Solve : RAM- is more better??

Answer»

Hi all. New pc Tower with Intel E7300 2.66Ghz core 2 Duo, G-B EP31-DS3L P31 MB, 2x A-Data 1 GB DDR2 800 RAM, ASUS PCI-E 512MB 8400GS, SATA W.D. 500GB HDD, LG SATA 22xDVD RW (x2 two), Coolmaster box and power supply, 22" LCD SCREEN and MS Windows XP Home edition OS.
My question is would 2 more GB of RAM (2x1GB) be an advantage or not. I am happy with system and don't do GAMING. Just wondering if the upgrade of about $50 for the 2 sticks of RAM worth it. Thanks. With a 32 bit Windows OS, you can't USE more than about 3 GB so you'd be wasting one of those sticks, but at $50 you may as well do it.
Thanks for reply. The EP31-DS3L cannot handle more than 2gb of memory... Getting an extra 2gb of ram (increasing to 3gb) would not be a possibility.Quote from: michaewlewis on November 17, 2008, 11:46:58 AM

Don't go by that Kingston website. Gigabyte GA-EP31-DS3L has four memory sockets, accepting up to 4 GB DDR2-667, DDR2-800 or DDR2-1066 memories under dual channel configuration.

Solve : corrupted javascript?

Answer»

I play a cryptogram game via a website, but lately the LETTERS I type are not the letters I GET. I don't notice any type of error MESSAGES. It only happens on this particular SITE. I have tried to re-log into the site, I've run virus scans, and even restored my computer to a previous date when the site was working. I am told it is a javascript error and that I NEED to reload the application, but I don't know how to do that.I managed to fix this problem by simply re-installing IE.

If you mean it needs to be synced on a regular basis with the desktop you could look into programs such as SyncBack...or here's an idea, do a google search. I'm sure you'll find many tools that suite your needs.Allway Sync http://allwaysync.com/ is a NICE program. You can set it to sync automatically when the flash drive is inserted.

Solve : What Windows problem have you been never able to resolve??

Answer»

I never really understanded why there was a apple advertise on my Background when I bought my PCQuote from: computeruler on July 18, 2008, 11:14:10 AM

ya the time syncronization is one for me too
Check to see if some local security policy, or network policy if in a domain, or program is blocking udp. Time synch is done with udp..
Well, I did resolve it- but it stood as a hurdle for over 4 years.

Not strictly a windows problem, but rather a problem getting at a windows feature. I could NOT, for the life of me, figure out how to show the right-click context menu in my program. I did manage to get it "SORT of" working, but after the first-click showing the menu, the second one would GPF.

After over ten or twelve re-writes of the code, I managed to actually get some robust code working that can show the right-click menu for any file. It has been successfully integrated into my Object based File handling library, BCFile.

More Aside from Explorer Fiobles previously described, of course-

Probably more annoying to me, is getting older games working. For example- Need for Speed 2 SE, High Stakes, etc. Oh wait- I solved those too. darn it! Let's see- unresolved... unresolved

Darn it! Can't think of anymore right now, but I know I have many...

Oh well. I know! I'll mindlessly ramble at the one poster whose been completely ignored!

I figured out how to make internet explorer safer

ANSWER: download firefox
*clap* congratulations, you successfully made a comment that made no sense. What your saying is analogous to saying,

"I figured out how to make my hand stop hurting!"

"How's that?"

"Oh, it was easy! I just cut my whole arm off!"

Using firefox is on the whole Safer, but firefox never lends it's additional security to Internet Explorer, and so doesn't, in any way, make IE any safer. If somebody were to install Firefox and continue to run IE, would that make IE safer? NO.

I figured out why windows 95 goes to BSOD so much.

Answer: Run over 3 programs at once and find out.
that really did make me mad as a kid.

Again... this is about unsolved issues, second off, we're talking about machines actually capable of having the issue non-existent. Running windows 95 on a 4MB 386 notwithstanding. I've used windows 95, my friend, and it was much more robust then it is made out to be. In fact- more so then windows 98, since they integrated IE into 98, but not necessarily all versions of 95.
I figured out how to have a quick responsive system on an ancient computer with low RAM.

