Solve : My Computer has lost it's way?

Answer»

Desktop with two hard drives. Vista on a 500 gig and Ubuntu on an 80.
First boot of the day WINDOWS wanted to CHECK the file segment addresses and I let it do so. It took two days and a night and said the file segments were all unreadable. I went to bed.
The next day the first boot said 'no boot loader.' I tried again and it made it to the choice of Vista or Ubuntu. I chose Vista and it started loading windows FILES. Page upon page. I haven't CHECKED YET (It's in the other room) I will try ubuntu in awhile.
Any ideas?
Thanks so Much.Busted HD?You are absolutely correct. I borrowed a disc from a friend with a program called 'Spin Right.' It showed several faults with the 500 gig drive. So I called New Egg and they are going to trade me a new drive.

The sun is shining here in southern Ohio. CDEarth sent me an email saying they were refunding the money I was complaining they scammed me out of the other day. I need to thank Geek After Dark if I can find him. I didn't contact them further.

Thanks for all the good advice,
You guys have a lot of power.Hey, it looks like you're gonna end up OK
Thanks for posting back.

No, it isn't...

If you've ever seen an animated cartoon...and know what's involved in creating one...then you wouldn't say an anime video would be "simpler".

Solve : GMX mail file storage/sharing from computer drive?

Answer»

Hi Guys,
I would like your opinion and tech support for this online storage and “drive share” provided by GMX mail. GMX home> http://mail-us.gmx.com/us/cgi/g.fcgi/home (file storage info is down bottom left).
I have been using the mail service for about 6 months and it is quickly becoming my favorite secondary email provider; and, it’s free..!
I’ve downloaded and installed, without any problem the file sharing devices and everything is showing up where it should and makes perfect SENSE to me. OK, so what’s GOING to be the problem in the future?
Anything too easy has to have a catch! Thanks for your attention and keep up the good work and advice, you’re much appreciated by this reader.
Bones
I would have a CD/DVD burned with any data i don't want to lose...just in case.I've been using GMX for about a year now and heve had no problems with the file storage.
I do back up important files to my external hard drive though. Thanks guy's. Yep, I do always back up to my external as anyone should be wise to do. I just wonder what everyone THINKS about GMX and are they going to be around for awhile. They seem to be growing at a decent pace and I want to be able to put a bit more trust in their svc.
Any pros or cons to the windows live online storage? Many are others are available for file storage and sharing.
I really would like to find a TRUSTWORTHY location to share large files (and easy for my recipients).
ThanksAs always in this world, you get what you pay for. How much does GMX cost?

IMHO only a fool trusts mission critical data to a free online data storage service.

Solve : tracking a stolen CD??

Answer»

My friend and i were having an argument and he says that if like a PC game was stolen from like wal-mart, game stop, or just anywhere else then they could track it somehow with like a product KEY, or an activation code or something on ur PC. I thought that they couldn't, well I'm not saying that they couldn't completely its just that they probably WONT. but does anyone know of like say wal-mart or gamestop tracking Cd's down? if anyone knows then sweet because i feel like winning an argument lolI doubt they WOULD have an investigative branch of people doing this 9 to 5 although i'm not discounting the possibilities of being able to do so...
Tell him he owes you a Coffee,,,there is no specific Tracking on a CD itself. for example- every XP CD can accept every XP CD-key, it isn't specially set to use the one on the packaging.

Solve : Can anyone help with my computer problem please??

Answer»

I was surfing the net on my laptop and suddenly got a message from Norton saying I should reboot my computer to finish fixing a threat.
So I did
When it restarted I did a full virus check and it found nothing.
But then I couldn't access internet explorer. Everything else seemed to be working fine, I could sign into MSN MESSENGER (which requires an internet connection), but couldn't get onto internet explorer and links didn't work when I clicked on them.
I did another virus search which revealed nothing and tried to do a system restore but it wouldn't work.
Now, most of the time when I turn in on it doesn't even get as far as the log in page
Other TIMES it does but the ORIGINAL problem persists
Do I have a virus?
How can I fix it?

I can't access any websites to do other virus checks because it won't open internet explorer in the first place. I'm using the family computer at the moment

Thanks in advance for any help offered. I would really really appreciate it. Also, I am not very computer savvy so please speak in baby words for me Will Firefox work?I don't have firefox installed so I don't knowThen, you need to install it, so we know, it's IE problem, or something else. The thing is I can't access the internet in the first place to install it.
Do you not have to get it from online? My only browser is IE, and I can't get on the net on that so I can't get on the net other than MSN which doesn't use a browser
Am I wrong in this assumption? I really don't know much about computers.Let's clarify something first.

Go Start>Run ("Start search" in VISTA).
Type in:
cmd
Click OK (HIT Enter in Vista).

At Command Prompt, type in:
ping www.google.com > ping.txt
Hit Enter.

In Window Explorer navigate to:
C:\Documents and Settings\your_name (C:\Users\your_name in Vista)
Double click on ping.txt to open it in Notepad.
Copy all text, and post it in your next reply.

Solve : Windows Vista Laptop?

Answer»

I was wondering how I could make my laptop just log off when I close the screen instead of it completely shutting it down. I am many times just moving my laptop from upstairs to downstairs and when I shut it I would like it to just log off.In Vista using the shutdown right ARROW at the bottom left there is the logoff option.Hmm, my Vista laptop goes into sleep mode if I close it. I wonder WHETHER there's a preference setting somewhere that would allow you to change the behavior of your laptop.

What version of Vista do you have? What's the make and model of your laptop? Does it immediately shutdown when you close it, or does it need to be closed for a certain length of time before it shuts down?I think it's in the POWER settings, in your control panel. You can tell the computer what you want it to do when you close the screen.

Sorry I can't be of more help: I haven't SEEN a laptop or the Vista Virus for a while.

It says IBM when I turn it on and something about Intel.. that's all I know, really. Is it desktop, or laptop?
Any labels on front panel, BACK panel, any paperwork?Okay, it's a desktop.
It says on front panel:
IBM
Intel Inside
Pentium
Windows Design for Microsoft Windows XP
Net Vista

I can't find the paperwork.
Sorry, I'm not giving you much to work with.Don't worry about it. To be honest what I WOULD do next is remove the hard drive from your computer and try to run it as a slave on another machine to retrieve the file your after... even this might not work but it is most likely to help you out. However to do this you will need to go inside your computer and a screw driver may be required.... lol.

Please wait for a reply from some one like Broni that can talk you through other steps to take first and possibly even this.

If it comes to it though it will involve removing the cover from the side of your computer, removing the RECTANGLE thing from your computer which will need un-screwing and then FLICKING a couple of the switches on it to turn it into slave mode and then PLUGGING it into another machine by the ribbon connectors...

If it comes to this it would be best to research it on the internet first or even better get someone you know who has done it before to do it.We really don't have enough info about your computer to work on.
Do you feel like you're up to removing hard drive, or maybe you have friend, who can help you out...

