Solve : Speed best for download torrents more then 1GB?

Answer»

Dear Users
What is the best speed download for torrents files
ThanksUhh
I'd say as fast as possible...

Maybe you should try rephrasing your question...I don't think, you can help it here. Torrents are slow, and it's the way, they are.
The best speed for files over 1GB is: OVERNIGHT....just kidding.I do hope that was a joke Broni.
The factors that INFLUENCE the download speed of a torrent is, the speed of the connection, the configuration of the bittorrent client and the amount of people seeding the file(s). But to say that torrents are inherently slow is just false.
I've just downloaded the Ubuntu 7.04 DVD (~4gb). That took me about 3 hours... Don't think that's particularly slow.

That's about right...
When I SAID slow, I meant, they are usually slower, then regular downloads.
On a funny note...I REALLY wanted one particular foreign movie, and it took me 7 days to get it (I had only 1, sometimes 2 seeders)...LOLQuote from: Broni on October 09, 2007, 04:22:15 PM

That could be why...

When I have a torrent with pretty good health I can get downloads up to 500+ kb/s. Lots faster than anything else (aside from newsgroups) that I download. Are you my neighbor? I live in Daly City...

i leave my torrents RUNNING overnight next day they are done haha and if you want your torrent downloading faster do some reserch or ask around about port fowarding that may help if you use a router.gamemar
Excellent info. Thank you.
I went to portforward.com, and it was a breeze Quote from: Broni on October 09, 2007, 08:12:16 PM

Solve : Building a computer case...?

Answer»

i plan to build my own computer case soon, as i cannot find one online that meets my requirements. i was planning on building what WOULD appear to be an overgrown desktop case, similar to the style of GX MANS dell, 'cept big enough to fit that dell inside. the dimensions will be no larger than

24 x 22 x 18.5
width depth height
in inches

the motherboard will lay flat in the bottom of the case, i plan to use a coolit thermoelectric CPU cooler, and a standard water cooler for the GPU and chipset. the hard drive(s) will be air cooled, with filters, of course, the PSU will not he filtered, for the simple fact that the fans that are supplied in them do not have enough power to hardly spin, let alone pull air through a filter. i plan to mount a cheap LCD MONITOR into the front panel, no larger than a 17", whatever i can ebay.

so, knowing this little bit of info, does anyone have any suggestions as to what to build it out of? i was thinking half inch square steel tubing, with brushed aluminum panels, even though thats overkill for a frame.

wow, that's an intense case. What's it for?
If I were making my own case, I suppose I would just buy some sheet metal and weld it together to make the box. hmmm. diamond plating might look cool.
Just make sure your motherboard doesn't come in contact with the sheet metal. its for my gaming rig, just replaced the motherboard in it, but i have to get a splitter for the power supply, four pin to eight pin. its to give me room for expansion, and, as theft protection, i doubt someone is going to steal somethin that weighs 100+ lbs. when i upgrade to a C2D 6750 soon, im getting two gigs of ddr2 800 to replace the one gig of ddr2 667 i have, i only have a 7600GT for a GPU at the moment, its does great for me. Oh, i was thinking of painting it a high gloss midnight blue, and putting a half-life LOGO on the window. it'll match the inspiron im getting next month.Sounds like fun. Did you say you were going to mount a LCD panel directly onto the case? If so, the 1/2" steel tubing frame would be a smart idea. And if you weren't using weight as a theft security , i would say 1/2" alum. tubing would be just as durable. Speaking of aluminum, can you TIG weld? Anyways sounds like fun and I actually had the same idea, i'm just lazy. Yeah, i plan to mount an LCD monitor into the front of the case. so it will look like an overgrown oscilloscope or somethin maybe. I'll probably take a trip to the local junkyard and get a used tranny cooler radiator for a GPU and north bridge radiator, just have to flush the tranny fluid out of it, and make sure it doesnt leak. i can get it for next to nothing if i can find one. oh, my temporary computer case untill i get this THING built will be this:

Yes, i actually built that, though its no where near done, i plan to modd a window and a couple vents into it. i still have to do some dressing to the case to make it look nice. i may end up just using that case for my computer case if i can make it suite my needs. theres more than enough room to fit a tranny cooler radiator in there, i could even fit a water pump out of a car in there if i wanted to go overkill on the coolant pump, but i wont. i'll make a jpeg diagram of the coolant system i plan to setup
heres the layout of the case:

i will cut a hole in the motherboard pan and side panel to accommodate the radiator, some mesh will be installed to cover the panel hole. i am also putting a door on the side to allow access to the CD drive from the right panel, so i do not have to remove it and the door that hinges off of it to properly mount a CD drive, and of course, i'll install venting for the hard drive(s) in the panel. if all goes well, this may end up being my computer case, and i will still figure out a way to put an LCD panel in it.

Solve : Microsoft Technical Support?

