Solve : Capabilities of Laptop Card Reader.?

Answer»

Hope that this is the right place to ASK this question.

Where, in my laptop, can I find what the max sized camera memory card is that can be read by the onboard card reader. I have a Toshiba laptop and have been told that the readers OFTEN have a max which they can read. I do not want to buy a card that is too large for the reader.I'll be honest - I wasn't aware of laptops having inbuilt readers but ---- I'd have thought somewhere in the spec's for that MACHINE there would be some info on any max LIMIT.

Occurs to me tho that you could consider a multi card reader to use via USB - and they are relatively very cheap these days - that should present no upper limit to size.A lot of newer laptops have built in card readers, mine does.

The size of the card that can be read is only limited to what the computer can read, and what format your card is in.

What you should be concerned about is: What is the biggest card your camera can take?
The Camera will have limitations, the computer will not.

I moved this topic from "Off Topic" to "Other" THANKS for your reply.

Solve : Something very strange is going on here!?

Answer»

Hi, This is weird. I have a USB phone called Magicjack (phone over internet) People in my contacts list keep telling me they are getting calls from my number and when they answer no one is there, Instead a song is played for them. All the SONGS played HAPPEN to be in my ITunes library. I am not making these calls in fact Im not even home during most of them and I live alone so no one else COULD be doing it either. What do you make of this? ( maybe thats why its called Magicjack!)Is this "Magicjack" phone capable of voice command? It it is, it could be picking up various things. Try disabling Voice Command. No it doesnt have voice commandI've seen the commecial for the Magicjack and it seems like its too good to be true.
Did the device come with a software CD?No, It self installsQuote from: kelley k. on August 17, 2008, 12:29:57 AM

No, It self installs
There is absolutely no need to INSTALL a program to even control it, and log into a VoIP type account? Not even software you download from the Internet and then run?

A device like this doesnt typically have a generic DRIVER in XP.

Solve : Connecting Computer to TV from another Room?

Answer»

I have recently gained a roommate in my PLACE and I've moved my computer into my room.

Now the trick is previously I had my 32" Flatscreen TV hooked up to my computer and I was running Downloaded TV Shows, Movies and other random stuff. In short it was Sweet. I still want to do this but from another room.

Is there anyway to do this wirelessly via some hardware/software and also get sound through. Or am I going to have to create some little mini system to place next to my TV. (aka transfer files from my main system to the smaller system and let it run the shows. This is not the ideal option).

Ideally I want to still use my TV and have the TV hooked up to some hardware to connect it properly from my Computer. I have a wireless mouse and keyboard as well so all depending on range, I'd love to just carry the mouse and keyboard to whatever room I want and run my computer.

With TV now set up for computer CONNECTIONS. I doubt I'm the only guy who this has occurred to. HOWEVER, it's probally not very popular considing the degree of average computer literacy. I'm hoping someone here can tell me something or direct me where I can. You all have to admit that this would be very sweet and I bet everyone would do it if they had the ability.

Yep it is!

Spector, I think getting a long cable would be the cheapest alternative.Thankyou Firballs now that I know the precise name of what I'm looking for I've been able to find some intelligent results compared to my previous searches and some better priced ones. (my previous search strings found several interesting but not entirly reliant results, including this site =)

Cables could be cheaper but I'd be traveling over 30' with good quality video and AUDIO cables. That adds up. Also there is the simplicity, and neatness factor. Not having cables to trip over and being able to transfer this set up to new locations as I please is with some extra $$.

I'll post what I find out once i have done some research.

Solve : How to Spot a Scam??

Answer»

I was sent an email from one of my friends and I thought it was pretty interesting.
Here it is (modified for the forums):

HOW TO SPOT A SCAM?
Is it really free or is there a hidden agenda?

It might be a scam if...

It's just too good to be true. A free car just for taking a survey? A laptop computer for a single mouse click? No way.

You're a winner...but you have to pay a fee to claim your prize.

It's free with shipping and handling. If it's five or six bucks, fine. But make sure it's not $59.95

The website offers nothing but free stuff. It's probably an email collection site for spammers.

There's a lot of fine print and you have to agree to accept all the terms.

You have to make a purchase to get the freebie.

You must give a credit card number to get a free item.

There's a free "trial period". This may be true, but the company can make it difficult to cancel, and if you forget, wham! You're on the hook.

Lol, just what it said in the email Thanks for sharing carbon.EULAlyzer can be HANDY when it comes to all of that fine print.

Everyone should also watch out for collection companies saying that you owe a certain bank a certain amount of money. Always do your research. If it weren't for me doing this for my grandma the other day, she would still think she owes over $10,000...

And be careful when ordering things over the phone. Some catalogs such as Collections Etc. will sometimes add you to expensive programs without your express consent.

Not sure how it happened, but I somehow got signed up for a company called AutoVantage. I received a letter from them over a week ago and immediately called to cancel. Instead, they extended my trial, thanked me for my business, and hung up. I'm still trying to get them to cancel it for me.

