Answer»

however i cant find an answer to the problem facing me.

i got hold of a 2nd hand packard bell imedia computer for my kids to use.The computer is RUNNING XP home and seemed fine....................my problem is whenever i try to plug anything in to it,plug in the mouse and it works, plug in the keyboard and neither work...unplug mouse and just plug in keyboard its fine but again plug in both and neither work. i have tried using the keyboard and mouse ports or using the usb ports and the same thing happens,if i just have the mouse plugged in then try to plug anything else into a usb port again everything stops working!!!!! on their own each port will work but when i try plugging in more than one thing they all stop working.any ideas would be gratefully received as my kids are starting to think they will never get to use it It sounds like something on the motherboard is messed up. That may have something to do with why the original owner got rid of it.i thought as much, just hoped i was wrong...thanks for the replySure. Just remember that you get what you pay for. Perhaps you should try a PS2 to USB converter, or a USB Mouse and Keyboard?

Could solve the issue by eliminating the PS2 portsQuote

have tried using the keyboard and mouse ports or using the usb ports and the same thing happens

I think the OP already tried that, Zylstra. Quote

Oh, alrighty then.
Perhaps drivers should be REINSTALLED? USB operates off from the PS2 ports, so I cant imagine it being a hardware issue. My wireless mouse and keyboard share the same USB port. Perhaps something like that could work for you?Are you shutting down or restarting before adding/removing things with PS/2 ports or stopping the USB items correctly? Any PROBLEMS seen in Device Manager? What if you uninstall all instances of keyboard and mouse there and restart the machine?Quote

i tried removing the mouse and keyboard manually and now i have mouse on usb and keyboard on ps2 but whenever i try to plug anything else in they all freeze on me and i have to turn off and start again using just mouse and keyboard Do you know how to remove the CMOS battery
or use motherboard jumpers to let your BIOS
reset to factory defaults?

READTHISPAGEi managed to locate and remove the battery,as for the motherboard jumper i couldnt find it but if i have to i can get someone else to locate it(im sure a shop would be able to point it out to me for free).I have formatted the computer and put xp BACK on but still no changeIf you have the keyboard and mouse working..LookHere