Answer»

is there any way to talk to a microsoft representative if you have troubles or questions without paying their stupid fees?

i looked around for a while and it kept leading me to a page where i have to pay after 90 days or something, and it wasnt cheap either. They won't talk to you for free... yeah thats unfortunate. i really think they should just like nvidia or intel technical support. they were really helpful when i had issues with my stuff or just had a general question. it would make me think higher of them. Our fee structure here at CH is alot more reasonable...we kinda take pride in that.Maybe M$ should hire us as subcontractors....
EH, it won't happen...Bill is too tight...LOLlolQuote from: deadringer on October 12, 2007, 06:29:53 PM

So, before 90 days have passed on your product, you could get free support, right? I believe they do provide free support for a limited time, depending on the product, although there may be a limit on number of calls. At least, I'm sure that's the way it used to work. Yes.i think thats still really lame though, because problems can come up anytime"lame", no, I disagree. Sure, "problems can come up anytime", but you can't expect to get ENDLESS free support on a product. Just because it's software makes it no different from many non-computer consumer products. Do you think you can buy a NEW CAR and expect to get free parts and labor on components covered under warranty AFTER the warranty period has expired? Nope, that's just not reality.

The same thing applies to a new vacuum sweeper or hundreds of other products? You simply can't expect the manufacturer to provide endless support. If they did, we'd all have to pay more for products to cover the cost of providing this free continued technical support.Well, many software makers provide endless on line support (email).
M$ has been always cheap to me, and ignorant.
IMHOwell i guess im comparing M$ with other companies like nvidia or intel that provide support (email) for free. if something comes up i would personally expect to at least be able to get free support via email. i think even EA has free email support for their products.

yeah ur right about other consumer products that dont provide support after warranty, but when i compare M$ with other computer software or hardware products, i honestly feel that they come up way short in terms of customer service.

Solve : Desktop Shortcut Icons?

Answer»

Hi
I'm TRYING to solve a problem for a local playgroup but it's got me baffled.
Windows XP Pro - Whenever the kids go on the COMPUTER the shortcut icons on the desktop keep copying themselves. It seems that they are moving them SLIGHTLY when clicking on them to start and this is creating a copy. By the end of the day we can have 7 or 8 COPIES of evrything on the desktop. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I've heard about this problem before, but I can't recall what was the solution...

Solve : A bittersweet moment..?

Answer»

Well, theres good news, and bad news on the rebuild of my "new" computer.. Good news is, teh MSI P6N SLI motherboard i ordered isnt dead, and, the CPU is running at 86F. Bad news is.. My old motherboard, Foxconn NF4SLI7AA seems to have taken my nvidia geforce 7600GT KO with it.

To be on the positive sign, theres still plenty of hope for my rig. however, i will need another video card, because, no matter how happy i am about the board finally booting, the nvidia MX4000 64mb PCI video card SIMPLY isnt going to cut it. Oh, on a side NOTE, all i get out of the 7600 is a scrambled video feed from both monitors i have tried it on, both WORK fine with the MX4000, so my guess is that the 7600 got killed with the north bridge of the foxconn board somehow.
Well, so much for being positive, i cannot get my new board to post half of the time, the lil LED indicator that came with the board says that its hanging at booting the CPU, according to the booklet. Oh, and its enabling hyper threading for my pentium D 805 smithfield, hyper threading is a single core CPU emulating a dual core CPU, the pentium D is dual core. I think this is the problem, however i am unsure. Anyone think flashing the bios from v2.1 to v2.3 would help?

EDIT:

forgot to mention, i contacted MSI's TECHNICAL support earlier, they where no help, but at least they tried to help, and responded quickly, i may continue to buy there products if this RMA goes through well enough, because, at least i know i can RELY on them to replace the things they screw up on

Solve : Resolved: windows jumping around while scrolling?

Answer»

My husband just reinstalled XP on his computer after it crashed and now every time he has a window open and scrolls, the window jumps all over the screen. He very seldom has windows maximized so it has become quite a problem.Hmm

I'm not sure if this will solve the issue or not, but LETS try anyways:
Go to Start> Control Panel> (to the left menu, click Display All)> then find Mouse

Click the Wheel tab. Try lowing the number of lines skipped per scroll to 3. If the problem continues (or if its ALREADY set to 3) then it may be a problem with your mouse software. If this is the case, then you should update the driver.
What sort of mouse is this? USB or PS/2 (standard)?
What brand of mouse is it?
Do you KNOW of any special software designed for it? Thanks so much for the help ZYLSTRA. The lines per scroll was already set at 3 so he went online to update the mouse driver. The problem was actually the VIDEO driver which he hadn't updated yet. All is well now and he's a happy camper again!Okay

If the problem occurs again, feel free to start a new topic and we will be glad to help you

Solve : Which site allows largest uploads??

Answer»

Sometimes you need to upload bigger file for your FRIEND to pick it up.
What do you use?
I use http://www.gigasize.com, which allows 300MB upload, 600MB after free REGISTRATION. Files stay there for 90 days.
Just curious...do you KNOW anything better?Well, Live Folders allows 50MB upload per file (1GB of storage total)

Its great for Forum type stuff, and sharing certain files with friends/family/everyone
It has permission groups (public, personal, contacts*)

All that is required of you is a Windows Live ID (Passport, or Hotmail account)
For permission groups, contacts that you allow must have a Live ID as well. Public files (ones that anyone can access) does not require any such account.
* You can select which contacts are allowed
I don't want to be MISUNDERSTOOD. When I said 600MB, this is what I can upload in one SESSION.

