Solve : Linux on floppies for old pc?

Answer»

I thought we determined:
You cant install Linux via Floppy...
And the computer wouldent get that great of performance anyways... and the drive will most likely die out soon. I thought that we found an os copy that would fit?http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html
Follow the link, open the category menu, and select minimalist, and Go.
There's a few distros that say they fit on floppies. (you'll have to weed through the unmaintained ones)

You didn't TELL us anything about why you COULD not get COYOTE to work, so I think this thread is running out of steam.

Solve : Flash BIOS?

Answer»

Is there really any dangers to flashing your bios other then power interuption. I was thinking about doing this on a older machine. I have three that are a like but mite get rid of the one.Hardware incompatibilities is another problem you MAY have.

Always backup your current version before the flash...in case you do experience issues.

Here's a good read: http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/1901p186id34771.htmHowd you do thad?If you're referring to how do you backup your old BIOS...

Most vendor BIOS flashes provide you the option of backing your old BIOS up before you actually flash to the newer version. Make doubly sure this is a provided option by the BIOS vendor. If it isn't, I would strongly recommend not flashing the BIOS at all...just in case the upgrade causes incompatibilities.

Another thing to KEEP in mind...

If the system board, with all of its attached hardware, is functioning properly...then there really is no need to update the BIOS at all. It should only be DONE as a LAST resort to solve incompatibilities with on board or external hardware. Also, never use "Custom" BIOS from other companies besides the one that made your motherboard.
These will most often cause more problems than ones that are provided directly by your manufacturer...

Many BIOS updaters come with a Floppy or CD Boot... it may be a good idea to use these if your Windows Operating System is unstable.
the machine I want is too old to have that stuff, not sure but will look into a few other things I want to check just wondered.

If you're trying to burn a DVD USING Windows XP...you'll find it may not be possible. Windows XP can only copy files to CDs.

However, you'll be able to copy the files you need to the DVD using a third-party program like, Nero. There are free ones on the market...all you have to do is a search at http://www.snapfiles.com and you may even find a freeware version. Thanks saviour i will

Solve : .dmp file?

Answer»

Hey there.

Does anyone know of a forum where you can post a .dmp file which people can use open, make sense of and then help pin-point what is causing a BSOD on your computer?

Thanks. What is the title of the dump file?

You could try uploading it here... if the log is SMALL, then you can just copy/paste the contents.
You may need to put it in a .ZIP folder.

BTW: I DONT off the top of my head know of anyone here who is an expert... so, its going to be hit and miss.
Also, usually just telling us what the BSOD message is is enough INFORMATION to resolve the problem. If you are able to write that down, please do so instead of posting the dump file. Try www.windowsbbs.com
There are couple of guys there. If anyone can help me then please feel free to do so.

The computer is very old, and is the family PC and unfortunately I don't know the specs of it. The problem is that I keep getting BSOD, usually when browsing the Internet or listening to music or on MSN. I can tell you what the BSOD says if it'd help, but I assume with the .dmp file it's not necessary?

Here is the .dmp: http://rapidshare.com/files/152347115/dmp.zip.html

I tried using Windows minidump DEBUG tool from Microsoft but didn't really understand what to do, how to install the patterns.

Thanks.

They are also known as mini-dump files...generated by Windows when errors occur....
I used to analise them at another Help Forum but i'm a bit rusty so try Broni's link above.
There used to be a few people over at Techspot that also did them but i think one retired and the other moved on...

Solve : mic plug stck in hole?

he could have a flash drive next to the mic port and scramble it

You can't "scramble" a flash drive with a magnet. Or anything else data related except a floppy disk.

Dias - Thanks!

http://www.pcworld.com/article/116572/busting_the_biggest_pc_myths.htmlYes, I am saying that. It would be a powerful electromagnet and not a permanent magnet you'd need, as you see below:

No.1 in PC World Magazine's Top 20 PC Myths:

Quote
Magnets zap your data.

For venerable floppies, this statement HOLDS true. We placed a 99-cent magnet on a 3.5-inch floppy for a few seconds. The magnet stuck to the disk and RUINED its data.

