Okay here is my situation...
About three months ago.. my laptop a Dell Inspirion was able to RUN Lord of the Rings Online at the highest settings with no falutiness or choppiness.. it ran the game PERFECTLY and smoothly.... a month later my computer just stopped working.. blue screen.. so my mother (an IT manager) reinstalled my ENTIRE computer from the ground up and everything seemed to work for awhile... a month later i had to do it again... and now the computer cant run LOTRO or any game at that matter... no videos.. audio is really choppy.. i tried to DEFRAG it and i have AVG protecting my computer... please help me out here.. i want to play LOTRO again and just use my computer again... thanksWhat are you doing before you get a bsod?I dont get the BSOD anymore. My computer is only choppy... slow... both video and audio wise.... How much free space on your drive ?
When is the last time you did the REGULAR maintenence such as diskclean/defrag ? ?or virus scan's and such.Have you installed the latest drivers?

I have been having problems with ms paint I used it alot in desiging websites since it is free compared to the price of photoshop, I had windows 98 and when I would change the color of text it would fill in all the text, now that I have windows xp with a flat panel MONITOR, the text does not completely fill with my choice of color and looks pixalated, any help would be greatly appreicated, I have searched endlessly and I am getting frustrated.
I can't really help with ms paint. I wonder if you've ever tried GIMP? I've never really used it, but it may be a workable alternative for you. Older versions of GIMP will work on Win98, but they are not supported.

i have a dell dimension 2400 with windows XP home edition. i have a graphics/video driver from NVIDIA....geforce MX4000. i need to find an update for this driver that will add 64 MB of display memory. i currently HAVE only 64 MB and my games seem to need 124 MB. is there a FREE online update available? There's no such thing as a vid card update that will double your RAM...what you have is what it is.you need to get a graphics card that's got 128 mb or greater amount of memory coming with it. You can't double video card memory WITHOUT getting a new card. Bleh...

I just checked out your machine, and that REALLY wont do much in the way of games.

Memory is hardware. Updates can't make it bigger or smaller. An update fixes bugs, and might make things run faster, but they can't physically alter the machine!

You will have to buy and install a new video card. This is what you call a hard ware upgrade.

The 2400 only has PCI slots to install a new card into. PCI is bottom the the barrel though, so don't expect to much gain.canyourunit.com

you can check out how WELL your pc runs but celeron processor? And a PCI only graphics card? That's kind of low end. Since you can't change the computer, disregard some of the above complains.

My laptop was about €1,400 which is about $1,860.Mine Cost a little over $1,500.00 back in 1996.The first computer my family owned was £50, back in 1996.
The first computer I owned, which I saved up for over 2 years, was around £1500 (my laptop).Got my Dell Optiplex GX150 for free(some school program)

But now my Optiplex GX270(just the tower) was $280my 286, 386, 486, pentium, k6-2, Pentium 133 Mhz laptop, and thinkpad (75Mhz) were all given to me by my computer science teacher back in HIGH school.

I really dont know why they would be rated so high. They are MADE out of very low quality PARTS. The only reason you see them so much is because they are cheap. And they are cheap because they have terrible quality parts. All the people with old dells may say Hey! My dells old and still going! Well thats because dell used to be a little better then they are now. They are horrible.but in any case, to be honest, I think that if Dell made such crappy stuff, they'd be out of business by now. And if the quality wasn't decent for its job, businesses and schools would have jumpshiped a long long time AGO and went for HP or a different manufacturer.

Hey EVERYBODY. This is the first time using the forum. I have been having some trouble with my computer lately and I want to SEE if you can help me out. The answer is probably basic, but I haven't FIGURED it out. I have a music file that I want to delete, but when I went to delete it from the folder, it says the file was in use. I then copied it from that folder, onto my desktop (I was trying to BRING it over into the Recycle Bin but I missed it ). I have no clue how to delete this, and what could possibly be using the file. I shut down Morpheus, the downloading system I use, incase that was the problem. Still didn't delete. Shut down Windows Media Player, and it still will not delete. I want to figure out if there actually is another program that is at all involved with that file, but I don't know how to figure out if anything is using it. If anybody knows how to delete it or how to figure out if something is using the file, please help me. Thanks.Have you tried about deleting it in Safe Mode? You could ALSO try Pocket KillBox.

