Solve : Motherboard Probelm?????

Answer»

Hi, I posted a couple days back about NTLDR error, and I have gotten far past that and installed windows and EVERYTHING. But now I face a very "irritating" problem. I had this problem before I installed a new Sound CARD, Video Card, and Hard Drive. Now here is the problem:

The computer boots up all the way to Desktop just fine. But...basically every game I have installed and most programs do not work. My machine is way capable of running these games and programs. Anyways, take for instance Battlfield 2, I will try to start the game and BOOM....back to desktop before getting into it. Also the original Battlefield 1942 does the same thing but with an error sound, but no error message. It does this with a ton of programs and most of the games/programs won't even install.

I have reason to think that this is a problem with my motherboard. As most of the hardware in my computer is new (sound card, video card, hard drive). LIKE I SAID earlier, I had this problem with my old hard drive, video card, and when onboard sound was enabled. PLEASE any help at all would help at all.

Solve : Registry Checker NIGHTMARE?

Answer»
This time a real catastrophy. Downloaded a registry checker, all 4mb, from Meta Products (who have not even answered call for help).

At ShutDown and at StartUp I'm presented with blue screen as follows:
Microsoft Registry Checker (MSN non longer supports)
c:\windowa\system.dat
Restore Desktop (check mark OK)
Restoring Devices Listed IN ASP (check mark OK)
RESTORING FILES/FOLDERS (no check mark OK)

After about ten minutes the horizontal progress bar stops at 86%. Then box appears found an error cannot repair. Try reducing number of files , otherwise REINSTALL (a course of action I will do anything to avoid!)

Point is I cannot get out of this screen. No cursor; no boxes of any kind. Must shutsoen, whereupon same thing restarts. At SAFE MODE I deleted anything about Registry with installation date 23AUG05. That is how I am now online. BUT THE SCREEN STILL APPEARS GOING IN OR OUT. Sometimes the error box doesn't appear and I'm in. Sometimes not, and I know not why.

You can see this is a real emergency in dire NEED of some expertise.

Failing resolution, and even if successfully resolved, please advise exact path at SafeMode that permits restoration (W98SE) to a given date -- in my case 22AUG05.

I dare not shutdown day or night fearing inability to get back. Please help!

Cordially, RO
I don't think you can restore TJE registry from safe mode. You will have to boot to "command prompt only". Then type scanreg/restore. It will bring up a LIST from which to CHOOSE. Thank you, 2k dummy.
The very last thing I want to do is to restore the Registry. I just want to get rid of that *censored* blue screen coming and going.   Cordially,WHAT I FIND MOST DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND IS WHY THE BLUE SCREEN PRESENCE CANNOT BE REMOVED. If I could find its source (online), deleting it should effectively get rid of it because it will not have any source!
As said, I have deleted anything downloaded/installed on date problem began. But STILL it appears. Any ideas you all?Have you actually uninstalled the culprit program? Download regclean and run it (from MS - relatively safe). Use start/find to search the system for left over directories or files. If found, delete them. Then use start/run/msinfo32. Click tools/system configuration utility. Click the startup tab. Uncheck anything that looks out of place (after doing this, a systen restart will be necessary). Be sure to click apply for each item unchecked. My first choice would be to restore the registry to a prior date. If you have rebooted many time during this process, you might not be able to restore the registry. Let your particular situation determine what to try first.

Solve : Can't Start-up Win. Please help?

Answer»

Well here's the problem, last night I was trying to tweak my dsl internet connection with
a DSL Tweaks website GUIDE.(nothing I haven't done before) so I went to restart my computer
so the settings would go into effect. The website said the program I was using wasn't installed
into my computer but it changes the registry around. So my computer booted as it normally does until
it came to the logg-in SCREEN, my Username was already in there so I went to type in my Password and it was
as if my keyboard/mouse froze up and I was unable to type anything, or move my mouse pointer around. I turned off
my PC and started it back up again, and I saw that when I got to my boot screen my mouse still works and the pointer
moves around, but as soon as I hit a button on the keyboard they both stop working... When the comp. boots up I can get into
my set-up menu by hitting F1 and do some type of restore by hitting F10, so I entered the setup menu and set everything there to
default and hit save changes and the same thing kept happening. I can't enter Safe Mode, because it still wont let me get through the
Logg-in.
I have a HP Pavilion, with Win Xp
2.6GHz P.4 processor
512MB RAM
80GB HD

If anyone could give any suggestions on what I could do, I would greatly appreciate it, thanks.1. Before Windows XP LOADS, press F8
2. Select Last known good configuration and press Enter.I did that before, and it still pops up the logg-in screen, where i have to logg-in, and i can't. Try the FOLLOWING:

Installing and Using Recovery Console

Perform a Repair Installation

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XPDewood:

Are you saying the website changed your registry?  Please explain.  http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp is what I used, I haven't tried those links yet because I'm at work right now, when I get someone to print them for me I'll give them a try, thanks for your time guys, I'll let you know whats up.http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Nav?h_pagetype=s-001&h_lang=en&h_cc=ca&h_product=12455&h_client=S-A-R311-1&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&cc=ca

Solve : problems withattempt to load SP2 for XP?

Answer»

I have just rebuilt my XP and reloaded most of my SOFTWARE. When i try to load the XP service pack from a disk, after it extracts the files i get a messagesaying that there is no need to update, or words to that effect??
my SP2 disk and messages are in german, so i don't recall the exact translation.

anyone seen this occur, and how can i get SP2 onto the *censored* MACHINE without first going online, which always puts me in the catch 22 situation of getting hit by a Trojan-downloader program upon initial CONNECTION without SP2 running?
helpInstall a software firewall before connecting to the Internet. Then download Service Pack 2.

