Solve : Crazy multi-monitor/computer setup?

Nice toys. But he obviously has more money than common sense.

Try reading what he says on the website before jumping to conclusions. If he started from nothing, then there's obviously a reason why he has so much money, don't you think?
I agree with 2k_dummy here. Unless I see some financial FIGURES, some cost-benefit analysis of all that hardware, that truly justifies such an elaborate setup from prudent business perspective, I have to say this guy is just feeding an obsession rather than using good common sense.

And, I do know the benefits of multiple monitors. I have two connected to my computer. And, I fully agree with a COMMENT in one the previous POSTS saying the multiple monitors can increase productivity. I have no doubt whatsoever that many office workers could be more productive with two monitors than with one, and that this can be supported cost-benefit analysis. By cost-benefit analysis, I simply mean that the benefit of a second, third, ..., monitor can be shown, by time and motion studies, to prove that the cost of an additional monitor results in additional revenue, TYPICALLY measured on an annual basis, of at least the cost of the monitor and related costs (power consumption, bigger desk, etc.), and preferably the additional revenue should not just equal but exceed the additional cost and thereby increase net profit.

One of the points that I got from reading his comments is that he doesn't like having to minimize one application to view another application on the same monitor. And, indeed, that, and copy and paste procedures between two windows, is most likely where the increase in productivity with multiple monitors come from. And, if we applied the same philosophy, most of us would need more than two monitors. If I say, well, 10% percent of the time, I may have 5 or more applications open at the same time; therefore, I need at least 5 monitors. Where does this game end? Again, show me the cost-benefit analysis.

This guy has GONE to the extreme and I doubt very much he can justify all his acquisitions based on cost-benefit analysis. He also must have a very tolerant "partner" (presumably his wife).
Have any of you ever stumbled upon this http://www.plastk.net/highres/24mon/ ? The guy uses 24 monitors to play Quake 3 on. He has some videos of it in action and it is actually pretty awesome to watch.

He also has a 50 monitor setup which is just rediculous.Actually, those huge setups are a project at, and belong to, Virginia Tech university. And, they seem to be geared toward special applications such as viewing of large geographical areas, perhaps with data streamed from surveillance satellites. At least, that's what seems to be displayed on the screens shown at http://infovis.cs.vt.edu/gigapixel/Quote

I wouldn't enjoy it with all the monitor rims in the way.Yeah, that would bug me no end.
But what about taking the bezels off?
Then the screens would only have a very small line between them.
I think that'd be fantastic.What I dont understand:
Why not just set up a few projectors and have a big screen like that.Quote
What I dont understand:
Why not just set up a few projectors and have a big screen like that.

agree'd. but if you absolutly HAVE to use that many monitors, remove the housings of each and make some sort of huge uber single housing so that they have only a fine line between them. seems more logical to me.

Oddly, he lost the Popular vote, but won the Electoral. Technically, he did win, but it was extremely close.

2Bush as ppl know has trouble stringing sentences together, was looking shaky as a president..

As it happens, I too have a speech impediment: I will think of two synonyms for a word and say them both. Leads me to saying things like "creat" ("cool" and "great"). Yet, I have done my best to help thousands of people with computer trouble, and actually helped them considerably.

My point is simply this: You don't have to speak as well as a lawyer to be intelligent, and picking on G. W. Bush for his speech problems is silly, at best. (Heck, even he makes fun of his speech issues. Which makes your point... shaky, at best.)

No, he wasn't. The Gulf War occurred as a result of Iraq invading Kuwait. Wikipedia actually has a decent summary of the Gulf War:

"I can hear you. And the rest of the nation can hear you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!

That doesn't sound like a politician. FRANKLY, he sounds/sounded pissed off. I was too young at the time to know exactly what all the implications were about what 9/11 meant, but had it happened today, I'd be more than a little pissed off myself.Quote

Solve : hard drive backup?

Answer»

is it possible to backup an entire LAPTOP hard drive via usb to another hard drive including operating system? via usb. will the new drive have everything including complete OS. will it now BOOT the laptop if installed in its hard drive bay? thanks for helpYou can use a program such as Acronis TrueImage or Norton Ghost to make an image of the HDD.
This will include everything on the current HDD.
It is often used when changing the hard disk, or to make a backup in case the drive fails.
Is that what you're looking for?yes I want to install a new hard drive but thought windows might have something inbeded in XP that would prevent copying the WHOLE drive including the operating system. would I need a usb drive connector or perhaps an ultra bay connector for a hard drive. I have an Ibm with a pentium 3 .running windows xp pro
thanks for your inputYou cannot do what you want with WIndows by itself. You will need a ghosting problem as mentioned. It sounded like you misunderstood that part.no I realize I will need a program such as you mentioned but was wondering if those ghost programs require additional hardware. No additional hardware. Other than the drive you want to back up and the drive (if a different drive) that you want to back it up to.

Solve : dual core?

Answer»

when u have on demand scan like kaspersky internet secruity all day long and slows down all else, is it better to have a dual core computer ?
will it interfear with me playing games or doing work ?
Your internet security real-time protection will not slow your PC down greatly, unless it's a very resource-hungry program or a slow PC.
It will not normally interfere with anything you do.
However, if it is scheduled to run scans at certain times, then whilst a scan is running your PC will slow down a lot.
A dual core CPU will help it slow down less, but the speed of the HDD matters more there, because the scan will use your HDD more than the CPU.
Does that make sense, and does it help? You MAY find that somewhere in the antivirus scanners options and settings, there is an option (that should be something like) Scan All Files, or Scan Only Executables.

Though, like Calum SAID, the Antivirus canner shouldent cause major slowdown, you can limit what it scans with its active shield.

