Paul Smith, the man with extraordinary talent was born in Philadelphia on September 21, 1921, with severe cerebral palsy.

Not only had Paul beaten the odds of a life with spastic cerebral palsy, a disability that impeded his SPEECH & mobility but also taught himself to BECOME a master artist as well as a terrific chess player even after being devoid of a formal education as a child.

When typing, Paul used his left hand to steady his right one. Since he couldn't press two keys at the same time, he almost always locked the shift key down and made his pictures using the symbols at the TOP of the number keys. In other words, his pictures were based on these characters ..... @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _.

Across SEVEN decades, Paul created hundreds of pictures. He often gave the originals away. Sometimes, but not always, he kept or received a copy for his own records.

As his mastery of the typewriter grew, he developed techniques to create shadings, colors, and textures that made his work resemble pencil or charcoal drawings.

He passed away on June 25, 2007, but left behind a collection of his amazing artwork that will be an inspiration for many.Truly amazing! Thanx for sharing...

Solve : Faulty Seagate Hard Drive?

Answer»

I bought a 500 gig drive from New Egg. They advertised it to be guaranteed for 3 years. It failed within thirty days.

New Egg told me to contact Seagate directly. When I called them for a return authorization number I got a recorded MESSAGED saying they had no staff and warranty service was handled on line.

I admire their web page. It is a MODEL of COMPLEX jargon with loop backs and other roadblocks OBVIOUSLY designed to put off anyone wanting to return a product.

Let the buyer beware.Interesting...
I just contacted them last week on an issue and spoke to a live person who was extremely helpful...
Which contact # did you use ? ?I called the number New Egg gave me. 800 732 4283

New Egg was very helpful. They faxed me a copy of the order

When I went on line and tried to get a return authorization it keeps telling me the unit is not under warranty.

I'm reluctant to protest the charges with my card company for I don't think New Egg should pay. That's who it's billed too, not Seagate.,

Thanks for your responce.Same # i used...
The Warranty/RMA page looks pretty basic to me...use the e-mail route and fill in your serial # and other data:

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/about/contact_usI jumped to the wrong conclusion. I take back all the bad things I was thinking about Seagate.

I called New Egg again and the girl helped me with the page. I was mistaking a Q for an O. She saw my problem right away.

I am ready to send off the drive if the ice ever thaws off my driveway.

Thanks for putting up with me.No problem at all....glad you are on your way to a resolution.

Did they suggest this may be it ? ?That's interesting. I'm pretty sure it's faulty. I tried several things to revive it.

If I return it and they decide it's OK I think they'll return it. I'll have to pay for shipping.

Any ideas as to how I can be certain?

I haven't sent it out yet as I have been iced in the pat two days.

Thanks so much for your comments.I would just go for the replacement...

Solve : Monitor Gibberish?

Answer»

My monitor is showing colored dollar signs when I turn it on...but they GO away as the computer LOADS but then I have green/red/yellow rectangle bars across the SCREEN. Can SOMEONE help me with this? Thanks so much.Sounds like a damaged monitor?

Is this a Desktop computer or a Laptop?

When did this happen?

When you turn on the computer, is the first thing you see that 'gibberish'sounds more like a graphics card problem to me. my old Rage Pro does it every few boot-ups- I always thought my K6-2's mobo was going, but I replaced the video card and the problem dissapeared.

it could also be a incompatible setting in the BIOS- AGP speed, aperture size, etc.Remove the vid card and clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol or a pencil eraser...
Use a can of compressed air to blow out the slot.
Re-assemble and re-boot.
If it still does it then the card is failing as BC alluded to...

Solve : YouTube different on IE7 compared to Mozilla?

Answer»

I think the "F" means face book and every time I download a VIDEO from you Tube using Mozilla the video loads and I get the "F" I put the cursor on it and the "F" changes to play the video. On IE7 this anomaly doesn't happen. So, it has something to do with Mozilla. This could be way sometimes my videos on youtube mozilla flicker.

There is no way to contact YouTube to ask about this so I thought I would ask you if you know how to disable this.

Actually, what you're seeing is a Flash symbol:

was just about to say that....

Its odd that your cursor changes to that THOUGH... are you using any special flash modifications? Or a flash downloading program? Do I need BOOTH of them? All I have to say is that one of them is probably causing my youtube video to flick and causing the picture to stretch like say there is a guy and his legs are stretched way down and if I pause the video it looks normal. But I have to say not the majority of videos just some and others look FINE.

So let me get this right, are you saying that when you load a youtube page in Firefox that it is showing that "f" and then you have to click on it in order to start the video? If so, look in your Firefox add-ons, there might be an add-on that says Flash Blocker or something along the lines of that. What it does, is that it blocks any flash on the page and will not show you whats underneath until you click the "F". The purpose of this add-on was to allow people to have faster loading times, because it wouldn't actually load that specific content until you click the "f".

Solve : I need help!!?