I'm curious...are you unable to delete this file even after restarting your computer? There's a possibility that it could be infected. If you use Process Explorer, you can do a search for the file and see what program it's tied to.I tried Safe Mode, still nothing. I tried restarting, many times. Still Nothing. I'll download Process Explorer, try that. My guess is that it probably is infected or a virus or something, but I'll try the Process Explorer first.

Some one was messing around with my COMPUTER and restarted in safe mode and for the life of me I can not remember how to get it back to normal. HELP How about just rebooting it?I did reboot STILL coming up in safe mode and page that i can choose to the mode does not come up.Tap F8 repeatedly when starting and choose to start Windows normally.Perhaps it's a stretch, but we could try taking a look at a safeboot file.

When I TURNED on my computer today my monitor didnt turn on. I tried turning it on later and everything worked fine, except i got a message: ˝CPU unworkable or has been CHANGED. press F1 to continue or del to enter setup.˝ I pressed F1 and everything was fine for 5 minutes and then my monitor shut down but the computer didnt. This HAPPENS every time i turn on the computer. I've never had problems with my computer because it's relatively new. Can anyone help?

My goal is to get a Computer Science degree and begin a computer-created career, and hopefully get a nice place with my girlfriend. If possible, I'm going to try to get some kind of repair or support job (or any job, really) in the meantime so I can maybe make things happen a little sooner.

I remanufacture Equip. that is 20 years old in tech.
The softwear to program machine is an MSDOS program, that uses MSDOS 2.11 or earleyer. The EPSON comp. that were used to program mach. have died. I have been trying to program with DELL Latitude, that boots to windows 98 and then SHIFT to c drive and program from there. It works but do not have all the functions of program, any sugestions on how to make this much easer and GET all the functions of program.

Hey guys Now all of you have finally convinced me that utorrent is safe and noone is gonna hack me etc , so I'll give it a try, but I don't really have anything to DOWNLOAD!!!
I wanted to download that free game CALLED TrackMania , but it was talking HOURS and hours and more hours to download (here ) then I read this thread and thought I could use utorrent for downloading, So from my understanding till now, utorrent is like a download manger.

Hope it helps or else I'm gonna remove it from my comp today.I guess you could call it a download manager but it's downloading from different peers(seeders). In other words, a part of your file may be from another computer and another part from another computer.

My OS is installed in C: 80gb PATA

Since the harddrive was newly installed I had like 150 gb of free space.
And I had no security programs installed after I formatted.

Can you try to connect this harddrive to other computer and see if it will have problems on that computer..

The SATA drive if it had consecutive errors may have been dropped back in to PIO mode...
This would explain the sluggishness...

Kip, I believe the time shown is how long the server has taken to load the page and serve it, not how long it's taken to download.

My daughter is taking summer classes at a local University i don't know diddly about COMPUTERS she said hers wont work so i need a quick fix. While kebber's recommendation is a good one...as far as the price goes...and Toshiba's are dependable...I'd tend to stay away from the Celeron processors...and see what you can find from Dell, Gateway, or HP for that matter.

I'd look into a system offering at least a Pentium 4 processor...or Dual Core (great for multitasking).

Most base notebooks will suffice...but you may want to add a good Office software suite...she'll probably need it in school.

Without GOING into too many specifics...I'd tend to go with a Gateway...or HP...Dell's notebooks are dependable, but their support isn't really up to snuff.

I think a good base system...with an OPTION to include a good Office Suite will SUIT her needs just fine.

You MEAN all files aren't being opened now?No they open its just that I CANT open the one I was told to download again. Going to get the file ELSE where, but the pc I'm at is the sever to the others an where most of the stuff is DOWNLOADED.

i am using windows vista when i go to some web pages it tell me the web page can not be found or it is taking to long to respond and these are web pages i go to on a regular basis so i know they work....i can access them from work i just get to them from home.....my COMPUTER is a hp it has a gig and a half of memory i have not been able to get into some web pages for at least a week.....i have done EVERYTHING from reloading my computer to deleting all cookies, temp internet files and nothing seems to help.... the following is one of the error messages i get!!!!!