Fortunately, most modern storage devices, such as SD and CompactFlash MEMORY cards, are immune to magnetic fields. "There's nothing magnetic in flash memory, so [a magnet] won't do anything," says Bill Frank, executive director of the CompactFlash Association. "A magnet powerful enough to disturb the electrons in flash would be powerful enough to suck the iron out of your blood cells," says Frank.

The same goes for hard drives. The only magnets powerful enough to scrub data from a drive platter are laboratory degaussers or those used by government agencies to wipe bits off media. "In the real world, people are not losing data from magnets," says Bill Rudock, a tech-support engineer with hard-drive maker Seagate. "In every disk," notes Rudock, "there's one heck of a magnet that swings the head."

Want to ERASE data from a hard drive you plan to toss? Don't bother with a magnet.

Solve : Old Pc Question?

Answer»

I got some old pcs an takeing them apart to PUT in new stuff an sell some of the old stuff for people who still use it an noticed. That there was like a sheet of foil between the cpu an the heatsink, this is a socket 5 an is I think one of the more collectable pentium cpus. But is the foil like a heatsink too or is it ment to boost the heat transfer from the chip.Never heard of anything like that myself.
It may have been part of the heatsink or something.
My hardware experience doesn't GO that far back if I'm honest, the earliest I've got is socket 7, just after socket 5.make sense aside from you have to be my DADS age to know.Foil inserts were used at one time but it was way before Socket 5...
Chances are that machine was assembled by an old-timer........... okayQuote from: patio on SEPTEMBER 13, 2008, 01:14:46 PM

Yeah, it just sounds like someones attempt to use the foil as a heat transfer.

But it would be best to remove this and use a thermal compound.Thats if it didnt have any problems an that I wanted to use something that old.Ahhh Youth!!!!

I just recently moved out of my house and just got my computer back. Thanks, CodyQuote

What Windows version? No I boxed it back up and brought it from my old house and the version is VistaOpen the case, and reseat video card (if separate), and RAM. While there, you may USE some compressed air to clean inside.
If that doesn't help, reinstall video driver.
You may also try the monitor on another computer, or another monitor on your computer. Many, many thanks!!!What exactly did you do?Yeah, any ideas what the problem was? (did you fix it?)No unfortunatly I haven't yet.
I haven't reset the video driver yet...Oh, so the problem isn't fixed....

I would try to reinstall the Video Card Driver.Ok I havn't reset my Video Card Driver yet but here are some more Details that might help you help me...ANYWAYS:

When the mouse is used period the screen goes blank and on my screen I will get messages such as "Auto Adjustment In Progress," or "Input Signal Out Of RANGE."

If I hold any key down for more than one second then the screen "jumps" and sometimes does the same as above.

I can STILL do everything that I would normally like watch videos, etc., and I basically guess where my mouse goes EVERY time I need to click on something. I have switched out the mouse and moniter and came up with the same results.

Hope this helps more.

Thanks, CodySince you haven't done it yet why not try the suggestions above ? ?
They just might work...and if none of those suggestions work its time for a new video card BUT MAKE SHURE to try all of the above suggestions 1st

Solve : Computer Killers - Pet Hair, Dust and Cigarette Smoke?

Answer»

If you ever cleaned inside of your computer (as you should, once in a while), you may want to read this:
http://www.technibble.com/computer-killers-pet-hair-dust-and-cigarette-smoke/
Not always everything is visible at first glance.
...and I was surprised myself, seeing what simple cigarette smoke can do:

But, watch out for this guy!

I've seen worse. Try a dell that sat in the same place for FOUR years in a guys apartment that was literally NEVER dusted. Try an IBM that sat in a dusty office for about that time and had a mat of dust under the drive, or, try to imagine a computer so riddled with Cigar smoke that though it once was white, it was now sticky and yellow. Everything inside was coated with the same RESIDUE, every fan was froze up from it, the PSU, CPU, and motherboard fried due to the fans freezing up.

I've seen worse than that though, seen one of those AMD systems with a CPU built onto the motherboard with so much dust on the CPU heatsink that the fan couldn't spin, fried the CPU. Seen a sony vaio P3 systems with dust cycles hanging from it, and yes, I've seen heatsinks and even fan vents coated in more hair and dust that the Intel heatsink in that picture Broni.