I have a profile on a networking site, which have banned me for merely wanting to delete my profile. They have now reactivated my profile and have made all my photos public. They are also messaging other users from my profile. I have contacted the site owners/administrators and been told they WONT remove the profile and have sent me abusive emails in return. Websites are communism.
When you registered, you probably signed a magical agreement that said that the administrator has complete control over your account. They can choose to ban you even if you didnt break the rules. They can do whatever they want to.
Its their website.

What I can say:
If they choose to take actions with no real thought behind them (heck, I banned all of Korea from my forum DUE to the high amount of SPAM I get from there...) all I can say is:
More power to them, and if you dont like it, stop visiting their website, and dont recommend it to anyone else.

Usually, webmasters email will be:

[emailprotected]
(Replace "site" with the web address)

By Uploading Files Expecially photos to anything "facebook/myspace" it becomes "Facebook/myspace 's " Legal property and they can do whatever they want to it
always read the t.o.s, and legal disclaimers that you agree too during signup.

http://wareseeker.com/free-reallusion-crazytalk-3.5/

At one time (can't find now) the download says that sometimes the firewall could be interfering with the download and that I should turn it off. Isn't that dangerous and opening my computer up for harm. I have XP:

HP 9750

Solve : Using a tv as a monitor (help)?

Answer»

The screen like the text is a little blurry has anybody else has this problem? and what can i do ?

22" HD LCD TV From Element..

• Aspect ratio: 16:10
• Resolution: 1680 x 1050
• Brightness: 400 cd/m2
• Contrast ratio: 700:1
• Response time: 5 ms
VIEWING angle: 160 x 170

Just putting information that will be needed.

Computer I will be using for this:
XPS 420
Intel Core2 Duo PROCESSOR (3.0GHz)
3GB RAM
-512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT-Make sure resolution is native resolution for display. Also you should have an adjustment for sync phase which might help. But usually sync phase will cause a ghost like column that will case text to be blurry in column areas and not entire display. Also TV's traditionally have worse dpi than computer displays causing blur, but newer HD LCD displays have to be better than the old CRT's. Not sure if HD is equal to or better than PC display. You can try to increase the DPI of your computer, which essentially makes text bigger. Right click your desktop> Properties> Settings> Advanced button> General Tab

Change to 120DPI
Is that better?Quote from: Zylstra on JANUARY 14, 2008, 10:39:08 AM

OMG ZYLSTRA YOU ARE AMAZING!!! I was too having the same issue but I went ahead and changed the DPI to 120 and now I can see the desktop much better at a bigger resolution size.

I hate using the STANDARD 800x600 (or WHATEVER it is, lol), but before I tried changing the DPI I had to, now that I've changed the DPI I can now use the 1024x768, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Solve : Encryption?

Answer»

Just a pretty basic question.

Do you practice file encryption?

If so, discuss what programs, algorithms, hashes, and encryption practices you use.

Personally, I just encrypted my Windows System partition using TRUE Crypt (an open source program) along with a couple of Virtual Encrypted Drives (also done by using True Crypt). Just using basic AES with an 18 character password.I voted: "No, what's file encryption?" on accident.

Right now, mine isnt encrypted, since I have Ubuntu installed, and I DONT want to have to deal with that right now... but, it soon will be once I get Windows 7 installed... need to get an external hard drive enclosure to fit my 60GB 2.5" drive.I don't encrypt anything.QUOTE from: Calum on January 26, 2009, 02:24:04 AM

I don't encrypt anything.

Neither do I, I don't think i'm James Bond so WHATS the pointI don't see the point encrypting a hard drive, but I understand why people may want to encrypt files or folders.I encrypt the entire hard drive on both my laptop and desktop machines using Truecrypt. [both system partitions and data partitions] It serves to keep my financial information secure so I wouldn’t feel as though my wallet had been stolen if I lost my laptop.

It requires a single password to boot or to come out of hibernation. I’m not even aware of the encryption in normal use. It doesn’t slow down the computer at all.

It’s actually simpler to encrypt the whole thing than to worry about what is or isn’t secured. And this way even sensitive information that might end up in temp or hibernation or paging files is safe.

The only trouble is if the OS needs repair by booting from the CD. Then you have to decrypt the drive to fix the OS. It TAKES several hours to run decrypt using the Truecrypt Rescue Disk. [You did make your rescue disk, didn’t you?]
We get alot of people here who use encryption and then lose their keys........... Quote from: patio on January 27, 2009, 06:38:19 PM
We get alot of people here who use encryption and then lose their keys...........
Some are key based, but, I think you will find a lot of the free programs have the option of using a secure password, such as TrueCrypt (www.truecrypt.org)

Solve : We won!!! - Music industry drops effort to sue song swappers?

Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 04, 2009, 11:53:12 AM

My opinion is that they should be going after the distribution points rather then the people using those distribution points. there are far fewer places to download illegal content then there are people downloading the content.

