Solve : My battery is not detected or charging? |
Answer» Okay. So I just bought a vaio computer from my friend. The battery however is not detected or charging. I have been tolod by sony that it is not the battery but they want to charge me to fix it. They think that my computer needs reconfigured with windows services and other advanced system settings for the battery to be recognized and charged. I would be glad to SET up a remote desktop so you could look at my computer and try to solve this problem. Thank you. also my friend updated to windows 7. thanks again.Code: [Select]I have been tolod by sony that it is not the batteryHow do they have known it is not? It could be or not. Had you taken it for them to test it? They think that my computer needs reconfigured with windows services and other advanced system settings for the battery to be recognized Have you gone thru your Device Manager? Follow this site, it might help you. http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2010/05/26/solution-for-laptop-battery-not-charging-when-plugged-in/1. Unplug AC adapter. Shutdown 2. Remove battery, Connect AC Adapter 3. Start windows7. Remove Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, 4. Shutdown, Remove AC Adapter, Install battery, Reattach AC Adapter. 5. Power up - Now Plugged in and Charging.. Found that and it helped another person with a diff brand computer. Might as well try it. Be sure to follow exact order as stated and let us know if it worked. What's your friend say about the battery? Was it working for them, or is that why they sold it? It's got to be a bad battery, or a bad charger. I've had a number of laptops, and a number of bad batteries or chargers, but I've never had to go into software to fix the problem.Quote from: rthompson80819 on August 31, 2010, 10:20:15 PM What's your friend say about the battery? Was it working for them, or is that why they sold it? Its a win7 issue and happens on some laptops when you upgrade to win7. The OEM Windows from Sony includes the drivers /software needed to run the battery charging. Why would anybody take something so simple as batteries and charging and make it more complicated? My guess is Sony wants you to buy the win7 from them for the laptop to make the money. I prefer OEM OS's for laptops anyway since they include software and drivers for their specific model. Laptops often include things that desktops don't have. Figure its more propitiatory device wise anyway. (battery being the issue here)Okay got more info. My battery is not being detected. My system setup files related to the battery of the computer are corrupted and need uncorrupted. I also the battery utility installed, updates and edit settings installed. Any ideas now?Clear out some info you just posted about installed, updates on battery. Solve : compCompressed files? |
Answer» I was told by a computer repair shop that I have a bunch of compressed files that are taking up LOTS of room on the hard drive. Is there anyway to tell what is in these files so they can be deleted? Thanks for the help.It depends on what kind of compressed files they are. They could be compressed ARCHIVES (like 7-zip, WINRAR, zip) or they could be NTFS compressed files. What do these files look like? What are the extensions on them? Did you happen to ask them what the location of these files is? Or extension?Quote from: Linux711 on March 17, 2012, 07:21:51 PM It depends on what kind of compressed files they are. I did find some things that could be deleted.Probably 99% of the files listed I don't have a clue as to what they are. And how to I delete things off there? I couldn't find out how to do that. |

Solve : Audio Books? |
Answer» I have a Desktop & a Laptop, but no iPhone or any other type of device that I could download audiobooks with. My question is, is it possible to download audiobooks to my Desktop computer and then turn them into CDs so that I can listen to them through the CD player in my car? I frequently have a 3-hour trip to drive that is, at times, through the mountains so I lose radio signals and those audiobooks really are great when I can't get radio news or music. Or is this not legal even if it is possible? It is possible. Legality depends on what is being downloaded and converted. You can get MP3 players with cigarette lighter plug-in. The unit has a FM transmitter the sends a strong signal to a car radio in the standard FM band. He can simply burn them to CD's...Oops! Here are the specs for that car: Quote ...Notice that the Privacy Glass is right after the MP3 player. They can not tell who is playing such music! Very important option! You're goin off the deep end Geek...Thank you, Geek, however, I bought the base model LE with no extra Bells & Whistles other than what the base model provides, and compared to my 8-year-old Forester, it has a lot more as regards to the electronic stuff, but less on the comfort level. I do know that a cell phone can be paired up with the Blue Tooth system, however, not having a cell phone, that was a non-starter. From what I understood from the salesman, the higher end models of RAV4 do not have a CD player as they assume you have all your music on an iPhone and can play your music through that. I'm still reading the book trying to figure out what all the stuff is that can distract you from driving and can't imagine having more that higher end models provide. Do love the backup camera as it makes up for the narrow rear window that cuts down on rear visibility.Thank you, Patio. Burning them to CDs was my original thought, but I didn't know if it was possible. I certainly have a lot of CDs stashed away and it would make it a lot easier. Selling them would not be something I would do. I do respect the PATENT ownership of others. Wouldn't want it done to me were the shoe on the other foot. |