Solve : June poll?

I backup any important docs, pics and data on a second physical hard drive.

dl65 Quote from: GX44 on June 04, 2007, 06:01:10 AM

I use a 500GB external HDD.
All my important data goes on this, very handy

When I was a naive nooblet and didn't think I would get a virus because "my system is safe," I managed to go through 4 complete reformat/install Windows in the space of a month before I finally decided to start backing up my data.

External HDD's fail as well...even newer ones. Add another layer to your strategy.Quote from: patio on June 04, 2007, 05:33:00 PM

Very true... This topic got me thinking about backing up more often/more ways and last night I backed up using DVD's.

I just prefer dragging whatever I need to my external HD... I'm lazy that way. Guess I'll pay for it one of these days

There are free automatic backup software programs.

Maybe, if people know of any good ones, they should post it

(I use the one that comes with Vista now, but I used to use this great free one that I got from www.download.com but I forgot the name) I wish I could select multiple options.

Agreed. Depends on the requirements and the value of the data.I just recently began backing up my data, and I have over 4GB of data to backup, and that would take 6 CD-Rs so I just use DVD+Rs. I used to do it on a 128MB flash disk that failed recently.My strategy is as FOLLOWS;

Acronis is scheduled to run every Sunday night at 3 AM.

The .tib files are saved to partition #4 on HDD #2. This partition is excluded from defrag, diskcheck and any other scans which i found out the hard way is a good idea.

On the first Monday of each month i burn 2 copies of the latest backups to DVD's...one to store here and one off site.

Worst case scenario if i lose both SATA HDD's at once (unlikely but not impossible) i am at worst 3 weeks away from back to normal for my whole system. This is on my workbench machine which sees the most action...program testing etc.

My other machines have similar but not as aggresive strategies but are done regularly.

Another good tip i saw on another Forum i frequent is the user BACKS up his My Documents folder to CDRW's once a week. But i have no need for that.
another good idea, is to move the My Documents folder to a different partition or hard drive. (SINCE that is the default store for everything.) That way if something screws up the OS and you need to format, you don't lose everything. Just the stuff on the OS partition.
That's something I learned the hard way, too.Quote from: michaewlewis on June 05, 2007, 07:21:45 PM

Agree. I moved My Documents to a non-OS partition. I think another benefit of doing this is less fragmentation of the OS partition and speedier defragmentation of that partition.

My main backup media is an external HDD. CD and flash drive also occasionally get thrown into the mix.Which reminds me to run Auslogics... thanks

Reasons I use a separate partition for just backup:
It works great for making an archive of your files
Its faster than making archives on a CD
Its closer to you (in a sense) that you dont have to go get the CD
I can schedule regular backups easily, without having to insert a disk
Some protection against viruses

But NO protection against disk failure... (unless the data on drive C WENT corrupt and the extended partition stayed intact) Yeah, I back up all my flash drives and MP3 players on another partition. I just back everything up on my external hard drive like very month so it's more or less out of date.I use an external HDD, and sometimes a flash drive as well My flash drive holds 2GB, it has its uses.
My brother got it for me as a Christmas present, it was a really well priced one. oooh... where are the moserators? i found a poll glitch. i voted once (for other ) and then went to the next page and thought i had forgotten to vote, but upon voting once again i realised it went from 1 to 2 votes with my first and 2 to 3 with my second bugz!

Solve : Does Anybody Care About Anything??

Answer»

Does Anybody Care About Anything?

When warnings about present and future dangers are given,
it seems nobody cares and just go on with livin'.

Example:

Quote

...there is no user intervention that has to occur
before machines can be hacked.

This was buried in today's news. If I were to post this in the right place on this forum it would be ignored or somebody who say it is just not possible.

Yeah, being positive is OK. But to denial or ignore danger?

Anybody care?
it's called sensationalism. It's not that nobody cares, it's that everybody knows otherwise.

The fact that you insist that every computer is susceptible to hacking from all angles isn't debated. What's debated is how it's any different then saying "YOU COULD GET STABBED ON YOUR WAY TO WORK!". It's possible, but the probability is so unlikely as to be null.

hackers don't actively scan IPs looking for vulnerabilities. and those that do are 2-bit command prompt script kiddies who could see a vulnerability in a open door.

And even those hackers that do actively scan IPs (not personally, but usually with the help of a program) won't get an ICMP response from any windows machine with a firewall enabled, (not even windows firewall). as such, to them, the machine is invisible.

The thing is, there aren't hackers looking to perform identity theft. It's because people gave them an open opportunity to do so, OR, because the person was the victim of a phishing scam that took their information.

first, you didn't even post the source of the information, nor did you provide any part of the story that jives with the headline. Are we supposed to blindly believe everything in a newspaper even without the actual article? They may as well just publish the headlines, and we simply accept each one as fact. The thing is: the news is a product. a product they are trying to sell. publishing articles that go directly against what people think or believe is how they do that successfully, because people WANT to read it to see if perhaps they should change the way they do things. But half the time it isn't even factual information, it's confirmation bias at work, which I keep seeing over and over.Quote
This was buried in today's news.
What publication?
Thank you for your well written response. BC.

My concern is that people do not even look to see if the threat is real or not. Why is that?

It is hard for me to write. So I am going to give another partial quote for Network World that is along the same line
Quote
Eric Schultze, who served as a FOUNDING member of the Trustworthy Computing team at Microsoft and was a security director for the vendor, says the MS08-068 patch that Microsoft released as part of its monthly Patch Tuesday announcement closes a flaw he first tested at Microsoft in 2001.

“Back in 2001 there was an exploit tool released called SMBRelay and a gentleman by the name of Sir Dystic wrote it,” says Schultze, CTO for Shavlik Technologies. “I was at Microsoft and I tested it and said ‘holy crap, this works.’ I addressed it with Microsoft but they buried their head in the sand. But it looks like they may have finally fixed it.”

You can go to the Network World web site and find information about the last patch Microsoft put out.

http://www.networkworld.com/

What Eric Schultze states is a serious matter.
Either he is just promoting his own COMPANY
-- or --
Microsoft has not shown much interest in security.

Thanks again for your reply. I would be happy if everyone would just read this and then make an informed decision about how they will surf the net. I'm not sure I found the exact article you speak of, Geek- I searched that site, and found "Internet Explorer Flaw bigger then expected"- not sure if that's what you mean, but it is recent.

EDIT: I think I found it-
"Microsoft patch tuesday has three on critical list"

the way I see it, although all the version from 5 through IE8 beta were affected, it hadn't been exploited in that time period, UNTIL microsoft released a patch for IE7 that documented the problem; then some adventurous fellow tried the same exploit in the older versions, and lo and behold it worked!

I stopped using Internet Explorer ages ago, but I used to defend it when I did use it for some reason, which is why I can understand some people reluctance to switch browsers. But IE has been subject to these types of flaws for ages, which is why I stopped using it.