I have an XP Pro, AMD Athlon, 1.2 GHz, 768 MB RAM, and it boots fast. I reinstall OS each year and have learned how to install, especially when there are service packs involved. The method requires that you have a router, your program setups on EXTERNAL hard drive or disk, disks for SP2 and SP3 (I got SP2 free from Microsoft and made my own SP3 dvd disk), and you are careful. Do the install; do not install any programs, including security. Install ERUNT. Upgrade to SP2 without installing any programs, and do same with SP3. During this you are protected by router and native firewall. Install your firewall (remember to turn off native Windows firewall.). Install your anti virus. Programs ask you to exit from any programs that you have running; you should make a copy of the registry with ERUNT before each install or a System Restore point. Install just the programs that you actually need, especially avoid the so-called shortcut programs. Example are programs to access settings that you can use the native controls to set or adjust. If a program has a 'portable' version, one without an installer, use it. Many of the programs at Microsoft's Sysinternals do not have installers. There are some good programs there. SIW is a good inventory program for your system without an installer. The best antirootkits IceSword, GMER, and Rootkit Unhooker, one of the best antispyware on DEMAND scanners, ewido antispyware microscanner, does not have an installer. One antirootkit, one antispyware, and one anti Trojan on demand scanner is all that's needed. Many programs try to or do install to start with Windows. The only ones that need to do this are the firewall and anti virus, perhaps encryption like PGP. Don't install too many extra font, pretty icons to replace the native ones, or eye candy. Turn off all native eye candy except for (see image). You may see other suggestions about which ones to keep by Googling. Turn off system sounds. Do you really need to hear music when the system boots up or shuts down? If you create permanent files store them on disks or external hard drive. You don't need to load them. There are tweaks to speed up boot, but they are beyond newbie or intermediate suggestions. Others here will have other suggestions, or differences with mine, to speed up boot. Listen to them and decide.

Each year I use fewer programs, less duplication and crossover, and fewer visual effects. I almost forgot, keep only the pictures that you really use often in My Pictures folder; they are loaded each time the system starts up. The pictures in the My Pictures folder are also used as wallpaper. You may wish to remove some of the jpegs in C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper. I only have nine there. Some I removed for aesthetic reasons.

I don't believe that any of the above are dangerous tweaks, if they may be called that. I have a quick responsive system because of the above on an -in computer terms- ancient system. The only windows problem I was never able to resolve was one day my built-in mics of my laptop stopped working as soon as I plugged in a different mic into the mic in jack (i had never done it before up to this point.)

Windows did something that disabled my built in mics.

Go figure.Quote from: SaintSatinStain on November 18, 2008, 07:46:15 PM

errr- that isn't ancient- older, maybe. Refer to the XP minimum and recommended requirements. That far surpasses the recommended minimum speed of a 233Mhz Pentium 2 or equivalent.

If that's ancient- what was my old XP machine? (which booted in just over a minute, BTW)

AMD K6-2 350 Mhz
512MB RAM
2GB HD +8GB second HD (both fat32 for speed)
XP SP2
ATI Radeon 7000VE
Creative Sound blaster PCI

My trick was disabling many of my services, and no Antivirus, for example.

Ahh, which reminds me of a problem I never was able to solve-

With that old computer- the Radeon 7000 Failed terribly, yellow screens after 3d mode screwed up, etc.

So I bought and attempted to installed the graphics card I'm currently using in this computer- a BFG GEFORCE FX 5500.

BSOD. regardless- any 3d mode. BSOD. tried everything.

Same thing happened with EVERY card I tried AIW 9000, Geforce FX 6600. etc...

Solve : Noisy pictures?

Answer»

Hi all,
I have been through the ringer on this one. I am an amateur photographer and I use Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge on almost a daily basis. About a month ago, I opened one of my images of a silhouette. Instantly I was struck by the noise it contained, particularly where the colour transitions were. In other words, there are thin circles of noise radiating outward from the sun itself instead of having a smooth transition from one tone to the next. Of course I began to inspect closely all of my other images and started to see the same thing to varying degrees. I had my PC in the shop for five days while the technician tried everything including three different graphics cards, reinstalling Windows XP, PS CS3, etc, running things from his HARD drive, etc. I have replaced the power supply with a 460 W unit, replaced the monitor, power cords, etc. And still have this issue. What's really interesting is that it also happens on the tech guys PC, but did not show up on my friends until today (using those same images saved to an SD card). I have had the camera into the camera tech guys (Nikon D80 with Nikon lenses) and they say it is fine. Final clue: When I saved some of the images to an SD card, I brought it back home and tried it again on my PC. No noise. I looked at the original from my hard drive and, lots of noise. I went back to the SD card version of the same image that a minute ago had no noise and, yup, tons of noise. I have had this problem for over a month now and am ready to lose it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Paul.Paul,
First off Welcome Aboard !

The monitor; vid card and camera have all been replaced and checked out, so that leaves the remaining as common denominators:
The Flash card/cards...how many were used here and how old are they ?
The hard drive...again how old and are there any other problems/issues with the drive that you know of ?
The Photoshop software itself...can you re-install it ?

Run disk clean and defrag for the hard drive.
Re-install Photoshop
The flash card...still more info needed here as if it's more than one card it's happening on then it may be the card reader itself.

Just a few things to start on look forward to an update. As a photog and image worker myself this is an INTRIGUING problem to say the least.

I don't have any real answers but am thinking that the image files must (in theory) be intact (not corrupt) themselves as I'd have thought you'd either get a CRC type error or incomplete image etc ... as against an all over noise effect.