Set the software firewall to block all incoming traffic but what WINDOWS Update needs.Zaq:

Or, you may order SP2 absolutely free and receive the CD in the mail in 4-6 weeks, no matter where you live in the world.

The CD also has the latest SPs for Windows 98, 98SE, 2000, and ME.  Here is the link:

Solve : virtual memory low.?

Answer»

help!!! my computer keeps saying my virtual memory is 2 low. Could someone please tell me how to fix this problem. thanks!!Take the following steps:

1. Right CLICK on My Computer
2. Properties
3. Advanced tab
4. Performance section/Settings button
5. Advanced tab
6. Virtual Memory section/Adjust button
7. Select the drive on which the virtual memory file resides.
8. Choose No swap file
9. Restart the computer
10. Follow steps 1 through 6.
11. Choose a PARTITION or Hard Disk Drive to set the swap file on
12. Select Custom size.

Use the following formula to determine how big your swap file should be:

2048 MINUS physical RAM = size of swap file.

I.E: 2048 - 512MB RAM = 1536 MB swap file.

You should have no questions or problems if you follow the steps exactly as written above. How much RAM does your system have Becky? You often get a low - virtual - memory warning if there is insufficient RAM.

When you run defrag on the drive how much free-space is there left, as a %age?Becky:

Mac made excellent suggestions.  Also, another cause of low virtual memory may be that too many programs are running at the same time.

Try right-clicking each icon in the system tray (it's where the Windows clock is displayed) and select the option to NOT start the program when Windows starts.  The *only* program you USUALLY need to start with Windows is an antivirus program.  All other programs you usually may start yourself when you need them.

There are other ways to keep programs from starting every time you turn on your computer, but start there and see if it helps.

Regards,
Doc  I usually go by 1:2 ratio.

1 Ram 2 Virtual memory.RAM Knowledge Base
RAM And What it Does
RAM Virtual Memory Paging
RAM Reseating & Fitting PDF File

I would work on 512 MB minimum amount of RAM for XP.

Solve : drive not being picked up - windows hangs?

Answer»

I have a Maxtor ATA100 card in my puter with four 160GB drives attached. The fourth drive, a recent addition (Western Digital) is empty except it has a Windows Temp Folder on it with files in it. Oddly, this WD drive is not being PICKED up by the card on EVERY second reboot. When it isn't picked up and I let it finsh booting it hangs at the windows spalsh screen (where the "LED" blinks across saying windows is loadng) and it hangs permanently. If I power down and reboot it picks up the drive and goes into windows fine. At the DOS level, I tried this 12 times - 6x no drive, 6x drive seen - ALWAYS in sequence!

First, how can I try relocating the windows temp folder  and why is it on that drive (I don't believe I did anything to create it there) to another drive?

Second, how can I fix the drive being picked up by the card?

I always encounter the weird ones!Hen:

Need more info before we may give informed advice:

* What operating system is installed?

* Does the same behavior occur if you remove one of the other three drives but keep the new WD drive connected?

* What is the make and model of the computer so we may look up its specs at the manufacturer's WEBSITE?

* What are the makes and models of the other hard drives? (Or tell us, at least, are they are all WD or not?)

* Does the problem still continue when you disconnect the fourth (new WD) hard drive?

* Does this still happen when you boot to SAFE Mode several consecutive times?

Let us know soon,
Doc
Maybe one these will work, maybe none. You will be no worse off for trying.

1. Connect the WD drive to an on board IDE connector instead of the card.
2. If you have 80 pin IDE cables, set both drives to CS (cable select)
3. If neither of those work, try SETTING the WD as master and the Maxtor as slave. Or vise versa. Many thanks for the replies. My answers, as I have them:
Win XP SP2
have not yet tried disconnecting
Clone computer - home built as it were
3 Maxtor, 1 WD
not yet tried
yes, the card scans for the drives long before you get that far - right after BIOS read

PCDoc
I will try that
Have not tried cable select
this is how they are set. When the WD had no JUMPER it did not get picked up at all
Quote

When the WD had no jumper it did not get picked up at all

That is the same as setting it for single drive operation.

Solve : Unformatting yields strange results?

Answer»

Used unformat.exe from Norton SystemWorks 2002. Most of the new directories have alot of the same files. Only a few of my original files are available. Most are GIFS. Unerase didn't find a thing. No image was available.

It's like a few directories were copied over and over, almost a thousand of the same folders. What's happened here? How can I get my files back?Have you tried checking the Symantec website for a solution to the problem?

Yeah, been all through there. Surprised at how little help I've found. Quote

...It's like a few directories were copied over and over, almost a thousand of the same folders. What's happened here? How can I get my files back?

It could be that something went seriously wrong with the PROGRAM, or a virus produced the folders and files.

Pls explain why you used the unformat.exe software.  What were the events that led up to you using it, and what did you want the program to accomplish?

Doc
do you mean goback?
To Recover Files in NTFS:

Click Start, Run and enter %systemdrive%\Recycler.  Under this folder you'll see sub folders with names like:
S-1-5-21-1085031214-854245398-1060284298-1003

ONE of these is your user's Recycle Bin folder, you'll have to determine which.  Then OPEN a Command Prompt Window and type: Start/Run and type in: CMD

CD\Recycled\
Next type DIR

Locate the files with the file extension that you wish to recover. There may be more than one of the same type. These files will all be DC??.xxx where ?? is a number and xxx is the file extension.

Use the COPY command to copy all of the matching files out. For example:  COPY *.DOC C:\Temp

to copy all DOC files to C:\Temp. Now you can open these files and find the one(s) that you wanted to retrieve.  Once you've retrieved all the files that you need, type the following command:  ATTRIB -S -H -R INFO2

Solve : Need to free up RAM?