Has anyone ever opened a computer to the smell of fried components, cigar smoke, burnt fur/hair, and burnt dust? I have, nearly threw up, was worse than ten day old roadkill on the highway. That once white case was COMPLETELY yellowed from the sticky smoke and crap, I put on plastic gloves before I touched it. The owner actually took offense to that. Trust me, just working in a PC shop for a few months made me want to never see another end USERS machine.Yep - they can get gross, particularly with smoking.I've had to change out the CPU fan on one of my client's PCs every six months because he smokes near the computer so much...There was also a case on this board, where CD drive didn't want to read disks. After some investigation, it was full of cats hair.Oh, the cat hair CD drive thing reminds me... The cigar residue glued the CD-ROM drive and CD-RW drive SHUT on the computer. I'm willing to bet it ruined the lense too, oh, power button was stuck in the on position also. That's why he brought it in, he said "The power switch is stuck so it won't turn on.". Didn't take me two minutes to realize that's not why it wouldn't turn on once i got the side panel off... But yeah, computers need to be babied, 'else they grow cancerous forms of everything floating AROUND your house, oh, and a friendly note, dusts compositio is over 90% human dead skin, and animal dead skin too.

Solve : USB U3 Not Working?

I have a u3 4 gb that was unpluged forcefully. Theres stuff that I want off of it. Is it possible to try an recover the files?MANY recovery programs work for Flash memory.

After an action like accidental disconnect if you lost data, its always good to reformat as well. If the files have been corrupted while unplugging the drive, there may be no way to get them back. Its not lighting up so I mite have luck with this. It did fix my other one. But I FORGET how I did it.Try it in another computer, that was the resolution to a similar problem I had once. I tried an it still not working. It probably has the same problem in your other topic.

Have you been safely removing the DRIVES or just pulling them out?Yeah, do you think I'm that insucre with data? was unpluged forcefully, mean it was pulled out.If you just unplug the flash drive, you have probably damaged it now....same as the other one.
There is a reason why you have a 'Remove Safely' feature.

Actually - Google "FLV Player 20, build 24" - in the quotes - this is my version and this one allows 2x viewing size, the other doesn't. (or didn't).If you want / need the files to be in a different format thenwww.media-convert.com will convert and host for free.

Bummer, brought the monitor, KEYBOARD, and mouse I used on my bench hooked them up Gateway screen only. Took it all back to my bench and guess what it boot up great. Frustrated to no end any ideas out there.

frustrated GrandfatherIt could possibly be a problem with the electrical outlet you are using.
Check the following:
Make sure the computer is not plugged into a lightswitch dimmer, these can be very bad for a computer.

If you have the equipment for testing electrical outlet voltages and all that whatnot, you might consider doing that. Also check to make sure that the plug is grounded correctly.

Try another outlet in the HOUSE as well.

Every thing checked out. Hooked up another computer to same outlet booted right up. But this one back nothing. Is a puzzlement!!!!!!!!

Solve : Computer keeps losing internet....help?

Answer»

I have a DSL box, every minute or two I will lose my internent connection and DSL light on the box. Phone guy was here (this is who provides my internet service) checked all lines outside and inside, installed a new SDL box. Computer still doing the same thing, all my DSL box lights will be on for a few minutes, then DSL and internet lights go out. Once they go out, I can't type anything on my yahoo messenger or get into any sites. A minute later the lights will come back on, then everything is ok. My computer keeps doing this over and over all day long. Do I need to scan, defrag, or check for any spyware or addware or something? Ran my McAfee scan, found nothing there. Anyone have any ideas what I do next?Download HijackThis:

Post HijackTHis log.Do you have DSL filters installed on EVERY phone line in the house ? ?Yes, I have filters on all the phones. What do I do after I download "Hijack This Installer". What is that for, and what will it do for my computer? I'll see what's running on your computer, and I'll look for possible culprit.

Solve : Help with image file?

