Solve : 2nd processor not shown in task manager? |
Answer» I recently purchased an Alienware 3.06 gz laptop - it runs about an hour with 2 batteries. ...It shows a BIOS version dated 1992 - way to early for the one I am running. Did you ask Alienware? http://www.alienware.com/ Maybe SETI has invading your pc..........Thanks for the support: That Craig list laptop is the one (and it needs a new keyboard) I have but does it use power, have to hit it with a vacuum cleaner every month else it will overheat - the fan runs constantly. I did flash the BIOS with the latest from Alienware so I could get Service Pack 2. I'd BSOD everytime with old BIOS. I searched forums at Alienware but nothing. Their tech support LEAVES a lot to be desired. I will prolly have to reinstall windows - maybe windows will catch their error this time but was trying to avoid that. Or, running SETI on an Alienware - maybe I found one. Thanks all lou |

Solve : "missing or corrupt hal.dll"? |
Answer» So, I asked about this file two days ago, but I never actually touched it. Last night everything was lovely in my local computing sphere. This morning a message on boot-up that says "Windows COULD not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: hal.dll. Please reinstall a copy of the file." Dell does not send you a CD for your o/s, which in this case is XP MEDIA Center Edition. They want me to pay $100 to peak to someone on the phone. Is there any way I can avoid this scurrilous charge? Help! ...Dell does not send you a CD for your o/s, which in this case is XP Media Center Edition. They want me to pay $100 to peak to someone on the phone. Is there any way I can avoid this scurrilous charge? Help! Welcome to "Dell *censored*". Is this a new Dell policy? Have you had it less than 30 days? If yes, send the whole thing back. Call the toll free number and demand to SPEAK to a supervisor. Pay no extra for anything. You've got a warranty. File a complaint with the US Federal Trade Commission. They are obligated to provide the CD's at no charge, since you already paid for them. I don't know what you said, Merlin, but it's cute. Commando, I may do just that. My only hesitation involves my entire music library, which is ensconsed neatly on the c: drive.Thats dell..........does not build pc/s............buys the componnents.............soon will be msoft! So Dell is a basically a marketing firm? I've heard that Toshiba never even lays eyes, let alone hands, on it's machines. In fact, UPS build, reairs, maintains and moves all their product. I just want mine to work.Slave trade............amtrad did the same thing! get rich from the poor...........still happening after millions of years.............why! Quote No I don't [have a system recovery disc]... The easiest way to restore the HAL is to reinstall Windows with the system recovery disc that came with the computer. Every person who has asked me to reinstall Windows on her Dell has given me a recovery disc that came with her PC. Did you lose yours? I have pored over everything that came with the computer and I find no recovery disc. Maybe they just slipped up with my computer. |

Answer» I get a message that the CTL3.DLL file cannot be located and consequently the OPLIMIT/OCRAWARE.EXE file cannot be run. The 27KB CTL2 file is in the C:\windows\TEMP folder. The graphics on the computer have slowed down cosiderably since then. My OS is 98 2nd edition and the only significant change is that I downloaded Firefox as a browser to replace IE for I have heard/read that is more efficient. Thanks for your assistance Quote I downloaded Firefox as a browser to replace IE for I have heard/read that is more efficient. Wise choice! Widely known and persistant Hijacker.I looked at the TEMP folder and there is a ton of stuff in there. Will emptying this folder result in dire consequces? like locusts or soccer becoming the national sport? Quote I looked at the TEMP folder and there is a ton of stuff in there. Will emptying this folder result in dire consequces? Dire results as in George Bush becoming president for a second and third run? No. The temporary files are created by programs to.. temporary store files. However, for some reason, it is left to the user to remove them. You can safely remove them. Some may refused to be removed as they are currently in use. BEST to do so from safe mode. You can also empty the C:\windows\prefetch folder without any consequences should you ever wonder. (Assuming this is present in Pre-Windows XP)Walter: CTL3D.DLL is a Windows file used to produce 3D EFFECTS for Windows applications: http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/dlllibrary/ctl3d/ Replacing the file should speed up your graphics. Windows 98 will replace it for you if you run the System File Checker: 1. Boot your computer to the Windows 98 desktop and put in the Windows 98 CD. 2. Click Start, then Run, and type SFC in the Run dialog box and press Enter. 3. Have the System File Checker scan your computer. When if finds that CTL3D.DLL is missing or corrupt and asks if you want to replace it from the CD, click Yes. That should do it! Doc Quote Dire results as in George Bush becoming president for a second and third run? LOL Nope, U.S. Presidents are have been limited to two terms after F.D.R. passed away in his third term and Congress passed a law. However, if you add the terms of GB Sr. and GB Jr. there are three. Then there is always Jr.'s brother who is Governor of Florida. Two more years to come? I haven't quite been keeping up to date with any sort of politics, but isn't Arnold the governator ( ) of Florida? One President per State would be a better idea. Then you can dismantle big government. Why does Alan Greenspan want another 80 billion immigrants, anyone know? |

