Solve : Was Windows Vista a real success for Microsoft??

Answer»

To find out what's on your mind.....No, because not many people "agree" with Vista, IMO.
In their own words no. You might want to red here http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=adlcdTrJJuNEI wonder how many people will say "No" even though they havent tried it yet...

I will say this:
I have voiced my opinion, and anyone who sticks around on this forum enough knows exactly what I think about every Operating System in existence, including MenuetOS. VOTED ''can't say''. I don't have much trouble using VIsta but i've heard a lot of people complaining. I have only used it once, maybe twice, so i really can't say.I've been using it since it was in beta. It has improved since, but I still think it sucks. Vista has strengthened my interest in Linux and its various distros, though. (I hope to one day become a Linux geek with a fully tweaked install of Arch Linux.)I honestly don't see why people are still complaining about it. When it came out, it sucked. I bought a new computer around the time it came out and it came preloaded with Vista. Half the programs and games I wanted didn't run properly or it took a lot of EFFORT to get them running. ALSO, some hardware didn't have drivers for Vista at the time. I immediately installed XP when I got the new computer. A few months ago, however, I tried Vista again. Everything seemed to run fine. If you have the hardware to run it, I don't see any reason to complain. I also like the new features, like the preloading of apps you often run into RAM. Many things start up faster, especially Firefox. Also I read somewhere that Vista runs drivers on some different level of the kernel or SOMETHING. This is an improvement over XP because in XP when some important driver crashed it made the computer BSOD, but now it just restarts the driver and a balloon pops up from the TRAY telling you about it. Plus, look, SHINY! Could have done better in this department though, I like what Linux can do now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JI-ye1oa4N8

I voted yes.

On Photobucket, under every image you have uploaded you will see 4 different TEXT fields with different text in each. If you want to post the image on a forum (like here), just click on the Code: [Select][IMG] code box. Then, go to the forum, and press CTRL + V to paste it into the message box.

All sorted? I read these explanations, and I'm not sorted out -- and I know how to cut and paste! Are either of you going to BOTHER to EXPLAIN cursor positioning, default folders, or the like?

You wrote explanations that each of you understand, but they're not necessarily understandable to others.

I have some things to do offline, but let me think about this.Quote from: faizan1990 on October 31, 2008, 05:09:55 PM

Solve : Problem deleting file?

Answer»

Dear Forum -

I am using VISTA. When I do disk clean-up there is always one file left that is impossible to delete. It just won't go. I have tried everything and I am getting worried. By now it takes up 1 MB already. The file is called mainframe.log and it is a text document. It is located under C:\Users\Evelyn\AppData\Local\Temp. What can I do? What should I do? Ignore it? Please excuse if this is a dumb question but I am a computer NOVICE, pretty much. Your help is greatly appreciated. How do I get rid of this thing? C:\Users\Evelyn\AppData\Local\Temp will either recreate itself or not COMPLETELY be deleted. The Temp files have to go somewhere....

Right click on it then choose PROPERTIES after you have ran the disk cleanup and SEE how large it is.try getting a file shredding program

Solve : buying a computer?

hey people im going to be making a computer really soon and iv chosen what i want i was wondering if yous could tell me if its worth it thanks

AMD AM2 x 2 Dual Core 6000+
$540.00

500GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
$170.00

2 GB DDR2 800 Memory
$85.00

Vista business 32 bit
$185.00

512 NVIDIA GF 8600GT PCI-E
$120.00

ASUS M2X-Hair Extreme
$245.00

Microsoft 200 Cordless Desktop Key board
$45.00

Where are you located ? ?
A few of those prices sound a bit high...those prices are quite high. these are the prices that i found...

AMD AM2 Dual Core 6400+
$190

500GB 7200RPM HD
$120

2GB DDR2 800 RAM
$60 ($30 after rebate)

1GB 8600GT
$110

(the rest were fairly close in price.)

my total: $995
your total:$1390

thats a difference of $395. with that money you could purchase a better video card or processor.
Have you got a case? and PSu?

what are you using this system for???

And if it is an online store you are buying from can we have a link??