Out of curiosity, I decided to test out their service. I don't want it, but since it's a free trial, I might as well try it out. They're supposed to give discounts on car RENTALS and hotels, but in city I searched in, I couldn't get any results.Chris, you brought this up in my head:

If you are in the US (or dealing with a US business) call the BBB or send a letter. (Its more professional to send an actual letter, not email, or at the very least a fax)
File a formal compliant. They will help you get through everything.

Still waiting on Verizon.. they ought to get a nice formal complaint resolution letter soon if they dont take care of things.

Has anyone here actually read through an entire agreement?
Personally, I have only had a few that I have gone through:
Google (Advanced services, such as AdSense)
Microsoft Windows XP (I was really bored)
And the default SMF agreement, as well as my modified version.Quote

I've gone through the BBB a couple of times and so far and they have never done anything to help me out. I've never even received a response from them. I was really hoping they would've helped me out a couple of years ago when I had my laptop stolen by a McDonald's employee and I was being harassed and threatened with physical violence by the manager, but I was left to fend for myself. And the POLICE up here are a joke and actually started accusing me of selling my laptop and only pretending that it was stolen. I don't know where in the world they came up with that. Also, they apparently searched the manager's HOUSE without ever telling me. I only found out when he confronted me, wanting to kick my *censored*. Luckily, I'm a pretty big guy, so he backed out and left when I accepted the challenge.I feel for you Chris, people like that make me sick.

I encrypt my drive (NOT bypassable without loosing all data) and LOCK my computer at a security chip level (Not easy to bypass, most companies require that you provide owner identification) and at a hard drive firmware level (Bypassable by yourself, but still works well) for one major reason:
If my laptop gets stolen, I want it to be nothing more than a plastic rectangle to the thief. I dont really keep important data that would be threatening if it got stolen, though I do have private data that I wouldn't necessarily want others to read.

But thats just the doldrums, when no one will step up and help you, and when people do that. These days, it's a really good idea to take such precautions. Unfortunately, back then, I didn't have nearly as much computer knowledge as I do now. So, not only did some undeserving jerk end up with a $1500 machine, he also ended up with all of my personal data. I just hope he had the decency to format the drive or at least delete all of my stuff.Quote

Well, they're not billing me yet. I'm not home right now, but when I get there, I plan on making another attempt to cancel the service. I'll just have to become even more demanding this time, I suppose. My card is through Wells Fargo, and I've had to contact them before about activity like this. Unfortunately, they also usually put a hold on my card for a few days, so I'm waiting for a time when I'm not going to need to use it.

Solve : Plug stuck in computer port?

Answer»

I have plugged in one of the round plugs in the back of my laptop. I cannot get it out. Obviously, it is the wrong size but it fit perfectly. Can anyone give me any ideas on how to remove it? Thank you in advance!What was the PLUG for? What were you plugging in?

What kind of laptop is it? What model number does it have? The round plug that comes to mind is PS2 - usually keyboard or mouse. It has an offset peg which should prevet wrong ALIGNMENT but - yeah - more info might help.And a PICTURE. Sorry, I was out of town this morning. The plug is the round one like you would hook to the back of a television. There are also red, yello, and white single prong connectors on the same cord. You use it to hook a video camera to your television.

I have a Dell latitude laptop and there is a port on the back that is round. It actually has a picture of a TV above it. I inserted the plug and did not have to force it. Now it will not come out. I am thinking I will have to cut the cord and just leave it in the COMPUTER unless someone has another idea. If I use pliers to try and remove it I think I will damage the computer.Sounds like RCA connectors - red/white for audio - yellow for vid. Only other round one I think of on a puter (sometimes) is "S" video but that is multi pin.

Just re-read your post - ahh so it was one of those you plugged in. Still wondering what you plugged into - as can't see an RCA going into something different. On occasions those plugs can grip real tight on an RCA socket - and so a careful twist with pliers while trying to withdraw just might help. They go on much easier than they come off.

If you do happen to resort to chopping its cable - drastic measure - be very sure puter is totally powered down and DISCONNECTED and then be sure no conductors can short out.I would take it to a repair shop.

Squallish to English = However, what doesn't make sense is the fact that the AA Batteries Charge, not the AAA batteries.And, the AA and AAA are the same brand, right?

Does your charger have a switch or setting that should be changed when changing from AA to AAA or vice versa?

Have you tried any other AAA batteries? You needed google for that? Yes, thats whats wierd. Nope, it lays between the aa's an they should just charge. Sadly no there expensive.squall, I love reading your threads.

They don't make sense, and they never go anywhere much, but they are so entertaining. Thanks for the fun.

I'm not sure how it works in your country but here the police contact the phone line provider they don't tap DIRECTLY into a personal phone call. in SHORT you can but it'd be pointless.