Answer»

I am having problems opening up programs because the system says I have no resources available. How do I shut down programs running in the background to free up RAM?
BGWhich OS? How much RAM does your system have and how is the paging file set?

Need to know that first.Blookah:

Mac is right, how we solve your problem depends on what kind of operating system you have.  If you tell us that, but you don't know how much RAM or anything about your virtual memory settings, we will show you how to determine this.

Regards,
DocI have 1GB RAM and don't know how my paging file is set.
BGOperating system is Windows XP Home.Open the Control Panel and CLICK on System. Then go to Advanced, Performace, Settings, Advanced (again), Virtual Memory and see what it says.

Then click on Change and see if it is system managed.

Have you tried checking your RAM with MemTest86 overnight?

Are you using very big programs possibly?Mac,
It is not system managed but...the other info as FOLLOWS:
Drive (volume label)
C:1500-3072
D: 1500-1500
C Drive Space available 3854 MB
Custom Size (checked)
Initial Size 1536 MB
Maximum Size 3072 MB

Total Size
Minimum 2 MB
Recommended 1534 MB
Current 3036 MB
Hope this helps. I have never done the test you mentioned. I do not know how or even of it.
BGAlso programs being used are not that big.Just on this point: C Drive Space available 3854 MB , when you run defrag what %age of the drive does it show as free-space? 15% is the limit. It might be better to put the minimum recommended paging file on C: and the rest on D:

And, how much free-space does drive D have?

If it is free-space that is the problem, see if following this cleanup routine helps at all...

"Run Disk Cleanup and remove all but the last restore point. See if your System Restore cache and Recycle Bin size is set at a reasonable level (SAY 1024Mb) on each drive, and reduce the IE Temporary Internet Files cache and History cache to the minimum. Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files. Unhide all files and folders and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and remove their entries from Add-Remove programs.
(Note: Some Security updates should NOT be removed so check in add-remove programs - before - doing this task.)
Then remove the contents of:

The C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded INSTALLATIONS folder
The C: WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder
The C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder
The C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\Datacoll folder, and...
The C:\Windows\Prefetch folder

(You can add these folders to EmpTemp if you have this program installed.) Then run chkdsk and defrag."

Solve : Computer screen freezes?

Answer»

Problem:

This problem started a couple of months ago. My COMPUTER stops RESPONDING when I play AVI files, video games or some times when I'm surfing the net and visiting sites with flash portions.
I have tried everything. Formating my computer, changing video cards, changing SD-RAM and even a different hard-drives.
The only thing I haven't tried changing is the motherboard and CPU. The only other change I recently made on the computer was wireless keyboard and mouse.
But I was having the same problem with regular keyboard and mouse.
I even tried different operating systems, nothing worked.
Is it my drivers, my bios, my wiring?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Additional information:

ATI All-in-wonder 128 Video Card
52x32x52 CDRW
16x DVD
On-board modem, LAN and sound.

Diagnose/troubleshooting:

Formated the computer, changed operating systems and changed hardware components. Quote

...The only thing I haven't tried changing is the motherboard and CPU. ...I even tried different operating systems, nothing worked.
Is it my drivers, my bios, my wiring?...

Kapil:

That's one i've not tried: Swapping out the OS!  I believe that means some hardware is to blame.

It might help us to be sure if you answer a few questions:

* Can you think of anything that might have changed just prior to the problem OCCURRING?  A new software program?  A new hardware device?

* Also, are you using the original video controller, or have you added a new video card?

* Did you check for the problem just after you installed the new operating system, or did you check for the problem after you installed the OS and some software programs?

Let us know,
Doc
Here are the answers to the questions in order:
* The only new hardware I installed was the wireless keyboard and mouse. I know that it didn't contribute to the freezing of the computer because the problem occured well after teh installation.
* I bought a used video card about two years ago but when this problem occured I removed it and formated the hard drive. So now I'm using the on-board VGA video.
* The problem started while I had Windows XP as my OS. I have tried every Windows OS other than Windows 95. But every time I install a new OS the same problem occurs, my screen freezes and the mouse stops responding as well as the keyboard.

My guess is that my drivers are giving me this problem. I dunno, I'm really stuck here.

There is one important thing though, my video card is an all-in-wonder TV tuner card. One time when the computer froze, the TV was still going on and everything else stopped. This doesn't happen with other video files are playing, they just hang.

With the exemption of some MPEG files, all other media files e.g., AVI, MP3, MOV etc. are the ones that cause this problem. Even with some websites that have ads cause the freeze, for instance, www.excite.com and www.canadasys.com have some animation ads, I think flash or something, that cause the freeze.

Any tip would be greatly appreciated.

Thnaks,How have you reformatted  the Hard Disk Drive?

You should obtain disk management software from your Hard Disk Drive manufacturer and write zeroes to the entire Hard Disk Drive before reformatting.
The only disk manager software that I have is bootit NG from the web. It just makes PARTITIONS and formats the hard drive. I only choose one partition and then format the drive. I think that I have Seagate, but I'm not sure. I'll try to DOWNLOAD the disk management software from the website.

There is one more thing that I would like to add though, the computer also freezes when I boot it up after a few hours or the other day. But when I press the reset but and it reboots, it turns on ok. After that it only freezes when I try to play multimedia files or some sites with flash plugin.

I greatly appreciate your help.
If you are certain that you have a Seagate, make use of the following tool: DiscWizard Starter Edition

Writing zeroes to the Hard Disk Drive completely destroys all data present, but is not harmful to the Hard Disk Drive. It may also take a very long time.

It will at least eliminate software problems. If the problem stil occurs, you know it is not the software.

Solve : No Boot Device Available, Help!?

