, although a little drastic.

Okay.
PHP is a programming language. I'll probably hit you up on some programming questions that I'll run into.. I have this fat book, C++ Primer PLUS 4th Edition by Stephen Prata, that has been sitting on a shelf for months. In the next few days I'm going to finally pick it up and get going with it..PHP was a scripting language in the beginning.EEVIAC C++ is fine too even though I hardly know anything about it. =D
Preferably the ones I know, but any questions are welcome.

Solve : Firefox memory tip?

Answer»

While researching memory related issues in Firefox stumbled across a suggestion I CAME across that seemed to help (not solve) with the overall ISSUE that I thought I'd share since didn't see it posted in any past posts here.

In the Firefox Extensions (Tools / Add-ons) do the below two things

* Uninstall older Java Console's (should only have latest (6.0.18))
* Disable Java Quick Starter

This did help reduce overall memory usage and KEEP things more stable for when you have Firefox running for days. But still getting systems with a lot of memory usage.

I'm mostly curious to why SIMPLY having Firefox open on a standard web page with no extensions installed and not doing anything on that computer would increase the memory.

Feel free to share any tips you've come across. The Java Plugin is a major slowdown taking a few second longer (which is ages in my young EYES) per page, updating it helped a bit but disabling it is a major improvement, nice tip!

Solve : IT tech jobs??

Answer»

Are there alot of jobs out there for people with a MASTERS in IT? What kind of work would one expect to be going into with this degree? Are the jobs available challenging?Do you have a master's degree, or is that your goal?I'm sure there is a place out there somewhere for someone with a Masters in IT..

If you have no actual experience in the IT industry, however, it might put a damper on it.. An experienced person with NO credentials is more likely to land a position over someone with a lot of credentials with no experience... But then again, it could go the other way around... Some businesses may require some degree of credential..

Experience can come from many places though, IMO... Aside from working at my college for over six months, helping in the IT department, I've engaged in LOTs of self-study, help friends and family, and help out here when I can... If you stick around here and are successful in helping people, you might be able to get a professional reference from CH Admin..
Quote from: Aegis on February 17, 2010, 08:34:42 PM

Do you have a master's degree, or is that your goal?
Its my goal. I WANT to get a bachelors at USF first and then go to another school for my masters(cant figure out which one but I got four years to choose right?). I like the idea of working for a company and maintaining servers. It sounds like a challenging job am i right? From my understanding most people with masters degrees are software / hardware DEVELOPMENT ENGINEERS. I really don't think maintaining a server would require a masters degree. However, that being said there are extremely complicated servers (farms) that I would imagine are much more complicated and it properly would be beneficial to get as much education as possible.

Often when needing to maintain servers it usually requires a good understanding of networking more than anything. Personally if you're set on getting your bachelors and not going for any type of certification. I'd shoot for that first and then see where you want to go once you've got that. For the most part, I think getting a Masters is overkill. Sure, it'll help, but it's not really necessary. Simply having a Bachelors can easily land you a six-figure programming job.Quote from: CBMatt on February 19, 2010, 05:35:14 AM
six-figure programming job.

six figures ?

maybe I'll do that instead. I did pick up programming recently and find keeping up with the latest hardware, constantly, a bit boring.. With a few minor exceptions C++ doesn't seem to be that hard to understand so far..I'm not even talking about anything as complicated as that. If you get the right job at the right place, you can make a lot of money. I've seen companies offering about $180,000 yearly for JavaScript writing with a BS. Of course, this was before the economy went south, so these jobs are surely a lot harder to come by right now.*jaw drops*

wow, that's a lot of money...

In my view it should never be about the money but more about what you enjoy doing. Personally rather be doing something I love doing and not make much money then be doing something I absolutely hate doing but making a lot of money at. Also often when you make that much companies expect a lot. For example, my last corporate job paid very well but I and others were constantly working several hours into the night, and not getting anything for it since I was on salary and not hourly pay.I'll take the money and hate what i do...
For a few years...at least.Yeah that's actually a good thought assuming the pay was really good.Honestly, I'm not particularly enthusiastic about general information technology. The reason I'm into it is because I believe it creates an enormous amount of independence. The world more or less revolves around computers these days, and in knowing a great deal about them, you can save your self a lot of money in repairs, be in a position to help your friends and family, and be able to find a job virtually anywhere computers are dominant, including other countries, although there may be a language barrier... I think that's what I like most about learning information technology, the independence it creates. If I'm going to be bound to the IT industry I'd rather be doing something creative like programming. I can definitely have some fun in that. I put off learning to program for a long time because if I'm going to find a job in the IT industry, it would be easier to be a repair technician or network assistant than a programmer, IMO, and learning all the hardware first will help in learning to program..