Solve : Booking multiple attendee times for one agenda? |
Answer» We are a company that uses Outlook 2002. When scheduling INTERVIEWS for candidates, we NEED to book them for several hiring managers, thus multiple people's times. We can send a meeting request, but it would be time-consuming to do a meeting request to each interviewer for one candidate. We COULD send one meeting request but that would BLOCK all interviewers' calendars for the entire day versus their individual time. |

Solve : XP requirement? |
Answer» i have a computer with windows 98 and i want to PUT Windows XP on it and i met some of the requirments and others i didnt becausei done have enough free space on my disc drive am i able to earase the whole ocmputer then put it on there?Do you have the full XP install disk or the upgrade disk?full install i dont think it will work cuz my computer has 64mb ram and they say min. is 128 Dont try and run windows XP under 256MB of Ram and even then that is pushing it to run XP, with 512 MB everthing works FINE with that Ram anything under it makes for HARD going, You need at LEAST a 10GB hard drive.128MB RAM is enough, but it will not go very fast. You will need at least 7GB of space for Windows XP with SP2. Approximately 3 to 4GB with SP1. If your computer was designed for Windows 98 only you can safely assume Windows XP will not install. Quote ...Dont try and run windows XP under 256MB of Ram and even then that is pushing it to run XP, with 512 MB everthing works fine with that Ram anything under it makes for hard going, You need at least a 10GB hard drive... I actually did some testing of my own. WinXP-SP2 actually booted and ran (very slowly) on a P3-500 w/ 64MB RAM. Hard drive ran continuously. With 384MB on the same computer with P3-700, it's fast enough for anything but gaming. On a different P3-500 w/160MB RAM it ran faster than with Win2k. Hard drive partition size on all was about 5GB. I use a COMPAQ Deskpro with 500Mhz Intel Pentium III and 384MB RAM. Went from 128 to 256 to 384. The HDD is indeed accessed more often when you have so little RAM. Plus, when multi-tasking, the computer had a tendency to become unstable or even crash with only 128MB RAM. |

Solve : How many hours does it take on average to....? |
Answer» Clean a system with adware, malware, and a few low level viruses, and restore Internet Explorer functionality. 1. Clean a system with adware, malware, and a few low level viruses, and restore Internet Explorer functionality. 1. Heavily depends on how stubborn the viruses are and if I can get my hands on the proper software. An hour or two if the user-abuse was heavy and the baddies plenty. 2. At least an hour. Also depending on the OS being installed and the speed of the COMPUTER. 3. Never done the latter, but installing the software takes less than a minute. I doubt that connecting it, given that you have the right information, takes more than 5 minutes. Thanks for the input. I find that to Install Windows 2000, all service packs and updates takes almost 3-4 hours. Is this common? If you download them from Microsoft, yes. Microsoft seems to only give me 33kb/s and occasionally, after CERTAIN updates have been installed, it will suddenly go with <1 Mbps. Quote Thanks for the input. Not if the latest service packs has been slipstreamed with the original CD and a new CD produced. Restoring is easier if you have a good drive image to restore with. |