To have that makes me think or wonder if there is a software aspect at all - and I don't think you mentioned file types. If this was on JPG files then wondering if the decompression is causing trouble. So - wonder what occurs with BMP or TIFF - the former in particular as that will have no COMPRESSION. Just thinkin out loud really.DO NOT SAVE THE FILES after opening-

it sounds like your computer is running at a lower colour depth then the photos. when you open then, they exhibit the SYMPTOMS- you subsequently save it. viewing that same file on another computer will exhibit the same problem.

Also- file format, as ChrisXPPro stated, could be an issue. GIF- for example, would cause this.Hi guys,
First, thanks for all the great responses. Thus far I have tried what patio recommended and ran a disk clean on all drives (there are three). That worked for a while but seemed to stop working. I purged all Photoshop caches and it went back to working. Now it is back to not working. I defragmented drive C and am now in the process of doing the same for D. All files are RAW format (NEF) and have never given me this sort of problem before. The problem is occuring with all images whether they have been saved to hard drive, copied to hard drive or are viewed directly from the original card. I think there is some small progress here as it was momentarilly resolved. I am not sure what the process is, but I know that when any of my software opens a RAW image (or JPEG for that matter) there is usually a moment where the image looks completely pixelated and then it kind of "settles" in and becomes clear. That step doesn't happen anymore. Hope that makes sense. Again, I appreciate all your input. Cheers, Paul. How much RAM on this machine ? ?

DLoad and run MemTest one evening before bedtime...let it run overnite. Just for the halibut....

Solve : ISP question?

I have SOLVED the missing driver problem! I have FOUND the solution google'ing:

"From the device manager, right click on the PCI simple communication controller, choose properties, click on Details tab, highlight “PCI\VEN….”, and copy it by USING Ctrl+C keys. Open google.com and paste the copied thing by using Ctrl+V keys. Delete everything from “&SUBSYS” to the last and search. This will give you what model the communication controller is and then you can download the driver."

Worked like a charm

Now only the freezing is left to figure out armis -

Solve : What to buy?

Answer»

Hi I'm looking at buying a laptop.

I have been told it is best to buy
one that has a Core 2 Duo, not a Core Duo. For running Windows Vista, at least 2GB of RAM, and for Windows XP, at least
1GB of RAM.
Stay well away from Core Duos and Pentium Dual Cores,
because they are not that fast plus they're cheap and nasty.

What advice is best

Quote

Stay well away from Core Duos and Pentium Dual Cores,

In my opinion, they're fine.

If I were getting a new laptop, I would look for something with a large HD capacity, at least 1GB RAM, Graphics Card with at least 256mb VRAM, Dual Core (or Core 2 Duo), with a native resolution of 1024X768.

Have you already picked a computer?no not yet seeking advice first
What's your budget, and what do you want the laptop to do?2500.00 approx.

I intend to use this one for work, all work is done online with the server. and I move around alot.

I don't need all the cons for games..................
I do need it to read most memory cards, music (can't work without that).

Basically a good comp, working online 24/7 handling 100+ emails daily.

Good storage as there are a lot of construction drawings and photos that are downloaded daily.

Speed, reliability, good storage, wireless..........
If that's $2500, you'll have no problems. In fact, you can get a great laptop for your PURPOSES for ≈$1200 - $1400. You've gotten some good spec advice; based on what you have said, I would supplement it as follows:

a) I'm a fan of HP.

b) I'd opt for a Core 2 Duo, 2.4 Ghz or GREATER.

c) Nvidia or ATI discrete graphics with 512 MB of memory.

d) Vista (I don't think you'll be ABLE to get XP), any version Home Premium or greater depending on your needs.

e) 4 GB RAM memory.

f) Hard drives: 1 or 2, your choice; but I'd recommend them to be HP ProtectSmart or equivalent "drop proof" spec; if battery life not important, get 7200 rpm DRIVE(s).

g) Wireless "N" capability.

h) You didn't mention battery life or portability or screen size: 1) I'd get the "largest" battery size offered, 2) portability (small, light) will cost a premium, 3) screen size is up to you, but, subject to portability constraint, I'd look at 17" and not less that 15."

Best of luck!

Hi there,

I ended up getting, a Hp Pavillion dv5-1045tx
Intel core 2 Duo processor P84000 (2.26 GHZ)
15.4" diagonal WXGA high-definition brightview widescreen display
320GB (5400RPM) hard drive
2048MB DDR2 Sdram (1Dimm)
intel wifi link 5100 network connection & bluetooth
lightscribe super multi 8X dvd+rw with dual layer support
6-cell lithium-Ion battery
HP quickplay
HP Mobile remote control
5-in-1 digital media reader
express card / 54PC card slot
nVidia Geforce 9600M GT with 512 MB DDR2 dedicated graphics memory
Windows Vista @ home premium (32bit) with service pack 1
Hp webcam
expansion port 3

I actually was out sourcing comps when you posted your reply, thank you....

I hope what I bought is ok guys......................

Tabby

Looks nice

Strongly suggest that you upgrade to 4 GB of RAM if you can; Vista loves RAM!

