Answer» Hi all.
This may seem a bit strange but I was wondering if anyone could tell me the definitions of the terms found when buying motherboards, I found a few on the sites dictionary but just wanted to get a reply from someone else to make sure im not mistaken.
Also if possible could you please explain how they relate to the motherboard itself.
Anyway here they are:
S775, P35, FSB1333, DDR2, PCIEx16, SATA2, RAID, GbLAN, 1394a, ATX, DES, SATA, 2xPCIE2.0, Dual DDR3-1900, Dual PCI E x16, SATAII RAID, PATA, GbE LAN,1394, 8Ch DTS, UDES.
I found or already knew most of them but just wanted the terminology of them.
Also kinda wondering what the actual names of motherboards mean such as:
GA-X48-DS4 or GA-X48T-DQ6, more wondering about the X48/DS4 if they mean anything or its just the actual name of the motherboard and no other meaning.
Thx again, I know its a really newbie question but I do wish to know what it all means when I buy a motherboard and what not. S775 - the CPU socket, You must buy a CPU that sues this socket. 775 is the newest mainstream Intel socket, so new Intel chips will work in that board. P35 - that's the chipset, which controls most of the functions of the board. P35 is a fairly new mainstream/performance chipset, I have a P35 board myself and it's very good. FSB1333 - the maximum FSB speed the board officially supports. DDR2 - the board supports DDR" RAM, which is the most common type around now. PCIEX16 - it has a PCI-Express X16 slot, which means modern graphics cards can be added. SATA2 - that's a socket for modern hard drives, CD drives etc. RAID - a way of using multiple hard drives together. GbLAN - a LAN (ETHERNET) connection that can work at up to 1Gb/sec. 1394a - this means the board has Firewire connectivity. ATX - the form factor. This is the most widely used today and will fit in most cases. DES - Dynamic Energy Saver, a feature that can help the board to use less power. More of a gimmick IMHO, jumping on the energy bandwagon. 2XPCIE2.0 - I would THINK that this means the board has two PCI-Express sockets, these could be any standard without further info. Dual DDR3-1900 - two sockets for the newer, very expensive DDR3 RAM, up to 1900MHz. PATA - a standard for older hard drives, CD drives etc. 8Ch DTS - onboard sound. UDES - part of the sound specs.
Motherboard names are specific to the manufacturers. the two you name are Guigabyte boards - GA for Gigabyte, X48 for the chipset. DQ6 is the high end motherboard, DS4 is slightly lower end. The T indicates only DDR3 support.
These terms on their own won't help MUCH. If you're looking for advice on what board to buy, give us a budget and what you want to sue it for and we can help you out.
By the way, welcome aboard!Ah thanks so much for the info, pretty much what I knew or found but yours is more detailed ;p
Yeah I was just building a PC for myself and honestly the terms were getting to me
Again thanks so much
And thanks for the welcoming You're welcome. Any more info you need, just ask.
