Answer» Today, I aquired an icon on my taskbar that keeps reminding me that I need spyware protection. I wouldn't have thought much about it, but when I click the bubble, it sends me to virusprotect pro website. I don't know what you CALL that, but I'm certain they have placed this icon on my computer. I have downloaded adware and avgspyware to try to GET rid of it, but neither of them DETECT it as a threat. What do I do? Can anybody help me with this? I use Windows xp, I think, if that helps any.Update your adaware and avg spyware programs. Boot into Safe Mode and run full system scans. Let the programs DELETE and/or quarantine what they find. Reboot into Windows normally and run the scans again. Before purchasing, do some research on this. There were some issues with Win98 and exceeding 512 meg of ram.

Either google for it and read, or ask right here in these forums. Somebody else will know the details - it has been a while for me, so I too would have to go back and see what I could find to read.

Win98, right?

Click on: Start->Settings->Control Panel->System
That brings up System Properties.
( Shortcut keys to get to same place - hold down the Windows Key and tap pause-break one time)

Four tabs at the top. Use the General tab.
Last line on that screen will be the amount of ram that Windows sees.
There are ways that this might be less than the amount physically installed.
More on that, if and when you need it.

We had fun times, ate some marshmallows, took lots of fun pictures, all of the normal things that people do while stuck in the wilderness with unspeakable numbers of hungry insects and far too much caffeine. Unfortunately my problem lays with the pictures aforementioned. While we were boating, my friend's little sister splashed water on my camera and absolutely soaked it through the protective case. In RETROSPECT, it probably was not the most brilliant plan to bring an electronic ONTO a little vessel floating on a lake, but again, it did have a case and it was far from the EDGES and so I took the chance. Not panicking, I patted the water off as best as was possible at the time and did not turn it on until I was completely sure that it was dry, because I have heard that trying to power an electronic while wet will kill any chance it has of living again. Fast-forward. The next day, I look my camera over thoroughly, see it as fit to try, and with a glimmer of hope turn it on. Nothing. Blank. Again, I shrug it off; I had bought a package of new batteries the previous morning, but they were faulty and chose not to work the camera even before it had been wet. We continue taking pictures with my friend's camera, no big deal. This morning, I replaced the batteries with those of my XBOX360 controller. Still, blackness. I have not tested this set out, so it is quite possible that the things are dead, but such an occurrence is far too coincidental and I am preparing for the worst: my camera's demise. Here is where you come in, my dear readers! I do not plan on getting a new camera for a while yet due to monetary insufficiency, and even then, this one has so far not satisfied me and my next choice will be a Canon or Kodak. My current model is a Fujifilm FinepixA345, does anybody have a clue how I can still transfer the images from my memory card onto my laptop, or are they lost forever? 4709.	Solve : Toshiba Laptop Shutoff?
Answer» I just bought a new Toshiba laptop and there are three options for shuting the computer down. Which should I use (Sleep, Hibernate, Shut Down)? I ASK this because my friend told me that using shut down is hard on a laptop...is this true? I use it during classes so I'd say I use the computer every couple of hours or so. Any suggetions would be great! Also, when I have used hibernate, the computer has had errors that KEPT it from booting up again...had to go to safe mode. THANKSWell, if Hibernate is causing you problems, I would go ahead and start another topic about how to fix it. Hibernate is extremely useful. It saves everything that is opened to the hard disk, and then resumes by loading it back up again. Its the equivelent of shutting down your computer. Shutting down your computer is not hard on your computer at all. (Unless you press and hold the power button for 5 seconds, causing an instant shut down. You may loose data from doing this) Sleep leaves your computer on, but puts it into a lower power mode. This makes it so that the computer can instantly start up again. This turns the monitor, hard drive, and all devices inside the computer off, or into a low power state. This is great for when switching in between classes, or when you are going to be leaving your computer for a certain period of time, but will be coming back to it SOON. No matter what option you choose, you should always save your data first, in case the worst HAPPENS and a PROGRAM crashes, before powering down or powering off you computer.