In a nut shell, I'm finally doing what I what I really want to do in the IT industry which is learning programming, and if I happen to make a "lot" of money doing it at some point, then that's fine with me.. Incidentally, if a company requires a BA as part of a programmer's qualification, I would only have a couple more years to put in, in college. I've already got an Associates degree in Electronics technology..

Solve : Formatting / Uploading Pictures Problem.?

Answer»

Hello,

Having a slight problem getting some pictures from my camera on to my laptop.

I have a USB multi-card Reader / WRITER which I have been using fine for a few months now as the MEMORY card slot on my laptop was basically broken.

As I say, I have had no problems PUTTING this in and taking my pictures from the card on to my computer until today - Now when I put in the card reader and try to open it up I am told I cannot do so until it has been formatted (I have no problems with formatting the card as nothing of major importance is on there at the moment) although when I do click to format I am told that windows is unable to format it either.

This is a major pain as I have no idea why it has now started asking for this then not allowing me to do so.

Not really good with this sort of thing so any other info that is needed please feel free to ask.

Thanks 1) There's a card and a cardreader. What card is it? MMC? SD? MSPRO?

Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo, 2GB1) Start > run > devmgmt.msc
2) Start > run > diskmgmt.msc

Look in device manager if your card isn't listed as 'external harddrive' or something.
Look in disk manager if you can format it from there.

Have you tried formatting the memory card in your camera?

I've seldom seen web pages using SILVERLIGHT, Microsoft's counterpart to Adoble's Flash Player, but some of the Olympics are being streamed on nbcolympics.com with Silverlight. If you're not watching the Olympics on TV, have you seen some of it on the internet? I've watched a little online, just to try it out. But HONESTLY have been enjoying it a lot more on TV.

Also recently found that if you SEARCH for "Olympics" in Google the first RESULT is the current medal count. Pretty cool.

Solve : can't reinstall a OS?

Answer»

I have a Dell computer with a 500 gig hard drive. I formatted it, but when I try to install an OS on it , it loads the first files of the OPERATING system, and then go to the fatal blue screen and no further.
I also have problems trying to make changes in the BIOS. When attempting to make changes in the boot sequence, it tells me that I have to unlock it by putting in a administrative password. I got this computer from a friend and he said he put no administrative password in the computer.
Anyone have any suggestions? You can definetly bypass the bios password, but im not sure im alloud to tell you how on these forums.. you might try deleting the PARTITION and creating a new one before installation, you should also provide more information.. eg :

what did the BSOD say?

You may safely ignore this post.

What is the blue screen error you get?I am trying to install Windows XP Professional

The blue screen says it went to the blue screen to keep from damaging the computer and to uninstall any programs i might have installed or any drives I might have installed. Nothing got install other than a few files while tring to install windows.
At the bottom of the blue screen it had the following
***Stop: OXOOOOOO7B, OXF75D2524, OXCOOOOO34,OXOOOOOOOO,OXOOOOOOOO)***Your first post says you cannot change the boot order in bios. Are you actually booting to the Windows CD? If so, you don't need to change anything else in bios. Boot to the XP CD and before installing the OS delete the existing partition and recreate it. Then start the install routine. Does that work for you?Allan the computer will boot to the Windows CD after I press F1. When the computer starts to boot up it gives me 3 options. Press F1 to boot from CD. Press F2 to enter setup utility, or press F5 to run computer diagnostics.
I have ran the diagnostics, which is totally for memory, and if I press F1 it begins installing some windows files, but gives me no option to do anything. It simply INSTALLS some windows files and then goes to the blue screen. Is it an actual Windows CD or is it a repair cd provided by the computer manufacturer? What OS? If XP you may need the sata drivers. The key issue is what CD are you using?
Is it a full install of XP?
IF YES THEN
Was another OS on the system?
IF THERE WAS
and if that is stopping the Windows install then do this:
With a Windows 98 floppy dis you can delete the partitions using the FDISK program.
In rare cases XP can not install if another system has altered the disk. Maybe because the disk was made into a dynamic disk by VISTA.oooh, oooh, I know! :raises hand:

STOP 0x7B, or "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" occurs under one of a few conditions:

1) The boot drive is moved from one hard drive controller (or motherboard with different controller) to another.
2) The boot drive is corrupt or about to go bye-bye.
3) (SATA drives only) SATA operation is set to AHCI mode and you're trying to install Windows XP without slipstreaming AHCI drivers or pressing F6 to preload them from a floppy (yes, you read correctly: a floppy).

