Solve : tracking a stolen CD?? |
Answer» My friend and i were having an argument and he says that if like a PC game was stolen from like wal-mart, game stop, or just anywhere else then they could track it somehow with like a product KEY, or an activation code or something on ur PC. I thought that they couldn't, well I'm not saying that they couldn't completely its just that they probably WONT. but does anyone know of like say wal-mart or gamestop tracking Cd's down? if anyone knows then sweet because i feel like winning an argument lolI doubt they WOULD have an investigative branch of people doing this 9 to 5 although i'm not discounting the possibilities of being able to do so... |

Answer» I was wondering how I could make my laptop just log off when I close the screen instead of it completely shutting it down. I am many times just moving my laptop from upstairs to downstairs and when I shut it I would like it to just log off.In Vista using the shutdown right ARROW at the bottom left there is the logoff option.Hmm, my Vista laptop goes into sleep mode if I close it. I wonder WHETHER there's a preference setting somewhere that would allow you to change the behavior of your laptop. |

Solve : June poll? |
Answer» I backup any important docs, pics and data on a second physical hard drive. I use a 500GB external HDD. External HDD's fail as well...even newer ones. Add another layer to your strategy.Quote from: patio on June 04, 2007, 05:33:00 PM External HDD's fail as well...even newer ones. Add another layer to your strategy. Very true... This topic got me thinking about backing up more often/more ways and last night I backed up using DVD's. I just prefer dragging whatever I need to my external HD... I'm lazy that way. Guess I'll pay for it one of these days There are free automatic backup software programs. Maybe, if people know of any good ones, they should post it (I use the one that comes with Vista now, but I used to use this great free one that I got from www.download.com but I forgot the name) I wish I could select multiple options. I backup data to another partition, disk, cd, dvd, or another computer/server. All depends on what I'm backing up.Quote from: michaewlewis on June 05, 2007, 02:17:14 PM I wish I could select multiple options. Agreed. Depends on the requirements and the value of the data.I just recently began backing up my data, and I have over 4GB of data to backup, and that would take 6 CD-Rs so I just use DVD+Rs. I used to do it on a 128MB flash disk that failed recently. My strategy is as FOLLOWS; Acronis is scheduled to run every Sunday night at 3 AM. The .tib files are saved to partition #4 on HDD #2. This partition is excluded from defrag, diskcheck and any other scans which i found out the hard way is a good idea. On the first Monday of each month i burn 2 copies of the latest backups to DVD's...one to store here and one off site. Worst case scenario if i lose both SATA HDD's at once (unlikely but not impossible) i am at worst 3 weeks away from back to normal for my whole system. This is on my workbench machine which sees the most action...program testing etc. My other machines have similar but not as aggresive strategies but are done regularly. Another good tip i saw on another Forum i frequent is the user BACKS up his My Documents folder to CDRW's once a week. But i have no need for that. another good idea, is to move the My Documents folder to a different partition or hard drive. (SINCE that is the default store for everything.) That way if something screws up the OS and you need to format, you don't lose everything. Just the stuff on the OS partition. That's something I learned the hard way, too.Quote from: michaewlewis on June 05, 2007, 07:21:45 PM another good idea, is to move the My Documents folder to a different partition or hard drive. (Since that is the default store for everything.) That way if something screws up the OS and you need to format, you don't lose everything. Just the stuff on the OS partition.Agree. I moved My Documents to a non-OS partition. I think another benefit of doing this is less fragmentation of the OS partition and speedier defragmentation of that partition. My main backup media is an external HDD. CD and flash drive also occasionally get thrown into the mix.Which reminds me to run Auslogics... thanks Reasons I use a separate partition for just backup: It works great for making an archive of your files Its faster than making archives on a CD Its closer to you (in a sense) that you dont have to go get the CD I can schedule regular backups easily, without having to insert a disk Some protection against viruses But NO protection against disk failure... (unless the data on drive C WENT corrupt and the extended partition stayed intact) Yeah, I back up all my flash drives and MP3 players on another partition. I just back everything up on my external hard drive like very month so it's more or less out of date.I use an external HDD, and sometimes a flash drive as well My flash drive holds 2GB, it has its uses. My brother got it for me as a Christmas present, it was a really well priced one. oooh... where are the moserators? i found a poll glitch. i voted once (for other ) and then went to the next page and thought i had forgotten to vote, but upon voting once again i realised it went from 1 to 2 votes with my first and 2 to 3 with my second bugz! figured you might wanna know |