Enjoy! Thanks for the advice and help, I'll opt to upgrade the RAM as you suggested.

many thanks once again

Solve : Monitor always shuts off?

Answer»

Hey I'm having a problem with my monitor. Well there is 2 problems. The first one is that the top half of my monitor is darker than the bottom half. Like a lightbulb died inside but that doesnt matter, i can still see fine. The major problem is that at random times like every 30 seconds it turns off and i have to click my sleep button to turn it back on. SO i think my computer is going to sleep but why constantly? and even when im on clicking and typing stuff it still turns off.

Can anyone help me pleaseCheck your Power Saving options in Control Panel...
Sounds like the monitor is getting ready to head South.everything in my power savings in control panel is fine. you know how like when a monitor goes to sleep, the power button or a light on the monitor turns orange or some other color or STARTS flashing and U gotta MOVE the mouse or press a key to bring it back. its not the same. my green light which means its on stays like that after it turns off and i cant just press some key. i have to press my sleep button.

and even at different times it doesnt turn back on when i click the sleep button and i have to click the power button on my monitor but than everything freezes. yeah dude it sounds like your monitor is Dieing.

Do you have another monitor you can hookup and see if the problem persists?

Or check to see if the monitor works elsewhere.yea but sometimes if freezes...

maybe its my PC?

oh and btw im new here and im surprised to see the username chubby wasnt taken lol...

yeah but seriously, why would my computer freeze at times. Like when I try to click caps lock on my monitor, the light under caps lock on the top right corner doesnt come up and it jsut stays like that. So, summary, Other monitors don't work on this computer but they work fine on other computers.
The monitor turns off after 30 seconds.
The keyboard isn't working properly.

Anything else we should know?meh NEVERMIND.

Solve : How do drivers and proxys work??

Answer»

Hey Dudes can you guys simply explain to me

Proxys

Web proxys

And DRIVERS?

Im TRYING to learn but cant get a simple answer...im pretty shure that proxys go through like another server and drivers have code that like link the thing to the computer so the computer knows what to so with it i thinkProxy server is more, or less like a router, only more powerful in features:

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]Driver is a piece of software, which allows communication between any computer program, and a device.
For instance, M$ Word talks to printer driver in order to print whatever you typed in.
It's like a cab passenger, TELLING the cab driver to turn right. Driver's brain allows driver's hands to turn steering wheel to the right. The PLURAL of "proxy" is "proxies".
thanks for the simple explanations.

So lemme get this straight Ms word will tell the DRiver to print?Quote from: !~*:.Pink Floyd.:*~! on September 23, 2008, 01:59:31 PM

thanks for the simple explanations.

So lemme get this straight Ms word will tell the DRiver to print?

Yes. Any software program that needs to print will use the printer driver....and the driver will translate the program instructions into instructions for the hardware, in this case, the printer.Quote from: Dias de verano on September 23, 2008, 02:08:46 PM

Thanks Dias. Imagine you are typing on your keyboard.
How do all the electrical signals get to the computer?
Every time you press a key, a signal is sent, and imagine that every signal is a bus.
You will need SOMEONE to drive the bus to the computer. That is the driver.

Heh, yes. Pretty bored.

Solve : Some audio recording questions?

Answer»

Well, I need to record several audio sources at once.
I realised yesterday that one sound card can't handle multiple inputs, which I'd assumed anyway.
Basically I need to capture at least a voice (will use my headset) and an electric guitar (will use an adapter, 1/4"-3.5mm jack).
Now I just need a decent way to do this.
Could I use two sound cards in one computer, or would using two separate computers be better?
I'm not REALLY limited on hardware here, I have my main machine with an X-Fi that I could use the ONBOARD audio on, two machines with SB Live cards, 8 old PCI128 sound cards, and a laptop with an Audigy 2.
What's going to be the best way for me to do this?
Also, if I wanted to capture even more sources, say another guitar and voice, what would be the best way then?

Please, don't say rent a recording studio because I don't have the money and this is just a small scale project for now.

THANKS in advance for any advice. What you need is some good software. I use Cakewalk Sonar. With that you only need one card and then you record in multiple TRACKS. So for instance, you would record the guitar and then play it back and record the vocal over it just like you would in a studio. Sonar is pretty expensive, but I think there are some free multitrack recording programs out there. The problem with doing that, which I could do with Audacity which I currently use, is that the vocals don't always exactly match the guitar.
This isn't a pro doing it, it's my sister, so if she plays the guitar, and then sings over it, it will be slightly out of sync.
Thanks for your reply anyway though, it's a good suggestion but not what I want to do.
Also, welcome to the forums.Update: I achieved what I wanted to do just now in a very roundabout way, using my laptop to record the guitar and my desktop to record the voice.
Whilst this does work it's not very elegant or practical, especially as I will need to be doing this quite a lot.
I was to either activate my onboard audio, or install another sound card in my desktop - would I be able to record from two sound cards at once like that, or not?Isn't it possible to get a "mixer" thing, that takes multiple inputs and gives one output, that can be connected to the sound card?