A NOTE:
Though this will make your computer FASTER, it will allow more file types to get in.
Please note that this could allow a virus to get into your system, though non-executable files are not as likely to give you a virus, they still can.so i won't have to get more ram for it ?

or a 8mb cache hard drive then ?

yes ur info helped tyvm

What are your current specs?current specs ? pIII 1ghz 384ram 80 gig 2mb cache

is that what u meant ?

but getting new computer in a monthI see.
That should be fine to run an internet security SUITE on.
Dual core will help, but it's not necessary.

Solve : Fla. teen stumbles upon Mammoth tooth?

Answer»

SEMINOLE, Fla. - A 16-year-old high school student stumbled upon what archaeologists say could be the biggest fossil find in Pinellas County in nearly a century. A shiny black rock caught Sierra Sarti-Sweeney's eye as she was taking pictures last month in Boca CIEGA Millennium Park.

"I LOOKED down and saw a huge bone that could not be a rock. Most of it was exposed, but we dug and found that it was bigger and bigger. I thought, 'Oh my gosh, what are these? Are they people bones?'" she said.

The jaw and tooth weigh 65 pounds and are about a yard long. Sarti-Sweeney took the bones home and, after some online research with her older brother, determined the football-sized rock was actually the tooth of a long-extinct mammoth.

A little expensive though.i just noticed something about the keyboard. it is NOT in the US standard layout. which, for me, is a MAJOR inconveinence, if i buy something THAT expensive i expect it to be pretty much perfect.Im sure it can probably be configured, perhaps it operates a lot on the computer-side then the keyboard side? That's cool, except the fact that all of the keys are flat. I rely on the ability to feel where a key is in order to touch-type...

7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs.

109 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please

4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"

143 to say "do a search on 'light bulbs' before posting questions

Solve : Do you like Audio ??

Answer»

What is your impression about setting up Audio on a site ?

You can read a result from a survey here.It depends on what type of music it is. And quite possibly who is singing it.Hi I am not talking about Music.

I am talking about using audio for the same purpose a webpage is used.

i.e. GIVING feedback, product review, dicussion about a topic, tutorials ETC.No, I don't like Audio then, it tends to get annoying.I'd like it available, but not automatic.I keep my sound turned down most of the time.

So,I would be thrilled!

But,I suppose in many cases it would be a really
good idea.I personally and professionally believe it's not a good idea. I almost always have some type of music or other podcast going and don't like to visit a site that starts playing music and/or other audio that is talking about the website or its services. Honestly sites that automatically start playing either of these types of audio is almost always a site I instantly leave.

If you're going to have any type of audio on the site I believe it should be something that requires the USER to click a button to start playing.I generally prefer not to hear audio on websites. One exception is an e-card site, such as http://www.jacquielawson.com/cardlink.asp, but the e-card pages ususally only play sound when the visitor clicks on a button or LINK. Another exception is online tutorials. I think Microsoft does a nice JOB of integrating audio into some of their tutorials. For example, see Help and How-to > Training > Outlook 2003. They have a Media Player control bar embedded in the page so that you can turn mute audio, pause, etc.

Solve : Graphics cards and laptops?

I need to find a laptop with a GOOD graphics card that complies with this list here:
http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?help_id=280

Im not a fan of Intel cards, as I have had bad expirence with them.

I am looking for a new laptop with a card that is on that list for $750 with 1GB of RAM

I have TRIED NewEgg, and only found a few. Dead_Reckon tried NewEgg, and found a few better ones, but still, we both cant find ONE with a compatible card.

I was HOPING to find one with Windows Vista Home Premium installed.
All the laptops I and Dead_Reckon have found that COMPLY with my specifications all have non-compatible Nividia GeForce Go 6150 cards, Radeon x1000 cards, and Radeon 100 and 200m cards.

Anyone have ideas?I've been looking for a while, and I can't find any laptops with a graphics card on the list for that price.
Apart from the low-end Intel graphics, and even if it works it won't work well on them.
Also, pay attention to the part where it says you need an ATI Radeon 9600 or greater for the game on Vista.
So you need an X1400 class or similar, maybe a little lower would do.
I tried Newegg and TigerDirect, I don't know of any other good US shops being a poor English man.
I'll keep looking out though.

PLEASE HELP ME T_~

I would start by posting a question on the appropriate Dell forum. This may be a known issue.

http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board?board.id=dim_other

If it is still under warranty I would contact Dell directly.yeah its not and they charge about 50$ just to tell you what the problem is if they know what it is. If they dont know whats wrong they DONT refund your money and start blabbing about saving on a new computer blablablaThe support forum is free.I've never ENCOUNTERED this issue so I'd assume that the forum may be the best bet as well. The only thing I could think of over the night (read your post before going to sleep last night), is possibly a sticky button and/or button malfunction that is not sending the signal to the motherboard. Could also be a defective motherboard.

Another thing that could be TRIED is to disconnect everything but the power cord and see if the computer comes on immediately after pressing the power button. If so maybe it's a really strange hardware conflict/issue.Well thanks for your help everyone i guess ill dry the dell forums they seem pretty nice hehe ^_^. And yeah i tried unplugging everything even unplugging the disk drives to make it go on but nothing still same thing.Good luck. Sorry couldn't help you further, strange issue indeed. Likely a hardware issue.

Solve : Avatar optimization offer to Carbon Dudeoxide?

Answer»

Yo, carbon monoxide, er, Carbon Dudeoxide, I haven't posted any of my avatar offers for quite awhile and, when I saw the actual size of your avatar, I IMMEDIATELY flagged it as the next CANDIDATE.