Solve : Does Anybody Care About Anything?? |
Answer» Does Anybody Care About Anything? ...there is no user intervention that has to occur This was buried in today's news. If I were to post this in the right place on this forum it would be ignored or somebody who say it is just not possible. Yeah, being positive is OK. But to denial or ignore danger? Anybody care? it's called sensationalism. It's not that nobody cares, it's that everybody knows otherwise. The fact that you insist that every computer is susceptible to hacking from all angles isn't debated. What's debated is how it's any different then saying "YOU COULD GET STABBED ON YOUR WAY TO WORK!". It's possible, but the probability is so unlikely as to be null. hackers don't actively scan IPs looking for vulnerabilities. and those that do are 2-bit command prompt script kiddies who could see a vulnerability in a open door. And even those hackers that do actively scan IPs (not personally, but usually with the help of a program) won't get an ICMP response from any windows machine with a firewall enabled, (not even windows firewall). as such, to them, the machine is invisible. The thing is, there aren't hackers looking to perform identity theft. It's because people gave them an open opportunity to do so, OR, because the person was the victim of a phishing scam that took their information. first, you didn't even post the source of the information, nor did you provide any part of the story that jives with the headline. Are we supposed to blindly believe everything in a newspaper even without the actual article? They may as well just publish the headlines, and we simply accept each one as fact. The thing is: the news is a product. a product they are trying to sell. publishing articles that go directly against what people think or believe is how they do that successfully, because people WANT to read it to see if perhaps they should change the way they do things. But half the time it isn't even factual information, it's confirmation bias at work, which I keep seeing over and over.Quote This was buried in today's news. What publication? Thank you for your well written response. BC. My concern is that people do not even look to see if the threat is real or not. Why is that? It is hard for me to write. So I am going to give another partial quote for Network World that is along the same line Quote Eric Schultze, who served as a FOUNDING member of the Trustworthy Computing team at Microsoft and was a security director for the vendor, says the MS08-068 patch that Microsoft released as part of its monthly Patch Tuesday announcement closes a flaw he first tested at Microsoft in 2001. You can go to the Network World web site and find information about the last patch Microsoft put out. http://www.networkworld.com/ What Eric Schultze states is a serious matter. Either he is just promoting his own COMPANY -- or -- Microsoft has not shown much interest in security. Thanks again for your reply. I would be happy if everyone would just read this and then make an informed decision about how they will surf the net. I'm not sure I found the exact article you speak of, Geek- I searched that site, and found "Internet Explorer Flaw bigger then expected"- not sure if that's what you mean, but it is recent. EDIT: I think I found it- "Microsoft patch tuesday has three on critical list" the way I see it, although all the version from 5 through IE8 beta were affected, it hadn't been exploited in that time period, UNTIL microsoft released a patch for IE7 that documented the problem; then some adventurous fellow tried the same exploit in the older versions, and lo and behold it worked! I stopped using Internet Explorer ages ago, but I used to defend it when I did use it for some reason, which is why I can understand some people reluctance to switch browsers. But IE has been subject to these types of flaws for ages, which is why I stopped using it. I think we can all agree it would be best to have a completely bug-free and secure operating system and programs, but the reality is it's practically impossible to write bug-free software of anything but the most trivial kind, and a lot of security vulnerabilities come from bugs in the software (although some are mere oversights)Quote EDIT: I think I found it- You found it! Notice that now the news about about Steve's Jobs health has become more important the the dubious patch the Microsoft