Solve : Windows XP freezing during Printer Installation?

Answer»

I am fixing my friends notebook. Her computer was badly virused and needed a clean install. I went ahead and reinstalled everything. Her USB ports dont work due to wear and tear from her siblings yanking cables off. I told her to get the PCMIA card that has USB connection. The Ipod connected and worked fine, when I connected her Cannon MP600 printer it asked to use windows update to locate the files. I clicked yes and everything seemed fine until it said hardware found installing. Windows XP froze literaly, nothing moved. I waited for 3 hours but nothing happened. I had to reboot by holding the power button

I downloded the drivers from cannon and installed before connecting the printer. All installed fine, when I connected the printer. the computer froze

I restarted the computer in safe mode and connected the printer. The printer connected fine and didnt freeze. I tried to print but it said the print spooler SERVICE is not available in safe mode

I went ahead and restarted the computer again with the cable already connected. Windows loaded and just as all progams finished loading it froze. Only programs it has running in the background is McAffee Antivirus, Nero, and Groove 2007.

I connected the printer with the same usb cable to my notebook and it works fine.

The computer is a HP Pavilion ZE2000
Windows XP SP3
AMD Athlon 1.60 Ghz
256mb RAM
60 GiG HD

Any ideas on how to resolve the matter ? thanks!Do you have the CD that came with the printer? If so, use it and REINSTALL the printer.

Also, does it work properly if it's already attached?I did use the ORIGINAL cd but no luck. the moment i connect the printer via usb it causes windows xp to freeze. I erased printer drivers via uninstall, I CHECKED for any remains on the registry but still no luckTry this:
While your printer is plugged in, or else it wont be detected in the device list;
Right click "My Computer" (which, may be in the Start Menu, or on the desktop) and go to "Properties"
Click the "Hardware" tab, and find the "Device Manager"
Find your printer driver.

Double-Click it, and go to the "Driver" tab, and click "Uninstall"

This will remove the driver, after doing so, restart your computer and follow the installation instructions.
