Solve : About the latter strokes of typing a long post, also in profile settings?? |
Answer» Why does this forum allow a certain amount of text to be entered while composing a post or entering text into the 'signature' section, then, after whatever amount is the limit, 12 lines I guess, it starts making you scroll down to the latter section after every single key stroke. It sure irritates me. Does anyone else experience this or do I just type too much? I haven't ever had this problem on any other forum that I can remember. I remember reading a thread somewhere around here where somebody commented on a post as being the longest post ever on this board. I think it was bc programmer but I can't remember. Why does this forum allow a certain amount of text to be entered while composing a post or entering text into the 'signature' section, then, after whatever amount is the limit, 12 lines I guess, it starts making you scroll down to the latter section after every single key stroke. lectrocrew, I believe I know what you're trying to explain and I've experienced it and I agree it's very annoying. This reply will be short so it will not cause the problem you're describing since, as you've said, it occurs when the text being typed for a reply exceeds 12 or so lines. Well, let me ramble on here just to make this reply longer and see whether it happens for me now. You mentioned this happen on every computer you've tried and you've tried quite a few. What browser do you use? And, what's your OS? And, do you get a scroll bar on the right side of the message composition box when your typed text (along with any quoted CONTENT) exceeds 12 lines or so? The problem is not happening for me as I type this. And, this reply is not long enough that it would be happening if it were to occur. Now that I think about it, I believe I may not have experienced the problem since the recent upgrade of the SMF software used for this forum. Also, I'm using Firefox 3.6.10 to type this and my Firefox was updated to this version perhaps about the same time as the forum software update. So, I can't say for sure why I'm not experiencing the problem now but, indeed, it's not happening as I type this using Firefox 3.6.10 on my Windows 7 computer. People keep bringing this up and I have yet to experience what they are referring to, and considering the length of a lot of my replies, you'd imagine I would have encountered it. Therefore, the best conclusion I can think of is the issue is at least partially on the client-side (browser, OS, etc) In fact, I do recall Nathan noting that it was related to IE in some way quite some time ago. No idea if that is the case now. I know it at least happens on IE6; not sure about later versions. It doesn't happen to everyone. I experienced it with IE (ver 7 & 8 ) but have not had it happen with Firefox.Quote from: soybean on October 01, 2010, 09:35:02 PM What browser do you use? And, what's your OS? And, do you get a scroll bar on the right side of the message composition box when your typed text (along with any quoted content) exceeds 12 lines or so? I'm working out of town living in a motel so I only have 1 notebook and 1 desktop with me right now. The notebook has XP Pro SP-3, IE8 and Firefox 3.6.10 - The desktop has XP SP-3 and IE8. But I have seen this issue in the past with my other PC's. My self-built desktop runs Vista X64 and my Dell runs Windows 7. And yes there is an active scroll bar (there is always a scroll bar but the scroll arrows remain inactive until text box content exceeds the alloted space in the basic text box). If there were no scroll bar then there would be no way to view or edit the content of the text located below the allotted basic veiw of the original text box size. - This problem exist only when the amount of text entered exceeds the space in the basic text box, then, with every stroke of the keyboard, the text box goes BACK to that basic box veiw (automatically scrolls to top). Another issue I think is related, and for those of you who have not had issues concerning this - try this: Ok it just now started doing this with my reply I'm trying to post so I'll explain the rest in the next reply. Actually I just popped open IE to check and it happens there. doesn't happen in FF, that's why I've never experienced it. It's a problem with the javascript, or how IE's textarea responds to it; OnChange is linked to a function called storecaret, which looks like this: Code: [Select]function storeCaret(oTextHandle) { // Only bother if it will be useful. if ('createTextRange' in oTextHandle) oTextHandle.caretPos = document.selection.createRange().duplicate(); } Seems that when you set the caret position, the textbox REVERTS to the top, at least with IE's implementation. I'm guessing if a fix were to be implemented it would probably somehow save the scroll position and then set it after setting the caret Position.Another issue