Solve : Computer Stolen--What Do Next??????

Answer»

My HP desktop computer recently got stolen.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I should do next?
Even when filing a police report, I understand that I will more than likely not be able to retrieve my computer. However, I did have personal information as well as possibly credit information. Is this a case of possible identity theft?

Does anyone have any recommendations on where I could find some information on the next steps I should take (like a website)?

Any help will be appreciated. If your computer was stolen...and has not been recovered...hopefuly you have some idea what personal information was on it.

Having it stolen...yes...now there is a high probability of identity theft.

Here's a good read.Do you know the ip address of your old computer ?? I'm curios Spero-T.. what exactly would knowing the IP the computer used to have accomplish?Correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't the IP change if you plug it into another router?

Also, even if you knew the IP, how would you locate it?
There are programs that can do that but they are very expensive.WAN IPs are ISP and connection based.
If I hook my computer directly up to my modem, it will be assigned my WAN IP. This is the IP other computers need to know in order to communicate with me. (If you got a router the WAN IP is usually assigned to the router.) If I then took my computer to a mate's place and hooked it up to his modem, it would be assigned his WAN IP, not mine.Sorry deerpark... I throught the ip was SPECIFIC to each pc meaning we could trace it, using a war dailer i beleive it is called.Actually, the mac address is the thing that stays the same, and even that can be spoofed.
There's probably some programs on sourceforge.net that can search networks by mac address, but it would take forever on the internet. And if it is behind a firewall, there's even less hope.
I wonder if there are any programs on it that MIGHT give clues for its whereabouts?btw...
The only definition of war dialer I know is to configure a computer with a dialup modem to automatically call a range of telephone numbers listening for another modem. This method was used by hackers in the pre WWW ERA to find systems to "explore".
The closest modern equivalent would probably be wifi wardriving.Aaaa ok fair enough, looked into a bit when i was a kid i just remeber that.... thanks Quote from: Spero-T on October 05, 2007, 09:21:50 AM

looked into a bit when i was a kid

You mean you're not one now? Although kittykat appears to have gone missing this is what you should do in this situation:
Notify all Credit Card co.s what has transpired. Request the accounts be closed and new ones created.
Same as above with bank accounts, Department Store accounts etc.
File a report with the State also...similar to the local Police report.

This should be done immediately.

And Travel Here...Thank you all for your help and your suggestions.

I really appreciate it. You're welcome...and good luck!Yes, to put it bluntly, you are probably, and most likely, quite literally, screwed. i doubt someones going to steal an HP now-a-days without wanting steal the identity of the owner. my advice to you is, when you get your new computer, burn all the info to CD's, and put them in a lock box, next, find a very STURDY stud in the wall of your home, and mount that box to it, that, or mount it to a concrete floor. the noise it would take to remove it would surely ATTRACT attention. also, cancel any credit cards that may have been stored on it, its a hassle, but its better than finding a $100,000 house boat on the card

- I am receiving the following error message when I try to start my son's computer. PXE-E61 Media Test Failure check cable.
Needless to say I checked all cables but to now avail. I went into bios and the computer doesn't recognize the hard drive. I put in a new hard drive but still no good.

- PXE seems to refer to a pc that is trying to boot from the Network...
Can you go into the BIOS and disable Boot from LAN or Network ??

- I disable the lan boot w/no pxe support in the bios and put in a new hard drive 30 gig and it is great now.
I believe the hard drive went bad and it then tried to load an os from a previous network, which caused the PXE error. The true culprit was the bad hard drive.

Solve : Upload folder is full?

Answer»

Hello.
I'm pretty new to this board, and its settings, so I have a question.
When I try to upload something into my post, it says: "Upload folder is full".
I didn't upload anything yet, so how come it's full. Or is it some board limitation?
ThanksI think it could be the upload folder as opposed to your upload folder.
Just a guess mind you.Oh, I see...THANK you Ah, thanks for reminding me, Broni! I had noticed this the other day and I've been meaning to bring it to the admin's attention, but it completely slipped my mind. There's only so much space allocated for uploads, so every once in awhile, a bit of maintenance is required. This may have already been taken care of, as I've SEEN a few new ATTACHMENTS, but I can't say for sure. Try uploading your file again and if you still get the error, we'll contact the admin so he can REMOVE some old files and clear up a bit of space.Quote

This may have already been taken care of
Someone did something, because it worked fine very next day after my post...Thanks.

Solve : Wii or DS??

Answer»

Hiya
I seen the NEW my SIMS GAME and it LOOKS good but i don't know which console to get it on the nintendo Wii or the DS. Which one do you think is better and why?
EmilieMy brother has SIMS for the DS. He wanted it so badly because the ads said it was very good and everything but when we got it, we were both disappointed because we didn't find it as FUN as it said it would be.

