Solve : YouTube different on IE7 compared to Mozilla? |
Answer» I think the "F" means face book and every time I download a VIDEO from you Tube using Mozilla the video loads and I get the "F" I put the cursor on it and the "F" changes to play the video. On IE7 this anomaly doesn't happen. So, it has something to do with Mozilla. This could be way sometimes my videos on youtube mozilla flicker. Actually, what you're seeing is a Flash symbol:was just about to say that.... Its odd that your cursor changes to that THOUGH... are you using any special flash modifications? Or a flash downloading program? Do I need BOOTH of them? All I have to say is that one of them is probably causing my youtube video to flick and causing the picture to stretch like say there is a guy and his legs are stretched way down and if I pause the video it looks normal. But I have to say not the majority of videos just some and others look FINE. [attachment deleted by admin]First one is for IE, the second one for FF. Adobe Reader is for opening .pdf files.Quote from: thefonz on January 27, 2009, 06:32:34 PM I think the "F" means face book and every time I download a video from you Tube using Mozilla the video loads and I get the "F" I put the cursor on it and the "F" changes to play the video. On IE7 this anomaly doesn't happen. So, it has something to do with Mozilla. This could be way sometimes my videos on youtube mozilla flicker. So let me get this right, are you saying that when you load a youtube page in Firefox that it is showing that "f" and then you have to click on it in order to start the video? If so, look in your Firefox add-ons, there might be an add-on that says Flash Blocker or something along the lines of that. What it does, is that it blocks any flash on the page and will not show you whats underneath until you click the "F". The purpose of this add-on was to allow people to have faster loading times, because it wouldn't actually load that specific content until you click the "f". |

Solve : Using a tv as a monitor (help)? |

Answer» The screen like the text is a little blurry has anybody else has this problem? and what can i do ? You can try to increase the DPI of your computer, which essentially makes text bigger. Right click your desktop> Properties> Settings> Advanced button> General Tab OMG ZYLSTRA YOU ARE AMAZING!!! I was too having the same issue but I went ahead and changed the DPI to 120 and now I can see the desktop much better at a bigger resolution size. I hate using the STANDARD 800x600 (or WHATEVER it is, lol), but before I tried changing the DPI I had to, now that I've changed the DPI I can now use the 1024x768, THANK YOU SO MUCH! |

Solve : Encryption? |
Answer» Just a pretty basic question. I don't encrypt anything. Neither do I, I don't think i'm James Bond so WHATS the pointI don't see the point encrypting a hard drive, but I understand why people may want to encrypt files or folders.I encrypt the entire hard drive on both my laptop and desktop machines using Truecrypt. [both system partitions and data partitions] It serves to keep my financial information secure so I wouldn’t feel as though my wallet had been stolen if I lost my laptop. It requires a single password to boot or to come out of hibernation. I’m not even aware of the encryption in normal use. It doesn’t slow down the computer at all. It’s actually simpler to encrypt the whole thing than to worry about what is or isn’t secured. And this way even sensitive information that might end up in temp or hibernation or paging files is safe. The only trouble is if the OS needs repair by booting from the CD. Then you have to decrypt the drive to fix the OS. It TAKES several hours to run decrypt using the Truecrypt Rescue Disk. [You did make your rescue disk, didn’t you?] We get alot of people here who use encryption and then lose their keys........... Quote from: patio on January 27, 2009, 06:38:19 PM We get alot of people here who use encryption and then lose their keys...........Some are key based, but, I think you will find a lot of the free programs have the option of using a secure password, such as TrueCrypt (www.truecrypt.org) |

Solve : We won!!! - Music industry drops effort to sue song swappers? |
Answer» Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 04, 2009, 11:53:12 AM My opinion is that they should be going after the distribution points rather then the people using those distribution points. there are far fewer places to download illegal content then there are people downloading the content. The only problem with that is that they have servers hosted in other countries and the AUTHORITIES often can't do anything about it.Yeah, its not like there going to try to pin, oh say, Russia, or North Korea to pirating. They can't, they can't really do anything. Quote from: Dead_Reckon on January 04, 2009, 07:27:10 PM Yeah, its not like there going to try to pin, oh say, Russia, or North Korea to pirating. They can't, they can't really do anything. Which is why this isn't a win. They can HOWEVER go after our ISP's and put restrictions on everyone. No matter if you are the one targeted or not. It will only get worse from here. The RIAA has been at their agenda for years and not gone away. They just keep pushing until they find a legal avenue that's open to them.Nothing personal, NOT to take sides, but from the objective point of view, it'll never happen. For one reason. It's a classic example of "weapon and anti-weapon" game, which has been played since we lived in caves, and never won by either side.Don't forget the RIAA has been around since 1952 with the same goal all along. Quote http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA I'm not saying they will get everything they want, and hopefully they won't, but they will eventually find a medium that makes them happy...for now. Then they will be off on another mission. Remember, this is a group of lawyers who not only love their job but likely have a hefty bonus waiting for everything positive they do. There is a lot of incentive for them to win and it likely isn't about protecting ANYONES rights but more about not loosing their fight. Very well said. I still believe in my previous reply, though. There about as APT to do more than bother me than the anti-gun activists are to take away the semi-automatic Bulgarian SSR AK-47 my friend is getting me soon. As in, through a HAIL of 7.62x39mm FMJ, and over my dead body.what do you need a AK-47 for? shooting squirrels? EDIT: oh wait, that's what bazookas are for. Nah, just for shootin', get bored, goto the range. I'mma get a place in Roanoke County in a few years. When I do, appliances better not fail if they want a quick death. Oh, that friend of mine also plans to get a me a East German 9x18mm Makarov PM handgun when I turn 21 in two years. Oh, the AK is good here in the city for scaring off sales men, doesn't have to be loaded. Point it at 'em, they'll run, fast.Quote from: Dead_Reckon on January 05, 2009, 10:05:18 PM