I’m STARTING university next year and I have no idea what kind of laptop to get. I’ve never had a laptop before and I’m not sure where to begin as I embark on my epic quest to find one. I’m taking biology, and not completely sure what school related THINGS I’ll need it for, but school is my primary concern and I need a laptop that will be good for that. As for non-academic uses, I’ll probably be doing some photo and possibly video editing. And the usual internet things, like Facebook, music downloads, msn, ect. I’d like something that doesn’t cost a fortune, and won’t be too heavy to carry around. And I’m not going to lie, I do care how it looks… although that will not the deciding factor. So can anyone give me a suggestion? I talk to a lot of people...everyday about recommending laptops...PCs...and such.

Where are they?I knew it would erase all of my FILES and programs -- I didn't really have any on this LAPTOP.

I have gone through the process. But now it says something like...

...or something. I looked on the website and this has something to do with commands in DOS for Windows 98.

I tried writing in the command.com command, fdisk /mbr (or whatever the website wrote) but none of them work. The laptop originally had Windows XP and now it says it's starting Win98, is this an issue? I think I may need to just purchase an entirely new hard DRIVE. (-_-)At the A: prompt type in C: and hit Enter...
At the C: prompt type in cd\Windows and hit Enter...
At the C:\Windows prompt type in Win and hit Enter....

If this does'nt get you into Win98 something went wrong with the install....

What makes you suspect a hard drive issue ? ?Didn't work. : \ Because the command.com thing is missing or CORRUPTED I think it can't understand any command.

The thing is, the laptop USED to have Windows XP and now it's trying to start Windows 98. Shouldn't the recovery disk be trying to recover Windows XP?

I thought it was the hard drive because of something I read on this website. It was a link off of the Invalid System Disk error.

I'm at a loss. : (Not neccessarily...if the laptop shipped originally with Win98 then when you run the restore CD you are going back to Win98.
This was the main reason for the STOP message i posted above.

Do you have an MS XP CD ? ?I very much understood what I was doing when I did it -- that I'd lose all of my data, files, customizations, updates, etc. I wanted this. SOMEBODY deleted any important file out of c:/Windows files so I needed to restore Windows to its originality. I didn't really have any files on that laptop -- I use this one.

The laptop came with Windows XP. It has a sticker on the laptop that says "Designed for Windows XP." I used XP until I used the recovery disk. I am using the disk that laptop came with -- it's the same brand and same model of laptop.

I ran the recovery disk and it seemed to be working just fine. I agreed to delete all of my files, to continue and when it finished it said it was "Starting Windows 98." The reason that confuses me is because I originally had XP. I restarted and it said "Invalid System Disk" over and over. I came on here and learned to boot the HDD. I did so. I went through the recovery disk again. Now it says "Starting Windows 98" and something like "The following file is missing or corrupted C:/windows/command.com A>" or something like that. So I entered in "C:\", I entered "fdisk /mbr (or whatever this website suggested," and something direct about copying the A drive to the C drive (the disk to the hdd). To no avail. It just says the same thing over and over.

Sometimes when I restart a message keeps replaying that says something about Realtek -- if I restart it goes back to the command.com error message.

I have no idea why the recovery disk didn't work, why it's starting Windows 98 and how, if there is any way, to fix the command.com file.

I'm not completely ignorant as to how a computer operates, how Windows works, what DOS is, etc. I just don't know what to do from here -- I'm trying to avoid a pricey repair.You should contact the Laptop manuf. and request an XP Recovery CD if that did in fact come with XP...
What exactly does it say on the CD you have now ? ?

Most manuf. will send a new one and only charge shipping...

I lost the original. I went to another forum where I had it working, and downloaded it by right-clicking on the avatar itself. This resulted in a file called index.PHP.

Here are the steps for everyone.