You're using a 1024x768 pixel image with a file size of 498,331 bytes to display a 65x49 pixel avatar which could easily be less than 3,000 bytes. You can save significant bandwidth usage and speed up forum viewing by any DIALUP users out there by downsizing your image to the actual dimensions of your avatar and using that image instead of the 1024x768 pixel image (which happens to be the resolution I have my monitor SET to).

Here's your image RESIZED to a 65x49 pixel image of 2,818 bytes. Feel free to save it to your hard drive and replace your current avatar image with it.

lol...thx for that

All displays should have some type of default or FACTORY setting that can be USED. Unfortunately it's different for each monitor so you'd need to consult the documentation to determine how to do that. I tried finding the documenation but for the monitor you listed above I only found online versions that were not free. I believe this is an LG Electronics monitor and you should be able to find a free version on their site, but need to know the model number to get access to it. Once you get the model number try visiting the below link.

http://us.lge.com/products/category/list/tv|audio|video.jhtmli cannot find the model number. i did find the model name FB995E - UA.
but it was no help. also i had to go to the LGE canadian site eh.
but i believe i have found 2 possible model numbers for my monitor T910BU and 900B. from this page http://ca.lge.com/en/proddivergent.do?actType=search&categoryId=040101&modelCategoryId=&parentId=04
but i did not see anything about the specific numbers for the OSD from either of them. perhaps you couldHave you tried safemode and last known good configuration ?

Solve : Laser printer?

Any recommendations on a color laser printer under $500? LOOKING to print up brochures for the biz and don't want to get locked into having to print 1000 off-the-bat.

Alan <>< I have no idea but I just took at look at what Newegg.com has, and they have some BIG PRICE reductions on some units. See Home > Text SEARCH Terms: color laser printerThanks soybean. That's the first place I check for stuff. Good prices / delivery times. Newegg does rock.

Alan <>< www.ebay.com -- Sometimes you get something good, sometimes you dont. Make sure that the printer has a return policy, and I would also check for the CUSTOMER ratings on the seller.

Definitely wouldn't want SOMEONE to hold or wear an iPod and TEST something like this. But if you HAPPEN to get an iPod and remember to do this it would be interesting. But I wouldn't worry about it too much, I'm sure it will be a matter of time and someone is going to do this and post it on YouTube or some other site. Stephen Hawking plans ride of his life.

Stephen Hawking, the British cosmologist, Cambridge professor and best-selling author who has spent his CAREER pondering the nature of gravity from a wheelchair, says he intends to get away from it all for a little while.

On April 26, Hawking, surrounded by a medical entourage, is to take a zero-gravity ride out of Cape Canaveral on a so-called vomit comet, a padded aircraft that flies a roller-coaster trajectory to produce periods of weightlessness. He is getting his lift gratis, from Zero Gravity, a company that has been flying thrill seekers on a special BOEING 727-200 since 2004 at $3,500 a trip.

Peter H. Diamandis, chief executive of Zero G, said that "the idea of giving the world's expert on gravity the opportunity to experience zero gravity" was irresistible.

Jim

Well that is some important information to include. Try the known good RAM alone in each slot. You need to isolate where the problem is.

As I asked, what were the characteristics of the RAM, not just the speed? Go to www.crucial.com, input your model number and see the details. You might also tell us how old the laptop is

When a chip, such as RAM, "burns out", it doesent necessarily mean literately burning.
Just that it might have received too MUCH power (due to power input, like electrical surge, perhaps even power outage ends)

Just that the chip was damaged. (Though, sometimes, problems will occur where it looks like a fire happened.)

My computer's fan is making a humming noise and I'm not sure why. I don't think it is rubbing anything but I don't know for sure. If you have any ideas they would be appreciated. Thanks

could be anything.. but, if you want to try, put just a drop of transmission fluid on the bearings of the fan, be careful, turn it with your finger a couple times to set it in. after its set for a while put it back in and test it but make SURE that you did not accedentally put so much in it that it will splatter or run out of the fancould the fact that it is dusty in the tower contribute to the noise and what are some good methods of cleaning out the inside of a computer? ThanksQuote
could the fact that it is dusty in the tower contribute to the noise and what are some good methods of cleaning out the inside of a computer? Thanks

dust is always a large factor. try cleaning up the fan and case. if that doesnt fix it, make sure the fan is securely mounted. what model of computer is this that your having the problem with? if its a dell, the fan is probably the problem. it happens alot.
the computer is a Dell Dimension 5100Quote
the computer is a Dell Dimension 5100

thought it was a dell.. i'd just try to clean it out, make sure everything is secure, if this doesnt fix it, just pay attention to the fan. if it does fail, do not use the computer, the rear fan in dells now-a-days is what cools the CPU. a local PC shop may be able to replace it if it does fail.Am I going to need to remove the fan from its cage or can I just use on of those compressed air bottles and blow through the fan compartment? Or are there any other methods for cleaning the interior of a computer that might be helpful. Thanks alot.Quote
Am I going to need to remove the fan from its cage or can I just use on of those compressed air bottles and blow through the fan compartment? Or are there any other methods for cleaning the interior of a computer that might be helpful. Thanks alot.

you can remove it if you want to, but, yes, a compressed can of air will do. just, hold the fan in place when you blow it. if you blow out the power supply, carefully use a toothpick or a small plastic or wooden object to hold its fan in place, also, make sure its not so small it will fall into the power supply. lastly, make note of the next four things:

1. spray the can a little when you first get it, as the liquid inside will sometimes squirt out, and, though this will vaporize in a matter of seconds, i dont think it would be the best to get it on any electronic devices (AKA, your motherboard).