Answer» HEY all,

I just installed a new HARD drive on my Dell laptop as well as a fresh version of Windows 2000.  Everything seemed fine, I even restarted a few times while installing other programs, but after shutting down and trying to power back up, I got a "no boot device AVAILABLE" error message.  Was I supposed to format the drive first?  I figured Windows 2K would take care of all that stuff for me.  How do I get BIOS to recognize the boot drive?  Do I have to wipe Windows and start over??

Thanks in advance for any advice,
EddieSeeing you have just done a fresh install I'd do it again.
Choose the format OPTION from W2k.
Install antivirus, antispyware & a firewall before connecting to the net. Quote

Sounds like either the IDE cable or the molex connector from the power supply might not be not firmly in PLACE.  Disconnect the IDE cable from, and reconnect the IDE cable to, both the motherboard and the hard drive.  Disconnect and reconnect the Molex connector.  Then, try to reboot.

Solve : xp and word?

I am thinking of getting a  $500 COMPUTER at walmart that has xp and want to know if Microsoft Word or Works come with it like 98 does? Sorry if this post does not belong here. Also can xp be put on a computer that runs 98 or are thier problems? My computer is P3 667[compaq 5900t] I have 128mb mem.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/meandxp.mspx

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_9x.htmYou would have to check with WalMart to see if word comes with the computer.

XP doesn’t come with word but some times when you buy a new computer it comes as a extra application.

You could also run XP on the P3 computer but it may run very slow because you only have 128mb Ram. It you upgrade to 512MB ram it should run XP fine.

If your new computer doesn't come with word your can download a free alterative from this web site
www.openoffice.org it can open other Microsoft office documents and also save documents in Microsoft office formats. Quote

Why not have a custom build computer? I wouldn't bother with BRAND junk.

Microsoft Word XP or 2002, or whatever VERSION comes with the computer will work the same but most likely look SLIGHTLY more advanced and feature more options.

Should not be a problem. Unless you have less than 10GB of HDD space. Do not expect Windows XP to run as fast as Windows 98 on a computer like that, though.

Is this the sign that the hard drive has died, or can it be repaired with Win XP?

PLEASE adviseHave you changed (added/removed/replaced) any hardware or changed you bios settings recently??  If you've replaced your hdd make sure it's jumpered as Master.

This could be caused by your bios setting or by hardware.  Confirm that hdd 0 is specified in your bios and if that seems ok then check the connections between mobo & hdd and while you are inside your box reseat as many cards as you can.

Warning.. Take all the necessary precautions before removing any cover from your magic box.  Ensure the power is off and that you are earthed to prevent a static discharge!!
Also, remove any floppy disks from the floppy drive and reboot.

Also, after you follow M_2's advice first, do this next:

Press the F8 key during boot and choose the Boot Log OPTION from the menu.  Windows will boot normally but create a log with all the drivers that are loaded and those that FAIL to load.  Later you may check the log (we will explain where to find it) to see what driver may be causing the system to not boot properly.  Disabling or replacing the driver may fix the problem.

Networking two COMPUTERS.I am using NTL broadband always on connection through set top box which also delivers satalite channels.I have an ethernet connection straight to the motherboard and two network cards one in each computer and a cross over cable linking both cards. The green lights are lit on both cards. After running the network set up wizard on both computers I seem to have a connection but when I try to use the client computer to access the web I get the message can't find server.I have pinged both IP addresses from each computer and get a reply from both pc's.In the network window on the host pc I have two area connections one says local connection shared and the other says local connection 11.When i click on local connection 11 in the details window it says LAN connected. Have you set the CORRECT DNS server? If you manually configure the IP adress, you also need to set the DNS server.

Solve : virus scan program messing up windows?

Answer»

Everytime i install mcafee virus scan on my laptop, the installation goes about halfway, then stops. the computer doesnt freeze, the installation just halts.

so, i click cancel and then, the computer never shuts down when i try to turn it off. when i right click "my computer," nothing HAPPENS and it wont open system restore.

i have to use the manufacture cd's to completely reformat my laptop, but my college requires mcafee to gain internet access.

why does it do this?

You did have a anti virus installed didn't you ?

let us know

dl65  thanks.

my college requires mcafee, but there cant be a virus, since it has been reformated, and it hasnt even been hooked up to the internet. Before installing McAfee did you run chkdsk and defrag? Is the McAfee CD scratch free, uncracked and scrupulously clean?

If there is a scratch on the label side you will get read errors. If it is dirty you'll get read errors.

If it is cracked then oxydisation will have rendered the CD useless.

"Make sure that the CD(s) you are using is/are scrupulously clean. You can WASH them in luke-warm water with two drops of mild soap solution mixed in and a soft sponge, then gently dry with a clean linen cloth. Doing this simple task very often solves the problem of read errors from the CD and ensures a smooth install."So, i checked my college computing webiste and was reading the requirements for internet connection. there was a notice to anyone using Hewlett Packard with XP or 2000. The CD recording software tht HP automatically installs somehow interferes with Mcafee installation, causing the computer to lock up. I deleted the software, installed mcafee and everything is working fine!I suppose that is ROXIO Easy CD Creator. Seems to be a common fault and one I had years ago. I now use NERO Burning 6.

If you need free burning now that you have uninstalled EZ CDC you could try DeepBurner freeware version.

Then there is Audacity sound recorder and Open Office if you need more open SOURCE freeware.

Solve : DCOM Errors?

Answer»

I frequently get 2 DCOM errors while shutting down. When I am shutting down, I hear the critical stop sound, and when I checked my event viewer I found these 2 errors,

The PfModNT service failed to start due to the following error:

The system cannot find the FILE specified.