I will post other links to stores once i know where you are from, what you need it for etc.ummmm first off im located australia melbourne and the link for the store im buying it off is here http://www.msy.com.au/SYSTEMS/Amdgame.pdf thanks for all the responsesDude that's alot of $$$$$$, if were you i would take Hommer's advice. There are many online sales were you can get PC peripherals for cheap $$$$$$$.You might be able to buy a cheaper preconfigured computer and spend the extra money you saved and upgrade only those portions of the computer that you feel is worth the UPGRADES. Some online computer dealers offer barebones kits which include "bottom of the barrel" parts. I have been building COMPUTERS myself for the past several years. They have been "middle of the road" specs. Depending on what you plan to use it for, you should decide how much to spend on it. If you just plan on using it to surf the net, EMAIL, and word processing, you could get by with lower-end parts. If you plan to use it for gaming and things that require higher power, you'll want higher-end parts. For me, personally, I prefer something in the middle.oh yeah, middle ground might be a good idea if you think you might have a desire to go play some computer GAMES now and then but you're not interested in the high tech gaming gears. Games are a great time-waster. I have better things to do with my time.first off i just wanted to say sorry it took so long my internet didnt get paid -.-" well anyways im going to be using this computer for gaming photo editing and most likly video editing so i want to get a fairly good computer.

Solve : Possible Dead Sandisk Player?

Answer»

I was mowing the lawn at the transmitter site for my dad, just cause he can make me do it so I threw my pants down near the washing machine after I thought I emptyed them. It turned out that I LEFT my player in the ONE pocket an my mom put it in the wash. I took it out an it was filled with water, I opened it up so that it would dry out. It isnt turing on. Its a SANDISK sansa m240 1 gb player. How do I know for sure an I got this as a replacement from the COMPANY. I only let it dry over night with the whole thing open with fans running on it.If it doesn't work, its dead. If it does work, it isn't.
It that second one the pc can see it but I can turn it on when it disconnected. The water has obviously screwed up whatever powers it when it's not connected to the PC. Plan on buying a new one.Put it in the pocket of a dry pair of pants and RUN a normal dryer cycle.
This worked for me exactly one time however at this point you have absolutely nothing to lose......Quote from: patio on April 27, 2008, 10:17:30 AM

Solve : more info on hotmail not opening?

Answer»

I recently was able to TRACK the # for my HOTMAIL ERROR.
The message SAYS "Error # 12037 connecting to www.pastport.net: The date in the certificate is INVALID or has expired.

One of the reasons it gave for this was that I may not have used my hotmail in over a year thus it would expire. I hardly doubt that since hotmail is about all I do use and I check it several times a day.

I hope this is of some help.

Solve : Acronis?

Answer»

I have Acronis to BACK up my computer. However, the file is compressed and too big to fit on a DVD. Is there any way I can "uncompress" it, REMOVE unwanted programs and burn it to disk? The FIRST step you should do before burning the image is to use the Tools section of Acronis to "verify" the image...this ensures it is a valid workable image.
Then simply use your burning tool to make as MANY DVD's as needed. Most decent burning apps let you choose the sizes at the beginning of the burn.
I use CDBurnerXPPro but Nero and other top of the line apps will do it as well.

Solve : laptop left in hot trunk?

Answer»

My daughter must leave her laptop in the trunk on a hot day for about 3 hours. Will this damage the computer? Thanks for any light you could shed on this subject. It will very likely damage the computer. could you please state how? if the laptop is on and you leave it in the trunk it might overheat and lockup, but i dont see how it will be damaged if it is simply stored there.Perhaps the expansion and contraction of the metal pieces? Perhaps the expansion and contraction of the metal pieces? That's the only way I can think of...

thats possible but not very probable. the temperatures would have to be quite high in order for the metal to expand.I'd just keep it in a box or something so that the outer heat won't directly hit the laptop. The only part of a laptop that is normally exposed to very high amounts of heat are the hard drive, cpu, and memory. Those already have a good resistance to high temperatures. The part that I would be worried about is the screen, which normally doesn't get hot at all.Quote from: homer on April 24, 2008, 10:36:20 PM

Any increase in temperature will cause metal (and anything else) to expand. It's just a question of how much.
sorry, i ASSUMED i didnt need to expand on my last post, i figured it was pretty obvious.

Quote
the temperatures would have to be quite high in order for the metal to expand enough to damage anything.

fixed.Typical laptop storage temperature ranges quoted by makers are around 4°F to 140°F (-15°C to 60°C). Outside that range ELECTRONIC components can be damaged. Li-on batteries pretty similar. LCD SCREENS can be damaged permanently by temperatures below and above these.

Quote
Philip C., a 16 year old, was abducted and placed in the trunk of his car for approximately five hours in the FLORIDA summer heat. The temperature inside the trunk reached almost 140 degrees.

Solve : Memories of Robert F. Kennedy?