2. do NOT tilt the can too far or you will cause the liquid to spray out thats inside the can.

3. if the can starts to get cold when using, sit it down and let it warm up or you will dissapate the liquid inside faster, also, be careful, the cans can get REALLY cold, and, though i have never had it happen to me, there have been cases of people being careless and getting frost bite from the can. (yes it will develop frost on the outside of the cans if the conditions are right).

4. be sure to spray out the computer in a well ventilated area four two reasons:
* The dust will fly in and just circulate right back into the computer.
* Its not the most healthy thing to be breathing the fumes.OK I have cleaned the fan and entire interior of the tower with compressed air and now the fan doesn't make any noise for a while when i turn the computer on but after several minutes it will start making noise again. It is the power supply fan not the larger one at the front of the machine. Does this mean it is more of an internal problem and is it ok to leave alone as long as it is still spinning and working? ThanksIf it is the PSU fan i would look into getting a new PSU from Dell. The PSU having a problem or overheating can take all other components with it.I think i had the same problem with Ben. A few days ago, i kicked my comp by ACCIDENT and there were these weird noises. I thought the fan was loose or something but the sound went away after like 10 minutes so If you already have your computer out, see if the fan or any other part is loose. Just a thought.Fans, though small, are an important part of todays modern computing.

Your average processor should get to about 106 DEGREES (F) after a few minutes of being started.
(not sure of the PSU statistics) (PSU: Power Supply Unit)

Now, if you let things overheat, they start breaking down, melting, and wearing.

Fans, Heat syncs, and water cooling systems, all do 2 things: Make your computer last long, and prevent smoke/fire

Computers have at least 2 fans in them, they are vital: The CPU Fan, and the PowerSupplyUnit fan. Both handle a high-power device.

It is possible to replace the PSU fan yourself, but much easier to buy a new one. If the fan is wearing out, it may be time to replace the PSU anyways.

Solve : Which do you prefer, MAC or PC?

Answer»

I know there have been loads of debates weather a MAC is better than a PC or PC is better than a MAC.
Here are 3 PC vs MAC videos from Youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEAGmBRC1dc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQb_Q8WRL_g
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-JdC04vBik

Now lets see what the audience thinks, just for fun I don't think EITHER is better.
They both have their own strengths and weaknesses.
I guess by Mac you mean an Apple computer with Mac OS, and a PC is any other brand computer with Windows?
The difference nowadays is just the OS and brand, so why not include Linux boxes too?Oh joy....another Poll...Of course a PC is better than a Mac.I voted Neither. My xbox is better Mac was nuts. lol, didn't PUT linux up there because there aren't many debates with linux being better than xp or mac or another os

Mac doesn't have right click....hard to believe for PC/Windows USERS i voted for pc but then i would prefer actully mac IF
i was using my ipod (less PROBLEMS wif those itunes thingys)
has any1 notice that windows vista and mac os looks like the same thing...
itz just like black for vista and white for mac itz just too weird..voted PC.. personally, i hate how macs started using Core 2 Duo CPU's and then started RANTING about how they come with a built in web cam and such.. all i have to say to macs is this: is it really worth paying several grand for something that most if not all of your software will not work with?

Solve : Starting my own website?

Answer»

Where is this Calum?

Remember"Santa's Little Helper' Hey, sorry to bump this but I felt I'd better reply.
I have my hosting etc all sorted out, I'm currently designing the site with Dreamweaver 8.
I think I may go with SMF rather than YaBB for the form, it seems pretty good and has a lot of useful features.
How hard is it to set up and MAINTAIN compared to YaBB?
Oh, and the new site is darkblade.110mb.com, nothing there yet because I've been busy, not much time for designing.
It's got to be there by Sunday though or my account is deleted, it's part of the TOS (15 days to set up a homepage).
Thanks for all the help so far everyone.Admittedly the conversion process at least for YaBB to SMF was not that simple, however, that being said the installation was pretty EASY. A big difference however from YaBB to SMF is that SMF requires a MySQL to be setup and not all HOSTS will have this. So before jumping ship to SMF, make sure your host has MySQL and that you're able to setup a database.I do have MySQL, but I haven't done ANYTHING with it because I really know nothing about it.
I wasn't sure was I needed to do or anything.
Is that hard?Depends on what your ISP has setup. But for the most part it's not too bad. You're not really doing much more than setting up a database and most ISP's or hosts do that for you, you just tell them what name you want the database.Hmm . . . well, I'll get on the 110mb support forums and see what they have to tell me.
I'm new to this but I am learning, need to get my site done FIRST and then I'll start having a better look at the forums side of things.

Solve : KEYBOARD NOT RESPONDING?

Answer»

my keyboard dosen't respond, instead when i press the key all 3 lights start blinkng.what must be the problem?I'm assuming this issue is happening everywhere (for example, happens immediately after turning on computer).

This issue could be CAUSED by either the keyboard controller or more likely the keyboard. I'd suggest trying a different keyboard on the computer. If another keyboard works fine it's a BAD keyboard. If another keyboard does not work or has the same issues UNFORTUNATELY your motherboard will need to be replaced or you will need to USE a different keyboard interface such as a USB keyboard.

Solve : .mp3.downloading?

Answer»

Hi, i'm trying to OPEN this file to play, not having much luck, has anyone any IDEAS?

Many thanxalso, i've tried changing the file extention, still no luck.

thanx againIf you change the file EXTENSION by replacting e.g. filename.mp3 to filename.wma, it pretty much destroys the file.
Try using VLC Media Player to play the file.
VLC Media player also plays almost all movie files.

Link to download:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/I believe you should change the file extension back to the original. Then, try VLC.