released on Tuesday. Well, I do hope he gets better. Now that brings up a question. Is using Apple OS 10 safer that using any version of Windows? Of course, maybe Windows has more than five times as many users.I'd say it's safer, but at the same time, one has to look at what's possible. Since a lot of them run on Intel, they can run x86 assembly, which could open up some dual-platform abilities if there are any clever virus writers out there. But as you said- most people use windows, which is why it is so strongly targeted. If everybody moved to OS10 because it was safer, it wouldn't be- all the virus writers/hackers would be looking at OSX for vulnerabilities, and they would likely find some, considering there would be so many people looking for them. You logic is has a good foundation. Now let me introduce another vector here. The concept of expansion of a system Take any system, MS, Apple or anything related to information security. Now what happens if you increase the number of people using the system. Do you have to modify the design of the system to maintain security? Many would say no. If it is secure with a few, it will be secure with many. True? False? Maybe? If no authoritative answer comes forth, is it a non-issue? Because nobody answers a question, that must make it OK! Or It is a danger until proven safe! Is either based in sound logic? What I don't know can not hurt me! Would you agree? I care about something ! I care that the world is not appalled by a much televised holocaust perpetrated by the Israel's might on the Palestinian people. How could we as a 21st century people not be outraged by this pogrom . How could we not realize that for a people who QUITE rightly tell their sons and their sons' sons that they must never forget the 6000000 of the holocaust are today doing the same thing to another group of people. I am left to wonder :are all men born equal , or are some more equal than others? PEACE Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 14, 2009, 08:31:21 PM Take any system, MS, Apple or anything related to information security. Well the way I think it works is, because more people are using it, there are that many more possibilities to find flaws in the way the OS works when there are more people using it. Mac OS, for example; indisputably has flaws that nobody knows about- going with your style of questions- if nobody knows about them, are they still flaws? The thing is- if nobody knows about them, they can't be fixed, and if MS (or Apple, or whomever) releases a patch to fix it, hackers/virus writers will dissect the patch to see what they are patching, so as to take advantage of unpatched systems. In some cases (very few) a malware author discovers the flaw before anybody else; and thus they can take advantage of it. Usually it takes some time for anybody else to even become aware of the flaw; people complain of slowness, AV companies get involved, etc. and finally Microsoft is informed. Contrary to common opinion, Microsoft is actually fairly quick to release patches once they know about them; but how many computers will be infected before the patch is released? Some might say it wouldn't really matter, since MS will usually include it in it's next "malicious software removal tool" to remove it. The concern being, of course- if the malware was designed to do so, it could harvest information from those machines it infected. This is one of the reasons I have a good hardware firewall am wary of what I download. Even with AV programs- you can only detect and remove what is already known (or slight mutations of what is known)- as such it's best to keep it off the computer in the first place. |

Do you see anything in device manager (right click computer and choose manage) like an unidentified device, or one with a yellow exclamation mark? 1) I am connected to another PC with vPC. I tried connecting while logged into vPC and the first time it said driver installation failed, but the second time it worked. I was able to access my files. 2) Right clicked computer>manage and saw this image attached (PSC) -You see the arrow? Solve : Mozilla or Sun/Oracle?? |
Answer» 09/16/2013 09:48 PM Mozilla Firefox 24.0 Final Secure your **** software and leave us alone for a while!!!!! While I can see where you are coming from with this, It's easier said than done. It's the equivalent of asking Doctors and scientists to come up with a vaccine that will 'secure' (immunize) us from all viruses and bacteria. It's just not possible. In order to create a vaccine you need a sample of the infectant- pretty similar situation for Fighting security problems. There are some techniques that can be used to try to cut down on things such as Buffer Overflows and other more easily mitigated problems, but sometimes the problems are so non-obvious that to command they be fixed before they are even discovered is to essentially demand clairvoyance. The "problem" is that when a Programmer writes software, they USUALLY write it originally considering what a well-intentioned user will be doing; for example, a routine that reads in XML and parses values using a library might assume the XML is valid and simply Error out if not. We don't generally start writing code with the express intention of considering how malicious inputs would affect our logic, because if it doesn't work to begin with, how secure it is doesn't matter. Instead we add "security" afterwards. And nobody can ever have enough understanding of all the facets of development to be able to point at, say, the specific method being used to load an XML file as being a vulnerability, because it turns out that due to how that library is structured and how it's API is based on a former JSON api, you can pass a JSON file directly to it and execute arbitrary Javascript code within the context of the application when the application loads the XML (that is just an example). It's basically like building a boat. No matter how careful you are, you can never be sure how waterproof it is until you stick it in water. And even if it floats for a day, or a month, or years, somebody might come along and find a a weak truss or beam, and to the bottom it goes.Good reply BC. My main gripe is with Mozilla. I can understand the slight annoyance of updating to a new version v23.5 > v24.0. It's all of the little security and stability fixes in between that get to me. They now allow for 'No Restart' add-on installs. Why can't they figure out a 'No Restart' fix like when going from v23.1 to v23.2? Java updates have slowed down. Let's hope it stays that way for a while.Quote from: evilfantasy on September 17, 2013, 08:11:17 AM Good reply BC. Same reason you can put fuzzy dice on your rear-view mirror without stopping and shutting off your car but you have to shut it off to replace the engine block The tricky part is of course that we aren't talking about add-on bits of Javascript, but rather the Executable behind the whole shebang. On windows, you cannot delete or replace a running executable with another. The closest you can get would be to rename the running executable to some other name, save the updated version, launch it, and have the existing executable exit. The tricky part is that you simply cannot "switch" from running one executable to another- it's not even really a CASE of complexity, but even with the same program it's like trying to jump from page 300 of harry potter to page 301 of Sun Tzu's The Art of War- It just won't make sense. Even if it was possible and all the complex part of actually updating all code segment pointers in memory to point to the new executable was doable, you've still got the issue that the new executable is now dealing with the old executable's data. Let's imagine a simple program with a structure that tracks update information while it is running, perhaps from a remote database: Code: [Select]struct UpdateInfo{ char* Version; char* ProgramName; char* UpdateURL; int UpdateType; } Now imagine a version .x is released to address a security issue, which is dealt with by adding a Security Token to each UpdateInfo structure: Code: [Select]struct UpdateInfo{ char* Version; char* ProgramName; char* UpdateURL; int UpdateType; int SecurityToken; } Updating a running program would be impossible; the existing program uses a structure that is 16 Bytes long (on 32-bit), whereas this structure uses an extra 4 bytes. This is going to cause problems. Imagine if the program normally keeps an array of these structures in memory, the old one will be laid out sequentially- If the program was to suddenly be updated with new code, the new code will try to access the values incorrectly, because it assumes the structure has a SecurityToken field. Essentially, all the data get's corrupted, and the program needs a restart anyway. To make matters even worse, Even compiling the same source with the same compiler can result in compiler-generated structures to DIFFER in size and arrangement enough to make this a problem. Well here is an answer as to why so many updates. Keeping up with the Joneses... Solve : Google Talk Invisibility Issue? |
Answer» Quote Oops! You are not invisible because you're logged into Google Talk from another client, device, or location that doesn't support invisibility. The message I always get from Gmail Chat when I'm on my computer on Gmail. I WANT to be invisible so most people don't chat me but I can chat a few people if I want. I don't know what the other device or client can be. On my IPHONE I have Gmail CONNECTED to Mail, Gmail, Google Hangouts and Mo+ (a Google Talk/Voice client). But I still get the message when all those apps are not running (except the email ones check for email every 10-30 mins). I get it when my iPhone is powered off too. I have used the sign out all other sessions FUNCTION in Gmail and that doesn't help. Does anyone know how to solve this? |