The only problem with that is that they have servers hosted in other countries and the AUTHORITIES often can't do anything about it.Yeah, its not like there going to try to pin, oh say, Russia, or North Korea to pirating. They can't, they can't really do anything. Quote from: Dead_Reckon on January 04, 2009, 07:27:10 PM
Yeah, its not like there going to try to pin, oh say, Russia, or North Korea to pirating. They can't, they can't really do anything.

Which is why this isn't a win. They can HOWEVER go after our ISP's and put restrictions on everyone. No matter if you are the one targeted or not.

It will only get worse from here. The RIAA has been at their agenda for years and not gone away. They just keep pushing until they find a legal avenue that's open to them.Nothing personal, NOT to take sides, but from the objective point of view, it'll never happen.
For one reason.
It's a classic example of "weapon and anti-weapon" game, which has been played since we lived in caves, and never won by either side.Don't forget the RIAA has been around since 1952 with the same goal all along.

Quote
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIAA

The RIAA's goals[1] are:

1. to protect intellectual property rights worldwide and the First Amendment rights of artists;
2. to perform research about the music industry;
3. to monitor and review relevant laws, regulations and policies.

I'm not saying they will get everything they want, and hopefully they won't, but they will eventually find a medium that makes them happy...for now. Then they will be off on another mission. Remember, this is a group of lawyers who not only love their job but likely have a hefty bonus waiting for everything positive they do. There is a lot of incentive for them to win and it likely isn't about protecting ANYONES rights but more about not loosing their fight.
Very well said.
I still believe in my previous reply, though. There about as APT to do more than bother me than the anti-gun activists are to take away the semi-automatic Bulgarian SSR AK-47 my friend is getting me soon. As in, through a HAIL of 7.62x39mm FMJ, and over my dead body.what do you need a AK-47 for? shooting squirrels?

EDIT: oh wait, that's what bazookas are for. Nah, just for shootin', get bored, goto the range. I'mma get a place in Roanoke County in a few years. When I do, appliances better not fail if they want a quick death. Oh, that friend of mine also plans to get a me a East German 9x18mm Makarov PM handgun when I turn 21 in two years.

Oh, the AK is good here in the city for scaring off sales men, doesn't have to be loaded. Point it at 'em, they'll run, fast.Quote from: Dead_Reckon on January 05, 2009, 10:05:18 PM

Solve : disappearing cursor?

Answer»

this is my first post on this website. i have a compaq presario f572us notebook which operates w/windows vista. when my computer goes on standby (or at times randomly), the cursor disappears. i have to RESTART the computer to get the cursor back. this may (hopefully) be a very DUMB question w/ a very easy SOLUTION. anyone have any input??When did this start happening?

Any recent downloads/installs/hardware changes/ect....?

Any error messages?

Does this happen at the same time every time?It has happened since I bought the laptop last year. It mostly happens if the computer goes on standby and then I start using it again. Sometimes it just happens. It has been happening less since I set the display to "never" go off. TAKE a look at this.

I'm not sure the path for Windows Vista, but this is how to get it with Windows XP:
Start --> Control Panel --> Mouse --> Pointer Options.
Now there should be a check box for 'Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key'. Tick it.

When the cursor disappears again, see if it can be located. Its funny because it is true, also make sure that you have not downloaded any thing that could effect the cursor, say like a bad batch FILE, which edits the cursor setting or something like that.

Solve : Recommendation for CH?

Answer»

is there any way that the topic starter could mark a solved topic as solved?
it'd make it easier to see who needs help and who's problem is solved
just an idea This has been discussed many times in the PAST.

As I recall, we never got anywhere with it?I was just thinking that the other day, would be great

I rarely see the mod's doing it these days though anyway. It's been discussed several times in the past.
It's not very often done by staff because it's a lot of work for 11 people. Most of the posters, by statistics alone, won't be back or won't remember to mark their topics solved - if they do, it has to be double checked to make sure it is actually solved. Some topics also don't really have a POINT where you can say it's definitely solved or not. A forum modification could be installed to make this easier, but these can sometimes cause problems.
It's a good idea, but all the discussions in the past have come to the conclusion that it's not a workable idea. You also have the case where suggestions have seemingly resolved the issue and 2 weeks LATER the Topic is active again because the machine is even more wonked than it was originally...
Personally i don't see any advantage to it myself.
Chris tried this in the Virus and Malware section alone...ask him how much work it was...I remember now, the malware section was ONE place we tried it out.
By "we" I mean Chris, once when he'd just been made a moderator (before malware specialists, I BELIEVE) and again, later on, with the malware specialists helping.
By that, you can see that even with a team doing it in just one board, it wasn't workable.
patio's point is also valid - especially in the malware section, where some people tend to get infected over and over again.

Solve : what is the safest online connection? Cable line or dial-up??