My 2.1 sound system has a wired remote, and it includes an "AUX" plug. Any device (MP3 player, for example) I plug in here will mix with whatever sounds the computer is playing at the time.

The question is- is this functionality available in a standalone device? That's another possibility, yes.
I'll look into SOMETHING like that, it's just a question of my funds.
Doing it with my existing hardware would be ideal, but if I could find a cheap mixer that would also work, thanks.

Solve : I don't want to be here but it's for the health of my computers!!! please help.?

Answer»

please just bear with me because im just looking for some information. Oh, and please dont tell me to buy a new computer.

first up;
this computer that im currently using needs new ram and a new video card.
i have 2 ram slots that i can use and 1 agp slot.
this comp is a refurbished dell optiplex gx260 with a pentium 4
and im currently running windows XP
im pretty sure about what im getting as far as ram goes and where im getting it from.
im planning on getting 2 , 1 gig cards from crucial.com. are there any suggestions as to where i could get compatible cards other than online or if there are better companies than crucial to buy my ram from? preferrably not over the internet.

I'm having more of a problem finding an agp video card for this.
i'm just not really sure what my comp is capable of running.
in all REALITY i want this video card upgrade for one reason only.
the game spore is out and i want to play it.
so all i really want to know is if this comp can handle any cards that are capable of running that game. and if so then which ones ? and lastly any suggestions as to where i could find one. preferrably not over the internet.

next up;
my laptop, all it really needs is ram.
its a refurbished dell latitude
it has two ram slots
i figure that ill probably get these from crucial.com also. but if there are suggestions please do tell. id really much rather not buy anything over the internet.

lastly;
my dinosaur.
its an old ibm notebook from '93
it used to run windows 3.1 i think but now it doesnt run anything.
it has been f-disked.
it needs a new battery pack and a dos boot disk and then old software.
all i want to do with it is word processing.
it has an old dial-up modem and i would like to remove it and if possible replace it with memory.
im willing to do what it takes to MAKE this old thing work.
it was given to me as a "gift"
if there are any resources i could use to get old boot disks and software for free.
that would help more than anyone could possibly know.
i understand that replacing the modem with memory, more than likely, means replacing the whole motherboard.
and finding a new battery pack may be next to impossible. but i feel that i should at least try. instead of just junking it.

any help at all with any of these things would be greatly appreciated.
in all honesty i havent done too much researching on my own but if i know where the resources are i will use them.
and again please dont tell me to "just go buy a new computer".i think you pretty much need to buy it over the internet more selection ect ect ok well first your ram its ddr and you have 2 slots so you will have to take out whats in there 1st how much ram does it have currently? and whats the graphics card? does it have onboard? and yes that computer should be able to run spore as long as your graphics card is ok and what is the cpu speed? and your dell laptop same thing how much ram now? again youll get a better deal on the interner more selection ect ect and your old old old laptop whats wrong with it? why wont it work?I think the best AGP video card out right now is a GeForce 7600 and I think that it would run Spore pretty decently.no look here and choose the one you can afford http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/Best-Graphics-Card,2011-5.htmli currently have only 256 mb of ram and i know that i can run 2 gigs
the graphics card is currently part of the motherboard but i have an open agp slot
my cpu runs at 1.8 mhz it is a pentium four

the laptop has the same ; 256 mb

like i said before im not so worried about the ram ive pretty much got that all figured out
but the graphics card is what im having the trouble with
mostly the problem is about knowing what card will fit in my agp slot or what card my cpu is capable of handling
and how to know if the card will support the PIXEL shader 2.0
ive gone to tomshardware.com before but when i look around there it seems that most cost more than $200 or so and thats about my spending limit
so how do i know what will work in my pc with my os?
what do i need to know in order to make an informed decision??

oh YEAH the dinosaur;
the old ibm doesnt work mostly because of the battery
the battery doesnt charge and wont hold any charge long enough to save any data like clock settings or anything
but when it stays plugged in every piece of data stays up to date
it also doesnt have any software at this point
the hard drive has been wiped clean
it needs a dos boot disk and a new os
as long as i can use it to write i would be happy
but i would like to be able to take out of the house
if there are any more questions about this just ask and i will do the best to answer them

and thanks for your help so far.in the link it says agp cards those are the best bang for buck right now and yes replace all the ram ddr ram this should be some good ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231047 im a little worried about that cpu cause the minimum requiremnts a 2ghz p4 but i hope that the ram should make up for this just get any you can afford on that link up there for your card

Solve : Forums going up / down for a few days?

Answer»

As I'm sure you've seen there is a notice at the top of the forum now. I've done this because I'm finally making some progress on the server and will be testing the SQL database on the NEW server with the forum code remaining on this server. I HOPE this will allow me to integrate the new database quicker by not having to setup everything else (website, scripts, forum scripts, etc.). Before moving the forums over allowing the slow down issues to get resolved sooner.