Solve : what is the safest online connection? Cable line or dial-up?? |
Answer» Hello. I recently started doing online banking and I'm worried about security. I have a cable high-speed but also have another computer with dial-up. I was told once that the dial-up is safer because it's going through a phone line so I'm reluctant to get rid of it and start using the high-speed. Which is the safest method of connection to avoid hackers? the safest internet connection is SSL. When you're doing your online banking make sure that there is an https in front of the web address instead of just an http, and you'll be fine. You can also check the certificates on secure web pages to make sure they're safe.Good point. Internet users should know how to recognize when their web browser is in secure mode, i.e. using SSL. All financial transactions on the Web, whether banking, credit CARDS, investments (stocks, mutual funds, etc.), and all online buying activity should only be done with SSL enabled-websites, as indicated by https vs. http, and the lock icon in the lower right corner of the browser being in locked mode. The safest is unplugged unfortunately...any type of connection can be hacked. However if you practice safe surfing and common sense along with a decent software firewall and a router you have nothing to worry about.I stand corrected. What I meant was that dialup vs broadband is sort of irrevelent, since either can be hacked fairly easily and are both relatively insecure. However, when using a website using SSL, you don't have to worry about the data being read, diverted or tracked. (assuming there is no spyware on the computer itself) I would even feel comfortable doing online banking via SSL on a public network as long as I'm using my own laptop and don't have to install any software to use the network.Quote what is the safest online connection? Cable line or dial-up?No right answer. The QUESTION has a wrong presumption. Internet security has never been an issue of how you get into your local server. That is like asking is it safer to walk alone in a dark hostile war zone using tennis shoes or regular boots. I am using CA Internet Security Suite because it is free with my ISP. I'm just concerned because I keep hearing about identity theft and "war driving" by hackers who may be able to break into my wireless home network. I am using a Linksys network adaptor with WEP encryption which I know is no good, but I don't know what else to use. Regarding: "However if you practice safe surfing and common sense along with a decent software firewall and a router you have nothing to worry about." I try to practice safe surfing and common sense, do have a firewall and router, but if the above is true, then why are all these folks getting hacked and suffering from identity theft and all the associated troubles? I know there are other ways to get your identity stolen, but I would love to know how common it is for a wireless network to get broken into and had bank numbers stolen, etc. Thanks, VonHave you tried setting up WPA security for your wireless connection? How do I do that? Is it difficult? Quote "However if you practice safe surfing and common sense along with a decent software firewall and a router you have nothing to worry about."That is wrong! Some Greek philosopher once said: "All general statements are false, including this one." Quote from: Vonique on January 09, 2009, 05:50:49 PM How do I do that? Is it difficult? You have a wireless router, right? What model is it?Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 09, 2009, 06:23:27 PM QuoteElaborate, please. If you think it's wrong, state why."However if you practice safe surfing and common sense along with a decent software firewall and a router you have nothing to worry about."That is wrong! |

Solve : The point of the registry? |
Answer» I'm just wondering, what exactly is the point of the registry? I mean, really? What goes into it that couldn't just be put in a more accessible text file? SP2? No problem! Bring out a second ROM chip and get people to switch the chips over in their local shop. People have enough trouble clicking a button that says 'update' on it. You think they're going to GO out of their house? and pay for someone to fiddle with what is presumably a very important peice of equipment. FBQuote from: m_260 on January 27, 2009, 03:28:38 PM how do MacOSX handle programs and files? Mac Operating systems have no registry after all. Does it mean it's more user friendly in that part? No Registry to damage....Sometimes, series of Mac programs, or programs by one company will have a shared information file. Macs have a really weird extension setup though... which, kind of represents the cons of the registry, except extensions are held in folders. |