That's just us, you might think differently of it. Personally, I think the Wii would be more fun.If you like to play games while you are on the move, then Nintendo DS is the way to go.

Solve : DriverMax 3?

Answer» http://www.download.com/DriverMax/3000-2098_4-10572602.html?tag=nl.e415&pid=10747622

Publisher's description of DriverMax

DriverMax helps you backup all the drivers installed on your Windows computer. When needed you will be able to reinstall all your drivers or just the ones you choose in a single STEP that takes less than a minute; a very handy tool especially after reinstalling Windows or when the hardware driver CDs which came with your computer are no longer available. DriverMax also helps you check if you have the latest versions of drivers and displays detailed information about all drivers. No more searching for rare drivers on disks or having to track them down on the Internet or inserting one installation CD after the other. Simply export all your current drivers (or just the ones that you want) to a folder or a compressed file. After reinstalling Windows you will have everything in one place.

Version 3 is a completely new release which features Windows Vista rating tools, hardware identification tools and the background of a powerful hardware information database.

Editor's review of DriverMax

Behind a slick interface, this program backs up all your PC's drivers in case you mess up something fierce. From registration to implementation, DriverMax works fast, runs smooth, and does even more than mere backing up.

When you run the app, it asks you if you'd like to run the trial version or apply for a registration key. The key is free, though, requiring only an e-mail address and your name. Once you've entered the key, the program interface appears, with slick button navigation: Driver Operations, Updates and Identification, and Popular Hardware. Mousing over one reveals more choices, so you can export your drivers, import drivers, or view an installed drivers report.

Updates lets you update both the DriverMax software and the drivers themselves, although as of this writing there is a warning label on the DriverMax Web site that downloads are not currently functioning. The program can also identify unknown hardware and point you in the direction of popular hardware options, pointing users to a compilation of statistics about different video cards and processors.

The strongest features, though, relate to driver backup and reinstalls. They function smoothly, offering users the option to back up all drivers or compile a customized list. Reinstalling an "accidentally" deleted driver was as pain-free as COULD be. This is a great utility tool that should APPEAL to newbies, advanced HACKERS, and everybody in between.

I just tried it....works very nicely Nice find !
I'll be testing it on the testbench machine later and see if it will run on a few other platforms as it says XP/Vista...

ok first of all ill tell u the specs

7200gs gigabyte geforce 256mb graphics card
2 gigs of ddr2 corsair ram
320gig western digital harddrive
asus lightscribe dvd cd writer

ok i installed EVERYTHING and it was working a treat then I left it downloading while i was at school when i came back I found that my cpu fan was not spinning, from that point i paniced and turned of my pc

but after turning the pc back on the fan turned on then went off then i went into a game and it went back on so is this some normal power saving thing ?

also when i got the guy from the pc shop to install the processor [i didnt trust myself]
he didnt apply coolent paste [is that safe he didnt look profeshinal]

and 1 last thing I went to put in a ps2 keyboard and when it was in my mouse stoped moving and my mouse is usb then i reset the pc and then it was like my pc reset. The icons on the desktop were gone, it had the ORIGINAL background, and my intenet setting were all defult??? any help

thanks if you read this and sorry about the bad english and spelling Arctic Silver's Site has excellent instructions on applying Thermal Compound...

Running without it will fry your CPU and POSSIBLY damage other components as well.

You should also never plug in or remove a PS2 device while the machine is on...hopefully after a few COLD boots with the device unplugged it will recover. Then power down hook it up and power up again.

As to the repair guy i would find someone else in your area...he doesn't need to risk damaging any more equipment.

Thanks Guys

Chris

Oh by the way I just looked and a few of you might remember a while back i posted about my Micros SD Card with some weird folders and FILES on it. Anyway its all fixed now, and I was sure I posted a reply to let you all know that it was sorted, but I just checked and it turns out I didn't, so sorry for that.
But basically i use it as my memory stick to transport all my work to and from school. One day I was doing my COURSEWORK and my mate unplugged my PC, so when I rebooted it, it did that Scandisk (you know the one with the blue background and white text when you don't shut down your PC properly.) Anyway when doing that it deleted the folders for me saying they were invalid or something.
Anyway I've ATTACHED the log for you so you can see for yourself and maybe it will help someone else who has a similar problem.

Just wondering, is there a way to plug my USB Devices into my router, such as my measly 256mb memory stick or my H320 (20 Gig music player) or even my iPod? Ive been Googling USB to Rj45 but all I get is RJ45 to USB converters. Wrong way round. Router is a Netgear DG834G with 3 spare RJ45 ports.
Thanks Guys
Nope I'm pretty sure this can't be done. Even if you could find a USB to RJ45 converter, your USB devices aren't designed to handle being connected to a router.
If you want to share USB devices over a network you need a Network USB hub or a NAS with USB ports.Ok cheers bud,
That makes everything alot clearer.
Ill have a look into them
Thanks

Solve : Magenta hue?

Answer»

Hello!