Changing a file extension is not GOING to convert and .mp3 to a .wma file or vice versa. The file, itself, still has the mp3 or wma characteristics it had before changing the file extension.

Solve : Sounds accelerated?

Answer»

Hi all, I've recently acquired a problem with the sounds on my PC.

All of the sounds are way too fast for what they should be. Startup sounds, Shutdown sounds, and every sound made by a program in between.

I noticed the problem after I had LEFT my computer on while making a trip for food. I had a game running, and I came back to my PC having restarted itself, and PAUSED at the black startup screen, stuck at listing my power supply.

I restarted it manually, but now all of my sounds are ENTIRELY too fast to be USEFUL. Sounds also tend to be choppy during movies. Thanks for reading this! What operating system are you using?
Have you made any modifications to the sound card settings?
What happens when you reinstall the drivers?Windows XP Pro.
I don't know that I've changed anything dealing with the sound card.
I tried updating the drivers that I can think of, but I don't know if I've done them all.

I have noticed this morning that my computer is apparently recognizing my speakers as a microphone. Doe that mean there's something wrong with the 'line out' jack on my computer, and how would I go about testing/replacing that?Do you have a Restore Point prior to this happening? If so, restore to that point and see whether that helps.

To find your Restore Points: Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | System Restore.

Solve : Ashes of Star Trek's 'Scotty' Headed to Space?

Answer»

A FINAL request of Canadian actor James Doohan will be honored later this year, when a portion of his ashes will be blasted into space. Doohan, who built a huge following among fans of the Star Trek series for his role as chief engineer MONTGOMERY "Scotty" Scott, died on July 20, 2005, from a combination of Alzheimer's and pneumonia.

The bulk of his remains were scattered over Puget Sound in Washington, but two small portions were retained for memorialization in space. On April 28, a seven-gram CONTAINER of Doohan's ashes will be included in a memorial spaceflight service provided by Celestis, a subsidiary of the Houston-based Space Services, Inc. Doohan's remains will be joined by those of more than 200 other individuals, including "Mercury 7" astronaut Gordon Cooper.

The payload, dubbed the "Legacy Flight" by Celestis, will be carried into a suborbital altitude by a rocket launched by UP Aerospace at New Mexico's "Spaceport America," a facility located NEAR the White Sands Missile Range. After achieving its intended altitude, the memorial canister will parachute to Earth and the individual remains will be returned to family members with a commemorative plaque.

Space Flight Ambassador

In a statement posted to the Space Services Web site, Doohan's widow Wende said that her husband was proud to serve as an ambassador for space flight. "[Jimmy] promoted space exploration and travel wherever he went," she wrote. "I can't think of a more fitting send-off than having some of his fans attend this, his final journey." Fans of Doohan are invited to post messages that will be digitized and sent into space with his ashes.

Solve : Is this an email scam??

Answer»

No bank in their right mind will EVER send you an email about your service status, account information, updating contact INFO, fraud alerts, or anything relating.

This is against almost all banks policies, and is a way to prevent fraud.

Email is too open to allow such inportant sensitive information to be exchanged.

True, but in this case, no bank was involved. The company was merely reminding him that a credit card he was using for regular payment on that account was about to expire.

In other words, he does not need to logon to a website to make payment every month, or whatever billing period they use. He has created a user profile on the company's website whereby he designated a credit card to be automatically charged each billing period. Credit cards have expiration dates, after which any transactions attempted with the card would be rejected. The credit card issuer normally SENDS a new card with a new expiration date to replace the old card.

In this case, if Kip does not logon to his account and update the credit card expiration date, future charges against that card by this vendor would be rejected and his account with them might be closed or suspended, with an interruption in service.Ok, I understand now. (I still think that buisnesses have no right to even mention "credit card" in emails, but this is acceptable. )

Thanks for the explanation, Soybean (applaud)Quote from: soybean on April 02, 2007, 02:30:59 PM

We know.

Just thought everybody needed my learned opinion. I'm new to this site. I just wanted to say that the announcement looked similar to some of the five fake "ads" I looked at, on bank web sites.

Each site SAID that a message similar to yours was a scam. Some said that just by opening the e-mail, you might download an executable program that would either send your personal information to a web site, or use your computer to send e scam mails to other people on the web. Most web sites said that the "requesting site" was fake, even though it looked real.

Three of the sites advised that if you either opened the e-mail, or clicked on a link, you should call or e-mail the bank and report that your card was compromised or stolen.

Here is some information from one of the sites:

"The latest phish e-mail scams pretend to be from Visa, MASTERCARD or a Credit Union organization claiming that because of a recent Phishing attack, card companies have deactivated member debit cards. The scammers then ask the e-mail recipient to reactivate their cards by inputting card information, also stating there is no reason to call, but if there are problems to call customer service. VISA, MASTERCARD, LORMET or CREDIT UNION ORGANIZATIONS WILL NEVER E-MAIL YOU AND ASK FOR PERSONAL INFORMATION. Recipients should not click on any links in the message and should delete the message. "

(personally, I don't see much difference between starting off by telling you that your card is expired or about to expire, or that it is about to be "deactivated".)

You might want to check it out. In order to GET to a number of legitimate sites, just go to a good search engine, and put in the terms " e mail scam credit card"

Then make up your own mind.