Solve : Removing this symbol from emails: |
Answer» When I receive an email with numerous address I delete them before passing the email on. And there are times when I get emails that have numerous <<< on every line. I used to painstakingly highlight and delete them before passing the email on, however, there has got to be a better way. Does anyone out there know how to do it by copying and pasting the email to a Word document? (I hope this is the right category for this question.) Thank youI used to have a app do that but I forget what it was but you may find a solution here.are the >>>>> characters in the body of other peoples replies? I've tried copying & pasting to another email, and to Word, but those symbols just get copied along with the text. You could use the Replace command in Word to Replace All < with [blank space] This is a more efficient way of removing the unwanted < . Thank You!!! That works like a charm. I've seen that but had no idea what "Replace" meant. You've made my day! |

Solve : Passwords You Must Never Use!? |
Answer» Believe it! Below are very common passwords. Do you use any? 123456Source: https://www.pocket-lint.com/laptops/news/140833-5-ways-to-ensure-your-passwords-are-always-safe He has very good ADVICE. But for one thing. He says "Don't write your passwords down". I disagree. You have too. And date them. Of course, put the paper in a very safe place. Not under your KEYBOARD. I use unique passwords for everything and keep them in a small notebook. Some I have remembered and others have to be looked up. One of my friends uses a short list of passwords and the passwords have a level to them of the most important and less frequently used to the the least risk and used in many places. Risk is based on how much damage someone could do if they had gained access to the password which all are phrases with numbers and special character. I don't like any passwords at all being the same between sites, as well as don't conform to a structure that can be guessed elsewhere. Example of a structure that can be guessed is like a color and a year to where say a password of Green2022 is compromised, a hacker can try Green2021 or Green2020 and so on to try to find a similar used password that just has a different year used to gain access to more. Other thing to note is security questions and their answers. I always use WRONG information and give answers to security questions that have nothing to do with the question to throw off anyone from using a dictionary attack of Cities, Colors, Animal Names, and so on and so if its a security question of What is your favorite musical instrument, the answer will be something like StirringPeanutButter32 which is written down in my little notebook that only I will ever have access to and no one in the world would be able to guess wrong answers that have nothing to do with questions and are abstract to avoid dictionary BRUTE forcing. |

Solve : Android is better than Windows. True?? |
Answer» Of course, this is about smart phones, not desktops. This isn't the best looking app in the world, but it's full of geek-level info and media from the NASA archive, along with news and updates on what's going on up there and back at base. Maybe one day they'll get a slick front end for it all, but for now this raggle-taggle collection of links, pictures, videos and news feeds has plenty to keep space cadets informed and entertained.Android as an OS is built over LINUX kernel so its far more secure than its corresponding mobile OS like Windows.. well i can't say the same with iPhone. Android has approx 85% smart phone market share. Below are the points what I think makes it No1 1. Open Source : So it got huge response from Developer community. If you have the backing of developer community then its similar to acquire 100 start ups. 2. JAVA : No doubt Java is most popular programming language. So it is self explanatory 3. Huge APP STORE : As a end user you need apps. For end users APP means one feature. So he is really excited to use free apps. 4. Low Cost : Android mobiles are cheap compared to IOS devices and Windows 5. Easy to Use : This is really the USP for Android.I seen this disk can install android in computer not SURE how well it work.I had no idea this thread would last as long as it has. Android 11? Really https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_11 Here is a you tube v video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dLfvcRVoG8 It is an poem source thing. Ha anybody here tried it? Please confess. Solve : Impressive 96k FPS from 2004 that I discovered kkrieger? |
Answer» I was surfing youtube last night looking for new stuff to check out for games and came across a project that I previously had not been aware of that back in 2004 a group of German programmers put together a first person shooter called kkrieger that had impressive graphics for only 96k in size. I was able to locate the game for download and while its not without some GLITCHES it RAN under Windows 10 64-bit on my Core i5 with GT 730 video card with ease since it was built to run on a Pentium III 1.5Ghz or better with Geforce 4 Ti or better back in 2004. Impressive in that its all that it is for 96k in size it was fun to play even though I got snagged when trying to walk off of a PLATFORM and all I could do was turn around 360 and SHOOT but unable to jump and get un-snagged during one of my many RUNS testing it out. |