I think we can all agree it would be best to have a completely bug-free and secure operating system and programs, but the reality is it's practically impossible to write bug-free software of anything but the most trivial kind, and a lot of security vulnerabilities come from bugs in the software (although some are mere oversights)Quote
EDIT: I think I found it-
"Microsoft patch tuesday has three on critical list"

You found it! Notice that now the news about about Steve's Jobs health has become more important the the dubious patch the Microsoft released on Tuesday.

Well, I do hope he gets better.

Now that brings up a question.
Is using Apple OS 10 safer that using any version of Windows?

Of course, maybe Windows has more than five times as many users.I'd say it's safer, but at the same time, one has to look at what's possible.

Since a lot of them run on Intel, they can run x86 assembly, which could open up some dual-platform abilities if there are any clever virus writers out there.

But as you said- most people use windows, which is why it is so strongly targeted. If everybody moved to OS10 because it was safer, it wouldn't be- all the virus writers/hackers would be looking at OSX for vulnerabilities, and they would likely find some, considering there would be so many people looking for them. You logic is has a good foundation.

Now let me introduce another vector here.
The concept of expansion of a system

Take any system, MS, Apple or anything related to information security.
Now what happens if you increase the number of people using the system.
Do you have to modify the design of the system to maintain security?
Many would say no. If it is secure with a few, it will be secure with many.
True? False? Maybe? If no authoritative answer comes forth, is it a non-issue?

Because nobody answers a question,
that must make it OK!
Or
It is a danger until proven safe!

Is either based in sound logic?

What I don't know can not hurt me!
Would you agree?

I care about something ! I care that the world is not appalled by a much televised holocaust perpetrated by the Israel's might on the Palestinian people.

How could we as a 21st century people not be outraged by this pogrom .
How could we not realize that for a people who QUITE rightly tell their sons
and their sons' sons that they must never forget the 6000000 of the holocaust
are today doing the same thing to another group of people.

I am left to wonder :are all men born equal , or are some more equal than others?
PEACE

Well the way I think it works is, because more people are using it, there are that many more possibilities to find flaws in the way the OS works when there are more people using it.

Mac OS, for example; indisputably has flaws that nobody knows about- going with your style of questions- if nobody knows about them, are they still flaws? The thing is- if nobody knows about them, they can't be fixed, and if MS (or Apple, or whomever) releases a patch to fix it, hackers/virus writers will dissect the patch to see what they are patching, so as to take advantage of unpatched systems.

In some cases (very few) a malware author discovers the flaw before anybody else; and thus they can take advantage of it. Usually it takes some time for anybody else to even become aware of the flaw; people complain of slowness, AV companies get involved, etc. and finally Microsoft is informed. Contrary to common opinion, Microsoft is actually fairly quick to release patches once they know about them; but how many computers will be infected before the patch is released? Some might say it wouldn't really matter, since MS will usually include it in it's next "malicious software removal tool" to remove it. The concern being, of course- if the malware was designed to do so, it could harvest information from those machines it infected.

This is one of the reasons I have a good hardware firewall am wary of what I download. Even with AV programs- you can only detect and remove what is already known (or slight mutations of what is known)- as such it's best to keep it off the computer in the first place.

Solve : how do i send a document from works word so that others can read??

Answer»

when i send a document that i wrote on my MICROSOFT works word processer it can not be opened something about a .wps thank you You mean the recipient can't open it, right? The obvious question here is, what software does the recipient have that can open .wps files?

If they can't open .wps files, then you need to SAVE your document in a different format. Try .rtf (Rich text format). cid 49 says thank you for your help soybean I had the same problem for years. Works has been on every computer I've owned, but it seems it's not on anybody else's. I finally went to a free software called Open Office, it's free at openoffice.org. You can move your document to open office using "copy and paste." From Open Office you can export your file as a PDF which anyone with access to the internet can read with acrobat reader (also free), and they won't be able to change your file. JeldenYes, getting OpenOffice and saving files as PDF is a viable alternative. Another option for creating PDF documents, including from Works, is to install PDF converter software such as PrimoPDF (freeware). Once installed, it's added to your Windows system as a "printer"; in other WORDS, if you go to Control PANEL, and open Printers and Faxes, PrimoPDF would appear as a printer. It can be selected as the printer when printing from Works or any application. Then, the PDF file could be emailed to someone.

Trying to figure out what you are doing here. Windows 7 should be activated against Microsofts WebServer over the internet or over a phone call to Microsoft after the installation. Are you using some sort of software tool for activating Windows 7? Because any such tools as far as I know are illegal!

Solve : Is this a good deal or piece of junk?

I UNFORTUNATELY didnt use Paypal at the time because I didnt like anything that was directly connected to my savings or checking acct etc. My brother had his paypal hacked and someone drained his acct and I ended up having to help him pay rent that month. He showed me the transactions on his statement and had to fight to try to get his money back at Paypals infancy years ago before the better security of today. Today I have one associated to an e-mail that is not used for anything else and a pin generator with my acct to protect it and rarely at all use it.

Back then I would instead get bank checks as for my bank allowed for 1 free bank check per day and since my workplace at the time was on the same block as the bank it was CONVENIENT to walk in at 2pm on 15 min break and get a check printed and mail that to the ebay merchant.

I bought and sold lots of items mostly collectable items that cant malfunction because they are static objects and are genuine on ebay, and I have avoided the fakes as a specialist in what I COLLECT, but for some reason computer hardware has been an issue. So when I think BC made the statement on ANOTHER post earlier this YEAR of buying a used hard drive is like buying used underwear, I can relate to this on ebay with the drive that sounded like a rock tumbler..lol

Solve : MSI FUZZY - Desktop MB that handles Mobile CPU's?

Answer»

In my travels LOOKING up the T2400 CORE Duo Mobile Processor that I may be installing into a laptop as an upgrade to the Celeron M, I found a link to this INTERESTING ITX motherboard that accepts a Socket-P Mobile processor and someone ended up building a desktop computer with a Mobile CPU.

To me, unless you are building a small computer or are looking for low power and low heat emission system, you might as well go with a regular desktop CPU with better performance and mATX or ATX motherboard.

Its name of FUZZY to me made me laugh,.... MAYBE that was its intent.

I have one ITX motherboard at home and its a Zotac Socket AM3, and I use it for my WHS, but its running just as powerful as a mATX or ATX system would since its a Desktop CPU Dual-core running in it. I bought it because it was on a sale that placed the ITX cheaper than mATX at the time and I didnt need the extra PCI slots etc.

http://www.msi.com/product/ipc/Fuzzy-945GME3.htmlThere have been a few boards allowing you to run laptop CPUs on them. They made more sense a few years back, especially when Pentium 4/Athlon 64 were the mainstream CPUs, because the Pentium M performed better and used much less power than the Pentium 4 desktop CPU. The AMD Turion was also an alternative to the desktop Athlons as power usage was much lower.
Nowadays it's not really a major thing as desktop CPUs, especially at the lower end or the special versions like the T and S series from Intel, use little ENOUGH power that a mobile chip doesn't save much.
If I remember correctly the Fuzzy was billed as more of an industrial board, for specialised uses.