Answer» background.... i had music stored on my buddy's computer, we went to Iraq for a year, computer was in storage, we get back and can't get computer to work. He lets me borrow it to bring home to try and retrive my files, and I mail it to him whereever when done... the problem... I turn it on and the screen is just black with a WARNING message saying PC ENTERING POWER SAVE MODE with RED GREEN BLUE (in colors) under it. The message sorta floats north-west a couple clicks then the screen shuts off. I can press buttons on the monitor to make it do that again, but thats it. specs I know... what is written on the computer is "Designed for windows XP", so I can only assume thats the operating system on it. written on it also is HP Pavillion a320n. The monitor SAYS "HP Pavillion f1503" This is all I know. Am I just f'd? If you can email a fix, I'd appreciate it... I'll check on here as well if no emails float my way. Thanks allOk 2 things , i would clean out all the dust from the cpu then try it... If it doesnt work then i think you may need to invest in a new power supply unit ....... IVE had the same error message before but my motherboard fryed but i dont want to speclate that....I got rid of your email address, or you'd have got a lot of spam. Other than that, clean out your PC and check the connections.OK, sorry about the email and thanks for editing it. I'll clean it out best as I can and give that a try this weekend. Also a power supply unit, I'll look into that as well. If there are any other tips, I'll take em. I'll reply again with my results. PATIO is 100% right if all else fails.... Remove and reseat memory modules and add in cards. If necessary, use a pencil ERASER to clean the contacts. Be sure to use ESD precautions when handlind, and be sure all power is removed.

4713.	Solve : Computer comes on and then shuts down.?
Answer» Hello: (First time USER of Forum) When I start my COMPUTER it comes on and then shuts off after a second or two. I have checked all cards and HD's even checked my new power supply. Originally when this problem started I was playing a game. The game SHUT off and windows logged off and shut down. I restarted and computer came up on Bios screen. Memory and everything was reporting correctly so I set it default. Computer started and I continued playing that night. I shut it down and the next day it started in Bios again. Set it to default again and used it all day. Next day I turned the system on and it started to boot. It got past HD detection and then just shut off. That is when I started checking everything. Cards were removed and replaced, memory was also removed. Plugged another power supply in with same results. After trying everything I unplugged the 12v from the Processor. System started. My conclusion at that time was bad processor. Removed P4 processor and returned it to Intel. It was replaced with a new one. Problem SOLVED right? Wrong!! Installed new processor and powered up system. It came on for a few seconds and shut off. This was yesterday. While off it would keep comming on and off. Had to switch off from the switch in the back of the computer. Cleared bios again. System started got past HD detection and then shut down. Still comming on and off. Unplugged the front power button thinking it may be bad. System started and booted up with no problem. Power switch right? Wrong!! Last night I used computer all night with no PROBLEMS. Internet games etc. even did a virus spyware scan. This morning I powered the system up and it came on for about 2 seconds and then shut off. I doesn't come on and off like it did but it just won't stay on. I am out of ideas. Anyone know how to fix this problem? Don't write anything to that drive. The more you do, the less chance you have of recovering anything. Then go ahead and give Recuva a try. It's a bit easier to use, and it's usually fairly successful.

I am wanting to start selling on EBAY, & I have a difficult time understanding some photo technical issues concerning files, and some others. I have gone through the Ebay site, and I am still having a hard time understanding how to tackle these problems. #1) If I only given the KB of a file and need to size this into the "width and height", how can this be done.(make this easy to understand, if POSSIBLE) #2) When I get a message that says that the photo file is too large, how to I go about making it smaller. I use an image editor;however,the editor almost always wants the width and height. I play around with making it smaller;however, it still comes out looking either too small, or not big enough. #3) I have a problem with resolution if the photo has to be enlarged too much, and if I take it too close, it comes out blurry. I bought a small tripod, so that should help to keep the photo from getting a fuzzy, blur like picture from movement . Make this as easy to understand, as though you were talking to a small kid. Assuming you are still RUNNING XP go here and download ImageResizer.exe. Once installed all you have to do is Right click on an image then L.click on Resize to SEE the various options for resizing the original and saving the resized image. Note that provided you choose Save As in the File dropdown menu your original image will not be reduced, if you choose Save then the original will be overwritten with the new resized image. Answer» Hey everyone, My Nanny likes to downloads things from the innernet onto my computer. I like her to use the computer but the pop-ups are all over the place. She uses instant messaging alot and I don't know what else. Is there some way people can use the computer but that I can prevent any downloads? I would prefer she didn't know I was implementing the "PARENTAL controls" on her. When she used it LAST my BROWSER had been changed to another one. It's very annoying. (assuming you're using windows) have your nanny just use the guest account and install only the things that your nanny uses like the instant messaging and whatever browser she likes and whatever other software she likes to use most often. and she can still download and do everything but she can't install any software or hardware or change any settings that you personally like. Parental Controls ---> I wouldn't know how much it would take for her to find out that parental controls is being implemented even on the guest account mode. It sounds like your getting nasties put on that she doesnt realize, I would scan the pc if you dont already. Probably will find a few trojans or something.