A few things... changing your frequency would mean you wouldn't be able to communicate with your phone line provider, making your phone useless.
That was my thought as well - how would the handset communicate with the cell tower?

As far as 'random' (just for the fun of it) tracking by the police goes, even a small jurisdiction would have too many cellphones, I would think, to track your location, if they weren't otherwise concerned about you.

However, I am fully aware that just because I'm paranoid does not mean they're not after me.

Best of luck.If you are trying to avoid police, or if something happens to you and you fear being traced by such means (which, is against the constitution, I believe, since that would be considered entrapment...) turn your cell phone off, and remove the battery, and SIM chip if you can.
Or just completely destroy your cell phone...

Other than that, police can not "tap" into your phone, nor can anyone else, unless you are in Analog mode, and voice privacy is unavailable.
Your phone will usually notify you if privacy isnt available.

It might also be useful for you to know:
They can only find out what cell phone tower(s) you are connected to... which, is only an APPROXIMATE location... in some cases, its about as good as using an IP address to find where someone is. Don't you ever watch the movies? If they wanted to find you that badly, I'd say there would be an easier way of finding you.thanks for the information , i heard the police had a program called switchback way back in 1993 that used triangulation to find cell-phones Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 25, 2008, 03:24:49 AM

Solve : HELP with Task Manager?

Answer»

Ok, I dont know what happened but my Task MANAGER is messed up. I press CTRL-ALT-DEL and instead of the plain ol task manager all I get is a box with Running Processes. No tabs, no File, Options, View, bar; not even the minimize or X box to close the window. Please tell me there is a way to fix this? I can not figure it out!Out of interest - start Task manager these other two ways - just to see if the result is the same .

1) - Hover on an empty part of task bar and right click and select task manager.

2) - --> Start - run - taskmgr.exeI love the old favourites... the good ol' task manager in "tiny footprint mode"...

Task manager has two display modes, normal and tiny footprint.

1. Normal mode (tabs, menu bar, TITLE bar etc)

2. Tiny footprint mode

To restore normal mode, double-click in the border around the edge.

To switch to tiny footprint mode, double click the border of the area below the tabs

Well dang it Dias - yet another GEM I had forgotten all about!! Nice, Dias!AMAZING!!! Thank you SO MUCH! Never FAILS, sometimes the easiest fix for something you worked WAY too hard on trying to figure out. MANY MANY MANY THANKS! Hey Dias, time to make an FAQ!

Solve : Symbols on laptop case showing what to plug in?

Answer»

Is there somewhere I can see pictures of the little symbols on my laptop that show what goes in what connection port. Most of them I know but after buying a LOCK I don't see the usual rectangular opening.

There is one but it has a symbol that I don't recognize. I don't want to ruin something. The COMPUTER is an IBM ThinkPad. Are you talking about the images that come up on the screen? All the system images are usually stored in the %systemroot% folder, where %systemroot% is the main system folder on your HDD.Check your manual or IBM's website for the laptop's connections.

Does the symbol look like this: ? If so, you're good to go.Thanks. I tried IBM but they referred me to manual on computer and there it was. It is a Security Keyhole. Looks like 2 boxes, one on TOP of the other, on an upsidedown T. Good. Now I am set for my trip.

Thanks to all who replied!! Now I will check that manual first. Didn't even know it was there.

SamsamGlad that you got it figured out - those MANUALS can come in handy!

Wrap the other END of that lock around a .357 magnum

Best of luck!

Solve : i cannot remove 2 files?

Answer»

i have a game downloaded and TRIED to take it out when finished with it ( a free one ) and it will not go

also goggle tool bar , which i have never used

these are both in add and remove

the game comes up , cannot uninstall , corrupted installer

goggle do'es nothing at all

thanks for any help, harryTry reinstalling the problem software and then try to uninstall again...i will install the game again , but i never have installed goggle unless it came free with a program You can also try this free software: unlockerthank you will try unlocker i have read it and understand

will there be files /programs in there that should not be touched

because you said unlock and remove all

harryharry...

Try the reinstall/uninstall process first.

Sometimes programs leave behind files that will not be deleted after uninstall. Usually, your notified by Windows that there were certain files that weren't deleted during the uninstall process and give you the path to those files/folders so you can manually delete them.

If you cannot remove these files in the CONVENTIONAL manner...unlocker will assist you with that. You just NEED to know the CORRECT pat in order to do so.

I hope I haven't confused you...thank you i will let you knowthank you , i got rid of 2 , goggle tool bar is in add and remove

when you click remove nothing happens

i took goggle out of ( files ) to-night but the above HAPPENED before thatYou're welcome...

Are you still having issues removing them? If Google will not let you remove it...you can always download/install it, again...go to Add/Remove programs, and try removing it again. hokedoke

Solve : Viruses, malware, trojans, worms and root kits?

Answer»

Just general thoughts so putting this here.

What is it drives these clowns to write and disseminate all this crap? Is it just WICKEDNESS, knowing that somehow they have made some folk's lives miserable? I often wonder and also wonder if they ever get hit themselves and so have to suffer the nuisance and problems.