Answer»

Ok so i had someone SEND me some photos and they put them in an email in a word file. However when i try to save the file as html it only shows us as gibberish when i try to put the picture in paint program it leaves the picture with a huge white border i just want the picture to be saved as a jpeg or similar so that i can upload it to PHOTOBUCKET. Can someone PLEASE HELP me?Why would you save them as html why not download the word files as is, copy the pictures into a paint file?

FBOne solution is to MAKE a screen grab of a pic - if you alt+print screen, it will grab the active application then go crop that page within an image app to select just the pic - then save it.

I don't understand that, whenever I changed my e-mail addy the confirmation went to the new inbox.

Click Profile and in the Modify Profile pane click Account Related Settings. Change the e-mail addy to what you want, scroll to the BOTTOM of the page and enter your Current Password then click Change Profile. Worked for me..

Good luck THANKS! I went to my profile and SOMEHOW it got fixed! I am such a DUMBO.

Solve : right clicking to delelte photos won't work?

Answer»

Hello!
I recently bought a new computer and therefore it is Vista which is slightly different to my old XP. I used to be able to go into my photos and if I didn't want them RIGHT click and then a pop up box would appear saying"are you sure you ant to delete this photo"Now when I do this the box doesn't appear- NOTHING happens, unless i close the page and reopen it and then it is there?? Any suggestions would be greatfuly appreciated I am getting very frustrated as just returned from holiday and want to delelte hundreds of photos that are rubbish!
Thanks Kay Try this. Left click on a photo and drag it to the Recycle BIN. Does that work? great thanks that works- though it doesn't resolve why they just won't right clickThey don't Right Click or the Delete Confirmation doesn't come up?nothing pops up after I've right clicked- and now it seems I can't even close the photo somethimes- so I do ctrl- alt- delete and after I've cancelled the shut down suggestion the delete photo pop up is there- I think that my brand new computer may have the lurgy! If this is a recent problem, perhaps System Restore is needed.cheers will try thathave restored pc back to initial restore pint- no improvement- does anyonew know if this is perhaps normal for Vista??It's definitely not normal. What about other folders, can you right click on, say, files in your Documents folder? If so, do you have a Delete option?yes it seems other things are okay to right click- pop up comes up straight away.- I've run a couple of virus scans and everything seems to be olay- it's just when I want to delete a PICTURE- the computer is definitely seizing up now when I right click- until I ctrl alt delete and then it's fine- and the delete option comes up- I suppose at LEAST it works- but for a new computer I don't think I should be having any problems at all! What happens if you click the file once, and then press the Delete key on the keyboard?

Solve : Zip Files?

Answer»

Hello, I had zip files on my desk top that I saved on my desk top and now I am unable to open them. I think I changed a setting or something on my computer. Now, the zip files is showing up on my desk top as Media Center. Before, if looked like a folder with a zipper. Can anyone help....I am not computer savvy at all. I was trying to unzip the file and must have changed it some how. I need to CHANGE it back, I even tried to download it again to my desk top and it still is showing up as a media center file. I right clicked on the folder and clicked on open with to try and find my zip software but couldn't find it. I don't even know what software I had I guess it came on my computer.

Any help is apprecited! Try opening the preferences of the program you want to use to open the zip files. Find the file TYPE associations list, and change it so the program is the default for opening zip files. If you're not sure how to do this, post back with the name of the program.

If that doesn't work, and if you are sure they were zip files, try right clicking on the files. Select "rename" and name it something different, adding ".zip" at the end. But the above should work.Thank you for RESPONDING.....I really don't even know what the software was that I was using to open zip files. It was on my computer when i purchased it 1 1/2 ago. I will try and find out which one it was.Try these for opening zip and other formats:

http://www.freewarefiles.com/zipgenius-v_program_3344.html

http://www.freewarefiles.com/quickzip-beta_program_12048.html

http://www.freewarefiles.com/PeaZip_program_24263.html

They're all free.http://www.7-zip.org/ is one of the best.Yes, but some of the ONES I suggested unzip more types, along with 7zip files.Actually i thought 7Zip opened/worked with the most amount of formats...Peazip:

7Z, 7-Zip sfx, ARJ, BZip2, CAB, CHM, CPIO, DEB, GZip, ISO, JAR, LHA, LZH, NSIS, OOo, PAQ, PEA, QUAD, RAR, RPM, split, TAR, Z, ZIP

7-zip:

7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, MSI, WIM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS

7-zip may be great, I just don't prefer it.