Solutions:
1) Don't do this. Clean installs are best, but if you want to live dangerously, do a repair-install after moving your drive to a new motherboard or hard drive controller. During the repair, the correct hard drive controller drivers will be loaded.
2) Back up your data. Now. Get a new hard drive and reinstall Windows XP on it.
3) I've seen this A LOT with installs of XP on newer Dells. Either:

3a) Download the AHCI drivers from Dell's site and save them to a floppy disk. If your computer doesn't have a floppy drive, you'll need to get a USB floppy drive. Boot from your XP CD and when asked to press F6, do so. Press "S" to specify drivers and your floppy will be searched automatically. Load and go!
3b) Slipstream the AHCI drivers into your XP source. This involves copying your XP disc to your hard drive as well as the drivers from Dell's site. Either Google around for instructions on how to slipstream or use a utility like NLITE to do the deed.
or
3c) Avoid the whole mess and switch the SATA mode to IDE/Legacy/whatever in the BIOS. Install XP. No need for F6 or slipstreaming.what is a boot mgr. or a boot drive? The boot drive is the drive that contains the OS (your Windows Folder). A Boot Manager is a utility needed when more than one OS is installed. When your system first boots the Boot Manager will offer you a choice of OS's and then either load the one you select or start the Boot Loader, which will in turn "start" the OS.I'm going to give up on my quest to repair this computer. I want to thank everyone who has tried to assist me in my effort, but I have to concede that I am not as smart or understanding of computers as I thought.
Thank everyone again!I believe the Dell Recovery partition located on the hard drive is interferring with the installation. I bought a used hard drive and had to delete it with 3rd party tools (Parted Magic will work). Of course, I was not installing the hard drive to a Dell, or even the same computer it was removed from.

Solve : Facebook account disabled?

Answer»

Yeah so, had facebook account, didn't use any apps with it, didn't abuse it, went on it every couple of days or so, now its disabled. I read stories from other users that had this ISSUE so I've considered 2 options: Forget about my account and never use it again nor make ANOTHER one AND wait to get REACTIVATED (in case it's a temp disable) fix up my account so it looks nice and then abandon it and use another site like myspace to chat with my friends and family. Either way I don't really like the FACT that facebook randomly disabled me nor am I even going to bother sending an email considering what that has accomplished with other users. Done with facebook. Theirs no use actively using a site if there's a possibility of getting kicked out of it for logging on.Ok? So what is the problem? If you want to try another social networking site, try myspace. Solve : printing multiple pdf files?

Answer»

Hi all I work retail and am required to do OPAL quizes. At end we are given certificates online. They are in PDF FORM
My question is can you copy and print several pdf forms? I have XP Home and had to search just to find NOTEPAD. THEN it wouldn't print it for me. I have sometimes many to do so I don't WANT to have to waste ink doing each seprately.
Option I used was to go to main window where it says completed and just print that out. I can go to work computer and print there and use their ink---after all it is for work. It does not print the certificate itself.
I am not a newbie at computers, but neither am I very experienced either......but I would think there is a way to do this?
I just like learning to do things on the computer so this is a puzzle to me. lol
Any help would be appreciated....not terribly important but would like to know Quote from: SUSANNE on February 21, 2010, 06:07:24 AM

So, you want to combine several PDFs into one file for printing, right? How would that save ink? It doesn't make sense. For example, if you merged 3 equally-sized PDFs into one file, that file would simply be 3 times larger than the individual PDFs. So, agian, how would that save ink?

Also, what does Notepad have to do with this? If you were trying to copy and paste from a PDF to Notepad, then, no, that probably won't work. Notepad is just too simple a text editor to deal with content from a PDF.

Solve : 0x0000007E?

Hi I am running WINDOWS xp home, my COMPUTER was on, but not being used when it just popped to a blue screen. says "stop; 0x0000007E (0xc000001D, 0x80537008, 0xBA4C33B8, 0xBA4C30B4)" no mater what option I choose it ALLWAYS comes back to this screen. I have 2 SATA drives on a raid card. I disabled the raid card and tried each drive alone, no change. I turned off the SATA drives and installed an IDE drive, this drive did not get the blue screen, but just continually reboots. I did bios diagnostics on "wont BOOT OS" and "Blue Screen" both took about 3 days and system passed all TESTS, I don't know what to do from here. HELPWhat was new before this started (new hew, sw, driver, error, virus, etc)?

Can you boot to safe mode? If so, update all drivers. Also look for a bios updatenothing new, and wont boot in safe mode during safe mode boot stops at mup.sys

Solve : Install XP from MS-DOS.?

Answer» You can install windows XP from an older version of MS-DOS.

This has nothing to do with an upgrade. We are talking about a situation where a computer has MS-DOS on it, or you can put MS-DOS on it, but you are not able to install Windows XP. Some COMPUTERS and some CDs and DVDs are just not compatible. Let's not TALK about why, let's talk about the workaround.
The workaround is to do the installation from MS-DOS and not even try to boot the CD or DVD.