I think is related, and for those of you who have not had issues concerning this - try this: Open your profile > settings > modify profile > forum profile, (where you enter your signature) *NOTE: back up the contents in the signature box with Notepad so you can re-enter after this test. The text limit in that box is set to 500 (characters, spaces ect). Clear the contents in that box (right click > select all > right click > cut) then go to the bottom of the page and click change profile. Now go back and enter 475 characters, spaces (whatever text is fine just for this test). Now click on change profile again at the bottom of the page. Now go back to that text box and try scrolling down to the latter text. Does the scroll bar keep trying to return to top?BC, You posted before I could type my next reply, my typing teacher would not approve. But I'm glad we have you guru's to fix issues like this (whatever a caret is ). Thanks!!!Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 02, 2010, 07:48:55 PM Actually I just popped open IE to check and it happens there. doesn't happen in FF, that's why I've never experienced it.I just "popped open" Firefox and it doesn't happen. I never realized it was an issue that only happens with IE. I like Firefox but it doesn't function correctly with some secure sites I go to for my business so I kind of got in the habit of using IE lately. Quote from: lectrocrew on October 02, 2010, 07:41:52 PM ... there is an active scroll bar (there is always a scroll bar but the scroll arrows remain inactive until text box content exceeds the alloted space in the basic text box). That's true for IE but not for Firefox. Firefox shows no scroll until the contents of the message box exceed the size of the box.Quote from: soybean on October 03, 2010, 08:47:27 AM That's true for IE but not for Firefox. Firefox shows no scroll until the contents of the message box exceed the size of the box.Thanks. I see that, and I'm also back to using FF as my default browser. I always liked FF over IE anyway. Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 02, 2010, 07:48:55 PM Actually I just popped open IE to check and it happens there. doesn't happen in FF, that's why I've never experienced it....I, too, have noticed this with IE, and it's a real PIA. I use IE on one computer and FF on the other. Only place I've seen it occur is CH Forums.I'm now looking at IE's message box, there are 2 small parallel lines at the bottom middle of the box that allow you to stretch the vertical size of the box. This seems to remedy the situation (at least for the 1 post). [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Quote from: Computer_Commando on October 04, 2010, 11:09:37 AM I'm now looking at IE's message box, there are 2 small parallel lines at the bottom middle of the box that allow you to stretch the vertical size of the box. Solve : Which laptop is the best?? |
Answer» Hey, you guys! I really want a laptop for Christmas, but I'm not sure which one to get. My friend says I should get a Macbook Pro, but it just looks too fragile to me. Plus I've heard the battery life isn't all that great. Does it have to be a Mac? On that note, I'd recommend a Hewlett-Packard or IBM laptop, with XP (I suppose Vista, but wouldn't recommend it), anything else is essentially crap.Quote from: Austin H on November 22, 2008, 08:37:25 PM Quote from: Dudeoxide guyMay I ask why you say this?Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on November 22, 2008, 08:42:02 PMDoes it have to be a Mac? Quote from: Austin H on November 22, 2008, 08:37:25 PMQuality of the product.Quote from: Dudeoxide guyMay I ask why you say this?Does it have to be a Mac? That and credibility, IBM is about fifty years old and have been supplying quality PCs since 1981 with the original IBM-PC (I don't know that much about the history of Hewlett-Packard, but I know they did employ a young Steve Wozniak in 1973-75 (YES the products are good) and in the end, that's credible enough for me. Companies like Acer and Dell make very cheap products and a lot of them (right now Dell has 26 laptops available) which fall apart or BREAK not long after they're purchased, I know this from experience with Dell, I went through 3 Dells before purchasing a Hewlett-Packard laptop and later a MacBook. In the computer industry, you can never trust anyone under thirty. (This is why Microsoft just doesn't sit well with me)HP laptops are notorious for their overheating, and dell for their bad quality, but what about the other companies? My cousin has an Acer laptop and it's gone through *censored* and it's still working. Then there are other laptop companies.....such as: Lenovo Ausus Fijitsu Compaq Gateway Toshiba Those are just some of the main brands. I myself have a Lenovo (formally IBM) and I have no problems with it at all. Don't judge Windows laptops just because you don't like Dell. Quote In the