Solve : Dual Harddrive Windows Booting Possible Question pt 2?

Answer»

I KNOW that is POSSIBLE to MAKE a dual boot, but is there a way to have it on two differnt drives an select which one when it comes up? I want to do this on another machine. But not sure where to find if my BIOS supports switching boot HDD's. I looked threw the manual its a Asus P3B-F Jumperfree ATX board.Quote from: squall_01 on August 08, 2008, 06:46:25 PM

... but is there a way to have it on two differnt drives an select which one when it comes up? But not sure where to find if my BIOS supports switching boot HDD's.
I can't say for sure but I'd bet your BIOS lets you change boot drives. But, that's not the method implied in your previous comment. If you set this up so that you can "select which one when it comes up", you're TALKING about a screen that appears during startup that gives you the option to choose which OS to boot. That does not require accessing the BIOS; this screen appears after the point at which BIOS setup can be accessed.

You want to set this up so that you see a screen like Figure J at http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-6157570.html If you want detailed instructions, I'll leave that to SOMEONE else. But, you can find plenty of references such as the link I just posted if you do a search.I saw an article about someone who has a computer with a switch next to the power button. Depending on where the switch is pointing, it can boot into XP, Ubuntu or Mac.
Pretty cool.hmmm.... I dont know about interuoting the power like that.Find out if your BIOS supports switching boot drives...
As Soybean pointed out this is the most trouble-free setup there is.What would the bios say like if you can change your primary instead of automatic to be user or something.Look in your MBoard manual to see if it supports it...
Or the hard way put 2 drives with OS's installed in and Enter Setup at bootup and see if it can be switched...another good ideaI'm just full of them lately...

Hi i am starting a HNC/D in computing this September and i am a bit worried that the COURSE will be to challanging for me.

I have been GIVEN a list of the books that i will need for the first year so i can carry out some initial reading. I was wondering if anyone knew where i could get some information on these topics or if anyone knew of where i could get the following in e books:

The PC Support Handbook
(The Configuration and Sysytem Guide) By David *censored*,
Publisher: Dumbreck Publishing

Business Information Systems By Paul Bocij, Dave Chaffet, Andrew Greasly & Simon Hickie

Digital Multimedia By Nigel and Jenny Chapman

The Study Skills Handbook By Stella Cottrell
Publisher: Palgrave

Many Thanks

Let me know if you need the ISBN Numbers

Steve i don't know about e-books but for soft or hard cover books, visit amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com. Used books are often available at significantly lower cost. Here's The Study Skills Handbook on amazon.com. I'd think too - some serious Googling and saving to DISC of many web pages could ALSO help out a lot. Create your own mini library - to at least add to and support what books you may get.

There is so much really useful info ''out there''.

Best of luck.eBay can be a great resource as well. But I've found that I typically get best prices by buying used books on Amazon. Thankfully, I get most of my textbooks for free through financial aid. As for eBooks...they can be difficult to FIND and many of them don't even exist. Your best bet is to visit the publishers' sites and search for your books. They should tell you if the books come in eBook format or not. In my experience, I have found that most textbooks unfortunately do not.I'd imagine it's available in e-book format, but a must is "Upgrading and Repairing PCs". I have at least 5 of the editions.

Yes, but not necessary.

Solve : switching network computer to stand alone computer?

Answer»

I have a computer that is on a network but it has to BECOME a stand alone computer. How do I do it?Unplug the ethernet cable.

We need more info, though.I have a computer that has been configured that the user must log in when the computer BOOTS up. You put in your username and password and everything is fine.