Unfortunately doing it this way requires me to take down the forums occasionally to change what SQL server the forums point to and test it in maintenance mode.

Forums SQL database now running on a new server. While everything else remains on original server, please report any issues while we test things out.
Good luck. Some down time is worth it if it makes everything better in the end.Thought that there was going to be news about it some where. HOPEFULLY things will be a lot faster an less isues ahead.Good luck Nathan.

Yea, same here. I mightn't be able to do much but you'd never know. Best of luck and hope no major problems. After a long learning experience I've got the forums now relying off the new SQL server I hope this will eliminate all the recent slow down issues we've currently been having. With this setup this should allow us to test the server before making it final and moving everything over.

Continue to use the forum as you normally would and report any issues on this thread.
Progress!

Works fine here.Definitely a progress.
I came home 2 hours ago, and the speed is pretty consistent.
I'll make sure to report any problem.I've noticed as I've been trying to create a lot of new posts, modifying and other tasks to test that the average time is about around a 1.0 - 1.8 seconds. Although decent I'm sure this could even improve more once everything is on the same server.Still quite a lag on page load but otherwise seems pretty good - no server message yet!!! Seems a lot faster TONIGHT. I haven't seen one of those annoying server messages yet.Quote

Ditto.I mean, little bit sluggish, but pretty consistent. I can't post average load time, because I have some video file conversion running, which slows things down a bit. I'll post back, when done with video. The thing about the ups and downs of the forum, is just normal. However if all the members in this forum would contribute something for the forum, then there will be a lot when it comes to activities and excitements.

I'm not sure where to change it when XP is already loaded but when you are loading up the XP install there are options and settings you can change and it is in there. I can't think from memory exactly which tab etc. but I've had to reinstall XP loads of TIMES and this setting is definately in there. In one of the country or currency settings somewhere I think. I just bought a HP 300 Touchsmart COMPUTER. I've had it since Jan and it has been returned to them 3 times now for the same problem.....Hyper Transport Flood Sync Error. I'm not techie and really have no clue what this issue is. Bottom line and my question here is...should I insist UPON a new computer? They have assured me each time it's been returned that it was fixed. That is not the case and it is currently "in the shop" again. It's still under warranty but my concern is I have a lemon or something plus I feel that each time it's SHIPPED and bumped around, it's not something that is good for the computer. What would you do?I would ask for a replacement machine, I've done it in the past when the shop kept on repairing it and it came back with the same faults. Just be sure to BACKUP your data.A full page of google HITS mention 3 things in common:

MSI MBoard
AMD CPU
And a basically recurring issue.....

I agree...take it back.

It separates the first part (fairly early) but it seems SMF can't figure out where to split the rest.
This might be an issue worth solving.

Solve : Watching eBay auction for a Rolling Stones record?

Answer»

Well, I can honestly say I'm a BIT surprised. I'm watching an eBay auction until Wednesday night, when the auction ends. This auction is for a copy of the first pressing of the hit 'Heart Of Stone', by The Rolling STONES. The label is London, and it is the first label the record had. (White, blue and purple.) The surprising thing about it is the condition. The record is unplayed, according to the seller. I've already put up a bid and am watching it until the end. There haven't been many views of the page though. As of right now, I was just outbid on the auction. I'm not going to make any new bids until the last minute, and it will only be up to the value of the record, so I do not pay too much. Below here is an image of my current copy, which has some evidence of past play. As it appears, it has been played quite a few times. You will even see some MARKS too, as is expected. The scratch that is the worst offender is highly visible at the end of the playing area on the lower right, and is impossible to miss. (The record does not skip though.) The label also has some minor wear (still looks bright):

http://members.aol.com/rdm6190/Heart_Of_Stone.jpg

I'm posting this as a link because of the image's size.

Chances are, its been played as often as a normal record.

Its not worth paying so much for:
A) Its missing its ORIGINAL caseing
B) I'm sure I could go to the second hand store and get the same thing, for 25 cents.

Buy if you will, but really, how much did you bid?I bid no more than $10. That's only five cents more than the starting price. Besides, the record on the eBay auction has no wear on the label. If the seller claims that the record is unplayed, I should believe him. Very few copies are. I'd rather get a near-mint copy of the record rather than get a plain used one.

Besides, this is the auction page:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320083018610

As it is, this record comes from the seller's personal COLLECTION.

Solve : TALK TALK FREE BROADBAND?

Answer»

Hi,

I've recently been reveiwing my Broadband supplier and have heard about Talk Talk's 'Talk 3' plan-

£8.99 monthly cost
£11.00 line rental
Free calls anytime UK local/national
40GB usuage

The latter is what i am questionning...how much is 40GB and am i likely to reach this amount in a month? I dont download much, but use the internet every day.