I just BUILT my FIRST computer, I'm quite happy with the way it turned out but I'm getting these weird lines across my screen EVERY couple seconds to couple minutes. Solve : Setting up Blackberry with Exchange email?

Answer»

Hi guys

Sorry Im not sure where to post this (apologies if this is a repost). I was wondering if anyone can help me with getting a blackberry setup with EXCHANGE emails? We have a BES server here and added the user to it. The BES service has been activated with the service provider. When on the phone, after selecting exchange activation, entering in the email ADDRESS and activation code it seems to run for about 10 -15 minutes then returns with the error;

THE BLACKBERRY ENTERPRISE SERVER HAS NOT RESPONDED TO YOUR ACTIVATION REQUEST. AN ERROR MAY HAVE OCCURRED OR A MAIL CLENT RULE.
YOU HAVE NOT YET BEEN ADDED TO THE BLACKBERRY ENTERPRISE SERVER.

We have tried deleting the account from our BES server and rebooting the bes server but to no avail. The next steps we are going to try is security wiping the phone and TRYING again. Does anyone have any advice?

Any help is greatly appreciated!
I'd suggest you want to contact your Exchange administrator. My exchange admin doesnt know how to fix this one either. We have been working together to try and get it sorted.
The security wipe didnt help either.

thanks. Here are some DETAILED instructions. Re: MS Exchange email on blackberry 8900Have you tried connecting the phone to the BES via USB and doing it that way? It's usually quicker than doing it over the air anyway, and often more reliable.HI

Thanks for the replies - we have tried connecting the phone via USB but we still get an error stating that the BES account was not created. Im not sure if there is an issue with our actual BES server, as I am having the same problem with 3 people so far.
Our administrator has checked and says the settings are all correct.

I see. So, you have created the user's account, and then you right click on the user in Blackberry manager, click Assign device, choose the Blackberry, and then what exact error message do you get? Are all 3 people you've encountered the problem with new users?
For reference I'm using Blackberry Manager 4.1, so as it's quite old there's a chance my UI is different to yours. If so, I may not be able to help much further as I'm not familiar with any newer versions if they're different.

Solve : Western Digital Backup Harddrive Problems?

Answer»

Hi, I have a 10 month old WD My Passport which I use to backup my files, attached by cable.
It has worked fine until now.

After backing up last week, I took it out before it was safe to eject.
I've done this before and never had issues.

Now today though, it is not recognized.
When I insert the USB, the first time it said not recognized.
Successive attempts, I just hear the noise which happens when a USB is inserted followed by ANOTHER new noise. It never displays an icon at the bottom, and under Computer-Devices it is not shown.

I restarted the computer with no luck.
Any advice?Have you tried the drive on another machine? Do you see anything in device manager (right click computer and choose manage) like an unidentified device, or one with a yellow exclamation mark?Post a screen capture of Disk Management...i'll bet it's listed as RAW due to being dis-connected 1 too many times without "Safely Remove" being used...Quote from: Calum on October 09, 2013, 09:39:07 AM

Have you tried the drive on another machine? Do you see anything in device manager (right click computer and choose manage) like an unidentified device, or one with a yellow exclamation mark?

1) I am connected to another PC with vPC. I tried connecting while logged into vPC and the first time it said driver installation failed, but the second time it worked. I was able to access my files.

2) Right clicked computer>manage and saw this image attached (PSC)

-You see the arrow? I clicked it and GOT this (psc1)

-So I clicked enable it said it was disabled and OFFERED option to enable. I did and was told by WINDOWS it was unable to enable.

-I went from the general tab to driver and am offered the options to: update, disable, uninstall

-Note: When I remove the WD from the USB the "USB Mass Storage" from Computer>Universal Serial Bus controllers is gone

Solve : Laptop starting in recovery mode - caused by power surge??

Answer»

Hi,

Sorry I'm in the wrong section, not sure what category this issue fits best under. I may also word myself a bit awkwardly, as my English computer/tech VOCABULARY isn't exactly top notch. >.>

I'll try to describe the issue as accurate as possible. I'm posting on behalf of my son who's on vacation with a computer that seems to be in a spot of trouble, so some details may be lacking.

My son has an Asus G55VW with Win 7 that shows the Asus Recovery Wizard when he turns it on.
We think this might be caused by a small power surge. He had set it to charge overnight, unaware that where he's staying they use a main switch that turns off all electricity in the living room when they go to bed, thus it had not been able to charge. In the morning, they flipped the switch on while the laptop was still plugged in, and we suspect this may have caused the problem (mind you, neither of us have that much of a CLUE when it comes to these things).

The recovery wizard gives him some options, and we hoped he COULD use Safe Mode to rescue important documents before running the recovery options, but seems to be no go. When he selected Safe mode, he was sent back to square one. His main concern at this moment, his losing important files, so he hasn't dared touching other options. (We will have a chat about back-up options later..)

So, here's hoping someone might have advise for us. To sum up the actual questions:

-Is it likely this was related to the laptop being plugged in when the main power switch was turned on, and if so, what would the nature of the damage likely be?
-Could this be caused by something else?
-Is it likely that his files can be RESCUED?

Obviously we don't know if the computer will work again/if the rescue wizard will run at all, since he's waiting while we try to find out if his files are lost.

-Is it likely this was related to the laptop being plugged in when the main power switch was

No, not very likely.
Quote
-Could this be caused by something else?
Yes, a premature HARDWARE failure.

Quote
-Is it likely that his files can be rescued?
Yes, but some risk is involved. The Hard drive can be removed and made a slave to another computer.

Recommendation. Contact then vendor of the computer. There may still be some warranty answer.

Thanks, I'll pass it along, and we'll see how it turns out.

Solve : security issue?

Answer»

hi there didnt know where to post this??

I think someone is getting into my laptop but all deny it so I was hoping for some pointers in the right direction. I would like a PROGRAMME that can take a photo of when someone inputs the password on start up even if the password is correct
.. can some help me with this?

many thanksChange the password...i have done it doesn't feel right is there any other way that i can monitor when the machine gets switched on? Yes. Here is a very easy way. No computer skill needed.
Get a hidden camera with motion detector. One KIND looks like a small digital clock. As soon as anybody gets into then FIELD of view, it starts taking video and audio and saving it as a AVI file on a iny memory chip. You can later watch its with a media player.

The hidden camera is not part of you computer. It is low-cost and very RELIABLE and most people never think about it. Inside your own space it is legal to use. Of course, posting the video could violate the others person's rights.