Answer»

Hello. I recently started doing online banking and I'm worried about security. I have a cable high-speed but also have another computer with dial-up. I was told once that the dial-up is safer because it's going through a phone line so I'm reluctant to get rid of it and start using the high-speed. Which is the safest method of connection to avoid hackers?

Thanks, VonDial-up is considered safer simply because everytime you connect, the ISP gives you another IP address. So, imagining that a Hacker that wanted to break into your computer was like a stalker, it's a lot easier to find you when your staying in one place rather then moving to a new house every week

With proper security and Ant-Virus software, however, such things become a non-issue. What Anti-Virus software have you installed? Are you paying for two Internet services? When I was using Earthlink as my ISP, I could connect either VIA DSL or dialup to my Earthlink account. In such a case, you could use dialup for banking if you want, but I would not pay for a separate dialup service just for banking.

As BC_Programmer said, with proper security measures, you should not worry. That includes a firewall, of course, You should have at least SP2 if using Win XP, and keep your browser updated also. If you're using IE 6, i suggest you upgrade to IE7, or the latest version of Firefox. the safest internet connection is SSL. When you're doing your online banking make sure that there is an https in front of the web address instead of just an http, and you'll be fine. You can also check the certificates on secure web pages to make sure they're safe.
If a website is using SSL, that means all data is being encrypted, and third parties cannot view your data enroute.
Also, make sure you have your virus definitions up to date to make sure you have no malware installed on your computer that can track personal information entered on a website.SSL isn't a Connection Method, it's "Secure Sockets layer", and is implemented by web servers.

One would still need to have a Internet Connection provided by Dial-up, ISDN, Cable, or DSL etc.

EDIT: although it is important to note, since any REPUTABLE vendor will use SSL.Quote from: michaewlewis on January 09, 2009, 12:21:21 PM

Good point. Internet users should know how to recognize when their web browser is in secure mode, i.e. using SSL. All financial transactions on the Web, whether banking, credit CARDS, investments (stocks, mutual funds, etc.), and all online buying activity should only be done with SSL enabled-websites, as indicated by https vs. http, and the lock icon in the lower right corner of the browser being in locked mode. The safest is unplugged unfortunately...any type of connection can be hacked.
However if you practice safe surfing and common sense along with a decent software firewall and a router you have nothing to worry about.I stand corrected. What I meant was that dialup vs broadband is sort of irrevelent, since either can be hacked fairly easily and are both relatively insecure. However, when using a website using SSL, you don't have to worry about the data being read, diverted or tracked. (assuming there is no spyware on the computer itself)
I would even feel comfortable doing online banking via SSL on a public network as long as I'm using my own laptop and don't have to install any software to use the network.Quote
what is the safest online connection? Cable line or dial-up?
No right answer. The QUESTION has a wrong presumption.
Internet security has never been an issue of how you get into your local server.
That is like asking is it safer to walk alone in a dark hostile war zone using tennis shoes or regular boots.

I am using CA Internet Security Suite because it is free with my ISP. I'm just concerned because I keep hearing about identity theft and "war driving" by hackers who may be able to break into my wireless home network. I am using a Linksys network adaptor with WEP encryption which I know is no good, but I don't know what else to use.

Regarding:

"However if you practice safe surfing and common sense along with a decent software firewall and a router you have nothing to worry about."

I try to practice safe surfing and common sense, do have a firewall and router, but if the above is true, then why are all these folks getting hacked and suffering from identity theft and all the associated troubles? I know there are other ways to get your identity stolen, but I would love to know how common it is for a wireless network to get broken into and had bank numbers stolen, etc.

Thanks, VonHave you tried setting up WPA security for your wireless connection? How do I do that? Is it difficult?

Solve : Unresolved Issues/Forum Posts?

Answer»

Hi folks. I am relatively new, so I would ask that no one call me stupid or make me feel even more miserable than I already do.

I was wondering if anyone knows what STEPS that someone who posts a forum, yet still has an unresolved issue, should take. I tried to read in all the FAQs, Posting Rules, etc., but I did not come across the answer to this. I even tried "unanswered question", etc. in the SEARCH engine.

Specifically, I am referring to a forum (see below) I started several weeks back. It was basically a 2-part question (one major and one minor), and I did receive help with the minor one. But the post count now STANDS at 3 (one response to my post & my thanks to the responder) with no activity for maybe 3 weeks or more.

I have to believe with all the miraculous things I've read on these forums that someone has to know how to help me. Yet the goal of this question is not to get that issue dealt per se; it's to ask you who have more experience what to do when a situation LIKE this arises.

Thanks to all. The path to the specific forum to which I am referring is below:

Microsoft / Microsoft Windows / System Standby/Hibernate Not Available in Windows XP SP3

Newbie Having a Bad Day (actually decade)Replying to your own topic is usually frowned upon and sometimes considered 'spamming'. That will move the thread back onto the first page of the forum and get it more attention. Nobody is going to see it most likely once it gets to the second, third page.Welcome Aboard black069...
If you haven't had a reply in some time the easiest way is to simply add a reply in your own Topic. This bumps the Topic so it can be seen again.