Whenever I startup my notebook, an error message occurs and it says "An internal error has occured. We suggest that you re-install the application". There is NEITHER information on where the error is from, nor when it has occured. I have tried to use System Restore to restore the settings back to an earlier date, unfortunately, no restore point is available. Would ANYONE please give me some suggestions or advices to get rid of this error message? Thanks!Hello, and welcome to the CH forums.
In order to help you we will need some more information.
When did this start, and what happened before it STARTED?
What make/model of notebook is it?
What OS and service pack?
What protection do you have?
Can you take a screenshot of this error message and attach it to a post?I have a 4-month old DELL Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP, SP2. I am currently using Norton Internet Security 2006. 2 months ago, my WiFi stopped working and I've called Dell helpline to reslove the problem. After trying what was suggested, nothing helped. Eventually, the service personnel remote accessed my notebook to reactivate my WiFi again. About 2 weeks later, the error message started to appear.
I am not sure if the fixing of my WiFi or the authorisation of the remote access by Dell has caused the error to occur, since these are the 2 events that occurred prior to the error. I have not installed or uninstalled and programme during this period of time.
Unfortunately, I am not able to attach the screenshot. I'm not sure why too, as I've tried to attach the screenshot twice already, but the message seems to be unable to get itself posted on the forum with the attachment.
Thanks for replying.
Start>Run>Msconfig
Go to the startup tab and untick the suspects then reboot.
A little trial & error may help you find the program.
Don't forget to reboot between changes. Thanks alot, the SOLUTION works!!!

Please help...got a text FILE that I need to load to a PROGRAM that only accepts csv....

If the contents of the file are in csv format, you can just change the .csv extension to .txt. In most versions of Windows, you need to ensure that file extensions are being displayed, to do this. E.g., in XP, go to Windows Explorer: Tools-->Folder Options->View. Untick "Hide file extensions..."Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on April 02, 2007, 12:42:28 PM

I think his situation is just the opposite. So, he WOULD be changing a .txt file extension to .csv.

Also, wannabe, if you have Microsoft EXCEL, you could open the text file with it and save it as CSV.

Thanks Rob
I will try your solution to convert .txt to .csv Thanks to Soybean
You understood the problem and my thanks for the solution I swear that opening POST said something different when I first replied!!!

Solve : YouTube screwing up... HELP!?

Answer»

For some reason whenever I load up a youtube video it gets to about 1.50 (streaming beautifully, I might ad) and then just stops. It GOES back to the start and acts like it hasn't loaded one second. That is, a bar that was almost completely red (the progress bar I guess you could call it) turns black!

What's going on and how do I fix it .

Thanks in advanced...What kind of connection do you have ? ?

Also since they are getting hammered for TV copyright content right now it may be on their end....

Clear your browser cache and temp. internet files. If what Patio said didnt work, Adobe Flash Player might not be functioning.
You might try and reinstall Adobe/Macromedia Player

To do this:
Click start menu
and go to Control Panel

Find "Add/Remove Programs" (Or, for Vista, find "Uninstall a Program")
Find Adobe/Macromedia Flash Player 9
Uninstall it

Then install it again here:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&promoid=BIOX
Be sure to uncheck the "Install Yahoo Toolbar" option if it shows up. (Unless you want it)

Also:
If you are using a proxy, try another proxy, or stop using a proxy all together. Good point Zylstra...
There is also an issue with uninstalling Flash as well if your suggestions do not produce JOY joy...

How long do they have maintenance, because this has been going on for weeks.
About the maintenance:
Chances are, its not completely relating with your issue, but it may be the cause of some other problems.

Solve : HELP! URGENT!?

Answer»

Hey guys,
Just this past week we discovered that we are victims of identity theft. Someone got hold of our credit card number and ordered a Dell Laptop online with our money.

My question -- can Dell/Microsoft somehow track down the laptop and pinpoint its EXACT location, thus finding the culprit?Depending on the model and it's features...but i doubt it.

Unless it had a GPS card installed and registered. No, this will not normally be possible.
However, you could get in touch with Dell and tell them about this, and get them to cancel the order if it is not too LATE.
If it is too late, contact your credit card company and see what they can do about REFUNDING your money.
You may have some rights here.
Finally, consider how this happened, and take steps to prevent this in future. You should NOTIFY the credit card provider immediately upon such a discovery. Likewise, I would contact Dell about this immediately, if not already done, and maintain a log of your contacts with both Dell and the credit card company.

And, see this for some guidance in this matter: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/idtheft/

But let's say the guy registers with Dell/Microsoft... can't they find out his MAC address?Did he order it over the internet? Or did they order it over the phone? If it was by the phone then they could trace down where that call came from. Or if its not too late you could ring Dell up, inform them of the situation, and ask them what the address the laptop was posted to is, so you could therefore inform the feds.
I would also strongly suggest that you change all your PASSWORDS for everything else. Do you know if they got your details via the internet or just by going through your rubbish?!
Best of luck

ChrisQuote from: Bastardly123 on April 03, 2007, 02:04:56 PM

But let's say the guy registers with Dell/Microsoft... can't they find out his MAC address?
That's pretty much a needle-in-a-haystack situation, I'm afraid. As far as Dell is concerned, of course, the laptop was not stolen and Dell has not been defrauded, so even if they could help, my cynical mind thinks it unlikely that they'd put much effort into it.

Depending on your country of origin, you may well receive a full refund from your credit card company, and hopefully no great harm will be done. It's simply an unfortunate fact of life, and the resources are not available to track down all fraudsters.

Consider tightening up security with your card company though. Some companies have a policy that they don't approve of delivery of goods being made to an address that is not registered with them. Depending on the info passed on by the retailer to the card company, this kind of scam can be stopped fairly early in its tracks.

You don't have a Mail icon because you don't have Outlook installed. Installing it adds the Mail icon to your Control Panel.

One more comment: If you have no other significant INTEREST in Outlook except to enable faxing, I think you can find much cheaper alternatives, such as http://www.rkssoftware.com/mightyfax/overview.html
This does not require Outlook. Get it and be done with this.