Amy body who wants to get one for a legitimate purpose can fin it on the Internet.
Here is one of many, many such vendors.
http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/category/hidden+cameras/best+hidden+cameras.do
From a search for Hidden Carena
i was hoping for something that can show them in front of the screen mind you it is a good idea with the hidden cameraMost all laptops have a forward facing camera, and you could just switch to (if you laptop supports it like my Asus or my GFs Toshiba) facial recognition mode. That (especially coupled with a password) is the best security you'll really get on your laptop.

If you want to see the person, there are only a few AVENUES that I know of. What Geek-9pm said, or possible getting some recording software (such as iSpy) which can be launched on start-up, and will record the feed from your laptops camera. VLC can also be used for this IN THEORY!!! However, that will not fix your existing security issue.

Solve : Good laptop yet poor video?

Answer»

Hello,

I have have a new laptop which has an i3-2348M 2.3 GHz PROCESSOR as well as an Intel HD 3000 graphics card yet its video performance is bad.

Why do I say this? Well, a lot of videos which are perfectly fine show up as if they have been edited by someone who made them look like they were paintings rather than videos. The depth is less. It's hard to put into words but it's almost as if it's drawn instead of filmed.

I also get loss of detail; it's (continuously) "pixelated" where it's like looking at a retro video game. Mario from the 1980s instead of the one we know today.

There's also this thing that happens where say you have a tube which is only lit from one side where the right side is in darkness? Well, there isn't a gradual move from black to whatever color the tube is. Instead there is a blocky LINE of black, then a blocky line of dark grey, then a blocky line of lighter gray and so on until you have the lit part of the tube.

Again it's hard to put into words but if this is a common thing I'm sure it will be recognized.

Why is this the case? I've calibrated the screen carefully four times, I've got the maximum resolution of the screen... Is it just because the screen is of inferior quality? Is it a driver ISSUE?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

1. What is make & model of laptop?
2. What is screen resolution you have set?
3. Are you using Windows 8?Here's the info:

Acer Aspire V3-771

1600x900

Windows 8http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Acer-Aspire-V3-771G-Notebook.74597.0.html
Scroll down to Display.
Seems like what you see is normal for this model. It's odd as they are critical of the screen's quality yet later on in the review say that it functions fine as a desktop REPLACEMENT which in my opinion it doesn't. I MEAN not as far as video is concerned.

Anyway, thanks for having taken time to reply. I think I'll take the laptop to a local computer shop and talk about it with them to see if it can be fixed.

Solve : Free Older Computers for School...??

Answer»

My school occasionally gets OLDER computers from Social Security offices. I was wondering if anyone might know of other resources for donated computers to schools...
Any HELP is greatly appreciated. Here are some ideas, but yhou may already know.

1. Retail stores. Sometimes that give customers discounts for old computers that are not suitable for resale. The do so mostly as a entrancement for new buyers to take the leap.Contact Best Buy, Staples or other stores in your area.

2. Nonprofits that try to recycle stuff. The Salvation Army is one. Looks for others in your area. One source is the National Cristina Foundation. These want to get money, but might let you have their junk.

3. Silicon Valley Recycling Used Technology. MAYBE there is sxome kind of work like this where you live.

Or, start up your own group to entice people to give up their old stuff. Check out your local PTA, if you have not already.

http://www.ptotoday.com/pta-parent-involvement

EDIT: Here is a quote:
Quote

There are many reasons to donate or recycle your used equipment:
75% of the fossil fuels and energy used by a computer are actually consumed during MANUFACTURING. Extending the computer's lifespan through reuse means more return on that initial environmental COST.
Every computer dumped into a landfill represents a missed opportunity to provide technology and tools to individuals and organizations across the digital divide.
.... Unfortunately, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s Plug in to eCycling program, only 15 to 20 percent of computers and other electronic devices are being recycled in the United States

sorry, the government is shut down down, so the link may not last very long.

Somewhere I saw something LIKE this:

About 20% of Americans are retired or can not get work.
Another 20% are on disability.
Near 50% have jobs in government.
So... that leaves just 10% doing real work.

Would really appreciate your help. (and..yes, I've LEARNED NOT to change anything again!)...
Thanks very much...If I understand your problem correctly, you should be able to fix this by right-clicking on each of the file types and selecting open-with and chose an application to handle them, and select the check box for Windows to remember to use this program in the future for opening say PDF's with Acrobat READER etc.I can't find an application to handle many files...LET, NWS, SIG, PDF, HCR, DOC. I try Adobe Reader, Nero SMART Start Essentials, Window PHOTO Viewer, Word Pad, Microsoft Office 2010, Word Viewer and Word. .... None of them will open the files I listed.

09/16/2013 09:48 PM Mozilla Firefox 24.0 Final

Java just updated again a few days ago.

Are they in some sort of race to see who can push out more updates in a calendar year or what! It got old a while back. Secure your **** software and leave us alone for a while!!!!!

/rantFirefox updates on a quicker CADENCE. Their releases are planned/scheduled, at least the major versions are.

Java release Update 40 (the current update) 2013-09-10, the previous release was Update 25, Released "2013-06-18". That's a fairly long time for what has become a prominent attack vector. Even so, the update notes seem to mention primarily support and features for Linux ARM and only a few security considerations, mostly related to exposing more security capabilities through some NEWER APIs. (JavaFX).

Quote from: evilfantasy on September 16, 2013, 11:07:17 PM

Secure your **** software and leave us alone for a while!!!!!

While I can see where you are coming from with this, It's easier said than done. It's the equivalent of asking Doctors and scientists to come up with a vaccine that will 'secure' (immunize) us from all viruses and bacteria. It's just not possible. In order to create a vaccine you need a sample of the infectant- pretty similar situation for Fighting security problems. There are some techniques that can be used to try to cut down on things such as Buffer Overflows and other more easily mitigated problems, but sometimes the problems are so non-obvious that to command they be fixed before they are even discovered is to essentially demand clairvoyance.
The "problem" is that when a Programmer writes software, they USUALLY write it originally considering what a well-intentioned user will be doing; for example, a routine that reads in XML and parses values using a library might assume the XML is valid and simply Error out if not. We don't generally start writing code with the express intention of considering how malicious inputs would affect our logic, because if it doesn't work to begin with, how secure it is doesn't matter. Instead we add "security" afterwards. And nobody can ever have enough understanding of all the facets of development to be able to point at, say, the specific method being used to load an XML file as being a vulnerability, because it turns out that due to how that library is structured and how it's API is based on a former JSON api, you can pass a JSON file directly to it and execute arbitrary Javascript code within the context of the application when the application loads the XML (that is just an example).

It's basically like building a boat. No matter how careful you are, you can never be sure how waterproof it is until you stick it in water. And even if it floats for a day, or a month, or years, somebody might come along and find a a weak truss or beam, and to the bottom it goes.Good reply BC. My main gripe is with Mozilla. I can understand the slight annoyance of updating to a new version v23.5 > v24.0. It's all of the little security and stability fixes in between that get to me. They now allow for 'No Restart' add-on installs. Why can't they figure out a 'No Restart' fix like when going from v23.1 to v23.2?