1)Upload the picture you want as avatar to photobucket.
2)There you'll get an option to edit etc the image, click on skip this step for now.
3)when the image is displayed there, you'll see 4 CODES given below the image.
4)Click on the 2nd code (DIRECT link) and copy it.
5)Go to edit profile on CH and check the 'I have my own pic' option.
6)Delete the http thing given there and Paste the link copied from photobucket there.
7)Save changes to profile.

On CH it uploads small gif images but the larger ones don't work that way, so I just do that photobucket thing instead, I figured it out when I really wanted to put up that wolf and hand images, I think it depends on the size of the image.

I read Flexplay Entertainment is currently producing self destructing DVD's again. This is described at CD Freaks.

Just wonder if people renting dvd's (e.g. in the USA) WOULD really bother, as I don't think we get such DVD's down under in New Zealand. Anyone USED them and what do you think?Ugh. I have an acer Extensa 4420 that is 2 MONTHS old. It operated fine at my work today. When I brought it home and powered up, the keyboard, touchpad, and sound are all dead. My USB mouse works fine and everything seems to open and close properly. Any ideas?What happened before the problem started?

What symptoms?

I have no keyboard, touchpad, or sound control. Battery level does not display. USB mouse works. Device Manager shows errors for Generic PnP monitor, both processors, ATI I/O Communications Processor LPC Controller, High Definition Audio Controller, and UMBus Root Bus Enumerator. All have the error "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware (Code 37)."

As of today I'll no longer be RESTORING user accounts and/or their post counts for users who HASTILY delete their accounts. If you get upset and/or want to take a break instead of deleting the account simply don't use it.

Press "some key" to ENTER setup.
Press "some key", and you'll get to BIOS.
Look for "boot order", or simply "boot". You'll see something like this:

Make sure, that your boot order reads:
- floppy drive
- CD drive
- hard disk

after you get like 2 small popping sounds and it restarts again back to that page.

I have 6 computers set up for automated FTP by using a simple batch file. The last computer is giving me problems when I try and transfer a file using "PUT". I am able to connect to maunaully and even log in with user and pass. When I type:

FTP>PUT C:\BACKUP\TEST.BAK

I receive "connection closed by remote host", no error code or anything. Any IDEAS?If other computers are connecting to that same computer that's causing errors for one of your computers I'd GUESS it WOULD have something to do with that one computer of course. My first assumption would be a firewall. Try temporarily DISABLING all firewalls and see if issue persists.

I need some advice from you experienced folks.

A few years ago my son bought me Norton Ghost 2000 as a Christmas gift. I BEGAN using it regularly. One day my OS hiccupped for some unknown reason and the computer refused to boot. I reloaded everything from the latest Ghost backup and it worked fine. A couple of years later, the OS hiccupped again (cause unknown). When I WENT to reload my latest backup, Ghost couldn’t read from the fourth CD in the backup set. I went to a previous backup, and again it could not read from one of the diskettes in each backup. So, off to the XP Pro installation disks and a fresh installation with lots of stuff lost.

I have a 20 GB internal disk, and my granddaughter gave me a 160 GB eternal hard drive for last Christmas. The stuff I store on it has not great value.

The main problem with my Ghost 2000 is that it will only write an image file to a floppy or CD. It seems like Ghost doesn’t see the external drive, maybe because it’s USB connected. I asked Norton if the newer versions of Ghost would write the image to the external drive, but I never got an answer.

Could some of you who are more experienced than I am help me with these questions?

1) Am I thinking logically to want to backup to the external hard drive?

2) Do the newer versions of Norton Ghost write an Image Copy to another hard drive?

3) Can you recommend different software that is comparable in price? (Maybe I’ll drop a Christmas hint.)

4) If so, will the software boot up into DOS for backing/reloading in case the OS screws up and I can’t boot up?

Sorry this was so long. I APPRECIATE any help.

Not sure it this is the right place but:

My computer refuses to wake up from SLEEP if it has been sleeping for more than a few seconds. It POWERS up, but that's as far as it gets; there is nothing on the monitor and the graphics card fan blows non-stop (it's supposed to stop after a few seconds). I have to power off and reboot for it to work again. I only have this problem for S3 (suspend to RAM). S1 works fine.