Like as not they are tight as tight with their own security but aware at same time how many vulnerable machines are out there to mess with - COUPLED with very non savy users sometimes.

I well remember the first virus - back in DOS days and well before Pentium was even thought of - just basic 086 with maybe a ''monster'' 1 Mb hard drive! The virus that led to all the text falling down like rain!

OK - mini rant over!Some write for fun...
Some write for experiment
Some write without the intent that it will actually get sent out. (Thats why they make viruses that purposely spread from machine to machine)
Some do to say they can (this is very very common)

Other than that, they usually run and compile viruses on a test machine... loosing none of their data.
Pretty good for them, isnt it?

Want me to write one so you can send it to the jerk who infected you? I bet all he will do is write another one and send it back. (Nah, I wouldn't do that. But, I can write an incredibly sucky one... wait! They all suck!) some write for fame
some write for cyber terrorismAnd of course, some do it for money.
And I'm sure there's probably some excitement in the thought of being ABLE to cause trouble for other people without them ever knowing who you are.

As for them getting infected...I'm sure many of them are just as vulnerable as anyone else. But the real "experts" are people who are very familiar with anti-virus programs and how they work. After all, that's how they are able to figure out how to bypass the systems.*opens QBASIC and inconspicuously sends a zipped EXE to CBMatt*Mmm, snack.Quote from: CBMatt on August 20, 2008, 11:37:47 PM

Not like you know your distributing it either...

Hmm, you've got to wonder how something like that would hold up in court. Of course, I suppose I wouldn't really expect these guys to penalize through conventional means...It reminds me of the kids who video their crime and post it on YouTube. Doing something illegal here....would you like my name and address?I think Some Anti Virus, spyware, malware companys create nastys just so they can sell you software!. To fight It.Thats something that has been talked about for many years. People take the software/malware and can dissect it to the point of being able to tell one author from another, where it came from and so on. If it were happening it probably wouldn't be long before the person/company was outed.

Solve : SKYPE - computer shut down?

Answer»

hI

I have a toshiba laptop and Vista Home premium....i have downloaded Skype and i have been using skype to dial out...it has been working...but on three occasions over the past three weeks..when I clicked the contact name to dial out...the screen shut down and a blank screen...then i had to reboot the computer ...then ok for a week or so....last NIGHT..i used skype to do a local CALL ..then it happened again...for some reason..my pc shut down because of skype...any explanations... has anyone encountered such problems. thanksIs this a recent problem or have you had this problem since you got skype?

Any error messages?

Does this happen with other programs?Can u tell me if it does this in safe mode; below is how to boot into safe mode.

By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer beep when you reboot it, you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

Have your tried a reinstall?.

Hi

thank you for your replies...after the computer shut down....i turned on the computer again and it was fine ..so far it has happened 3 times...it happened when I clicked on the certain contact and clicked on the "green" PHONE to say Go.....each time the computer shut down ...there is this message asking if i want to be in a safe mode or normal mode..i think...each time i clicked on normal mode...am i supposed to switch it TO SAFE MODE...what is the difference between normal and safe mode.....i just downloaded skype on this computer...thanks...Booting in to Safe Mode basically starts your computer with the least amount of drivers and startup items.
Following up on Annons suggestion, I don't think Skype can run in Safe Mode.

Does the problem only happen when you click that specific contact?

Quote

Is this a recent problem or have you had this problem since you got skype?

Also, try reinstalling Skype.What are computer specs?Hi

I just uninstall Skype and reinstall Skype and I tried to phone a couple of contact....the first one was fine and then the second one....the whole screen turned blue...computer shut down again....a friend of mine says the problem lies with Skype not my computer...my computer is Toshiba and it is new..a friend suggested that it was due to high traffic .... had put up a note on Skype forum but I have not received any response

what do you mean computer specs...where do i find these?

Hi

I did some searches on the internet and found this on one of the computer forum...this guy was having the same problem that I am having..but he found a solution...i don't quite understand his reply ...that is the following:

copies from another computer forum

I had an Identical problem as Posted by: peter at April 4, 2006 12:04 PM.
My computer blue screened while using Skype with the message:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with a error ISDN_U.sys

It has taken me 8 months to SOLVE the problem, neither Dell (my computer manufacturer), Hayes (The manufacturer of my ISDN terminal Adaptor) or Microsoft seemed able to help despite numerous conversations.
Finally I did a search of my HARD disk and found three different versions of ISDN_u.sys. I replaced the version on my windows\systen32\drivers (dated 3.7.2002 size 577Kb) with the one supplied with my Hayes Accura ISDN TA (Dated 5.2.2002 size 596Kb)

I have not had a BSOD since!!

As for me..i got the same blue screen and the only way is to turn the computer off computer completely and reboot it...As for me when the blue screen appeared there was no message at all....just a blank blue screen...