JpHey,
Did someone modify my last Post, i.e., . . d**n, ??

And Soybean, Here's what they said;

As for messaging subsystem problem: Have you tried to create
new messaging profile as was described in previous message?
It's neccessary change either you have had Outlook installed or not.

I don't want you to get all disappointed that this is hopeless, but I needed to tell you this so that you might in some way profit by info.

Solve : No Signal to Monior?

Answer»

Hi there

I'm hoping that someout there will be able to help me. My sons computer was working fine yesterday, but TODAY it's on the blink. When we switch it on, th monitor just says 'no signal'. Have checked everything, (cables, all cards to make sure they have not displodged, ect) and everyhting is fine, but we still get the smae message. The monitor works when we PLUG in into another computer.
Any ideas?

Based off your testing it appears that the issue is not with your monitor, which unfortunately means the issue is likely with you video card or if your video is on the MOTHERBOARD an issue with your motherboard.

If you have two video connections, it likely means you have both an on board video card and a video card, try the other connection. I've encountered issues with users disconnecting the monitor and connecting it to the wrong connection.

If you only have one video connection and have a video card in the computer you may want to first attempt to open the computer and disconnect and reconnect the video card, in some cases the video card can become loose. If this does not work unfortunately it's likely your video card is bad and I'd suggest replacing the video card.

If you do not have a video card (video CONNECTOR on the motherboard with all other connections) unfortunately it's likely that the motherboard is bad and unfortunately it will have to be replaced.

Does the computer make the usual 'beep' sounds when starting / fans & hard drive spinning?

Solve : Help me setup my Laptop's HDD with a bootable Microsoft OS [Atleast Ms Dos]?

Answer» My Case
I have SuperSport 286 PC Compatible Laptop, from the Zenith Data System Corporation. I had previously identified its model as ZWL-0800-02 until I visited the Internet and realized that the closest model of the available series of the Laptop was ZWL-0200-02. The fact is that the Model Label in my Laptop casing is defaced and therefore unintelligible. For that reason, I’ve concluded that it is a ZWL-0200-02.
I realized that the thing could not boot into any familiar Operating System. Infact, I have so far concluded that the System Software it’s booting to is not resident in the Hard Disk, coz the Error I keep on receiving is “Disk Error! Disk not ready” This is in the first instance. I’m then given an option to “Esc” and continue, upon which a second Error message appears “Non-System disk. Please replace and press any other key to continue.” My understanding is that the Disk is basically not accessible: I’m not sure whether it could be that it had not been procedurally installed in a manner that could render it bootable (that is, partitioning, formatting and loading it with an appropriate Operating System). Else, maybe I should have verified that the HDD has an active partition, but the current Ms Dos OS I have won’t boot at all from the Floppy Disk. I haven’t verified that it’s corrupt yet, but I’ll be trying to do that so as to use its FDISK utility to see if I can access the HDD.
In the CMOS setup, as you may be aware, there is an option to boot directly into the “System Software” I’ve just talked about. This one has been brand-named the “MFM-200 Monitor” Screen, indicating a “Version 2.7B”. Please note that I’m familiar with the Microsoft Operating Systems, ranging from the latest versions of Dos (MS Dos Ver 6, 6.22 and 7) and up to all Windows based OSs, Win 95, 98, Millennium, NT, 2000, XP and now Vista. However, the Command Prompt at the MFM-200 Monitor Screen is neither the one of an Ms Dos OS nor that of the Command Prompt program shipped with Windows based OSs . I haven’t come across other OSs , like the infamous Linux Distributions and the rest, but it would be incredible that this prompt is one of them!
Now, the first thing I’m requesting you to assist me with, is configuring the CMOS setup utility (Remember that the subject is a SuperSport 286 ZWL-0200-02 unless you’re sure there is a -0800-02). I trust that you’ve come across this exact Model, or you really have the means to know the contents of this CMOS utility. I just completed the Kenyan Courses covering the CompTIA’s syllabuses of A+, N+ and INet+, so don’t worry too much about explaining things to me: At least I assure you I’ll be in a position to understand this jargon. In line with this, however, I’ve attached for your reference the most relevant document I’d come up with from the Net, detailing the various Specs of a supposedly SuperSport 286 ZWL-0200-02. I’m afraid and sorry to mention that it never helped me solve the following problem I’m just about to explain to you, but it pretty helped me understand the range of capabilities of the Laptop I have at hand. Infact it is from the Doc that I learnt that my HDD should be set as Type 6 though it never worked still. You will find a question in RED in the attached Doc alongside the model I thought was close to mine.
So, what I want is a procedure to follow in setting up my Hard Disk in such a manner that I can install an OS I’m familiar with, at least an Ms Dos OS, or any other you may recommend for the SuperSport 286 System. Currently, I have tried to boot from an Ms Dos Ver 6.6 Diskette, with an aim of identifying the HDD from the FDISK utility, but I got an Error message of “Non-System Disk.” Note that this is the Diskette (No. 1) with the Dos start up files (Ver 6.22). The cheapest recovery procedure would be preferable but what I want most is to continue USING the 1988 thing whether I’ll have to change certain things. I don’t intend to recover any Data from the HDD, and I don’t want to throw it away until I’m sure it’s not recoverable. I had installed the same Dos OS into another computer sometimes last month so I don’t believe that the diskette is faulty too. I have also been CAREFUL to change the CMOS “Boot from” option depending on whether it’s the Floppy, HDD or Floppy then HDD. Recall that only the “Boot directly to MFM-200 Screen” seems to work so far: And the commands executable in it’s prompt (B, C, D… M, S etc) don’t look like they can help to solve any Computing problems, except the “H” command which performs basic arithmetic and outputs somehow intelligible results. What worried me most was the fact that the HDD I’m talking about, if I wasn’t wrong in identifying it (after opening the case), has an even smaller interface/ribbon cable connecting it to the Main Board than that of the Internal FDD – Floppy Drive that is. Then, it’s encased in a rubber/tube-some covering as well as being the same size or smaller to that of the FDD. I thought it was the Hard Disk coz I’ve even learnt that this is the typical size of the HDD of the SuperSport 286 Model. I learnt this from the Doc I’ve attached to this mail. The HDD doesn’t have any other connector (like say, a separate power cable) leading to/from it except the single Ribbon cable connecting it to some intermediate apparently add-on card which then connects to the Main Board. Note that my Model is not the 286e. One more thing I wasn’t comfortable with was some 2 connectors on the main board, actually not two but 3, similar to those that connect modern Hard Disks in Desktop PCs to their respective Main Boards. These 3 connectors (I guess C16 and C17, the 3rd I can’t recall unless I check), were not connected to anything! Yet the HDD has Ribbon Cable smaller than that of an Ordinary Desktop PC FDD. Anyway, I didn’t figure out that they really had to be connected somewhere. I also didn’t figure out where a provisional Expansion Bus would be fitted on the Board, despite the fact that it has been provided for at the rear side of the PC Laptop, I mean the Main Board doesn’t have any extra EISA/MCA slots leave alone ISA/PCI slots as fitted in modern Mother Boards. By the way did I mention to you that the System Board was manufactured at around 1988, guess it’s among the first to be released by Zenith Data Systems before they merged with Hewlett Packard in 1989. It’s not that I know much about that, Afterall I was only Five years then. So, what I was saying is that the CMOS TIME and DATE keeps on resetting itself to 1st of January 1988 every time I start this Laptop thing! This happens even when I’ve not removed the Removable DC Backup Battery at the back of the ‘thing’ – the Battery Case, manufactured in Japan is a Model ZA – 180 - 65. Could it be that the Bios has expired or does it all have anything to do with the lack of a Bootable Os in the HDD? Really, I don’t think this could ever have anything to do with the HDD. Infact, the Setup accepts dates ranging from 1988 to 2099.
While I’m afraid to here that I’d replace the Bios alone, feel free to recommend to me any sort of Devices/Accessories ( Full Range ) you feel would render my Laptop Competent and Intelligent just like modern PCs. If you trust it’s worthwhile to replace almost everything including the Mainboard, let me know. I’d be grateful too if you sent me details (manufacturer or component typical ID) that will help me identify specific components on the Board such as the Bios and other important components I may need to swap/change. The Laptop has an RJ 11 port mounted on an add-on card so if you feel like it’s possible to troubleshoot it REMOTELY from my Room’s Computer running on a Windows XP Professional Platform, just let me know. I’m a PRO when it comes to crimping Direct/Cross-Over cables for connecting such DTE Equipments. The only other challenge I got was to use an 8-Wired UTP cable to connect on one side to the Laptop (RJ 11-4 Pins) and the other side to connect to my Desktop PC (RJ 45-8 Pins). The latter connector wasn’t an issue since the UTP Cat 5E has 8 wires equivalent to its 8 Pins. The other side is the problem. I however did away with thinking about it all when I failed to figure out how I could access the apparently dead Laptop from my XP Desktop PC.