DCOM got error "The service database is LOCKED. " attempting to start the service netman with arguments "" in order to run the server:

{BA126AE5-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

Is there any way to fix these DCOM errors, and if that is not possible through the forum goers KNOWLEDGE, is there any way to remove the critical stop sound (I have already tried to give the critical stop no sound, but upon shutdown it still ques the sound). It would help if you told us what OS you are using.  However goto http://www.tech-forums.net/computer/topic/14960.html and browse there.  Looks likely your soundcard driver causes the problem.  GOOGLE for heaps more info.I recently Installed a new soundcard in addition to an old ONE. How do I get rid of it?I just disabled the other soundcard. If the DCOM errors go away then I know it's due to the second soundcard installation and I will remove it. Thanks.

Using Windows XP btw.

Solve : Computer Help !?

Answer»

Hello and im sorry i didnt know where to post this Q i have to as any 1 with info to help me out.

Ok guy's other computer (not this 1) it is 1yr and 1month Old.

About 6 months ago ive started noticing pretty big problem's with it. It was keep crashing for no apparent reason with a blue SCREEN apperaing " saying windows has gotta shut down to prevent any long term damage" and after restarting my computer the screen wud reappear and not allow me to use the comp unless i rebooted the System in which i had to do.

anyhow. This kept HAPPENING Every 1 month even tho i was using Norton 2005 security so was thinkin cant be a virus of such sort?

But then these error's increasing started to be alot more frequent like every 1hr or 5hr or 24hr's. but this was different. a Blue screen did appoear but with Error's this time. 1 i remember said.

"KERNEL_INPAGE_SYSTEM_ERROR"
and sorry we have to shut windows down etc etc.
this screen stayed on for a mere 10sec's before it shut the computer down so i cudnt get a long enuf look to write all down.

It allowe dme back onto the computer without reformatting after about 30mins i ran a full virus scan and scanned all files with using norton and all was Clear. no error's of VIRUSES or such found.

I've had alot of help from friend saying restart the comp from best and last configuration start windows in safe mode and run (chkdsk) etc i cleared the fan's and check to see if it was causing the comp to over heat. and all seemed in working order. But these error's seem to Occur WHILST im playing games for the screen saver come's on. im thinkin CUD it be the graphic's card? it's only 1yr old tho? if not is there any other logical explination and what does KENERL_IN_PAGE_SYSTEM_ERROR?

thx all for ya time.

regardsI've never come across this error but seems likely your page file is being corrupted by a hardware problem.  Here's a lot of info for you to browse thru', note that after changing the hard drive the problem disappeared for the O.P.

Solve : PCI Network Card Problem?

Answer»

Hi

Was wondering if anyone could help me, as my technical knowledge is sadly limited!

I recently got broadband and want to share it with an other COMPUTER in my house via a LAN. Recently bought a Belkin PCI Network Card and have got as far as INSERTING it into a free PCI slot.

When I start up the computer it says that there has been a Plug and Play configuration error and shows a prompt to ENTER the setup. Although the computer recognises that the card is there, it will not allow me to use it when I open windows (I'm using XP).

I've tried taking out the dial up modem card that was previously installed, as I'd heard there could be a conflict, but this had no effect...

I'm using a Dell Dimension 8200 desktop, Pentium 4, running XP.

I'd appreciate any ideas anyone may have on this!!

Thanks

NB.. Relocated the card to a different PCI slot, and this inexplicably solved the problem!!!

The card may not be supported by Dell. Refer to their website to find out what hardware is supported.

Why do people keep buying brand PCs?You must install the drivers for the nic card either from a disc of online from the maker of the card

Solve : boot drive loss- windows gone, CD driver gone!?

Answer»

My main hard disk just failed, so I have no windows. I need to reinstall windows, and have the install cd.  However, although I can GET the DOS screen up, it cant see the cd rom drive any more - presumably since the (ATAPI) cd rom driver was on the failed drive. So: does anyone have any idea how I get round this apparent catch 22? At present I cant install windows because I have no CD drive.

Is there a recomended driver I can download on to a floppy perhaps, and run it from there, (I can still access the floppy disk drive) or copy it onto another drive? I still have two valid disk drives left, but sadly neither of them has windows on.
Your BIOS either supports booting from CD-ROM or it does not. This has nothing to do with Windows drivers.

You should set the CD-ROM drive as the first boot device. If you can not do this, use the Windows XP bootable diskettes that can be obtained here   for Windows XP Professional SP 2. If you have another version of Windows XP, you will have to search http://www.microsoft.com[/url].Ok. I'v looked uo the link you have suggested, but the instructions seem a bit ambiguous to me. I'm being a bit paranoid because without an OS (other than the internal dos commands) on my home pc I have to download this from work - and  I cant risk zapping the work machine.

the instructions say

"
Click the Download BUTTON in the upper right-hand corner of this page to start the download, or choose a different language from the drop-down list and click Go.
Do one of the following:
To start the installation immediately, click Open or Run this program from its current location.
NOTE: The installation program will prompt you to provide formatted, 1.44MB floppy disks onto which the installation program will copy its files.
To copy the download to your computer for installation at a later time, click Save and choose a location on your hard disk for saving the FILE.
"

Now when it refers to starting the installation, does that mean it will just start the process of creating the set of bootable floppy disks, or does it mean it will actually start trying to install windows on the current machine? Which WOULD obviously be disastrous.Be certain you download the correct version. If you do not have Windows XP Professional SP2, then do not download these but look for others on the same website.

Once you have found them, simply download the installer (Most likely a .exe) and you will be prompted to insert a 1.44MB diskette. You will continue to be prompted until it has had 6 diskettes.

I have never used bootable diskettes for Windows XP, but the instructions should be straight forward and can not differ much from Pre-Windows XP bootable diskettes.

Quote

does that mean it will just start the process of creating the set of bootable floppy disks

Yes.