Java updates have slowed down. Let's hope it stays that way for a while.Quote from: evilfantasy on September 17, 2013, 08:11:17 AM

Same reason you can put fuzzy dice on your rear-view mirror without stopping and shutting off your car but you have to shut it off to replace the engine block

The tricky part is of course that we aren't talking about add-on bits of Javascript, but rather the Executable behind the whole shebang. On windows, you cannot delete or replace a running executable with another. The closest you can get would be to rename the running executable to some other name, save the updated version, launch it, and have the existing executable exit.

The tricky part is that you simply cannot "switch" from running one executable to another- it's not even really a CASE of complexity, but even with the same program it's like trying to jump from page 300 of harry potter to page 301 of Sun Tzu's The Art of War- It just won't make sense. Even if it was possible and all the complex part of actually updating all code segment pointers in memory to point to the new executable was doable, you've still got the issue that the new executable is now dealing with the old executable's data.

Let's imagine a simple program with a structure that tracks update information while it is running, perhaps from a remote database:

Code: [Select]struct UpdateInfo{
char* Version;
char* ProgramName;
char* UpdateURL;
int UpdateType;
}

Now imagine a version .x is released to address a security issue, which is dealt with by adding a Security Token to each UpdateInfo structure:

Code: [Select]struct UpdateInfo{
char* Version;
char* ProgramName;
char* UpdateURL;
int UpdateType;
int SecurityToken;
}

Updating a running program would be impossible; the existing program uses a structure that is 16 Bytes long (on 32-bit), whereas this structure uses an extra 4 bytes.

This is going to cause problems. Imagine if the program normally keeps an array of these structures in memory, the old one will be laid out sequentially- If the program was to suddenly be updated with new code, the new code will try to access the values incorrectly, because it assumes the structure has a SecurityToken field. Essentially, all the data get's corrupted, and the program needs a restart anyway.

To make matters even worse, Even compiling the same source with the same compiler can result in compiler-generated structures to DIFFER in size and arrangement enough to make this a problem.

Well here is an answer as to why so many updates. Keeping up with the Joneses...

Solve : Help buying new pc....?

ok im basicly clueless with pc's, was looking to buy one and upto now iv chosen this zoostorm desktop pc for £699 i want the pc for light gameing eg not for top games like Battlefield4 and recording HD gameplay off my console but id like to know if i wanted to play top end games could i upgrade it? What questions should i ask the manufacturer for this?; • Intel® Core™ i7-4770 3.4GHz QUAD Core Haswell Processor
• 16GB DDR3 1333 RAM
2TB hard drive
• DVDRW drive
• NVidia GT640 2GB Graphics Card
• Microsoft Windows 8 Home Premium
• 6 x USB 2.0 Ports (2 FRONT, 4 rear)
• 1 x DVI Port
• 1 x VGA Port
• 1 x HDMI Port
• Amazing HD Audio on board
• Stylish finger print resistance case
• Wireless b/g/n network card
I have so many questions and any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Ok i know the graphics card isnt good but is this a good pc? i have never heard of the zoostorm make so i am unsure about purchasing it, i have read they can use cheap parts eg the make of the ram/HD the fan. Does anyone no if this is true and does it matter if the Ram for eg is a cheap make because it still sez its16g just like a good make will say 16g? is the NVidia GT640 2GB Graphics Card dedicated and HD? is does not say, if not can i upgrade it to HD/dedicated is DDR3 1333 RAM good? Is there anything i should ask about and havnt? im totally clueless thxI tend to avoid Zoostorm as a brand as they usually use a cheap, low end power supply which not only won't be reliable but will prevent you upgrading components such as the graphics card without swapping the PSU as well. Zoostorm are, if I recall correctly, Ebuyer's "home brand". Nothing particularly wrong with them for cheap home or office machines, but they're not always the last word in reliability, PERFORMANCE, or indeed value for money.

The GT 640 is a dedicated, low end card. Not sure what you mean when you say "HD? is does not say, if not can i upgrade it to HD/dedicated" - if you mean is the card capable of HD resolutions, yes, graphics cards have been capable of this for over a decade -in fact before HD was even a marketing buzzword - so no WORRIES there.
What's your budget for the PC? For £700 I'm pretty sure you can do better than that, if you let us know how much you want to spend we may be able to recommend something more suited for your needs.

Solve : Yahoo e-Mail interface - Sort by Sender (A - Z) missing?

Answer»

Went to CHECK my Yahoo e-mail for first time in about 2 weeks or so and normally have been able to sort by sender alpha numeric 0-9 A-Z and this sort feature is nowhere to be found in sort options.

Frustrated with this feature lacking layout I installed Thunderbird to my computer and set it up to access my Yahoo e-mail. I used Thunderbird a few years ago, but had no real need to use it because back then yahoo still had features that MADE it a good interface for e-mail. But the new interface they have now, its almost like the advertisers paid yahoo to get rid of the sort by sender so that their ads are mixed in with important e-mail causing you to have to read each subject line etc.

Now with Thunderbird, I can work with an interface to my e-mail that is more classic and feature rich vs featureless.

Anyone else using Thunderbird or another mail program with Yahoo because their web interface is crap now?

Are there any better than Thunderbird that I should check out vs going with Thunderbird?

I mainly went with it because I have used in the past to access my Yahoo e-mail with POP3 config.

Solve : google translate?

Answer»

I am a computer dinosaur, an OLD fart. I have tried using google translate, and it translates my mail fine, problem is I don't know how to EMAIL it to a FRIEND in Hungary, would appreciate some help. This friend's wife translated our mail, but she passed away a couple of years ago, and now I have no way to communicate with him.

will really appreciate some help.

BrianType your English message into the left hand box; the target language "TRANSLATION" appears in the right hand box. When it is complete, click the "select all" icon under the right hand box (the ONE that looks like a page with lines on it) and then right click the Hungarian text and select "copy". Now you can right click in an empty email and select "paste".

thanks salmon, I'll give it a try.

Solve : iGoogle gone?

Answer»

Has anyone who liked iGoogle found an alternative they like? I started using Protopage about a month AGO, and PRETTY soon got used to it, so that I didn't REALLY notice when the Google product went away. I also tried igHome and Mystartpage but found various irritations.
You're right ...igHome is IRRITATING...gonna try Protopage next.

More Choices...ProtoPage is an improvement...but still too many glitches for my liking.
Gonna try a few more.

Solve : Google Talk Invisibility Issue?

Answer»

Quote

Oops! You are not invisible because you're logged into Google Talk from another client, device, or location that doesn't support invisibility.
The message I always get from Gmail Chat when I'm on my computer on Gmail. I WANT to be invisible so most people don't chat me but I can chat a few people if I want.