Answer» http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/06/05/eveningnews/printable4158341.shtml

Quote
Memories Of Robert F. Kennedy
NEW YORK, June 5, 2008(CBS) On the morning of June 5, 1968, MILLIONS of Americans woke to the shocking news that New York Sen. Robert Kennedy had been shot after winning California's Democratic presidential primary. Kennedy - 42 years old - died the next day. The senator's campaign staff included a young man named Jeff Greenfield, who is now, of course, CBS News' senior political correspondent. Now, on the 40th anniversary of RFK's assassination, Greenfield shares his memories.

When you look back 40 years, there's always a danger of buying into myth; of romanticizing a time or a prominent figure. But after spending hours looking at old films of Robert Kennedy's 1968 campaign, I'm convinced that what I remembered-and admired-was something very real.

There was, first of all, the campaign itself. Since it was my first glimpse of presidential politics - I was 24 years old, working as a junior speechwriter - I didn't know then, how remarkable it was. The controlled hysteria of the campaign plane, the size and intensity of the crowds, the sea of hands and faces, and at times near-frenzy.

There was also a lot of humor. Robert Kennedy had very little patience with the platitudes of politics, and he often mocked them - and himself. Listen to him explanation to the citizens of Pomona, Calif., why he won't put on the oversize sombrero they gave him:

Kennedy said: "What if its too big? What if it's too small? Then it'll fall down over my ears and you'll be embarrassed that it's too big. Let me try it on at home."

The crowd implored him to try it on.

Kennedy said: "I'll say this, if I'm elected president of the United States with your help, the first day I'm in the White House, I'll put the hat on."

And at a California college, he began a speech with the obligatory quote: "Thomas Jefferson once wrote that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing. But If I'm elected president … don't try it."

Apart from playing with his audiences, he would also challenge them. The most enduring memories of his appearances for me is how he would push his listeners into thinking.

When talking to college students about why he opposes draft deferments for college students: "As you stay here and sit here and debate all these questions and TALK about the morality of some of these problems of the poor and all of these other difficulties, and then say a person who has the right and the ability because of maybe what his father did or mother did, or place that he happens to live, has the right to go to a college or a university and therefore doesn't have to be drafted and a poor boy who happens to be black has to be drafted. How you can argue that and state that?"

He would condemn violence and lawlessness in the ghetto, but then add this: "But what is also necessary is that we understand one another. That you understand their problems and that the black people of the United States understand that you are concerned about them."

He was also ready to challenge himself. When he turned against the War in Vietnam, he would always include this: "And when the history is going to be written about this conflict, I'm obviously going to have to take my share of personal responsibility. I happen to think I learned something from that."

At the heart of Robert Kennedy was a sense of passion, even outrage at conditions he often called "unacceptable." He was a Democrat who hated welfare, not just for the anger it stirred among taxpayers, but mostly because of what it did to the poor:

"They might have wanted fathers and they might have wanted husbands. We have given them instead checks and a dole," he said.

t all came to an end in a hotel kitchen in Los Angeles. But my last memories are not of that moment - but of the train ride that took his body from New York to Washington - a train ride that stretched for eight hours.

Inside, there was something of an Irish wake; family members greeting friends and campaign workers, telling old campaign stories.

But every time we looked out the window, and saw the countless TENS of thousands gathered to say goodbye - kids and Cub scouts and Little leaguers, veterans in their old uniforms, that sense of loss was overwhelming.

People still ask, "what if?" Could he have been NOMINATED, could he have been elected, could he have governed effectively?

We don't know, can't know. But did we lose a rare kind of public figure? That I think we do know.

Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill,
With Abraham, Martin and John.
-- From "Abraham, Martin and John"
Recorded by Dion and written by Richard Holler (1968)A very fitting tribute to the man, Aegis...

I have to admit...out of all the Kennedy clan...I admired Robert the most.

Thanks for the post, my friend...I enjoyed reading it.Thank you, Saviour.

As I stated on another forum, they weren't perfect, but I can think of no one better across from Nikita Kruschev during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Solve : Forum down tonight @ 9PM (MST)?

I'll be UPDATING the forums to 1.1.5 tonight at 9PM (MST). While this is being done the forums will be going into maintenance mode and will be INACCESSIBLE. Assuming all things go smoothly they shouldn't be down for more than an hour (probably 30-45min). thanks for the warning. Good luck, and make sure you have it backed up first. i thought the forums were going down because you had to re-duct tape the server. lol scotch tape is smoother than duct tape, you may want to use that instead since you said you want everything to go smoother...... Solve : Samsung SCH-U550 Help?

Answer»

Hey

I just got this new phone as an upgrade. On my PREVIOUS phone Nokie 6215i i used the program Tone this to send ringtones to it made off mp3's on my computer. I did this even though my phone was not on the computability list i of course selected a similar MODEL and sent it from there.