Thanks
KellyDo you use it for general surfing? IE jsut websites? Also how long every day?
Thanks

Chris

P.S Whys it called 'FREE' Boradband if its £8.99 a month?Your bandwidth per month depends on what you are looking at on the internet.

For example, websites with LOTS of images of high quality may take up much more bandwidth since it has to download so many images.

Call the company, and ask them if you can upgrade your package later. If you can, and you go over your limit, you can just upgrade.OK, let's get to answering the question.

1 GB is 1024 MB 1 MB is 1024 KB. A really long text file on your PC is 10 KB. JPG images are in the 3.5 MB range. 4 GB is 4096 MB. You won't hit it often, if ever. thanks for the advice, think i will just go for it as my Tiscali broadband is a piece of s**t.

I love my Tiscali broadband!
2Mb/sec download, unlimited, £14.99 a month!
Can't get fairer than that.
What's this free broadband's speed?
And be careful, tons of people have complained about hidden costs etc.
I'll dig something up for you.For UK broadband consumer reviews etc, check out http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ (formerly ADSL Guide). Before you take the plunge with TalkTalk, have a look at the TalkTalk forums to see what experience other users are having. What I'm hearing is that CPW were heavily oversubscribed and could not cope with the demand. They may have resolved those teething troubles; not sure.Quote

Yeah i know its cheap & unlimited, but mine cuts off all the time, its a bleeding nightmare! Won't let me reconnect, so have to restart my computer...thats the only reason why i'm looking at changingTalk Talk is 2Mb
It actually works out cheaper than Tiscali at £8.99 per month, then line rental on top, only its £30.00 for the modem- would i need this?

I did a speed check on my computer- can anyone give me any advice from taking a look at the results on the link below:-

www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/117165791653730918225.html

Would apprecaiate any suggestionsPerhaps its not an issue with the ISP, but an issue with your computer instead.

When was the last time you reset your router? (Not total reset, just unplugged it and plugged it back in)

Have you contacted the ISP about the problem?

(*ISP Means: "Internet Service Provider")unplug it quite often, but it doenst seem to help.Well, its interesting, your upspeed is much slower than your downspeed according to those results. If you are a web designer, or have a server, or need to send very large amounts of information over the internet (eg: Picture emails, or large presentation file ATTACHMENTS) then CHANCES are, you don't want that connection. Its really only 3x the speed of DialUp. The downspeed is the equivalent to sattallite, or a low grade DSL.

What SORT of router are you using? Is it wireless or hard wired?

Back when we had Comcast (its not Comcastic! ) We started having difficulties with our cable internet cutting out as you are describing. It turned out that it was a problem with the Cable modem that Comcast gave us. They replaced it for free.

Calling your current ISP to figure out the problem isnt a bad idea either, since they can take a look at the status and diagnose the problem further.

I would like to add: I dont believe that test is extremely accurate.
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/117181933314399532682.html this was my result, and I consider it incorrect. My up speed is much faster, as well as my downspeed. I believe I get 2-4MBPS here at this residence, (as opposed to my normal 100MBPS Fiber internet connection with 108MBPS Network speed)Thanks for that.
My interenet is ADSL broadband, through my telephone line- cable broadband is not yet available in my area.
So my laptop is just connected to a small box which is connected into my telephone socket.

Think i need to take it up with Tiscali.

Thanks for all your help, you guys are saviours. x

Fantastic idea for decluttering your desk.

http://kooki.ca/van/I've seen a few setups similar to this one.
The best one was a PC actually built in already, and it was pretty good, saving the HASSLE of doing it yourself.
Which is a good or bad thing depending what type of person you are.Quote

Solve : I hate school computers?

Sorry, the dumb school computer won't let me save a JPG, so this will be big.

WHY CAN'T I RESTART LATER???Group Policy.

Tough break. At least my school's computers have never done that to me.
They've done many THINGS, but never that.
They're awful things, and the so-called technicians who are supposed to maintain them are nothing but "trained" monkeys.Windows NT Authority PERMISSIONS are fun, arent they, Dilbert?

Yeah. I can't even save a **** JPG?? i think reprogramming the schools keyboards with regedit is alot more fun.
The computers at my school have no real security or protection either then blocking websites. And most of the time they block useful websites.Quote

try .jpeg slightly differant.. might work..Dilbert, all you have to do is figure out a way to beat the system.

That's how it was when I was in high school. Nobody could do any research because most of the EDUCATIONAL SITES were blocked. So we just looked at porn instead. Funny.

I am always finding new ways to get past and beat the system each time they come up with a new blocking technique.

Solve : Absent...?

I was somewhat absent from the fora over the last few days. My apologies. It's over the stupidest things, sometimes, but that doesn't make it less true. I knew my bedroom desperately needed a cleaning, but when my mother ordered my PC shut down until the three-day job was complete, WELL, that's what caused me to be gone except for when I had free time at school the other day. Well, it's clean, so I'm back. Hope I didn't miss too much. It couldent have been that dirty, could it? LOL ........ He's got a really big bedroom.........