However this computer is now in a room with no network CONNECTION. I must log in for the final time and change some configurations so it does not need to require a log in screen to start. The computer will not be on the network and it will not have INTERNET. (i.e it does not need a log in screen)

ThanksWhat Windows version? It is Windows 2000. I seen it done before with Windows 98. It is something like clicking or unclicking the Windows of Family button. RIGHT next to adding TCP-IP, etc. connection.Right click "My Computer"

On the Network tab (I cant remember the exact name of the tab) go to Properties and change "Domain" to "Workgroup"

How do you know this?Maybe the CD drive is on its way out, it is after all 13 years old.
It's also quite slow at 4X speed which may account for the freezes when reading, it might just be taking a long time.tells me ALOT. Considering I think it came from a gatway 2000. Cause I had used them else where.Put it back in the gatway then?Does it work in the gateway? It mite of there is no way for me to give it input. I think the HARDDRIVE is cleaned so I cant say at this time.OK, fair enough. If you try it in another computer it might help.hard to say not able to do that at the moment

Solve : Free Music?

Answer»

Just was curious why my suggestion for free music was REMOVED from the Software section...?
I always see comments & tips on crappy Limewire or Bit Torrent sites, which certainly do not pay
royalties to the recording artist...and please tell me that all those people out there with 20 to 40 gig
mp3 players are paying ITunes .99 a song for 5,000 to 10,000 songs??
Sorry if I SOUND a bit irate...I am a little confused. What is your suggestion??, if you are canadian you basically own the rights to the recordings if you purchase them legally.. so any canadian can REPRODUCE them/share/let them leech ect, legally. My suggestion was for a Newsgroup site that you pay about $10.00 a month for 20 gigs of downloads.
The link I posted was removed...didn't really understand why? After using this I can't understand why
anyone would waste their time with Bit Torrent sites & junk like Limewire.
The link was removed because it goes against our forum's policy. Although you pay for the service, much of its material is still considered illegal in the United States, where this forum is based. None of that money goes towards royalties.

If you see other similar sites being suggested/posted, feel free to report them and they will be dealt with however we see fit. You were not being singled out; such content is often removed when we feel it is necessary. Keep in mind that a lot of it has to do with context, as some of these sites are technically considered legal (meaning: we sometimes allow exceptions if we feel it is appropriate). However, the site in question was being posted for the sole purpose of downloading copyrighted material, which is why it was removed. But the biggest strike against the site is that they are profitting from this copyrighted material, which is illegal.Thank you for clearing that up for me CB Matt. I just kind of assumed it is the same a file sharing or torrent
site. I figured someone, somewhere had bought the material, then took the time to upload it to the (un-named) server. Then for the small fee it is available for people to download. Sorry about the post, although
I still use the site myself.Quote

They are just as bad.

Quote

That is probably what happened. Someone somewhere purchased it, cracked it, then hosted it for everyone to see.
Even though he paid for it, he is selling copies to other people. Who gets the money?
That is called piracy. <-- People buying software and selling copies to earn profit. This is very illegal.

In Fact, Piracy is one of the main reasons why many game COMPANIES have gone bankrupt in the past. They spend millions of dollars making the game and sell it to get a profit. They cannot gain any profit if everyone is giving each other free copies of the game, which is why the company runs out of money.

This is the same deal with software manufacturers. They spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to make a product and sell it on the marked (which is why programs like Adobe Photoshop and Corel Draw cost so much). Once people start downloading them for free, they cannot get any profit, thus meaning they cannot improve the software.Quote from: Szpixman on August 14, 2008, 10:23:17 AM
I just kind of assumed it is the same a file sharing or torrent site.

Well, it basically is the same. However, P2P clients and torrent sites can be used legally. For instance, some people download Linux this way. That's why they are sort of a gray area. Newsgroups can be legal as well. But the one you are a member of is used explicitly for downloading copyrighted material. I hope this all makes sense.Quote
However, P2P clients and torrent sites can be used legally. For instance, some people download Linux this way.
Another example is iso file of Vista Recovery Disc: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/
Since NeoSmart company didn't want to clog their serves, with such a huge file, they made it available through torrent download only. Thanks guys...makes more sense now. Other than the occasional hard to find album or the odd picture, I never download software or movies from them. I'm almost 50 years old & can't seem to find the stuff I
prefer (music wise) anywhere else. Even online CD stores get stumped by some the stuff I'm looking for.
Thanks again.I know how you feel. My tastes are a lot newer, but most of what I like is quite obscure, so I have a fair amount of trouble sometimes because some of the bands I like aren't even signed. How obscure? Perhaps I like some of the same stuff. I'm really into stuff like The Mountain Goats and Jeffrey Lewis. Anti-folk is easily my favorite genre of music. To keep myself from rambling on about this forever, I will save a lot of time and simply send you a copy of a PM I sent someone a few days ago.