I CURRENTLY have a

Samsung SCH-U550

it is not on the compatibility list so i selected the Samsung U340 a DOWNGRADED model.
I then proceded to make my ring tone. When i sent it it came in as only bursts of noise
like music for .5 seconds then silence for 2 then another .5 seconds of music.
I thought "oh maybe it has the same limitations of my last phone. So i made sure the ringtone was under 100kb and still this happened.. i then attempted selecting many samsung models and trying again and again wiht no success.. i finally used a copy of Numa Numa or w.e that was 56 KBps and it worked! i then tried it with another song lowing the bitrate to 56 Kbps and it did not work .. i even tried the same track as before and still not working..

so basically what im asking is, does anyone know how to send computer made ringtones to this phone so that they will work or know of a PROPER program to do so for this phone

Solve : Great company!?

Answer»

I am so Impressed by this company I have to tell others. I am sure alot of folks know this already. But Newegg.com Is awsome. I placed an order for a printer yesterday, June 2 And when I got home after work my printer was at my DOORSTEP. Unlike another company that I ordered from that sent my stuff to the wrong address and I did not get my order till 22 days later, thats counting buiness days. I also ordered some ram from them took 2 days. NEVER ORDER OUT OF COUNTRY. GLAD to hear you got the printer...

Was it the one we had talked about? I certainly hope you ENJOY it.

You're right...Newegg is definitely a great company!Yep, newegg.com rocks! I live in Ohio so shipping takes a bit longer, since they ship from California. But, I can see, via online shipment tracking, that they usually ship within a day or two, maybe even the same day, of my placing an order.

I think tigerdirect.com is another good online source.Soybean newegg is opening 4 new distribution centers so you're lag time to Ohio should improve a good deal...Interesting. Thanks for that info, patio. I'd second that, Newegg is a great company. Although my last few purchases have done have been through Amazon, since the prices were cheaper and I have the option to do free shipping. Ordered a new laser printer and was amazed that it could be shipped free. With gas prices I'd imagine they'll be changing this in the future.

Has anyone else NOTICED price increases on Newegg? Or is it just some of the things I've ordered over the last few months?I've actually noticed the opposite in the last 2 months...i had price watch set on 3 items and they all came down so i grabbed em'...

Solve : Two coloured eyes?

Answer»

I saw a pic awhile ago and it was quite weird.
The kid was looking straight at the camera and one eye was white/BLUE and the other was red.. Now normally if you look at a camera with flash on (this camera did) both of your eyes go red if you look at it, but this kids eyes were two colours.
This is apparently a precursor to cancer..?
Or more hopefully a light fragment kinda thing..

Have any of you guys read anything about this??

It struck me as quite odd...

FIRE away Google "heterochromia" without the quotes. David Bowie and Jane Seymour have different colored eyes.

Quote

Not read of this.

Sorry, my comment about David Bowie is apparently incorrect. According to Wiki both his eyes are blue but one is permanently dilated.

Different colored eyes.....INTERESTING....Uh, maybe I made myself mis-understood.

The kid has blue eyes,
yet in the pic one is red (like the devil eyes from a camera flash)
due to the camera flash..

Solve : Canon Laser Class 7000 fax problems...?

Answer» HEY everyone, I've got an ancient machine here that my office has been using for about 15 years now. It's just about ready to give up the GHOST and so we bought a replacement fax machine and I'm trying to find a way to print out a report that lists all the names and numbers that were programmed into the machine. We don't have a manual for it and it's so old that I haven't been able to find one online EITHER. If anyone has ever worked with this kinda thing before, any help would be greatly appreciated! What is the OS of the computer that is controlling the printer?

Jonas Windows XP (i think it's just the base version, not pro or anything)So XP SP1.
What do you actually want to do?
Print the driver info or what?

Jonas Is this a printer as well?

If it is, could you disconnect the printer/fax from the phone line, shut it down, and hold down the CANCEL button, and start it again while holding that down? Many printers will begin printing test information, which may help you. (Why disconnect it from the phone lines? To make sure it doesnt make a "test" call)

It's just an old fax machine and what I'm trying to is print out a list of all the fax numbers that are programmed into it so we can put the numbers into the new fax machine so the people running it don't have to manually type in the numbers EVERY time.

I was TRYING to free some space on my computer and I found this out.
If you go to C:\Program Files\MSN Gaming Zone (WINDOWS xp) and delete everything (or anything) in that folder, when you refresh everything comes back.
Kind of a waste of 8mb.....dude.. why would you try to delete something that only takes up 8 mb? it's not like it's a 9 gb drive with only 4 gb left After installing Age of Empires, 3.93GB.