Quote
, or does it mean it will actually start trying to install windows on the current machine

No.

It was a GENERAL suggestion. You can either "Save as" or "Open With" like you can with any file.ok, thanks for the clarification

excuse my paranoia - zapping my own machine was bad enough, zapping a work one unthinkable Quote

Solve : How can I get my Background settings back??

Answer»

I have a version of the Windows XP.

I USE to be able to change my background on my desktop by right click, properties, background.

But now, when I go into properties, the option of changing my background is gone. I now only have two choices Screen Saver and Display (colour resolution, screen size etc).

Now when I right click a picture in My Pictures and set it as my background, it does not work.

The background I have now says something like Warning Your computer might be affect with adware or spyware and it tells me to install their latest version of their SOFTWARE to protect my privacy by clicking a link that leads me to their webpage. I want to get rid of this background and put my own on (nor do I want their software).

I have uninstalled this program but the background is still there.

Anybody know how I can get my background settings back so I will be able to change my background?

Thanks

Are you suggesting me to go to the link

If so than as you can see it does not lead me to a specific website?

What is

Can you please clarify which file I need to save and what does import mean?

Thanks

COPY the red text into notepad and save it with a .reg file extension. Then DOUBLE-click on it to - merge - it (add the key) into your registry.
Mac, I did what you told me to do

copied the red text into notepad and saved it with a .reg file and double clicked on it. Some message came up and I clicked ok to them.

So the file was merged into the registry but nothing happened. I still COULD not change my background and the 'background' option that should normally be in 'properties' was still not there - even after I restarted my computer.

What should I do?

You should ignore these messages at all times.

Solve : Toolbar missing?

Answer»

Hi I was wondering if someone could help me with a problem that I have been having.  I have Windows XP and for some reason my windows toolbar has dissapeared.  I have scanned my computer for viruses and that doesnt seem to be the problem.  I have no clue of what to do.  I have even tried to restart my computer at an earlier date but my computer wont allow me to do that.  Is there anyone that could PLEASE help me?!! thanks!!What Windows toolbar?

Are you referring to the Taskbar?
I am referring to the toolbar that is at the bottom of the screen on my desktop...it might be the task bar i dont really know! Its the place that has the start button.  Can you access the Start menu by pressing the Windows button on your keyboard?no i push that button and nothing will come up.  i have tried to do the system restore and it says that i cant do it on my computer.   Quote

no i push that button and nothing will come up.  i have tried to do the system restore and it says that i cant do it on my computer.

What virus and spyware scanners have you used?

Make certain the taskbar isn't hidden by moving your mouse down the screen and trying to pull it up.I have made sure that the toolbar isnt hidden.  I have the FOLLOWING virus and spyware:

-Adaware SE Personal
-Tweak Now Regular Cleaner
-Spybot Search and Destroy

I also have Norton 2004 but that never works on my computer.  Everytime taht I go to use that it tells me that I need to uninstall the program and then reinstall it on my computer.  However, my computer never allows me to uninstall it.  can you see if this helps....right -click with your mouse on the bottom of the screen....and drag the taskbar upwards.....Is that particular computer able to get ONTO the internet? If so then go to Trend MICRO's Housecall on-line anti-virus scanner and scan your computer. Put a check-mark in the auto-clean box.

Then download AVG Free Home Edition anti-virus to your hard-drive.

Now boot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key whilst the computer is starting up, choosing Safe Mode, and try uninstalling Norton 2004 in safe mode.

If it won't uninstall DELETE the Norton folder.

Physically disconnect from the internet (pull the connection out from the 'phone line) re-boot to the desktop and install AVG. You will be asked to re-boot.

Re-connect to the interrnet as your machine is re-booting and immediately look for updates for the AVG program.

Run a full anti-virus scan of your computer using AVG.http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318027

Everything? Then why do you ask?

You have to be more specific.I've checked for virsuses and spyware, but nothing. It seems like each program I have that needs to connect to a client, is unable to connect. The error code I get for Google Earth is "c000000c"  Not sure what that means. I've checked my firewall and that also is disabled. I'm not sure what to do. Quote

Solve : Making A Partition?

Answer»

I have one hard drive on my COMPUTER with quite a bit of free space on it, but only one partition. I want to use some of that  free space to make a new partiotion to install 32 bit win xp on (I am currently using win xp x64). I bought a COPY of Paragon Partition manager, but it can't seem to create a new partition on my free space while programs (the operating system) are running on that drive. Does anyone know how to resize the partition on this drive so I can have room to make a new one?i havn't used Pargaon Partition but in partition magic you can create a dos boot disk and use it to boot from them change the Partitionas. do a search through the Pargaon Partition help and see if there is any way of making a boot disk
I have used PM 7 and there is no mention of X64 in the manuals.  I suggest you post on one of the many PM forums, you will probably get a more meaningful response there.

There's one here http://www.developerfusion.co.uk/forums/

and another here http://www.techsupportforum.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7120

and a heck of a lot here
http://www.redzip.com/index.php?tpid=10248&ttid=100&st=partition+magic+forum

Good luckI use the Partition Resizer in BootIT NG's boot manager. You don't need to install the boot manager just cancel all screens and go directly to Partition work.

This will run from a floppy diskette.

Just shrink the partition down to a reasonable size say 10240 MB (10 GB) and then re-boot.

Go to Disk Management and make an Extended partition using the full remaining drive-space and then create, up to, three Logical drives within the Extended partition and format them one at a time.

You can then move the My Documents and Email folders to a partition to give you sufficient free-space on the PRIMARY partition (C).

You can also move the paging file to a partition and just leave a SMALL paging file on the C: drive.

You should disconnect from the internet, remove your anti-virus program, and run chkdsk and defrag before booting to the diskette.