I don't know what the other device or client can be. On my IPHONE I have Gmail CONNECTED to Mail, Gmail, Google Hangouts and Mo+ (a Google Talk/Voice client). But I still get the message when all those apps are not running (except the email ones check for email every 10-30 mins). I get it when my iPhone is powered off too. I have used the sign out all other sessions FUNCTION in Gmail and that doesn't help.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

Solve : Win 8.1 upgrade smooth until logon surprise?

Answer»

So I got bit by this Windows 8.1 trap linked below. And realized it after a reboot when my original password didnt work. Said some choice words when I realized what Microsoft did. Now undoing the Windows Live Logon. I tried to skip this step in the 8.1 upgrade from 8.0 on the new laptop and should have researched this first. But at LEAST there is a way to undo this after getting tricked into this local to Live credential swap.

I am really struggling to not just SAY screw it and blow Windows 8 away and install 7. Forcing myself to stick with 8 on this brand new laptop. But crap like this just really ticks me off.

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/quick-tip-change-to-a-local-account-in-windows-81/

On top of this the new ASUS laptop came with McAfee bundled on it which was the first thing to get uninstalled immediately, then went to install Microsoft Security Essentials on Win 8 and SORRY, you cant install to Windows 8, you need to go with Windows Defender instead Frustrating! I haven't had this problem. My MS Account password is about a thousand times more secure than any password I use locally anyway. And I need to use it to sign into Visual STUDIO (for Preview release feedback stuff) as well as the Developer Account and a few other things, So I just used my already existent Hotmail login information when I first installed Windows 8.

Windows Defender on Windows 8 is a relabelled and updated Security Essentials.

Solve : Why Windows developers maske it easy for Trojans??

Answer»

Really, that is t is not my question. Somebody else said it and it has been echoed on many other sites.

Key phrase: "Can not delete System Volume Information"
Articles apply to Windows XP, 7 and 8.
Just one of many such...

System Volume Information can be write protected in suvh a way that even Linux has a hard time.It is almost impossible to destroy it. Why did they do that? Simple answer is that the thing PART of system restore.

Granted, users should not be deleting IMPORTANT files or FOLDERS. Yest they often cam. However, the "System Volume Information" is some kind of sacred thing that can only be destroyed by a partition format. Or so it seems.

Some have said you have to destroy lit with Linux. I read that on a forum run by Microsoft. Otherwise, you have to edit then registry, they said.

Well, I found out how to destroy it. Format the partition.
Still, I would like to know more about this --
if it can be explained in 200 words or less. And how does this make it easy for Trojans... ? ?Quote from: patio on November 12, 2013, 12:06:30 PM

And how does this make it easy for Trojans... ? ?
Using Avast I got some items in 'System Volume Information' and could not be deleted. It seems others have had this kind of issue also.
Quote
....Avast has picked up the Win32:Adware-gen virus in the "System Volume Information" folder. However regardless of whether I scan in safe mode, in a boot-time scan or just within normal windows-XP AVAST reports that it cannot delete, move or rename the file
The file locaton is
C:\System Volume Information\restore{07AAAC-1E84-4982-B148-C6D063D1AA98\A0003837.msi\icon.icon.exe
The error message is
The Operation is not supported for this type of Archive
Cannt process "C:\System Volume Information\restore{07AAAC-1E84-4982-B148-C6D063D1AA98\A0003837.msi\icon.icon.exe " ...
Cannot Remove Trojan Win32
The Avast forum did not, IMO, give a quick and easy answer to the problem. It would seem the Trojan creators have got Windows by the tail. Just put it into the 'System Volume Information' and nobody can get rid of it.
What do you think?

You already answered the question of how it got there. The Trojan did not put it into the System Volume Information Folder; The System Restore Service did.

System Restore checkpointed and a Trojan was in one of the monitored locations, so it got saved as part of the checkpoint.

Avast can view the contents of the folder, just as you can; run a command prompt as administrator and you can easily view the contents of the folder. You can even change or delete the contents of the folder. I don't know why Avast would have issues deleting the files.

Quote
Cannot Remove Trojan Win32

The Error message makes it pretty clear. It has NOTHING to do with the file being in System Volume Information at all:

Code: [Select]The Operation is not supported for this type of Archive
Cannt process "C:\System Volume Information\restore{07AAAC-1E84-4982-B148-C6D063D1AA98\A0003837.msi\icon.icon.exe "[b][/b]

The Error is because Avast does not support deleting files from .MSI installers. IT has nothing to do with System Volume Information.

the .msi is probably an installer for a piece of software that installs adware in addition to it's typical complement. Why they DECIDED to mention anything about a Trojan I haven't a clue, considering they quite mention it is a Win32:Adware-gen that is causing the issue.

Quote

Uh, actually, it gives several.

It failed to delete the file because it's inside an MSI file and Avast's MSI support does not include removing files, only reading them.

Thanks, BC.
That Avast thread was hard for me to follow. It seems others had the same problem. The solution is to remove, the virus, make a new checkpoint, delete all older checkpoints. Avast does slot delete checkpoints, you have to do it.

After checkpoints are gone you may remove the infected file. All this MEANS you must have another way of doing a restore of something further back in time.

But if there is a abetter way, I would like ton know.Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 12, 2013, 04:59:15 PM

Fact is the Infected file is something that would be recovered and used only if System Restore is activated and used. Random executables inside msi files saved by System Restore don't run themselves- they will pose no danger unless System Restore is used. These MSI files are also only activated and 'restored' for the Actual System Restore- they are basically the installer scripts and data for restoring an Application.

Which Brings to bear another point:

Since the infected file is inside an MSI, and since these MSI files are checkpointed data for reinstalling a Application that is installed at the time of the checkpoint, this means that an infected Application was installed. That infected Application will only "run" if that Restore point is restored. Otherwise, nothing happens. In the same scenario I wouldn't even bother to try to clean it. Eventually it will be deleted as new Checkpoints are created.

Solve : Need help from an experienced Commondore Vic 20 user!?

Answer»

I have recently GOTTEN my hands on a complete Commodore Vic 20, however I am having an issue with it. The rf modulator ( http://www.zimmers.net/cbmpics/cbm/vic/rf-adapt.jpg ) is supposed to connect via coxial so it runs on channel 3 or 4, currently, the only thing I own that is COMPATIBLE is my old nintendo converter ( http://www.thestrong.org/online-collections/images/Z005/Z00538/Z0053874.jpg ). Everything is plugged up properly because when I switch the system on the grey FUZZ on the tv screen changes and if I jiggle around the connection between the vic 20 box and the cable from the NES converter, the fuzz changes and sometimes remnants of a picture even appear. My question is, do you think this means the vic 20 box is bad? Could it be a loose connection? Should I open the box up and take a look inside? Or perhaps is it because the nintendo converter isn't properly designed for what I am trying to do here? Any help at all will be GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thanks!!!