Solve : free HTML editor?

Answer»

Could anyone recommend a great HTML editor (but not WYSIWYG style). I've been using Arachnophilia for years but would like something better. Thanks.Well - the WYSIWYG aspect is very MUCH optional IMO - and I reckon this is one of the best freebies out there ..... Kompozer .. http://www.kompozer.net/ - there's a portable version too - very handy.

IIRC it's an open source prog. My main workhorse is DW 2004 but then I use that mainly in CODE mode anyways - along with text editor (UltraEdit).

Actually, as text editors go Ultra EDIT is excellent but sad to say not free ... good for code writing tho. I think latest NOTEPAD++ 4.5 is ABLE to be handy for html coding too - that's freebie IIRC.

I have no doubt a thoro Google search will turn up a load of options - check out www.sourceforge.net too. It's all about Notepad for me.Netscape ver. 4.5 included Composer which was a very intuitive WYWSIWYG page builder...If you're into your coding then GNU's EMACS is a good choice, though I've never used it for HTML I'd guess it would support it.

Solve : California Computer Lemon Law?

Answer»

Anyone here have any experience with the California Computer Lemon Law?

I've got a bad HP laptop that I want my money back for and need to know if there's a procedure to follow.

I've done some googling, but most everything I encounter is related to cars.

Thanks in advance,

RaydudeWhat you want to look into is RMA...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Return_merchandise_authorization

But before you take this route...where did you purchase this laptop? How long ago? Here's my story. Sorry so long.

Its an HP DV9000Z CTO laptop.

Its going in for its third RMA tomorrow (or whenever the box gets to my house).

Its got an NVidia chipset in it (heard about NVIDIA's laptop chipsets? google it) and its always been flaky. I have a five year old Dell laptop (P4M) which my daughter uses and is still chugging along WITHOUT issue.

This HP laptop has never actually been stable. It crashes roughly once a week when its doing well.

Right now it POWERS itself off when I run any CPU intensive applications as well as applications randomly crashing to the tune of once every few days.

It was bad from day one. I sent it back after a few of months and they replaced the motherboard. When it came back it was still defective, I waited until after the holidays, upgraded the bios, and eventually sent it back again. When I got it back it was much better. Seemed stable for six months before the first unquestionably hardware related crash occurred.

They just want to keep RMAing it. I'm tired of wasting my time and I'm tired of it failing. I want a laptop like my daughter's Dell or like any of the plethora of systems I've BUILT over the years which keep on ticking no matter what happens.

I'm in the chip industry. When NVidia implied there's a problem with TSMC's packaging (they didn't say it outright), they are saying that the packages are losing their hermetic seal due to heat (probably an adhesive issue). Unless they fix that in production, this problem ain't going away. Which means I'm in for failure after failure until I quit and buy a new one.

If that's the case, I want my money back so I can choose a different laptop so I don't have to deal with the loss of productivity, the frustration of losing work, and the whole host of other things associated with flaky crappy hardware.

From what I've been able to gather I have to sue them in small claims court. If it dies after I get it back this time, I'll do just that.

Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for reading.

RaydudeSheesh. In my opinion, it really doesn't sound like it's worth the hassle of trying to get this thing in running order. It sounds like whatever they're doing, they're not doing it right. All I can say is that you should try to do what you can to get your money back or get a full replacement. Contact the distributor, manufacturer, and anyone else who might be able to help you out. If you have no luck, then I agree that you should consider taking them to small claims. Just make sure you have copies of all of the RMA information and anything else that might be important. If you can't put a decent case together, it probably won't be worth the effort. But if you have evidence of its continual failure, then you just may have a chance.Thanks. I'll have to dig out all the RMA stuff. I should still have it.

I'll give them one more chance and then I'll mention small claims court and see how they respond.