Not removing the anti-virus program can cause errors and failure.

TERABYTEIMPORTANT

Back up any important data first of all!

I've never use Paragon Partition manager, and Partition Magic. But I always use Partition Expert, it has intuitive windows wizard that you could easily do whatever you want with your partitions. And you'll save all your important info, as this software allows create, copy, move, delete partition of any type, without losing data.
In this case, you could just shrink your partition, and create new one (Primary partition). As well, Partition Expert includes OS selector, during start up PC you could choose, which OS you want to use now.
Actually, I've never seen such easy and convenient hard drive software.
I really recommend you to try it.

Solve : downloading issues and other annoyances?

Answer»

I didnt find anything regarding this issue and i'm going to try and explain it the best i can.  I believe these all might tie in together so i'll explain each problem. I'm USING an XP Home Edition HP system. First off when ever i try to download files they will pause at a certain percentage and i have to restart them at least 5 - 10 times to get the file to finish. Using a comcast cable modem by the way so its not a speed problem. Second certain webpages i have to refresh to get the whole page to LOAD at certain times. Third is when i visit this one page called www.petesbits.com and i try to listen to a clip it cuts off about half way through and just stops. This might also be a windows 10 media player error as well. I was thinking that maybe all these tie in together and have not been able to find a solution online anywhere and it this seemed like a great place to GO. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Solve : OS Restarting and Restarting?

Answer»

When I start my computer up, everything goes fine until suddenly my computer restarts, then it goes fine but restarts... This has happened before and it did go away but it's doing it again.
My physical memory is also random, its normally way over 256 MB but now its down to like 40 MBs.

OS: Microsoft Windows XP SP1(don't know how to get SP2)

Recent Programs/Drivers installed:
Sony Acid(uninstalled)
Syntrillium(uninstalled)
Orion VST(uninstalled)
Right-click My Computer and open the PROPERTIES. Under the General tab what is the Processor speed and how much RAM does it SAY is fitted?

When the computer is re-booting tap the F8 key to go into safe mode. In the control panel go to System, Advanced, Start up & Recovery Settings... and Uncheck 'Automatically restart'.

Next time the computer fails you should get an error message showing on the screen.

Take careful note of it and post it here.

Run a memory disgnostic such as MemTest86 overnight and see if there are any errors being reported.

If there are then try re-seating your RAM module(s).

Make sure that you take proper anti-static MEASURES before touching any internals.

G Down:

Did this problem happen all of the sudden, or has your PC become gradually slower over time?

If it happened suddenly, what changed just prior to the slow down?  Did you add a new hardware device or install a new program or change one of the Windows settings?

Also, is it always slow, or just slow some of the time?  If some of the time, what programs are running when it is slow?

its a pc its not old only like a year or so i have norton antivirus. its been getting slower gradaly. umm i dont know what spyware is.. or ram... or procesor.. it freezes mainly while online, like if someones online too long or if someones doing too many thing at once it starts to freeze up. i got a message that my antivirus expired but it wont let me renew. i have dial up connection. does that help?Quick online scan...

Solve : Brand New System, Major Error?

Answer»

For about a month, month and a half my system worked fine. Then out of nowhere it started acting like it had picked up a virus. Programs crashed, I had popups, etc

I was unable to open Task Manager
I formatted my hard drive. After formatting and installing XP Home again, -AS SOON AS- Windows started up, it SAID that it had recovered from a serious error and that it had 159 CRITICAL system errors and told me to get a registry fixer.

I obtained Registry Mechanic and ran it. It told me that I had a corrupted registry and that it would fix it,.

It did little good. Programs still either crashed or refused to install at all citing numerous errors each time.

I tried running multiple spyware/virus scanning and removing utilities but each time they eaither detect nothing or detect a minor problem and tell me that they fix it but I am still having the same exact problems of programs crashing or not installing at all.

Registry mechaning still constantly detects corrupted registry files.

I have formatted multiple times and each time Windows installs, it tells me that there is a currupted registry and I still have the software crash/refusal to install problems

I run registry mechanic every so often and it always tells me I have errors and that it fixes the errors but still no improvement in my system.

Just today I opened the system up, removed the ram and CR2032 battery on the mobo and replaced them.

Since doing this, I tried to format again but my Windows CD is not autodetected when the system reboots even though I have the boot order set to boot from CD first

I am at my wits end. This is a brand new COMPUTER not even three months old. I am ready to try anything. Please, please, PLEASE, any advice would be greatly aappreciatedWell when you reformat the computer you shouldn't ahve registry errors because you have erased everything and clean them all... Are you sure you reformated and not reinstall windows. Well In case you did try http://www.killdisk.com to reformat your computer again as soon as you are done http://www.bootdisk.com to get a startupdisk. I only know windows98se startup commands so lets go with that. Once you get into DOS you can type C:/ [enter] then from C:/> use these commands fdisk.exe if you get an error then thats fine just change it back to A:/ then use FORMAT C: /s that should convert your hard drive to FAT32 You can cahnge it to NTFS on windows setup. As soon as your done run scandisk.exe that should check for errors. That should be how its done and there shouldn't be any registry errors

It would be more helpful if you can name some registry errors you have
You said,

You might like to try ASO Win Registery Optimizer from
http://www.winaso.com/ I found this to far better than Registery Mechanic, it must worth a try.

Quick update here. Eventually my system did recognize the XP INstall CD and I formatted yet again though I am still having the exact same problem.

I realize that I shouldnt have a corrupt registry after a format. Yes, I am sure that I formatted. Im pretty familiar with the proces and have done it in the past.

I will try this, thank you.