Solve : The point of the registry?

Answer»

I'm just wondering, what exactly is the point of the registry? I mean, really? What goes into it that couldn't just be put in a more accessible text file?

Why do programs need a dozen keys in a special folder thingy, that don't appear to actually do anything? The registry exists to make your programs slower, more difficult to USE, more difficult to clean up, and to make Windows itself slower.

Really, I agree completely, programs can keep their own datafiles in their programs file folder.

The registry should only be used for these things:
Uninstaller references,
Storage of CD keys, if a company is that PARANOID about that kind of thing,
Windows settings.

Its my dream that programmers will understand this, and start using data files.

Programs make excessive keys due to bad programming... I agree with the uninstaller refrences. Although, its amazing how many uninstallers won't remove said refrences when they don't need them anymore....

So the other keys, which hold a negligible amount of data, they don't actually do anything? (Apart from CD keys and Windows settings (which if any MS programmer had an ounce of sense would be in a .ini folder in the WINDOWS directory))

I know there is a startup key thing, I've used it before when I've played around with the registry. It just seems there is so much pointless stuff in it.The startup items do hold their valid uses, however, so does the much easier to manage "Startup" folder in your Start menu.

how do MacOSX handle programs and files? Mac Operating systems have no registry after all. Does it mean it's more user friendly in that part? No Registry to damage....I think its time that OS's started coming out on ROM chips again. All viruses which attack the OS are instantly rendered redundant. I have a palmtop with MS-DOS 5.0 on a ROM chip inside it - it's brilliant.

You might claim that its because updates are required... but if you look at the updates, it seems to me anyway that about 90% are them are for security.

SP2? No problem! Bring out a second ROM chip and get people to switch the chips over in their local shop.Quote from: Bones92 on January 27, 2009, 04:34:21 PM

People have enough trouble clicking a button that says 'update' on it. You think they're going to GO out of their house? and pay for someone to fiddle with what is presumably a very important peice of equipment.

Sometimes, series of Mac programs, or programs by one company will have a shared information file.

Macs have a really weird extension setup though... which, kind of represents the cons of the registry, except extensions are held in folders.

Solve : RE: Dual View problem?

Answer»

I have a laptop with a graphics card that SUPPORTS dual view. Normally at home, I plug in ANOTHER monitor so I have two screens running at the same time running dual view. On the other monitor I have an application running.

My problem is that when I'm away from the desk and I don't have the other monitor, I run the application but I cannot see the application because it is set for the other monitor. I can't move it to the other screen because I can't see, maybe guess but it takes some time

I set everything for single view (my primary view) but that doesn't help.

The only way I can do this now is to move and close out the application before I shut down the computer.

Anyone have any suggestions?I also use dual view, extended desktop. In my CASE it is not a laptop. But sometimes I have to use the monitor for something else, so I move applications off the far side.I have software drivers that let me change the priority on the fly, preventing any application from starting in the extended are.
Check your documentation to see if there is an option to stop applications from starting on the second monitor. There should be some kind of shortcut or task bar thing that forces everything off the second monitor.yeah nView gave options for this.

Just make sure you disable the secondary before you leave and it should work fine, or disable it fter it isnt plugged in, they should just 'pop' over into the view area.I work with two or three monitors for my work and sometimes when I disable the third display I get the same thing. I usually just activate the window that showed up on the GHOST monitor and HIT "alt-space + M", hit an arrow key and then use my mouse to drag the windows to where I can see it.

my old dell inspiron is ,out of date. I would like to purchase a new laptop but do not know what would be the most reliable.any suggestions would be appreciated.Well, there are many models on the market and the price range in wide. Can you give us a general idea of how much you would like to pay for it? Also, do you have a specific requirements, such as a laptop capable of playing the more demanding online, multi-player games?

If you needs are basically email, web-surfing, word processing, etc., you can get very adequate laptops for a very reasonable price, a low as $600 or less. Nearly all models, even at lower end of the price spectrum, now have at least 2GB of RAM, which is quite adequate for the type of usage just stated.

If you haven't used Windows Vista yet, get ready because that's what you'll be getting. The Home Premium version is offered on many laptops and PC's on the market and is a good choice for many users.Few days ago, I got this one:

I ran a couple Registry Scans that I found on line and they come up with over 1000 errors or problems.
What registry scanners are those that you used? What did you do when you saw the list of errors? Did you have the scanner delete them or close the scanner without "FIXING" the errors?

I'm going to suggest using a certain registry cleaner in the next paragraph, but note that, if you have already damaged your registry due to using other registry cleaners, those problems can not be fixed by using some other registry cleaner.