Solve : Windows xp system requirements question!? |
Answer» HI, I want to know if this is enough for windows xp system requirewments: Pentium 3 500 MHZ 128 mb ram. 2 mb video card and Microsoft windows me. About the video card, I know it has to to be 8 mb at least. But I want to know if windows xp stiil run with that video card. I dont want to download any movies or WATCH it.Well... As long as your video card has at least 8 MB on it, you are fine. Here are the requirements... http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/evaluation/sysreqs.mspx ... Just make sure that you have enough memory on the card. EVERYTHING else checks-out [glb]Flame[/glb]Windows XP will install and pass the compatability test. However, you may wish to add more RAM.Hi With only 128MB you will find thats not enough to run other programs you should have at lest 256MB and 500MHz is just enough I think Microsft say 800MHzNyim: The only other thing you may want to do before installing XP is to check the Hardware Compatibility List (now called the Windows Catalog): http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314062 DocTake the XP Compatability test at PC Pitstop. Personally, I wouldn't put XP on such a low specification computer. Solve : Need help with Retrieving deleted files? |
Answer» I have Windows 98-second edition. I accidentally deleted some files that I had, files that I wanted to keep. The files were quite large so instead of going in the recycling bin they’re gone, I want to get them back, but I can’t find were they went. Is there any way I can RETRIEVE those files? I have Windows 98-second edition. I accidentally deleted some files that I had, files that I wanted to keep. The files were quite large so instead of going in the recycling bin they’re gone, I want to get them back, but I can’t find were they went. Is there any way I can retrieve those files? There are certain tools that can do so. I suggest that you read the following article to gain a better understanding of what actually happens to removed files in Windows operating systems. When you delete files from your computer and after you empty it out of the Recycle Bin, where exactly does it go? I can not think of software that would be able to regain your removed files. Merlin once posted an easy to use tool, maybe he will do so again. Thanks for the article Raptor I tried the program recover4all, unfortunately it can't find the files that I'm looking for. I'm looking for MP3S that I accidentally deleted if that helps?I accidentally deleted some files that I had, files that I wanted to keep: jessesen Did you load them onto disk! how did you do what you said you did! This will be interesting! Please note that files which are deleted via the Recycle bin are renamed so you won't find the original name anywhere. Have a look at the freeeeebie prog "Restore". It has worked wonders for me and it will recover the remains of deleted files which have been partially overwritten during the normal use of your pc. Good luckWhere would I find this freeeeebie prog "Restore"? I've looked and can't find it.so what files where these!jessesen - Restore is here http://www.snapfiles.com/get/restoration.html Also a good read here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;136517#top Regards D... Thank you! That program worked great, I was able to get all my LOST files back. Jessesen - thanks for coming back. Glad you like the little prog, it's the best one I have tried after getting used to the renaming shambles M'soft imposes on us. I should give it a try as well. Thank you for the link, Dusty.Raptor - At your level of knowledge it's probably a bit too basic - I would appreciate your opinion thoughI, even though I work a lot with computers, do not have the magic ability to retrieve files. It does seem to work for the C: partition on this computer and lists at least 50.000 files (Most of them are temporary) but when I remove a file from D: partition (Both NTFS) it says no files found immediatly when I press the search button. Is this because the program has been installed on that partition? It also works for my FAT32 partition..Raptor Not sure I can help with your prob as I don't have the prob at all, Restoration finds deleted files on both my C: and D: partitions (NTFS). Hate to ask but are you changing the partition letter (top RH of Restoration window)? Yes, also works on FAT32. I have TWO hdd (four partitions) on Win.98 pc (not the one I use on I'net) and it works on all four. Have never had to use Restoration in a SERIOUS situation, only "played" with it in case Regards.Yes, I am changing the partition letter. I will simply install it on C: disk soon and test it from there. The problem is that it does not scan from the partition it is installed on. Does it not do the same for you? |

Solve : CD: Playing music & Saving data on? |
Answer» Hi! I inherited a computer from my Dad after he passed away and gave my old one to Goodwill. It's been updated and I have no problems with software, etc. thanks to some guru friends. My Dad always did things first class and so it has a D and E drive. One is Read/Write I think and the other is Read only, although I really do not know which one I should use for music CDs. When I put a music CD in either drive it says: "A required .DLL file, MMVCP70.DLL was not found." When I try to save data to a CD (D or E drive) it says: "The selected drive disk is not in use. Check to make sure the disk is inserted." The disk is inserted. What am I doing wrong? I am FAIRLY computer savvy but this is out of my league. So what I think I've got so far is that the Hard disk is C:, D: & E: could be either cdrom or a cd writer. |

(You can use the standard Windows software if necessary) [glb]Flame[/glb]Yes, I do have a CD burner. What is the best software to use? Thank you again. --SARAHRefer to the PM [glb]Flame[/glb]Sarah: If you have Windows XP, CD burning software is included with the operating system. One question: What digital camera do you have? We have a Kodak and it SAVES copies of EVERY photo (we even have several copies of the same one) every time the camera is plugged in to our PC. These are besides the ones that are saved in the My Documents folder. The location of the folders with these image files is: C:\Documents and Settings\[USER name]\Local Settings\Temp Use Windows Explorer to check this folder when you are moving files from your hard drive, or let us know if you need help searching elsewhere on your computer for ALL of your digital photos. Regards, Doc Do you have CD burner software? If not something like NERO or Easy CD Creator, Roxio or Sonic? If you need a free CD burner then try DeepBurner and if you need a free Sound Recorder and Wave Editor try Audacity.CD burning software is only included with Windows XP so which operating system are you using? |