Failing a useful solution, I'll file a small claims suit and see what happens.
I don't know how anyone else on the forum might feel, but I think it's worth a shot. Be sure to LET us know how it works out.Check this out:

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/08/28/nvidia-55nm-parts-bad

Apparrently All nvidia 65nm and 55nm parts have failures in the teens percent.

Keep in mind the part in my laptop is older than any of those (I think). My guess is the problem has been around a very long time.

Hm, interesting article. I'm not quite sure if it actually applies to you, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to keep this info handy.Update. I got it back yesterday. They replaced the heatsink and a cable (didn't say which one). Its working well. They did a good job.

I'm feeling that you're spot on Matt. This chipset is good. I'm just having bad luck. Time will tell if it will last though.

RaydudeI'm keeping my FINGERS crossed and wishing you the best of luck. Let's hope things keep going smoothly.

Solve : Trouble with installing from boot disk?

Solve : making a new icon?

Answer»

I attempted to make a new Icon. I saved a picture into my Documents as a .jpg file to use as my new icon. I right clicked on the existing icon and OPENED the properties. There is a button there to change the Icon. That button opens me up to an option of 3 different icons...they are firefox icons. (which I don't want to use and is why I am changing it ) when I click on the Browse I can locate the picture I saved in my Documents under pictures but when I click on my pictures files it says there are no Icons in that folder and it takes me to the icons folder for the computer that has all the folder pictures and icons that I am familiar with that is used for the computer. My question is how do I make this picture that I want into an icon that I can use to represent this game. I hope I am making myself clear and I need someone to explain this so that I can understand. I learned on DOS and have self taught myself computer stuff by trial and error over the past 12 years but I am not very good at all the lingo.
Thanks for any and all help.

amandad37You might need to use the .ico extension possibly with the correct resolution aswell.

FBThis is a free icon editor program that I have seen recommended several TIMES. http://icofx.ro/index.html I’ve used it once or twice, but not lately.

The simplest way I know to make an icon from a JPG is to open the JPG in any image editor [MS Paint, etc.], crop the image so it is square and then reduce its size to 32 pixels each way. Save the image as an .ICO file. If that is not an option, save it as a BMP file. If you saved as a BMP, go to Windows Explorer and rename the file, but only change BMP to ICO. [If you get a warning about changing the file extension, just click OK.]
Save the new icon in a PLACE you can always find it. If it is ever moved the shortcut it goes with won’t be able to find it. [Put it in the program‘s folder if it goes with a program or make an ‘Icons’ folder in your ‘Pictures’ directory.]
Next, right-click on the shortcut icon you want to change, select ‘Properties’ and click the ‘Change Icon…’ button on the ‘Shortcut’ tab. Use the ‘Browse…’ button to navigate to the icon you just created and click ‘OK’ until you are back to your shortcut. The new icon should appear right away.

This might not be the best way to do all this, so anyone please correct me.
It may well work if you make the icon image bigger than 32 pixels, but I think that is the standard desktop icon display size so the extra pixels would be wasted.
This worked for me on WIN XP, but I didn’t try Vista.
You might want to write down the location of the original icon, in case you need to go back to it.

Hope this helps

A similar THING HAPPENED to me with my HP PSC 1310. I've had it for about 2 - 3 years now and I can not make any scans at all. I can make copies, which is weird, but not scans. Whether I hit the scan button on the device or on the computer nothing happens at all. Thanks, but NONE of you have any specific ones to recommend?Well, they all pretty much do the same thing apart from a few specs and abilities. Some mite be serial or peralle others mite have usb connectors in the front. Mine does I have it handy from time to time. There is a sale on the HP4280.

It is 30 bucks less than the HPJ4580...it does not have a fax like that.
What should I do...is the HP4280 any good or should I spend and go higher for the 4580?
Thanks.

Solve : Adobe photoshop pictures on cd?

Answer»

I am having trouble making a CD slideshow that has a clear picture and smooth transitions. Also, when I go to BURN on a disc and insert a disc, it says "please insert a blank CD or CDR." (and they are blank)
Any ideas?Do you have a CD Burner in your computer?
(Sorry if that sounds LIKE an obvious question)

Also, what Operating System are you USING, and what version of PHOTOSHOP?