You need to be very cautious about using registry cleaners. Here, in the forum, we generally recommend avoiding the use of cleaners due to the risks involved. However, I would recommend one known to be safe and one often recommended in computing forums. It's CCleaner, I would definitely use it in your situation. Go here and get the Slim version; it's free, no donation required. CCleaner is both a disk/file cleanup utitlity and a registry cleaner. Run a Windows scan and tell CCleaner to remove all ITEMS found. Before running the scan, look at the scan options in the long list shown on that screen. I believe, by default, the items under Advanced are not selected. If they are, I suggest you uncheck them for now.

After the Windows scan, run a Registry scan (select the Registry button on left side of main screen). When you run the scanner, it will prompt you to backup your registry from that screen. Do so, and then proceed with the scan and fixing all items found. Repeat the registry scan; additional items may be found upon repeat scan.

I am in a battle with our association. I own a condo in FLORIDA and shortly after buying it the board CHANGED the rental rule. They did so without 2 WEEK notice to owners so we were unable to speak. The board president is what we call a dictator(his way or take highway). We had a hearing and he and one other person stated that they gave the 2 week notice sent out and posted on Sept 6. I was able to examine the computer records and microsoft word shows the created date as being Sept 16. How reliable is this?
My wife and I have been MADE out to be LIARS by him. Your help is appreciated. Thanks in advanceDid you not like the reply in your other Post ? ?

And so as I have been researching and asked several technicians. They have said And I have seen az FAR az looking for a used 64 bit Xp pro CD. they are 64bit Xp pro and there are 32bit Xp pro.. I have seen classifieds saying

when the computer first reboots during the install, don't boot from the CD but rather from your hard drive. (remove the Disc if necessary, or just don't push a key on the "press any key to boot to CD" prompt)Quote

I FORGOT to mention. I loaded my other PC with the same CD and it installed just fine.

It's not the drive...

In a sense, Windows may run faster in the 64 bit program, however, 32 bit programs will not. Many programs have 64 bit versions though. just games fallout 3. gta iv - they run well medium high graphics setting 1200x720 resolution there abouts.

Solve : Proposed Gaming Computer, any good??

Quote from: Shandy on January 16, 2009, 02:13:21 PM

Why have two DVD writable drives? You will need one high-speed DVD drive for installing software from DVDs during an installation from a disc the speed is usually LIMITED by the speed at which the disc can be read by the drive. High speed drives are cheaper if they can't also write data to discs
I dont see that either. I can see a dvd rom and a BURNER. one for slave and the other a master. That is what I set up at one time. but I came to see I didn't need it.id NORMALLY go a one GIG graphics CARD it makes a big difference. however that card your looking at buying is blisteringly fast so me id go with the original plan.

Solve : Help with cpu crash?

Answer»

was using CPU all moring and then got off for about an hour. when i came back it was off and now it WONT come back on...... What could have happened??? I didn't loose power during this time... Any ideas on how this can be fixed...

The power outlet is good
the power supply has a green light lit on the back STILL
no fans or anything but the one light

Dont really want to jump out and BUY a new M/B if that wont fix it
Any ideas would be great Sounds like the power supply is dead.hang on the power supply fan works doesent it. you had a green light.

if so try unpluging the drives and remove memory.
replace memory. check connections to motherboard and try and boot to the bios at lest.

if this works connect a drive and try and boot.

some times it only take one peace of faulty hard ware for the whole thing to fail.
for instance i have a doge ipod that if plugged in to the usb stop the machine booting. just overload protection circuitry cutting in to save the machine.Just cause it has a green light and the fan WORKES doesnt mean the psu is still good. Dont replace the ram and dont remove all of the ram either.

Solve : Anyone using mini laptop??

Answer»

I'm thinking about buying one of those 8'9" mini laptops.
Anyone has been USING it for a while?
How does the small screen feel?Quiz: How do you know is somebody
has a mini laptop as his/her main computer?

Answer belowQuiz answer,

By the flat spot on the end of their nose. Well, i use a Asus Eee PC 901, and although sometimes the screen is a bit of a STRAIN to the eye, the weight and battery life of the laptop outweighs the problems of a Netbook

Just so you know, the Eee PC 901 has six hours of battery life, and weighs less than a KG

Although the keyboard maybe hard to type, you'll get use to it. its perfect for space challenged places or for on the GO work. Thanks iamyourmom
Actually, I don't want Eee type, but regular one, like this one: http://shop1.frys.com/product/5748312?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
It has 120GB HDD. Same size, though....2lbs=1kgHmm Seems interesting, but i would suggest the Eee type, because its a solid-state drive, which means faster boot speed and relative activity speed.

Its also because the Eee series all have the 802.11n wireless cards, which is better and faster than the a,b,g wireless.

Btw, my name is Boris. Thanks for the info, Boris.
How big is your HD?only 20GB, but there are other models that have 60GB SSDsHow much did you pay?HKD 3,500.

Not that expensive~$450
I can SEE those CHEAPER here...Dunno, i bought it in Hong Kong, so i don't know about it in America

Solve : Why Doesn't YouTube like me??