I am not a computer geek so i do not quite understand how he replaced the file....

Can anyone explain the above process in simple words...thank you Before we can advice on anything else, we need to know your computer specs, and what is the error message, you're getting.I want to know this:

Quote
Does the problem only happen when you click that specific contact?

thanks

it does not matter who the contact is...for instance yesterday I clicked on a different contact say B and it was fine and then I clicked on contact C...and then the "phone"...it rang..and then followed by the blue screen...i am going to uninstall and reinstall Skype and see what happens...i will try and get the computer specs..

thanks guys...and error message...

And she SAYS younger people And humans overseas are GOING to smaller sized Computers like those on cell phones.She also claims that computers are not selling now days because of the economy. This sparked a heated debate between us. I say computer sales should be on the rise because more people are STAYING home due to the high gas prices & bad economy.What to you think? /b]I'm not sure i agree with either of your arguements but i have to agree with your g/f the PC is getting smaller and smaller, although there is a gap between fully featured PC and handheld computers. In a few years there will be no gap and instead fully functioning (unless they have MS WINDOWS... lol) PC's will be handheld. IMHO

FBI like my bulky box, I don't want a big *censored* table Microsoft! I want a big *censored* case with plenty of raids to hold more hard drives.I don't like small laptops.....In my experience, they have bad cooling, too small of a keyboard, lack of ports and too small of a screen.
However, it is true people are starting to go for smaller devices because of their portability.PC sales are actually pretty healthy right now and have been for 2 years or so...

Solve : External Raid Enclosure??

Answer»

I have a friend who loves his MacIntoshen. He has a pretty old 1TB external raid made by LaCie. It died, but he got his data off before it died so when he asked me to look at it, I THOUGHT "A hard DRIVE must have died."

It has PATA interface so I bought four cheap 500 GB drives to PUT in it. I put them in and the THING just sits there scanning the hard disks and making clicking sounds. I thought perhaps its formatting but after the LaCie ran for sixteen hours and still wouldn't let me access the drive. And after successfully formatting the old hard drives in a PC I think its the electronics that are fried, not the drives.

Now I'm thinking about buying an external enclosure for the four drives I bought. I've found a few that support PATA (most are SATA now) but I don't know how good the quality is.

Here's one a Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817332008
And another at another site: http://www.xpcgear.com/e350b4u.html

What I'd like to do is find out what's wrong with the LaCie but I haven't found any utilities to help me diagnose it.

Do you guys have any EXPERIENCE with external raid enclosures? What brands are good? He prefers firewire, but said USB would work for him as necessary.

He uses it as a media storage device. He makes his own movies and records and mixes music.

Any advice appreciated.

Solve : CPU Help!!!?

Answer»

I'm tring to understand the cycle of information that the cpu use's in order to get an output. Just the real basic stuff such as

Input -> Control unit/Manipulator
ALU Unit (E.g. Ans=5+3)
Registers/Understands/Decodes instructions
Shifter
Stores Results ->Random Access memory Output ->
Additional Storage

my graph isnt the greatest but am I missing anything? Also, is the shifter a seperate operation or is that part of storeing it. I cant find anything that helps explain it.Is anyone having problems understand this or something?....Patience is a Virtue..................... yes for it TAKES two hours for the cpu to complete one cycle. You inspired me to do some searching of my own and I found this:

Quote

A CPU Cycle refers to a single pulse of the computer clock. For example, a 4 Mhz CPU will have 4 million CPU cycles per second.
I thought the numbers were....smaller....

That MEANS my CPU will have 1.7 Billion cycles per second.... It does but I'm joking, it compeltes ALU stuff so fast it seems like long mathmatical problems are easier then it looks.Your model is probably not too far off - in basic terms I'd think. Only thing missing there is cache usage .... Periodic shunting of data to cache to have it 'held' briefly while other processes completed, then recovering that to integrate with other data for a result.

I think ALU is ACTUALLY usually playing a greater part than we might suspect - not just math per se. STACKS and registers will be a part of the whole as with the earliest processors ..... in the old terminology - 'peek' and 'poke' is alive and well!

I haven't dug DEEP on the web but feel sure there is info out there to detail this quite fully.

Solve : Weird problems?

Answer»

Okay here is a list of problems as a guru I can't figure out.

*My BIOS says my Hard drive is failing, but it's said this for the last 2 years.
*I have a replacement drive already, but the drive isn't failing the bios just says it is.
500GB Sata II Seagate drive as a replacement for a Samsung 160GB

*2GB ram
*2Ghz AMD Sempron 3800+

*Windows XP Home, Runs great, the odd crash and non-responsive program.
*Have Windows XP Pro installed too, runs like crap, uses 100% CPU with nothing running
*Have Windows Vista installed now, but it uses 100% CPU with nothing running
But my original OS runs perfectly fine, XP Home.

So what do you think the problem could be, The hard drive is failing, I just don't see it, and I should remove it ASAP, Or the board is chewed I need a new one.

