I recently purchased an Alienware 3.06 gz laptop - it runs about an hour with 2 batteries.  

It was in bad shape software wise because OWNER had tried to upgrade without first flashing BIOS....To upgrade to SP2 I had to flash BIOS - no problem and new BIOS had hyper THREADING (previous BIOS did not) which had to be enabled to upgrade to to SP2.   Upgrades done.

I rejoined SETI and decided to take advantage of the dual prosessors.  2 CPUS are shown on Device manager but only one on task manager.  I would LIKE to be able to use both.

Another minor irritation...  Whenever I am referred from one site to another,  I am referred to the German version.   Win XP language is english and the location is in the US.   Beats me.

Since when can you see processors in the Task Manager?

Both are working properly in device manager.

I have another computer using hyperthreading - and when I open task manager its shows percentage USAGE of each processor. A seperate window for each.

I am still looking for a solution.

So, I asked about this file two days ago, but I never actually touched it. Last night everything was lovely in my local computing sphere. This morning a message on boot-up that says "Windows COULD not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: hal.dll. Please reinstall a copy of the file." No. I already read that article. Thank you though, Raptor. My biggest problem is a lack of any disks whatsoever for Windows, or a start-up disk. The computer isn't even two weeks old yet, and I haven't gotten AROUND to making one. Also, no floppy drive and when I try to format a cd-rw, it won't allow it. Hosed, I'm hosed.What if you do the following (If this even applies to Windows Media Center)

2. Select Last known good configuration

When i try a nd transcode avi files the computer resests itself after about five minutes. Have no idea why and have tryed three different programs to transcode with, all having the same problem? hardware fault? i think so. can anyone help? thanks! j

i'm running windows 98 and i've tried to clean up my computer. i ran a defrag but it said that there were errors so i had to run scandisk.

i started running scandisk and i got this message. please help me!

I get a message that the CTL3.DLL file cannot be located and consequently the OPLIMIT/OCRAWARE.EXE file cannot be run.    The 27KB  CTL2 file is in the C:\windows\TEMP folder.  The graphics on the computer have slowed down cosiderably since then.  My OS is 98 2nd edition and the only significant change is that I downloaded Firefox as a browser to replace IE for I have heard/read that is more efficient.  Thanks for your assistance Quote

TRYING to read another person's mind always makes my head hurt.

I was playing my game and all of a sudden everything, including the SOUND, starts skipping. Everything is fine if im not loading something or moving it seems but if I am, it begins to run SLOW until I stop. I dont understand how this happened because I've been playing this game for 6 months and all of a sudden for no reason, everything is running slow.   So I exit my game and restart the COMPUTER but during start up I see this message in DOS. "Warning CPU has been changed please re-enter cpu setting in cmos setup and remember to save before quit!"
    I skip the setup and go to WINDOWS and everything is still running slow, this appears to only happen when I open a program or a folder. My mouse begins to skip ACROSS the screen for a couple of seconds and then my computer returns to normal speed until I open a program or something. I ran some of my virus scan but nothing showed up. I really have no idea what is going on.  
    So I restart my computer again but this time nothing shows up on my screen. The computer is running but my screen is black. After another couple restarts, I can finally see the screen and everything appears to be running smoothly in windows now. I really have no idea what is going on.  
     If someone has any idea as to what is happening, please help.  Are you overclocking your system?

I am on someone elses PC because I disabled my moniter on my Dell Xps Laptop, thinking it would automatically switch over to the ATI card that I had it previously set on. I don't really want to take it in to a PC repair SHOP, so maybe someone could help me.

We are a company that uses Outlook 2002.  When scheduling INTERVIEWS for candidates, we NEED to book them for several hiring managers, thus multiple people's times.  We can send a meeting request, but it would be time-consuming to do a meeting request to each interviewer for one candidate.  We COULD send one meeting request but that would BLOCK all interviewers' calendars for the entire day versus their individual time.

Does anyone have a SOLUTION for this or a product suggestion to work with Outlook 2002 to perform this function efficiently?  Thanks for any and all suggestions.