Maybe you should think of ditching the burner. If you have burned e.g. several hundred disks the burn laser could be weak. You could have bought a number of DL burners with that money.

Keep in mind this is a cap only on incomplete (half-open) outbound connect attempts per second, not total connections. Still, running servers and P2P programs is definitely affected by this new limitation. In addition, even though the setting was registry editable in XP SP1, it is now only possible to edit by changing it directly in the system file tcpip.sys. To make matters worse, that file is in use, so you also need to be in Safe mode in order to edit it. 2. Recently, I switched from BitLord to uTorrent, which increased somewhat, but...after applying the above patch....
Before, I was pretty happy with torrent speed getting close to 100kB/s. After patch, with GOOD number of seeders, I'm getting speed up to 400kB/s!.

If you use uTorrent, after applying the above patch, you have to go Options>Preferences>Advanced, and set net.max_halfopen value to 50-100. I did set mine to 80.

And I think I read somewhere that windows reserves some of your bandwidth so that it will be prioritized for the windows update downloads and therefore you do not get 100% of your bandwidth for all the non-windows update internet usage?Not correct. What Windows might do is reserve some of your bandwidth for QoS packages.

QoS packages may be used on a network to GIVE preference to certain kinds of network traffic. For example VOIP traffic could take preference over downloads to make sure downloading something doesn't disrupt a IP phone call. QoS traffic may reserve up to 20% of your network bandwidth. But as explained here it is only reserved when a program supporting QoS is actually sending something.

Rant: The forward thinking of Microsoft developers here is that you can only infect 10 new systems per second via TCP/IP ?!?... If you also consider that each of those infected computers will infect 10 others at the same rate:

second 2: 10+10*10 computers (110 new ones)
second 3: 10+100*10 computers ( 1110 new ones)
second 4: 10+1000*10 computers (11110 new ones)
....
all the way to 10*60 + 10^60 computers in a single minute (that's a number with 60 digits, or it would far exceed Earth's population). Even if we consider that 90% of those computers are unreachable/protected, one would still reach ALL of them WITHIN a minute.

In other WORDS, even though it is not going to stop worm spreading, it's going to delay it a few seconds, limit possible network congestion a bit, and limit the use of your PC to 10 connection attempts per second in the process !

4744.	Solve : Images being superimposed on WMP and videos in firefox?

It is a video trailer, and the photobucket page on the opposite tab got superimposed onto it when I switched tabs.) So basically, the screen GETS whatever was behind it superimposed onto it. If I OPEN up a game or some other program where it comes to the forefront of the screen and you must alt-tab out of it, the image there will be imposed where the videos are. (AKA, if the right side of my screen had a monkey and WMP was on the right side, a monkey would be superimposed on the WMP screen, and would stay there even as the video continues to PLAY.) As you can see, this affects videos playing in firefox as well. This bug only being to happen when a resource heavy program, such as most games, is used. For some reason it does not affect youtube videos. WMP must be closed and restarted in order to function PROPERLY. A complete computer restart is needed for firefox videos affected. I have updated my drivers but the issue persists. Any thoughts?Try updating the video codecs you use.

Answer» COULD anyone help me solve my recent dilemna? When I compose & send an email on my laptop at home (hotmail ACCT), the email is somehow routed to my business email acct at my office. I don't send it there! CHECK your Hotmail settings. Look for COPY forwarding. You must have SET this up.

Answer» As of the last month I have had DIFFICULTY with watching videos like on Youtube or other places. I've found that it is buffered ahead of the point I am watching but PAUSES for a bit. For example; A program which notifies you of a new email on an email account of your choice, POSSIBLY multiple accounts.