I've even super-compressed stuff that I MIGHT need in the future, deleted everything else...

My OLD computer was like that, always space hungry. Try running Ccleaner and see if you can get rid of anything else.I've pretty much done everything to save space. It'll fill up sooner or later...I know...... This Should help

Jonas It could be a swapfile needed for the game...it may just be setting aside free space.I dont think so.....
After cleaning out Program Files, I've found out AOL comes with so many programs taking up like more than 200MB.

I also found out clock was set to 2001 and that this laptop was passed down to three people before it reached me

Solve : I can't switch user in XP?

Answer»

Hi Guys

Great FORUM and website, really good help. I tried searching for my question but could not find it anywhere

I recently formatted my comp, everytin seems to be working fine, apart from the welcome screen, it DOESNT LET the other users log on, its like the classic log in screen where you have to enter the log in name and password

It doesnt let me switch user either

In control panel, when I go to,

User Accounts>>Change the way a User Logs on or off,

the following message appears: A recently installed programme has disabled the welcome screen and fast user switching. To restore these features, you must uninstall the programme. The following file name might help you identify the programme that made the change: RtlGina2.dll

I searched for this in the search OPTION, and found it in C:\WINDOWS\system32

Shall I delete it, I'm worried it would effect the way the system RUNS. Basically I just need you experts' advice It seems to be a problem related to a Netgear adapter.
Check out this site for a fix.

Solve : Xbox 360 and a DG834G?!?

Answer»

Hey there guys!
Well basically I rarely GO on my 360, but when I do it seems to effect the wireless.
The 360 is wired via an ethernet to the DG834G Netgear ADSL Wireless ROUTER. So when I boot up my 360 it AUTOMATICALLY connects to the router, but then if someone then tries to use the INTERNET via the wireless the laptops, computer, and mobile phones just dont find the wirless at all. However if we then connect to the router via an ethernet it works fine, no problems.
The problems vary in length, from maybe 10 minuites to about a whole day. We do unplug the router and then TURN it back on but it doesnt really help. The wireless just comes back on when it feels like it.
Slightly weired to say the least.
Thanks

Chris

Also I think its worth noting that the problem still presists even if the 360 is turned off.

Solve : boot problem help plez?

Answer»

hi, i've been having a problem w/ my computer booting up for a while now. Whenever I power on my computer, it loads to the windows XP screen and then restarts itself, boots up again, and then restarts... etc. It does this a few times before it actually loads WinXP all the way and then everything else is pretty normal. This happened for a while, and then LAST week I decided to reformat my computer to start over anew. Unfortunately, the problem is still there. I would guess that it's a problem with the hard drive, but I don't know for sure. Any ideas? ThanksIf you reformatted and the problem still exists, then it is most likely the hard drive. They are relatively inexpensive to replace these days.

Alan <>< Also more info on the machine itself, what OS and any new hardware/software installed recently may help narrow it down a bit...Runs Windows XP SP2
AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 1.66 GHz
1 gig of RAM
Maxtor 6E4040L0 40 gig HDD
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro

Just started using a WD My Book, but the problem was there before I used it. Haven't really installed much new software as of recently. I use a lot of different programs: bittorrent, firefox, adaware, AVG, AIM, MSN, etc... used to use Limewire, but not for a while. Any other info that might help?Travel to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery...uncheck "auto reboot on errors" which is on by DEFAULT. Re-boot.

Then DLoad and run the Maxtor diagnostics on that drive to see how healthy it is.

If it is fine then update and run all your protection apps...then post back with a LIST of them and the results.so I downloaded and ran the seatools diagnostics basic tests on my hdd and they all seem to check out ok... but i still have the same problem of the computer rebooting a few times before actually loading windows.Quote from: aznmidude on August 07, 2007, 09:02:16 PM

AMD Athlon XP 2200+ 1.66 GHz

The AMD Athlon XP 2200+ should run at 1.8 GHz. Do you have the correct CPU speed setting in your BIOS?

I'm also thinking you might a power supply issue. What power supply do you have in your computer? Did you make any hardware changes before this started, such as adding something or upgrading something? You said you reformatted, did you, how did you?i've had my comp running at teh same speed for almost 4 years now, and this problem surfaced maybe 4 months ago. I didn't bother doing anything to it because all it did was delay windows from booting eventually. I can try changing the CPU speed, though i'm not sure it will do much. As for power supply, I have an Antec TruePower 380 watt power supply. And I have not made any hardware changes to my computer recently. I switched to a flatscreen LCD, but that was almost a year and a half ago. I recently started using an external HDD, but the problem was there before I started using it.