I've had this problem for quite awhile. I've got windows XP norton antivirus and lavasoft adwatch installed. After each restart I can't click .exe-files and links and programs that autostart won't start.  Just before startup a window popups which SAYS something strange like "|||#|" or other strange symbols, this window I can't close only press ok then windows starts up with the problems.
To temporary solve the problem I now use the files xp_regfile, xp_exe_fix, linkfile_fix which I downloaded from http://www.dougknox.com/ but when I restart the problem repeats itself.

Does anyone KNOW what it might be or how I solve it

Yep, VIRUS is highly likely.  Probably one of the programs you downloaded and installed was infected.

If a antivirus program cannot find and remove the infection, you may want to reinstall the operating system.  When Setup asks what to do, i'd suggest having it FORMAT the partition (that is, the C: drive) with NTFS.  

You will lose all of your files, but that is better than reinstalling an operating system that will only become infected again.

Then install a good antivirus program and update the virus definitions and scan for viruses often.

If you don't use a good antivirus program, some MALICIOUS code will eat you alive (like that monster in the Star Wars movie who swallowed Boba Fett)!

Suddenly, some weeks ago, I found that I was unable to open WordPad. I went chasing and now find that I no longer have the 'ACCESSIBILITY' options on the computer. Wordpad is part of that I remember. How can it just disappear but more importantly how do I get it back? I have some things that I can't read because it says 'too big for Notepad, do you want to open in Wordpad?' and then it can't. I am using Win98 SE4.10you may have deleted the shortcuts from your start menu

NOPE, when I do that it tells me it 'can't find it, make sure of path etc.' I have searched thru Find and the Accessibility options are not in the Accessories where they used to be. dl65  Assuming you have a Win98 CD  you could try uninstalling and reinstalling Wordpad.

Go to Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs >> Windows Setup tab >> double click Accessories >> uncheck Wordpad and OK your way back out. Then repeat the process this time checking Wordpad.You might also like to have a look at

It is alternative to Microsoft office and it is free you will be able to open any file you have created in WordPad or Notepad.Again, nope, it isn't in the control panel.  Yes, Notepad does show up in the Accessories.

Also I don't have Windows on a CD on it's own. I have to do a full re-installation which is a long job (or if it is possible, I don't know how get selected bits off that CD). im not sure if my computer is good enoughe because i look at me drive c and it says the capacity it can hold is 1.96GB is that bad for it?The official MS minimum disk space free is 1.5Gb so you'd be pushing it on 1.95Gb.  If you do not have multiple partitions looks likely you need a bigger hdd.

...Dont try and run windows XP under 256MB of Ram and even then that is pushing it to run XP, with  512 MB everthing works fine with that Ram anything under it makes for hard going, You need at least a 10GB hard drive...

weeks ago my computer started shutting down on its own. I am running windows 2000 Pro. I ATTEMPTED several times to virus scan  but it shutss down in the middle of the scan. I have looked at the event log and  don't really understand what I am seeing. Code #'s or fault #'s. 10006,10009,6005,6006,6009,7001,7026,10010,17. Can you help me figure out what is going on?Will it do the same in safe mode?

I have tried to run the virus scan but it shuts down before completeing. the problem first occured when I tried to load pogo games. since then it happens during normal work functions. It shut down several times yesterday while working in excel.

Hello all, I'm apoligizing forehand just in case if someone already asked this QUESTION but I don't know what to search for to be able to pin POINT it.

Here's the problem. I'm running a Windows XP home with 1 gig ram and I forget what everything else is at the moment.
When this problem happened the computer froze 2 times the first time I was running windows movie maker the second I finished RESTARTING and was about to check my email when the mouse locked up. I thought it was a heat related issue so I took off the side and top panel and restarted, the fans were working properly. The I turned the computer back on and I heard this 2 second lone beep and the monitor won't display anything and the numlock stays lit on the keyboard. I know I didn't touch anything on the inside, and all the wires are still in the same places. the fans are still moving at their normal speeds.
I hoped I gave enough detail. Please help me ='(What BIOS is used?I have no IDEA what BIOS is

I took out the piece that the monitor port is on and blew some dust off. so now it works

I'm not sure what the correct terminology is but in System Mechanic 4 Pro, I used to make like little extra hard drives from my existing drive..