computer industry, you can never trust anyone under thirty.Heh, Apple is currently 32 years old. Yes, it is (technically 31 from the IPO, but it was active as early as 1975 with the the two Steves building the Apple I, but officially it's 32 years old) and until about two years ago I hated Apple, mainly from ignorance and the hate of conforming to the "IPOD Nation", but changed my mind when I got one. It was one of the best things I've ever had. In only minutes I want from a kid who hated Apple simply for it's popularity with the iPod, to an Apple fan-boy. Soon after, I became a hardcore Macintosh fan-boy, with a passion. I hated Microsoft for about a year, until some personal events took place and I've grown to acccept them as an decent company, though still second to Apple, but it'll still be a few years before they're legitimate in my book. Along with the "under 30 = worthless" idea, two years ago, Apple only had about 8-9% market share in the computer industry, in the time since then, they sky-rocketed to a current Market share of 19-20% (with a whole 3.5% in the past 3 or 4 months). IBM was thirty years old (about, I'm not going to look it up) when they released the IBM-PC, it sold for $10,000 and outsold Apple's Apple ][ (the only competition) which sold for about $1,500 by almost 80%. All of this supports the equation: Company > 30 = Success.Anyone bashing laptop brands needs to realise companies do not always make their own laptops. The same OEM parts may be shipped to MSI, Dell, Falcon NW, Alienware and HP, who will then all rebrand it, customize it a little, mark up the price and sell it on. Also, I've had no trouble with Dell laptops, I've found they're generally quite sturdy and well-made. The MSI-based laptop I have has been pretty bad for me, and don't get me started on the broken IBM under my bed. It all depends on the OEM and the reseller's service quality.I've found the Business line of Dell laptops to be near bulletproof...i show them to Dell bashers all the time. The business laptops are great, I agree. I especially like the Vostro lineup.Quote from: Noodles949 on November 22, 2008, 06:19:40 PM So, I need one that has a pretty good amount of memory, good battery life, and isn't too expensive.Even laptops/notebooks at the low end of the price spectrum are now sporting 2GB of RAM, which should be plenty for most users. One brand that hasn't been mentioned here is Acer. I just browsed newegg.com and saw this, which looks like a great deal: Acer Aspire AS4530-5627 NoteBook AMD Mobile Athlon 64 X2 QL-60(1.90GHz) 14.1" Wide XGA 2GB Memory 160GB HDD DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 9100M G - Retail. It's currently available for $449 and, out of 50 user reviews posted, has a 92% 5-star rating. You don't see that very often. I have an older Toshiba and it has been a workhorse!! I love it, and Toshiba's are very affordable.Same with me- and by older I mean a 440CDX, manufactured 1996. Still works, having trouble with it's CD-ROM drive though, which I imagine is to be expected. It was upgraded to 98SE at some point. I also have a IBM thinkpad- AC adapter failed. have to use dock 1 to run it. Still runs DOS 2000 flawlessly, and wfwg 3.11 last formatted 1996... both of them... In any case- I'm looking to purchase one next week- can't buy online though So I'll have to go to future shop. Saw one for 299$ in a flyer- with wireless-N, but I'm going for another Toshiba Satellite- Just want Wireless-N to go with my router... Can't remember the price, but I'll have about a grand to drop on one. Quote from: Austin H on November 22, 2008, 08:52:52 PM Companies like Acer and Dell make very cheap products and a lot of them (right now Dell has 26 laptops available) which fall apart or break not long after they're purchased, I know this from experience with Dell, I went through 3 Dell's before purchasing a Hewlett-Packard laptop and later a MacBook. Where is your evidence to support that Acer laptop's break all the time?! I have had mine for 3 years, and treat it like crap, not once have I had a problem with it. You talk about Dell's being bad because of your past with them, but not Acer's... Funny that.... Chris xx |

Solve : Identify malicious blogger? |