Solve : Floppy Question? |
Answer» I have been given an old Dan computer that runs WIN 3.1. As well as the normal F/D drive it has a gianormous one for a few large, (about 5" and a bit diameter) F/D . These disks are really floppy, not in a rigid case like normal ones. I have been given an old Dan computer that runs WIN 3.1. As well as the normal F/D drive it has a gianormous one for a few large, (about 5" and a bit diameter) F/D . These disks are really floppy, not in a rigid case like normal ones. 5-1/4" floppy; 1982 (I think, whenever the original PC was released). Died a horrible death market wise when it was found that 3-1/2" floppies could STORE a lot more and were far less fragile. Basically, they were in common use until around 1993-1995 when new computers started coming without them. Thanks for that. Curiosity satisfied! I suppose in years to come SOMEONE will ask a similar question about 3.1/2" floppies. I don't know when the computer was made, other than quite a while ago.Quote from: pantherman on August 09, 2010, 12:54:45 PM Thanks for that. Curiosity satisfied! I suppose in years to come someone will ask a similar question about 3.1/2" floppies.Win3.1 dates it no later than 1995 (when Win95 was released); computer could be late 80's. 3.5in FDD showed up on Macintosh before PC's. 5-1/4" was in use on PC's until about 1990.Quote from: pantherman on August 09, 2010, 12:54:45 PM Thanks for that. Curiosity satisfied! I suppose in years to come someone will ask a similar question about 3.1/2" floppies.Actually, that time is pretty much now- new computers don't come with floppy drives anymore, and a lot of PEOPLE don't know what they are at all. There has been a shift in how actions are "iconized"... as I'm sure you've noticed, most programs represent the "save" function with a floppy disk. Since most people don't know what it is, it's not really a good metaphor anymore. the "new" way to depict the save function is usually a folder with an arrow pointing into it. It's a bit CLUMSY but easier to relate too. Quote from: Computer_Commando on August 09, 2010, 01:28:49 PM Win3.1 dates it no later than 1995 (when Win95 was released); No it doesn't. they still sold many PCs with windows 3.1 after windows 95 was released, well into 1997 (usually as options when you purchased the machine. The fact that it has a 5-1/4" floppy dates it pretty much right in the middle of windows 3.1's "epoch". Pantherman: if you're truly curious, you might be able to get some information on the machine by running "MSD" at a DOS prompt, assuming that it starts. (some of the information may be wrong, since it commonly labelled anything beyond a 486 as a 486, but it can give a good idea about the age of the machine, specifically the BIOS date. (which you could of course read from the boot screen.)Thanks again I will give it a try.Check out this article. Everything you could possibly want to know about floppies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floppy_disks http://www.examiner.com/x-16352-Japan-Headlines-Examiner~y2010m4d24-Sony-to-discontinue-35-inch-floppy-disk-in-Japan That may be an interesting read. Apparently, as of 2009, 8.5 million disks are still being used in Japan. Thanks for all the info and links. Being an inquisitive (ie, nosey!) chap I did the MSD thing and found far more than I understood! Main bit for me was, "BIOS Date 05/05/91" Also found "ROM BIOS (C) 1990 American Megatrends INC PD 386 V2.0 09-10-91" One of the links mentions an 8" F/D and I thought my 5" was a big one! Just to add, when this machine starts up I have to reset the CMOS (Nope, I don't know anything about it, just enter the figures I was given) because the battery is low. Tried leaving it plugged in for 3 days, but it has not charged and I can't see the normal circular battery on the mother board to change, so guess it is a solder on type. After this it starts up with, "Supermemory C:\BATCH" No doubt a dim question to the knowledgeable, but what is "BATCH" and "Supermemory" please? I enter WIN at that to start as normal with WIN 3.1. Quote from: pantherman on August 10, 2010, 08:38:04 AM Thanks for all the info and links. Being an inquisitive (ie, nosey!) chap I did the MSD thing and found far more