I need to do this because my old DOS game will not install on a hard drive that is more then 4 Gigs.

the system chould not log u on. make shure the username and DOMAIN are correct. then type ur password agan. letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case. make shure the caps lock is not accidently on.

i do not know what this pass or domain is supose to be.

I'm  on  a  shared  computer  and  by  accident   window  messenger  got  automatic  LOG  in   selected  how  can  I  change  this  so  OTHERS  can not  log  into  my  messenger  ............I  went  to  tools  , options  and set  the  settings  but    it's  still  possible  to   just  log  on  automatic.Create a fake account and log in with that, it should hide your previous log in account.it  hides  it  so  long  as no  one  signs  in  again  under  another   name  but  when    you  go  to  sign  in  again  because  I  was   the  first  user  it  comes  back  to  my  account  and  can  be  signed  in  with  a  click  of  a  button. From the adresses you are USING, I assume you are connected to the Internet through a router.

Can you still access the Internet?
Can you still access the Router with both computers?

If not, you may need to do the following:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Network Connections
5. Right click on the Network card(s) listed that are used for connecting to the Router
6. Choose repair.

This also started up just a few days ago (the 11th) out of the blue with no real explanation. And I CAN connect to the internet with all the machines. (its so similar its spooky, virus? I did a scan just lastnight and it didn't find anything but hey who knows)

A work-around I found that if you CHANGE your workgroup on all machines to something else (in my case from "HOME" to "WORKGROUP") that everything settles down. Though I do have the problem of the old computers/workgroup not disapearing > . I currently have dead links to my XP machine that I dont know how to get rid of. If somebody could help me figure out how to delete my old workgroup I'd be much abliged!

UPDATE:
Well the workaround seems to have just killed itself >:|. Just a minute ago I COULD access my XP machine but now I can't. The error Message I get is slightly differant than yours (probably just because it's windows 98SE instead of XP) I get "\\(name) Is not accessable, the device does not exist on the network"

....GRRRRR!!!! Now I can access it again! It changes! And the "HOME" workgroup is empty now that I finished moving all the computers over to the new network. but the workgroup "HOME" it's still listed under the workgroups (maybe a restart will fix it). Something definatly freaky is going on here.

Yup, restart fixed the "HOME" being listed but access to my XP is still intermitantBe certain that there are no IP adress conflicts.Ok, how do I do that? I know there are a lot of websites that will tell you your IP, but they just give the IP of my router. I tryed WINIPCFG but it displayed my IP as 0.0.0.0 and my subnet mask as 0.0.0.0 this cant be right can it?I am not too keen on networking, but you would have to assign each computer a subnetmask (255.255.255.0) and an IP Adress ranging from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254. Your router should automatically do this if DHCP is enabled.

How are your computers connected to eachother?What  router netgear?? did you make a net install disk  from the wizard??  for win net working......most are on mshome?? did you allow the sever whichever one it is to share folders etc.

The other three are connected directally to the router (it's a 4 port router wich is why its set up this way). The two machines that are having trouble connecting to the XP ARE both connected to the hub and not diretally to the router. However both can get on the internet and can browse the shared documents of EVERY other machine (both those directally connected to the router and the ones that are connected indirectally through the hub) EXCEPT they can't browse the XP im having trouble with. BUT it works the other way, the XP can browse the two machines that can't browse it.

Out of the three computers connected to the hub two of them cannot connect to the XP but one of them can, all three of wich are running win 98se.

Thanks for the input.  I find that to Install Windows 2000, all service packs and updates takes almost 3-4 hours.  Is this common?