Lots of Regards.

I just noticed it's in the FAQ section, I don't usually check here.
muita - it's not a good idea to post your email address, I'd remove it if I were you.
As for your attachments issue, you can't attach any old file and it has to be under 128kb in size.
Try compressing/zipping it and then attaching it.
If that contains the question, it may be best to copy and paste it, it may take a few posts if it is long though.
Oh, and welcome to the forums.Oh. My. Goodness.

Oh. My. Goodness.

Any chance of breaking that post down into bullet points?!
. . . it was different when I replied to it . . . that's a beast of a post.
More than a little hard to read too, because of the sheer length.

Scanning through, it seems that they want to get an OS they recognize onto this laptop, manufactured in 1988.
They also want to know how to upgrade it.
I'm not so sure this is worth spending any time or effort on, it is almost 20 years old.
You could sell it as an antique.
Maybe something like DOS would work with it.
That's if I'm understanding this correctly, it is rather an enormous post.
At least we don't have the problem of too little info here . . .Muita, are there any computer museums over there in Kenya? Since you're familiar with all Windows operating systems, even Vista, you must be familiar with fairly modern peronal computers. And, therefore, you know that 286 laptop is very obsolete.

I once had a 286 desktop. I got rid of it years ago. I suspect nearly all other forum viewers, like me, are just not inclined to try to comprehend your very long post and delve into such old technology.

Had a Compaq Pesario S5322cc with a bad hard drive. Cloned the old-to-new drive with Acronis 9 no problem. Found out that the new drive was infested with viruses / trojans and spyware. (You're thinking.."why didn't he CLEAN if first before cloning the drive?"...) Well... that drive was just about dead so I had to take anything I could get Anyway, I tried to do a System Restore from both the restore PARTITION and the CD set that had been made long before the hdd went bad. Neither worked. I got an error MESSAGE after trying the restore partition stating that there was a "configuration error" and support needed to be contacted. When trying the restore cd's they said that this was not the right set for this particular computer. Called Compaq and the tech said that the BIOS needed to be flashed. Also said that sometimes the cloning software will not permit completing the recovery.
I tried 2 different drives both with the same problem.

Not-So-Bestbuy wants $69 to diagnose the problem and then another $30 to FLASH the BIOS.

Has anyone ever come ACROSS something like this?