Solve : System Properties?

Answer»

Hello,

I would like to know more about when my computer runs into trouble and it shuts down and when I re-start and get a black screen with white PRINT instructing me or making some information statement, in the past it all of a sudden disappears, and I have to RESTART to figure out what it said, there have been times I have had to do this several times to figure it out.

Does this have anything to do with

System >= System Properties>=Advanced>=Settings>= Start Up and Recovery=30 Sec.

Would this time setting have anything to do with the black info page disappearing ?

Jp
Possibly.
The 30 seconds refers to the AMOUNT of time that startup and recovery options are shown on screen - usually safe mode, last known good config, and so on.
Is that what you mean?
this time can be increased or decreased as desired - I set mine to 60 seconds.Yeah, . . Thanks Guy.

JpYou're welcome.
I find the default is very low, doesn't give you much time to make a choice, especially if you're not there at that moment.
While you're on that page, disable AUTOMATICALLY restart on errors. This message is often associated with recently changed System Settings, such as MSCONFIG changes, and other edits.

Normally, it can be ignored without a problem, its just a way for someone to get their computer back if a problem happens.

What Calum said will stop the messages, without causing any problems

Solve : Hot computer casing?

Answer»

Top of Computer casing gets very hot to the touch (over the 500W power supply location) when running games. Computer is P4P800, 3 GHz, 2988.8Mhz, 1GB memory, RADEON 9600 Pro Card, Windows XP Pro.

Casing has lower front intake fan and a side EXTRACTOR fan PLUS two additional extract fans in the rear panel below the power supply.

CPU temp goes up to 60+ degrees Centigrade as shown by the Ai Booster (just touching red area) and a fan speed of 5700+ rpm.
When running other programmes the Ai Booster shows a CPU temp of 44C, system temp of 38C (in the green zone) and a fan speed of 4530 rpm.

Is there cause for concern or is there a method to cool the top of the casing (such as a home made heat sink ?. I've seen some CASINGS with a grilled top which I suppose helps dissipate the heat buildup.

Any help much appreciated as I am not a computer geek!

What is the make of the power supply? What is the make of the case? Do you have adequate ventilation around the case? It is not tucked into a desk, etc.?Thanks GX1-Man for prompt reply. Have to get back to you tomorrow as I don't have info. Have to open up computer for power model. No name on case. Will take photo so you can see type of case and location.Quote

a side extractor fan
While the case is open, take a look at this. It should be an intake, not exhaust.Pentium 4 CPU's tend to run warm if they are of the prescott series. i will need to know if your processor is a prescott, if it is, you will need alot more than a cheap aluminum CPU heatsink to cool it. my advise is to find out what core your CPU is, what socket, and what CPU cooling device you have. Thanks for all the replies. The power supply is DYNAMO 500W 50Hz. The side fan is definitely extractor with a strong air flow coming OUT which is only slightly warm.
Like I said I'm no computer geek so I'm not sure about the processor. I assume it's located where there is abig fan on top of it at least 3 inches in diameter and about 1 1/2 inches high with a Intel sticker on top. The box from the Motherboard says it's P5P800 AI Proactive Motherboard. Intel LGA775 Pentium 4 CPU. ASUS Hyperpath Technology. Intel 865PE chipset. Dual-channel DDR400. AGP8X Graphics. Hope that helps.
I should point out before we go any further that the sides of the casing are quite cool and that it's only the area on top of the power supply that gets really hot. The front half of the casing top is not as hot as the rear half which is not nice to touch.
My main concerns are the hotness of the casing top and the dial which goes just into the red zone on th Ai booster. Sorry can't attach photos they exceed attachment size.

Quote

Try reversing this fan so that air is blowing in. This should put air flow directly to the CPU and PSU.Quote

But, I don't think that would account for the heat the PSU is generating. The heat from the processor is vented through case fans and the PS fan, but it certainly would not cause the very hot temperatures muzon's computer is generating from the PSU. That's coming from the PSU itself.muzon, I'd be thinking about replacing the PSU. I've experienced what your're experiencing. I bought a new PS in Sept 2005 and installed it; I was replacing a smaller capacity PS. The heat the thing generated was unbelievable. The top of the case, above the PS, got so hot it was quite uncomfortable to touch. I returned that PS to the seller and reinstalled my old one.

On 1/2/07, I bought this: FSP Group (Fortron Source) AX400-PN, RoHS, 12cm FAN, version 2.2, 2 SATA, 20+ 4 pin, PCI Express, 400W Power Supply - Retail. Now, the rear top of the case is almost as cool as the front.

Thanks all you guys for the help. As the PSU was bought and fitted only a couple of months ago as an upgrade I think I'll take it back to the supplier for checking before I do anything else. And the heat was not an issue before it was replaced? From what i COULD find out Dynamo seems to be a brand from Mainland China...draw you're own conclusions. That, coupled with the occurrence of the problems apparently AFTER is was installed is even more conclusive.