I reformatted with the winXP CD, just a fresh install.Quote
Travel to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery...uncheck "auto reboot on errors" which is on by default. Re-boot.

Have you done this yet ? ?yeah, i unchecked the auto reboot on errors and it didn't change anything. Are you now getting any blue screen error messages ? ?
If so post them here. Were all of your programs still there after you re-formatted or did you have to install them all from scratch again?
AVG, Aim, MSN, Limewire etc?no blue screen errors, it just keeps loading up to windows screen... then REBOOTS itself, sometimes it doesn't make it to the windows loading screen, still at the bios stage, and then reboots.

when i reformatted, i did so from scratch... everything was reinstalled. lol i haven't even installed everything yet.Heat
Bad RAM
HDD failing
PSU

For the heat issue remove a side panel and place a small fan there for circulation. If the problem goes away you have found the culprit.
To test the RAM DLoad and run MemTest...let it run a few hours. Any errors and you have found the culprit.
For the HDD DLoad and run Seatools diagnostics from Seagate's site . It will tell you if the HDD is failing and you have found the culprit.
For the PSU borrow a KNOWN good one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there. If the problem goes away you need a new PSU.

Solve : XP mystery - experts needed?

Lovely to see so many helpers out there!

We have a problem START up...

XP operating system

1.Goobly-gook wording on the start up screen, missing letters and ocassional heavy vertical lines... some winging type symbols in text lines... some letters arrive slowly to fill in the missing spaces...

2. Options to safe mode etc (will start in safe mode)

3. When starting WINDOWS in 'normal', it crashes to grey screen after the windows icon picture.

We are on the third new hard disk... second network card... new power supply, new hard disk cooling case, new tower case, and an ever shortening fuse with the 'expert company' that is trying to fix the problems... and wish we would dissapear...they have "never seen anything like it before", but I'm sure someone here has.

Any ideas out there other than a new machine? It could be a physical problem with the motherboard/CPU/RAM

Download and burn Memtest86 http://memtest86.com/

Now, you say that you replaced the HDD:
Does it contain the exact same content (documents, files, etc) as the first one?
If so, it could be a virus that you keep copying.

While in safemode, go to:
Start> Accessories> System Tools> "System Restore"
Restore to the data before the issue started happening. Thanks Zylstra,

MMM, tried the last known good "sys restore" settings without any success, some time ago. The new HHD was freshly loaded (but did they?) so the immediate virus suggestion is out (but a good idea of yours). I will try the mem test and let you KNOW.

Solve : Slow start-ups and all media lags - virus??

Answer»

Hi. I am using Windows XP on an Acer computer that is less than a year OLD. I have 512MB RAM and 1.6gig Intel Celeron processor. A little over a month ago I let a friend of mine borrow my computer. That is when I had problems start. Well he says that he didnt do anything but Im not sure. The computer starts up real slow, it is less than a year old and it takes about 10 mins or so to boot up completely. Once it is booted up it takes a while for anything that i choose to do to register and actually start. Any type of media that I play, whether it be a song or video, it lags and kinda seems to skip like a scratched cd, and I dont do a lot of things at once and I have not downloaded any large files or a lot of small files. I check my task manager and it shows 61 processes. I have been recently trying to learn about which programs are most important for me to be RUNNING but its seems to be most of them all are important. I used to have an old expired Norton Antivirus but I got rid of that and put in Spyware Doctor with Antivirus PROTECTION and I update it reglularly. I have FOUND some viruses but I dont know the extemety of them, but when I got rid of them the performance of the computer did not increase. I am currently deployed in Iraq and I dont have any means to take it somewhere to get fixed. Im not computer stupid but I do have a bit of learning to do. If I were to reformat my computer, would that fix the problem and get rid of any virus that I might have? Would I be able to put all the files that I do not want to part with in a flash drive and tansfer them back into the computer after the reformat is complete? Or would I just be PUTTING a virus back in the computer if I do infact have a virus? Or is there any easier steps that you might be able to think about that Im not thinking of? Thank you for your help.1) Update your malware protection...any antivirus or spyware/adware programs you have installed.

2) Boot into Safe Mode.

3) Run full system scans using your malware protection...one program at a time. Let them delete and or quarantine whatever they find.

4) Boot into Windows normally and run your scans again...letting them delete and/or quarantine whatever they find.

5) Download, install and run Hijack This. Post your log here...

Solve : Just a quick question!!!?

Answer»

In my broadband status window, in the activity section, where it says, Bytes, Compression And Errors, what does it mean if you have errors?
Why? Are you experiencing errors? What software are you using? Is there any noticeable problem with your internet connection? It could mean that a packet had to be FRAGMENTED (split up), there was a disconnect or a collision.