I formatted and installed some system files (motherboard drivers and what not) and then installed WinASO. It discovered 108 errors.
4
22 Deep Registry Scan
12 Invalid Files Path
1 Registry Integrity
67 SHARED DLLs
2 Software Locations
I am unable to copy/paste errors for you all and even if I could, 108 would be a daunting task.

Ill try repairing what I can then trying killdisk to format yet again.
Quote
It discovered 108 errors

Are you sure these things are errors?
Invalid file paths are quite normal, create & save a file, then delete that file & you will get an invalid file path, these are just 'cleanup' things.
Many programs share dll files.
Software locations are probably much the same as invalid file paths.
I'm not sure about the 22 Deep Registry Scan or registry integrity entries.
After a fresh install just run a registry cleaner and be happy.  Have you deleted old partitions, re-made them and then FULL formatted before re-installing?

When you are doing this work is your computer PHYSICALLY DISCONNECTED from the internet? (Essential!)

Do you install your anti-virus program before re-connecting to the internet? (Essential!)

Do you update and scan with your Anti-Virus program BEFORE updating anything else? (Essential!)

Do you use Anti-Trojan software such as SpyBot SD, AdAware SE and SpywareBlaster?

Did you pay for Registry Mechanic?

Try Tune-Up Utilities and see if that makes a reassuring difference.

Registry 'errors' are, as has been said, not always errors but just registry entries which are no longer required.

BEWARE third party registry cleaners, as they are NOT as accurate as they should be.

Microsoft should produce its OWN registry cleaner.

Uriel, I had a problem like this and it was a ram issue.   You said you took out bios battery & ram & replaced them, did you take them out & reinstall them or replace with new (or otherwise known to be working components)?

I guess the key issue would be if you noticed errors while installing windows, I did have errors while installing & then also running windows, the ram didn't match the board, got better ram.   I'm thinking this might be the issue because you said '-AS SOON AS-' windows started.

The other thing (like Mac said) would be to unplug your internet cable as you're installing.   Sometimes once they've got your IP, you'll get hacked even before you get to the desktop.   The network IS running before you get to desktop. Quote

I just reinstalled them. I did not place in a new bettery or sticks of ram.

The ram and motherboard do match. Like I said they did at one point work perfectly. Also, Newegg had the two paired up together on their website.

Quote

I am unable to connect to the internet at all until I install drivers for the motherboard. I will however try unplugging the ethernet cable while formatting.

Leave it unplugged whilst installing and disconnect all of your peripherals. You can install these later as you would normally do with a new computer.

Make sure that the XP Home CD you are using has SP2 and is clean. I have to gently wash and dry them sometimes to get an error free install.

Run the drive manufacturer's diagnostic on the drive and also run an overnight test on the RAM with MemTest86.

I would STOP using Registry Mechanic as it appears to be messing up your registry. I don't use it and I don't get the problems you have.Id like to thank everybody for the helpful advice. Some things Ive yet to try but will get to them.

Sadly, Im about to start another semester of online college classes so Im unable to continually be mesing around with and formatting my system all the time. Right now Im able to connect to my online classes and those come first. Hopefully Ill be able to get this system working properly when theres a lull in my schedule.

Thanks again for the suggestions and advice. Ill probably be back in a couple of months.Good luck!

Seems to work now thanks.

Good idea flame im off to bed l

RossI have this same problem, but was so embarrassed I had to wait for someone else to post before I spoke up.

So how do you do it in XP ?TY Annoyances.org

Windows XP - SOLUTION 1
Right-click on the drive icon for your CD drive, CD recorder, or DVD drive, and select Properties.
Choose the AutoPlay tab, and choose the desired action for each type of CD. For example, choose Music CD, then click Select an action to perform, then select Take no action.

Windows XP - Solution 2
Obtain and install TweakUI (part of the PowerToys for Windows XP package), and then start TweakUI.
Expand the My Computer branch, then the AutoPlay branch, and then select Drives.
Turn off the checkbox NEXT to each drive letter for which you want AutoPlay disabled.
Windows 2000/XP
Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom.
Double-click the Autorun value, and type 0 for its value. (If it's not there, create it by selecting EDIT -> New -> DWORD Value, and typing "Autorun" for its name.)
You MAY have to log out and then log back in for this change to take effect.

Note: With this solution, Windows will no longer be notified when you insert a new CD. To make sure the correct icon and title for the CURRENT CD are displayed in My Computer and Explorer, press F5 to refresh the window. ;DHopester you wussy

Okay. my little brother's PC laptop has issues.

Dell Latitude P3 processor Windows 2000professional.

I have a laptop identical to it and mine does not have the problem. Sometimes his computer does not let you choose a drive to save to or OPEN from because it gives you no drives in the pull-down list.

Problem mostly noticed when floppy drive is in, but not usually when CD drive is there.

Neither machine is connected to the internet so we're pretty sure that it isn't viruses. You can not see the drives in My Computer? They show up there, just not when you're in an application and you go to save your work, the stupid little pull-down menu thing that SAYS c: doesn't say anything. it doesn't happen all the time, but RANDOMLY and unpredictably. usually they come back if you try 2 or three times or whatever. I fixed it once, but don't remember what I did. :-/ If you fixed it once, can you remember what caused it to happen?nope. never knew the cause. but i did something (don't know what) and it fixed it. but you gotta fix it every time it does it cause it does it again eventually even if you fix it.  :-/Have you looked for the latest Windows 2000 updates? PERHAPS a fix is included. But how come his computer does it, when my machine is fine? our laptops are identical. User ABUSE?Is there something we can do to fix this (without having to download an update via modem connection and running up the phone bill)?f8 on boot.........chose last good config........try another fdrive caddy.......pins maybe worn out..We thought of that, and put my drive in his machine, but his machine did the same thing. and my machine did NOT have ANY problems with his drive.