For a few days my monitor's display is covered with magenta hue. Sometimes it goes after awhile, sometimes it stays all the time driving me crazy. Does anybody know what's going on?
(I'm using Windows XP Home Edition).
Thank you. It's probably a problem with your monitor.
What kind of monitor do you have? How old is it?
Check the color settings on the monitor and also try resetting it from the menu.
If the settings look FINE, and if you have an older monitor, it may just be time to buy a new one.
If its new and under warranty, take it back.
I don't know if this will help or not, but I once got a yellowish hue on my monitor, turned out that it was a problem with the monitor cable. It was kinked, I straightened it out and it was fine. Quote from: DarkMSTie on October 18, 2007, 12:51:11 PM

hmmm... I was thinking, "check the cables", and I EVEN thought I typed it out. I guess not. Thanks DarkMSTie, for mentioning it.

I didn't FIND any problem with the cable. It wasn't kinked, and I never touch it.
By the WAY, now, after a few hours, I turned the computer on again and everything is OK.
Thanks for your suggestion. I may use it in the future.Quote from: michaewlewis on October 18, 2007, 12:48:49 PM

I have a Samtron 77V monitor. It's not so old - more less 5 years, and except the problem I mentioned it works perfectly. However I THINK that you may be right about it. When I (following your suggestion) pushed the menu button, I found out it's not working.
It will be the the monitor problem.

Solve : Post Topic Images...?

Answer»

I haven't tried it with Firefox...

I'll give it a go, now...Just tried FF...and the image that is missing doesn't show up at all. So, with FF...either the image is there...or it's not.

With IE7...the image is there...or you'll see the red "x" denoting a missing image.

Update...

I made mention that it may be a PROBLEM with the index.template.php file associated with the Theme, but I think I may be mistaken.

Maybe all that has to be done is the uploading of the correct gif image to the images directory of that theme...or to rename the missing gif file from .gif to xx.gif.I'm aware of the issue, have briefely looked in the code where the issue is happening but was unable to figure it out. It's STRANGE because most of the time it works, but sometimes it doesn't?

What is that image for, anyway?

Huh. You make a good point. I guess that image really isn't needed. I believe it's there because this template is copying the old YaBB forum setup and I think that was used in YaBB. I guess I could just remove the section of code that is used to display the image and that would solve things and probably even make things load even faster. After some further investigation I believe that this was caused by me when I removed the message icon option in the post section of the messages. I never really liked the idea of message icons and I think it makes things appear more simpler to the user when they don't have the option to change the message icon and when a bunch of extra icons are not seen.

Sorry for not fixing this sooner, I've always NOTICED the issue because it's reported a lot in the forum error logs. But never really thought that much of it since Firefox just doesn't display bad icons. Really could see how this would be annoying in IE since you'd be getting the red x's.

In any case I removed the line that displays the message icons in the message display LIST. That should fix things. Thanks for the fix, Nathan...looks much better now.Cool Quote from: patio on June 01, 2008, 09:10:25 AM

Well, things have definitely changed. US broadband penetration broke 80% among active Internet users for the first time in FEBRUARY. I started using DSL in Jan 2002. Prior to that, I used dialup. Now, when I visit my mother and use her dialup connection, I don't have the patience to stay online very long; it's just too slow.

Solve : Your ISP may try to hijack your browser (+solution)?

Answer»

I found pretty interesting post at:
http://windowsbbs.com/search.php?searchid=233814

Quote

I wrote this up after solving this issue on my home network. It's good to know about because my ISP (COX) is not the only ISP doing this now, and OTHERS will soon follow suit once they learn how much money they can make from it. The write up is below:
*****************************************

As you know, you can search DIRECTLY from the address bar in modern Web browsers. This functionality is built into the browser and is configurable via menus, preferences (options) or toolbar buttons. Some browsers let you select your search engine of choice to use for adress bar searching.

Many ISPs are now attempting to rake in a few extra dollars by using DNS redirects to "hijack" your address bar searches and feed the browser a dynamically created results page filled with sponsored advertisements that "match" what you are searching for.

What is DNS?

DNS = Domain Name Server. Think of this as the white-yellow pages for the Internet. All ISPs have their own DNS. When you type a Web site name (www.yahoo.com) into the browser address bar, the browser sends this info out to the Internet. This name is converted to an ip address that matches the name. The list of "who is who" is stored in the ISP's DNS and when the match for the name is found the request for the Web document is sent out onto the Internet to the correct address (numerical ip address).

If you have a home network with a router, or if you connect directly to the modem, the DNS addresses your network (and Web browser) will use are setup AUTOMATICALLY by the router or by Windows operating system. These addresses to be used are sent by the ISP via the cable/dsl modem.

Typing a name or word(s) without the .COM, .NET, ,ORG at the end will automatically invoke the browser's built in search function which is supposed to then display a page of results using your preferred search engine.

ISPs know how this works, and some are now configuring their DNS to handle names and word(s) without the .COM, .NET, .ORG, etc. in a special manner. They are calling these types of queries "FAILED DNS QUERIES".

That is entirely marketing hype. A failed query is a legit term used in comp networking, but these ISPs are applying the term for marketing purposes.