I'd start by downloading diagnostic software for the drive from Samsung. The report will be more reliable than the SMART report that your BIOS is using.I have a Samsung SP1604N/R
I tried their HUTIL for Samsung SP1604N and it couldn't detect my hard drive,
There is no N/R on their site :/Quote from: alextepes on August 25, 2008, 07:01:42 PM

I have a Samsung SP1604N/R
I tried their HUTIL for Samsung SP1604N and it couldn't detect my hard drive,
There is no N/R on their site :/
Odd that the Samsung utility couldn't detect the hdd.

Nonetheless - As interesting as it might be to chase problems in 2 out of 3 OS's, I think that I would eliminate a probable problem and install the new hdd. Think through how many OS's you want to have and partition accordingly. I'd install the Samsung as a second drive, copy the data from it, DoD wipe it and throw it away. A hdd that is questionable is useless, as far as I am concerned.

After the OS re-installs, if you still have problems, post back.

Best of luck.Right, well I installed Vista and XP Pro on the 500GB Sata II, so I'm not sure if the IDE if it's bugged like you said could cause issues with another drive making the CPU always use 100% CPU, I've updated all the drivers in the other OS installations, I'd love to just move onto the 500GB, but I want to be sure it won't effect anything, like for example, I take out the 160GB, put XP Home on the Sata, Check it, if it runs good with it on the Sata(Brand new inside the box no troubles so far with it), then I'd be a happy mofo, then I'd try the Windows Vista for a bit, though, I want to be sure, because if it's a mobo problem and I wipe the drive and there is nothing wrong with it and I can't run XP Home with decent usage anymore, that'd be a big issue for me because I'd have to get a new motherboard which would suck, but I'd get it, the problem would be TAKING out the cpu I suck with the sockets because it's super easy for me to bend those prongs and I don't wanna ruin a perfectly good CPU lol, so many options so many decisions, that's computing.

Thanks for letting me unload here, as I've REBUILT computers for at least 8 years, never had any problems doing what I do until they made the socket type boards.I think that you have installed XP Pro and Vista on the new (500 GB) hdd - am I correct? If so, do you still have the same problems that you had when you ran those two OS's from the 160 GB drive?Neither drive has given me any trouble until recently, because XP Home isn't the original installation, I've reformatted a lot, some time it would do the 100% thing as I'm updating drivers it'd go away, and now it won't seem to go away with new OS installations, I'm on Vista now one the cleaned 500GB hard drive.

With the IDE unattached/unplugged.

The CPU usage seems to be dropping a little, Hmm, I'll go about my business installing drivers and see what happens.Well I give up, it's still using way too much CPU, I understand Vista would/should use 20 - 40 percent of my CPU just because it can, but I've had Vista before now on this MACHINE and I got an 8.0 index, I was able to run Aero etc without much troubles, had some issues with Media center but I only had 512MB ram at the time, and didn't have the option of booting up with my Nvidia Geforce 700+MB PCI card, though I use the integrated one for testing/long periods of use because my Nvidia card heats up way too fast.

http://i33.tinypic.com/2euk6rp.jpg

Here is all the info about my current setup, it's pretty straight forward, and is more then ENOUGH to handle Vista.

Though it'll sit forever on 100% CPU though it's great for basic email - hardly any tabs in Firefox lol.1) Vista does not use 20 - 40% CPU doing 'nothing' or because it can.

2) What do you mean when you said that you got an 8.0 index before? Do you mean the Windows Experience Index? That has a max of 5.9 - please don't ask why!

3) Go to Task Manager, Process tab - what is using the CPU?

2) Sorry that's when I was on a topic forging the experience index, however what I got before that wasn't bad either, the only thing "bad" I got was the graphics card because it's on board but it was still capable of handling Aero, just not while games were running

Solve : SICK COMPUTER OR FUTURE BOAT ANCHOR??

Answer»

Hello everyone!!
*respectful bow*
I wasn't sure where to post this, and I couldn't find anything in FAQ, so if I have the wrong department or area,plz forgive me,point the way to where I should go & I'll take it there. Did I mention that I'm new here??? *nervous grin*