Answer» There is a person making untrue and malicious comments about me (unregistered and ANONYMOUS) on a public forum message board. Am I ABLE to find their ISP or name anywhere?Talk to the person who manages the forum or website, usually the Administrator, and tell them exactly what is going on. Am I able to find their ISP or name anywhere? To do what? Stick with Calum's advice.Rumour is it may be one of the moderators of the web site. Anycase I've found a lawyer who says he can find the ISP, IDENTIFY the IP and serve the letter to cease and desist under threat of litigation. All for under $1000 AUD. Worth a try to have them outed. Thanks the advice good people.Quote from: gforce06 on July 16, 2008, 03:31:09 AM Rumour is it may be one of the moderators of the web site. Anycase I've found a lawyer who says he can find the ISP, identify the IP and serve the letter to cease and desist under threat of litigation. All for under $1000 AUD. Worth a try to have them outed. Thanks the advice good people. if these statements really were untrue, why are you going to such great lengths (and monetary costs)? I get the feeling this has resulted from a flame war and the loser wants revenge Quote Rumour is it may be one of the moderators of the web site so you know the rumours about you are untrue, and yet all other rumours are truthful and have reliable sources? Good luck to you I suppose. I would strongly advise talking to the webmaster or Administrator of the site first. Check the registration agreement, if it states that members shall be free from harassment or somehting of the sort then they will be bound to do something about it.1,000 AUD seems excessive. Sounds like this is tit for tat here...Quote from: patio on July 16, 2008, 10:17:14 PM 1,000 AUD seems excessive. Agreed. I've had to deal with defamation of character before and I never would've considered such a LARGE amount of money. If that's the route you want to take, then so be it, but I would suggest taking Calum's advice before opening a lawsuit.Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 16, 2008, 06:52:30 AM Quote from: gforce06 on July 16, 2008, 03:31:09 AMOh OK- good luck then. It seems people seem to forget that there are people on the other end of their posts, and can become real jerks. I suppose I kind of did that too... No offence taken and thank your attention and advice. Thanks your considered replies. The "rumour" mill must have been working overtime as the OFFENSIVE posts have been removed (without my contacting the administrator directly) and attacks on myself have ceased. Unfortunate that attacks on another profile coach have now commenced and I've forwarded him my solicitors details. |

Solve : Rock Band guitar fail? |
Answer» Gah I thought this crap was fixed a while ago... My rock band guitar stopped working completely, it won't connect. Before when the batteries were dead or it was out of range and I pressed the connect button the red light would flash but now it doesn't do anything. This isn't one of the first guitars with the messed up strum problems, it's a newer one with the magnetic sensors. I don't get why this HAPPENED, it was working perfectly fine yesterday. I TRIED putting in new batteries, and the SWITCH on the back IS on. I opened it up and all the wires are ATTACHED. The warranty is expired, since it's 60 days and I bought the game in May. Anyone know how to fix it? Also would it be cheaper to send it to EA or to buy a new one? |

Solve : Vertical colored band running through center of monitor? |
Answer» I have about a 2" vertical multi colored band that flickers running through the center of the monitor. I have DOWNLOADED updated drivers, checked registry, checked to be sure everything was plugged in tight, taken the monitor to a repair PLACE who left it running for 24 hours and the problem did not show up. Then took the tower to same place and left it for a day. Problem did not show up. Device manager says video card and monitor are working properly. Repair place wanted to replace video card (over $500) on the premise that it must be that since the monitor showed no problem when left connected so LONG. If it were the video card, why would the device manager say it was working properly? Some days it is FINE and most days the problem occurs. Sony computer, FLAT screen, 3 years old. Any ideas? Thanks.Device Manager isn't always correct diagnosing hardware... |

You don't need to do anything with the tags, they are just to help you if you are searching for a particular picture... Do you mean an avatar on this forum? Go to your profile and then Forum Profile Information. Now, go into ImageShack, click the image you want, (it should open) and click on the field "IMG code"... Now go back to your profile, and check the icon "I have my own pic:", and press CTRL+V, and the URL of the picture should be in the box... Now just save your settings. Any luck? Our team didn't make semifinals (due to a piece of rug that wasn't TAPED down well enough getting stuck on us; consequently in the match after a staff taped it) but we got something amazing done at least. We took with us 3.5 tons (7,000 lbs) of books to the book drive, accounting for about half of all the books donated. So we got a big trophy for that. Well, I think that if you moved your files from the Itunes Music folder onto an external hard-drive, you could play the Itunes-purchased ones on a different computer by verifying they are yours over the internet with the password of the account they were bought with. yes you can do that, as long as the computer has internet access and one song can be used on no more than 5 computers! |