COX Internet is "testing" the use of DNS redirects and this breaks the browser's ABILITY to search from the address bar. Thery are currently testing in the following zones:

Arizona, Gulf Coast, Hampton Roads, Kansas, Las Vegas, Macon, New Orleans, Northern Virginia, Orange County, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Palos Verdes, Roanoke, Sun Valley, and Tulsa area

Fortunately, they are giving subscribers the opportunity to OPT-OUT and they provide instructions for changing the DNS used by your network and computers:
http://support.cox.com/sdccommon/asp...9-8d2e18ceb58d

Note:
If you have a network with a router and ALL computers on the network have static ip addresses, then all you need to do is change the DNS in the router. If your computers use DHCP then you need to manually SET the DNS for each computer on the network.

Note2:
You DO NOT even have to use your ISP's DNS. You can use DNS from other ISPs or other DNS providers. Your ISPs DNS is usually the most reliable though.

Solve : FAQ section?

Answer»

Since the forum change back in March the FAQ section has been in LIMBO while I try to COME up with a better solution. I've received a few PM's from users who've wanted to submit a new FAQ; however, because of the lock down to prevent users from asking questions in the section it's made it impossible.

To help create a solution of some TYPE I've created a new board under the FAQ section entitled: "Post new FAQ", which is open to all users to create new FAQ's or talk about them. Once created the MODERATORS or I can then move the FAQ into the appropriate category.

I hope this will help resolve some of the issues and maybe spur some additional content for the FAQ's. In addition because the Wiki Forum template didn't work as I was hoping I've re-added the description of each of the forum categories to describe what they contain.

I think this is a great idea, but I think we can abandon the Wiki template, since it doesn't seem to be a great solution, and I think it will take to long to perfectly implement.

- txt

In Firefox, right click anywhere on page, click "Save Page As", and you have 2 options:
- HTML
- txtis there a way though to type a page you want to save as mhtml because I can't view every webpage offline. So I can't save the ones I want to when I can't get on the internet. So there MUST be a way to do what I am talking about.Quote

is there a way though to type a page
I don't quiet understand....is there a way to type a page I want to save and then save it?I am asking this because I can't view every page offline.I want to be able to though.I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by "type a page".... MHTML is a Microsoft Hypertext format, that holds the entire webpage in one file (images, etc) like a Word file.

Though convenient in some cases, it is overkill. I would just save in the HTML format, since its more universal (some web-browsers have problems with MHTML)

Click File> Save> and click Save
I would not change the filename...

Images and any other needed information (eg: CSS documents, settings) will be saved in a separate folder.

If this solution does not WORK, please describe exactly why its not working. thanks for telling me.I meant something else but that is okay because it is propubly impossable to do.

Solve : Degaussing my monitor?

Answer» When my 10 year old held a powerful egg shaped magnet to the 2000 Dell 16" monitor there APPEARED three halos of color red green and gray. There is a knob on the outside that resembles waves of energy intersecting and it pushes in and sticks and/or unsticks in an out position, BUT it doesn't seem to clear up the screen's distortions.
How can I clean up my kid's mess?
Sincerely,
Grampa Graskrl
Get the magnet back from your kid and use it to reverse it. It can be KIND of tricky, but try to imagine you are directing an orchestra.
Start from a distance and move the magnet around at that distance to WATCH the colors go back and forth. Once you get a feel for what the magnet is doing, get a little closer and try to work the colors back out of the screen. Push the colors away with the magnet.

After you get the colors worked out, throw the monitor away and get an LCD. They aren't affected by magnets. Where I'm from you can usually borrow/rent a degausser from stores that sells TVs... I'd find a store that has one.A few methods are avaliable here:

Or, go to ebay.com, click on Community at top of the page, and post a question in Discussion Boards or the Answer Center. I TRIED THE EBAY ROUTE, NO LUCK, I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO LOAD THE PHOTOS TO A FOR SALE BY OWNER WEBSITE. I CAN EMAIL PHOTOS BUT IT DON'T KNOW HOW TO MOVE THEM TO A WEBSITE.First of all, please turn of your caps lock. Writing in all capital letters on a forum is the text equivalent of SHOUTING.

Second of all, as Soybean also MENTIONS, Ebay got a pretty extensive guide on adding pictures to a sale.
http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/photo_tutorial3.html
Give the link above a read and if you run into problems don't hesitate to ask. But please explain in details where in the process you get stuck.

If you need help with any other sites we will probably need to know which ones, since there is no generic way of adding pictures to a site.Im confused Have you try GETTING to the web first Like Image shack ? Sorry about the caps. I am new to this. I am trying to get 1 photo to fsbon.com and with no success. Can you help? thank youOkay I can't guide you through the process since I cant create a listing without paying.
But from what I've been able to read on their site, you should be able to upload a picture from your hard drive to the site. Is the picture you want to use CURRENTLY on your hard drive?

But maybe the best THING to do is to contact FSBON... I assume you've paid for the listing so you should be entitled a little help.

they download as an exe file to my C:/document/then the game. I tried to move them to another area but it does the same thing.