Solve : History of Data Storage? |
Answer» I FOUND this and thought it would be a good share. In the late 1990S you could get ahold of 3 inch DISKS that could store 250 MB of data. that wasn't a Floppy disk, it was a LS-240, and it only held 240MB, not 250, AND you needed a LS-240 drive to read them. it was an interesting read nonetheless- thanks for the link, Carbon No mention of the Abacus long used in China. Or is it considered too volatile? Shake it and lose the data. And it did not do floating point, you had to use long integers.Just look at that hard drive. Wow. Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 12, 2009, 10:25:06 PM No mention of the Abacus long used in China.Haha, nice. And where is the mention of people's Noggan's? I guess it was considered unreliable. I ran a couple Registry Scans that I found on line and they come up with over 1000 errors or problems. Should I run a registry scan? If so, what registry scan should I run, anyone have any favorites? Thanks....wait for an EXPERT to come on I ran a couple Registry Scans that I found on line and they come up with over 1000 errors or problems. What registry scanners are those that you used? What did you do when you saw the list of errors? Did you have the scanner delete them or close the scanner without "FIXING" the errors? I'm going to suggest using a certain registry cleaner in the next paragraph, but note that, if you have already damaged your registry due to using other registry cleaners, those problems can not be fixed by using some other registry cleaner. You need to be very cautious about using registry cleaners. Here, in the forum, we generally recommend avoiding the use of cleaners due to the risks involved. However, I would recommend one known to be safe and one often recommended in computing forums. It's CCleaner, I would definitely use it in your situation. Go here and get the Slim version; it's free, no donation required. CCleaner is both a disk/file cleanup utitlity and a registry cleaner. Run a Windows scan and tell CCleaner to remove all ITEMS found. Before running the scan, look at the scan options in the long list shown on that screen. I believe, by default, the items under Advanced are not selected. If they are, I suggest you uncheck them for now. After the Windows scan, run a Registry scan (select the Registry button on left side of main screen). When you run the scanner, it will prompt you to backup your registry from that screen. Do so, and then proceed with the scan and fixing all items found. Repeat the registry scan; additional items may be found upon repeat scan. |

Solve : I need help, how accurate is microsoft word created date on a document?? |
Answer» I am in a battle with our association. I own a condo in FLORIDA and shortly after buying it the board CHANGED the rental rule. They did so without 2 WEEK notice to owners so we were unable to speak. The board president is what we call a dictator(his way or take highway). We had a hearing and he and one other person stated that they gave the 2 week notice sent out and posted on Sept 6. I was able to examine the computer records and microsoft word shows the created date as being Sept 16. How reliable is this? |

Solve : Proposed Gaming Computer, any good?? |
Answer» Quote from: Shandy on January 16, 2009, 02:13:21 PM Why have two DVD writable drives? You will need one high-speed DVD drive for installing software from DVDs during an installation from a disc the speed is usually LIMITED by the speed at which the disc can be read by the drive. High speed drives are cheaper if they can't also write data to discsI dont see that either. I can see a dvd rom and a BURNER. one for slave and the other a master. That is what I set up at one time. but I came to see I didn't need it.id NORMALLY go a one GIG graphics CARD it makes a big difference. however that card your looking at buying is blisteringly fast so me id go with the original plan. |

Solve : Do I need to update Quick Time....? |
Answer» Well guys, I had him upload the VIDS from his camera again to his computer and resend then without changing anything, still no numbers. The only thing that shows under the video clip when he sent them with only the numbers in which the videos were taken on his camera. There are three vids and the numbers come over as, 100_0200.MOV, 100_0201.MOV, and 100_0202.MOV. These are the only numbers that show up under the videos. Is he uploading them right? He's doing this by taking out his memory card, putting it in a card reader, then taking these vids off the card reader to the computer. Should he upload these vids off his camera USING a USB cord from the camera to the computer, would that make a diffrence? Should I have him try sending them over as an attachment in an email? We are sending them through Yahoo messenger, he has 8.0 and I have 9.0, does that have anything to do with it? |

Solve : Speaker setup? |
Answer» I've got a stereo system with good quality speakers which has 1 RCA input (red/white HOLES) which is connected to my computer with a wire on which one END is a 3.5 mm jack and on the other is RCA. My TV has crappier speakers, and I'd like to have both the TV and the computer connected to the stereo system. The TV has both a 3.5 mm output and an RCA output. Is there some sort of switch box or something I could get to connect both to the stereo? I'm willing to GO DIY with this if it's too expensive. (light switches?) |