Look at the documentation or help page of the program you're using if you are curious as to what it is measuring. Its like this: -

Sent Recieved

Bytes 3,155, 366 35,710, 530

Compression 0% 0%

Errors 0 1

Thats what it looks like right now, there are no noticable errors rly, just wondering why they might happen...Errors means that one or more packets didn't REACH their destination. This is not unusual and can happen for any number of reasons. The packet can have been refused on the RECEIVING end for example or can have been lost along the WAY. If you see a lot of errors it can be an indication of a problem, but it doesn't sound like that's the CASE.

Solve : Advice on maintaining 10 systems centrally?

Answer»

I need advice re system management.
We have 10 systems that will be replaced by dual-boot Vista/XP system within short. These systems are used for training purposes. The current systems (elderly XP's) were all installed one-by-one. We use a Microsoft tool that resets the systems after rebooting thus removing all havoc and data that our trainees have created.
Unfortunately we still have to do all updates (Windows and anti-malware etc.) manually on a system-by system BASIS and this is very time consuming and impractical.

Now with the new systems I would like to use something like SMS and maintain all system centrally and more automatically.
However I do not know much about these DEPLOYMENT and maintenance systems and also, we are an organization of volunteers and have very little income so the solution must be cheap, if not free.
Microsoft has solutions but they are not REALLY appropriate for 10 systems and also way outside our budget.
Can anybody help us?

Solve : Dual monitor setup?

Answer»

Hello again all,

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way for me to mirror my desktop onto another monitor that I have attached to a different graphics card.

My main graphics card is my on-board GeForce 6100 (512MB frame buffer)
My other graphics card is my PCI GeForce FX5500 (256MB frame buffer)

I'm running Windows XP Pro, although I do have open SuSE 10.2 on here as well.
AMD Athlon X2 64 5000+
2GB of DDR2 800(2x 1GB)

Let me know if you need to know anything else.

ArcIt should be as simple as just hooking up the 2nd monitor. Windows 'should' recognize that there is another one and let you select how you want to use it (mirroring or extending).

If not just let us know.I have my on-board enabled in the BIOS, and set as my main display in Windows, and I'm using it as my main display(It's more powerful than my FX5500)

However, in the Display -> Settings, it will only let me extend my desktop onto the other card, there isn't an option to mirror it.

In the nVidia control panel, it will only let me mirror my desktop to a monitor on the same card.
Then you have to ask...do you want an extended desktop or just mirrored? 'Cause by the sounds of it you can do EITHER, depending on how you hook up your monitors...I'd like to have it mirrored.

I've got my computer in between two monitors on a table that's in front of my wrap-around couch in my room.

I was hoping that I could mirror my desktop so you can see a movie or something, easily on both sides of the couch.

I would just PUT both monitors on my FX 5500, but I don't want to use that as my main GPU, seeing as my on-board owns it(sadly)

That and I don't have a DVI to VGA adapter anywhere around here, and I'm 7 miles from nowhere, so it's hard to go pick one up.

Every little bit helps!

ArcClearly, you really don't have a choice. If you want to mirror, you need to connect both monitors to the same card.

If you really don't a way to travel 7 miles to get an adapter, buy one online. I bought one from newegg.com.

And clearly, if you want to get out of your dilemma of the lower performance of the FX 5500 and still mirror two monitors, a better graphics card is the solution. If you go that route, the card may come with an adapter. I am aiming for a new card(...and a 1100W PSU, 4 more GB of RAM, couple 500GB SATAII HDDS...)

But right now I think I have about 34 pennies, and a couple of them are Canadian

>.>

Eh, thanks for your time anyway.Do you have a piggy bank big enough for all that? I been lookin at one o' these as well...

Well, I'm getting a job at Carl's Computer Repair in Newport, for about 25~30 an hour, and the parts(2 320GB drives instead of 500GB drives) are about $845 from Newegg.

I should be ABLE to afford all of it pretty quickly, seeing how busy that shop is.

Actually, it's really, really busy right now, after the lightning storms around here.
I think that only one of the twenty or so computers that had their PSU and/or motherboard burnt last week, wasn't an eMachines.

lol, u mean GATEWAY. A one Month bump ? ?

Solve : Test is double spaced on emails and blog?