I have been into the hotkeys and took out EVERYTHING. I don't have a problem with some other games.

I even went to another site and tried to download delicious2.OK....So, you download, and install all other games with no problem, but just this one won't GO, correct?

Solve : Speed of Windows?

Quote from: Richenstony on October 01, 2007, 06:10:23 AM

Windows x-p is a brilliant os , however .... the speed all depends on the upgrades you make prior to installing x-p ..... for example ...... if i had 1 gb of ram ..... and my buddy had 2gbs he will be able to handle a few more applactions than me without the hanging , its the same with the cpu , if i was to get a dual core and my buddy got a p4 , a dual core would smoke the p4 just by its shear power ..... so yeah like contrex said it all depends on upgrades and not only that how you treat your computer , registry scans , virus scans , etc keeping it nice and clean will also improve your speed.........

Tony

I agree, my computer was crashing constantly, turns out it was all because of the software I had running.I answered average. My impression of XP's speed has changed with my RAM upgrades. I wasn't happy at all with XP speed when I only had the 128mb my computer came with. As I've upgraded to 256 mb, then 768mb and now 1024mb of RAM my opinion has changed.

One thing that has impressed me from the start (especially since I upgraded from ME) is XP stability. I'm running from an install that's over two years old. XP is sweet, if properly configured, tweaked, and, otherwise raped of all useless features, such as, windows security, automatic updates, windows file protection, the evil SOB dr. watson, and several other things removed after file protection is gone. i have ran XP on a 766mhz celeron, with 384mb of PC133, and a 20gb IBM HDD, ran fine, bit SLOW on boot, great lil web browsing machine, would be good to setup next to your bed for music and web browsing, seeing as it ran extremely cool and quiet. frankly, i love windows xp professional, and, in my native tongue, aint no one can tell me that xp aint the best OS out there, aside from a few thousand crashes on unstable wal-mart computers... for the most part, xp has been deemed junk by idiots. namely the twelve o' clock flashers, where every freaking appliance in there house flashes twelve o clock all the time. sure, xp sucks royally if its not configured properly, and its left running for too long, but i can fix this by killing the windows explorer in the task manager, and re-starting it through there also, no reboot needed, w00t for me. when i setup my own server i will likely setup a batch file that executes every 12hrs or so to "refresh" the explorer. better than a reboot. after all, my server will just be a 2.0ghz celeron 512mb of DDR266, and whatever large cheap IDE HDD's i can get, running server 2003, which i can get for free through my college, w00t again. oh, ANOTHER thing i love about xp, laptop features, though, it takes quite a while longer for the installer to load all the laptop crap into the RAM, which, for those of you who didnt know, is exactly where the xp installer puts the crap while its installing in the text interface. oh, one final thing i love about xp, they made a 64b edition, which, will work very nicely with the orange box release on my inspiron im getting next month, if you want to know the specs of the inspiron im getting, message me. the orange box release supports multi threading, meaning, with dual core CPU's, the physics engine is on core 2, the game is on core 1, and in a 64b environment, the game can utilize up to the max 128gb of ram, rather than the 3.5 for a 32b environment. well, i think ive spoke my love for xp long enough, and i will end on the note of these funny video's:

Dr. Watson

Yeah in my processes tab I always have Dr.Watson Post Mort* and until I close it, my system stays froze perhaps you know why? I am not even sure what it does to tell you the truth
Dr. Watson for Windows is a program error debugger that gathers information about your computer when an error (or user-mode fault) occurs with a program. Technical support GROUPS can use the information that Dr. Watson obtains and logs to diagnose a program error. When an error is detected, Dr. Watson creates a text file (Drwtsn32.log) that can be delivered to support personnel by the method they prefer. You also have the option of creating a crash dump file, which is a binary file that a programmer can load into a debugger.

If a program error occurs, Dr. Watson for Windows starts automatically. To configure Dr. Watson, follow these steps:

1.Click Start, and then click Run.
2.Type drwtsn32, and then click OK.

So you see the program is an "error detective's assistant". It is named after the Doctor Watson who was the assistant of the famous fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Thank you ! If you see Dr Watson a lot, it may be a sign your system is not very stable.

Solve : Good font for typing?

Answer»

I have an unusual request. I'm looking for a font to replace "Times New Boring" as my regular font for writing essays and just about anything non-programming. I have several criteria, though, that have made it difficult. I was hoping I COULD get some recommendations for a new font type.

The criteria:

1. The font ought to correspond roughly in size to Times (i.e. 12-point YourFontHere should be about the same size as 12-point Times, though it does not NEED to be perfect)

2. It should be as easy to read as Times New Roman is (so Old English is out ), and should be soft on the eyes (not Courier)

3. It needs to either come with Windows or be free to obtain; I'm on a $0 budget as usual.

4. It should look different from Times, as the whole reason for doing this is because Times is boring to look at after 6-7 years.

Thanks in advance, guys. Any IDEAS help.I'm trying the Century SCHOOLBOOK font now, with great success. Still, any other ideas are WELCOME.