Solve : Win 8.1 upgrade smooth until logon surprise? |
Answer» So I got bit by this Windows 8.1 trap linked below. And realized it after a reboot when my original password didnt work. Said some choice words when I realized what Microsoft did. Now undoing the Windows Live Logon. I tried to skip this step in the 8.1 upgrade from 8.0 on the new laptop and should have researched this first. But at LEAST there is a way to undo this after getting tricked into this local to Live credential swap. So I got bit by this Windows 8.1 trap linked below. And realized it after a reboot when my original password didnt work.I haven't had this problem. My MS Account password is about a thousand times more secure than any password I use locally anyway. And I need to use it to sign into Visual STUDIO (for Preview release feedback stuff) as well as the Developer Account and a few other things, So I just used my already existent Hotmail login information when I first installed Windows 8. Quote then went to install Microsoft Security Essentials on Win 8 and SORRY, you cant install to Windows 8, you need to go with Windows Defender instead Frustrating!Windows Defender on Windows 8 is a relabelled and updated Security Essentials. |

Solve : Why Windows developers maske it easy for Trojans?? |
Answer» Really, that is t is not my question. Somebody else said it and it has been echoed on many other sites. And how does this make it easy for Trojans... ? ?Using Avast I got some items in 'System Volume Information' and could not be deleted. It seems others have had this kind of issue also. Quote ....Avast has picked up the Win32:Adware-gen virus in the "System Volume Information" folder. However regardless of whether I scan in safe mode, in a boot-time scan or just within normal windows-XP AVAST reports that it cannot delete, move or rename the fileCannot Remove Trojan Win32 The Avast forum did not, IMO, give a quick and easy answer to the problem. It would seem the Trojan creators have got Windows by the tail. Just put it into the 'System Volume Information' and nobody can get rid of it. What do you think? Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 12, 2013, 12:22:59 PM Using Avast I got some items in 'System Volume Information' and could not be deleted. It seems others have had this kind of issueYou already answered the question of how it got there. The Trojan did not put it into the System Volume Information Folder; The System Restore Service did. System Restore checkpointed and a Trojan was in one of the monitored locations, so it got saved as part of the checkpoint. Avast can view the contents of the folder, just as you can; run a command prompt as administrator and you can easily view the contents of the folder. You can even change or delete the contents of the folder. I don't know why Avast would have issues deleting the files. Quote Cannot Remove Trojan Win32 The Error message makes it pretty clear. It has NOTHING to do with the file being in System Volume Information at all: Code: [Select]The Operation is not supported for this type of Archive Cannt process "C:\System Volume Information\restore{07AAAC-1E84-4982-B148-C6D063D1AA98\A0003837.msi\icon.icon.exe "[b][/b] The Error is because Avast does not support deleting files from .MSI installers. IT has nothing to do with System Volume Information. the .msi is probably an installer for a piece of software that installs adware in addition to it's typical complement. Why they DECIDED to mention anything about a Trojan I haven't a clue, considering they quite mention it is a Win32:Adware-gen that is causing the issue. Quote The Avast forum did not, IMO, give a quick and easy answer to the problem. Uh, actually, it gives several. Quote It would seem the Trojan creators have got Windows by the tail. Just put it into the 'System Volume Information' and nobody can get rid of it.It failed to delete the file because it's inside an MSI file and Avast's MSI support does not include removing files, only reading them. Thanks, BC. That Avast thread was hard for me to follow. It seems others had the same problem. The solution is to remove, the virus, make a new checkpoint, delete all older checkpoints. Avast does slot delete checkpoints, you have to do it. After checkpoints are gone you may remove the infected file. All this MEANS you must have another way of doing a restore of something further back in time. But if there is a abetter way, I would like ton know.Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 12, 2013, 04:59:15 PM After checkpoints are gone you may remove the infected file. All this means you must have another way of doing a restore of something further back in time.Fact is the Infected file is something that would be recovered and used only if System Restore is activated and used. Random executables inside msi files saved by System Restore don't run themselves- they will pose no danger unless System Restore is used. These MSI files are also only activated and 'restored' for the Actual System Restore- they are basically the installer scripts and data for restoring an Application. Which Brings to bear another point: Since the infected file is inside an MSI, and since these MSI files are checkpointed data for reinstalling a Application that is installed at the time of the checkpoint, this means that an infected Application was installed. That infected Application will only "run" if that Restore point is restored. Otherwise, nothing happens. In the same scenario I wouldn't even bother to try to clean it. Eventually it will be deleted as new Checkpoints are created. |