anywho, I have a computer that was given to me *groan* and it's been constant headaches ever since. here's what I know about the system:
Microsoft XP Home
Version 2002
SP2
AMD Athlon Processor
1.41GHZ
1.00 GB RAM
It has a Hard drive that I added when I got it(meaning it has 2 HDD)
It has a DVD player/recorder that I added
It has a CD player that I added
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the Hard drive, the DVD drive & CD drive all came from an HP Compaq Presario 1220NX.
The hard drive I installed is 80 GB HDD.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
the original HDD that is still in the computer, is 37.2GB, with 31GB of free space
the computer had no CD/DVD drives until I put them in.
it had a 3.5 floppy when I got it, has since quit working,so I threw it out.
It did NOT have any of the removable slot things in front when I got it(I put those in too).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK the problems I'm having are these:
intermitten freezing up/crashing(the FAQ didn't work for me)
takes 3-5 MINUTES to get to the welcome screen
generally speaking, this thing is so slow,I could get pregnant,have a baby, & watch
him graduate from middle school B4 it does what I want it to...*sighs* I'm serious.
my sound just quit working the other day,when I tried to fix it, it(the computer) tells me that the sound program is not installed*groan* so now I have no sound whatsoever on my computer.
The main HDD (C:) has so much fragmentation in it/on it, that every disk fragmentation Programme I have used has failed to correct it.....
Which begs the Question, is this a sick computer or future boat anchor??
I would start with clean Windows install.Go into the bios and choose "Load Default Settings", save and then exit.
If you got a valid Windows XP Key and CD with the system then do a reinstall. If you don't have the CD but have a key. Look at the key sticker to see what version of XP is installed and then grab exactly the same version off the torrents. That is a bit grey legally speaking but I think its okay because you actually have a legal license. I saved my Brother-in-laws "Vista Upgradable" laptop by grabbing XP Media Center off the torrents and using his key to install. It saved him from having to buy the CD from Acer and saved me time.
The best thing you can do to improve performance is to buy a new hard drive that is much bigger. Hard drive performance is the biggest limitation on "perceived" system speed (IMO). If you buy a $55.00 250 GB hard drive your peak data rate will probably go from about 20 MB / second to about 50 or MB / second. The system will boot twice as fast and applications will start twice as fast.
I want to warn you about drivers. There is a tendency for people to grab the latest video driver from ATI or NVidia when in actuality it might be faster to use an old driver that was created when the video card in the system was made. By making unified drivers, NVidia sacrifices some performance for older cards to support newer cards. (they always optimize for the new cards, they have to because of benchmarking practices of REVIEWERS)
In general the safest driver to use after the reinstall are the ones you find at update.microsoft.com, but as I found out with my Bro-In-Law's laptop, if you have ATI and install MS ATI driver from windows update, and then try to install ATI's driver? It'll likely be a disaster. I got infinite BSOD and reboot once I did that I had to format the drive and start from scratch (the third time I might add) with his Acer lappy.
The other speed boost you can make is to UPGRADE RAM, but I can't see an Athlon Processor taking more than a GIG. Its possible, but not likely. You have to go to crucial.com, put in the motherboard or system information and it will tell you how much ram you can fit in it.
Good luck and let us know how it goes,
Raydude
Which begs the Question, is this a sick computer or future boat anchor??
All current computers are future boat anchors But, yours is sick; doesn't seem catastrophic, though.
Do you receive any error messages?
Multiple, random errors could indicate that the PSU is failing; can you swap it out for another one?
Interesting about the fragmentation - with 84% Free Space on C:, there ought not be a problem defragging unless there is some sort of file corruption or bad sector issue. I would download and run the hard drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's site.
I agree with Broni's suggestion for a clean (not repair) install of XP. But, give some consideration to the PSU, especially if it is a proprietary machine; OEM's don't "give away" many extra watts, PSU's efficiency declines with age, and you have added several power consuming components.
First off, I wish to thank everyone for all your help. I REALLY DO appreciate your help.*respectful bow*
Even tho I live for the computer, my knowledge of computers is somewhere between novice & intermediate.
I forgot to mention, that this computer of mine has 1024 of RAM. sorry.
I was thinking too about replacing the "C:" drive(the original HDD).
I do not have either; no key & no CD....
So from what Y'all have said, I think that maybe replacing the HDD may be the only option besides buying a new unit. Quote from: MJ on August 27, 2008, 12:19:27 PM
Interesting, I don't think that a new hard drive was the consensus strategy; a) test your current hard drive, 2) format and re-install Windows - if that means buying a Windows CD, so be it. Where did the OS that is presently on the computer come from?
Good luck.Quote from: drmsucks on August 27, 2008, 03:55:25 PM
#1) How do I test the Hard drive?
#2) When you say buy a CD, do you MEAN buy a new OS CD??
#3) This computer was built by the guy that gave it to me. where he got the OS from is anybody's guess.
He gave me a Windows XP Pro CD, but the computer wouldn't load it/reload it cuz what is on the computer is newer than what was on the disc....plus I didn't have the key/code for it.
So tell me straight out if you can, did I misunderstand you about buying a new hard drive??
If I did buy a new hard drive, could that possible fix the problems??Quote from: MJ