Solve : Upgrades for EL1300G-01w ??????

So basically I'm stuck with this crap of a computer (for now) but I like to play FREE online games, like steam games.
So far the computer did pretty good but the games are GETTING bigger and better and this computer can't handle to newer ones.

My problem is I have no idea what I can upgrade on this desktop other then the 2gigs to 4 gigs (which I have not DONE yet) and I know that's not enough.

Here are the Specs----->>>> http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/emachines-el1300g-01w/4507-3118_7-33667235.html

I have not upgraded or add anything to this computer all SOFTWARE is still default.

SO what are my options for upgrading on this computer

I wasn't sure where to post this question sense it has to do with everything in the computer. It would be a waste of money to put anything into that PC...Seconded. It's too old to be worth spending money on unfortunately.Yep, definitely...get a NEW one!

Solve : Setting up audio system?

Answer»

Hey there everyone, My name is Paul and i'm here cause i need some help/guidance on setting up my sound system. I guess I'll start with the obvious by telling you what sort of equipment I'm DEALING with. So here it is:

System Model - HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC
OS Name - MICROSOFT Windows 8.1
Version - 6.3.9600 Build 9600
Processor - AMD A8-4500M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics, 1900 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s)

SINCE im dealing with the audio system, heres the audio info:
Name - IDT High DEFINITION Audio CODEC Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\stwrt64.sys (6.10.6425.0, 529.50 KB (542,208 bytes), 2013-11-04 6:31 AM)

Name AMD High Definition Audio Device Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\atihdw86.sys (8.0.0.8807, 96.16 KB (98,472 bytes), 2012-07-18 12:59 AM)

Speakers (Hardware):
Mission Electronics
Model 70
MK II
(No. 163920)
Power - 75 W Impedance - 8 OHMS

AND
PolkAudio
RM6751
Serial #: AM6751311583

Subwoofer
PSB Speakers
SubSeries 1 Powered Subwoofer
120 V ~ 60 Hz 1.6A AC Fuse
T1.6AL 250V

Other Information:
Im using a Harman/Kardon hk385i UltraWideBand Linear Phase Stereo Receiver to connect my speakers. The reason for this is simply because I cannot connect speaker wires to my laptop, so Im connecting the speakers to the receiver, and then using a cable to convert the red and white cable into one that i can plug into a 3.5mm port.
The subwoofer only has 2 red/2 black wire connections meaning I can only hook 2 speakers to the woofer. Whereas the receiver can hold all 4, but no more. So either I can use the receiver with 4 speakers and no woofer, or use the woofer with only two speakers.
Is there any harm in combining the 2 left speakers with the 1 left woofer port, and the 2 right speakers with the 1 right woofer port and then connecting those to the stereo receiver? So essentially turning my two port woofer into a 4 port woofer by crossing the wires.
My main concern I guess is that its too much power and it might break something? Im not sure exactly.

I apologize if it doesnt make sense, if you need any more information or have any questions about what im asking, ill be here to reply asap.
P.S. If you have any other solutions to my problem (aside from buying a new sound system specifically for computers) would be nice as well.

Thank you,
Again I apologize, my mind is all over the place! I've changed the subject of your post from "HELLO, is anyone here" to something more relevant. Also, keep in mind this is a computer help site and not an audio / video forum. While some of our members may be able to offer advice and assistance, this certainly shouldn't be your only online help request and take the place of the forums at AVS.com, for example.

Solve : configuring new system with Windows and Linux?

Answer»

Hi everyone. I have assembled a new tower system and have not yet installed any OS. I intend to RUN Windows 7 on it; I will be installing it from a retail disc for Win 7 that is currently installed on an old Pentium 4 and I'll be terminating that old computer since the motherboard has some degrading capacitors. I would also like to have a Linux OS on it. I prefer having two OS by installing one of the OS as a virtual machine using VMware Player or virtualbox, as opposed to a dual-boot configuration. This new build has 8GB of RAM, so it should have no problem running a primary OS and virtual OS simultaneously.

The question I'm debating now is which OS to install as the primary, i.e. the OS that initially boots when the computer is turned on, and which OS to run as virtual machine (VM). I belong to a computer users group and two of the members who lead a Linux SIG (Special Interest Group) within the organization have helped some other members setup new computer builds with two OS where one of them is a VM. These two guys prefer installing the Linux OS (usually Ubuntu, I believe) as the primary and Windows as a VM. I understand their REASONING but they are, in my opinion, Linux fanatics.

Interested in forum member opinions on this. Which way would you go, and why?
Couple of choices...
The cleanest method is dual-boot on seperate HDD's
If this is an option i'd highly suggest it.
If not and it's all on 1 HDD i'd suggest the Win install 1st...then whatever flavor of Linux you decide on...and then probably a 3rd party boot manager as grub and the others suck...It all comes down to how you use it. If you plan on using Linux mostly and just running a few Windows programs, put Windows in the VM, if it's the other way around, put Linux in the VM. You also need to think which OS will be running the most intensive tasks and consider putting that on the main machine.

Personally however, I dual boot my desktop off of a pair of SSDs (One for Linux (main) and other for Windows 8.1 (secondary)) and my laptop off a single SSD (Linux (main) and Windows 8.1 (secondary)). I don't have a problem with GRUB though - Sure it's not the easiest to configure manually but once it's up and running it works fine, besides, loads of distros will configure GRUB AUTOMATICALLY at install.Quote from: camerongray on November 19, 2013, 06:47:50 AM

Yeah, after giving this more thought, I think installing Windows as the primary system makes the most sense for me. I use MICROSOFT Office a lot.

I have one SSD in this new build and I plan to move the 250GB SATA HD from my old Win 7 system to this new build. So, it will have two drives and I might go the dual-boot route. On the other hand, I'd like to have the option to simply switch back and forth between Windows and Linux without restarting. So, installing a Linux OS as a VM is more likely what I'll do. I was doing this back in 2011 but it was a bit sluggish at times on the old system (P4 with 4GB of RAM). I think this new system will handle such a configuration much better. I could see the restart option being a pain...it's just how i run my dual-boot systems as i never have issues with boot-loader messes ...or VM slowdowns...just my opinion. For the usage you describe I would probably agree with using Windows as primary and Linux in a VM, if you go that route rather than separate drives.
As camerongray rightly says, it's all down to what you use the most. I would have Windows as primary and Linux as a VM myself mainly because, as far as I know, the only thing I couldn't do on Linux that I currently do with Windows is play GAMES (by which I mean games that don't work on Linux), and they'd be much better off not running in a VM.
I don't think you'll have a problem running a VM OS on top of your normal apps, you have enough RAM to make both smooth and SSDs help greatly in these situations as it's easy to run into a situation with a HDD where both OSes are accessing the disk and just thrashing it, bringing the system to a crawl.