Answer»

get videos from everywhere - cnn, MSNBC, comedy central, etc. Everywhere but YouTube. Every time someone sends me a YouTube link, I get a black screen with the message This video is no longer available. I can't contact YouTube anywhere on their home page. What to do? When did this start?
Any ERROR messages or popups?
What internet browser?
What Operating System?I think about a month ago. I use Windows XP and Mozilla 3.0.Any error messages?
Does the same thing happen in Internet Explorer?Funny you should ask! As soon as you ASKED me about the OS, I REALIZED that I only use Firefox, although I used to use IE, which is still on my hard disc. So I put it on and sure enough I got all of YouTube's videos. Now I guess I should contact Mozilla and tell them the problem, unless you have a quicker and easier suggestion...I really like Mozilla, so I hope I can fix it... I think either an addons has disabled Youtube somehow, you're missing a plugin or Javascript is turned off.

First, try this.

Go to Start --> All Programs --> Mozilla Firefox --> Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)

Untick all the check boxes and press Continue, then try to access Youtube.Well, nothing SHOWED up under Mozilla Safe Mode, but when I clicked on Tools, IK found ADblock preferences and I unchecked the two checked boxes. Voila! I now get everything. Thanks for suggesting a way.Good work.

Solve : DVD home movies saved to hard drive?

Answer»

Hello:

Can anyone please help me? I do not understand this.

I am using Windows Vista.

I have MANY home DVD movies of my CHILDREN. What I want to do is to copy these DVD home movies to a portable hard drive. Then I want to install software that will play these DVD home movies.

Most of my movies are about 2 hours long. But it is not continuous. For example, I will record my children swimming for 20 minutes. Then a week later I will film themfor 30 minutes at their friend's birthday party, and so on and so on. When the tape is full, I copy it to a DVD and close it out.

1. I have noticed that when I copy the DVD home movie to my portable hard drive, there are many files with different extensions. Can someone please tell me what files I want to select to play the home movie?

2. And if there are let's say, 20 files to my home movie, if I select the correct file (the first video file), will the PLAYER play all my files or will it stop after each file? If I play the DVD home movie in my DVD player, it will play it all continuolsy.

3. Since there are so many files associated with one DVD home movie, do I want to combine them someway?

4. I have been unable to play these movies in Vista using Media Player. But I can play them on my neighbor's COMPUTER using XP with Media Player. Can anyone suggest to me software that will allow me to install on my portable hard drive that will play my home DVD movies?

Thank you so much for your help and for your time. I appreciate it.

How are you transferring the videos to you external hard drive? Drag and drop?Hello:

I PUT the DVD into the DVD drive which is D Drive. Then I copy and paste to my hard drive. I suppose I have also dragged and dropped too - maybe they're the same thing...I don't know.

Thank you,

BriannaDLoad and install CDBurnerXPro (FREE )...it does a much better job burning than the built in Windows burner.Hi Patio:

I am not burning these DVDs, merely copying the DVDs to a portable hard drive.

But when I copy the home movie DVD, there are many files with different file extensions associated with the DVD. And I don't know what these files mean.

When playing my home movie DVD from my portable hard drive, what file-file extension should I select and will it play the entire DVD? The reason I ask is that my home DVD movies are made up of many recordings, such as 10 mins. of my kids swimming, 20 mins. of a birthday party, etc.

If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you so much,

BriannaYou can't simply copy DVD to a hard drive in order to play it.
You could, but then you'll see several .VOB files, which you'd have to play one-by-one. Pretty inconvenient.
You have to "rip" DVD, which will convert DVD to some playable format, like .avi.
Try some free rippers, like this one: http://www.smallvideosoft.com/*SPAM URL*/Thank you so much Broni...I really appreciate your help.

You are right, I see too many files and it is confusing. Thank you again for your help.just a small note, the program that Broni posted a link to is NOT free, merely a free TRIALI have to admit, I don't rip DVDs, so hopefully someone will come up with some free alternative.http://www.freewarezoom.com/archives/free-*SPAM URL*

Solve : Do I need to update Quick Time....?

Answer»

Well guys, I had him upload the VIDS from his camera again to his computer and resend then without changing anything, still no numbers. The only thing that shows under the video clip when he sent them with only the numbers in which the videos were taken on his camera. There are three vids and the numbers come over as, 100_0200.MOV, 100_0201.MOV, and 100_0202.MOV. These are the only numbers that show up under the videos. Is he uploading them right? He's doing this by taking out his memory card, putting it in a card reader, then taking these vids off the card reader to the computer. Should he upload these vids off his camera USING a USB cord from the camera to the computer, would that make a diffrence? Should I have him try sending them over as an attachment in an email? We are sending them through Yahoo messenger, he has 8.0 and I have 9.0, does that have anything to do with it?