#1) How do I test the Hard drive?
There are many tests you can download but if you can't boot, they are useless. The easiest way I know to test it is to pull it out and stick it in as a secondary drive on another system and see if it can read it. If it can, there's hope its good enough to use. Then you can run chkdisk on it and see if it can be repaired. If it has errors (enable SMART in the BIOS to find out) then you can use the other computer to copy your important files on to.
There are other things you can do. You could download Knoppix or Ubuntu linux or I believe there is even a linux rescue CD you can download for free and burn to CD and it can do some diagnostics for you on your windows Drive. However, that takes a bit of learning as its linux based.
If you get a Windows CD and boot it, it can do some diagnostics as well and may be able to repair files that got erased through some viral or antiviral activity.
Quote from: MJ
#2) When you say buy a CD, do you mean buy a new OS CD??
Yes. But you have to get Windows XP. My advice is to not touch Vista with a ten foot pole. Its a lot better than 18 months ago, but its still really not quite done cooking yet.
Perhaps then he should offer some support for you. Or perhaps you should ask him where to get a cheap legal copy. Or perhaps you should leave him out of it because he meant well but made it so you can't get updates or boot a windows CD, etc etc etc.
Quote from: MJ
So tell me straight out if you can, did I misunderstand you about buying a new hard drive??
I suggested a new drive for increased performance. I spoke a bit ahead of myself.
Quote from: MJ
Perhaps, but until you know if the hard drive is bad you can't know if a new hard drive will fix it.
Please note: if you do choose to buy a hard drive will be a good time to buy a new OS because you can buy the cheaper OEM version of windows with a new hard drive.
1) Test the hard drive as suggested in Reply #3.
2) I said, "Buy a Windows CD," if necessary, so, yes, a new "OS CD."
3) The question was, "Where did the OS that is presently on the computer come from?" Apparently, the answer is from the CD that was supplied with the system. It is easy to fix the version problem, it is not easy to fix the lack of an authorized key unless you can contact the person who built the system.
Relative to the new hard drive, you certainly didn't read my reply; I said to test the hard drive. In fact the salient advice given to you was: re-install the OS x3; test the hard drive x1; try different PSU x1; and replace the hard drive x1, with the latter suggestion given under some gratuitous theory of "improving performance."
You had questions concerning my post. I answered them here. Disregard the "answers" posted by RayDude concerning my post.Quote from: RayDude on August 27, 2008, 08:45:13 PM
He/she can boot; and most, if not all, drive MANUFACTURERS' diagnostic utilities have their own boot disk and don't require an OS.
RayDude - You answered two questions that were posed to me. In the future, refrain from answering questions posed to other respondents or questions that are generated from their responses; it is potentially confusing for the original poster and it is impolite.
If the computer you are SERVICING has an unknown password,
follow these steps to CLEAR the password. These steps also
3. Wait approximately 5 minutes.
4. Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the computer.
Solve : Domain not Accessible on All Computers - Help!?
Answer»
I establsihed a new Domain (gen-als.com; 209.235.147.171) on January 26TH through CenturyTel.Net (on their server).
I can browse to it from my work computer (ISP = Centurytel), I can browse to it on my BlackBerry & from my wife's iPhone (both AT&T), I can browse to it from my son's computer (IPS Unknown). The domain shows up on WHOIS.
I cannot reach it from my home computer. At home I RUN two Win XP's on a wireless network through ISP ComCast.Com. When I try to browse to it I GET an "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" ERROR from Windows. I have cleared the cache via Windows Explorer. Still doesn't work.
When I try to PING the domain it times out.
There should have been enough time for the Domain to propogate through the DNS servers, right? Why can't I get to it from my home computer?
Any help out there? (CenturyTel doesn't have a clue.)
Solve : USB Ports and Hibernation?
Answer»
Hey there guys,
Got a new Acer Aspire 5535 for Xmas, and ever since ive had problems with it.
One of the problems is that a USB device will not be recognized unless I turn my laptop on with the USB device attached. Otherwise it jsut isnt recognized under 'My Computer', nor does the device show any recognition itself. However this isnt always the case, every now and then USB deviced will work STRAIGHT away when I plug them in. Its a massive pain in the *censored* when they dont work THOUGH, especially with my iPod.
A similar issue is with Hibernation, Restart, Shut Down etc etc. Sometimes it will work, and other times it wont. If it doesn't work itll just HANG at the 'Windows is Shutting Down' screen, and the CPU light will flash, and the WLAN light will flash, but less frequently.
Funnily enough I think there is a relationship with the USB ports issue, as when one seems to be working the other will, but when one doesn't, nor will the other.
Its Vista with SP1, AV etc etc loaded.
By the way for the record, I cant stand Vista, and if I had the choice, XP would be loaded onto it in a flash!
Thanks in advance
Chris
xxI would contact Acer support regarding these problems. And, if the problems are not resolved, I'd be asking for a replacement. It is under warranty, right?Yup, had it a month.
Do you think its a Harware issue?!
Chris
xxBefore concluding it's a hardware problem, I think I would restore the system to it's ORIGINAL configuration from the recovery partition. It has a recovery partition, right? Then, I would follow the advise at http://adrynalyne.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!AB9DE24BE9AF1B9F!303.entry and see where I stand.It does have a recovery partition, yea.
Right mate, thanks for the advvice, ill GIVE it a shot soon.