Answer»

Hello.
The problem I am having is my text is double spaced on my emails and in my blog. Example: I put something in, say Publisher, with regular spacing between lines but when I copy and paste in a message or email it will go out douoble-spaced. I'm sure it's the settings in my computer but I don't know where to go to make the change. Can someone out there help me.
Thank you very much,
LARRY WollerHello,
It should read "Text" is double spaced, sorry.
LarryBeen doing some experimenting and a paragraph of written sentences appear to be fine, but something like a poem, for instance, is sent double spaced.
LarryWhen publishing ONLINE websites, and other things that make their end results in HTML, you often will get an extra line when you press ENTER. Instead of just pressing ENTER, press SHIFT+ENTER . This will prevent the extra line from appearing.

Does that work for you? Or was it something else? Hello,
THANKS for the input. That works with some of the problem. The problem I'm having mainly is if I copy something like a poem, recipe, etc that I have in Publisher and when I paste in an email or on my blog it comes out double spaced. (example below) When I copy something like this paragraph it posts fine. I think it's in the program in my pc but I just cannot figure out how to change it at this time.
Thank you,
Larry

How it was copied:
I’ve tilled the fields and went to war
Built cities and bridges and much more,
Has my destiny run it’s course
Lord, is there any more?

How it looked after pasting;

I’ve tilled the fields and went to war

Built cities and bridges and much more,

Has my destiny run it’s course

Lord, is there any more?

Okay, well, there isnt much of a way to fix that problem while pasting, but you can try this:

Click File> Import> (select your text format)
Select the document that has your text. This will handle the formatting for you.

If that doesn't work, click the first line of text, press BACKSPACE, and then SHIFT+ENTER

I’ve tilled the fields and went to war

<BACKSPACE> <SHIFT+ENTER>Built cities and bridges and much more,

<BACKSPACE> <SHIFT+ENTER>Has my destiny run it’s courseOk thanks for the info, I'll give it a go and let you know how it works. My blog by the way is a chronicle or diary, no "ranting" on my page. (**)
Have a good day!
LarryIt sounds like thats just how the blog site formats line returns? Shift-enter can make a different 'character' and that site is just interpreting the one USED in your email program as a 'new paragraph'...

Solve : looking for jpgs?

Answer»

I would like to know how do i do a search for all the jpgs on my computer. Do I go to the command prompt and if I do what are the commands I should put in?Assuming your OS is Win XP.

Start>Search - All Files and Folders - type .JPG in the All or part of filename dialog BOX then click on Search.Picasa is a good way to find all pictures on your computer and organize them.CBMatt, I've heard Picasa re-organizes all the photos on the hard drive upon being installed, whether you like it or not. Is that true? Can it be restricted from doing that?Yes it does do that...can create havoc as well.
I have YET to find a setting to prevent this from happening and have STOPPED recommending it...That sounds pretty scary Patio, are you SURE?
I'm not going to try it to find out. LOLWhoa...what? Are you sure about that one? I've had Picasa for awhile now and all of my pictures are where they're supposed to be. I have no knowledge of any pictures on my computer ever being re-organized by it. It re-organizes my pictures WITHIN the software, but my pictures are still in their original locations on the harddrive. Or is this a newer feature? The version i tried was about 3 mos. after release...i haven't gone back to it since.
I believe it's up to Ver. 2.1 now.

I went back to Irfanview and never looked back.Well, if you don't want to use Picasa...

In Command Prompt, type:
for /f %A in ('dir "C:\*.jpg" /s /b') do @echo %A

But it takes a while to find all images. And only in C: drive. Or you could just use Dusty's solution.

Well the start button came up with all of the different programs but not the whole thing. But THANKS so much for the help!Sometimes the taskbar can be hidden...

Have you tried Control Panel/Taskbar and Start Menu and uncheck the box "HIDE Taskbar and Start menu...then saving your settings?Quote from: The Saviour on August 20, 2007, 03:17:37 PM

I tried that but i still dont have anything. Two things:

1) Place your mouse POINTER at the very bottom of the screen outside the field of view click and drag the pointer upward...do you see the taskbar? No? Try NUMBER 2.

2) Do a system restore to a point previous to this happening.

Solve : BIOS setup/CMOS?

Answer»

For the past 2 weeks, I have been getting the message when I restart my PC:
CMOS settings wrong.
CMOS DAte/Time Not set
New CPU installed! Please enter setup to configure your SYSTEM.
Press F1 to run setup.
Press F2 to load default values and continue.

Do I have to do anything before removing the battery or I should just go ahead and take the one on the mb and replace it (just like that!)

Thanks and waiting for your response.

collinsIt will not affect any data you have on the machine whatsoever...
Just make sure all power sources are unplugged when you replace it.And remember to touch the case to ground yourself before reaching in.Does every computer have a (CMOS) battery somewhere?Yes.

Except for maybe Cray RESEARCH machines...
They're kinda special.Thanks.