than I understood!80386- those are quite old. MSD should also list the amount of RAM installed. (or you can see it when it counts it at the start, I suppose). I'd guess 2MB to 8MB. Quote Just to add, when this machine starts up I have to reset the CMOS (Nope, I don't know anything about it, just enter the figures I was given) because the battery is low. Tried leaving it plugged in for 3 days, but it has not charged and I can't see the normal circular battery on the mother board to change, so guess it is a solder on type. It's also possible you have a Dallas Clock chip. The chip says "Dallas" and has a little picture of an alarm clock on it. (It's supposed to last about 10 years.). I don't know where you can get one. Also, CMOS batteries are never "charged" by the machine. At least, none that I've seen. Quote After this it starts up with, "Supermemory C:\BATCH" that's the prompt. somebody changed it. type prompt $P$G to get a more familiar C:\BATCH> prompt. "BATCH" in this instance is a subdirectory of C:, and one can logically assume that it contains Batch files which are executed by autoexec.bat. If you want to change it "permanently" look in autoexec.bat for a line something like this: Code: [Select]Prompt SuperMemory $P and change it to Prompt $P$G ($P for path, $G for greater sign)Quote from: pantherman on August 10, 2010, 08:38:04 AM One of the links mentions an 8" F/D and I thought my 5" was a big one! Several years ago I had to use 8" floppies on an old phone/PBX system. The whole system should have been replaced years earlier, but for budget reasons wasn't. Every time power went out I had to reboot the system off of the 8" floppies. Luckily, I only had to put up with that system for about a year until we got a new phone system. Thanks again. "Also, CMOS batteries are never "charged" by the machine. At least, none that I've seen." That's a learning curve then as the person who gave me the computer said it did. But I would rather accept what you have said. Off to try it now. Quote from: pantherman on August 10, 2010, 12:36:04 PM Thanks again. Since No CMOS battery setup I've ever seen (from the little cigar *censored* battery in my 286 to the Dallas chip I saw in one 386 as well as the more conventional CR2032 batteries) has ever supplied power to the CMOS circuit, It seems impossible for them to be charged when no power is being supplied . When the Power is on, the CMOS circuit is broken and the RTC RAM is kept alive via power from the power supply. As I'm sure we've all witnessed with standard batteries of any form, sometimes a short while of disuse can seem to restore a little life to them, that's pretty much all that happens. For example, my 286 that I had was nearly 17 years old when I first went to power it on. It was probably off and unused for a good 8-10 years. Of course, the battery was "dead" as far as the machine was concerned. but for that short while I had it on, the battery wasn't being used for the NVRAM circuit, so it sort of gained a little charge. enough to hold data for about a day or two, but no longer. Eventually this residual ability to keep the data intact disintegrated and the battery was essentially dead. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 10, 2010, 12:49:12 PM ...It seems impossible for them to be charged when no power is being supplied. As I'm sure we've all witnessed with standard batteries of any form, sometimes a short while of disuse can seem to restore a little life to them, that's pretty much all that happens....There were a very few computers that used large value capacitors in place of batteries. They were charged when the computer was on. They are making a resurgence due to advanced battery technology, and are called: polyacene batteries. They look just like coin cells. http://www.goldmine-elec-products.com/prodinfo.asp?number=G13133 The REASON batteries appear to return to life. Even removing the load, the battery chemistry continues, the voltage increases, but the total capacity is still degraded. Reapply the load and the battery appears good for a short time. What you have written makes sense of what the previous owner told me. I think the battery must have recovered a little and he thought it was charging. |