Solve : Is 'CD Earth' legitimate?? |
Answer» Several months ago I bought Ubuntu from CD Earth and put it on my credit card. In a few days it arrived and all was well. "Thanks, You went above and beyond even without the free CD's. I will definitely remember you for any future software needs." Though i couldn't find Ubuntu on CDearth to check it out. It also seems to have a legitimate Verisign and Mcafee security label. you MIGHT want to check this out: http://www.cdearth.com/terms_conditions.htm It says the extra CD's were a free trial and had to be returned within 25days, it is all written in their terms and conditions but they are being quite sneaky about it. FBPleas do us a favor. REPORT this to you local DA. And call your credit card company and have a talk with them. This kind of stuff is going on all over. Please read this: http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/333/RipOff0333661.htm Go to every consumer forum you know of an let everybody know. Nobody will do anything unless enough people yell long enough and loud enough. Ubuntu is Free... They will ship you up to 10 copies from there website. Thanks for your comments. It's probably no secret that I'm a 'senior citizen.' So it's my job to fall for every scam out there; anyway... Ubuntu has now cost me 5$ plus the $59.96 they charged me for the other discs. I did file a report with the Scam Report as the previous post suggested. I talked with my credit card company, Mastercard and they will protest the charges. I doubt that will result in any return of the charges, I did google cdearth and found several people complaining that they had received the same treatment. Anymore suggestions appreciated.http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/cdearth.com ...Has quite a bit of a BAD report... Copas: If you use FireFox, check out WOT for helping determine if a site is safe: http://www.mywot.com/ If you use Internet Explorer, check out McAfee Site Adviser: http://www.siteadvisor.com/ WOT is FF and IE compatible And as usual SA has it WRONG! http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/cdearth.comQuote from: evilfantasy on January 18, 2009, 09:38:34 PM WOT is FF and IE compatibleAHha, they dont go off user INPUT nearly as much as they should. At least they have comments. I couldent find a IE version of WOT, where is it? http://www.mywot.com/en/download/ff The IE install option is beneath the download button.Quote It's probably no secret that I'm a 'senior citizen.' So it's my job to fall for every scam out there; anyway... Me too. And I keep getting e-mails for companies the I canceled. They just keep sending bills to me because I changed my Credit Card number and they can no longer bill me automatically. Anti-Virus and similar tools are very important. But they can not protect you form everything. Fraud can come in many forms.By the way SSL is good, but not as secure as it should be. Your browser can be tricked. This has been documented. You need that latest version of FireFox to be sure. I have a PayPal account, and I use it, but I refuse to give them more information than what they need. They are NOT a responsible institution that will protect you from any fraud. You have to put a limit on what you do with your PayPal account. Yet PayPal is one of the better firms! The only companies that will offer you protection, as far as I knew, are the credit card companies. And even then you have to be on top of it and look at all your charges every month. Avoid ever doing any business with a stranger using your bank account. Do not deposit checks from people you do not know! Do NOT give then your account number, you social security number, your birthday or anything other than maybe your shipping address. Don't even tell a stranger the name of your dog! Thanks for your comments. What I experienced wasn't illegal just deceptive. I think I am pretty aware but I got caught. Fortunately it was for a small amount. I suppose it would be the same if it had been my house. I would be setting out in the street... Anyway, Your comments made me feel better. I'll try to stay alert and spread the word. Hang in there, Ivan Copas This is for: The Geek After Dark. (There is no little reply box at the end of your last post.) I received an email from CDEarth saying they were going to refund the money they charged me for the discs. I'm giving you credit for moving them. Perhaps they 'got religion' as we say here in Southern Ohio. Or perhaps you contacted the Obama team. Anyway; Thanks a bunch. Ivan Copas |

Solve : What is the Best A+ Book Out there?? |
Answer» I didn't know what forum to put this in but here is goes. I want to really want learn about computers and one day take the A+ exam. I'd figure I'd start out with a book because I hate studying from websites or ebooks. Also, I know I can get a better deal if I buy the book online or at half.com so your advice is needed.I used this one I used this one Thats a great book. I have that one.Two People voted for the same book so I guess I'm getting that one to start with. I got a Barnes and Nobel gift card for Christmas so I guess I'm getting it from them evn though they charge more. I searched Comptia's website and didn't find any info about a new test, but I guess you have to learn the old stuff first anyways. Once toyed with the idea of writing the A+. Had a change of mind as I so often do. Check out www.proprofs.com...great site ..lots of exam questions. Sybex Publication : A+ Complete Study Guide by Docter,Dulaney & Skandier is a well written book . It's just a matter of personal taste on how the instruction FLOWS. There are lots of others. ..Peace. Update-I bought A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, Sixth Edition (Hardcover) book. The book is huge, in part because of its large print. I think it is great and I'm finding that I know a lot more than I thought. |