Solve : Need help from an experienced Commondore Vic 20 user!? |
Answer» I have recently GOTTEN my hands on a complete Commodore Vic 20, however I am having an issue with it. The rf modulator ( http://www.zimmers.net/cbmpics/cbm/vic/rf-adapt.jpg ) is supposed to connect via coxial so it runs on channel 3 or 4, currently, the only thing I own that is COMPATIBLE is my old nintendo converter ( http://www.thestrong.org/online-collections/images/Z005/Z00538/Z0053874.jpg ). Everything is plugged up properly because when I switch the system on the grey FUZZ on the tv screen changes and if I jiggle around the connection between the vic 20 box and the cable from the NES converter, the fuzz changes and sometimes remnants of a picture even appear. My question is, do you think this means the vic 20 box is bad? Could it be a loose connection? Should I open the box up and take a look inside? Or perhaps is it because the nintendo converter isn't properly designed for what I am trying to do here? Any help at all will be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thanks!!! |

Solve : configuring new system with Windows and Linux? |
Answer» Hi everyone. I have assembled a new tower system and have not yet installed any OS. I intend to RUN Windows 7 on it; I will be installing it from a retail disc for Win 7 that is currently installed on an old Pentium 4 and I'll be terminating that old computer since the motherboard has some degrading capacitors. I would also like to have a Linux OS on it. I prefer having two OS by installing one of the OS as a virtual machine using VMware Player or virtualbox, as opposed to a dual-boot configuration. This new build has 8GB of RAM, so it should have no problem running a primary OS and virtual OS simultaneously. It all comes down to how you use it. If you plan on using Linux mostly and just running a few Windows programs, put Windows in the VM, if it's the other way around, put Linux in the VM. You also need to think which OS will be running the most intensive tasks and consider putting that on the main machine.Yeah, after giving this more thought, I think installing Windows as the primary system makes the most sense for me. I use MICROSOFT Office a lot. Quote from: camerongray on November 19, 2013, 06:47:50 AM Personally however, I dual boot my desktop off of a pair of SSDs (One for Linux (main) and other for Windows 8.1 (secondary)) and my laptop off a single SSD (Linux (main) and Windows 8.1 (secondary)). I don't have a problem with GRUB though - Sure it's not the easiest to configure manually but once it's up and running it works fine, besides, loads of distros will configure GRUB automatically at install.I have one SSD in this new build and I plan to move the 250GB SATA HD from my old Win 7 system to this new build. So, it will have two drives and I might go the dual-boot route. On the other hand, I'd like to have the option to simply switch back and forth between Windows and Linux without restarting. So, installing a Linux OS as a VM is more likely what I'll do. I was doing this back in 2011 but it was a bit sluggish at times on the old system (P4 with 4GB of RAM). I think this new system will handle such a configuration much better. I could see the restart option being a pain...it's just how i run my dual-boot systems as i never have issues with boot-loader messes ...or VM slowdowns...just my opinion. For the usage you describe I would probably agree with using Windows as primary and Linux in a VM, if you go that route rather than separate drives. As camerongray rightly says, it's all down to what you use the most. I would have Windows as primary and Linux as a VM myself mainly because, as far as I know, the only thing I couldn't do on Linux that I currently do with Windows is play GAMES (by which I mean games that don't work on Linux), and they'd be much better off not running in a VM. I don't think you'll have a problem running a VM OS on top of your normal apps, you have enough RAM to make both smooth and SSDs help greatly in these situations as it's easy to run into a situation with a HDD where both OSes are accessing the disk and just thrashing it, bringing the system to a crawl. |