Maybe a virus!You WOULD have to write a macro, but Merlin is right. Opening mail indiscriminately is a surefire WAY to introduce VIRUSES into your system.

In that case it may be the security device stopping you... The security device recognizes the specs of the computer it installed on.. If major changes take place (change of motherboard, etc.) then it prevents installation for that CD key... Unless you can call MICROSOFT... Could this be the problem?

The attatchmetns are probably .jpeg files, or other types of picture files.  You need to get a picture view, or graphics app to open the pictures in.

I want to build SEVERAL, almost identical macros for Outlook.  Once I have one, the others will be easy to clone.

outlook has a way to show the calendar in two time ZONES.  That is, on the left side of the calendar, it will WHOS the times in two time zones, not just one.  I need a macros to allow the user to set or to change the second time zone.  We set his appointments on Pacific time.  When he travels, he needs to see them in Eastern, Central, whatever time zone he is in.  YES, I know it is easy to make the change in Tools, Options, etc.  

Since Outlook does not have a Macro Recorder, such as in Word or Excel, I assume I need to set the properties of the form on screen.  I do not have a clue how to get started.  In all, I guess I wil need macros to set the second time zone to Eastern, one to set it at Central and one that removes the second SETTING, for when he is on the west coast.

If anyone can get me started I would be grateful.

First of all, I'd like to apologize if I'm in the wrong forum.  It was a choice of either this one or OTHER... didn't know which, for sure.  OK, prepare for a long story.

(Computer stats: win 98se, 1GHZ duron, 1/2 gig ram)

Many moons ago, out of the clear blue sky, my printer stopped being able to print and would shoot me a spool32 error.  This printer is an apollo p-2150U and is a USB printer and an HP-based printer.  I didn't panic, de-installed and re-installed the printer software... no change.  This is where I started trying EVERYTHING under the sun... and I know I'll forget to mention something, but here goes.  I've tried every combination with my memory dimms to make sure they are fine(they are), I've re-installed windows multiple times... crap, I just can't remember all  I did back then, but it was a lot.  Many hours wasted.  So, in desperation I hooked up my DOT MATRIX(you heard me) printer... and it worked!  No spool error EVER with the dot matrix.

I gave up, until recently to try and get my ink jet to work... but my wife has the need to print color stuff and a dot matrix just ain't gunna hack it.  So I recently tried to install the ink jet software.  Now I get the spool32 error during installation.  What's worse... even with the printer software off the computer, my internet shoots off the spool32 error when it connects.  HUH?  Why should I get a spool32 error connecting to the internet?  So, on the off chance it was the printer that's the problem, I gave it to my brother-in-law to use... and he gets no spool32 error.  Crap.  So I purchase an HP psc 1300 hoping a new printer might break the curse.  It shoots me the same spool32 error during installation.

I've searched the net all over and all spool32 error documentation deals with an installed printer having hissy-fits, NOT getting the spool32 error during installation.  My computer is somehow hosed with USB printers and I don't know why.

I've recently downloaded FREE registry cleanup software, but it won't clean everything (have to pony up $40-50) and I'm not sure that's the problem (but I do have some 180ish outstanding registry errors needing to be cleaned).  I also downloaded (and removed after it was done) some sort of debug software to look for obvious errors on my system.  It found none.

sweettoothIs the printer detected in device manager? If yes, right click on it and select properties. Click the driver tab. Click update driver. Click "Have disk". Insert the HP disk and POINT windows to it.
Do you a virus program installed on your pc! what one is it!No viruses.
I go to the PC-cillin site fairly regularly and it says I got nothing.
The last thing my computer had was a worm... can't remember what the name of it was, but I got rid of it.  That was a couple of months ago and this problem happened way before the worm occurred.

Also, to the first poster, the errors are happening while I'm INSTALLING the printer... with the drivers it's looking for.  I don't think what you've suggested will cure whatever is up... but I appreciate the suggestion.

I am having problems with my computer. i am running win 98se, 1Gb amd chip and 30Gb hard drive.
I have been using an external CD burner for several years..Acer 4406 eu.