First of all, this link explains the normal procedure for installing Windows.Install, reinstall, or uninstall Windows

But of course, you likely already know all about that. Here is one article that has been overlooked and explains how to do their windows XP installation from MS-DOS. Actually, this dates back to Windows NT.
How to start the Setup program from MS-DOS in Windows XP

Title may be MISLEADING. You're actually start the installation inside of MS-DOS. Which means you have to have an MS-DOS partition on your hard drive and it has to be large enough to copy the temporary FILES needed by Windows to do the install. A variation of this is to use another computer to help you copy the installation disk onto a partition that can be read by MS-DOS. MS-DOS by itself takes up little room on a hard drive and is quite easy to install. You don't even need the full installation of DOS, just the basic things to move files and start a process. But the key thing is to have a file called Smart drive.
I have done this recently, and I realized that this is the way to solve those TOUGH problems when you have an old PC that just doesn't act right with the CD-ROM or DVD drive.

Let me know if this is any help.

Solve : Purchasing a new computer---any suggestions??

Answer»

Hello all. Love this forum I stumbled on. Its great for guys like me.

I am wanting to purchase a computer for my wife. I use my laptop for work and she is constantly grabbing it when she can to get on the internet and things. She does a lot of PHOTO editing and uses a program called CS3. She does a lot of photoype editing and things.

I want to suprise her with a computer of her own, but don't really know what route to go or anything......laptop vs desktop, brand, build vs PACKAGE ETC. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. I reviewed the buying tips and they helped some, but such a novice I am overwhelmed with all the info I come across.

I'd like to get her a laptop so she can be on the move, something that can handle photo editing, wireless for the internet, and something that wont break the bank.........

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should be looking for??? Any suggestions on mimimum things I should consider as far as RAM etc? Thanks for any info and I appreciate the time. Have a good one!Budget ? ?

Actually, I think you have plenty to choose from. newegg.com has 106 models in the $500 - $750 price range. I'm not familiar with CS3 but, based on what I see at Adobe - Adobe Creative Suite 3 Master Collection : System requirements , any of those on the newegg.com list will run it.

Get at least 2GB of RAM, but many of the models in the list mentioned above have 3 or 4 GB. You won't find anything nowadays with less than 2GB. You can easily find models priced at $600 or less with 3 or 4GB.

If you prepare a brick-and-mortar retailer, visit Staples, BestBuy, Office Depot, etc.

I've had great luck with Dell. First they can build you a computer, to fit your needs.

You can also purchase an extended warranty.

Most important is the support, I have found them to be excellent. If you not into trouble shooting and fixing your own problems.

I will SECOND that. Us mortals at home get virtually no support, that's why we have to come to
CHF for help.If you're willing to go up to $800, I saw a great deal at CostCo the other day. I can't remember all of the details, but it was an HP with Windows 7, 4 GB RAM, 320 GB hard drive, a fairly decent graphics card, and a good processing speed. It also came with a very nice all-in-one HP printer. If I had the extra $800 lying around, I would definitely snatch it up. If you have a CostCo in your area and a membership (or know someone who does), it's worth looking into. From what I can tell, it seems to only be offered in stores; I can't find it on their web site.

As for CS3...most of the programs in this suite will run on just about any new computer currently available. My desktop is a couple of years old and it never gives me any trouble.

Solve : Learning Programming or Being Programmed???

Answer»

The recent topics on the Programming board really hurt me. People just want their code working, don't care to learn something from it. They don't care what the error was, whether logical or syntax. They just want the code running. A person trying to learn functions doesn't know much about DATA types. Can these people yield anything useful? I believe that one shouldn't re-invent the wheel for just a MINOR issue, especially if they're just asking about their errors. These issues are addressed by just READING over the code once.

Just roughly wrote what came onto my mind looking at the Programming board. Would like to GET more opinions on this. Quote from: TheUnixGuy on February 23, 2010, 02:19:30 AM

Solve : Strange Wireless issues?

Quote from: patio on February 21, 2010, 10:08:52 AM

Check your Router manual...
Set it up properly as a SECURE connection...
Then set up the network connection properly on all machines...
And how does that solve my problem with the actual wireless switch on my LAPTOP (the one that sometimes sees my router as a secure point)?

On a side note, the router hasn't been shown as "secure" since Monday, when I restarted my router. It doesn't neccessarily solve the issue...
However it keeps us from running around in circles with too many variables.Quote from: patio on February 21, 2010, 03:18:36 PM

Hey, PARDON me for butting in here...trying to help you get some responses/aid...

ACTUALLY, folks everywhere will need LOTS MORE INFO before they can even begin to try and help you with your issue.

- OS
- Video Card make/model
- Current screen resolution settings
- Monitor make/models
- More SPECIFIC details as to EXACTLY what is happening
- Possibly what type of connector between pc/video card and the monitors
- And if you can, a screenshot of the problem - a picture is priceless

Without details like the above, it's like you have a headache, then go to the doctor and asking them what's wrong with you without providing any further info...

Just a well-intentioned tip.

cheers and good luck,