.mov files should play with no problem. It doesn't matter, which way they're sent.Tried to open the videos again and got same error message. ERROR 2048-Couldn't open file 100_200.MOV because it is not a file QUICK Time UNDERSTANDS. I just got done fixing a Vundo trojan I had. From the log report from Hijackthis, a guy on this site told me to check a lot of boxes in the log to fix or delete them. Do you think we deleted something that I needed to open these videos files. Could it be I'm missing some kind of SOFTWARE? I notice that after the Vundo was fixed that I couldn't open a lot of things, even things other people sent me in emails. It wants me to download and run a Registry scan. This is how I caught the Vundo in the first place, should I run a Registry scan?See, if VLC Player will open those files: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Solve : Speaker setup?

Answer»

I've got a stereo system with good quality speakers which has 1 RCA input (red/white HOLES) which is connected to my computer with a wire on which one END is a 3.5 mm jack and on the other is RCA. My TV has crappier speakers, and I'd like to have both the TV and the computer connected to the stereo system. The TV has both a 3.5 mm output and an RCA output. Is there some sort of switch box or something I could get to connect both to the stereo? I'm willing to GO DIY with this if it's too expensive. (light switches?)

Any ADVICE is appreciated

EDIT: I just realized that I can connect the TV to my SOUND card's input jack and run the sound through my computer.

Solve : Is 'CD Earth' legitimate??

Answer»

Several months ago I bought Ubuntu from CD Earth and put it on my credit card. In a few days it arrived and all was well.
I never thought more about this until last week last month's statement arrived and I saw a charge on my card for $69.59 It was CD Earth. I had been charged $5 for Ubuntu which I thought was a fair price. Then I remembered I had received several discs in the mail which I had assumed was advertising, from CD Earth. I called them.

The girl told me I had subscribed to the discs and when I told her I only wanted Ubuntu and would be sending the others back, she briskly informed me there was no returns and no refunds. This seems a tad shady to me and I can't recall subscribing to anything.

Be CarefulThe first response on CDearth's 'testimonials' PAGE mentions free CDs
Quote

"Thanks, You went above and beyond even without the free CD's. I will definitely remember you for any future software needs."

Though i couldn't find Ubuntu on CDearth to check it out.

It also seems to have a legitimate Verisign and Mcafee security label.

you MIGHT want to check this out: http://www.cdearth.com/terms_conditions.htm It says the extra CD's were a free trial and had to be returned within 25days, it is all written in their terms and conditions but they are being quite sneaky about it.

FBPleas do us a favor. REPORT this to you local DA. And call your credit card company and have a talk with them. This kind of stuff is going on all over.

Ubuntu has now cost me 5$ plus the $59.96 they charged me for the other discs. I did file a report with the Scam Report as the previous post suggested. I talked with my credit card company, Mastercard and they will protest the charges. I doubt that will result in any return of the charges,

I did google cdearth and found several people complaining that they had received the same treatment.

Anymore suggestions appreciated.http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/cdearth.com

Me too. And I keep getting e-mails for companies the I canceled. They just keep sending bills to me because I changed my Credit Card number and they can no longer bill me automatically.

Anti-Virus and similar tools are very important. But they can not protect you form everything. Fraud can come in many forms.By the way SSL is good, but not as secure as it should be. Your browser can be tricked. This has been documented. You need that latest version of FireFox to be sure.

I have a PayPal account, and I use it, but I refuse to give them more information than what they need. They are NOT a responsible institution that will protect you from any fraud. You have to put a limit on what you do with your PayPal account. Yet PayPal is one of the better firms! The only companies that will offer you protection, as far as I knew, are the credit card companies. And even then you have to be on top of it and look at all your charges every month. Avoid ever doing any business with a stranger using your bank account. Do not deposit checks from people you do not know! Do NOT give then your account number, you social security number, your birthday or anything other than maybe your shipping address. Don't even tell a stranger the name of your dog!
Thanks for your comments.
What I experienced wasn't illegal just deceptive. I think I am pretty aware but I got caught. Fortunately it was for a small amount. I suppose it would be the same if it had been my house. I would be setting out in the street... Anyway,

Your comments made me feel better. I'll try to stay alert and spread the word.
Hang in there,

Solve : What is the Best A+ Book Out there??

Answer»

I didn't know what forum to put this in but here is goes. I want to really want learn about computers and one day take the A+ exam. I'd figure I'd start out with a book because I hate studying from websites or ebooks. Also, I know I can get a better deal if I buy the book online or at half.com so your advice is needed.I used this one

and this one

Thats a great book. I have that one.Two People voted for the same book so I guess I'm getting that one to start with. I got a Barnes and Nobel gift card for Christmas so I guess I'm getting it from them evn though they charge more.

I searched Comptia's website and didn't find any info about a new test, but I guess you have to learn the old stuff first anyways.
Once toyed with the idea of writing the A+. Had a change of mind as I
so often do. Check out www.proprofs.com...great site ..lots of exam questions.

Sybex Publication : A+ Complete Study Guide by Docter,Dulaney & Skandier
is a well written book . It's just a matter of personal taste on how the