Over the last week I have been having problems with burning Cds..the whole system hangs after say 65% of the disc is burned..the system continues to hang after ctrl alt del..quite often the dialog box of programs running shows" msgsrv32 is not responding"..switching off the burner does not help either.
today the burner started asking me to ensure that I had loaded a blank disc with sufficient space..i had, checked this prob with a new disc of different brand..same warning..HANGING again etc etc. i have tried uninstalling the software ..easy Cd creator ver 4 and direct CD 3....uninstalling the drive and reinstalling.  all to no avail. The driver has infact gone into C\windows\system\iosubsys...and the drive does not show up in the device manager.
I installed the burner onto my laptop..all seemed well until  tried burning a Cd.."insert disc with sufficient space"etc, so I think that the burner is dished.

I ran system file checker and dr WATSON and got the messages below.

Is this a separate issue?  I have recenly installed spybot. My anti virus software is norton AV 2005..always up to date.

Finally i do not have an OS disc..just the system recovery disc..no copies,..all OS is legit
I am fairly computerate, but the world of registry backup, restoration ,reg EDIT and scan reg etc are very new     tasks for me.

Hi! I inherited a computer from my Dad after he passed away and gave my old one to Goodwill. It's been updated and I have no problems with software, etc. thanks to some guru friends. My Dad always did things first class and so it has a D and E drive. One is Read/Write I think and the other is Read only, although I really do not know which one I should use for music CDs. When I put a music CD in either drive it says: "A required .DLL file, MMVCP70.DLL was not found." When I try to save data to a CD (D or E drive) it says: "The selected drive disk is not in use. Check to make sure the disk is inserted." The disk is inserted. What am I doing wrong? I am FAIRLY computer savvy but this is out of my league.So what I think I've got so far is that the Hard disk is C:, D: & E: could be either cdrom or a cd writer.  

What OS are you using and what burning software are you using to "save" (burn) to a cd.

How old is the system, what KIND of disks are you trying to burn to/read from, cdr or cdrw?What version of Windows is installed and what program are you using to play [music] CDs?Do you have a program called musicmatch installed on your pc !In answer to all replies: The computer is a Genuine Intel, Pentium III w/ Windows 98 and it's about 5 years old. 1) Is it possible to run Fdisk from windows dos prompt?

2)I am seeing options like:

1. Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive
2.  Set active partition
3.  Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive
4.  Display partition information

(Note: I want to keep my c drive intact)

You have two partitions - C: - & - D:

To construct this in the first place you WOULD have had to make a Primary DOS drive - C: - and set it active (A) then make an Extended DOS drive and then a Logical DOS drive which is your drive - D:

Now that you want to split this in two using fdisk you should remove all data from drive D: and then, using fdisk, delete drive D: and make a new Logical drive D: of 500Mb and a further Logical drive E: using the remainder of the drive space.

After making the new Logical drives D: & E: you need to press ther Esc key until you have exited the fdisk program and SEE a Message asking you to re-boot.

Reboot and start formatting the two new drives.

A:\>format d: , and press Enter

A:\>format e: , and press Enter

Alternatively you could use a Partition Resizing program but that will cost you whereas fdisk is 'free'.[size=18]Thank You,Mac [/size]Why bother on a 2.1gig drive

It may be that the uninstall program MUST run in DOS mode.  Is your operating system Windows XP?

Try this to uninstall the SP:

1. Click Start > Control Panel
2. In the left pane of Control Panel, click Switch to CLASSIC View
3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs
4. In the left pane of Add or Remove Programs, select Change or Remove Programs
5. Scroll down to the bottom of the list (or near the bottom) and see if Windows XP Service Pack 2 is listed
6. If it is, select it and click Remove
7. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the SP
8. Windows XP will attempt to remove the SP files and restore the backup copies of your old system files that it saved to your hard drive
9. If XP SP 2 is not on the list, you either selected the option to not backup the files or the SP 2 setup program could not find enough room on your hard drive to make the backup