I used to have the same problem with a desktop computer but it would take longer to cut off. like 30 or 40 minutes. any idea and it is not the user NAME or password as the tech . support is trying to tell me it is. or the connections. connections are fine. Not necessarily...Your phone line, and signal may be fine for regular phone use, but internet connection is much more fragile.
If your phone line is "noisy", your internet connection may see some interruptions.
You can check, if your phone line is "noisy", pretty easily.
Be in quiet room, dial any number. Listen to that split second between end of your dialing, and before dialing sound kicks in. If you can hear something like pretty quiet radio station playing, you have a "noisy" line.
You should request a free SERVICE from your phone company to lower the "noise".

Then, if your internet connection is idling, when you got disconnected, it may be your ISP disconnecting you, so let us know, if this is the case.what ISP stands for?Internet Service Provider.

Solve : CAN'T INSTALL PROGRAMS AFTER DOWNLOADING THEM?

Answer»

I downloaded Nero 7 trial version and when i clicked on the file to install it , it WOULD not launch the exe file, rather it was asking me with which program i would like to use to open the file, this has never happened b4 with my pc cos normally this Nero exe file would just start installing after i clicked on it.
I then right clicked on the file to see if i could find out what's wrong with it and i came to see that the file format was not indicating that it is exe file, rather the format was only showing just "FILE" which is strange to me.
i thought this was problem with Nero 7 ,but to be SURE i downloaded another exe file and the same problem occurred, i have download about three exe file programs and yet i cant install any of them .I have tried to download a video clip to see if the problem is associated wit only exe files and the video played quite ok,so it seem this is exe file problem only.
few days b4 i noticed this problem, i had downloaded and used tweakxp , i strongly suspect this is what had messed up my pc , so i have uninstalled , but the problem still remains.
i would appreciate if there is solution to my problem.

thanks . Have you tried a System Restore to a previous date before all of this started happening?I did restore the pc to the day b4 i installed tweakxp and it didnt solve the problem , thanks for trying to help though , anyone else with some solution ? Is it a ZIP file? often with ZIP files you will need a program such as WinZip, to open them, sorta like a PDF needs adobe acrobat reader Quote from: j-rock1022 on September 28, 2007, 09:38:05 AM

This isn't true with Windows XP...

All you need to do is right-click the zipped file...etract all contents to your desktop...or anywhere you can easily find...then look for the executable to launch the setup files.

However, most zipped applications, if using XP, will automatically extract themselves and launch the setup.exe if the zipped file is configured that way...simply by double-clicking the zipped file on the desktop.

There may be other issues here...but in some cases, it is, i have windows xp on the COMPUTER that i am running now and some files that were zipped wouldnt open unless i used winzip, which i did not have at the timeHave you tried renaming the file to include the .exe EXTENSION?
This sounds like something you have done in tweakxp and you may have to re-install tweakxp to undo it.
Also try downloading the file to your temp DIRECTORY instead of your desktop. Are you sure this is the trial version you DLoaded ? ?
It doesn't come in a zip format and all you do to install is double clik the setup file...Quote from: Fed on September 28, 2007, 02:16:50 PM

Solve : Unlock The Supersecret Vista Administrator Account?

Answer»

Thanks to Lockergnome

When you log on with a normal administrator account in Vista, for example, the one you create during setup, you subject to UAC. This is because you are not logged on with the true Administrator account. This account has been hidden in Vista to prevent USERS from using it as their PRIMARY log on.

If you were to log on with this account, you could make any changes without seeing the UAC prompt.

You can unhide or turn on the Administrator account using the STEPS below:

1. Type CMD in the Search field on the Start menu.
2. Right click the command prompt icon at the top of the Start menu and click Run as administrator.
3. Type 'Net user administrator /active:yes'.

Once you complete these steps, the Administrator account will appear on the Welcome screen. To disable once again HIDE the account, repeat steps 1/2 described above and type 'Net user administrator /active:no'.This will also work on Windows XP Home Edition.
I have tested this.

Solve : money for torrent trackers?

Answer»

Hello
Many people know torrent SERVICES and most of them have information about trackers.
As you know, trackers are a SITE. Hence, they require domain, host, server and internet connection. To get these (domain, host …), the trackers NEED money. But, how they earn money?

(In the website of the trackers you can see some ADVERTISEMENTS, but they are not enough for a tracker with such internet TRAFFIC)

Thanks

Solve : email addresses?

Answer»

having a problem with a email address. im running win xp, and emails are THRUGH msn. everytime i get a email from this 1 person and i go to reply it has the wrong email address in the to: space. any one know how i can fix this.
thanks
maryThis may not be an issue on your side. You may want to CHECK with the person that you are replying to to make sure they don't have the reply to address in their email account set to something else. Also, ASK them if anyone else is having the same issue as you are when you reply to them. If others are having this same issue, then it is the person you are replying to that needs to change their account setting.

For example, I know someone who has four different email addresses and uses one OUTLOOK profile to view all messages in one area. When he replies to a message from any of his four email addresses, he has the reply to set as only one email address which is different from the address he was replying from.

Hope this made sense.