Answer» Any new idea's??Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on September 06, 2008, 08:27:28 AM ......No access panels, ports or screws?yes but some how after you take the sides off the top comes off or something some how an not sure how to do this to get in side cause theres an even smaller cover shielding the board. Can you post a picture? This may be similar to a Compaq PC I used to have, circa 2001.yeah i'll try an get one the WIERD thing is I didnt get the post ether so I'm sorry for late posting.http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/kk403/squall_131/DSC00796.jpg http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/kk403/squall_131/DSC00797.jpg http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/kk403/squall_131/DSC00798.jpg Hope this helps, sorry it took me so long to get them up. That's almost the same as mine, but slightly different. On mine there were 2 Torx screws, at the bottom of the case just under the PSU, which needed to be undone, and then the case just pulled apart. It's not an easy case to work on, and most components are proprietary too. Hope this helps a little.some what, you really cant tell but I think the screws are gone from the back side, I think I some how have them.If you can grab some more pics of the rear of the case, SPECIFICALLY near the bottom, it may become clearer and I might be able to help you more. I don't have my Compaq any more because the case annoyed me too much, I accidentally broke the motherboard trying to remove it because it wasn't STANDARD, and of course neither was the PSU so that went too.yeah thats the only trouble with these. probably monday if I can get to it.http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/kk403/squall_131/DSC00803.jpg http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/kk403/squall_131/DSC00804.jpg http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/kk403/squall_131/DSC00806.jpg http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/kk403/squall_131/DSC00808.jpg http://i310.photobucket.com/albums/kk403/squall_131/DSC00809.jpg Hope this helps out alot. I found some parts which was wierd "screws" but wondered why they got too.Ah, I THOUGHT you were having trouble getting inside the case at all. I see you've partially disassembled it, that's as far as I got before resorting to brute force and DESTROYING things. There's no point taking it further anyhow as the components you can't get at are all proprietary. In short, you could take the memory, HDD, CPU and HS, but the motherboard, case and PSU will be no good unless you got another system exactly the same. Hope this helps.I only took the sides off an such. It was like that when I got it. yeah thas the only down side. a side from not haveing bigger ram for it an I dont have a usb keyboard. |

Solve : Torture Test? |
Answer» ...or Bookmarks Link Checker: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8474I've found DEADLINK to be more thorough...OK. I'll try it. QuoteI have 3122 Bookmarks Sad These go back many years and many are kaput! Nostalgia...Very NICE program. THANK you One little thing though. When I used OO to count my bookmarks, they were 825. When I opened DeadLink, it said 544. ?? In any case, I had some duplicates, and dead ENTRIES, so after cleaning, my final count is 481. Quote from: Broni on September 28, 2008, 01:53:43 PM Very nice program. Thank you In OO, when you filter, the displayed results hide the rows that don't meet the criteria BUT increment the row numbers as if the hidden rows were there. After the filter, copy the worksheet and paste it in a new sheet; the row numbers ought to increment by 1 so the last row number will now give an accurate "count."Actually, I deleted empty, and folder lines by hand, so the numbers were in correct sequence.Quote from: Broni on September 28, 2008, 09:03:37 PM Actually, I deleted empty, and folder lines by hand, so the numbers were in correct sequence. Strange, then...my OO results agreed with AM Dead Link. Hmmmm......1374 bookmarks...... I think I will pass this test. (I have a folder called Tech News with 600+ bookmarks, just to let you know) |

Solve : Windows XP freezing during Printer Installation? |
Answer» I am fixing my friends notebook. Her computer was badly virused and needed a clean install. I went ahead and reinstalled everything. Her USB ports dont work due to wear and tear from her siblings yanking cables off. I told her to get the PCMIA card that has USB connection. The Ipod connected and worked fine, when I connected her Cannon MP600 printer it asked to use windows update to locate the files. I clicked yes and everything seemed fine until it said hardware found installing. Windows XP froze literaly, nothing moved. I waited for 3 hours but nothing happened. I had to reboot by holding the power button |