If someone was pirating your wireless signal you wouldn’t be able to view what they’d browsed without seeing their computer directly or accessing the settings for your router. |

Solve : viruses in a virtual machine ?? |
Answer» Is it possible to get viruses in a Windows installation on a virtual PC ? Is it possible to get viruses in a Windows installation on a virtual PC ? Of COURSE. Why wouldn't it? Kind of a silly question, when you CONSIDER that a "virtual PC" is an emulated PC. what runs on a normal PC can run on a emulated PC and therefore so too can viruses and malware. Quote If so, can those viruses spread to the physical computer and base windows installation ?Depends on the setup. if your sharing folders/files between the guest and host OS or have active Network connections between then it is possible for worms and malware to infect files on the shared folder and or permeate through the network connection (the later is rather rare these days, since most malware seems to be of the more brainless "trojan horse" varieties, which rely in the user essentially to distribute them).thx for the response.. I figured VMs can have viruses. I just wanted ANOTHER VIEW point to be sure. |

Solve : ram & cache memory? |
Answer» how to convert a part of non volatile memory to volatile memory ??What exactly do you WANT to do and for what purpose? Do you want to create a ram drive? You can't convert non-volatile memory to volatile. They are different types of memory technology. The ONE exception (i believe) is cmos ram. Your bios settings are stored in volatile memory (cmos ram), and the only thing that makes it SOMEWHAT non-volatile is the cmos battery on the motherboard. Non-volatile memory does not require a constant voltage to retain data, where volatile memory does. This is why when your computer crashes you loose all your unsaved data. All that stuff you're typing is done in main DRAM memory which is volatile and requires constant power. When your computer crashes and you have to restart you loose all that unsaved data because power is temporarily disconnected from main memory. If you want the data to be saved you save it to the hard drive, either "my documents" or the "desktop".. |

Solve : how much is this worth?? |
Answer» I have a Pc that i want to sell and i dont know how much its worth I hate to say it, but that 200w power supply is a big red flag. Are you sure it's 200w? I've seen several 250w power supplies (which most people consider underpowered) ,but never a 200w. yeah its a 200w its originally from a Hp PAVILION 750n.Quote from: BluerjB on August 19, 2010, 11:42:46 PM yeah its a 200w its originally from a Hp pavilion 750n. Never mind I looked at the spec's and its actually a 185W which is even worse. I have a 300W but when i plug any hard drives on it emits a LOUD PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!! NOISE that gets really aggravating£30 or so? As for the PSU, OEMs usually supply prebuilt machines with the bare minimum. Dell PSUs tend to be very good and actually udnerrated, so a 200W Dell can reliably provide more power than it's rated to, but other OEMs tend to use very low quality units. I'm guessing this is an OEM machine by the specs. |

Quote from: Salmon Trout on August 22, 2010, 12:10:33 AM You get an RDC client but not the server. That makes sense. If that's the case, I wonder why I can't get terminal services started in XP home edition. Doesn't it have to be running to accept a remote connection from server ? In any case, I never downloaded or installed it at any time that I can remember. It's wierd that it just showed up on both of my computers.. I got server and client mixed up, sorry... But ANYWAY, I just don't know how they got there, I never saw them before... |

Solve : you tube download speed? |
Answer» The you tube videos keep stopping to reload. What could be the problem? I thought my computer was okay and although this has always happened occasionally it seems like now it is much more often. Could someone list the known causes please. My computer is a core 2 duo with plenty of ram and speed. I have DSL and I put on a new filter on the phone to keep the analog signal out and I put on a new DSL cable in case the connection was bad. It seems like it doesn't matter if I'm downloading any videos or not it still keeps reloading. Strangely though occasionally a video will START right up and play at least most of the way through. I don't think I have a lot of THINGS running during the you tube watching because I have used WINDOWS Defender to limit these programs to only the necessary. And I have AVG running but not in conflict with any other MALWARE monitoring utilities. It's evening now and I know it is said the problem could be with how much traffic my server is under at the MOMENT but are there any other possible sources of the problem? Thanks! |

Solve : Youtube won't load, files don't download? |
Answer» Hi I've been having this problem with my computer for about over a month now. It just came out of nowhere. Basically, if I try and OPEN youtube, the video either loads about six seconds, and then buffers until eternity, or just doesn't load at all. This occurs in IE, Mozilla, and Chrome. I have already cleared my cache, unin and reinstalled flash like a billion times, and run numerous VIRUS checks. Everyone else that has the same internet provider as me isn't having this problem. It's just me, so I figure it's the computer. This is the same issue that happens with any video I try to load. Also, I can't download any music files. At all. It kinda does the same thing as the youtube vids. Either a bit will download, then stop, or it won't download at all. Any other files (i.e. documents, pictures) download just fine. I'm running XP, and I haven't had any problems like this before. I'd really APPRECIATE any help, because I'm dying without youtube. What anti virus program/s are you running ? |

Solve : mosque at twin towers neighborhood? |
Answer» What do you think? Should this be built? Actually the mosque is inside a Moslem community center and it's TWO blocks from the site and in NYC a block is EQUAL to 4 or 5 small town blocks. I feel they are making a statement about their victory by building it there and even if the developers don't feel it's a statement many Muslims will. And if like some of them say " We love America" if that were true they would not want to build the community center with mosque inside. Religious FREEDOM is not the issue here. And it isn't a local NYC thing. They attacked the whole country. They have a warlike stance and are trying to HIDE that truth with irrational illogical statements. This should be grounds for stopping the construction by what ever means is necessary. We wouldn't be here if America's founding fathers meekly obeyed English law. How much of America are we going to give up? Any group at war with us should not be allowed to thrive. Isn't that basic common sense? No good can come of this debate you are trying to start.
